QEII HOSPITAL CAMPAIGN TO KEEP SERVICES GOES ON

HERITAGE OPEN DAYS 9th – 11th SEPTEMBER

Protesters opposed to the loss of services at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEII) in Welwyn Garden City – the first full hospital to be built by the NHS – are stepping up their campaign. It follows an announcement that the final stage of Stevenage’s Lister Hospital revamp has been given the go ahead, a decision which will see it become the main emergency and in-patient hospital for east and north Hertfordshire by the end of 2013. Plans have been discussed to demolish the QEII and replace it with a smaller unit by early 2014 and build more than 200 homes on the site. The new smaller QEII hospital is set to include a local A&E facility, outpatients facilities, GP services, an MRI facility, X-rays and ultrasound, a unit to support elderly people, ante- and post-natal services, children’s centre and a breast clinic. Barry Cross, secretary of the Welwyn & Hatfield Keep NHS Public Campaign, said its members were not yet resigned to the fact that all services would be moving. “We’re going to step up the campaign over the next weeks and we’re going to take it as far as we can,” he said.

Heritage Open Days is a national annual event coordinated by English Heritage. It is the country’s largest voluntary cultural event involving over a million visitors having free access to a wide variety of buildings of all shapes and sizes. One local organiser is the Hitchin Society which is a charity and the Civic Society for the town campaigning to safeguard Hitchin’s historic buildings and to press for the highest standards in new developments. The most interesting attraction in Hitchin will be The Town Hall which opens especially for this event on the Saturday. Visitors can see plans for an ambitious scheme which will not only retain community space but will also house a new North Hertfordshire museum. The plans have Planning Permission Listed Building Consent and hopefully funding in place. The enlarged building will include the main community hall, smaller meeting rooms, a café, a dedicated education and activity area, a new local studies centre and a two floor North Hertfordshire museum in the gymnasium. This will have a climate controlled gallery allowing exhibitions of national significance to be shown. The scheme was made possible thanks to a close partnership between the Council and local community groups including The Hitchin Society represented by Hitchin Initiative.

THE WELWYN & HATFIELD FUNDRAISING GROUP NEEDS YOUR HELP! Are you or someone you know able to help the Welwyn and Hatfield Fundraising Group collect at a Tesco store in that area? If so please do get in touch as we urgently need your help to collect outside Tesco stores on Friday 15 & Saturday 16 October. You can collect for as little or long as you like. Your contribution on the day will help those living with cancer receive the help and support they need from Macmillan. To reserve your collection slot, to find out where your local store is or about more ways you can get involved please contact Francoise Austin on 01438 715676. Together we can make a difference. Thank you.

WELLBEING

Holidays all over, time for you! The fun in Marilyn Tuck’s work is the variety. People see her for all sorts of things: snoring, teeth grinding, and sleeping; flying, needles, thunder and claustro phobias; finding, mending and improving relationships; and, as she mentioned before, emotional stressy stuff that brings on anxiety, anger, sadness, comfort eating, drinking and smoking. Often entwined these can be unpicked and leave a person really pleasantly changed within a few weeks, or a few months. The trick is motivation, want to do it, ask for help, and then let it happen.

W

ell, the school holidays are over and you may be breathing a sigh of relief. You have your own space back. The house can stay clean for a bit longer each day and it may be a bit quieter. So, what are you going to do? Firstly, if you work, it will be back into the old routine. If you don’t work, or work part time, then you may have some time to focus on yourself. Do you need to lose weight or exercise? It’s a known fact, that as you lose weight you need to tone the muscles to get your shape back. You need to exercise, also, to use up those calories that went to fat over the holidays, or even before. Exercise does not have to be a programme at the gym, it can be involve joining a fun dance class, zumba, singing, volunteer work where you are moving about, even walking up and down the stairs at work instead of taking the lift. Why not use your own stairs at home to your advantage, get out the Wii, or find the fitness equipment under the bed. Pilates, yoga and tai chi are brilliant exercise for anyone, especially those with back problems, while using the summer weather for walking is free, has no restrictions, and clears the head. 6

If you need a shove to exercise, a kick to keep you going, then come and see me. If you have overindulged in chocolate and crisps then you had better come and get those out of your diet! I help people lose weight in all sorts of ways. The idea is to stop the continual battle up and down. And what about sleeping? We all need our sleep. The body balances and readjusts, heals and regroups when we sleep. Sleeping properly allows one to wake up feeling nice and refreshed, to think clearly and make good decisions. This is vital for a happy and confident lifestyle. Check all your family members, everyone should be sleeping well. Lack of sleep is easy to deal with. Go to my website and download

one of my relaxing sleeping audios. They come in mp3 and CD. Listen at night when you are ready to go to sleep, or when you are lying there wanting to return to sleep. The Wave of Relaxation helps you to sleep beautifully in a few short days. Powering Down helps get rid of those thoughts that waste hours of valuable sleeping time. There’s one for teeth grinders and there’s even help for snorers there, which will give everyone else a better nights sleep. For a short time these audios are at a very good price. www.marilyntuck.co.uk and remember, personalised consultations are also available in Knebworth, phone 07962 811907

COMMUNITY FOCUS

The Copper Beech Art Gallery

T

he Copper Beech Art Gallery in Little Wymondley is in a beautifully restored barn, it has been open for four years and is run by Fran Hale. The gallery is run on a non profit-making basis, in this way Fran can help as many artists as possible and the price you pay for any piece of art goes entirely to the artist. The gallery has now come of age with lots of visitors and a fantastic list of resident local artists including International artist Jean Pictan, Louise Shotter who paints, sculpts and is a goldsmith and silversmith, Cathy Smale who paints in oils, Liz Wagstaff who created images from moulding, guilding and paint effects, Fiona Benjamin who creates mosaics from fossils, precious stones and vintage china, Judith McKay who paints in water colours and acrylics,Val Cansick who paints moonlight scenes with acrylics and Simon Pierson who creates images from mathematics as well as local and fantasy scenes. There are many other artists which change on a regular basis so there is always something new and fresh to see. They have also introduced crafts from specialists including a lady that dresses teddies, a Quilter and a Milliner and you can also buy a selection of beads and findings. A vintage tea room has just opened in the Gallery serving teas and coffee with a range of homemade cakes, cream teas, sandwiches and Paninis (I highly recommend the coffee cake which was delicious). The room has vintage hand decorated furniture and surroundings and has the ambience of an old English team room offering a friendly, cheerful atmosphere. Jean Pictan has hand painted a wonderful floral scene on the floor as gift to Fran.

There are plans to start clubs in the tea room (beading, tapestry, knitting); they will be informal and an opportunity for people at all levels of skill to get together and swap ideas. Fran would also like to get people to knit a square to go in a larger piece which will then be sent to orphanages in underprivileged countries. Fran has managed to create a wonderful experience and the gallery is relaxed and welcoming. There is plenty of parking space available. Opening times are Tuesday to Saturday 10.30am to 4.00pm, for further information, call Fran on 07794 969908 or visit www.copperbeechartgallery.com

BUSINESS

Move towards compulsory online VAT filing Adam Fernandes from WKH Chartered Accountants talks about the new recommendations from the VAT man…

H

M Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has put forward recommendations to extend the on-line filing requirement for returns to allVAT-registered businesses, bringing businesses that make less than £100,000 sales annually into the on-line regime. Such businesses will also be required, under the plans, to make their payments electronically too. It is proposed that the new regulations will come into effect from 1 April 2012. As part of the switch, businesses may also have to register, de-register and alter their details online.

When must you submit your VAT Returns online?

Currently, you have to submit yourVAT Returns online and pay any VAT due electronically if either of the following applies: • you registered forVAT before 1 April 2010 and had an annual VAT-exclusive turnover of £100,000 or more for the 12 months ended 31 December 2009 • you registered forVAT on or after 1 April 2010 (regardless of your turnover) In the case of the first group, you must continue to submit all yourVAT Returns online (including nil and repayment returns) even if your turnover drops below £100,000 in the future. From April 2012, all remaining VAT-registered businesses who registered forVAT before 1 April 2010 with a VAT-exclusive turnover of less than £100,000 will also have to submit VAT Returns online and pay electronically. Even if you don’t yet have to submit online returns and pay electronically, HMRC strongly recommends you sign up to using the online service before 2012. HMRC believes

that using the online service can save you time and in most cases give you extra time to submit your return and pay the VAT due. How do you submit your return online? The first

step to submitting yourVAT Return online is to sign up for VAT online services at www.hmrc.gov.uk.This may be where the first problem comes for smaller businesses.Whilst businesses that turnover £100,000 or more are likely to have someone within their organisation who has the necessary computer skills, this will not always be the case for smaller businesses. You need to register whether you choose to use commercial software or HMRC’s free online service. Alternatively, you can use an accountant or agent to submit your returns online for you, but this may involve incurring additional costs.

What to do next? Smaller businesses should consider

whether they have the necessary IT skills to comply with HMRC’s likely requirements. If not, you should think about getting some training, or talk to your accountant about filing returns on-line on your behalf and find out the cost. You should also review yourVAT registration position – a number of businesses have seen turnover drop during the recession – If your annual sales are likely to be less than £71,000, excludingVAT, then it may be possible to de-register.This is not a step that should be taken lightly and proper advice needs to be taken to make sure that it’s the right thing to do for your business. If you would like to talk about your situation, please call Adam on 01462 687333 or 07850 504044.

ILATES and CORE STABILITY was once a secret kept by top athletes and the famous. But Pilates is now recognised as one of the best ways to work your body and improve back, joint and postural problems. What is Pilates? It uses controlled movements that re-educates the whole body into the healthiest state. The body is healthy when the muscles working around the spine are long and strong. PUB REVIEW

The Radcliffe Arms

T

he Radcliffe Arms is a Victorian Gastro pub in Hitchin situated in between the train station and the town centre. It was built around 1855 and named after the Radcliffe family, who occupied the Priory Estate from 1548 and played an important part in the social and cultural development of the town. Landlord Stuart Adler grew up and went to school in Hitchin and has a background in the hospitality industry, with over 10 years experience working in a number of local pubs and restaurants. In 2008 the Radcliffe Arms was closed down and put up for sale, it was almost purchased as a residential development but Stuart had other ideas. Living round the corner of the pub, he saw an opportunity for a great 16

business on his door step and put together some rough plans. He was fortunate enough to find a local investor who bought in to his vision and provided the finance to rebuild and refurbish the pub back to its former glory; In June 2009 the new Radcliff Arms was open for business offering a mix of simple dishes cooked well with a great selection of drinks in a fantastic contemporary setting. Head Chef James has 16 years experience of working in Michelin star pubs and restaurants throughout the Midlands including the Pheasant at Kingston and the Snooty Fox, he was headhunted to join Stuart and bought a great team with him. All food is prepared fresh and sourced from high quality British suppliers, they grown their own vegetables in a local allotment, bake their own bread and even catch their own fish which is a monthly team event! Starters include Seared Scallops with Chorizo, Chick Pea Ragu and pea-shoots, Goats Cheese Bavarois with Parmesan and Olive Brittle and Tomato ConsommĂŠ, and Frito Misto (Crispy fried Squid, Plaice Goujons and Rock Salmon) with Lime and Crab Aioli. The main courses include Roasted Pork Tender-loin with Butter Beans, Chorizo, Calca Nero and Sage Pesto,Twice Cooked Blade of Beef with Mash, Red Cabbage and Crispy Ham, and

ased in Kimpton, Spectrum IT Support provides affordable, high quality, jargon free computer services to homes and businesses within a 15 mile radius of Kimpton (including all villages covered by Village Life). The business was set up three years ago by Nigel Dowse who has over 18 years of experience in IT support and management. Prior to setting up the business, Nigel had spent 10 years overseeing IT projects throughout Europe for an investment bank in London, and for a number of these years had thought about starting his own business. Nigel realised that many local home users and small businesses had limited access to high quality IT support. He believed that by delivering IT services locally, he could respond to calls quickly – ideally within a matter of hours – whilst reducing his costs and passing those savings on to

his clients. In 2008 Nigel took the plunge, left the city, and Spectrum IT Support was born, with the aim of providing a local “One Stop Shop” for IT services. Some of Spectrum IT Support’s services include: upgrading PCs and laptops that are running slowly, removing viruses and spyware, installing internet security software, providing data backup and data recovery systems, setting up wired and wireless networks, and installing business management software such as Sage, MS Access databases and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) solutions. Nigel also offers website design and website promotion services including search engine optimisation (SEO) and help with setting up Google Adwords campaigns. Nigel has grown his business by consistently delivering high levels of customer satisfaction and offering a “No Fix, No Fee” guarantee. So, whether you need some tips on buying a computer, help installing a network, assistance troubleshooting an existing problem, advice on setting up and promoting your website or simply want to ensure that your IT system is performing as well as it should, then contact Nigel.

HEALTH & FITNESS FOCUS

Living ‘Gluten - Free’

T

hinking back to when our toddler daughter was diagnosed ‘Coeliac’ and we therefore had to exclude gluten from her diet was a day of mixed feelings. We were so relieved that the solution to her ill health was discovered quite easily but on the other hand knew no-one else with the condition. A referral to the dietician spelt out all that we had to exclude from her diet, namely wheat, oats, barley and rye. These ingredients can be hidden in things such as ketchup, sausages, yoghurts and even drinks. Shopping now took twice as long, labels had to be read in great detail and ingredients checked, but was made simpler by consulting our ‘food bible’ a list of GF manufacturers products. We also had to convince friends, teachers, carers and family members that the diet was vital to her health and not some faddy regime made up to feed a fussy eater! Now, 28 years on, the shops are positively loaded with goodies in their ‘Free-From’ sections and most people will have heard of the term ‘Coeliac.’There is also an amazing array of GF cookery books and recipes available, though some take a

while to perfect as you substitute wheat flour for that made of rice, potato or corn, taking pastry making to a whole new level! One of the best things we did was to join the Beds & Mid Herts local support group bedsandmidherts@coeliac.org.uk.Their help and support was invaluable to us in the early days and, still being members, we have a chance to pass on our years of experience of managing a gluten free diet with others newly diagnosed. Our local group has organised a Gluten Free Food Fair on September 17th at the Weatherley Centre, Eagle Farm Road, Biggleswade, where there will be approx 30 producers of Gluten Free Products from all over the UK with supplies to try and buy.The event starts at 10.00am until 2pm with free parking and a £1 entry which includes a prize draw ticket. Full details can be found on the above website or by contacting Martin Cooper on 01462 436655.

BUSINESS FOCUS

Goal Setting

M

ost of us spend more time planning our holidays each year than we ever do planning our lives. We go through life with dreams and ambitions failing to plan the route we need to take to get there. Then we are surprised when we find ourselves somewhere completely different – not always where we want to be! In both work and life if we are to succeed in achieving our dreams we need to set goals. These goals need to be clearly defined and supported by our passion and drive to bring them alive. VISUALISE – With eyes closed imagine yourself in the place that you dream of for yourself. Consider who will be around you and what you will be feeling, doing and enjoying. Let those thoughts and feelings flow... and you have your goal! BELIEVE – What you dream of for yourself is achievable. If others enjoy such a lifestyle then you can do the same, provided, of course, you are prepared to put the work in!

ORDER – Now begin to order the things that you will need to do to achieve your goals. How will you find the time, money, support, skills etc to get you to where you Fringeline FUnky Feet 0411 QP.indd want to be? Write this all down.

DAILY CHECKS – Review your planned activities each day – are they taking you towards your goal? Discard those that aren’t. Keep your goal firmly in your mind. Create your own visual interpretation and pin it to your wall. THINK POSITIVE – and use positive language. If those gremlins start to creep in, give them short shrift and just remember, you can do whatever you want to do!
