inter seemed to go on and on this year. We are all looking forward to a warm summer. The sort of days you can see on our front cover in the beautiful picture taken by featured photographer, Joe Condron.

This colourful issue will give you ideas for activities, local treasures and tipples, and much more.

Kicking off with an inspirational interview with the Head of Zermatt’s rescue service, we also introduce a different type of hero, the “Strahler” who seeks out mountain crystals. The fast world of mountain biking leads neatly on to hiking and we give you some tips about our favourite walks. But if the rain makes the outdoors a less welcoming option, take a look at our list of hotel swimming pools and spas. We have an exclusive insight into a spectacular theatre event for 2015. Bruno Jelk The Human Face of Mountain Rescue

‘Thirty-two years later he is still in charge and has been involved in over 3500 mountain rescues.’

Z

ermatt is a high altitude world with many 4000 metre peaks that lure people into its wilderness, sometimes with tragic consequences. Often the humanity of the rescuers is hidden from the rest of us, lost amid the clatter of helicopters and the sad reality of who pays the bills.

We talk to Bruno Jelk, head of the rescue service for over 30 years, who has worked tirelessly to make Zermatt a safer place.

Bruno Jelk is a busy man. He arrives a little late and explains that he has been heli skiing with guests up on Alphubel.

ZT – We were going to ask what happens if you are with guests on the mountain and get a rescue call.

Bruno – There are twelve mountain guides who take it in turns to do rescue duty for one week at a time. This works out at about 6 weeks per year. They must be able to get to Air Zermatt in 10 minutes at all times. This was only implemented two years ago, before then it was voluntary.

His phone rings and in his short conversation I notice his accent is not from Zermatt. So when he finishes I ask where he comes from. Born in 1943 in Canton Fribourg, Bruno grew up on an alp. After

a border patrol position at the St Bernard pass he came to Zermatt in 1972, aged 29, to take over at Testa Grigia. His position as head of the border guards was to patrol the frontier that runs from Saas Almagel to the Matterhorn.

Bruno made the most of this environment and regular salary to follow courses to become a ski instructor and a Mountain Guide. As the years went by, he took on more responsibility, coordinating training between the ski school and the rescue department.

René Arnold, the head of rescue for the whole of Switzerland at that time, was also in charge of Zermatt. Bruno knew him well and they had worked together to improve courses in mountain rescue. In 1980 René was involved in a collision with a skier and was killed.

The Zermatt Gemeinde and the Swiss Alpine Club asked Bruno Jelk to take over René’s position for a year. Thirty-two years later he is still in charge and has been involved in over 3500 mountain rescues.

What advice would you give to someone who is going to climb a mountain?

They should always progress from easy to more difficult, not go directly to the hard peaks. A lot of people tend to overestimate themselves. When someone is tired it’s more likely that there will be an accident. The 5

problem is that people go to places they are not ready for. Not reading the weather conditions properly is another one. People have a programme – ‘I have holidays from then to then and I want to do this and this’.

If the situation is not right for a particular summit they should do something else.

‘Perhaps if I can’t climb the Matterhorn this time, I’ll climb the Breithorn.’

What medical help accompanies a rescue?

Nearly always there is a doctor with us.

We work with a great team who take it in turns. For doctors who love climbing and the mountains the job is very sought after but they have to be familiar with mountaineering.

There have been occasions on the Matterhorn that we have anchored a doctor onto the North Face so he is able to do his work without moving the victim. This obviously has to be in favourable conditions and with a doctor who is used to climbing.

Otherwise we would take the patient out of the immediate area to a safe landing place and the doctor can take over.

The nature of this job must be disturbing.

How do you manage this?

Yes, it is not for everyone. I have probably bought down around 600 bodies from the mountain. You have the constitution for this or you haven’t, it’s not something you can learn or train for.

What was harder for me was when there were fatal accidents, often young people.

Then the families come. You have to talk to them and try to explain what has happened.

For me this is always hard. I have learnt now that it’s best to tell them straight away exactly what has happened. If you try to soften the blow people see that and think you’re hiding something. It’s best to be factual no matter how hard it might sound. They often ask if they suffered. This is a question that I can’t answer without a doctor’s enquiry but in climbing accidents deaths are often quick.

But it’s difficult for people to understand the physical situation where their loved ones died. It’s useful in these situations to take family members up in the helicopter and show them where it was that they fell from and where they were found. This helps and

in the end they are more at ease. This is the most difficult part for me.

How do you prepare yourself for the physical demands of the job?

Climbing. Keeping in shape for climbing is important. On a rescue you are plonked from a helicopter straight on the North Face of the Matterhorn. As the helicopter flies away, you are left clinging to the rock unsecured. You can’t be attached to the helicopter so through climbing practice you get the familiarity with that feeling.

You were also in Sochi for the Olympics.

Tell us how that came about.

Well that’s a completely different story. Two years ago I got a surprise call from Russia that they were looking for an avalanche specialist for the Winter Olympics. Winter 2013 I went there for three months. They had good people who knew about skiing, how to read the mountain to avoid avalanches, but no idea about explosives or other techniques for avalanche prevention. They had built a new chairlift for the Olympics but did not know

how to rescue people should the thing break down. I trained three locals from the avalanche rescue and three from the piste patrollers. With the help of a translator I was able to give them some manuals in Russian to study.

I went again to the actual Olympics. They had worked 24 hours a day on the downhill piste, building avalanche dams etc. Coordinating one hundred people to do the job was not easy but they were really friendly. I have to say I was a bit sceptical of their mentality at first but they were all easy going and interested to learn.

It was a very positive experience for me and I had to change my opinion of the Russian people, they were very welcoming.

You have been involved with international rescues, particularly in Nepal. We would love to hear about this.

We are working on a Nepalese operation, training Nepalese helicopter pilots and Sherpa guides in the Himalaya.

This is how it began. A legendary Slovenian alpinist, Mr. Humar, had an accident on Langtan Lirung. He had set off his own alarm system alerting the Slovenian authorities. The Sherpa guides trekked the snowy slopes where he was supposed to be but could not find him.

He had been climbing a very difficult ridge and heavy snowfall prevented further searches for two days.

We are members of ICA R, The International Commission for Alpine Rescue, comprising of 34 countries. The Slovenians asked us if we could go to Nepal to rescue their famous Alpinist. Together with the head of Air Zermatt, Gerold Biner, we decided to give it a go, even though we did not know what to expect when we got there.

Luckily one of our mountain guides, Simon Anthamatten, had just returned from Nepal so was fully acclimatised.

We got the earliest flight from Zurich to Nepal and chartered a heli. We found the body, a bit lower than he should have been, flew him out on a 30 metre rope but he was already dead. Six days after his last rescue alarm, it had taken too long.

This planted a seed. If we could train the local people to do rescues themselves it would increase the chances of success.

On my return I asked Gerold Biner if this is feasible. He said it’s not so easy. We would need permission from the Nepalese government, go-ahead from the aviation authority and certification for the helicopters.

So we invited one representative from each to Zermatt and demonstrated some rescues on the Riffelhorn. They were impressed and decided to embrace the training.

So, we went down to Nepal in high season but ended up doing lots of rescues and too little training.

Sadly, when we came home there was a set back. They had attempted a rescue on Ama Dablam and had an accident with a helicopter. One of the pilots and a Sherpa that we had trained were killed. We questioned whether we should continue but this was something that will help save lives.

So we decided to carry on.

Our philosophy is that if we want to rescue people down there, then the local people must be able to do it themselves. It’s proven it makes no sense for us to go from Europe.

We get there too late. Now they are at a stage they can do it themselves. We help them with training and materials but we don’t do the rescues.

What are you looking to do more of now that you are retiring next year?

Well, I have had an offer to do some training in Åre, Sweden and Czechoslovakia.

The Nepalese project has another arm that I’m working on. In the off season down there the helicopters are sitting around not doing much so we are working with the hospital in Lukla to fly doctors out to remote valleys where there is no medical help to treat villagers.

Last year we flew two doctors and a nurse for three days into a remote area and 772 people came for treatment. Three women had walked for three days to see the doctor.

One of them was very ill and so was flown to the hospital in Lukla.

I would love to work further on this project.

It was always my wish to do something for the local people. The problem is it must be for free. Sceptics say we will never manage to serve all the remote areas in Nepal, but we will start small and when it goes well perhaps the Nepalese will take it over themselves. It took me 20 years to set up the rescue service in Zermatt, it’s not something that happens over night.

We said good-bye and were left with some quite challenging reflections. Bruno’s motivation to do rescues and to share his knowledge must count as a real definition of altruism. This is what he dedicated himself to over his career and his plans for his future take these projects even further.

We left with an impression that he has witnessed how personal ego, quest for glory or even plain thrill seeking can impede the success of an operation. The ability to deal gracefully with victims and their loved ones caught up in what is often a terrifying situation is crucial. In the physically, mentally and emotionally challenging world of mountain rescue, human qualities such as compassion, empathy, tactfulness and sensitivity are what really count.

ermatt bietet eine Hochgebirgslandschaft, die mit ihren vielen Viertausendern die Menschen in eine nahezu unberührte Natur lockt – doch das kann tragische Folgen haben. Die Menschen hinter den Kulissen die bei der Bergretting Dienst leisten bleiben uns dabei oft verbogen. Vor lauter Hubschrauberlärm und angesichts der traurigen Realität zu zahlender Rechnungen gehen sie völlig unter.

Wir sprechen mit Bruno Jelk, der seit über 30 Jahren den Rettungsdienst leitet und sich unermüdlich dafür einsetzt, dass Zermatt sicherer wird.

Bruno Jelk ist Geschäftsmann. Er verspätet sich ein wenig und erklärt, dass er mit Gästen zum Heli-Skiing auf dem Alphubel war.

ZT – Uns würde interessieren, was passiert, wenn Sie mit Gästen auf dem Berg sind und einen Notruf erhalten.

Bruno – Wir haben zwölf Bergführer, die abwechselnd für jeweils eine Woche den Bereitschaftsdienst übernehmen. Damit kommt man auf etwa sechs Wochen pro Jahr. Sie müssen dann jederzeit innerhalb von zehn Minuten bei Air Zermatt eintreffen können. Dieses System wurde erst vor zwei Jahren eingeführt, davor gab es einen Freiwilligendienst.

Sein Telefon klingelt und bei dem kurzen Gespräch, das er führt, fällt mir auf, dass sein Akzent nicht nach Zermatt klingt. Daher frage ich ihn, als er aufgelegt hat, woher er stammt. Bruno kam 1943 im Kanton Freiburg zur Welt und wuchs auf einer Alp auf. Nach einer Anstellung bei der Grenzwache am Sankt Bernhard kam er 1972, im Alter von 29 Jahren, nach Zermatt, um den Posten an der Testa Grigia zu übernehmen. Als Leiter der Grenzwachtstation war er für das Grenzgebiet von Saas-Almagell bis zum Matterhorn zuständig.

Bruno nutzte dieses Umfeld und das regelmässige Einkommen, um Ausbildungen zum Skilehrer und Bergführer zu absolvieren. Im Laufe der Jahre übernahm er mehr und mehr Verantwortung, beispielsweise auch die Koordination zwischen Skischule und Rettungsdienst bei der Ausbildung.

René Arnold, der damalige Rettungschef für die gesamte Schweiz, war auch für Zermatt zuständig. Bruno kannte ihn gut und gemeinsam arbeiteten sie an der Verbesserung der Bergrettungskurse. Nachdem René 1980 bei einem Zusammenprall mit einem Skifahrer tödlich verunglückt war, baten die Gemeinde Zermatt und

der Schweizer Alpen-Club Bruno Jelk, dessen Posten für ein Jahr zu übernehmen. 32 Jahre später ist er immer noch Rettungschef und an mehr als 3500 Bergrettungen beteiligt gewesen.

Was würden Sie jemandem, der einen Berg besteigen will, raten?

Man sollte sich langsam steigern, mit einfachen Touren beginnen und nicht gleich die anspruchsvollen Gipfel erklimmen wollen. Viele Leute neigen zur Selbstüberschätzung. Mit zunehmender Müdigkeit steigt auch die Wahrscheinlichkeit eines Unfalls. Das Problem ist, dass die Leute Orte aussuchen, denen sie noch nicht gewachsen sind. Ein weiteres ist wohl, dass sie die Wetterverhältnisse nicht richtig einschätzen. Sie haben ihr Programm – ‚Ich bin von dann bis dann im Urlaub und dann will ich das und das machen‘. Wenn die Bedingungen für einen bestimmten Gipfel nicht stimmen, sollten sie sich lieber etwas anderes suchen. ‚Wenn ich dieses Mal nicht aufs Matterhorn kann, steige ich vielleicht lieber auf das Breithorn.‘ Welche medizinische Hilfe haben Sie bei einer Rettung dabei?

Fast immer werden wir von einem Arzt begleitet. Wir arbeiten mit einem tollen Team zusammen, das sich immer abwechselt. Bei Ärzten, die gerne klettern und die Berge 12

lieben, ist der Job heissbegehrt, sie müssen jedoch erfahrene Bergsteiger sein.

Am Matterhorn kam es schon vor, dass wir einen Arzt an der Nordwand verankert haben, damit er seine Arbeit verrichten konnte, ohne das Opfer zu bewegen. Das geht natürlich nur bei günstigen Bedingungen und mit einem Arzt, der regelmässig klettert. Andernfalls würden wir den Patienten aus dem Unfallbereich bergen und zu einem sicheren Landeplatz bringen, wo der Arzt dann übernehmen kann.

Diese Arbeit muss einen sehr mitnehmen. Wie kommen Sie damit zurecht?

Ja, dafür ist nicht jeder geeignet. Ich habe wohl schon um die 600 Leichen aus den Bergen geborgen. Entweder ist man dafür gemacht oder eben nicht. Das kann man nicht erlernen oder sich aneignen.

Schlimmer waren für mich die tödlichen Unfälle, häufig junge Menschen. Dann kommen die Familien. Man muss mit ihnen reden und versuchen, ihnen zu erklären, was geschehen ist. Das fällt mir immer sehr schwer. Inzwischen habe ich gelernt, dass es das Beste ist, ihnen gleich ganz konkret zu sagen, was passiert ist. Wenn man versucht, es ihnen schonend beizubringen, merken sie das und haben das Gefühl, man würde etwas verbergen wollen.

Am besten bleibt man ganz sachlich, egal wie schlimm es dann klingt. Oft fragen sie, ob das Opfer gelitten hat. Diese Zermatt Times

Frage kann ich ohne Konsultation eines Arztes nicht beantworten, aber bei Kletterunfällen tritt der Tod oft schnell ein.

Für die Angehörigen ist es jedoch schwierig, die konkrete Situation zu begreifen, in der ihre Lieben ums Leben kamen. Dann kann es sinnvoll sein, mit der Familie im Helikopter raufzufliegen und ihnen zu zeigen, wo das Opfer abgestürzt ist und wo es gefunden wurde.

Das hilft und hinterher geht es ihnen ein wenig besser. Das ist für mich der schwerste Teil der Arbeit.

Wie stellen Sie sich auf die körperlichen Anforderungen des Jobs ein?

Ich klettere. Für das Klettern fit zu bleiben, ist wichtig. Bei einem Einsatz setzt einen der Hubschrauber direkt auf der Nordwand des Matterhorns ab. Sobald der Heli wegfliegt, hängt man alleine ungesichert am Felsen. Man kann nicht am Helikopter befestigt bleiben, also muss man sich durch Klettertraining an dieses Gefühl gewöhnen.

Sie waren auch bei den Olympischen Spielen in Sotschi.

Wie kam es dazu?

Nun, das ist eine ganz andere Geschichte. Vor zwei Jahren bekam ich überraschend einen Anruf aus Russland, weil sie einen Lawinenspezialisten für die Olympischen Winterspiele suchten. Im Winter 2013 war ich für drei Monate dort. Die hatten da gute Leute, die Ahnung vom Skifahren hatten und auch die Berge richtig deuten konnten, um Lawinen zu meiden, aber nichts über Sprengstoffe oder andere Massnahmen zur Lawinenprävention wussten. Für die Olympischen Spiele hatten sie einen neuen Sessellift gebaut, hätten aber bei einem Ausfall niemanden daraus retten können. Ich habe drei einheimische Mitglieder der Lawinenrettung und drei Mitglieder des Pistendienstes ausgebildet. Mithilfe eines Übersetzers konnte ich ihnen einige Leitfäden auf Russisch zu lesen geben.

Zu den eigentlichen Spielen bin ich dann noch mal hin. Es wurde dort rund um die Uhr an der Abfahrtspiste gearbeitet worden, 14

Lawinendämme wurden gebaut usw. Die Koordination von einhundert Arbeitern war keine leichte Aufgabe, aber alle waren sehr nett. Ich muss gestehen, ich hatte anfangs Bedenken bezüglich der Mentalität, doch letztlich waren alle sehr entspannt und wissbegierig.

Für mich war es eine sehr positive Erfahrung und ich musste mein Bild der russischen Bevölkerung revidieren, sie waren sehr gastfreundlich.

Sie waren auch an internationalen Rettungseinsätzen beteiligt, vor allem in Nepal. Erzählen Sie uns doch bitte davon.

Wir beteiligen uns an einer nepalesischen Initiative, bilden im Himalaya nepalesische Hubschrauberpiloten sowie Sherpas zu Bergführern aus.

Das kam so: Ein legendärer slowenischer Bergsteiger, Tomaž Humar, hatte einen Unfall am Langtang Lirung. Er aktivierte sein eigenes Alarmsystem und forderte bei den slowenischen Behörden Hilfe an.

Die Sherpas suchten die verschneiten Hänge ab, an denen er sich befinden sollte, konnten ihn aber nicht finden. Er hatte einen sehr schwierigen Kamm erklommen und aufgrund heftiger Schneefälle musste die Suche zwei Tage lang ausgesetzt werden.

Wir sind Mitglied der IKAR, der Internationalen Kommission für alpines Rettungswesen, an der 34 Länder beteiligt sind. Die Slowenen fragten uns, ob wir nach Nepal reisen könnten, um ihren berühmten Bergsteiger zu retten. Gemeinsam mit Gerold Biner, dem Geschäftsführer von Air Zermatt, beschlossen wir, es zu versuchen, obwohl wir nicht wussten, was uns dort erwarten würde.

Glücklicherweise war einer unserer Bergführer, Simon Anthamatten, gerade erst aus Nepal zurückgekehrt, sodass er also bestens akklimatisiert war.

Wir nahmen den ersten Flug von Zürich nach Nepal und charterten einen Heli. Wir fanden ihn, etwas weiter unten als gedacht, und flogen ihn an einem 30 Meter langen Seil aus, doch er war bereits tot. Seit seinem letzten Notruf waren sechs Tage vergangen, das war zu lange.

Daraus entstand eine Idee. Wenn es uns gelänge, die Menschen vor Zermatt Times

Ort so auszubilden, dass sie die Rettungseinsätze selbst durchführen könnten, wären die Erfolgschancen deutlich höher.

Nach meiner Rückkehr fragte ich Gerold Biner, ob er das für machbar hielt. Er meinte, es würde nicht leicht sein. Wir bräuchten die Genehmigung der nepalesischen Regierung, die Zustimmung der Luftfahrtbehörde und Zulassungen für die Helikopter. Also luden wir jeweils einen Vertreter nach Zermatt ein und demonstrierten ihnen verschiedene Rettungsmassnahmen am Riffelhorn. Sie waren beeindruckt und beschlossen, die Ausbildung zu realisieren.

Also reisten wir in der Hochsaison nach Nepal, mussten letztlich aber so viele Einsätze fliegen, dass kaum Zeit zur Ausbildung blieb.

Als wir wieder heimgekehrt waren, gab es dann leider einen Rückschlag. Bei einem Rettungsversuch an der Ama Dablam gab es einen Unfall mit einem Hubschrauber.

Einer der Piloten und ein Sherpa, die wir ausgebildet hatten, kamen dabei ums Leben. ir waren uns nicht sicher, ob wir weitermachen sollten, doch hier ging es um etwas, das Leben retten kann. Also beschlossen wir, die Arbeit fortzusetzen.

Unsere Philosophie ist: Wenn wir dort Menschenleben retten wollen, müssen die Leute vor Ort selbst dazu in der Lage sein.Es hat sich ja gezeigt, dass es sinnlos ist, wenn wir aus Europa anreisen. Wir sind einfach nicht schnell genug da. Mittlerweile sind sie so weit, dass sie es selbst können Wir helfen ihnen weiterhin mit Schulungen und Materialien, aber die eigentlichen Einsätze übernehmen wir nicht mehr.

Skeptiker sagen, dass es uns niemals gelingen wird, all die entlegenen Flecken in Nepal zu erreichen, aber wir fangen klein an und wenn es gut läuft, werden die Nepalesen es vielleicht in die eigenen Hände nehmen. Ich habe 20 Jahre gebraucht, um den Rettungsdienst in Zermatt aufzubauen, das geht eben nicht über Nacht.

Worauf möchten Sie sich verstärkt konzentrieren, wenn Sie nächstes Jahr in Rente gehen?

Nun, ich hatte Anfragen, Schulungen im schwedischen Åre und in Tschechien zu leiten.

Auch das Projekt in Nepal hat noch einen Ableger, bei dem ich mitarbeite. Wenn dort Nebensaison ist, stehen die Hubschrauber ungenutzt herum, deshalb arbeiten wir mit dem Krankenhaus in Lukla zusammen, um Ärzte in entlegene Täler zu fliegen, wo es sonst keine medizinische Versorgung für die Bewohner gibt.

Letztes Jahr haben wir zwei Ärzte und eine Krankenschwester für drei Tage in ein entlegenes Gebiet geflogen. Dort kamen 772 Menschen, die behandelt werden wollten. Drei Frauen waren drei Tage lang zu Fuss unterwegs gewesen, um einen Arzt sehen zu können. Eine von ihnen war schwerkrank und wurde gleich ins Krankenhaus nach Lukla geflogen.

An diesem Projekt würde ich sehr gerne noch weiterarbeiten. Es war immer mein Wunsch,

Brunos Motivation für die Rettungseinsätze und die Weitergabe seines Wissens muss wohl echter Altruismus sein. Dem hat er sich während seines gesamten Berufslebens gewidmet und bei seinen Zukunftsplänen werden sich diese Projekte sogar noch ausweiten. Wir hatten nach dem Treffen den Eindruck, dass er selbst erlebt hat, wie das eigene Ego, das Streben nach Ruhm oder auch einfach nur die Suche nach Nervenkitzel den Erfolg einer Unternehmung behindern kann. Die Fähigkeit, würdevoll mit Opfern und ihren Angehörigen, die sich oft in schrecklichen Situationen befinden, umzugehen, ist unerlässlich. In der Welt der Bergrettung mit ihren so hohen körperlichen, geistigen und emotionalen Anforderungen sind menschliche Eigenschaften wie Mitgefühl, Empathie, Diskretion und Feingefühl das, worauf es wirklich ankommt.

he Patrouille des Glaciers has become renowned as one of the most challenging races in the world. Its start point is in Zermatt. Every two years (weather conditions permitting), as the ski season draws to a close, the competitors embark on one of the toughest nights of their lives.

It is already dark as they set off up the Bahnhofstrasse. Tomorrow morning they will be in Verbier.

The PDG has its origin in World War II. Swiss military was training a special Brigade to defend mountainous terrain and devised a competition so that the troops could prove they were ready for the challenges ahead.

The first race was held in April 1943. A tragic accident in 1949 when a team fell into a crevasse on the Mont Miné Glacier brought a thirty-year ban. It was eight days before their bodies were recovered. However, memories of this epic race persisted and it was revived in 1983.

We wanted to find out what it’s really like, but not just for the professional athletes who finish the course in mindblowing times. The PDG is open to nonmilitary and to amateurs, though they have to have the broad alpine experience that qualifies them to master unexpected situations under extreme conditions in an inhospitable mountain environment. They have to commit to personal preparation and adequate training to meet the arduous physical, mental and technical requirements of the competition. We talked to Team Lightweight, but we believe that their achievement is anything but lightweight.

These guys are relatively new to the world of ski mountaineering although they have all lived in Zermatt for over ten years. They love the mountains but they hail from England.

Now they work in Zermatt kitchens as chefs. We had the chance to catch up with them the day after they completed the race; adrenaline was still running high.

ie Patrouille des Glaciers ist heutzutage als eines der anspruchsvollsten Rennen der Welt bekannt. Ihr Startort ist Zermatt. Alle zwei Jahre (sofern das Wetter mitspielt), kurz vor Ende der Skisaison, stellen sich die Teilnehmer und Teilnehmerinnen einer der härtesten Nächte ihres Lebens.

Wenn sie in der Bahnhofstrasse an den Start gehen, ist es bereits dunkel. Am nächsten Morgen dann werden sie in Verbier eintreffen.

Entstanden ist die PDG während des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Die Schweizer Armee bildete eine spezielle Brigade zur Verteidigung der Berggebiete aus und ersann ein Wettrennen, bei dem die Truppen ihre Tauglichkeit für die bevorstehenden Herausforderungen unter Beweis stellen konnten. Der erste Wettlauf fand im April 1943 statt. 1949 wurde jedoch nach einem tragischen Unglück ein Verbot verhängt, das erst nach 30 Jahren wieder aufgehoben wurde. Eine Patrouille war in eine Gletscherspalte des MontMiné-Gletschers gestürzt und konnte erst acht Tage später geborgen werden.

nicht gänzlich in Vergessenheit und so kam es 1983 zu einer Neuauflage.

Wir wollten uns selbst ein Bild machen, und zwar nicht nur von den professionellen Athleten, die die Strecke in unfassbaren Zeiten absolvieren. Zur PDG sind nämlich auch Zivilisten und Amateure zugelassen, die aber über ausreichende Alpinerfahrung verfügen müssen, um auch unerwartete Situationen unter extremen Bedingungen in unwirtlichen Gebirgsregionen meistern zu können. Intensive Vorbereitung und adäquates Training sind erforderlich, um die enormen körperlichen, geistigen und technischen Anforderungen des Wettbewerbs zu erfüllen. Wir haben mit dem Team Lightweights gesprochen, die in unseren Augen jedoch alles andere als „Leichtgewichte“ sind.

Diese Jungs sind noch relativ neu in der Welt des Skibergsteigens, leben aber alle schon seit mehr als zehn Jahren in Zermatt. Obwohl sie aus England stammen, lieben sie die Berge. In Zermatt arbeiten sie in verschiedenen Restaurants als Köche. Wir hatten Gelegenheit, am Tag nach dem Rennen mit ihnen zu sprechen, als der Adrenalinspiegel immer noch hoch war.

TEAM LIGHTWEIGHT GLEN PARSONS, OLLIE TOPPLE, STUART (FOGGIE) POINTON What made you guys decide to have a go at this notoriously tough race?

Ollie – He started it. I just wanted to wear a one-piece suit. In lycra.

Glen – For me, after living so long in a ski resort I lost that desire to go up and ski the pistes any more. …. Getting on a bit in my early 30s I realised that fitness doesn’t come free and you’ve got to work towards it. So I started up skinning up the piste and found the reward after a couple of hours was motivating. A race gives you a goal to work towards.

O – There’s nothing like race day.

G – Yes, you just want to better yourself. But at the end of the day, we’re not claiming that that we’re athletes. We are just the general Joe. We love life to the full. We do things fully.

O – It’s the only way we could keep ourselves out of the pub. I didn’t drink very much all winter. That’s part of the goal.

Foggie – And your mid-life crisis It’s a huge commitment, all that training.

Tell us about the preparation.

G – You have to be disciplined. You’ve already done well when you cross the start line, half the battle is over. I think we all approached it in our own ways.

O – I stopped smoking, And to stop smoking I had to stop drinking. They go together.

G – And I err… didn’t. I must admit that every couple of weeks I would relapse because at the end of the day we want to do this alongside having quite a normal life as opposed to becoming a …

O – A boring f***ing recluse, as you called it.

G – We didn’t want to stop being our usual selves.

O – And you just want to get out and enjoy the mountains and be fit and healthy. You gotta stay strong, you gotta stay fit.

What were the challenges of the Race?

Foggie – It’s quite unique when it starts, in the dark. It’s weird starting going up the mountain when you should be getting ready for bed.

G – The race is built around all the patrollers being able to carry their own supplies. Towards the end of one of the passes Ollie had a bit of a turn. At that point I was feeling quite strong.

passed out. One of the medics came over and asked if he wanted to take a break because of the exhaustion and gave him a glass of coke for the sugar. I asked if I could have a glass of coke and she refused because she said I looked fine. They are not allowed to offer support.

And the good bits?

F – How everyone comes together, even at the start line. Hey, we’re running to Verbier!

G – It is a special vibe throughout the whole race.

F – And the organisation was fantastic. They couldn’t have been nicer people. They’d come up to us and say how are you, how are you feeling? They were fantastic.

O – And on our training days we did have a laugh and a giggle.

G – We wanted it to be a fun experience. We’ve all got our own lives outside of this sport, other commitments. This still had to remain fun. Although when you want to achieve something you still have to be serious about it. You have to have that balance.

So now, how do you feel afterwards? What bits hurt?

O – My feet.

F – (holds arms as wide as they will go) From here to here.

G – I suffered from muscle cramps in my thighs early in the race.

Perhaps dehydration.

F – Tired. I slept for 14 hours last night.

O – I feel f***ing ging gang goolied.

It looks like a challenge where the teamwork, during the training as well as the race itself, is paramount.

G – None of us expected this race to be easy and you deal with the cards that you’re dealt at the time. The last thing you want to do is quit. And the roles reversed during the race and we each had a time of pushing the others on. Ollie did the first half.

O – Well Foggie didn’t feel very well at the Tête Blanche. Quite cold.

G – Two of us struggled there. I had a cold the day before and Foggie had had chest problems all month.

F – Just before Arolla I was done. I felt terrible. I had bronchitis a while ago and being at altitude exacerbated it in a big way. I had a feeling of terror, breathing and not being able to get enough air in.

And Glen wasn’t feeling good at all. We were both throwing our dummies out. It was down to Ollie.

G – As we dropped down from the highest point, one of us thank goodness was feeling strong. Ollie pulled us along for a couple of hours of the race. That moral support pushed us along.

O – Talking about – you’re going to be on holidays soon, boys.

Telling them to get up and get going. If the old bloke can do it…

G – Then Ollie felt bad after about ¾ of the way through. I guess his reserves were drained. I had a stronger last third of the race.

The roles reversed in a way and I found myself supporting other parts of the team.

F – I didn’t have a turn.

O – Foggie dragged us up to Stafelalp.

G – I think as a unit none of us let ourselves down and it switched around. If one was strong the others were weak. It balanced itself out. And I couldn’t have climbed those cols much quicker anyway.

Our goal was just to achieve the PDG, to get to the finish line.

Of course we had an aim of around 12 hours and we achieved that.

But you never actually train for that long. It just shows how the 3 of you together, the team effort, counts for a lot.

Would you do it again?

G – Sure, I love it.

O – No comment.

F – Even if I was feeling fit, and I wasn’t completely, I would still say that was a very hard race. That was tough. The combination of the walking up and the changing to skiing and the skiing wasn’t a piece of cake. Fresh snow churned up to pieces. And the lack of sleep.

as Sommerferienlager hat mir einige meiner schönsten Erinnerungen beschert: all die Freunde, die Aktivitäten, das Essen und vor allem zu lernen, ich selbst zu sein, weit weg von der Familie und dem vertrauten heimischen Umfeld...

ross-country Mountain biking has grown considerably in Zermatt over the past fifteen years. Following some initial scepticism from the powers behind the infrastructure, bikers are now welcomed. The result – a destination that could be described as a little bit of paradise for bikers of all levels. There are locals for whom it is their playground, and there are visitors who discover the terrain that their wheeled steeds were made for. The ground includes some stretches of double-track, but much is perfect to devotees of the single-track seeking a wide variety of challenges.

As well as technical rocky descents there are kilometres of rolling trails, wide-open flowy mountain plains, plenty of switchbacks and shady wooded paths.

If you’re passing through Zermatt and decide to swap boots for wheels one day, there are plenty of places to hire a bike. Do watch out if you come from the UK – you might be taken by surprise to find the brakes and the gears the other way round. But to learn more about what Zermatt offers the keen rider, we went to someone in the know. Jeff Michel has been running guided mountain bike holidays for ten years and has seen and been part of the development of the sport.

‘When we started, and we spoke to the lift company, biking was considered worse than terrorism. We had to play it very carefully.’

Now, however, the summer lift operators welcome riders and their bikes. Clearly, this is a sound economic decision. Not only does the presence of bikes increase traffic on the lifts but they keep Zermatt’s Zermatt Times

core clientele rejuvenated. These are active people who often end up then choosing Zermatt for a winter ski trip – there is something fascinating to see a trail you have ridden in summer cloaked in snow and transformed into a ski piste.

So Zermatt has embraced cross-country biking. Trails are well maintained. Hotels and apartment buildings are becoming more bike friendly, with secure storage and bike hosing facilities. Mountain restaurants greet hungry mountain bikers with open arms. Some even provide little triangular things with hooks so you can hook your bike up while you go for a coffee rather than leaving it lying on the ground. Because they cover more ground more quickly, the bikers can reach some of the more remote hostelleries at times of day out of reach of the hikers.

As with the skiing, Zermatt can’t be described as the easiest terrain to master on a bike. However, also as with the skiing, if you’re with someone who knows their way around the experience for any level of rider can be among the best you will find. This is where a trip with a company like Jeff’s comes in. There is such a wealth of opportunity that being in the company of a guide means that you won’t miss out on the top trails, and you benefit from local knowledge about the time of day to hit them. You get warned when the track gets exposed around the next switchback and, if you haven’t encountered them before, you get instruction in the technique for the rain-bars that cross many of the trails to stop them from washing away – ‘And it’s a special technique to ride over these things, because if you hit them straight on you can end up with a head plant.’

Another valuable nugget of local know-how that can enhance the fun of the ride is to do with timing. Bikers and hikers share many sections of trails. But the different pace at which legs and wheels travel means that, with a bit of forethought, it’s possible to minimise encounters. It has to be admitted that walkers can be wary of hardhatted riders hurtling down their paths. As a destination that has attracted mountain walkers for many years, Zermatt did need to exercise caution to ensure that this important clientele continued to enjoy the glorious experience of exploring its hiking trails. You don’t want them put off by hoards of riders, glorying in speed. It’s all about mutual respect and tolerance.

That bit of caution also plays a role in ensuring the sensitive development of the natural attractions a destination like Zermatt offers. If you over develop, you risk losing the special features that drew people in the first place. I ask Jeff about the future of the sport in Zermatt, – ‘It will continue to grow but in a sensible way, a contained level. It’s not like the Portes du Soleil for example, where on the French side they really don’t take so much care of the mountains. If one trail is worn out they just put another one in there just to the right of it. Here we’re very conscious of nature and the mountains. Protecting the wildlife.’

So yes, cross-country mountain biking is a bit of a hybrid. It is a technically and physically demanding sport that provides thrills, not too many spills you hope, and excitement. It’s also about the opportunity to explore huge swathes of magnificent and very beautiful mountainous terrain. So it’s well worth slowing down sometimes, even stopping, to take a look around you.

uerfeldein-Mountainbiking hat in den letzten 15 Jahren in Zermatt deutlich an Popularität hinzugewonnen. Bestand seitens der Infrastrukturbetreiber anfangs noch etwas Skepsis, sind Velofahrer nun herzlich willkommen. Das Ergebnis ist ein Reiseziel, das man als ein kleines Paradies für Radsportler jeden Niveaus bezeichnen könnte. So manchem Ortsansässigen dient das Gebiet als Spielplatz und auch Besucher werden feststellen, dass ihr Drahtesel genau für dieses Gelände geschaffen wurde. Das Areal bietet einige DoubletrailStrecken, doch vor allem für Liebhaber von Singletrails finden sich hier zahlreiche Herausforderungen. Neben technisch anspruchsvollen felsigen Abfahrten gibt es kilometerlange hügelige Strecken, weite, sanft fliessende Hochebenen, zahlreiche Serpentinen und schattige Waldwege.

Sollten Sie einmal in Zermatt Station machen und die Wanderschuhe gegen ein Velo eintauschen wollen, gibt es genügend Mietangebote für Fahrräder. Gäste aus Grossbritannien sollten jedoch aufpassen – Bremse und Schaltung sind hier andersherum montiert als gewohnt. Wir wollten jedoch ganz genau wissen, was Zermatt passionierten Velofahrern zu bieten hat, und so trafen wir uns mit jemandem, der sich auskennt. Jeff Michel bietet seit zehn Jahren geführte Mountainbike-Ferien an und hat die Entwicklung des Sports nicht nur beobachtet, sondern auch mitgetragen. „Als wir ganz am Anfang mit dem Liftunternehmen sprachen, hielt man Biking noch für schlimmer als Terrorismus. Wir mussten uns sehr geschickt verhalten.“ Inzwischen sind Radler mit ihren Gefährten bei den Liftbetreibern gern gesehene Gäste. Zweifellos ist das aus wirtschaftlicher Sicht eine kluge Entscheidung. Mit den Rädern steigt nicht nur die Auslastung der Lifte, sie sorgen auch dafür, dass die Stammklientele jung bleibt.

Dabei handelt es sich um aktive Menschen, die oft im Winter zum Skifahren nach Zermatt zurückkehren – eine Strecke, die man im Sommer befahren hat, als schneebedeckte Skipiste wiederzusehen, hat einen besonderen Reiz.

Zermatt hat sich mit dem Mountainbiking angefreundet.

Die Strecken werden gut gepflegt. Hotels und Ferienwohnungen werden velofreundlicher und bieten z. B. Möglichkeiten zum sicheren Abstellen und zum Abspritzen der Räder. Bergrestaurants empfangen hungrige Mountainbiker mit offenen Armen. Bei einigen finden sich sogar kleine dreieckige Gestelle mit Haken, an denen man sein Fahrrad aufhängen kann, anstatt es auf den Boden zu legen, während man sich einen Kaffee genehmigt. Da die Radfahrer weitere Strecken in kürzerer Zeit zurücklegen können, erreichen sie auch entlegenere Wirtshäuser zu Tageszeiten, die für Wanderer nicht zu schaffen sind.

Ebenso wie beim Skifahren ist Zermatt auch mit dem Velo kein leicht zu meisterndes Terrain. Doch wie auf Skiern gilt: Mit einem Gefährten, der sich auskennt, bieten sich Fahrern jedes Niveaus

Erlebnisse, die ihresgleichen suchen. Da bietet sich eine Tour mit einem Begleiter wie Jeff an. Bei all den zahlreichen Möglichkeiten sorgt die Begleitung durch einen Führer dafür, dass einem keine der Topstrecken entgeht, und man profitiert auch noch von dem Wissen des Ortskundigen, zu welcher Tageszeit sie am schönsten sind. Er warnt Sie vor, wenn die Strecke hinter der nächsten Biegung plötzlich exponiert ist, und weist Sie in die richtige Technik für die Regenrinnen, die als Erosionsschutz viele der Wege kreuzen, ein, falls Sie diese noch nicht kennen sollten. „Für diese Dinger braucht man schon eine spezielle Technik, denn wenn man sie genau frontal erwischt, kann man schnell mal auf dem Kopf landen.“ Ein weiterer wertvoller Tipp des Einheimischen, der für noch mehr Freude beim Fahren sorgt, hat mit dem richtigen Timing zu tun. Radfahrer und Wanderer nutzen viele Streckenabschnitte gemeinsam. Durch die unterschiedliche Reisegeschwindigkeit von Füssen und Rädern lassen sich mit ein wenig Voraussicht Begegnungen vermeiden. Die Fussgänger können nämlich den behelmten Radlern, die die Pfade nur so hinuntersausen, schon mal mit etwas Argwohn begegnen. Als Reiseziel, das seit vielen Jahren Bergwanderer anzieht, musste Zermatt gewährleisten, dass diese wichtige Kundschaft auch weiterhin Freude an der Erkundung der hiesigen Wanderwege, die so ein wunderbares Erlebnis ist,

hat. Keinesfalls sollen sie durch Horden von Radfahrern, die sich dem Rausch der Geschwindigkeit hingeben, vertrieben werden.

Gegenseitige Toleranz und Rücksichtnahme sind oberstes Gebot.

Ebendiese Umsicht spielt auch für die sorgsame Entwicklung der Naturattraktionen, die ein Ort wie Zermatt zu bieten hat, eine wichtige Rolle. Eine Überentwicklung birgt das Risiko, dass die Besonderheiten, wegen derer die Touristen ursprünglich kamen, verlorengehen. Ich frage Jeff nach der Zukunft des Sports in Zermatt. „Er wird weiter an Popularität zunehmen, aber mit Verstand und in Massen. Es ist hier nicht wie beispielsweise in Portes du Soleil, wo sie auf der französischen Seite nicht so viel Rücksicht auf die Berge nehmen. Ist ein Weg ausgefahren, wird einfach rechts daneben ein neuer angelegt.

Wir achten hier sehr auf die Natur und die Berge und schützen die Flora und Fauna.“ Das Querfeldein-Mountainbiking nimmt also eher eine Art Zwischenstellung ein. Es ist ein technisch und körperlich anspruchsvoller Sport, der Spass und Nervenkitzel bringt (ohne hoffentlich zu nervenaufreibend zu sein), und bietet darüber hinaus Gelegenheit, die atemberaubende, wunderschöne Bergwelt weiträumig zu erkunden. Es lohnt sich also, ab und zu mal einen Gang herunterzuschalten oder auch anzuhalten, um sich in Ruhe umzuschauen.

Oh, Deer! Or is it a Goat?

Nearly extinct from most areas by the beginning of 19th century because of over hunting, the Alpine Ibex was reintroduced to parts of the Gran Paradiso National Park in 1856. They now have a herd of over 7000. It is likely that the Ibex here in Zermatt are descendants of their Italian relatives.

These incredible pictures show Ibex goats wandering across the face of the near-vertical Cingino dam in Northern Italy without a care in the world.

The gravity-defying goats typically live on very steep and rocky terrain at altitudes of up to 3500m. They have no fear of falling. And they aren’t doing it just to show off. It is thought the goats are licking the stones for their salts.

A magnificent beast, the male weighs up to 80 kg. Both sexes carry impressive backward curving horns, marked by ridges, called knots. The rams’ horns grow at a rate of two ridges per year, up to about a metre long.

An example of just how curious chamois are: recently one was photographed peering through the office window at the busy heliport of Air Zermatt.

Chamois have short horns, which hook backwards at the tip. They live in packs, especially in the wintertime. Powerful rams, weighing up to about 35 kilos, are considerably smaller than the Ibex.

They indulge in fights, pursuing each other in wild chases, during the rutting season from November to December.

Chamois usually use speed and stealthy evasion to escape predators and can run at 50 kilometres per hour and can jump 2m vertically into the air or over a distance of 6m.

The chamois is a popular game animal in Europe, highly prized for the taste of its meat. The hide produces a soft cloth colloquially known as ‘shammy leather’.

1856 wurde der Alpensteinbock, der zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts in den meisten Gegenden aufgrund von Überjagung so gut wie ausgestorben war, in Teilen des Nationalparks Gran Paradiso wieder angesiedelt. Inzwischen umfasst die dortige Herde mehr als 7000 Tiere.

Es ist anzunehmen, dass die hier in Zermatt beheimateten Steinböcke Nachfahren ihrer italienischen Artgenossen sind.

Diese unglaublichen Bilder zeigen Steinböcke, die seelenruhig über die nahezu senkrechte Vorderseite des norditalienischen CinginoStaudammes spazieren.

Die von der Schwerkraft wenig beeindruckten Ziegen leben in sehr steilen, felsigen Gebieten in Höhen von bis zu 3500 m. Sie sind völlig schwindelfrei und vollbringen dieses Kunststückchen nicht nur, um anzugeben. Es wird angenommen, dass sie die Steine ablecken, um die darin enthaltenen Mineralsalze aufzunehmen.

Die Böcke besitzen mit einem Körpergewicht von bis zu 80 kg eine beachtliche Statur und sowohl Böcke als auch Geissen tragen ein imposantes, nach hinten gebogenes Gehörn mit ausgeprägten Wülsten, die auch als Knoten bezeichnet werden. Die Hörner des Männchens bilden jedes Jahr zwei neue Wülste aus und werden bis zu einem Meter lang.

Ein Beispiel, das zeigt, wie neugierig Gämsen sind: Kürzlich wurde eines der Tiere dabei fotografiert, wie es durch das Bürofenster am verkehrsreichen Heliport von Air Zermatt lugte.

Gämsen haben kurze Hörner, die an der Spitze rückwärts gebogen sind. Sie leben in Herden, besonders in den Wintermonaten. Selbst kräftige Böcke, die bis zu 35 kg wiegen können, sind deutlich kleiner als Steinböcke.

Während der Brunftzeit von November bis Dezember sind sie kampfeslustig und scheuchen einander in wilden Verfolgungsjagden umher.

Gämsen nutzen ihre Schnelligkeit und eine gute Tarnung, um ihren Feinden zu entkommen. Beim Rennen erreichen sie Geschwindigkeiten von bis zu 50 km/h und sie sind in der Lage, 2 m hoch bzw. 6 m weit zu springen.

In Europa ist die Gämse ein beliebtes Jagdwild, das vor allem wegen des guten Geschmacks seines Fleisches geschätzt wird. Die Decke gibt ein weiches Leder, das auch als Sämisch- oder Chamoisleder bekannt ist.

In September to October, the mountains echo with the calls of the great red deer stags. They are audible at daybreak, especially between Täsch and Randa. During the six weeks of the rut, the stags compete for the chance to father next year’s calves before the seasons change and winter comes to the mountains. Snow, cold, and hunger will claim their share of the herd before spring. Many deer find it hard to feed and finding shelter takes all the energy they have. But when spring once again appears, the red deer mothers and their calves make their way up to the high mountain pastures.

Antlers are shed in February and March and then grow until July at a rate of 2.5 cm a day.

A male red deer can weigh up to 240 kg!

Venison is both flavourful and nutritious.

Made world famous by Walt Disney as the character Bambi.

There’s a large roe deer population in Zermatt. They stay mainly in the forest. Quick, shy and graceful, they feed mainly on grass, leaves, berries and young shoots. They particularly like tender grass, especially when it has rained the day before. Males can weigh up to around 23 kg, females 20. When alarmed, they bark much like a dog and flash the white patch on their rump.

The fawns are born between May and June, mostly as twins, and remain hidden in long grass from predators until they are ready to join the rest of the herd. They are suckled by their mothers several times a day for around three months. Roe deer adults will often abandon their young if they sense or smell that an animal or human has been near it. So if you find one, don’t touch it.

Von September bis Oktober hallen die Rufe der grossen Rothirschbullen durch das Gebirge. Bei Tagesanbruch sind sie vor allem zwischen Täsch und Randa gut zu hören. Während der sechswöchigen Brunftzeit kämpfen die Bullen darum, wer den nächstjährigen Nachwuchs zeugen darf, ehe die Jahreszeit wechselt und der Winter im Gebirge Einzug hält.

Schnee, Kälte und Hunger werden bis zum Frühjahr ihren Tribut von der Herde fordern. Viele Hirsche werden nur schwer Nahrung finden und das Aufsuchen der Wintereinstände zehrt an ihren Kräften. Doch wenn es wieder Frühling wird, machen sich die Muttertiere mit ihren Kälbern auf den Weg zu den Hochgebirgsalmen.

Im Februar und März werfen die Hirsche ihr Geweih ab und bilden anschliessend bis zum Juli ein neues aus, das täglich um 2,5 cm wächst.

Das Hirschfleisch ist sowohl aromatisch als auch nahrhaft.

Weltberühmt wurde das Reh durch Walt Disney und seine Zeichentrickfigur Bambi.

In Zermatt gibt es eine grosse Rehpopulation, die jedoch meist im Wald verborgen bleibt. Die flinken, schreckhaften und anmutigen Tiere ernähren sich hauptsächlich von Gräsern, Blättern, Beeren und jungen Trieben. Eine besondere Vorliebe hegen sie für zartes Gras, vor allem wenn es am Tag zuvor geregnet hat. Die Rehböcke wiegen bis zu ca. 23 kg, die Ricken etwa 20 kg. Werden die Tiere beunruhigt, geben sie Belllaute von sich, die denen eines Hundes ganz ähnlich sind, und zeigen die weissen Haare ihres Spiegels.

Die Kitze werden zwischen Mai und Juni geboren, meist als Zwillinge, und verbleiben geschützt vor Fressfeinden in der Deckung im hohen Gras, bis sie alt genug sind, um zum Rest der Sippe zu stossen. Etwa drei Monate lang werden sie von ihren Müttern mehrmals am Tag gesäugt.

Die Elterntiere verlassen häufig ihre Jungen, wenn sie riechen oder wittern, dass es einem anderen Tier oder einem Menschen zu nahe gekommen ist.

YOU MIGHT SEE JOE ON THE STREET, wheeling his small suitcase of camera equipment behind him. A fixture in Zermatt, he has created a niche for himself in interior photography. Joe first visited Zermatt on an inter-rail holiday whilst at Photography College. He liked it so much that when he finished his study he came back to find a job. A keen skier and mountain biker, Joe loves all the things Zermatt has to offer. This year will mark his 24th year of living here.

Joe kam während seines Fotografiestudiums auf einem Interrail-Urlaub zum ersten Mal nach Zermatt. Hier gefiel es ihm so gut, dass er nach seinem Abschluss zurückkehrte, um sich einen Job zu suchen.

You are well known for your interior and event photography. Is this what you believe you’re best at?

Sie sind für Ihre Interieur- und Eventfotografien bekannt. Sind das Ihrer Meinung nach auch Ihre Stärken?

Interior photography is what I enjoy the most. Covering events is lots of fun but I could not do it on a permanent basis. It’s pretty tiring.

Have you photographed any celebrities, if so whom?

Living in Zermatt you see celebrities on a weekly basis. I have always been a people watcher, it comes under free entertainment.

Celebrities are interesting to photograph. There is so much research you can do so you really feel you know them before you even meet them. It gives an unusual angle to a portrait.

Tell us about your first paid assignment It was for a newspaper. I had taken a photo they were interested in. They told me it would be on the front cover with my name on it. They offered me two rolls of film for the negs!

I thanked them for the film and told them they would have to pay the full cover rate if they put my photo on the cover. I took the negative back. This industry is full of bandits.

Wenn man in Zermatt lebt, sieht man jede Woche irgendwelche Prominenten. Ich habe schon immer gerne Menschen beobachtet, das ist quasi ein kostenloses Unterhaltungsprogramm.

Berühmtheiten zu fotografieren, ist interessant. Man kann vorher ausführlich recherchieren und hat dann das Gefühl, sie bereits zu kennen, obwohl man ihnen noch nie begegnet ist. Das gibt einem Porträt etwas ganz Besonderes.

What was your most memorable assignment in your early career?

At the end of the first session I was asked to stay and cover the next two days. Until that point I had only seen Presidents and Prime Ministers on TV. I was even invited for the dinner party at the end of the conference. Now one of my favourite events is the Zermatt Summit.

If you could have lunch with someone famous who would it be?

There are lots of people I would like to sit down and talk to, moreover I’d love to watch them work. I’d have loved to see Vincent Van Gogh paint Starry Night.

What is the first thing you would do if you won the lottery?

I’d do everything anyone told me I could never do. And I’d buy myself a really nice Bultaco Sherpa 199A (classic trails bike).

Ministertreffen der Europäischen Freihandelsassoziation (EFTA) im Jahr 1995. Als die erste Sitzung vorbei war, wurde ich gebeten, zu bleiben und auch die nächsten beiden Tage zu dokumentieren. Bis dahin kannte ich Präsidenten und Premierminister nur aus dem Fernsehen. Ich wurde sogar zum Diner am Ende der Konferenz eingeladen. Inzwischen ist der Zermatt Summit mein Lieblingsereignis.

Wenn Sie mit einer berühmten Persönlichkeit Ihrer Wahl zu Mittag essen könnten, wer wäre das?

Es gibt viele Leute, mit denen ich mich gerne mal ausführlich unterhalten würde, aber vor allem würde ich sie gerne bei ihrer Arbeit beobachten. Ich hätte wahnsinnig gerne zugesehen, als Vincent Van Gogh die Sternennacht gemalt hat.

Was würden Sie als erstes tun, wenn Sie im Lotto gewinnen würden?

Ich würde alles machen, von dem mir irgendwann mal jemand gesagt hat, ich würde es niemals tun können. Und ich würde mir eine richtig schöne Bultaco Sherpa 199A (ein OldtimerMotorrad) kaufen.

Summer Hikes Our mountain village is surrounded by spectacular terrain that is crisscrossed by a network of well-maintained walking paths. This is an activity that requires little sophisticated (or costly) equipment. Slide your feet into a pair of sturdy, and, importantly, comfortable boots.

Sling a daypack onto your back. Make sure you have the essentials – water, sun cream, various layers of clothing. And off you go.

This is not a detailed pathfinder. We just want to share with you a few of our favourites, and give you a feel for what we love about them.

Höhenweg Höhbalmen – A big adventure day in the big mountains Depending how fast your feet will carry you, this hike takes between five and seven hours. It’s 18 k in total, and incorporates a good climb up to glorious high meadows and a long descent with fascinating views of the Zmutt glacier.

You start by heading to Restaurant Edelweiss (go straight up the alley next to Gee’s on the Bahnhofstrasse). The path climbs quickly out of town and then you’re crossing pastures spangled with wild flowers before the entering the cool shade of the forest. It’s steep up to the little hostel that gazes down on the town from its rocky outcrop. You’ve only done just over half an hour, but maybe time for a quick coffee stop.

After Edelweiss, a steep but delightful path continues up the cleft of the V-shaped valley along a tumbling stream. This opens out onto a lush meadow where the Hotel du Trift nestles. There is something especially tranquil about Trift, perhaps because of the absence of ski lifts up this side. The pretty Trift hotel might be your stop for refreshments but don’t linger long – you have many hours of mountain terrain far away from amenities.

Several paths continue in different directions from Trift. There are some exciting hikes up towards the peaks and glaciers in front of you but you’re going to bear left over the little stream. It’s a slowly progressive ascent as the path zigzags its way up the hill. The views open out magnificently in front of you and the marmots are calling warnings to each other in front of their holes. Then the path seems to flatten, although the high point is still a while off, and there is a growing feeling of empty space. wayside and mountain streams to ford as the path reaches its highpoint at 2,740m. It looks as though you might fall off the edge of the world.

Then the descent begins, gently at first, but there are times when it is pretty steep. The grassland gives way to rocks and scree. The path, at times narrow, clings to the side of a precipitous slope. It feels that the track just keeps going further and further away from Zermatt, as the view towards the Zmutt glacier begins to take shape. At last, however, it does wend its way downwards in a series of zigzags. The thunder of a spectacular waterfall greets you as you descend and you pass close by its cascade over the rocks.

Then small trees start to push their way through the rocky ground and thicken into a magical fairy wood almost down to the stream. You meet the way here going right for the hikers who are heading up for an overnight stay at the Schönbiel Hutte, but to return towards Zermatt you stay left.

Having reached the stream, it’s encouraging to think that all the uphill work has been done, but last year, summer 2013, the path made an extra climb to get round and over the blockage of a huge rock fall. As yet, we don’t know if this will still be the route in 2014. But then it’s all gentle descents back to Zermatt.

The flower strewn alpine meadows feel warm and welcoming after the heights of the Höhbalmen. The path takes you past the quaint hamlet of Kalbermatten and you’ll catch sight of the radiant turquoise water of the holding reservoir for the pumping station below Zmutt. Not much more than half an hour later you come to the hamlet. If the evening sun still shines this is a lovely place to enjoy a cool drink. You deserve to celebrate the accomplishment of a high mountain hike before the pleasant return to the village.

Furi – Schwarzsee – Zermatt – Medium hike for a fun lunch On a glorious summer afternoon, what better than to enjoy lunch on a terrace spectacularly situated just beneath the Matterhorn entertained by live music? It’s even better if you have earned it by using your feet to reach that terrace and have the prospect of a delightful ramble down sunny slopes to help post-lunch digestion. This excursion has everything – steep paths through cool forest, high mountain pastures, and a pretty descent via easy tracks. The hike up to Schwarzsee takes about two hours, and then the descent back to Zermatt is easily done in two hours and less if you’re fast.

We start at Furi. Maybe you have walked up the road from Winkelmatten, or taken the more direct path via Blatten. You might even ride the gondola and begin walking after Furi. No matter. There are plenty of vertical metres ahead.

From the lift station at Furi walk up past the Furri restaurant and then take the path to the left towards the Aroleid restaurant.

You wind through a collection of old stadels and a little chapel.

Keep straight on when another path signposted towards Furgg turns left. Then things start to get steep. On a sunny morning you appreciate the shade of the larch wood. The restaurant of Hermetje huddles into the slope among the trees. This is the last refreshment stop before you reach Schwarzsee but beware – you are not yet half way to the top.

As you reach the tree line the path does long zigzags up the hillside. After a while, you leave behind the soft gentle feeling of the lower part of this walk and the vista opens up all around you. The air cools as you follow the track over a rolling landscape, still climbing. The only thing that mars a little the intense peace is the rumble/clack of the gondola that dangles sometimes quite close. Gondola access does mean that this is a walk eminently suitable if you have friends and family you want to share lunch with but for whom the hike up would be off-putting.

At last a building appears on the horizon. Your destination.

The terrace at Schwarzsee has a very special view, up close to the Matterhorn and the lake guarded by the chapel dedicated to Mary of the Snow. Enjoy your rest, eat well – the homewards stroll might be downhill but it does cover some distance.

You leave the restaurant along a wide track that serves as a ski piste in the winter. Then follow the signpost left to Stafelalp.

Here the path undulates its way across grass and scree. Then, when you see a bench well positioned for a spectacular view of the mountain, your walking path turns off the track and down the hill, alongside a stream. There is a sort of water collecting area that can make things a bit damp underfoot for a while.

Even the path itself sometimes seems to be like a streambed.

The descent becomes a little more wooded and then opens out to the reveal the Stafelalp restaurant, another inviting terrace on which to pass some sunny hours. The inside is also welcoming so it’s a good choice when the weather is not smiling on you.

From Stafelalp the walking path drops left down the hill to the sleepy hamlet of Biel. Then you meet the road, which is asphalt all the way to Furi, perhaps a little monotonous and hard on the feet. There is, however, plenty to look at and promise yourself to research (by reading future issues of the Zermatt Times!). You will spot the industrial cable cars that operate for the Grand Dixence water installations. To extend the walk and reduce the asphalt, there is a turn off to the dam where the road tunnels briefly under the rock. Walking over the dam wall is a dizzying experience and the path that climbs up other side of the gorge connects with the track that meanders down to Zermatt via Zmutt.

Winkelmatten to Findeln – A classic walk... with a variation The path that wends its way through the woods up to the hamlet of Findeln is a Zermatt classic. It takes not much over an hour but all up hill so it’s a rewarding way to reach the restaurants and other delights dotted across the sun-blessed meadows below Sunnegga. Here we start up the better-known route, but then divert onto a path less trodden. It’s a little more challenging, but fun. This makes it a good tramp if you’re accompanied by children, assuming they are quite energetic and under your control!

Starting by the church in Winkelmatten, take the road that leads in the direction of the line of the Gornergrat railway with chalets on both sides. Then the road becomes a path that bears left and you have the spectacular sight of the waterfall that crashes down the gorge traversed by the viaduct above. You Zermatt Times

cross over the railway tracks and continue along the path that heads up into the forest (not the one that bears left to follow the train line).

Follow the zigzags up through the forest. When you reach 1880m there is a turning to the left, shortly before a stadel. You can see that the main track leads straight on along the side of the valley. It is a lovely walk above the Findelnbach but we’re going to take the left turn, signposted to Wildi and Sunnegga, for the fun of it.

This path has some challenging sections and it’s steeper and narrower than the one you have left. The climb up a series of short curves is quite exhilarating. It’s a beautiful forest, however, of spaced trees both deciduous and evergreen. It gets really fun when you walk right underneath one of the high voltage cable pylons and you will see that the path actually straddles a ridge. After the pylon, it becomes more obvious that you’re walking along a ridge with quite breath-taking drops over jutting out rocks. It is not vertigo inducing, however, the path feels wide and secure enough – as long as those children take heed of your warnings to stick to it.

There is another short steep section among larch trees which then flattens and opens out into an enchanting glade. It’s a special place to sit on the warm grass and watch the colourful butterflies that visit the flowers growing in the dappled light.

After this peaceful sanctuary, the trees start to thin out and then you emerge from their shade a little above the Restaurant Adler. Maybe you’re heading for lunch in one of the Findeln restaurants. But an alternative destination might be the shores of the Leisee. It is clearly signposted and when you get there it’s lovely to unpack your picnic, laze on the banks and have a splash in the refreshing water of the lake.

Alpine Treasures The Swiss Alps have long been famed for their treasure troves of beautiful crystals. The inaccessible terrain has enabled crystals to grow undisturbed in favourable conditions for 10 to 20 million years. This is very young on the geological scale but we can find some truly spectacular crystals in and around Zermatt.

The pleasure in the expectation of finding a precious stone or crystal in the earth is instinctive to being human. Explore Findeln or Gornergrat and with a lot of luck you might find a piece of Garnet or Epidot. But the bigger crystals and minerals are in the hard to reach areas, you need expertise to find them.

Strahler Werner Schmidt

T

he Swiss have a particular name for a crystal gatherer, a “Strahler”. It derives from the word locals use to describe a nice crystal, ‘ein schönes Strahl’. Strahl in German means something that omits a positive radiance or energy. A man who finds crystals becomes known as a ‘Strahler.’

A Strahler searching for crystals often has a ‘feeling’ where to find these gifts of nature. Some say they are attracted to the vibration of the mineral, others don’t know why they find them but the quest intrigues. Crystal gatherers search the cliffs and mountain faces at much personal risk, and are often led to dusty cavities by tracing narrow veins of quartz on the mountain-side.

Herr Alfred Kronig is a local Zermatter who in his youth used to Strahl. I spent some time in his little Mineralstübli Olympia, 22 Hofmattstrasse, chatting to him. His fascination with searching for minerals began as a young boy with his brother German. Their big find was a 25kg piece of stunning Lazulite.

Here is his story – A long time ago a local man, Herr Taugwalder, found a piece of blue stone on the Stockhorn glacier opposite the Monterosa hut. Alfred and his brother knew that there must be a vein of it somewhere. They wanted to find it. Together they walked from Gornergrat to Stockhorn early in the morning, there was no cable car in those days. They searched and dug up to four meters deep with a small axe everyday. Sure enough, weeks later on Hohtälli, 150 meters above the original find, they found the mother stone.

It has a delicate light blue colour, unlike the deep blue Lapis of Afghanistan that you see more often in jewelry. This stone, pictured on the next page, is what remains after it has been cut many times to make the jewelry you can find in his shop.

Alfred is quick to tell me that there is no more left. After he and his brother found the mother stone, Gornergrat railway workers came looking for the vein but used explosives and blasted it all into the air.

Mr Kronig is a Gentleman of the old school. He and his brother would only take stones that they themselves had searched for and dug up by hand, never with explosives. At age 86 he tells me how he forgets things but when talking about his minerals his memory is clear as a bell, as it is when he recalls competing in the Olympics. In Oslo 1952 he received a silver medal for Biathlon (Cross country with shooting).

He laughs, ‘I shot the wrong target otherwise I would have got the Gold but such is sport.’ In Cortina in 1956 he placed 24th for the same discipline. I asked him where he trained for cross country skiing as Zermatt is not very flat. He recalls the route he regularly took for training.

He would run from town (Steinmatten) up to Fluhalp, behind Fluhalp to the Rimpfishorn, down the Pfulwe valley to Täschalp, down to Täsch and back up to Zermatt, all by foot. His time: 2hrs 44mins An amazing gentleman indeed!

Someone else who knows about crystals is Marina Lorenz. She buys from local Strahlers. Her shop, Kristallgeheimnis, is nestled behind the wooden houses just off the church square in an alley dating back to the 16th century. An Aladdin’s cave of stones, crystals and her handmade jewelry, it has a special ‘Strahl’ and attracts anyone who might stray from the main square.

her with much of the mountain crystal. A Strahler in the Aletsch area supplies smoked quartz. Marina collects her own garnet, epidot, smaractit and serpentine from around Täschalp, Fluhalp and Gornergrat.

She explains how Strahlers climb cliffs and wedge themselves into small fissures on their backs where they can hardly move. It’s a dangerous job. Toxic gasses are sometimes released into these fissures in the rock. If these gasses are inhaled it is easy for the Strahler who is lying down in this cramped space to fall asleep and never wake up. This is the main reason why there is a law that a Strahler should never go on a search alone.

Most of these guys don’t believe in the healing energy of the crystals. They have another kind of respect for them, it’s almost like they can sniff them out of the earth.

Sadly, in Wallis, there are still people who use dynamite.

Marina is very against this and never knowingly buys a stone from anyone who excavates in this way. She can tell if a stone has been blasted from the slight damage an explosion is bound to cause. This is why you might find stones for half the price but they are more than likely collected using dynamite.

‘This is the moral choice of the consumer,’ she emphasises.

Marina has been spellbound by crystals and minerals for 33 years, she feels their resonance.

‘When people ask me if I believe in the energy of crystals. I say, no, I’m sure of it.’

However it was not easy when she set up the shop here in Zermatt 17 years ago. There was suspicion, mainly from the elder generation of Catholics. To believe in the power of something other than God was heresy. There are still some locals who are a bit wary but she says the younger generation are much more open. ‘They have a feeling that crystals have energy, even if it’s just that they give pleasure by their beauty and resonance.’

If someone comes into your shop to buy a piece as a gift, how could you help?

‘I tell them to wander around the shop and if there is any stone that they have a special feeling for, no matter in what form, to pick it out. Then I describe the function of this particular stone.’

Marina touches my arm and looks me in the eye.

‘I can tell you honestly that 99% of the time the function of the stone rings true with them.’

Marina has a water jug on the table with three crystals in it. It looks really pretty, I ask her what it’s for.

‘Crystal in water is an elixir and is very easy to do’, she tells me.

‘A particularly good combination is rose quartz to calm and bring harmony, amethyst for spirituality and bergkristall for clarity, purity and strength.’

She believes passionately in the healing properties of crystals.

Alfred Kronig, on the other hand, was a Strahler searching out the crystals in the earth, motivated by the thrill of the hunt and the challenge to find the perfect mineral. He’s a collector.

Nevertheless, I noticed he also had a piece of rose quartz in his water.

Now, in the jug of water on my kitchen table I have placed a rose quartz, an amethyst and a little bergkristall. If nothing else, the novelty of this seems to be helping my family drink more water. Perhaps this is exactly how the energy of the crystal works.

Alpine Schätze Die Schweizer Alpen sind schon lange berühmt als Fundgrube für wunderschöne Kristalle. In dem unzugänglichen Gebiet konnten sie 10 bis 20 Millionen Jahre lang ungestört unter besten Bedingungen wachsen. Aus geologischer Sicht sind sie damit zwar noch sehr jung, in und um Zermatt lassen sich aber einige wirklich atemberaubende Stücke finden.

Die Vorfreude auf die Entdeckung eines Edelsteins oder Kristalls in der Erde wohnt dem Menschen instinktiv inne. Wenn Sie Findeln oder Gornergrat aufmerksam durchstreifen, könnten Sie mit viel Glück sogar ein Stückchen Granat oder Epidot finden. Die grösseren Kristalle und Mineralien befinden sich jedoch an schwer zu erreichenden Stellen. Um diese zu finden, bedarf es des richtigen Know-hows.

ie Schweizer bezeichnen Kristallsucher als „Strahler“. Dieser Name leitet sich von der Umschreibung „ein schöner Strahl“ für einen besonders hübschen Kristall ab. Mit Strahlen assoziieren wir ein angenehmes Leuchten oder positive Energie.

Es verwundert also nicht, dass ein Mensch, der Kristalle sammelt, als „Strahler“ bezeichnet wird.

Ein Strahler hat bei der Jagd nach Kristallen oft ein „Gespür“ dafür, wo diese Geschenke der Natur zu finden sind. Manche sagen, dass sie von den Schwingungen der Mineralien angezogen werden, andere wissen selbst nicht, warum sie fündig werden, doch die Suche hat einfach ihren Reiz. Kristallsammler suchen unter hohem persönlichen Risiko die Klippen und Felswände ab und werden häufig von schmalen Quarzadern im Berg in staubige Höhlen geführt.

Alfred Kronig stammt aus Zermatt und war in seiner Jugend oft als Strahler unterwegs. Ich verbringe eine ganze Weile in seinem kleinen Mineralstübli Olympia in der Hofmattstrasse 22 und unterhalte mich mit ihm. Seine Faszination für die Mineraliensuche begann schon als kleiner Junge zusammen mit seinem Bruder German. Ihr grösster Fund war ein 25 kg schwerer Lapislazuli. Dies ist die Geschichte dazu: Vor langer Zeit fand ein Mann aus dem Ort, Herr Taugwalder, am Stockhorn, gegenüber der Monte-Rosa-Hütte, ein Stück blauen Gesteins. Alfred und sein Bruder wussten, dass dort irgendwo eine Ader sein musste. Diese wollten sie ausfindig machen. Gemeinsam liefen sie früh morgens vom Gornergrat zum Stockhorn, eine Seilbahn gab es damals noch nicht. Tagtäglich machten sie sich auf die Suche und gruben mit einer kleinen Spitzhacke bis zu vier Meter tiefe Löcher. Tatsächlich stiessen sie Wochen später am Hohtälli, 150 m oberhalb des ersten Fundes, auf das Muttergestein.

Dieses ist von eher zarter hellblauer Farbe, anders als die tiefblauen Lapislazuli aus Afghanistan, die meist für Schmuck verwendet werden. Der hier abgebildete Stein rechts ist das, was nach vielmaligem Schneiden und Schleifen als Schmuck, den er in seinem Geschäft anbietet, übrig bleibt.

Sogleich weist Alfred mich darauf hin, das nichts mehr übrig ist. Nachdem er und sein Bruder das Ausgangsgestein gefunden hatten, kamen Arbeiter der Gornergrat-Bahn, um die Ader zu finden, doch sie verwendeten Sprengstoff und jagten alles in die Luft.

Alfred Kronig ist noch vom alten Schlag. Er und sein Bruder nahmen nur Steine mit, die sie selbst gefunden und von Hand ausgegraben hatten, ganz ohne Sprengstoffe. Der heute 86-Jährige erzählt mir, dass er inzwischen vieles vergisst, doch wenn es um seine Mineralien geht, sind seine Erinnerungen ungetrübt. Das Gleiche gilt, wenn er von seiner Teilnahme bei den Olympischen Spielen berichtet. 1952 gewann er in Oslo eine Silbermedaille im Biathlon.

Lachend sagt er: „Ich traf die falsche Zielscheibe, sonst wäre es Gold gewesen, aber so ist das nun mal im Sport.“ 1956 in Cortina erreichte er in derselben Disziplin den 24. Platz. Ich frage ihn, wo er für den Langlauf trainiert hat, schliesslich ist Zermatt nicht gerade flach. Er erinnert sich noch an die Strecke, die er regelmässig als Training zurücklegte.

Vom Ort (Steinmatten) ging es rauf zur Fluhalp, hinter der Fluhalp weiter zum Rimpfishorn, dann an der Pfulwe hinab zur Täschalp, runter nach Täsch und schliesslich wieder hoch nach Zermatt, alles zu Fuss. Seine Zeit: 2 Stunden 44 Minuten.

Ein wirklich beeindruckender Mann!

Eine Frau, die sich ebenfalls mit Kristallen auskennt und diese von Strahlern aus der Umgebung kauft, ist Marina Lorenz.

Ihr Geschäft, Kristallgeheimnis, liegt etwas verborgen hinter den Holzhäusern am Kirchplatz, in einer Gasse, die noch aus dem 16. Jahrhundert stammt. Es ist eine wahre Fundgrube für Steine, Kristalle und ihre handgearbeiteten Schmuckstücke. Es hat seinen ganz eigenen „Strahl“ und lockt jeden an, der sich beim Bummeln etwas vom Hauptplatz entfernt. Marina stammt ursprünglich aus Grächen und kennt die dort ansässigen Strahler.

Den Grossteil ihrer Bergkristalle bezieht sie von Familie Biner aus St. Niklaus, einem Vater mit seinen zwei Söhnen. Ein Strahler aus dem Aletschgebiet beliefert sie mit Rauchquarz. Granat, Epidot, Smaragdit und Serpentin sammelt Marina selbst auf der Täschalp, der Fluhalp und am Gornergrat.

Sie erläutert, dass Strahler Felsen erklimmen und auf dem Rücken liegend in enge Spalten kriechen, in denen sie sich kaum noch bewegen können. Es ist ein gefährlicher Job. Manchmal treten in diesen Spalten im Gestein giftige Gase aus. Atmet der Strahler diese Gase ein, während er in dem so beengten Raum liegt, kann es leicht passieren, dass er einschläft und nie wieder aufwacht. Vor allem aus diesem Grund gilt das Gesetz, dass Strahler niemals alleine losziehen sollten.

Die meisten von ihnen glauben nicht an die heilenden Kräfte der Kristalle. Der Respekt, den sie vor ihnen haben, ist anderer Natur. Es ist fast, als könnten sie die Mineralien in der Erde erschnuppern.

Leider gibt es im Wallis immer noch Leute, die Dynamit verwenden. Marina ist strikt dagegen und kauft niemals wissentlich Kristalle, die auf diese Weise gewonnen wurden.

Sie sieht einem Stein an, ob er herausgesprengt wurde – an den kleinen Beschädigungen, die eine Explosion zwangsläufig verursacht. Deshalb ist es gut möglich, dass Sie Kristalle finden, die nur halb so viel kosten, diese wurden aber mit grosser Wahrscheinlichkeit unter Einsatz von Sprengstoffen gewonnen. „Das ist eine moralische Entscheidung, die der Kunde selbst treffen muss“, betont sie.

Marina ist seit 33 Jahren von Kristallen fasziniert, sie kann ihre Resonanzen spüren. „Wenn mich die Leute fragen, ob ich an die Kraft der Kristalle glaube, sage ich: ‚Nein, ich bin davon überzeugt.‘“ Sie hatte es jedoch nicht leicht, als sie vor 17 Jahren das Geschäft hier in Zermatt eröffnete. Es gab einiges Misstrauen, vor allem von den Katholiken der älteren Generation. An eine andere Kraft als die Gottes zu glauben, war Ketzerei. Auch heute noch sind manche Einheimische skeptisch, aber sie sagt, die junge Generation sei viel offener. „Sie haben das Gefühl, dass Kristalle eine gewisse Energie besitzen, auch wenn die nur in der Freude besteht, die sie durch ihre Schönheit und ihr Strahlen auslösen.“ Wenn ein Kunde in Ihren Laden kommt und ein Stück als Geschenk kaufen möchte, wie helfen Sie dann weiter? „Ich rate ihnen, durch den Laden zu schlendern und zu schauen, ob sie sich zu einem bestimmten Stein hingezogen fühlen. Den sollten sie nehmen, egal welche Form er hat. Dann erkläre ich ihnen die Funktion des jeweiligen Steins.“ Marina berührt mich am Arm und sieht mir in die Augen. „Ich kann Ihnen versichern, dass ihnen in 99 % der Fälle die Funktion des Steins plausibel erscheint.“ Auf dem Tisch hat Marina einen Wasserkrug stehen, in dem drei Kristalle liegen. Es sieht sehr hübsch aus und ich frage sie, wozu das gut ist. „Wasser mit Kristallen hat eine heilende Wirkung und es lässt sich ganz leicht herstellen“, verrät sie mir. „Eine besonders gute Kombination ist Rosenquarz, der für Ruhe und Harmonie sorgt, Amethyst für Spiritualität und Bergkristall für Klarheit, Reinheit und Stärke.“ Sie ist fest von der Heilkraft der Kristalle überzeugt. aufspürte, wurde vom Jagdfieber und dem Ehrgeiz, das perfekte Mineral zu finden, getrieben. Er ist ein Sammler. Dennoch fiel mir auf, dass er ebenfalls ein Stück Rosenquarz in sein Wasser gelegt hatte.

Auf meinem Küchentisch steht nun auch ein Wasserkrug mit einem Rosenquarz, einem Amethyst und einem kleinen Bergkristall. Und selbst wenn es sonst keine positive Wirkung haben sollte, so bringt es meine Familie doch dazu, mehr zu trinken. Vielleicht macht ja genau das die besondere Kraft der Kristalle aus: dass sie uns dazu ermuntern, uns selbst etwas Gutes zu tun.

Zermatter Tracht C T OSTUMES of bygone days are often the inspiration for fashion designers of today. Street wear has become the norm these days, no one can argue that jeans have become the new uniform for people all over the world.

One can no longer distinguish what country somebody comes from purely by looking at an outfit.

In 18th century Switzerland, purely by observing someone’s clothes and dialect, you could recognise even the village they were from.

The character of the villagers’ festive dress derived from the character of their surroundings, from their way of life and their beliefs and from what they found aesthetically pleasing.

In Catholic villages such as Zermatt the church’s splendour inspired creativity and ceremonial processions gave reason to wear colourful and brightly decorated feast day costumes.

Zermatt’s traditional garments are still worn at special events with pride. It is a way of paying tribute to the past. Zermatters are proud of their heritage. Painters such as Lory, Koenig and Reinhart were inspired by these wonderful costumes and painted portraits of prominent and country folk across the country. These paintings still serve today as a reference for reproducing costumes.

RACHTEN aus vergangenen Zeiten dienen heutigen Modedesignern häufig als Inspiration. Legere Kleidung ist heutzutage die Norm und niemand wird bestreiten, dass Jeans inzwischen auf der ganzen Welt zur Einheitsmode geworden sind. Es ist nicht mehr möglich, anhand der Kleidung eines Menschen Rückschlüsse auf dessen Herkunft zu ziehen.

In der Schweiz des 18. Jahrhunderts verrieten Kleidung und Dialekt sogar, aus welchem Dorf jemand stammte.

Das Erscheinungsbild der Festtagstrachten der Dorfbevölkerung spiegelte die Eigenheiten ihrer jeweiligen Umgebung, ihrer Lebensweise, ihres Glaubens und ihres ästhetischen Empfindens wider.

In katholischen Dörfern, wie z. B. Zermatt, regte der Glanz der Kirche die Kreativität an und feierliche Prozessionen boten Anlässe, um farbenprächtige, reich geschmückte Festtagstrachten zu tragen.

Nach wie vor werden die Zermatter Trachten zu besonderen Anlässen voller Stolz getragen. In 1968 a design for the typical red dress and black apron costume was fixed

by H.H. Dekan Brantschen and Mr and Mrs Lehner. It remains the same today. In particular, they designed the pattern of embroidery for the ladies’ costume. It is indigenous to Zermatt and sets the dress apart from other similar Oberwallis Trachts. It uses eleven different colours of silk thread picturing seven different symbols of Zermatt. For example, Enzian flowers, Thistles, Anemones, other Alpine herbs and small figures.

The Head-dress: Traditional folk costume is scarcely conceivable without an elaborate ornamentation worn on the head. A sizable volume could be written on the subject of the Swiss head-dress alone. In Zermatt, the small hat disappears under a wide ribbon called the Hutband encircling it. It is richly embroidered with the Zermatter design. A narrower black ribbon called the Kresband forms the lower border of the hat. It is 17 metres long and intricately twisted up to 300 times!

Der Kopfschmuck: Eine traditionelle Tracht ist kaum vorstellbar ohne eine aufwändig verzierte Kopfbedeckung. Alleine zum Schweizer Kopfschmuck liessen sich ganze Bücher füllen. In Zermatt verschwindet der kleine Hut unter einem breiten Hutband, das darum gewickelt wird. Auch dieses Band ist reich bestickt mit dem Zermatter Muster. Der untere Hutrand ist mit einem schmaleren Band eingefasst, dem sogenannten Kresband. Es ist 17 Meter lang und wird auf komplizierte Weise bis zu 300 Mal gewickelt!

The Shawl: The silk shawl is locally called a ‘Lupij’. It is fringed with tassels, worn over the shoulders and usually pinned at the breast with a brooch. It is embroidered with eleven different colours and the seven symbols of Zermatt.

The Dress: The sleeveless red dress is amply cut and pleated. It is worn relatively long, just above the ankle. The bodice of the dress has a black ribbon border with black buttons down the front.

The Blouse: The white blouse is embroidered with a thistle emblem on the sleeves and on the ruffle on the neck. The ruffle is pleated and sits like a yolk around the neck over the red dress. The sleeves of the blouse are billowing. On the cuff are the initials of the lady wearing it. This should be re-embroidered if the lady gets married.

The Apron: An apron is found in most Swiss costumes but none more beautifully embroidered than here in Zermatt. The black apron is tied at the waist and has a wide border of the local embroidery design at the bottom. This matches the hat and the shawl and completes the embroidery from head to foot.

Die Schürze: Zu den meisten Schweizer Trachten gehört auch eine Schürze, nirgends sind sie jedoch so wunderschön bestickt wie hier in Zermatt. Die schwarze Schürze wird um die Taille gebunden und hat unten einen breiten, mit dem örtlichen Muster bestickten Rand. Dieser passt zum Hut und zum Schultertuch und macht die Stickerei von Kopf bis Fuss komplett.

Hosiery, Footwear and Accessories: Almost everywhere in Switzerland the traditional dress costumes of women include white stockings. Zermatt is no exception. However elsewhere in Valais black stockings are worn. You will notice that some of the ladies carry a tote bag that is lavishly embroidered with the Zermatter design. The shoes are low with silver buckles.

Strümpfe, Schuhe und Accessoires: Fast überall in der Schweiz gehören zur traditionellen Frauentracht weisse Strümpfe. Da ist auch Zermatt keine Ausnahme. Nichtsdestotrotz gibt es im Wallis auch Ortschaften, in denen schwarze Strümpfe getragen werden.

Ihnen wird auffallen, dass manche Damen zusätzlich ein aufwändig mit dem Zermatter Muster besticktes Täschchen tragen. Die Schuhe haben niedrige Absätze und silberne Schnallen.

The Men: Men wear a rather dashing combination of a tan brown suit with a velvet lapel and a red double breasted waistcoat. Around the collar of the white shirt two red woolen bobbles are tied together, as a fun kind of neck tie. Of course they would wear a hat too. These vary but the majority wear black bowler style hats.

GÉNÉPI “Would you like a coffee, a little digestif?” you might get asked as lunch is drawing to a close. Here in the mountains, the choice of elixirs claimed to help your digestion is likely to include a glass of génépi. Considered by many to be an acquired taste, its flavour is distinctive, less sweet than many liqueurs. It is made from alpine plants of the genus Artemisia (that the English call wormwood).

Those growing high on the slopes of the Western Alps are Artemisia Glacialis.

However, it might be made from flowers but this brew is not for the fainthearted. Like its relation, Absinthe, it can pack a hefty punch. Absinthe, that highly alcoholic beverage banned in the United States and much of Europe by 1915, is made from Artemesia absinthum (a.k.a. “grand wormwood”), But génépi retains a similar aura of mystique, perhaps due to the stories of secret recipes, often handed down over the centuries by mountain dwelling families or hooded monks. Since the Middle Ages, it has been attributed with medicinal properties. The whole plant is considered digestive, expectorant, sedative and stomachic. A poultice is made as a first-aid remedy for the treatment of wounds and, appropriately for its habitat, an infusion of Artemisia Glacialis is claimed to lessen the ill effects of altitude.

But what makes génépi particularly fascinating is its resistance to commercialization. Gathering the high altitude plant that goes into génépi is an adventure in itself. The alpine blooms favour steep slopes, often mainly scree, at a height of between 2000 and 3100 metres. So harvesting, which takes place around July and August depending on the length of the previous winter, is often a dangerous occupation.

Good weather conditions are essential, but so is a thorough knowledge of the particular slope and its hazards.

There are strict regulations to the amount of the plant that can be gathered. In Aosta, this is one hundred flowers per day per person, which would translate into about two and a half litres of the final product. The rules are tightly enforced. Guards are employed to patrol the mountains and fine smugglers whose backpacks are filled beyond their quota.

Of course, not all the génépi that you find comes from a base ingredient in such limited supply. Another, closely related, member of the Artemesia family, Artemisia umbelliformis, can be grown in fields and so is more suited to higher volumes, albeit with limitations.

Altitude is still important and the plants are delicate. The beautiful Gran Paradiso National Park, an alpine conservation area in the Valle d’Aosta, provides an ideal environment for plantations.

Since 2002, Emilia Berthold has been cultivating Artemisia umbelliformis in Valsavarenche. Even under these conservation area conditions, it is not an easy flower to grow. Emy tells us that she loses seedlings every year, without knowing why. Fundamentally, it’s still an experiment. She turns the flowers into génépi on the farm, as well as selling the dried flowers for home brewing. The processes lend themselves more to artisanal style production than anything more mechanized. Carefully selected aromatic flower heads are steeped for several days in a strong, clear, pure grain alcohol, and then sugar is added. This results in a herby mix with an aroma reminiscent of chamomile. Génépi is naturally pale gold but some varieties have a final maceration of the wormwood that yields a light green hue.

The brighter green concoctions tend to derive from the addition of 58

food colouring, but a green tinge can also simply be the result of the amount of chlorophyll there happened to be in each plant used.

How do you drink génépi? There are some who like the refreshing hit of serving it on the rocks or with soda, or as a cocktail ingredient.

Apparently, a hot grog is comforting. However, génépi doesn’t really need any messing with. Straight, in a small glass at the end of a luscious lunch or delightful dinner. That lunch should take place on a sun kissed terrace looking over a glorious alpine view because génépi is, quintessentially, about the mountains.

„Wünschen Sie einen Kaffee oder einen Digestif?“, wird man Sie womöglich gegen Ende eines Restaurantbesuchs fragen. Hier in den Bergen ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit hoch, dass sich unter der Auswahl an Spirituosen, die die Verdauung anregen sollen, auch ein Génépi findet. Dessen Geschmack empfinden viele zunächst als gewöhnungsbedürftig und tatsächlich ist dieser sehr eigen und weniger süss als der vieler anderer Liköre. Er wird aus Alpenpflanzen der Gattung Artemisia (zu Deutsch: Edelraute) hergestellt. Jene Exemplare, die hoch oben auf den Hängen der Westalpen wachsen, gehören zur Art Artemisia glacialis (die sog.

Gletscher-Edelraute).

Doch auch wenn dieser Trank aus Blumen hergestellt wird, ist er nichts für zarte Gemüter. Wie sein Verwandter, der Absinth, kann er einem ganz schön zusetzen. Absinth, dieses hochprozentige alkoholische Getränk, das 1915 in den USA und weiten Teilen Europas verboten wurde, wird aus Artemisia absinthium (auch bekannt als „Wermut“) hergestellt. Doch den Génépi umgibt eine ähnliche mystische Aura, vermutlich wegen all der Legenden über geheime Rezepturen, die angeblich seit Hunderten von Jahren von Bergbauernfamilien oder Kapuzen tragenden Mönchen weitergegeben werden. Seit dem Mittelalter werden ihnen medizinische Wirkungen zugeschrieben: Die gesamte Pflanze gilt als verdauungsfördernd, schleimlösend, beruhigend und magenstärkend.

Zur Behandlung von Wunden können als Erste-Hilfe-Massnahme Wickel angelegt werden und ein Aufguss mit Artemisia glacialis soll – passend zum Standort der Pflanze – gegen Symptome der Höhenkrankheit helfen.

Besonders interessant am Génépi ist auch, dass er sich jeglicher Kommerzialisierung widersetzt. Schon das Sammeln der Hochgebirgspflanzen für den Génépi ist abenteuerlich. Die Alpenblumen bevorzugen steile, oft auch mit Schotter bedeckte Hänge in einer Höhe von 2000 bis 3100 Metern. Die Ernte, die je nach Länge des vorangegangenen Winters von Juli bis August stattfindet, ist keine ungefährliche Angelegenheit. Nicht nur bedarf es guter Wetterbedingungen, auch die genaue Kenntnis des jeweiligen Hangs und seiner Gefahren ist unerlässlich.

Für die Menge, die gepflückt werden darf, gelten strenge Vorschriften. In Aosta sind es einhundert Pflanzen pro Person und Tag, was ungefähr zweieinhalb Liter fertigen Likör ergeben würde. Die Einhaltung dieser Vorgaben wird streng kontrolliert.

Wildhüter sind in den Bergen unterwegs und verhängen Bussgelder gegen Sammler, die mehr als die zulässige Menge in ihrem Rucksack schmuggeln.

Natürlich kann bei einem so begrenzten Vorkommen des Hauptbestandteils nicht jeder erhältliche Génépi ausschliesslich aus diesem gewonnen worden sein. Ein weiterer naher Verwandter aus der Artemisia-Familie, Artemisia umbelliformis (Echte Edelraute), kann auf Feldern angebaut werden und eignet sich folglich besser für ein höheres Produktionsvolumen, wenn auch mit Einschränkungen.

Auch diese Pflanzen benötigen nämlich eine gewisse Höhenlage und sind empfindlich. Der wunderbare Nationalpark Gran Paradiso, ein alpines Schutzgebiet im Aostatal, bietet eine ideale Umgebung für den Anbau.

das gar nicht so leicht. Emy erzählt uns, dass sie jedes Jahr Setzlinge verliert, ohne zu wissen, warum. Im Grunde genommen ist es immer noch ein Experiment. Sie stellt aus den Blumen auf ihrem Hof Génépi her und verkauft auch die getrockneten Blüten an „Heimbrauer“. Aufgrund der Herstellungsverfahren bietet sich die Produktion in Handarbeit eher an als der Einsatz von Maschinen.

Sorgfältig ausgewählte, aromatische Blütenköpfe werden mehrere Tage in hochprozentigem, klarem Getreidealkohol eingelegt, anschliessend wird Zucker hinzugefügt. Dabei entsteht eine kräutrige Mischung mit einem Aroma, das an Kamille erinnert. Génépi hat von Natur aus eine blassgoldene Farbe, es gibt aber auch Sorten, die durch eine abschliessende Mazeration mit Wermut eine grünliche Färbung erhalten. Bei eher leuchtend grünen Varianten ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit gross, dass Lebensmittelfarbe hinzugegeben wurde, aber auch die in den verwendeten Pflanzen enthaltene Chlorophyll-Menge kann Einfluss auf die Farbe haben.

Wie wird Génépi getrunken? Manche bevorzugen ihn als Erfrischung auf Eis oder mit Soda, er kann aber auch als Zutat in Cocktails verwendet werden. Als heisser Grog soll er beruhigend wirken. Doch eigentlich braucht der Génépi gar keine besondere Behandlung – pur, in einem kleinen Gläschen, nach einem reichhaltigen Mittagessen oder einem gemütlichen Diner. Eine solche Mahlzeit sollten Sie am besten auf einer Terrasse mit einer herrlichen Aussicht auf die Alpen einnehmen, denn schliesslich macht genau das den Génépi aus: die Berge.

FIRST ASCENT BROUGHT TO STAGE

T

he date that man first set foot on the top of the Matterhorn has gone down in history. July 14th 1865 stands out as one of the great achievements of the “Golden Age of mountaineering” partly because the mountain had so determinedly resisted previous attempts to climb its exposed faces.

The story is engraved on memories because of the human tragedy, only three out of the seven men who reached the summit returned safely to the village. Furthermore, the survivors who made it back to Zermatt weren’t greeted as heroes but potential criminals subject to tough interrogation in a bitterly fought court case.

No one knew what really happened as the conquerors of the Matterhorn were making their ill-fated descent. The suspicion that it was the mountain itself that punished the trespassers by hurling them to their deaths entered into the stuff of legend.

So what better way to present and to explore this compelling story than on stage? Summer 2015 sees the 150th anniversary of the first ascent of the Matterhorn. A spectacular production set in the Zermatt of 1865 will tell the tale.

It’s an ambitious project and the challenges are two-fold. Logistics for a start. With a cast of 30 to 40, an audience of 800 and probably 30 performances over a two month period, we’re talking big scale. Then there’s the telling of the story itself - how will dramatic tension be created and driven? After all, we do know how it ends.

The play is the brainchild of Livia Anne Richard, an experienced author and director, who has a string of outdoor theatrical projects under her belt, mainly with the Theater Gurten in Bern. It’s produced by Tom Talent Entertainment, who are behind the success of Zermatt Unplugged. Livia has already written the script and ZT had the opportunity to chat with her about plans.

The stage is at Riffelberg. It would be hard to think of a more challenging location to stage a theatre production but it sounds magnificent. As Livia herself explained – “It’s going to be the highest outdoor theatre of Europe.”

Nestled in a natural amphitheatre, the set will represent Zermatt’s church square, incorporating the old Riffelberg hotel and 60

the chapel. The action will have characters emerging from the “Monte Rosa Hotel”, meeting in the square and, later, bringing the bodies of the victims down to the Church.

All this against the awe-inspiring backdrop provided by the Matterhorn.

Early plans situated the production in the actual church square down in town. However, practical implications like disturbing guests in nearby hotel rooms almost scuppered the whole project until the idea of moving it up to Riffelberg took seed. While this might seem only to add to the logistical problems, it offers serious advantages like the absence of light pollution as well as the glorious view. Every member of the audience will be able to see the focal point of the drama, the mountain itself.

So now the journey up t o R i f f e l b e r g b e c om e s , for t he aud ienc e, pa r t of the experience. Evocation of life in 1865 will begin on the Gornergrat train. But when they reach their seats, as the sun is sinking behind the mountains, won’t they get cold?

It is a potential problem that has been addressed and we understand that heated seats are part of the solution.

The production faces another challenge that has been turned into an opportunity rather than a problem – language.

The dialogue will be played out in three languages, as wou ld h ave h appened in the actual conversations as they took place 150 years ago. The locals converse in Walliser Deutsch and the English in their native tongue but then there are cross-overs that are entirely authentic – “And it was exactly that way. They were speaking together in a little bit of each. Of course the English men were proud to learn some German so it’s also natural or organic in the play that they speak sometimes a sentence half English and the rest when they want to include someone who doesn’t speak English then they say the rest of the sentence in German.”

Edward Whymper is remembered as a prickly character driven by his determination to be first. Having summited he threw stones down onto Carrel, his arch rival, to announce that the race to the top had been won. His reputation played a big part in the furore that followed the tragedy and the ensuing court case. But the script doesn’t make him into a caricature. You see some of the layers that build a personality that is multi-dimensional and therefore more real.

Livia points out that, unlike the other young men of the British Alpine Club, Whymper was not rich and leisured.

“I don’t make an antagonist out of him,” she tells us. “Because when you see his story, when you study his childhood, he felt he was punished by his father. He was the only one in this alpine club who didn’t study. He made an apprenticeship. So he wanted to prove that at least in mountaineering he was the one, that he was the hero of mountaineering.”

The court case was hugely damaging to the people involved at the time, exploring accusations that amounted to murder. It left ripples that were felt for many years after the events of 1865. We were curious as to how the play will deal this subject, fraught as it is with controversy.

“People don’t know exactly what happened, how four of the seven died… At the end of the piece there is the court hearing… And there they really clash. The young Peter Taugwalder, the son, he starts to scream into the whole process and there is a big mess at the end. And I leave it open who is right and who is wrong. Because we don’t know. We haven’t been there. I want to leave it a mystery. And also let the spectators decide what they think.

People are never black and white. They are always grey shadows.”

So, the end of the Whymper story is not the conclusion to the play. As is fitting for the magnificent location with the Matterhorn looking down on the action, the actual story is much bigger then these rivalries and www.zermatttimes.com

squabbles between human beings. The panorama opens out…

“Then at the end I say something about the people. How Edward Whymper becomes world famous as the conqueror of the Matterhorn and he never stops denouncing the Taugwalders. And the competition between him and Carrel, that is another great story…

Since then thousands of people have had the privilege to stand on the mountain and 500 have lost their lives. It seems like the mountain is still throwing stones... It was always there, the mountain. But then you see these little ants of people with such high ambitions. Not realising, not being aware that they are gone, just like that. We all are like that.”

Set high on a mountainside, about people with high ambitions, this play is going to be an exciting dramatization of the summer when seven men became the first to set foot on the Matterhorn’s summit. We can’t wait!

“I want to leave it a mystery.

And also let the spectators decide what they think.”

DIE ERSTBESTEIGUNG ZUM BÜHNENSTÜCK

er Tag, an dem zum ersten Mal ein Mensch einen Fuss auf den Gipfel des Matterhorns setzte, ist in die Geschichtsbücher eingegangen. Der 14. Juli 1865 markiert auch deshalb einen der Meilensteine des „Goldenen Zeitalters des Alpinismus“, weil der Berg sich allen vorherigen Versuchen, seine Felswände zu erklimmen, vehement widersetzt hatte. Ein weiterer Grund dafür, dass sich diese Geschichte so tief ins Gedächtnis eingeprägt hat, ist die menschliche Tragödie, die sich dort ereignete: Nur drei der sieben Männer, die den Gipfel erreicht hatten, kehrten ins Dorf zurück.

Schlimmer noch, die Überlebenden, die es bis Zermatt schafften, wurden nicht als Helden gefeiert, sondern mussten als mutmassliche Straftäter in einem erbittert geführten Rechtsstreit eindringliche Verhöre über sich ergehen lassen.

Niemand weiss, was sich während des verhängnisvollen Abstiegs der Eroberer des Matterhorns tatsächlich ereignete.

Der Aberglaube, dass der Berg selbst die Eindringlinge bestrafte, indem er sie ihrem Tod entgegen schleuderte, wurde zum Mythos.

Wie liesse sich diese packende Story besser präsentieren und verarbeiten als auf der Bühne? Im Sommer 2015 jährt sich die Erstbesteigung des Matterhorns zum 150. Mal und aus diesem Anlass wird eine spektakuläre Produktion, deren 62

Kulisse das Zermatt von 1865 bildet, diese Geschichte erzählen.

Es ist ein ehrgeiziges Projekt, bei dem zwei Herausforderungen zu meistern sind: Zum einen ist da die Logistik. Mit 30 bis 40 Darstellern, einem 800-köpfigen Publikum und wahrscheinlich 30 Aufführungen über einen Zeitraum von zwei Monaten ist dies ein echtes Grossprojekt.

Zum anderen stellt sich die Frage, wie die Geschichte erzählt werden soll – wie lässt sich eine dramatische Spannung erzeugen und halten? Schliesslich ist das Ende ja von vornherein bekannt.

Das Stück ist das geistige Kind von Livia Anne Richard, einer erfahrenen Autorin und Regisseurin, die bereits eine Reihe von Freilichttheaterprojekten auf die Beine gestellt hat, vor allem mit dem Berner Theater Gurten. Es ist von Tom Talent Entertainment, die hinter dem Erfolg von Zermatt Unplugged sind, produziert. Das Textbuch hat Livia bereits geschrieben und die ZT hatte Gelegenheit, mit ihr über ihre Pläne zu sprechen.

Die Bü h ne bef indet sich a m Riffelberg. Man könnte sich wohl kaum einen schwierigeren Ort für eine Theaterproduktion vorstellen, aber es klingt grossartig. Wie Livia selbst erklärt: „Es wird das höchstgelegene Freilichttheater Europas sein.“ Das Bühnenbild wird, eingebettet in ein naturgegebenes Amphitheater, den Kirchplatz von Zermatt zeigen und dabei

auch das alte Riffelberg Hotel und die Kapelle einbinden. Im Laufe der Handlung werden verschiedene Figuren aus dem „Monte Rosa Hotel“ heraustreten, sich auf dem Platz begegnen und später auch die Opfer zur Kirche heruntertragen. All das vor der Ehrfurcht gebietenden Kulisse des Matterhorns...

Die ersten Pläne sahen vor, das Stück auf dem echten Kirchplatz unten im Ort spielen zu lassen. Hier setzten jedoch praktische Überlegungen, wie z. B. dass die Gäste in den nahegelegenen Hotelzimmern gestört werden könnten, dem gesamten Projekt beinahe ein schnelles Ende, bis schliesslich die Idee aufkam, alles auf den Riffelberg zu verlagern. Dies mag zunächst nach noch mehr logistischen Problemen klingen, doch genau genommen bringt es einige echte Vorteile, wie etwa die nicht vorhandene Lichtverschmutzung und die umwerfende Aussicht. Jeder einzelne Zuschauer wird permanent den Dreh- und Angelpunkt des Dramas vor Augen haben – den Berg selbst.

Somit wird der Weg zum Riffelberg hinauf für das Publikum Teil des Erlebnisses.

Bereits in der Gornergrat-Bahn wird es einen Eindruck vom Leben im Jahr 1865 erhalten.

Wird es aber nicht zu kühl sein, wenn die Zuschauer endlich ihre Plätze einnehmen, während die Sonne hinter den Bergen versinkt? Das ist tatsächlich ein potenzielles Problem, dem jedoch mittels beheizter Sitze Abhilfe geschaffen werden soll.

Und da wäre noch eine weitere Hürde, die jedoch nicht als Problem, sondern als Chance betrachtet wird – die Sprache. Die Dialoge werden in drei Sprachen wiedergegeben, wie es auch bei den tatsächlichen Gesprächen vor 150 Jahren der Fall gewesen ist. Die Einheimischen sprechen Walliser Deutsch, die Briten in ihrer Muttersprache, aber dann gibt es da noch Mischformen, die tatsächlich völlig authentisch sind: „Genau so ist es gewesen. Sie sprachen untereinander eine Mischung aus beidem.

Die Engländer waren ja stolz darauf, ein wenig Deutsch zu können. Es ist also ganz natürlich, dass sie im Stück manchmal einen Satz auf Englisch beginnen und dann www.zermatttimes.com

den Rest des Satzes, wenn sie jemanden einbeziehen wollen, der kein Englisch versteht, auf Deutsch sagen.

Edward Whymper wird gemeinhin als widerspenstiger Charakter beschrieben, den sein unbedingter Wille, Erster zu sein, antrieb. Nachdem er den Gipfel erreicht hatte, warf er mit Steinen nach seinem Erzrivalen Carrel, um ihm zu verstehen zu geben, dass er den Wettlauf zur Spitze gewonnen hatte. Sein Ruf spielte eine wesentliche Rolle bei dem Aufruhr, der auf die Tragödie und das anschliessende Gerichtsverfahren folgte.

Doch das Stück macht ihn nicht zur Karikatur. Es werden die Schichten einer Persönlichkeit freigelegt, die mehrdimensional und deshalb umso realistischer ist. Livia merkt an, dass Whymper, anders als die anderen jungen Männer im britischen Alpine Club, nicht reich war und für sein Geld arbeiten musste. „Ich mache ihn nicht zum Antagonisten“, sagt sie uns. „Denn wenn man sich seine Geschichte anschaut, sich mit seiner Kindheit befasst, stellt man fest, dass er sich von seinem Vater bestraft fühlte. Er war der einzige in dieser Bergsteigervereinigung, der nicht studierte. Er machte eine Ausbildung.

Also wollte er beweisen, dass er zumindest im Bergsteigen der Beste war, dass er der grosse Held des Alpinismus war.“ Das Gerichtsverfahren hat den beteiligten Personen damals enorm geschadet, schliesslich lautete die Anklage auf Mord.

Es hinterliess Spuren, die auch viele Jahre nach den Ereignissen von 1865 nicht ganz verschwanden. Uns interessierte, wie das Stück mit diesem Thema umgehen würde, das ja doch sehr kontrovers ist. „Niemand weiss, was genau geschah, wie vier der sieben Männer ums Leben kamen... Das Stück endet mit der Gerichtsverhandlung... Und da geraten sie richtig aneinander. Der junge Peter Taugwalder, der Sohn, beginnt mitten im Verfahren herumzubrüllen und alles endet im Chaos. Wer recht hat und wer nicht, lasse ich offen. Denn wir wissen es nicht.

Wir waren nicht dabei. Es soll ein Rätsel bleiben. Und das Publikum soll sich seine eigene Meinung bilden. Menschen sind niemals nur schwarz oder weiss. Sie sind immer graue Schatten.“

Das Ende der Geschichte von Whymper zieht also keinen Schlussstrich unter das Stück. Passend zu der überwältigenden Umgebung mit dem Matterhorn, das über allem thront, umfasst die eigentliche Geschichte viel mehr als nur die Rivalitäten und Zänkereien zwischen den Menschen.

Das Panorama entfaltet sich... „Letzten Endes treffe ich eine Aussage über die Menschen. Darüber, wie Edward Whymper als Eroberer des Matterhorns weltberühmt wurde und niemals aufhörte, die Taugwalders zu beschuldigen. Und die Konkurrenz zwischen ihm und Carrel ist eine weitere spannende Geschichte...

Seither hatten Tausende Menschen das Privileg, auf diesem Berg zu stehen, und 500 haben ihr Leben gelassen. Es scheint, als würde der Berg immer noch mit Steinen werfen... Er war immer da, der Berg. Und dann sieht man diese kleinen Menschen, wie Ameisen, mit ihren riesigen Ambitionen. Sie begreifen gar nicht, dass es von einer Sekunde zur anderen vorbei sein kann. Das gilt für uns alle.“ Dieses Stück über Menschen mit ehrgeizigen Zielen wird, hoch oben am Berghang, eine mitreissende Inszenierung jenes Sommers bieten, in dem sieben Männer als erste den Gipfel des Matterhorns bestiegen. Wir können es kaum erwarten!
