7 • THE BRIGHTON CHARITY BALL

The Brighton Charity Ball T

he Brighton Charity Ball is taking place at one of Brighton’s most prestigious hotels, the Brighton Hilton Metropole, to raise much needed funds for Brain Tumour Research. This glamorous event is being sponsored by Profile Model Management, London and is being organized by FunkyLush Events and Gifts for Angels at no cost to the charity. “Funkylush Events” a husband and wife team with a multitude of experience in all event planning and organisation. Their distinct, creative and forward thinking company has organised many events throughout Sussex. With a genuine passion and natural ability for providing quality, stylish and memorable events, there is no doubt that The Brighton Charity Ball will be a night to remember. The evening is supported by Gifts for Angels is being held in loving memory of “Lola Rice”. Gifts for Angels are an online shop that sells bright and beautiful grave side pieces and sympathy gifts. It was established 2 years ago by Michelle De La Motte-Rice after the devastating loss of her daughter Lola who this evening is being held in memory of. Lola was nearly 3 years old when she woke one morning feeling sick. Over the next 3 days several doctors diagnosed Lola with a tummy bug. On the 4th day following a small seizure she was rushed to A&E. After many hours she was given a brain scan where they discover Lola had a Brain Tumour. After a major operation in St Thomas’ the next day, Lola passed away. Brain tumours are the BIGGEST CANCER KILLER of children and adults under 40 years of age in the UK and yet it receives less than 1% of the national cancer research budget. It is not a particularly well known fact, but 20% of all cancers spread to the brain.

Brain Tumour Research was launched in 2009 to raise awareness of and funding for scientific research into brain tumours and improve outcomes for patients. It is the only national charity in the UK that is dedicated to granting 100% of its funds to continuous and sustainable scientific research into brain tumours. A cure for this dreadful disease needs years of dedicated research if we are to achieve the same success in treatments as have been discovered for diseases such as leukaemia, breast and lung cancer. The aim of this charity is to establish a network of flourishing brain tumour research centres throughout the UK, which together will put this county at the forefront of international brain tumour research. We currently have one established in Portsmouth and now have three more in Plymouth, Imperial College London and UCL. We need to raise £1 million per year to fund each centre, so our aim is to raise £7 million per annum. The Brighton Charity Ball promises to be an evening not to be missed! There are very few tickets left but if you want to be there get in touch quickly!

you asked for. I can certainly confirm this from my experience. All trees are made from high quality paper and cut and mounted in a colour combination of your choice, whether to match curtains, cushions or overall room colour. Alex is always looking for new challenges and particularly enjoys it when someone comes to her with a new idea. So far this has ranged from bonsai trees to willow trees, so keep an eye on her Facebook page for some new trees over the next few months. Currently Alex is planning her Christmas orders so contact her quickly should you wish to order in time for the festive day. And do bear her in mind for your future special occasions – a birthday or anniversary, a wedding or christening. In fact why wait for an occasion?!? Although paper cut tree pictures forms the majority of Alex’s orders, she also makes lamps and lampshades, floating frames and vinyl wall stickers. Her focus for 2015 is to work on more of these designs. She even hopes to expand into making picture frames to compliment the trees as this is something people always seem to be asking for. This of course is time allowing! Following the success of the Ideal Home Show there are no imminent plans to attend another major show as she hopes to focus on the customer base she is steadily building and hoping to grow.

To see further examples of Alex’s work, please visit her website www.dinkythings.co.uk. And like her on Facebook – www.facebook.com/ dinkythings2. Or if you are looking to enquire about a bespoke item, please email alex@dinkythings.co.uk for more information.

12 •• GINETTE BACK IN TIME 12

Dinky Things I

first met Alex Scoines (founder and owner of Dinky Things) in April this year at The Ideal Home Show in London. I was bowled over by her creations and ordered a canvas picture from her on the spot. It now has pride of place in our lounge and it seemed only fair to share her wonderful creations with you. Alex started her business in 2012. Having had a successful career in London for some years, she felt after the birth of her second son, it was time to hand in the Oyster card and find a way of working from home that fitted in with being a mother, housewife but also business woman. Alex had always had a love of all things paper and used to tinker with designs in her spare time. As this was becoming more and more limited with the demands of her family and work, Alex began for form the idea of starting her own business by turning her hobby into a money making occupation. The first design that paid its way was a simple family tree design she made for a friend. As with all good ideas, word of Alex’s paper cutting expertise and unique designs soon spread and orders started to flow in. In no time at all, her business had flourished and she has never looked back. With Dinky Things nearing its third anniversary, Alex had the opportunity this year to exhibit at the Ideal Home Show as I have mentioned above. It was an incredibly daunting experience for her as a one woman business. But her belief in her products, her personal touch and the uniqueness of each design had Alex taking on orders from the Show that has kept her busy ever since – fulfilling the original Show orders and taking more from word of mouth recommendations and internet inquiries. My order was for a family tree leaf design on canvas. Alex took full details of all the names I wanted on the picture (including the cat!) plus a personal detail of each of our hobbies. She took the details away and mocked up a tree which she emailed to me. We made a couple of changes before finally settling on a design I was 100% happy with. A couple of weeks later the picture arrived safe and sound and in time for the children to give it to their dad for Father’s Day. Although the Ideal Home Show was Alex’s highlight of the year (it gave her the opportunity to meet and discuss her paper designs in person with her customers), most of her orders have historically come via Facebook and other social media. To make an oak or leaf tree canvas would take Alex an average of 3 to 4 hours to both design and make the tree, and she can produce up to 5 different products a week. products are ensured to arrive by the date they are needed to make sure no-one is disappointed. It usually takes about two weeks from initial contact through to receiving the tree or other product, so it’s always worth leaving enough time (especially during busy periods) though she does squeeze urgent orders in when she can. All Alex’s trees are bespoke and designed with her clients requirements at the forefront of her mind. She would not finalise a cut until she was sure you were getting exactly what

Holiday homes for man's best friend!

A new business has launched in Sussex offering dog owners in the BN postcode area a home based alternative to kennels Run by Karey Considine and her dog Shearer, Wagging Tails gives dogs their very own holiday as the only guest in the home of a specially selected dog carer. All Wagging Tails carers are experienced current or former dog owners, are at home during the day, have been licenced by their local council and are full insured. West Sussex resident, Karey, a qualified teacher of the Hearing Impaired and fundraiser for Hearing Dogs has been a dog owner for many years and fully understands the difficulty fellow owners have when leaving their dogs to go on holiday;

“As a dog owner I have spent hundreds of hours in the last 40+ dog owning years trawling the web, phone books and notices in the likes of pet shop windows and vets notice boards, looking for alternatives to impersonal, uncomfortable, cold kennels without ever finding that perfect solution. The kindness of family and friends have been overused and on some occasions holidays or life opportunities have been cancelled or postponed when no satisfactory alternative was available. My aim is to give fellow owners the peace of mind to relax while they are away knowing that their best friend is having a great holiday of his own in the home of one of my carers. Karey is looking for potential carers who would like to welcome dogs into their homes for a holiday. Many Wagging Tails carers describe the role being much like that of a Grandparent - all the fun, then you get to give them back and look forward to the next visit! As well as the companionship of the dogs they are looking after carers receive a small payment for looking after the dogs in their care. To find out more about Wagging Tails please give Karey a ring on 01903 414 074 or 07869 470 570, email bn@waggingtailsuk.co.uk or visit www.waggingtailsuk.co.uk/bn

Trish and Violet met through one of the Shoreham Face book groups, discussing the fate of the empty shop, Trish, having recently left Simone’s in Steyning was looking for a change locally, and Violet and her husband were setting up. Placed on Brunswick Road in the shell of the sandwich shop that didn’t ever appear to open, it was a daunting building site when they first arrived, now it has been transformed into a beauty emporium with a few more exquisite touches coming soon! Passing by and having a nose, spotting they had just opened, It was Charlotte one of the teams friendly and smiling face that

encouraged me to stop and see if they would be interested in featuring in VL and luckily for me they were. Trish heading up and managing the store offered me a Kerastraight mask treatment and tidy up. After a relaxing hair wash whilst sitting in literally the best massaging chair known to man (fact!) she sorted out the bits that had to go and tidied up the rest, covering and drying my hair with the moisture mask, ready for the second wash. After drying and styling my hair literally felt like silk and after a couple more washes still feels the same, what a result! Highly recommended. Trish and I had a great chat; she is highly trained and skilled, earning a high accolade of awards and skills over the years, luckily for us she is now based in Shoreham. Uniquely Vio’s is the first and only Afro – Cross European Salon in Shoreham, whether you want a weave, blow dry or a kinky twist you can get it here in the good hands of Violet who is a highly trained in Kenya hairdresser, specialising in both Afro – Carribean and European hair and has also trained in both the UK and Kenya in nail care, offering deluxe treatments, get polish, manicures and pedicures using the hugely popular OPI range. They will soon be stocking the brand TIGI and their products – including all day to day styling products plus the copyright TIGI colour range which is 100% intermixable, giving each client bespoke results each time. Plus Angel links hair extensions, made with 100% Remy hair and won’t cause any damage to your hair, and the salon for Rapid Tan with Diane who is has trained and worked within the tanning industry for the last three years. I was lucky enough to meet the team and have a Kerastraight treatment and hair tidy up with Trish, I would highly recommend that you do too – The girls here at Vio’s Angels are Angels indeed, what a friendly and helpful bunch. I had coffee and chat on tap which I am very keen on as you know plus a fantastic hair treatment – thank you very much ladies, I will definately be back soon! Vio’s Angels Offers you Excellent Quality treatments for your Hair and Nails by highly qualified stylists at an affordable price. 9 Brunswick Road, Shoreham-by-Sea BN43 5WA 01273 463652 www.facebook.com/pages/Vios-Angels

Village Living Meets... Ben & Lucas from Gutter Cleaning Services Drains dripping and overflowing in the night? Who you gonna’ call?? – Well, you can try Ghostbusters but I would personally recommend Ben and Lucas for this one! Having grown up together and been friends since school, these two join forces each year from October until the end of February to get the gutters of Sussex clear and functioning! Each job is priced individually, following a free quote and estimate your job will be done within a week of your call and negotiable prices are given on quotes! This includes a full service, cleaning of downpipes, and a complete flush through. If you have any problems they will let you know before fixing and charging you more, but the pair are hands on and able to repair there and then to prevent any future problems. The job (with no extra problems) should take 1-2 hours but obviously each job is different. Be ready for winter, with a reliable and friendly local service which will ensure your gutters are leaf and moss free getting you all set for winter. Ben and Lucas are extremely reliable, hard working and friendly, they have a great deal of experience and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them! For a free quote please call Ben & Lucas on

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION

BOOK LAUNCH

Steyning and District Branch. Lewis Whittaker, RBL Branch Chairman 01903 535240

‘MEASURES OF GENIUS: the scientists who gave their name to units of measure’ – by local author Alan Durden is being published by Bramber Press.

With all the recent coverage of the 70th anniversary of D-Day and the 100th anniversary of the start of WW1, I thought it might be a good time to let you have an update on the activities of the Royal British Legion in Steyning. It is our intention to repeat the extremely successful Poppy painting competition for local primary schools, and a local artist, Tricia Gill, a member of the Steyning Arts Group has kindly offered to donate a “Poppy” painting to the Poppy Appeal, the painting is now complete and is, indeed, quite beautiful. The painting will be on show at our various functions. We will be running a lottery for this painting together with other prizes including an embroidery donated by Fred Taylor and a 24inch flat screen TV, during the Autumn. Tickets are now available and the prize draw will take place on Monday the 17th of November at our Poppy Appeal festival lunch. We are to have a visit from the Horsham Royal British Legion band on Sunday the 26th of October to the Steyning Centre for “A tribute to our Forces”concert, tickets will be on sale nearer the time. As ever, local businesses are coming to the fore with financial assistance, the support we get from everyone in the area continues and we are extremely grateful for all your help. One very important fact to be considered is that your committee are not getting any younger and we really would like some fresh blood to assist so if you would like to come forward with any offer it would be really appreciated. It is imperative that the work of the Royal British Legion is continued. Please keep your eyes on the notice boards around Steyning for information about our activities as we would love to see you, they are open to all, not just members, so please feel free to contact myself (home number below) or any other member of our committee.

The book launch takes place at 7.30pm on Friday, 31st October, at St Mary’s House, Bramber. Admission is free. Ticket: 01903 816205 or www.bramberpress.co.uk.

24 • LAVENDER & LOVAGE

There are few things more satisfying then making your own preserves, whether they be from your own home-grown produce, or excess crops from family and friends. Alternatively, it may be that great bulk buy from the local Farmer’s Markets. This month in Village Living magazine, I have shared a recipe for Old Fashioned Spiced Apple Chutney, perfect for the Festive cheeseboard and when served with cheese on toast, as well as with cold cuts and meats too. It’s easy to make and can be made with windfall apples if you have any. Have a fun time in the kitchen!

Spiced Apple Chutney

Karen

Ingredients: • 1 lb (450g) onions, weight is for onions when peeled and finely chopped • 2 lbs (900g) cooking apples, weight is for apples when peeled, cored and roughly chopped • 4 ounces (100g) sultanas • 1 ounce (25g) fresh ginger root, grated • 1 teaspoon dried ginger powder • 2 teaspoons mixed spice • 1 lb (450g) soft brown sugar • 1/2 pint (300mls) malt vinegar • 1/2 pint (300mls) cider apple cider vinegar • 1 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon pepper Method: 1. Place all the prepared onions and apples into a large preserving pan and add the remaining ingredients. 2. Bring slowly to the boil and then lower the heat so that chutney cooks at a fast simmer. 3. Stir the chutney regularly and make sure it does not “catch” and burn on the base of the preserving pan. 4. Keep on cooking until the chutney is the consistency of a thick jam and all the liquids have dissolved. (A trick to check if it is cooked is to draw your wooden spoon across the chutney, if the space that is left fills up with liquid, the chutney is not ready yet!). 5. Spoon the hot chutney into hot and sterile jars and seal immediately. Makes about 4 lbs chutney. Store in a dark and cool place and leave to mature for at least 2 weeks. Will keep in ideal storage conditions for up to 2 years+.
