While black is typically the most common color used throughout the fall runway shows, it is burgundy that is set to dominate your wardrobe next winter. The romantic wine color made an appearance in a wide variety of fabrics including fur, leather, velvet, wool and silk.

Narciso Rodriguez and BCBG chose to pair burgundy garments with burnt orange, while other designers opted for a more classic black pairing.

Some well-known designers successfully incorporated this season’s trends in perfect alignment with styles characteristic to their brands. Diane Von Furstenberg presented a cohesive collection of floor length dresses, bright colored separates and sequined tops all tied together with an effortless touch of sophistication.

Custo Barcelona toned down his use of bright colored garments, regularly seen in his spring collections, with more season-appropriate colors including red, black and tan. Staying true to his vibrant aesthetic, his laid-back, yet high-fashion apparel commanded attention with wildly geometric prints, fur trimming and expert detailing.

Tommy Hilfiger is one of the most highly anticipated shows each fashion week and the All-American designer has yet to disappoint his audience. Taking place at Room Service on February 9th was the “Cinderella of New York forHuntress” perfume launch party. Laura Diana-Garratt, Debra Diana and Sofia Diana from 3D Beauty Consulting partnered with Fashion Designer Pamela Quinzi for a night of fashion and fragrance. The three sisters drew inspiration for “The Huntress Stiletto” from Diana, the Roman Goddess.

Fashion Week mania continued with Boutique Artists Fashion Week 2012 held on February 16th at Hudson Terrace. My Lifestyle Magazine and Dreams in Heels presented the event, which was excellently executed by producer Toni Russo. The cold weather in New York did not stop Maggie May Swimwear, Yummy Honey Swim and Norma Ishak from showcasing a colorful array of swimsuits.

Just as the New York Fashion Week mania started to die down, Couture Fashion Week picked up. Kicking off February 17th at the Waldorf Astoria, the weekend event also featured both renowned and upcoming international designers with a unique point of view.

Sandra Baquero, Catalin Botezatu, Patuna Bushyhead, Romero Bryan, and Andres Aquino were among several international designers presented this year.

Silvia Tcherassi is considered one of the most creative, innovative and versatile personalities in the world of fashion. With 20 years in the industry, Tcherassi has showcased her brand on an international stage having shown her prêt-à-porter collections at the fashion weeks in both Milan and Paris as a special guest of the organizers.

er style has been defined by the Dizionario della Moda as eclectic, her clothes, as having the delicateness of a ballet dancer, while at the same time, the strength of a rock star. Her prêtà-porter gave rise to the concept of demi-couture while her wedding gowns have become the perfect vehicle for her creative talent; recognized by the invitation to have one of her pieces at the “Unbridaled: The Marriage of Tradition and Avant Garde” exhibition in Paris.

Her approach to fashion has made her deserving of important international recognition, including her receipt of the prestigious designation of “Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres” by the French Government; an honor bestowed on leaders of the international arts community for their “contribution and commitment to cultural service.”

Searching to expand her vision beyond fashion, in October of 2009 Tcherassi opened her first namesake luxury hotel in Cartagena, Colombia to much critical acclaim as part of the new Tcherassi Hotel Collection. The property was named one of the “Best New Hotels” by both Travel + Leisure and Conde Nast Traveler, as well as being noted 19

Born in Baranquilla, Colombia on the shores of the Caribbean, Tcherassi began her career as an interior designer, but the search for new artistic expression led her to the world of fashion. Her collections include prêt à porter, bridal, an accessories line and a home collection also, which can all be found at her namesake boutiques. Producing two unique collections per year, Silvia Tcherassi continues to push the boundaries of color and texture creating highly sought after luxurious, yet comfortable, elegant clothing and accessories for the modern woman.

Q: What inspires you to be a designer?

A: I have designed collections inspired by many sources: A Le Corbusier chair, the iconic Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, the city of Barcelona and concepts as full happiness. But they are simple “creative excuses”... For me, the real inspiration comes from the materials... they are my starting point, then I can discover some of kind connection between the pieces and the collection start to take shape.

Q: What motivates you to be a business woman?

A: T wo things: The development of a relevant brand and the opportunity to inspire people.

Q: How do you manage to keep a hotel and other businesses/projects?

A: I have my core brand (focus in ready to wear and accessories), three brand extensions (bridal, hotel and home collection) and a collaboration project (with Payless). This brand architecture has been designed to take advantage of the synergies generated for each project and maximize any effort. In addition, I profoundly believe in teamwork and partnerships with people with expertise in specific areas.

Q: What makes you a master in what you do?

A: D iscipline. You can have talent but keeping your focus is the key to success.

Q: Who have been your biggest mentors?

A: M y mother, Vera. She is a visionary, dreamer and pragmatic at the same time.

Q: What is the difference between fashion and style?

A: Fashion is related to body... style is related to mind.

Q: As a woman, what advice can you give to any Latina who wants to follow your career path?

A: N ever give up your femininity and your values in order to be successful.

Q: Do you consider yourself to be bilingual or multicultural?

A: M ulticultural. I was born in Colombia, my ancestors are European and I live in the United States. In addition, I spent a lot of time in Italy and France.

What defines your style?

A: An approach based on concepts such casual luxury and effortless elegance.

Q: When it comes to fashion, do you think Miami can be as important in fashion shows as New York, Milan and other major cities?

A: T he tradition of Milan and Paris and the business impor-

tance of New York are not at play. For this reason, I think Miami could be the capital of swimwear fashion. Each city has its edge and Miami can compete with Sao Paulo for this niche.

Facing a wall, place your hands on the wall with a height matching your face. Form a diamond between your index and thumb fingers. With your hands placed on the wall, bend your arms until your nose almost touches the wall. Press through your palms until your arms are almost straight.

Do this 15 times with a tempo of three seconds down and seven seconds up. Repeat for three separate sets. Triceps are used to push. Functionally speaking, it is a very important muscle, but aesthetically speaking it is also very nice looking.

We don’t always have access to a gym - and if you don’t, that doesn’t mean you can’t give your chest a great workout. When it comes to the chest, one of the best exercises is still the push up. But here is way to get more out of your push ups. Place your hands on the ground way outside the width of your shoulders.

With your belly button pulled in towards your spine engaging the muscles of your core and minimal arch in your lower back, let your chest come down until it almost touches the ground.

Squeeze your shoulder blades the entire movement and push up without your arms completely straightening or locking out.

Hold a towel in both hands with a length that’s outside your shoulders in front of you. Pull the towel tight in between both hands. Bending from your elbows, lower and raise your hands slowly for seven seconds.

Do this 15 times. After the first set of 15, adjust your hand length so that they are shoulder width apart; keep the same tempo and repetition count. Finally, grip the towel so that your hands are right next to one another. Again, follow the same tempo and repetition count as before. Repeat for three sets. This is a great exercise to give your arms that full, strong look. Perfect for this sleeveless season.

“You can’t change that because the audience wants to see you like that,” she continues. “So, for me it’s been a challenge.”

For years, she has been the charming face of such popular Spanish-language telenovelas as “Café con Aroma de Mujer,” “Un Gancho en el Corazón,” “Alguien te Mira” and “Pasión de Gavilanes,” just to name a few.

Garcia has always been a trailblazer.

She was one of the first Colombians ever to star in a Mexican telenovela. So it’s by no coincidence that Garcia finds herself in the big apple. Now that she’s captured the hearts of people throughout Latin America, Garcia is on a mission to do the same here in the United States to gradually do a cross over in English.

She’s now a resident of Miami, but crossing over to the U.S. market hasn’t always been easy. She recalls one of her first auditions in Los Angeles. Despite her many career accomplishments, it almost felt like she had to start over.

“I realized that no one knew me,” she admits. “I was just starting from scratch and it was so hard to get a role. It was so hard to go into an audition.”

It was a moment that forced Garcia to push herself beyond her limits.

“I was very depressed and then I realized how blessed I was to work in what I love,” says Garcia about overcoming her obstacles.

Since breaking into the U.S. market, Garcia starred as Barbie in the Spanish-language version of Disney’s “Toy Story 3,” an opportunity that helped this former kid star

to embrace her inner child.

“It’s the biggest thing that’s ever happened for me, having a chance to be a part of that,” says Garcia.

“When they said, ‘you’re going to be a part of Toy Story 3, I thought this can’t be true.’ This is a dream come true.”

Her career is moving faster than it ever has. She’s starring in the uplifting romantic comedy “El Cielo de tu Mirada,” and another film “Carrusel,” this year. Garcia is also filming this year alongside Actor William Levy, a male sex symbol in Latin America.

As Garcia nears the end of her New York photo shoot - her hair wrapped up, wearing a tight red coat, revealing more of her legs than she is used to - it seems she is on top of the city greatest city in the world. But for Garcia, beauty isn’t always in the clothes - it starts from inside.

“Whatever you think about the world is going to reflect on your face and in your attitude,” says Garcia. “Make up and good hair is just a compliment to that because you really need to be healthy and connected with yourself.”

rowing up Caucasian, I was always drawn to people who showed love outwardly. It was something that I immediately knew was instinctual to us humans and I would feel confused when others seemed closed off. However, as I grew up, I realized that being reserved and hidden is often part of our culture. Not showing an outpour of feelings toward our loved ones often seems like a mainstay in our society.

As a young adult, I started paying more attention to the Latino community and how they showed and expressed love toward their loved ones, to both family and significant others. Latinos can be extremely passionate, fun, vibrant and almost intoxicating. It made me want to build that same passion within myself.

As the divorce rate remains high in the U.S. and dating seems more like an interview process than a simple notion of meeting someone and enjoying their company, I have often proposed the question to myself, ‘Should we love more like Latinos?’

This past year, I’ve had more of a chance to view and experience Latino culture - and see firsthand the outward love they show toward each other. Witnessing this time after time almost makes me believe in love again. Love is visceral. It’s an emotion that drives us forward. Being in love is not a logical act in any way. The heart wants what the heart wants and expressing true passion for someone can be truly magical.

In a time when we are exposed to 72-day celebrity marriages and so called scripted dramas with the ‘Real Housewives of Whatever,’ I want to see more ‘real’ and ‘true’ stories. The Latino community showcases that every day. Watch Univision and Telemundo and you get an idea through passionate telenovelas.

As winter always turns to spring; I ask everyone to take a moment and think about their current relationships and how to bring more passion into their lives. decided to try the Burrito de Atún 1 first, which turned out to be a pleasant opener. It’s a pan-seared big eye tuna wrapped in a crispy golden, yet soft tortilla, with green Chile aioli, fresh jalapeño and serrano chilies. The dish is served with creamy avocado, a crunchy jicama relish and a mouth-watering sesame pasilla sauce.

These bold flavors make it a perfect partner to the subtle atún.

Another fascinating dish is the Alambres de Filet Mignon, 5 which I enjoyed the most. The Negra Modelo beer marinade adds to this beautifully tenderized cut of meat. The apple-smoked bacon is seared on the plancha along with the Filet Mignon so the steak absorbs all the savory flavors. Then, red onion, Portobello mushrooms, poblano and bell peppers on bamboo skewers are added as well.

The filet mignon is served with beer-battered Vidalia onions, a lemon-basil chimichurri and a jalapeño-infused vinegar. The crunch factor of the fresh poblano peppers, along with the wonderful tangy acidity from the Chimichurri vinegar, makes each bite of tender meat and grilled vegetables more exciting than the next.

Next, the Ceviche de Pulpo. 3 This sweet, smoky and chilled course was quite refreshing. The main ingredient is African octopus, which is cooked perfectly and then slowly marinated in an agavesweetened citrus juice blend. Creamy chunks of avocado, crunchy onions and aromatic cilantro are then delicately added.

The colorful concoction is then spiked with a few of my favorite Mexican sauces -both Valentina and Buffalo (a secret I had to swindle and get out of the chef). The ceviche is served in a Crema spice-rimed tall glass, and served with a crispy flour tostada and a creamy avocado mousse.

If you find yourself at Crema for brunch, try the Salmon a la Crema, 2 which is a Mexican-style Eggs Benedict finished with a dollop of jalapeño-poblano hollandaise sauce.

A trip to Crema isn’t complete without trying a few signature cocktails by Crema Mixologist Eduardo Velazquez. One of the most popular drinks is appropriately named Labios Calientes, 6 or hot lips, which combines tequila reposada, freshly-squeezed lime juice with muddled mint, and both habanero and jalapeño peppers. It’s then sweetened with organic agave nectar and garnished with a red-hot chile. Labios smacking good!

Another cocktail to try is the Mora Margarita. 7 The drink starts off with fresh blueberries, which are muddled and then shaken with 100% agave tequila, orange liqueur and fresh lime juice. Berry, berry good!

My experience at Crema will most certainly not be my last. The warm and attentive service, combined with the cozy and sexy ambiance, delectable and creative food, and cocktails makes this restaurant a recipe for success in my book.

ver the past few years, this neighborhood has slowly made a dramatic shift, thanks to the addition of several new restaurants, boutiques and most recently, Corcho, an intimate wine bar that is making neighborhood residents think twice about leaving Upper Manhattan to find nightlife downtown.

“We wanted to make this a place where you feel at home,” says Corcho co-owner Benlly Polanco, who moved to the neighborhood in 1997 from the Dominican Republic and grew very enthusiastic for the nightlife in other parts of Manhattan.

“I went all over the city and brought it back here,” says Polanco.

“I saw a need. We want to contribute to the community.”

The selection at Corcho rivals some of the city’s more popular wine bars. The menu features dozens of fine wines, beers and tapas.

Nearby, at the Mexican restaurant Papasito, it’s often difficult to even find an open table.

These new businesses are making a big difference. Susana Osorio, who has ownership in two popular restaurants on Dyckman Street, remembers how things used to be, in a time before the neighborhood became alive and vibrant.

“Ten years ago, there was nothing around here,” she says. “Now, you don’t have to go downtown to eat. You have a Japanese restaurant, Latin, Mexican and there’s a new Italian restaurant opening up.

This neighborhood is empowering a lot of people.”

Osorio grew up in Washington Heights and Inwood, and has been a regular in the area since 1984, when she came to the United States from the Dominican Republic. She has now reinvested in Upper Manhattan, sharing ownership in the popular Dominican restaurant Mamajuana Café and Mama Sushi, which she says employ more than 65 neighborhood residents.

It’s not just locals taking notice to the area’s revival. During warm nights, many of Dyckman Street’s eateries seat people outside, and the ambiance rivals that of popular restaurant strips in midtown, Chelsea or even Miami. Not everyone in the neighborhood is happy about the area’s sudden popularity, and the noise along Dyckman Street has been brought up in several area Community Board meetings. But business owners say that the area is benefiting financially from its popularity. Some are traveling from other boroughs and even from out of state to enjoy the nightlife the neighborhood offers.

Bronx resident Zach Shultz, 25, regularly indulges at Mama Sushi, just a few storefronts down.“It’s amazing,” says Shultz. “It’s an interesting fusion, the mix of a traditional Japanese-style sushi roll with things like salami and queso.”

Mama Sushi was the dream of Osorio, who says the traditional Japanese rolls of rice and raw fish are her favorite food. But with so many different sushi eateries in Manhattan and as a way to appeal to some area residents who aren’t quite comfortable with the traditional selections, Osorio collaborated with Mitsuhisa Nishio, a Dominicanborn chef of Japanese heritage. The pair came up with a unique menu that not only has traditional selections, but sushi rolls that incorporate popular Latin foods like sweet plantains, ham, bacon and barbecued rib.

On a recent Monday evening, the small restaurant was completely full. Orlando Binet, 29, also of the Bronx, was pleasantly surprised with both the traditional and Latin-influenced sides of sushi menu.

“This is my first time here, but I’ll definitely be back,” says Binet, sipping on the restaurant’s signature passion fruit margarita. “At first I was skeptical, but I was pleasantly surprised.”

endón, while recently filming on location in the big apple for her current telenovela with a production team from Colombia, took a moment to flip through a copy of My Lifestyle Magazine on a Manhattan sidewalk. Just days later, she was doing her photo shoot for the publication, complimenting all of the other glamorous and exquisite Latinas who have appeared on our cover.

“The Latina woman is cheerful, she’s life,” explains Rendón in Spanish. “It’s something that you carry in your genes and in your blood. There are so many beautiful women all over the world, but it’s that cheerfulness, that calor Latino that we have.”

The opportunity to film in the United States is a milestone for her and light-years from where she began.

The 36-year-old actress was raised in the central Colombian city of Manizales and studied industrial design in college before getting her shot of a lifetime - a scholarship by Colombian television station RCN TV.

“Be young, like a kid almost. If you have happiness inside you there will always be beauty.”

She soon arrived in Bogotá and never looked back.

She can sing - having released two pop albums. She can dance - having won the Colombian version of the hit television show “Dancing with the Stars.” As she reflects on her tremendous success, the humble actress characterizes her rise to stardom as a dream come true.

“My family doesn’t have this kind of background,” says Rendón of becoming a celebrity. “It’s just inside of me. I need to express myself, whether it’s painting, writing or acting.”

Rendón made her television debut in 1996 on the hit telenovela “Copas Amargas,” then moved on to a lead role in the show “Tabú” a few years later. She’s done theater and acted in a handful of films, including “La voz de las Alas” and the Venezuelan drama “Venezzia.”

Rendón more recently starred in the show “Berumúdez” on Caracol TV. Now, as she walks the streets of the big apple, a whole new world of possibility is opening up to her. She’s ready to reach out for more. Rendón is inspired.

“The people are on the subway, in the street…for me, as an actress, it’s very good see a lot of different kinds of people,” says the lighthearted entertainer of interacting with the different cultures of New York.

Rendón’s desire to test her own limits as an actress and expand beyond Colombia doesn’t seem like much of an obstacle for her. She actually approaches life as a world of possibility.

“Believe in yourself and what you’re doing,” says Rendón to those wanting to follow in her footsteps. “Be young, like a kid almost. If you have happiness inside you there will always be beauty.”

T

his is the story of a legend and a great love. This is the story of a tenacious but loving woman, who lived through great danger and sorrow with incredible courage and the heart of a rebel.

Forty-five years after Che’s assassination in Bolivia in 1967, his widow and the great love of his life has finally released her memoir of their years together. They met as fellow guerrillas during the revolutionary war in Cuba and married in June 1959, a few months after the revolution. They had four children together.

Here, with great passion and poignancy, Aleida describes their shared dreams for the future and their family. She recalls her first meeting with the Argentine doctor turned Cuban revolutionary and how she learned of his death in Bolivia.

An intensely private person, Aleida relates how she struggled to come to terms with her private loss while under the international spotlight of millions of others who also mourned the death of the worldfamous icon of the 1960s. She describes her efforts to raise their four children as normal Cuban children away from the public gaze.

Included in this book is a remarkable short story Che wrote when he learned of his mother’s death, in which he reflects on his own mortality.

With poems and letters Che wrote to Aleida, along with almost 100 unpublished photographs from the family albums, readers have never before been offered such an intimate insight into the man who remains one of the great political symbols of our time.

Having told herself she would never talk about how she felt when Che left Cuba first for the Congo, Africa, and later Bolivia, Aleida found the process of writing this memoir intensely painful. On a recent promotional tour of Remembering Che in Argentina, Aleida’s daughter described how she often found her mother in tears with the tape recorder in her hands. “My mother has always been a very private person,” said Aleidita Guevara. “She closed herself up during 49

all these years. She would not allow herself to break the dyke and release her feelings. I think she thought that if she did, she could not stop the flood.”

Aleida March was the youngest child in a poor family living in a rural village in central Cuba. As a trainee teacher, she became an active member of the underground movement opposing the Batista dictatorship. She met Che in 1958 on an assignment as a courier taking a package of money and documents to the guerrillas in the Escambray Mountains. She was portrayed by Catalina Sandino (“Maria, Full of Grace”) in Steven Soderbergh’s epic biopic, “Che,” starring Benicio del Toro in the title role. Now in her 70s, Aleida is the director of the Che Guevara Studies Center, Cuba. She lives with her four children and numerous grandchildren in Havana.

If this sounds like you, there’s good news - it’s still not too late to get organized and make this a prosperous year.

The first step is getting your finances to serve you. The only way you can accomplish this is to get a clear picture of how much you own and how much you owe.

There are several tools to help you get organized and to track your money. If you are comfortable with technology, programs like Quicken

by Intuit and Mint.com, a cloud based solution, allow you to enter your financial information. The platforms then produce reports on how you are spending your money and even have the ability to connect directly to your financial institutions to keep your accounts up to date on an ongoing basis, with very little work on your part.

If you are less comfortable with technology, create a template listing all your assets (such as your checking account, any savings accounts, cash, investment and retirement accounts, etc.) on the left side of the page and all your liabilities (such as any credit card accounts, car loans, your mortgage, any personal loans, student loans, etc.) on the right side. Use this sheet to write down the current balance of each account when you pay your bills each month. By summing the accounts on the left and then the accounts on the right, you will see how much you own and how much you owe.

Managing

Create a system to help you keep your finances up to date at all times.

One way to get started is to call all of your financial institutions and ask to have your billing cycle go by the calendar month. That way, all your statements come around the same time (usually the first week of the next month), and all your bills will be due at around the same time. You then only need to sit down once a month to do to pay your bills, review your accounts and make reconciliations.

From a task management perspective, remember to eliminate, automate, delegate, or do it. If you have accounts that you no longer use, or

you’ve collected extra accounts that you don’t need, eliminate them to simplify your financial management process. Next, automate as much as you can. If you have bills that are the same every month, have your bank pay them on an auto-pay using online banking or you can automatically charge them to your credit card. This will help you minimize the amount of time you need to spend each month on your accounts.

Lastly, set up an approximate monthly budget. You can create it with a piece of paper or use a spreadsheet (such as Microsoft Excel, OpenOffice, or Google Docs). List your sources of income for each month at the top of the document. Next, subtract all your regular monthly expenses. Then take out any payments you have for debt service. What’s left is the amount you can either put towards lowering your debts, savings, or use for additional spending. Of course, unexpected things will arise, but the longer you work your budget, the more accurate you will become and the better you will be at planning for the unexpected.

Reviewing

The last step is to look at the whole picture. Everyone should have some type of financial team. It might just be you and your spouse. Or it might include your accountant or financial planner. Maybe you just have a trusted friend who’s good with numbers and money that you want to support you. It doesn’t matter who is on your team, the goal is that they should help you make the best decisions regarding your financial future. Meeting with them on a regular basis (monthly, quarterly, or yearly depending on the individual needs that you have) will keep you on top of your finances and your financial planning. Even if you don’t have savings, just reviewing your finances to check on the rates that you are paying on your credit card debt, or your 2nd mortgage, for example, can open your eyes to ways to save money and to plan for a healthier future.

While these concepts may seem like a lot to tackle, if you take them one step at a time, you’ll transform your entire financial picture more quickly than you thought possible. Remember, the way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time. That’s also the way to get your financial house in order and to get onto the path to financial freedom.

Notice that I used the word “invest” instead “spend” because each second of your time is an investment that will build your future, one of success or one of mediocrity.

In life, there are two types of people, those that affect your life and those that infect your life. Love everyone and choose your peers.

And of course, if you are the smartest of your group, get yourself a new group.

Now think about these questions for a moment: What is your vision in life? What are your wildest dreams?

Having clear goals allows you to understand the impact that the people around you have in the manifestation of those goals. Many people don’t want you to take the “risk” of following your dreams because they want to protect you from suffering if you fail to achieve them. What they don’t know is that there is no bigger failure than not pursuing your dreams. Are you listening to people that are living a life they love and are fulfilled with their results? Remember the quote that says: “By their fruits you will know them”.

It is also important for you to remember that when you’re growing, others will do the same. And others will leave because they are not willing to step into their greatness. Love them by letting them go.

Respect everyone’s right to evolve on their own time.

Some people get intimidated when you choose a higher path and because they don’t understand it, they can go against it. The

light can be painful for those who want to remain in darkness, but never stop shining. Like Nelson Mandela’s words in the poem by Marianne Williamson: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

4. If you are single, write out a list that describes the person that you want your love partner to be, and make sure to specify what is negotiable and what is non-negotiable. If you are married, also make the list. This will help you see if anything between you and your partner got off track, as well as what can be affecting the relationship between the two of you.

5. Visualize the kind of person that you are looking for: cut a picture out of a magazine and put it on top of the list of attributes you created. Replace your fear in the search

for love with faith through prayer, meditation or reflection. Faith is the key to get what you want in life, including your love partner. If you are married, think back to the best time in your relationship and reinstate it. Implement all your rituals from when you were dating and have fun with your partner.

6. Get into action. Go out on blind dates, if that is what it takes to get in the game. Ask friends to match you up with their friends. Most importantly, get out there and meet people!

One thing to remember when going on blind dates is that it should only be for coffee or tea, during the day and in a very public place. Rodrigo Teixeira 3D and Visual effects supervisor of the film Hugo Imagine leaving your country with just five hundred dollars in your pocket, not knowing what the future holds, but ready to follow a dream. It was a great pleasure for me to speak with Rodrigo Teixeira from the Academy award winning film HUGO. Rodrigo took time out of his busy schedule to tell us about his journey. His achievements are inspiring.

It made him start imagining how it would be to work behind the scenes creating animation, to bring such emotion to a film and to deliver a dramatic impact. He felt a connection with this film, and that impact inspired him to pursue his dream. Rodrigo left Porto Alegre (Brazil) and came to California (United States) to live with close friend Rodrigo Dorsch from his hometown, who was living in West Hollywood and working as a manager at a famous Brazilian restaurant called Bossa Nova. Rodrigo introduced his friend to the film Industry, and now Rodrigo Dorsch is also working in visual effects.

Rodrigo Teixeira was really determined to achieve his goals in America. He didn’t have enough money. Life was very expensive and difficult. Rodrigo didn’t have a car, so he had to depend on public transportation and walked 10 miles every day while knocking on doors to distribute copies of his creations. After 33 days, he found the big break he needed - landing his first job work57

ing as a graphic designer for two years creating small productions. One day, he met Ben Grossmann and they became good friends.

Ben invited Rodrigo to a gathering at the beach and introduced him to people in the film industry. While at the beach, a man with a beard approached Rodrigo and asked him what he was doing here in United States. Rodrigo was modest and responded, “I am pursuing a dream.” During the conversation, Rodrigo told him how the movie Independence Day changed his life. The man with the beard responded “It is so funny! This movie also changed my life; it gave me my first OSCAR”.

Rodrigo was speechless because he realized he was talking to Volker Engel, Visual Effects Supervisor of the movie Independence Day. One year later, Volker Engel contacted Rodrigo and offered him the opportunity to work on a small movie. Surprisingly, Rodrigo was paired with Director Roland Emmerich, the director of Independence Day. This new production was the movie “The Day After Tomorrow.” Rodrigo also went on to work on other films, such as Superman Returns,

2012, Alice in Wonderland, and many others.

His most recent work as the 3D Supervisor for the film HUGO was nominated for 11 awards and earned 5 OSCARS. This movie was very special for Rodrigo because he had the opportunity to work with the same crew from his earlier film “Ring of the Nibelung.”

It was an incredible experience for him because they had 500 people from nine different countries.

Rodrigo is a very warm hearted person whose career has skyrocketed here in the United States. As a Brazilian man living in this country, he’s living his dream and proving that anything is possible.

os Premios Grammy han generado un impacto económico sin precedentes en la industria discográfica. Este galardón creado en 1958 para el mercado en inglés es considerado como el equivalente al Oscar, cuyo inicio se remonta hacia el año 1928. Según datos revelados por la revista Billboard, ella es la artista femenina internacional con más ventas hasta la fecha.

También ha sido ganadora en dos ocasiones del Premio Grammy y ocho veces se ha llevado el Grammy Latino a su casa. La empresa “Live Nation” considera a Shakira la artista de esta generación por su impacto global claramente consolidado. Según la revista Forbes, es una de las cantantes que más fortuna tiene, le sigue Gloria Estefan, Luis Miguel, Mana, Marco Antonio Solis, Juan Luis Guerra entre otros.

creado otro fenómeno de gran impacto en la cultura latina y es el hecho de que artistas como Calle 13, por nombrar alguno, estén promoviendo corrientes de opinión que impactan el volumen de sus ventas y la manera de pensar de muchos de sus seguidores, el grupo se convirtió en el principal protagonista de los Latin Grammy’s del 2011, cuya gala inauguró cantando el premiado tema, acompañado de la Orquesta Sinfónica de Venezuela bajo la dirección de Gustavo Dudamel.

Este año, la muerte de la cantante Whitney Houston en los Angeles un día antes de la entrega de los Grammy’s en su edición 54, generó un ambiente de consternación entre los participantes. S

e conocen varias definiciones sobre salud mental entre ellos la de la organización mundial de la salud que se refiere en su generalidad “el bienestar” prevención, atención, rehabilitación y es cuando la persona es consciente de su plena capacidad y hasta diríamos está dispuesto a ser feliz.

Estar sano en lo cotidiano es saber enfrentar el despertar en la mañana y levantarnos a la lucha por la vida. Son pocos a los que el stress les proviene de no hacer nada, porque sus necesidades extra básicas están extravagantemente satisfechas y no saben en que invertir su tiempo; la mayoría de la población humana sabemos que tenemos que trabajar y producir para sobrevivir. A esos humanos es que quiero dirigirme para compartirles una reflexión sobre lo benéfico de construir una cultura de las finanzas domésticas y familiares sostenible.

Tener las finanzas personales resueltas ayuda a que estemos menos vulnerables a las enfermedades mortales ya más comunes en la humanidad. El stress que puede ser causante de los accidentes cardiovasculares, de los numerosos cánceres, de las enfermedades puntuales, pueden ser oca63

sionados por los cobros extras que cada vez ponen en jaque a las economías del mundo; las hipotecas, y los cobros ejecutivos bancarios y fiscales infartan las bolsas de valores y alteran las finanzas de la humanidad. Si somos conscientes todo empieza en las manías del consumo que desorganizan las pequeñas economías domésticas, cuando una persona gasta más de lo que produce en sus ingresos reales y esa bola de nieve crece y crece hasta lo que ya conocemos de la crisis mundial.

“Hay que pagar lo que se debe para saber lo que se tiene” Hablemos pues de la educación financiera; cuando fui Gobernante de mi bello departamento de Risaralda en Colombia me guié por un principio tradicional de mis ancestros “Hay que pagar lo que se debe para saber lo que se tiene”. Así contribuí a que mi departamento recuperara la viabilidad financiera en Colombia. Pues aquí desde Manhattan y desde esta gran dignidad que

me dio mi presidente quiero contribuir con la comunidad mundial invitándoles a que incorporemos a nuestra educación básica y nuestras diarias acciones, mejores prácticas financieras en el uso de los recursos.

Que no nos sobre endeudemos, que NO planeemos nuestra vida pagando hipotecas y tarjetas de crédito a 30 años abonando únicamente la cuota mínima mensual; que más bien paguemos más rápido y en lo posible no adquirir deudas y más bien ahorrar. Que entendamos que es muy valiosa nuestra salud mental basada en el relax frente a las deudas, que nos preparemos para salir de los créditos, que seamos buenos pagadores y que en adelante entendamos que si tenemos una economía familiar sostenible no tendremos que acudir a horarios extras ni trabajos extras por que habremos entendido que la familia y el disfrute de lo elemental vale más que la competencia del consumo y que si estamos más organizados en las finanzas personales damos mejores resultados en las relaciones interpersonales, laborales y sociales.

La salud financiera nos hace más productivos y nos permite ser más felices familiarmente. El gran patrimonio definitivamente es la educación en la economía personal, eso nos ayuda a la salud mental y seremos así mejores personas.

Me pasó una vez cuando me disponía a dejar el gimnasio de mi vecindad y es que estaba tan inmersa en mis pensamientos que no me di cuenta que se estaba haciendo tarde para llegar a casa. Eso de hacer una hora de cardio diaria después de una jornada de trabajo, no sólo te hace sentir renovada, bella, sino que te da toda la energía del mundo para llegar a tu hogar y continuar con tus quehaceres diarios. Al día siguiente te sientes sorprendida con los deseos que tienes de salir a la calle y empezar tu rutina de trabajo. Y todo gracias a tu actividad física, gran cargadora de tus pilas. Ah, pero no te olvides que estos ejercicios físicos van de la mano de una buena alimentación.

Por Claudia Morales En estas y las otras, estaba como lo dije anteriormente, pensando en cómo combinar mi rutina diaria de ejercicios con alimentos que me dieran los nutrientes que mi organismo necesita para su mantenimiento, cuando se me ocurrió que en vez de llegar a casa a cenar algo pesado, como lo he venido haciendo en los últimos años, más bien me prepararé una buena ensalada de tomates frescos, lechuga, cebolla roja y pepino. Y como complemento, me haré un poco de té y una tostada con queso. Estoy segura que ingiriendo estos alimentos después de hacer mis ejercicios y esperando un tiempo prudente para acostarme. Perderé ese peso que tanto necesito para que mis más preciados pantalones me puedan servir otra vez.

Todo ésto lo voy tejiendo en mi cabeza mientras estoy sacando las llaves de mi auto, y cargando un bolso tan grande, no logro ubicarlas en el tiempo que debería. La próxima vez, me compraré un bolso más pequeño para no pasar tanto rato en la búsqueda de las dichosas llaves. ¡Sorpresa! ahí están las llaves y ya vi mi carro. Ahora sólo me falta 65

llegar a él, abrirlo y ya. De pronto, siento que alguien me está llamando la atención. De momento pensé que era alguien que estaba vacilando para darme a entender que estaba guapa. Dios mío, me dije, ya se están viendo los resultados de mi ardua labor diaria en mi gimnasio. Siendo así me pondré más difícil y coqueta que siempre. Ya me sentía como en pasarela. Mi curiosidad fue creciendo más a medida que iba sintiendo esa voz más cerca de mi. De pronto viré hacía de donde me imagino provenía esa voz y me encontré con un hombre joven, con una de las sonrisas más bellas que haya visto en mi vida. “Señora”, me dijo, “se le cayó el I-POD”. ¿A quién le interesa un I-POD si me acabaron de llamar SEÑORA? El cuento es que a todas nos llegará el momento en que nos dirán SEÑORA y la verdad es que para muchas de nosotras es como si nos estuvieran diciendo que nuestra juventud ya pasó y que lo que nos espera es una vida diferente, de pronto menos atractiva, a la que hemos tenido hasta el momento. Pero amigas, eso no tiene que ser así. Si llevamos una vida sana, de ejercicios, buena alimentación y men-

te positiva, tendremos una segunda juventud y podemos disfrutar igual o quizás más intensamente esta otra etapa y nos vamos a sentir cómodas y atractivas para nosotros mismas y para las personas que nos rodean.

Finalmente, quiero recordarles que el mundo está rodeado de SEÑORAS bellísimas y triunfadoras, tales como Salma Hayek, Charytin Goyco, Cristina Saralegui, Hilary Clinton, y tu.

La Vida Es Un Carnaval

¿Qué sucede cuando mezclas el Carnaval de Venecia, el Carnaval de Río, Mardi Gras y el Carnaval de Barranquilla, todo en un mismo lugar como Cartagena?

Suena alucinante y apenas concebible un evento así, un sueño para todo aquel que guste de las buenas celebraciones y disfrute de los encantos de las mejores fiestas.

Fanny Guzman y Leslie Larios de FGL Eventos y Logística Ltda., fueron las responsables de sacar adelante esta memorable tarea de poner todos estos elementos juntos de manera mágica y armoniosa; porque estamos hablando de carnavales y alegría, se debe tener en cuenta que cada uno es muy diferente a los demás; por esta razón dedicaron casi un año a la preparación de la gran fiesta de celebración del cumpleaños de nuestro amigo Juan Plaza.

El marco no podía ser más hermoso, el Teatro Heredia, patrimonio de la ciudad y nombrado así en honor al fundador, estaba engalanado para recibir a los 200 invitados especiales, el ambiente, perfectamente decorado y preparado. Habían reunido todos los elementos, que en perfecto equilibrio brillaban de manera espectacular en el escenario de tan fastuoso sitio.

A las ocho de la noche inició la fiesta; tras la bellísima alfombra roja, estaban un arlequín y una dama de Venecia dándole la bienvenida a todos lo amigos que acompañaron a Juan en su cumpleaños; en el hall de entrada, un conjunto de música cubana y un cóctel eran la antesala para los invitados, entre los cuales estaban el cantante Mexicano Cristian Castro, la senadora por el estado de Rhode Island Donna Nesselbush y la motivadora personal y líder de transformación mundial Karen Hoyos.

La iluminación del teatro, le brindó un efecto mágico a la noche, las mesas estaban decoradas con manteles de organza en los tonos y colores que evocaban las cálidas noches de Mardi Gras en Nueva Orleans: verde,

púrpura y dorado; los centros de mesa, eran hermosas máscaras venecianas que delicadamente adornaban unos altos y elegantes vasos de cristal.

En cada una de las sillas Chivari algunos objetos, como collares de cuentas, serpientes de plumas, máscaras y coloridos sombreros de copa fueron dejados estratégicamente para cada uno de los invitados a esta celebración. Esta colorida atmósfera fue complementada con un grandioso pastel de carnaval.

El menú estuvo fantástico, fue una exquisita mezcla de lo mejor del sabor peruano, la magia y el misterio europeo y el exotismo de la cocina cartagenera que, acompañada por un hermoso solo de saxofón, transformó la cena en un momento encantador.

Más tarde, la banda Bahía Azul encendió la fiesta, invitando a todos a demostrar sus habilidades para el baile en una sorprendente pista llena de luces y color. El show central de la noche no se hizo esperar, el grupo de danza Ekobios presentó una bellísima fusión de carnavales, que fundió en uno solo, el espíritu de la fiesta. Todo inició con una remembranza de las noches de Venecia en carnaval con una bella mascarada, luego una revista musical de Charleston, al mejor estilo de Lousiana, para seguir con una impresionante Batucada del Carnaval de Río y terminar en una explosión de júbilo con la Danza del Garabato, típica del Carnaval de Barranquilla.

La fiesta se extendió hasta las cuatro de la mañana, terminando con una “Parranda Vallenata”, una de las más amadas tradiciones de la Costa Caribe Colombiana.

Estamos seguros de que Juan tuvo un excelente cumpleaños y una memorable bienvenida al club de los 50’s. Todo esto simplemente porque “La vida es un carnaval”.

E

mpezaré dando gracias a Dios y a la vida por tantas cosas lindas que me han sucedido en estos 50 años.

Emigrar de mi país a mis 26 años y enfrentarme a un mundo completamente diferente al que crecí y me eduqué. Salí con una maleta llena de sueños que poco a poco se fueron materializando y hoy solo resta agradecer al todopoderoso y aquellos que han creído en mi.

La vida me ha enseñado a valorar todo lo que tengo alrededor, mi familia y mis amigos son parte fundamental y por eso en mi quincuagésimo cumpleaños, quise reunirlos a todos en una gran celebración, que estuvo muy variada y fueron cinco días, uno por cada 10 años vividos, reuní a los que pudieron acompañarme y aquellos otros que debido a las fechas navideñas era imposibilitada la asistencia. Estuvieron siempre presente esa noche en espíritu.

Todo empezó el 25 de Diciembre, que es la fecha de mi cumpleaños, esa noche nos reunimos con los más intimos, cerca de 60 personas en los patios del Edificio Santo Domingo, donde una papayera, un conjunto vallenato amenizó esa velada.

Disfrutamos de comida típica a la que mi madre Rosa Zuniga nos acostumbró a comer en esta época como los pasteles. Ese día también le daba la bienvenida a mis amigos Pablo Soto que llegaron de Costa Rica, Angela y Loli de Madrid y Angel Fregoso de Guadalajara, México.

Luego el 28 en la mañana disfrutamos de un desayuno típico en la playa ofrecido por doña Miriam Arrieta en su hotel Derust. Llegó después la noche de celebración en el Teatro Heredia donde el teatro brilló más que las luces que adornaban el entorno, iluminaba porque todos mis invitados hacían de esa noche algo inolvidable.

Como dije en mi discurso de bienvenida, era una noche muy importante, no porque yo festejaba, sino porque estaba rodeado de gente importante para mi que habían venido de diferentes partes del mundo para acompañarme. Fue de mucha sorpresa para mi

los discursos ofrecidos por mi gran amigo Español Ivan Salvador y también por la mención expresada por la senadora Donna Nesselbush, culminando la fantástica noche de gala.

El 29 nos reunimos todos en el muelle de la Bodeguita para disfrutar de un paseo en Catamaran por la Bahía de Cartagena y luego desembarcar en el Club De Pesca para una cena con la hermosa vista de la bahía para despedir a mis amigos que ya se regresaban a sus países.

“La vida me a enseñado ha valorar todo lo que tengo alrededor, mi familia y mis amigos son parte fundamental”.

El 30 nos embarcamos en un paseo a la finca de la familia Herrera Plaza, mis primos quienes nos recibieron con variedad de fritos típicos cartageneros, música y todo lo demás y finalizando con un suculento sancocho que fue la delicia de los invitados. A la hora de regresar Steve Mc Carney y su esposa querían permanecer alli, estaban relajados en las hamacas y admirando el paisaje de esa bella tierra.

Realmente me podría extender aun más pero quiero finalizar agradeciendo a mi familia y amigos por hacerme sentir importante.

El 28 de Diciembre quedó grabado en mi y espero que quizá podamos celebrar nuevamente en cinco años más.
