From soil to oil Back in 1987, a group of seven young farmers who had been growing linseed for several years became interested in its health benefits. So, right in the heart of Canterbury, in Ashburton, was where Bio Oils was born.

One of the founding members was Gavin Prebble and today his son Daryl, along with his wife Debbie and children Nick and Jenna, now own and operate the business and its retail brands. This year the team at Bio Oils celebrate their success and achievements. They’re marking 30 years of business experience in the flax seed market, and being the country’s largest producer of cold-pressed, New Zealand grown flax seed oil and flax seed meal. The Canterbury Plains enjoys ideal growing conditions with temperate climate and the rich soils make the region’s flax seed oil one of the richest sources of Omega 3 in the world. With a typical Omega 3 content of 60 percent and upwards, this essential fatty acid has a huge list of health benefits for skin, mobility and cardiovascular health, to name just a few. Bio Oils’ passion and expertise lies right here at home in Canterbury. Striving to support local businesses wherever possible, Bio Oils works extremely closely with local Canterbury farmers who are key to the business' success and for the future. Daryl contracts the seed to farmers in the region and works with them throughout the process, from planting through to harvest, to ensure a top quality crop and the best yields possible for the farmer. “We take good pride in our local region - we love to support our local economy and its good people, and like to be upholding the New Zealand reputation worldwide as leaders in the highest quality, clean, green produce,” Daryl says. This small brown seed is harvested, cleaned and dressed during the late summer months, before the oil is extracted locally at Bio Oils’ cold-pressing production facility in Ashburton.
Flax seed products from Bio Oils are then sold worldwide into the bulk pharmaceutical or food industries, into the gourmet food sector under its retail brand Totally Kiwi, or animal health supplements brand ProVida by Fourflax.
The two retail brands are growing from strength to strength and can be found in outlets across New Zealand, as well as overseas in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan and Australia.
Traceability references on the Totally Kiwi infused oils means that consumers can visit the website and see exactly where their product started, and what farm the seed originated from.
The company is also proud to bring its products back to grassroots, and supply through local New World and Fresh Choice supermarkets, pet stores, vet clinics, Farmlands stores and saddleries. CT
Supporting their registered tagline ‘From Soil to Oil’, the team at Bio Oils said this is meeting the expectations of customers worldwide who have a growing concern of where their food originates from. “It’s also great to pinpoint Ashburton and the Canterbury region on the map on a worldwide scale,” Jenna says.
