Bringing the hum back to Glenfield It’s a hospitality oasis in an otherwise sparsely catered for suburban area of Glenfield; this new gastro pub, The Postman’s Leg, is bringing a much needed vibrancy back to the neighbourhood. It’s a welcome newcomer to the area – situated on the spot where there was once the old Glenfield Tavern. A wealth of experience The pub is not quite a year old, but it has already started to scratch the collective itch With his own background as a chef and of locals with its modern décor, convenient hospitality owner throughout New Zealand, location and great indoor and outdoor facilities. Inside the vibe is just as welcoming, serving as a ‘home away from home’, with an upmarket yet casual touch to the interior décor. This is an ideal place to sit back, relax and enjoy a drink and a plateful of scrumptious goodness. It helps that not only the customers get to enjoy this new community hub, but the staff too. They are equally appreciative, taking pride in coming to work each day and offering service the “Kiwi way”.

In the kitchen The man in the kitchen, Paul Duncan, originally hails from Hokitika. “He’s a fantastic chef who revels in sharing his food with the Glenfield community,” Scott says. The kitchen remains open plan, so customers can see where the magic happens. The food remains true to the classic Kiwi gastro style, but offers a few twists and flavours with a difference. Some of the favourites include melt-in-yourmouth pork belly, a scrumptious duck dish, everyone’s all time favourite fish and chips, and of course the chef’s own signature dish - a delicately braised lamb shoulder. To top it off, The Postman’s Leg offers a range of beverages, including premium beers, ciders, craft beer and a range of top wines.

Functions Looking for somewhere to host your next function? The Postman’s Leg can host up to 400 people inside and up to 200 outside, but if you’re after something a little more private, they have a private function room too. Aptly named The Leg Room, this spot is perfect for anything from business presentations to Christmas functions. It comes complete with an in-built sound system, LCD screen, modern bar, free onsite car parking and it’s conveniently joined to a private outdoor courtyard to create a more dynamic entertainment area.

Game on The Postman’s Leg also has a place to play darts, a pool table, outdoor cider shed, petanque pit outside, and more 50” TV screens than you can shake a wooden leg at. There’s also a gaming and TAB area to match.

The story behind the name Long before the dog and bone, news spread as far as the postman could roam. Legend tells of a Glenfield hero, a postie who left his mark. An amputee by virtue of a saw milling accident, he refused to let this put him on the back foot. Fashioning a DIY harness for his horse, he simply changed careers. For 16 years, come rain, hail or canine, he provided a lifeline to the locals. So charge your glass as we salute a man with an iron will and a leg of wood. Scott says it’s this story and character in The Postman’s Leg DNA that allows everyone to be part of something more – a culture. “People love to be part of a story – a legend, and our story is part of the wider story of Glenfield,” he says.
