A total concrete pumping service Ian Howe Concrete Pumps Limited has the machinery and expertise to undertake one of the largest shotcrete concrete projects ever completed in Auckland. The company began work on the Waterview Tunnel mid-last year and the project is expected to take five years to complete.
Ian Howe Concrete Pumps director, Harriet Wells says the company has been doing shotcrete work on a daily basis on the southern approach to the tunnel since October 2012. “We’re very well known for doing the tricky jobs and Ian is a good problem solver,” she says. “We do the difficult jobs that others won’t touch.”
“We do boom work, bridges and columns,” Wells says. “Shotcrete is quite specialised and we mainly do that as part of our stabilising work. We have a specialist team of guys that do it and two specialist shotcrete pumps for that work.” Ian Howe Concrete Pumps operates a large fleet of machinery, including line pumps, boom pumps, high-rise pumps, shotcrete pumps and manual delta/satellite booms.

“Ian is very practical and he can look and see solutions where other people can’t,” Wells says “We’ve also got very experienced operators who know what they’re doing; we have a very good work unit.” The company’s machinery is extremely well maintained, with replacement units sent out quickly if there is ever any problem with pumps onsite.
Portfolio of projects In addition to the five year Waterview Tunnel project, Ian Howe Concrete Pumps has completed many significant shotcrete projects during the years, including the walls alongside Spaghetti Junction, the Northern Busway and the Northwestern Motorway, the Hobson Tunnel and Soho Square in Ponsonby.
The company employs 16 skilled and experienced staff.

The tunnel makes up half of the Waterview Connection, which will deliver 5kms of six lane motorway through and beneath Auckland’s western suburbs, linking State Highways 16 and 20 to complete the city’s western ring route by 2017.
