THREE RELATIONSHIPS Point Line Plane Frame and Infill Mass

Each architectural techtonic explored in the Earth Design Studio was considered and defined over a two week schedule. At the end of the given time, the verabal defintion of each relationship was transformed into physical form, an incarnation of an individuals interpretation

1.1 POINT LINE PLANE

9

10

“The Light Pavillion” Chengdu, China A collaboration between renowed architect and artist, Lebbeus Woods and Cristoph Kumpusch led to the creation of the “The Light Pavillion” by Stephen Holl Architects. A space where individuality was focus, a space “that gives us the opportunity to experience a type of space we haven’t experienced before” - Lebbeus Woods (Woods, Kumpusch, 2011)

11

12

Design Concept Applying the precedent of “The Light Pavillion I was able to configure my interpretation of point, line and plane into a formal representation of the architectural technique. Woods and Kumpusch use of the techtonic is greatly displayed in all facets of the building. The juztaposition between the straight lines of the pavillions exterior and the deliberate disorder of the pavillion in the centre of the building, proves the techtonic to be unemphatic. Rather it is left to individual decription. I wished to convey this multifaceted effect of a seemlingly realised techtonic through my own physical representation. The regular geometry of the exterior square -like shape with discerned disorder of geometry on the interior.

1.2 MASS

15

16

“Mahoning” Franz Kline, 1956

The addition of one linear forms creates the subraction of another. The thick, potent darkness of the lines create a dualistic approach of mass and dynamism. The purposiveness of the the white should too not be forgotten, “I paint the white as well as the black, and the white is just as important” - Franz Kline (Skopek, 2013)

17

18

Design Concept Like the oil on canvas “Mahoning”, the mass product I wished to create was one that was focused on the negative space in addition to the more obvious dark solid forms. The decidedness of the white, its own entity, inspired me to use the whites of the backgroundto convey mass. The darkness of Kline’s linear work hint at heaviness and weight, which I desired to convey in my representation of the techtonic. Its harshness, a conveyency of a deliberate mistake creates rythym and purpose to the piece, which I wish to attain through the seemingly random shading in my drawing.

1.3 FRAME AND INFILL

21

22

“Parasite Office Za Bor Architects, Moscow As the name suggests, this architectural pursuit takes advantage of the space between two apartments. The two apartment blocks on either side of the office creating a frame, whilst the discorse of office structure provides the infill.

23

24

Design Concept Assimilating my design approach to the precedent, the “parasite office, I wished to create the techtonic of frame and infill by utilising not only literal forms but also the negtive space. As the office is not only framed by the apartments it is also framed by the negative space above and below. This negative space I wished to convey through the spaces in the exterior frame, which is hence not space but rather a continuation of the frame. Towards the centre the cube in the centre is framed by the folded forms, which are also created to infill themselves. The cube frames its negative interior. The deisgn approach I took wishes to convery the multiplicity of frame and infill- that frame can be infill and the infill can be frame.

Born as a square, takes flight and is then framed.

2 CONCEPTACLE

29

30

POINT/LINE/PLANE MASS FRAME AND INFILL

31

32

The design of my conceptacle was a collaboration of all the architectural techtonics that were explored previously. Assimilating point, line, plane, mass and frame and infill into a combined coherent structure was what I wished to do. I adopted varying materiality to express the different forms. In addition I desired to create an amalgamation of ideas and physical structure. The previous physical representations that I had created spoke of confinement and a set space. In this conceptacle I wished to convey freedom, whilst still incorporating geometric forms coinciding with one another.

3.1 SITE ANALYSIS

WATER NORTH CONTOURS PATHWAYS EDIFICES PAVILLION SITE

Upon entrance of Herring Island, the sound of the busy streets surrounding is still quite loud, and the other passengers from the ferry provide that the Island is not secluded from humans, yet secluded from typical human interractions with technology; the island itself can only be reached by ferry not directly by car, and it is immedietly understood the only way to travel around the island is by foot. The island is an embodiement of a secret, the overgrown nature and disorientating progression of pathways creates a landscape adamant of discovery.

Simplistic approach to first design concept.

3.2 CONCEPT AND SKETCH DESIGN

The phenomena of time , particularly how it progress is, is a secret unknown to humanity. whilst we can measure time and understand time through daily progression , we can still be lost within its vast oppurtunity. The “secret of time” pavillion is a progression and exploration of such disorientation. Inspired by Piet Mondrian’s Tableau 2, a painting which is the embodiment of the artists conviction towards a deeo involvement of linear structures. Mondrian’s propensity towards such art developed his great regard for purity through line. However whilst this purity exists, disorder is present, which is my concept for the “Secret of Time Pavillion” The painting is similar to that of a maze, however in my pavillion I wish to encapsulate a varied form, rather liner forms which do not necessarily meet. This bridging between forms is to encapsulte secrets between different entities or concepts, or between humanity and our grasp of time. The path is set, yet different pathways can be taken. You can see through the path, yet you are confined against time. Freedom and captivity.

4 REFLECTION

The exploration of various architectural techtonics at the beginning of the subject allowed for a better understanding of point/line/plane, mass and frame and infill. This greater understanding allowed me to grasp a sense of individual defintion of each architectural relationship which would assist me throughout the entirety of the subject. Due to a better understanding of the techtonics, I was able to progress and configure the conceptical. The conceptical being a configuration of all the architectural language we had learnt in subject, gave me insight into how to create something conscious of specific design notions. The conceptical was to be careful arrangement, without neglect nor exuberance of one particular techtonic. Hence, the conceptical allowed me to learn carefully measured design. The final project, “Something Like a Pavilllion, combined research and compilation exercise. This project pushed me to ahieve not only a configuration of the previous knowledge of techtonics, but concerns of site and suitability.
