Conscience comes to Stevenage this month

Adapted from the bestselling novel of the same name, the play Conscience will be on show for one night only at The Gordon Craig Theatre, Stevenage September 27th, before moving on to the west end of London.

Conscience is a story about a self-obsessed, bitter middle-aged woman, a compassionate teenage girl with a cross to bear and a misogynistic retired police officer – three people with nothing in common find themselves trapped together in a hell of their own making. As the story unfolds we see they are not so different. This is a fictional story based on actual events but where does the fiction end and the truth begin?

Written and directed by Codicote based Comedian and author Johnny Tait, Conscience opened in April this year to critical acclaim, and has kept the audiences spellbound.

Described as taking the audience on “An emotional rollercoaster with a dramatic twist at the end” “Conscience” is sure to have theatre goers at The Gordon Craig riveted to their seats.

Heritage Open Days 6th - 9th September

The Heritage Open Days weekend is on the 6th - 9th September this year, it allows visitors free access to historic and interesting buildings that are either not usually open or would normally charge an entrance fee. This year The Hitchin Society promotes ten venues in Hitchin plus guided walks around the historic town centre. There are also six more places to visit in the adjacent parishes of Ickleford, Preston, St Ippolyts and Wymondley.

A very popular venue each year is The British Schools Museum. It is appropriately based in Queen Street, Hitchin and received The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service from Her Majesty when she visited the town in June.

Guided tours are available including the 1837 Monitorial Schoolroom, the 1853 Gallery Classroom and the 1905 Edwardian/WW1I Classroom. The cafe and shop will be open.

The Biggin is an equally popular place to visit. Originally a Gilbertine priory dating from 1361 it was converted to Almshouses mid 17th century. The Triangle Community Garden and Ransom’s Pavilion are new venues this year and there will be a local history exhibition, refreshments and guided tours.

Elsewhere there are guided tours at the Friends Meeting House which was built in1959 above the old Quaker burial ground. St Mary’s Church, Churchyard, Hitchin will also offer guided tours of what is the largest parish church in Hertfordshire with many medieval features.

Heritage Open Days is the country’s largest voluntary cultural event and is supported nationally by English Heritage.

The local organiser is The Hitchin Society which is a charity and the civic society for the town campaigning to safeguard Hitchin’s historic heritage and to support the best modern architecture. 6 easy ways to get slimmer & fitter for free...

6. Be more aware of your conversations.

No-one else wants to hear your excuses. If you want to be slimmer and fitter then do it. Show others you are capable of it. Actions do speak louder than words, and best of all, you benefit.Yes! Fantastic new dishes being served at Codicote Spice

T

his month I popped back to Codicote’s Indian Restaurant – Codicote Spice to sample some of the new dishes on the menu such as Chicken or Lamb Rongpuri, cooked mild to medium with button mushrooms, fresh garlic, ginger and coriander and Fish Kofta Masala, an Indian fish (talpia), which is made in to spicy balls with crushed garlic, ginger, cadomen and coriander, and served mild to medium.

To start I had Bonoful King Prawn which was two large beautifully cooked prawns with a lovely crispy coating of Indian Lassi with spice and eggs.

For my main course Mohammed recommended I try The Lamb Nagra, a fairly hot Indian Chilli dish.

The lamb was really tender and the dish was on the hot side and full of flavour. I had a side of Saag Motor (spinach and Indian peas) along with a garlic Nan. Both of these side dishes were delicious and perfectly complimented the curry.

I really enjoyed this meal and it made a lovely change from the usual dishes that I order. If you fancy trying something new, have a chat with one of the waiters who will be happy to recommend something based on what you like. All dishes can be adjusted to your own taste with different levels of spice and heat.

We caught up Pat Harley who was eating with her sister and friends, she told us, “I’ve been coming here for years, the food is always lovely and the service is great.We’ve had the Banquet tonight which is really good value for money!”

Codicote Spice has been established for 15 years and is open every day 6.00pm to 11.30pm and 6.00pm to 12.00am Friday’s and Saturdays.They also offer a takeaway service with free delivery within 3 miles of Codicote. Every Wednesday is Banquet Night were you can enjoy a starter, a main dish, a side dish and a Nan or rice for just £9.95.

I would highly recommend a visit to Codicote Spice to try the new menu and enjoy a great curry with wonderful friendly service.
