Dream big, work hard this is your moment.“For a countless reasons you may feel motion sickness during the ride may be due to alluring aromas and sounds of home could be because of unfamiliar faces in crowd and dizzying flow of college life. The workload may deter you,complexity of the subject may scare you and the otherworldliness may dissuade you but you can always avoid these stabs by proper planning and foresight. Keep your eyes open and never loose your positive temperament. Remember life is what you make and UIET is now also yours too so make us proud.“Jump into the risks , do something out of the box, step out of your comfort zone after all you won't be here for a lifetime.

Directing the Freshers Orientation was organised in the Law Auditorium of Panjab University, North Campus on 12th August to offer a formal welcome to the freahers for the academic year 20162017. The event was organised by Brand Promotion Committee, UIET and covered by the photographers from BPC and team Magboard. The event started with the auspicious lamp lightening ceremony, followed by the PU Anthem. Our director, Prof. Renu Vig ma’am invited the guest of honour, Shri Hardev Singh, honoraray professor, nottingham university business school, uk. Also, dignitaries like Prof. Deepti Gupta, Dean International (Girls) and Prof. O.P. Katare, Director, Research Promotion Cell, P.U. boosted the moral of kids with their presence. Major emphasis was laid on development of mind through curious exploration of science rather than simply reading and learning from the books. Also, budding engineers were motivated to ask questions in class. Enterpreneurship was also laid focus on.

All the department heads explained the working of their departments, the vast resources available and the scopes in their particular feilds. Our UIET librarian, Dr. Richa Gupta ma’am informed students, about the formalities to avail the benefits of the department as well as the A.C. Joshi library in an interactive session. All major college clubs and socities were introduced to the students via informative videos.

Following an entertaining band performance by the maestros of UIET, was an interactive session by Miss Amita Gulati, carrier counsellor and Software data Analyst at Infosys about carrer options for engineers. After a short break and lunch, students returned to witness a colourful display of dance and music performed beautifully by the seniors in the form of melodious songs, energizing guitar and Casio presentations and the evergreen Bhangra. The energetic moves compelled the audience to leave their seats and join our dancers. Even the freahers got a chance to come over the stage and display their talents to new friends and fellows.

The programme was appreciated by all and gave everyone a lot of memories to cherish for the time to come..

Achievements As has been the history, UIETians have shown their expertise in all fields, be it sports or entrepreneurship or business or academics, they have outshone all others. Following the legacy We have colossal list of Achievers, once again.

Well, here’s an insight to the different summer internships offered to UIETIANS:

1. Jaskirat Singh (IT final year)  GRE score 320 2. Srikar (IT final year)  GRE score 307  Cleared TOEFL  Placed in ZS Associates 3. Vikas Kumar Dwivedi (IT final year)  Gets scholarship of 5000 rupees in every semester for securing first place in each semester.  Got special certificates at convocation ceremony and topper’s felicitation program.  1st rank in Silver Zone Computer Science Olympiad in 2012.

4. Preetwinder (IT, third year) & Aditya Dev Sharma (CSE, third year)  Cleared GSOC  Received a certificate, a t-shirt and a scholarship worth $5500 from Google as they successfully created codes for some open source organizations.

5. Dr. Vishal Gupta wrote a research paper on ‘Hybrid Text Summarization System for Punjabi Text’ which was published in Springer.

PUSU declares ‘new era’ for PU PUSU won elections with a landslide

Freshmen’s year consists of an obscure mixture of excitement and nervousness which is further increased in ELECTION TIME. Elections are held every year in PU on a grand scale. Every party put their best foot forward, members are fully devoted to their party’s agenda and follow its unique ideology. They all want to win and claim to do what is best for students for which they leave no stone unturned.

This time the elections saw a change in power as Students Union declared victory over all other parties with 2843 votes all over the campus. They won election with clean swipe securing all the four positions for President, Vice President, Gen Secretary and Joint Secretary. “ Being in a democratic country, PU elections also follow the same democratic pattern. for every seat voting is done either for the candidates who belong to a particular party or Stand as an independent candidate. Apart from this, every department has department representatives. These DRs are students of the same department who voluntarily Step forward for the post . Again its on their will whether they want to run in this race with support of a party horse or not. This time Baneetpal, Ayush Gupta, Asminpreet, Avinash pandey won the seats of DR in UIET. According to the archetype a manifesto is prepared which concerns of day to day problems of students, party heads come forward to keep their opinions in front of students who then contemplate them for voting . But history has witnessed since the beginning, politicians never adhere to the path of honesty. UIET also has people who think that everything can be bought which has been proven correct up to now.

Politicians even in PU throw all kind of tantrums so that people blindly follow them.

Being new to the college life, looking for some merriment after being through such a critical time of boards and tedious procedure of admissions:

Freshers are the main target of such parties. As they can be easily manipulated.

Politicians set such ostentatious bait that resisting it becomes difficult for a craving mind. This includes throwing parties in city’s top most clubs, some adventurous trips outside the tricity, free dinners, DJ nights and much more. These things are enough to perplex the mind of responsible youth and make them turn a blind eye towards Some important things.

Such things may seem boring but they do improve the standards of university and ease the living like fee hike ,First aid facilities in departments and Hostels, timings of fee submission etc. We hope to see a change this time with students union in power.

PLACEMENTS - From the students’ view!

It is just the starting of the placement season and there is a very good kickstart from the students of UIET. 46 students have been placed so far in leading companies of the industry offering an average package of 6 lakh per annum.

We took interview of different students across the campus and here’s what they have to say:

What was the most difficult part in your placement drive?

Well, the most difficult part that hinders my selection was my CGPA which was very low as compared to others but I tried to be honest and natural because it is a HR thing and you cannot be false with your answers.

How it feels to get placed in the initial season of the session?

Being completely honest, it feels really good. I felt I was on cloud nine. ZS Associates have a pretty rigorous interview process so it definitely feels good to be selected in top 6 among 400+ students. Now I feel that I don’t have to slog day and night anymore to get placed.

What did you do during your summer internships and what skills did you focus on?

I did summer training in Java after 2nd year and Android Application Development after 3rd year.

Choose at least one programming language and prepare its concepts well to clear the technical rounds. Also since projects play an important role in your resume, focus on the concepts involved and it’s working. Also, many questions are asked from the training itself like what problems you face , how you worked as a team etc. So, one should surely go for training and take them seriously.

How confident were you before the placement session?

I was really low on confidence before the session because they had rejected pretty good students before me. Also the company had come suddenly, we weren’t given much time to prepare. But when I sat in the interview, I had to calm myself down because otherwise I couldn’t have answered tricky questions.

I worked in publicity/marketing and media team in the college fests that really helped me to deal with a large public which helped me to get a KPO like Zycus.

Do you have any tips/advice for fresher’s?

To get placed in Z Scalar, just focus on your technical skills as they ain’t checking your communication skills. Start working on LINUX and give more attention to your projects in the college life.

IMAGEN understands that calibre and finesse in photography doesn't lie in the equipment being used but in the eye and perspective of the person behind it. And so, no, you don't need a DSLR to be a photographer. Or for that matter- a member of this society!

IMAGEN plans to organise events such as photo walks, discussion sessions and expert talks. It will also be conducting competitions with exciting prizes to be won by the winners. Bell the ‘CAT’ Are you worried about your future? Are you uncertain as to what to do next, which career to pursue after B.E.? To help you overcome your anxieties, we bring this column to tell you which all career options are available after B.E.

CATalysis Do you dream of becoming a successful businessman or the CEO of a company or even own a big company? Then you can surely pursue MBA and hone your business skills. But every year lakhs of people complete their MBA but all of them do not become rich and successful. The difference lies in the institute from where they pursue their masters. If you want to be among the elites, then work hard and get into one the most prestigious institutes of the country – the IIM’s and make your life. So we get all your queries answered and help you know what all you need to do in order to get there.

What is CAT? CAT (Common Admission Test) is the premier all India management entrance exam conducted by the IIM’s (Indian Institutes of Management). It is a computer based test that scores a candidate on the basis of Quantitative Ability (QA), Verbal Ability (VA), Reading Comprehension (RC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning. The IIT’s and the IISc also use CAT scores to select students for their management programmes.

When is it held and what is the eligibility criteria?

The test is annually (usually in November) at 354 centres in 99 cities across India. The registration begins around early August and lasts till September end. The candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree with at least 50% marks or an equivalentCGPA to be eligible to appear for the exam. Candidates appearing for

U, I & E T the final year of bachelor’s degree can also apply.

When and how to prepare for CAT? The ideal time to start preparing for CAT or for that matter any competitive exam is NOW. Pay attention in class. Go to the depth of the topic. Understand rather than ’Rattafy’. Follow these steps: 1. Analyze your strengths and weaknesses.

Do numbers scare you? Has probability always been a bitch? Are the RC passages long and boring and put you to sleep? Then start to work on them.

2. Start reading.

The best way to build your vocabulary is to read. Read anything – books, newspapers, magazines, blogs etc. This will also help you to increase your reading speed and give you a critical mindset.

3. Start working on your problem solving ability.

Start reading through brain-teasers. Solve logical problems. Put your brain cells to work. Get them the proper workout they require.

4. Practice.

As they say, “Practice makes a man perfect.” Practice as much as you can. Get previous year papers from the internet. Work on them. The study materials and online tests provided by coaching institutes can prove to be of great help.

5. Last minute preparation tips.

Do not study too many concepts during the last days. Just practice some tests daily.

Confidence is the key thing. If you are not confident about a certain topic, start from the easiest questions on that topic just to regain confidence. Then try and move to difficult questions.

So once you have cleared the exam and got admission into a good B-school, work hard and excel so that you get a good job and make your career the way you’d dreamt of. That is, work hard and party harder!!

Workshop A Seven day Faculty Development Workshop was organised in UIET, PU, Sec25 from 22 to 28 August in collaboration with OMRON AUTOMATION, Gurugram and other premire institutes. Massive participation from Faculty of various colleges, Research Scholars and Industrial personals was observed.

A week long workshop was organised at UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY(UIET), PANJAB UNIVERSITY from 22nd to 28th August on 'Programmable Logic Controler (PLC) and Automation.' Main aim of the workshop was to brodge the gap between industry and academics, enhance domain knowlwdge, make participants aware of advanced technologies in PLC's and exploring automation trends in the industry.

Chief Guest for the opening ceremony, Mr. H. O. Verma, Managing Director, Ramani Precision Machines (P) LTD. laid emphasis on encouraging research work and development of technology in India. In accordance with the Make in India programme, emphasis should be laid on quality production within the nation.

The workshop was a rich and fruitful experience to all the participants and the efforts laid down by the faculty and students of UIET were appreciated by all.

Who is bigger : You or Nation The initial thought to the topic was not completely mine. ‘Ignited Minds’, an amazing 200 page text by Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam that unleashed the power within India touched me immensely and I couldn’t restrict myself from writing this.

When do you succeed in a project? Certainly the day you realize that your project is bigger than you, that it’s not you who needs to win or get recognized but your project.

When Sir Alva Edison gave birth to his invention, what do you think must be his purpose, a Nobel Prize? Illiterates are no less in this world and I am sure they must not know a man called Alva Edison ever existed but they because of him have the power to see the world when nature itself doesn’t allow them to. We travel throughout the world on airplanes but how many times do we really thank Wright brothers. The theory of relativity was only recognized after Einstein’s death but still gave base to many more inventions.

India at some moment in history used to contribute 33% of the world economy and then came the Mughals and no later the Britishers and India’s GDP fell down 3%. It’s 70 years from our independence and we are still at 7%. Ever wondered why? Because to every common and uncommon man only he and he is important and not the nation. Unlike common people, I won’t blame the ‘worthy’ politicians because they are too amongst us and no special to me to be mentioned.

We live in a democratic country and Abraham Lincoln well described democracy as “government to the people, by the people, for the people.”

Don’t lose your emphasis on ‘of’, ‘by’ and ‘for’. If the whole population of the country raise their voice against the wrong, no leader, no politician would be able to do anything but we barely bother, we hardly care.

Greater and successful enterprises make an amount that can’t be counted manually but the ones providing them with raw materials are struggling to the basic amenities of life. Mahabharta quotes that a country where farmer suffers can never prosper.

When market collapses, each one runs to check their balance, to cry on their loss. Even the people at the helm of the affairs have no botheration that the economy of the country has been affected. In power or out of power, they get their profits, then why should they really worry. “India will see” but why not realize that India is to its citizens or else India is just a piece of land.

We need to realize that missions are always greater than the organizations just as the organizations are always bigger than the individuals who run them.

Reliance is Reliance even without Dhirubhai Ambani. Satish Dhawan was a great man but his not being there did not shut ISRO, it’s still the Indian Space Research Organization.

Creative Article I see him studying day in and day out, I see him change from stick to stout.

He took in caffeine as frequently as water, He broke up with his neighbor's daughter.

The boy isolated himself into the four walls, Abandoned himself from all the calls.

Into the books all the while, It took away all his smile!

With piles of books and a crushed bed sheet,images He studied in cold and in heat.

Sunk in his chair from dusk to dawn, Kept studying till he yawn!

He kept quiet and suppressed, since he was born.

I tried stopping him.

When he studied, his papers i blew, Consequently, he turned me slow to two.

Struggle is all I see him do, My blades are revolving, ever since as a nerd he grew.

With so much stress and pressure from peer, Books became his only friends–only one near.

His parents wanting him to come first, Making his scene from worse to worst.

Watching him all day sleep with a cry, While I spin at five, to wipe his tears dry!

And then one day he just hangs on to me.

The bird is killed and can never again fly free!
