THE OFFICIAL MAGAZINE OF ISE 2020
WELCOME TO
Mike Blackman, Managing Director, Integrated Systems Events
I
’m happy to welcome you to this year’s edition of RISE – the official magazine of ISE 2020. Within these pages you’ll find a wealth of information to help you get the most out of your visit to the show. As you are probably aware, this will be the last ISE to be held at the RAI in Amsterdam. It will also be the biggest and best of our 15 editions in this fantastic venue and this very hospitable city. Our attendee numbers have grown steadily every year since we started in 2004 – to the point where ISE has become the world’s biggest show for the global professional AV and systems integration market. The involvement of our co-owners, leading industry associations AVIXA and CEDIA, not only means we cover both the commercial and the residential markets; they are also key players in our very strong professional development programme, which we are again promoting with the slogan ‘Learn. Discover. Be Inspired’. An important driver of our growth has been the increasing proportion of AV end-users in our attendee base. Because our end-user attendees work in a broad range of vertical market sectors, we’re on a mission to extend our conference offering to reflect as many of these as we can. The ISE 2020 conference programme contains no fewer than 13 conferences – our biggest ever selection. New for this year are the Control Rooms Summit and two CEDIA events: the Cybersecurity Workshop and the Design & Build Conference. These will all take place at the Hotel Okura, just a few minutes from the RAI Amsterdam, which proved very popular as a conference venue with ISE 2019 attendees. The Smart Building Conference will relocate here, and all the conferences held here last year will return. AVIXA is once again hosting its Higher Education AV Conference and Enterprise AV Conference, as well as its free FlashTrack education sessions. For its part, CEDIA has a four-day programme of education sessions, as well as its free CEDIA Talks. Turning to the show floor, we once again have 15 halls packed with the latest AV solutions. There are six Technology Zones to discover: Audio & Live Events, Digital Signage & DooH, Education, Technology, Residential, Smart Building and Unified Communications. We’ve managed to squeeze some more exhibition space into Hall 5; the temporary extension that
‘The ISE 2020 conference programme contains no fewer than 13 conferences – our biggest ever selection’ we had at ISE 2019 has been made larger and permanent. There’s also a new focus on Hall 14. Our new Innovation Zone is there, designed to spotlight exciting solutions from debuting exhibitors. The Main Stage, offering free high-level thought leadership sessions organised by AVIXA, CEDIA, AV Magazine and ourselves, is relocating here; and nearby there will be an attention-grabbing ‘VR at ISE’ feature. If you’re an early riser, it’s worth noting that Hall 15 (at the front of the RAI complex) opens half an hour before the rest of the halls each morning of the show. And at the beginning and end of each day, keep an eye out for a spectacular projection mapping showcase on the façade of the RAI’s Elicium complex. If you’re in Amsterdam on the Monday before the exhibition opens, I thoroughly recommend attending our Opening Address. Given by former Disney executive Duncan Wardle, it promises to be a thought-provoking exploration of how we can all tap into qualities we may have forgotten we had – such as inquisitiveness
and creativity – to make our businesses more innovation-focussed. As I mentioned earlier, the City of Amsterdam and the RAI have been excellent partners since we first came here in 2005. We’ll be sad to say goodbye, but we’re also very excited about our new home – Barcelona. From 2021, ISE will take place in the Gran Via at the Fira Barcelona, which has the space for growth that we need to continue to serve this industry. You can find out more about what to expect in our new Catalonian location in a special themed area between Halls 7 and 8, which we’re calling ‘Hola Barcelona!’. This is also the title of a special event in the Forum on the last day of the show, where we will be looking forward to ISE 2021 but also celebrating our history. I wish you safe travels to Amsterdam and look forward to welcoming you to ISE 2020.

SHOW FEATURES AND EVENTS n MONDAY 10 FEBRUARY IN THE FORUM, RAI
Unlock your business’s innate creativity Duncan Wardle will give the Opening Address at ISE 2020, with the theme ‘Think Different’. Wardle has made a career out of doing just that. As global head of PR at Disney, he was responsible for building an Olympic-sized swimming pool down Main Street USA at Walt Disney World, just for Michael Phelps to swim in during a Superbowl half-time show; sending his son’s Buzz Lightyear for an 18-month stint on the space shuttle Endeavour; and putting Mickey Mouse ears on Concorde. Ten years ago, he became Head of Innovation and Creativity at the entertainment giant. After surveying 5,000 employees across Disney Parks, Imagineering, Lucasfilm and Pixar, he identified five barriers to innovation and creativity in organisations – and set about demolishing them. “We were all born creative,” he says. “But we’ve just been told so often that we’re not, we’ve forgotten how to be.” Now an independent consultant, though still retaining his links with Disney, he speaks and runs workshops that give organisations the tools to encourage, develop and implement new business ideas. He observes: “All the CEOs are saying, ‘I need you to think different, we need to disrupt, we must innovate,’ and the employees are saying, “That’s great, are you going to show me how?” And nobody’s doing the ‘how’.” What he has done is to take “the best of what I’ve learnt from working with companies like Apple, Disney, Pixar and [global design company] IDEO, and simplified it to make innovation easy, creativity tangible and the process fun.” The fun aspect is important, he says, because “you can’t change a culture unless the employees choose to do it for you. Therefore, if you want them to innovate, you have to give them a toolkit that they
want to use when you’re not around – so it has to be fun.” The Opening Address will take place on Monday 10 February at 18:00 in the Forum, RAI Amsterdam. It is free to attend
OPENING RECEPTION
Following Duncan Wardle’s Opening Address, all attendees and exhibitors are welcome at the ISE 2020 Opening Reception, which takes place in the RAI’s Forum Lounge. Meet up with colleagues, plan your time at the show or just exchange the latest gossip over complimentary food and drinks. It is free to attend.
n ALL WEEK OUTSIDE THE FRONT OF THE RAI
Elicium projection mapping will wow the crowds A spectacular projection mapping on part of the RAI complex will put a smile on the faces of ISE 2020 attendees as they leave the show each evening – and also raise the profile of the show among Amsterdam locals. The upper floors of the futuristic nine-storey Elicium building at the front of the exhibition centre will be transformed by the projection – specially created for this location – which will amuse, amaze and intrigue its audience. Unlike the test image shown here, content will be mapped to the shape of the front façade, creating an extravaganza that will be seen by large numbers of people passing the RAI on foot, in cars or in trams, or using the Europaplein Metro station just outside the exhibition centre. The projection will be produced by ISE and the RAI, working in conjunction with five event partners. The projectors themselves will be provided by LANG AG, a leading AV rental company that is a long-time supporter of ISE. Augmenting the projected images will be white laser mapping from HB Laserkomponenten, and illumination from an Ares XS LED Wash from CLF Lighting on the upper storeys. It won’t just be a visual experience, however – there will be a compelling audio track, brought to the audience’s ears via amplifiers and speakers from Biamp. The content will be created by Tenfeet, a specialist in lighting technology
and show production, while Indyvideo will provide containers for the projectors and operators, as well as technical production support. Attendees are assured an exciting spectacle that is also an excellent showcase for key ISE technologies. The projection is expected to start at 17:00 on Monday 10 to Thursday 13 February, (16:00 on Friday 14 February), and to run until 22:00

Creativity to be recognised at Stand Design Awards 2020
Once again, ISE is proud to host the ISE Stand Design Awards competition, which is now in its fourth year. Created to acknowledge ISE exhibitors and their stand-design efforts, the awards are managed by EXHIBITOR magazine, an award-winning print and online magazine featuring best practices for trade show marketing. Stands will be automatically entered into the awards and will be judged on site during ISE 2020. However, any stand that has previously won an ISE Stand Design Award and whose design employs roughly the same size footprint and/or reuses approximately 50% or more of the previous winning stand is ineligible for the competition. There are four categories, 49sqm or fewer, 50-199sqm, 200-399sqm, and 400sqm or more.
EXHIBITOR magazine’s Editor, Travis Stanton, along with Senior Writer and Awards Programme Manager Linda Armstrong, will be on site for the duration of the show and will complete the initial round of judging to select the finalists. Stanton has served as Editor of EXHIBITOR magazine since 2005. Armstrong has written about exhibit marketing and stand design for more than 15 years. “Each year, as ISE grows, so too grows the role of experiential design on the trade show floor,” said Stanton. “To take full advantage of the window of opportunity that ISE represents – while simultaneously maximising the returns on their face-to-face marketing investments – companies annually up their game, which keeps the exhibit halls fresh, engaging and teeming with technological innovations.” The finalists will be judged by an expert panel of designers and marketers, who will award scores based on a specially defined set of criteria. The judges are: ●● Andrea Fiorito, Art Director of Brand Events, Simmetrico Srl, Milan, Italy ●● Edward Hodge, Creative Director, BRC Imagination Arts, Burbank, CA, USA ●● Petra Lammers, CEO, On Live Line GmbH, Cologne, Germany ●● Suzanne Morsch, Founder, Su, Design Us, Woerden, The Netherlands ●● Thomas Zettlitz, Creative Director, Atelier Damböck Messebau GmbH, Munich, Germany Scores will be based on eight different assessment criteria points, including: strength of communications, integration of technology, impact, and effective use of space. The Stand Design Awards run throughout ISE 2020, with the Awards Ceremony taking place at 16:30 on 13 February on the ISE Main Stage in Hall 14

n THROUGHOUT THE SHOW IN HALL 14
Try out our interactive VR feature VR at ISE – an exciting new feature for ISE 2020 – is sure to draw attendees to Hall 14, along with the Main Stage and the Innovation Zone. Attendees can explore the latest in virtual collaboration as well as experiencing an interactive VR ride. Two Digital Projection Multiview VR systems will be demonstrated, showing how virtual reality can be used in immersive, collaborative spaces. Multiview allows up to three people wearing fast-switching glasses to view and interact with a stereoscopic 3D virtual model. Crucially, each person sees the object from their own viewpoint – unlike conventional multi-user VR systems where everyone sees exactly the same perspective. This provides a significant degree of realism, as all users see the model behaving just as a real object would do as they walk around it. It also means that they are not cut off from each other, as they would be if they wore head-mounted devices. Each Multiview system is based around the INSIGHT 4K HFR 360 projector, which delivers a massive 360 frames per second at native 4K resolution – enough for it to be able to send a different stereoscopic 3D image to each user simultaneously. One Multiview will enable ISE attendees to walk around a virtual object, move it around, and remove and replace component parts. The other system will feature content that one might encounter in a visitor attraction. Additionally, the VR at ISE feature will include an immersive VR theme park ride. Designed and run by Lightspeed Design, this DepthQ VR attraction will take attendees on an interactive fantasy ride through aquatic environments where they encounter touchable jellyfish,
a dolphin, and even the mythological world of the god Poseidon. The rider will sit in a Jaymar seat fitted with a D-Box motion base that works with three degrees of freedom. The DepthQ technology allows a game engine to tightly sync movement to picture in real time, and the rider can touch virtual objects naturally thanks to mid-air gesture technology. The VR mapped content will be projected onto a curved Vioso Panadome screen by Digital Projection hardware, so the rider will not need to wear a headset. Additional spectators, also on motion seats, can watch with head-mounted devices. VR at ISE will take place throughout ISE on Stands 14-B100 and 14-B120 in Hall 14
n THROUGHOUT THE SHOW IN FRONT OF HALL 2
Riding from Amsterdam to Barcelona – without leaving the RAI A charity virtual cycle ride at ISE 2020 will follow a route from Amsterdam to Barcelona. CEDIA volunteers Kris Hogg and Peter Aylett will host the cycle ride, which will aim to cover a mammoth 970 virtual miles over the four days of the show. “Taking inspiration from ISE’s move to Barcelona in 2021, we’ve mapped out a route from the RAI to the Fira de Barcelona,” says Hogg. “We’re hoping to see as many industry friends as possible supporting us and getting involved throughout the event – it’s set to be one heck of a ride!” The virtual bike ride will run throughout the week and will feature stationary bikes set up in front of Hall 2, as well as a set of display screens showing progress along the picturesque (and long) route. The ride will be in aid of JDRF, which funds research to cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes on a global scale. “Following CEDIA’s successful charity cycle rides in the past, we wanted to do something similar at ISE 2020,” he explains. “This fun new initiative will allow us to raise awareness of type 1 diabetes within our industry, as well as directly helping those who are affected.” Previous rides have raised thousands of pounds for Macmillan Cancer Support [pictured – Hogg is second from left] and the mental health charity Mind. For ISE 2020, Hogg and the team are calling for volunteers to join the
peloton and hope to put a team of riders together to tackle short sections of the route. There will be charity buckets on site to collect donations. If you are interested in taking part in the event and would like to find out more, please contact Kris Hogg and Peter Aylett at info@cedia.co.uk. The ISE 2020 virtual cycle ride will take place throughout ISE, in front of Hall 2 of the RAI

Goodbye and Hola! The RAI Amsterdam has been the location of every edition of Integrated Systems Europe since 2007, but this will come to an end with February’s show. To mark this milestone, a very special event on the last day of ISE 2020 will reflect on the development of ISE over the years while also looking forward to the next chapter of its story in Barcelona. Entitled Hola Barcelona!, the event will feature appearances from major Catalan and Spanish dignitaries, including Àngels Chacón, the Catalan Minister of Enterprise and Knowledge; and representatives of ACCIÓ, the Catalan Agency for Business Competitiveness; ICEX, the Spanish Institute of Foreign Trade; and the Fira de Barcelona, which will be the show’s new home. They will talk about the opportunities that ISE’s move to Barcelona will bring for attendees, exhibitors, the City of Barcelona and the AV industry as a whole. Presented by Integrated Systems Events Managing Director Mike Blackman, the event will also provide an opportunity for ISE, and its owners AVIXA and CEDIA, to say ‘goodbye
and thank you’ to the City of Amsterdam and the RAI, and acknowledge their important contributions to the show’s phenomenal growth. Specially commissioned video content will tell the story of ISE, starting with its first edition in Geneva in 2004. Hola Barcelona! is scheduled to last

Integrated Systems Europe 2020
A show for end-users
ISE’S BIGGEST EVER CONFERENCE LINE-UP End-users of AV solutions have been a growing part of the ISE attendee base for several years. End-users, in ISE’s terminology, are employed in the vertical market sectors for professional AV solutions – such as enterprise, education, live events, hospitality, retail and smart homes. They might have direct responsibility for operating, maintaining and eventually upgrading an AV solution – as part of an in-house AV, IT or facilities management team, for example. Alternatively, they might only become involved in specifying or selecting AV solutions when a specific project is being considered. This is in contrast to what we call the AV channel – the chain of technology suppliers that includes manufacturers, distributors, resellers, integrators and installers. As the professional AV industry has matured, end-users have become more knowledgeable about the capabilities of AV solutions, and more of them are coming to ISE. In parallel with this, ISE’s exhibitors have sought to reach end-users directly, aware of their increasing influence in shaping AV projects. In recognition of this ever-diversifying audience, ISE is offering an increasingly broad range of conferences – with no fewer than 13 taking place at ISE 2020. New end-user groups catered for this year include users of control rooms, and residential architects, interior designers and
design & build practitioners. While each conference has its own specific area of focus, they are all designed to give their attendees insight into the trends in technology, business environment and customer expectations that are shaping the future direction of their particular industry, and the opportunities that these changes afford. Over the following pages, you can read details of the full ISE 2020 conference programme.
n MONDAY 10 FEBRUARY AT THE HOTEL OKURA
Smart buildings: how much smarter can they get? Few would dispute the transformational impact of IP on the AV industry – but, as this year’s day-long Smart Building Conference ISE – with its theme of ‘5G, IoT and the Intelligent Edge’ – will demonstrate, that transformation is only one stage in a continuum. Building systems that were once disparate are increasingly converging into one smart system. Now, intelligent edge allows data to be analysed and acted on locally, minimising network traffic and latency – and that’s giving further impetus to the use of IoT. The introduction of 5G networks will only further galvanise this industry shift. Content chairman Bob Snyder returns to host Smart Building Conference ISE for the eighth year, while an extensive line-up of expert speakers will look to deliver a deeper understanding of the built environment and discuss real world case studies, including Amsterdam’s world famous EDGE Olympic building. They will also explore how the unfolding new technology landscape will be influential in the coming years in delivering buildings that not only increase efficiency and save money but also – importantly in a competitive employee recruitment and retention environment – provide an enjoyable

CONFERENCES 15
n MONDAY 10 FEBRUARY IN ROOM G103, RAI
Putting the listener back in focus Following the success of the 2019 edition of AudioForum, which discussed the relationship between sound reproduction, acoustics and psychoacoustics, the 2020 event will take a further step towards what organisers Connessioni, in co-operation with AES – Audio Engineering Society, have called Sound Democracy. The full-day event, which takes place the day before ISE 2020 opens, will guide participants along a path that examines the various aspects of Sound Democracy, including electroacoustic and acoustic (how to get sound to the listener's ears in the most efficient and effective way), psychoacoustic (subjective perception of sound), cognitive (from perception to streaming of the user's attention) and behavioural (cultural filters, mental patterns, beliefs that influence the user's perception). The programme of AudioForum@ISE 2020 has been conceived to involve both professionals with technical training, such as sound designers, system integrators and sound engineers, as well as those who come from the field of architectural and ambient design – architects, consultants, engineers, etc. It will also be of interest to anyone involved in managing venues and facilities, such as hotel managers, administrators of schools, universities, public spaces and sporting or cultural facilities.
The event will focus on a number of key subject areas, including the relationship between the environment, conditions and listening quality, audio technologies and the perception of sound, and environments, listening experiences and empathy. AudioForum@ISE 2020 takes place 09:30-16:30 on Monday 10 February in Room G103 – accessed from Entrance G – at the RAI Amsterdam. Control rooms: mission-critical AV Control rooms have long represented a fertile market for the AV industry – and with AVIXA’s IOTA research indicating an anticipated 5% CAGR in the coming years, it looks set to continue to do so. In recognition of the market’s significance, 2020 sees the inaugural Control Rooms Summit ISE, with its theme ‘How Better Integrated AV Will Save And Protect Lives’. Staged in association with the International Critical Control Rooms Alliance (ICCRA) and chaired by ICCRA Chairman Peter Prater, Control Rooms Summit ISE will review the role of the numerous AV technologies typically deployed in the control room environment – displays, networking, signal management (including KVM), surveillance video, sensors and analytics – and look at the increasing importance of ease of use. “Control rooms are becoming increasingly multifunctional, with more data types being routed into them and more technologies being integrated,” says Prater, whose 35-year career in the control rooms industry has seen him as a user and consultant and, currently, as Managing Director of supplier Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure UK. “This added complexity places greater demands on operators, so more design emphasis is being placed on human factors: ensuring that operators have
ergonomic workstations and intuitive user interfaces from which they can readily access all relevant information.” Expert presenters will discuss business and technology strategies for control rooms across a wide range of vertical markets, including utilities, transportation, government and public services. Also under review will be the
changing technology landscape, with delegates able to acquire a fuller understanding of what’s possible. Control Rooms Summit ISE takes place 09:00-13:00 on Tuesday 11 February at the Hotel Okura. For more information and to book, visit www.controlroomssummit.org

The business applications of XR technology With both the Oculus Rift VR headset and Pokémon Go AR game having been launched in 2016, there is a case for saying that XR (the collective term for VR, AR and mixed reality/MR) has been in the mainstream for fewer than four years. However, XR has the potential to be much more than a consumer toy: a recent report by Capgemini revealed that 82% of companies currently implementing AR/VR say the benefits are meeting/exceeding their expectations, while 46% of companies believe the technology will become mainstream in their organisations within the next three years. The theme of XR Summit ISE is ‘Shaping New Realities’, and the conference will explore the technologies, strategies and solutions that are creating an opportunity – and make the case that, above all, it is an opportunity for the audiovisual industry. “As an industry, systems integration is in the privileged position of being able to shape the future of XR technology and how it is integrated into real-world applications,” believes Amelia Kallman, a leading futurist, speaker and author who will chair the
XR Summit. “That’s especially true in the enterprise sector as companies look to use XR as a business tool in the diverse realms of virtual training and education, marketing and events, oil & gas, architectural and automotive applications.” Topics for discussion will include how integrators can make the most of the
opportunity, and developments in spatial audio, 5G, haptics and brain-computer interfaces. Speakers will include some of the finest minds operating in XR. XR Summit ISE 2020 takes place at 14:0018:00 on Tuesday 11 February at the Hotel Okura. For more details and to book, visit www.xr-summit.org

The third generation of digital signage If converting posters to screens was Digital Signage 1.0, and focusing on the importance of content was Digital Signage 2.0, then we are now in the era of Digital Signage 3.0. Digital Signage 3.0 is all about context: who is watching, when they are watching, where they are watching and why they are watching. Digital Signage Summit ISE 2020 will explore what that means to the customer journey and omni-channel engagement, and how personal, individual consumer experiences can be created and leveraged, and the challenges and opportunities it represents. It will look at the role of content management systems in a digital experience platform (DXP) world, and investigate the role that increasing integration with backend systems such as ERP and CRM will play. Digital Signage Summit ISE will also discuss how growth in what is already a substantial market is attracting major players – and how this in turn is expected to create opportunities for service providers of all sizes and capabilities. As well as providing a detailed overview of market data and dynamics, the conference will overview the latest developments in technology, hardware and software. Also featured will be best-in-class use cases from around the world.
With its theme of ‘The Future of Digital Signage – Technology, Platforms and Solutions’, Digital Signage Summit ISE promises to be unmissable for end-users, integrators and vendors alike. As previously, the conference will be hosted by Florian Rotberg, Chairman of the DSS series
and Managing Director of digital signage consultancy invidis. Digital Signage Summit ISE takes place at 09:00-13:00 on Wednesday 12 February at the Hotel Okura. For more details and to book, visit www.digitalsignagesummit.org/ise

Digital cinema: reinventing the movie theatre experience The experience of going to the cinema is changing. So too is the experience of watching movies. That’s not least because the two are no longer as tightly coupled as they once were. The advent of the likes of Netflix and Amazon means the latest blockbuster films are as likely to be watched at home – while digital cinema is transforming not just how movie theatres around the world operate, but the kinds of content they can offer to their customers. At Digital Cinema Summit ISE 2020, with its theme of ‘The Changing Cineplex’, top digital cinema practitioners and technology experts from around the world and from all parts of the motion picture distribution chain will discuss those changes – especially those happening in Europe. They will also explore and provide insights into how movie theatres are implementing those changes and profiting from them, as well as the new developments on the horizon.
Delegates can expect to understand more about whether movies still have centre stage at the cineplex; the impact of streaming; and what ‘event cinema’ – exhibitors are now offering gaming and esports in cinemas, where the experience is ten times bigger than anything available in the home – means for theatre owners, for Hollywood and for consumers. The conference will also offer an excellent venue for networking and the opportunity to establish new business connections in this ever-developing industry. Digital Cinema Summit ISE 2020 is produced in association with Digital Cinema Report and will be hosted by its Editor and Publisher, Nick Dager. AVIXA Women’s Council Event Wednesday 12 February, 15:30-17:30 With an opening address by Sarah Joyce, AVIXA Chief Global Officer, and a keynote from the Hon. Mrs Àngels Chacón, Minister for Business & Knowledge in the Catalan Government, the event will provide plenty of discussion points for inspiring, supporting and empowering women who work in the technology and AV industries. Mrs Chacón has much experience and enthusiasm to share: “Companies have amazing potential to transform society at all levels: unquestionably, we must create new female role models. That is why it is so important to have areas where female talent is shown, such as the one promoted with the AVIXA Women’s Council event.” Followed by a panel discussion and a chance to network with colleagues. ●●
Wellness and Biophilia ●● Thursday 13 February, 14:00-14:30 Virtual skylights, scenes of trees and streams, building design that includes ‘living walls’ literally made of plants, and expansive video scenes of sky and mountains are all solutions that can make for a better, more ‘human’ indoor experience. AV industry expert Julie Jacobson is a keen proponent of the concept of ‘biophilia’: the human tendency to interact with other forms of life in nature. In this session, she will discuss some of the different ways in which this desire can be satisfied – and the tremendous opportunities that this brings for integrators. Presented by CEDIA.
VR/AR/XR Friday 14 February, 10:30-11:30 XR, or extended reality, is an umbrella term that includes elements of AR, VR, and MR to make for a user experience unlike any other. Rich Green – a highend integrator in the San Francisco Bay area of the US and one of CEDIA’s most knowledgeable teachers – has been researching XR as well as the ‘spatial web’. Expect mind-blowing insights into XR’s impact on entertainment, assisted living, user interfaces and much more. ●●
How to Leverage Innovation to Create Better Experiences
What Do We Want? Better Meeting Rooms! The End User Support Group
Thursday 13 February, 10-30-11:00 Selim Morlevi is founder and CEO of Create-4, Turkey’s first experience marketing and innovation company. Much of what Create-4 does involves using the latest technology in display and AV to help big retailers and brands to create digital customer experiences via events, in-store or on-the-go. One notable Create-4 invention is Selfieccino, a machine that ‘prints’ selfies on cappuccino foam. Morlevi’s Main Stage session will stimulate your business with creative ideas, and perhaps inspire you to devise some off-the-shelf projects. You’ll also learn which technologies now capture the most interest, how they are used on the cutting edge, and how to improve the digital customer experience. Presented by ISE.
Friday 14 February, 11:30-12:00 This session is focused on how to create efficient meetings spaces in the government and corporate sectors. According to Antony Lovell of Shure, organisations looking to overcome their unique challenges around conducting efficient meetings should not simply adapt the latest technology. It’s better to take a step back and determine what the end customer would like to achieve; and the client often needs support choosing the appropriate technology for this. This session will show attendees how to understand clients’ audio and meeting management challenges and provide the appropriate solutions.
Mixed Reality in Theatre Productions
Friday 14 February, 13:30-14:00 The concept of a traditional workspace has changed. It now needs to be flexible and quickly adaptable to accommodate working styles and other requirements. Its use must also be measurable so we can be sure it is operating effectively. With new AV and IT technologies enabling greater mobility and collaboration, it’s now all about creating an environment – virtual or real – we can all work in. But how do we achieve this? What management and other tools are at our disposal? What approach should we take to make sure our workspace design and implementation works? Clive Couldwell, Group Editor of AV Magazine and Electronics Weekly, chairs an expert panel.
●●
Thursday 13 February, 11:00-11:30 The Imaginarium Studios will explore how immersive theatrical experiences can be created by bringing together performance capture and mixed reality. Established by renowned actor Andy Serkis, The Imaginarium is a global leader in the use of performance capture technologies in film, TV, video games and live theatre. More recently it has been exploring mixed reality through its content partnership with Magic Leap. Head of Production Glenn Kelly will share the experience of adapting performance capture to spatial computing and mixed reality platforms. Presented by AV Magazine. ●●

AV Career Day
DEVELOPING THE NEXT GENERATION OF AV TALENT AV Career Day aims to highlight the power of audiovisual experiences to students, and the many exciting career opportunities within the AV industry.
T
he AV industry is always looking for new and creative people to bolster its ranks. At ISE each year, leading trade associations AVIXA and CEDIA partner to host students and educators from around the world for a day exploring careers in this exciting industry. Students from across Europe will spend the day exploring the show floor, engaging with AV professionals and learning more about commercial and residential audiovisual technologies related to areas of academic study. Mike Blackman, Managing Director of Integrated Systems Events, comments: "We are very pleased to be supporting this initiative. The input from our co-owners AVIXA and CEDIA gives our AV Career Day a unique perspective into the huge array of career options that our industry offers. As the world's biggest and bestattended AV systems integration show, there's no better place than ISE to bring young people to show them the breadth of solutions that this industry creates and the markets that it serves. We look forward to growing our AV Career Day programme over the coming years.” “AV Career Day offers a chance for students, educators and community organisations to explore the AV industry at ISE 2020,” says Joseph Valerio, Program Director of the AVIXA Foundation. “Our primary objective is to promote greater awareness of AV careers, while also building bridges between schools and industry companies seeking new talent. We hope attendees will be inspired and see
themselves working in our dynamic industry.” “AV careers provide good opportunities for people who want a creative, yet challenging career that does not require a traditional college or university education,” comments Aneta Armova-Levin, CEDIA’s Education Manager. “ISE provides the perfect backdrop for students to find out about the career opportunities available to them in both the residential and commercial AV sectors.” Along with their faculty, students will get to see first-hand how AV professionals use the newest technologies to create incredible experiences in our daily lives. These events are designed for young people (16 years old and up) who are exploring career options and are not already in the AV industry. Some 200 students and faculty visited ISE 2019. Connections made at the event led to student internships and new pipelines for the companies involved. Participants were also connected with AVIXA training following the event. Many pro-AV jobs align with existing passions for students, in areas such as esports or video games, music and DJing, digital media and even graphic design. “On the residential side, the expansion of the home technology market is creating a growing demand for skilled labour, creating significant opportunities for the workforce of tomorrow,” Armova-Levin continues. “Students represent the future of our industry and we’re committed to providing resources to support the next
generation of home technology professionals. At AV Career Day, students can find out how current training opportunities, career pathways and course options can progress their career in the fast-developing world of AV. There is also the opportunity to network with other students on similar courses, as well as leading manufacturers during the guided show floor tours. We’re looking forward to welcoming students to this year’s AV Career Day programme at ISE 2020.” “We hear time and again a concern our members have is the need for more qualified personnel,” adds Valerio. “This is driven by the fact our industry is doing so well, bringing with it an increased opportunity for work. Employers can’t find enough talent to help meet that demand. On the other side of the equation, many young people aren’t aware AV is a viable career path. This isn’t much different in other skilled trades like nursing, HVAC, or construction; there’s still a side effect of stigma against the trades. While a traditional degree may be right for some, others are perfect for AV. We therefore want students to see that with a little training and some hard work, a person can make themselves very appealing to employers in this field. We hope through AV Career Day students open their eyes to the exciting possibilities awaiting them in AV.” AV Career Day takes place all day on Thursday 13 February at RAI Amsterdam. Participants have been invited via their schools, colleges and universities

ISE CONNECTIONS 29
Special Interest Groups
SPREADING THE WORD ABOUT ISE
I
SE’s Special Interest Groups programme involves working with partners in specific vertical markets to invite AV end-users to the show. Each group takes part in a tailored programme, which may include a show floor tour, presentations from selected exhibitors, and a networking reception or dinner. By running this programme, ISE extends its reach into key vertical markets and facilitates business for exhibitors that supply them. As well as bringing new technology buyers to the show, it also sends out a message to others in those sectors that ISE is a show for them. “Our Special Interest Group offers a professional development opportunity that wouldn’t necessarily be there otherwise,” comments Mark Dunlop from SCHOMS – a group of UK and Ireland university specialists focused on the technology within learning and teaching spaces. “The fact that it’s run as a hosted programme makes it affordable for universities who might not otherwise be able to send people.” Another long-established group organiser is AV-Solution Partner, a group of systems integrators from the DACH region, which brings around 150 AV end-users. Group leader Claus Lohse comments: “We start with four keynotes, talking about new technologies, challenges like IT security, and show interesting case studies of AV installations. Then we go to the show floor, where we visit the booths of our sponsors.” Members of the AV User Group are end-users of audiovisual systems and services from multiple vertical markets. Chairman Owen Ellis explains: “We organise short pitches from relevant key exhibitors. Our members find it very helpful to have this advance information on new product releases before they go out on the show floor – it helps them to make the most of their time and makes their visit more productive.” Based in Italy, the SIEC (Systems Integrated Experience Community) Association group is comprised of owners of architectural firms, senior architects, interior designers and project managers, in addition to end-users. Association VP Ennio Prase says: “Our group has a great interest in digital signage, entertainment and immersive audio and video solutions applied to the vertical markets they operate in. This group of professionals is mainly looking at inspiring applications and solutions.” The group organised by UK media brand PFM (Premises Facilities Management) features C-level executives, senior facilities managers
‘This is a great opportunity for us. We want to maximise the chances of contacting all the big players and the most innovative companies’ and outsourced building and estate managers working in corporate, government, retail and education. According to PFM Editor Dennis Flower, the group appreciates “the ability to meet with key technology and service providers relevant to the FM industry, ensuring our time is not wasted during the show.” Coming to ISE 2020 for the first time is a group from the British Institute of Interior Design, organised in partnership with CEDIA. Charlotte Davies, BIID Marketing Manager, comments that the programme “will give interior designers a rare and unique insight into the world of connected home technology, as well as an opportunity to build relationships with experts in the sector… It’s important for designers to have the knowledge, skills and understanding of how they can include and conceal technology seamlessly into their interior design schemes.” With ISE moving to Barcelona in 2021, two Special Interest Groups from that city will be attending ISE 2020 for the first time. Media brand Grupo eventoplus is organising a group comprising production managers of large
event agencies. Director General Eric Mottard explains what he is looking forward to seeing: “Impactful projections and amazing resolutions of image solutions are always of interest to this group, but mobile displays – motorised or even robot-powered solutions which create dynamic possibilities – are especially hot now.” ACCIO, part of government body Catalonia Trade & Investment, is organising a group of representatives from sectors including lighting, smart buildings and hotels. Joan Romero, CEO of Catalonia Trade & Investment, comments: “Issues like digital content, digital signage, new business models have been and will be the interest of Catalan companies, as well as emerging trends that affect any innovative sector such as cybersecurity, 5G connectivity, smart homes, etc.” He makes an observation which chimes with the feelings of many of the other group organisers: “This is a great opportunity for us. We want to maximise the chances of contacting all the big players and the most innovative companies and get them to be a big asset of the exhibition in the future.”

Association Overview
THE EVOLUTION OF THE PRO-AV INDUSTRY The AV industry has changed immeasurably in the past five years and as the experience economy grows, it shows no signs of slowing, says David Labuskes, CTS, Chief Executive Officer, AVIXA.
I
ntegrated Systems Europe (ISE) will say “vaarwel” to Amsterdam when the 2020 show closes on 14 February. ISE first came to Amsterdam in 2005, after making its debut in Geneva, Switzerland, the previous year. To say the show has grown up over these 16 years would be an understatement. What began with 120 exhibitors and 3,500 attendees has grown to 1,300 exhibitors and 81,000 attendees. And with this success we acknowledged that our future must be different from our past. We needed to transform yet again. And, to do that, we needed a new home. Hola Barcelona (2021)! And of course, me being me, the evolution of the show got me thinking about the evolution of the professional AV industry as a whole. Since just 2015, the pro-AV industry worldwide has gone from generating $194.4 billion to $247 billion in 2019. And AVIXA is forecasting the industry will reach $325 billion in 2024. What’s spurring this growth? A large impact is the ‘experience economy’. The term was first used in a Harvard Business Review article back in 1998, where B Joseph Pine II and James H Gilmore stated that “an experience occurs when a company intentionally uses services as the stage, and goods as props, to engage individual customers in a way that
creates a memorable event." This really does eloquently explain what we create. AV professionals and our clients work together to conceptualise experiences and assemble the perfect mix of AV technology to deliver them. AV has the power to transform work places, concerts, sporting events, corporate conferences, travel, retail and so many other experiences.
Avant-Garde Applications
We’re seeing more and more avant-garde applications of technology at live events. On a world stage like the Olympics or the World Cup, the show must be a spectacle for both in-person attendees and for viewers around the world – think turf illuminating to show the various countries’ flags as one example. Once the magic of projection mapping caught the hearts of audiences, it became a must-have for major live events. But audiences don't only want to be left in awe, they want to actively participate in the event. Now fans are becoming a part of the game experience by posting photos on social media, which in turn are broadcast on the displays in the stadium and to viewers’ TVs in their homes. That’s bragworthy. The AV industry keeps evolving because of you. The integrators, designers, manufacturers, distributors and technology managers. You’re
determined to take us farther and faster. And what’s really cool is how this evolution of the industry is transforming all of us. Our work, our thinking, even the value we deliver, it’s all changing and changing us. What an exciting time! At this breakneck pace, it’s critical to take time to learn from each other. The thousands of people who will gather together at ISE to meet new people and learn about new products and solutions are a clear testament to how much pride you take in bettering yourself and your profession. You know what else demonstrates that commitment? There are over 12,000 Certified Technology Specialists (CTS) globally – 1,000 in Europe alone. I know there should be thousands more (and will be). Maybe you should be one of them? Where is the industry headed? I think the experience economy’s momentum will intensify in the years to come. To lure people from the comfort of their homes and the convenience of making purchases online, companies must differentiate the experience. I challenge you to run with that idea. Wow them. I already see you doing it. Enjoy your time at ISE 2020. Thank you to the city of Amsterdam for making us feel at home all these years. Let’s make this last show here one for the books.

AVIXA Research
EYES ON EMEA – FORECASTING THE MARKET By Sean Wargo, Senior Director of Market Intelligence, AVIXA
A
VIXA works with leading global research firms to collect, analyse and report on emerging markets, current and future product sales, end-user buying habits, and the macro-trends impacting the pro-AV industry. Its latest Industry Outlook and Trends Analysis (IOTA) report is a comprehensive pro-AV market study encompassing the global economic outlook and its implications for the AV industry. Here I share some of the latest findings and key takeaways from the report, looking specifically at developments in the EMEA region.
Overall AV Industry Focus
The total pro-AV industry in Europe and the Middle East was $64 billion in 2018. This is expected to swell to $67 billion in 2019 and increase to more than $85 billion in 2024, representing an almost 5.0% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) and $18 billion in additional value. Western Europe dominates the region in revenue – this subregion alone is expected to reach $32.5 billion in revenue by 2024, accounting for more than a third of all revenue
in EMEA. Regions in Africa will see the highest growth, with Sub-Saharan Africa expected to see a 6.3% CAGR, while the Middle East and North Africa is expected to grow 7.2%. Contrastingly, Scandinavia will grow slower than the rest of EMEA. While countries in this region recover from a shrinking economy, AVIXA estimates a CAGR of 3.4% from 2019-24 for pro-AV.
Market Focus
The corporate market is the single largest application area for pro-AV products and services, capturing $14.5 billion in revenues in EMEA in 2019. The industry accounts for 22% of revenue in the region. The EMEA region’s corporate vertical is benefitting from the deployment of cloud solutions, videoconferencing systems, capture and production systems, and video cameras. While representing a smaller revenue opportunity, cinema is expected to grow at the fastest rate of all verticals in the region, rising at 9.9% from 2019 to 2024. Within the region’s cinema vertical, standalone software revenue will generate the most growth, rising by 144.5% from 2019 through 2024. The market

Key Themes
There are four key themes emerging from the report: GDP growth. Though some storm clouds may exist in parts of the world or are looming in others, the broad trend is towards widespread GDP growth. While pro AV is not wholly dependent on this growth, it provides the fertile ground in which the industry can grow. Why? Pro AV provides solutions to nearly all facets of the economy and so its own fate is tied to the overall fate of global and local economies. This means pro-AV revenues boom during periods of growth and are challenged during recession. AV over IP. Long-term industry followers have been watching the increasing overlap between AV and IT for quite some time. At the core of this, is the expanding usage of IP networks for the carriage of AV-related content and command signals. Such usage has facilitated an explosion of products at the endpoints of networks in the form of digital signage and media servers to support that. Increasing digital signage requires additional back end to feed the hungry displays, hence an increase in servers and storage supported by IP networks for distribution. Rise of services. Commoditisation and price declines are also part of a long-term trend within the technology sector. Pro AV is no exception. Some hardware categories are particularly hard hit by this, such as the display market. And yet, falling hardware cost does encourage proliferation and creative application, as evidenced by the rise of digital signage in many markets. It also provides an opportunity for differentiation through value-added services as companies seek well-integrated solutions that work and provide exceptional experiences to the ultimate end users, the consumers. Display proliferation. As mentioned, commoditisation has been a rampant and ever-present theme within the display market. The supply chain tends to mature quickly, and prices fall as a result. This pushes adoption faster than most might expect. Direct-view LED is the latest technology to exhibit the same, following in the footsteps of largely deprecated flat-panel technologies like LCD. Integrated Systems Europe 2020
Association Overview
CEDIA LOOKS BACK ON 30 YEARS By Tabatha O’Connor, CEDIA’s Global President & CEO
T
his past year, 2019, marked the 30th year of CEDIA. It has been a busy, exciting and productive year for us, with initiatives to celebrate the accomplishments of our members and the global impact of the organisation. Now, more than half-way through our three-year strategic plan, we’ve made significant steps forward in the key areas of education, workforce development, and deeper engagement and partnership with the design and build community.
Education
The long-term health of the home technology industry is dependent upon a well-trained and professional workforce. That’s why we have been focusing on ways to develop our educational pathways to ensure that industry professionals can be at the top of their game. In 2019, we have expanded our education offering to more countries across the globe, making it easier for our regional members to benefit from our training programmes. We hosted a European roadshow for The CEDIA Designer (TCD) software, designed to give home technology professionals the opportunity to learn more about the capabilities and benefits of the software in their own local language. We also hosted Tech Summits in Sydney and Melbourne, Mexico City and Mumbai, along with a full programme in the UK and North America, to deliver practical business development and a valuable networking platform for all involved in the industry. Our biggest and best attended Tech Summit ever in India took place in August, which provided a fantastic three days of high-quality training and networking. The event welcomed 120 attendees, nearly double the highest attendance of any previous Tech Summit, representing a grand total of 68 companies from across India. To that end, in the fast-growing market of India, we appointed Roopesh Shah as Regional Development Consultant to support members in the region. CEDIA’s in-person and online industry
training and certification offerings will expand in the years ahead. Not only in terms of coursework, but also in terms of the ways that technology integrators can interact with CEDIA and engage in training opportunities. 2020 is set to see even more international training take place, beginning at ISE 2020, of course! We’ve also been actively engaged in the revisions of four standards and recommended best practices, including the Home Theatre Recommended Practice, the Audio, Video, and Control best practice, and Architectural Drawing Symbols Standard. These resources provide our members with industry-specific knowledge and information on technical disciplines. So far in 2019, we’ve also published five new white papers: Quality of Light in the Home; The Integrator’s Guide to Video: Resolution; Securing the Residential Network; Infrastructure Cabling for Voice, Data, and Video; and The Integrator's Guide to Video: Colorimetry. To download a copy of these white papers visit cedia.net.
Workforce Development
We’re dedicated to raising awareness of our industry as a career opportunity among jobseekers. As part of this initiative, we’ve been busy developing the Smart Home Technician Apprenticeship standard this year, to encourage
young professionals into the industry. This standard will put more control in the hands of employers, ensure that apprentices are qualifying with the right skills and knowledge, and address skills shortages facing the industry, as well as attracting new prospective professionals. In addition, CEDIA’s Smart Home Technician and Smart Home Designer tracks are accredited by City & Guilds, a renowned awarding body. City & Guilds evaluates externally accredited training against a comprehensive benchmark that has been developed from over 130 years of experience in managing quality systems and training courses. This gives CEDIA’s introductory training both heightened visibility and credibility among new entrants. We’re also encouraging existing CEDIA members to develop and be the best that they can be. Our new CEDIA Member of Excellence Programme is designed to recognise and affirm those member companies that are consistently dedicated to excellence. There are two designations CEDIA members can achieve to demonstrate their company’s commitment to their clients, investing in professional development and technical excellence, and serving their community – CEDIA Advanced Member and CEDIA Member of Excellence. We’re delighted with the response so far – globally, we already have over 20 CEDIA Advanced Members and Members of Excellence benefiting from the programme.

The Design and Build Community
We are continuing our outreach to the design and build community, raising the profile of CEDIA members among interior designers, architects, specifiers and other design professionals to help build their business on strong foundations for the future. To this end, more members are now progressing through the CEDIA Certified Outreach Instructor (COI) programme than ever before. This training gives members the tools they need to present and be an effective educator to design and build specifiers. In 2019, we launched a new Continuing Professional Development (CPD) training course for design and build professionals on Designing Home Cinemas and Media Rooms. This CPD is tailored to help architects, interior designers and property developers understand how to help clients choose and specify rooms, as well as the design principles needed for a

AUDIO & LIVE EVENTS
Visitors to the Audio & Live Events Technology Zone during ISE will gain the broadest perspective of audio technologies and the growing business opportunities in all applications across the thriving systems integration sector. In fact, audio will be a more prominent feature than ever at ISE 2020. Words: Joao Martins, Editor-in-Chief, audioXpress

ccording to the 2019 AV Industry Outlook and Trends Analysis (IOTA) Global Summary produced by AVIXA, opportunities in the audio sector are being fuelled by sustained demand for systems in all installation segments, including the corporate market. Despite near-term economic challenges, the overall AV market in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) is expected to grow at 4.5% annually through to 2024, and will capture the largest percentage of revenue for audio equipment, overtaking the Americas in this segment. The EMEA region is also responding to stagnating macroeconomic predictions with increased investments, as governments, institutions and companies recognise the need to improve infrastructure efficiency and sustainability. Today, audio technologies and solutions for installed applications deliver a foundational blueprint, and are not only one of the highest growth segments, they're also one of the more innovative. Networking, signal processing and control, along with the convergence between professional audio and consumer technologies, are creating an exciting landscape that inspires the whole systems integration industry. In 2020, expect ISE to once again be flooded with literally thousands of network-enabled products, in particular Dante/AES67-enabled solutions. This is a decisive moment to see how the industry embraces the integrated AVover-IP approach, and which manufacturers will be able to add standards-based video signal transport over existing audio-overIP platforms. Look for improved latency in conferencing applications, and interoperability with Dante AV and the SMPTE ST-2110 suite of standards. And, to address the full potential of networking AV applications, expect manufacturers to promote multiple options for control, monitoring and management capabilities, particularly for device discovery. This is a critical area for audio infrastructures and a way to better understand different network topologies in deployment. When seeking audio solutions, ISE 2020 attendees will also find a larger than ever number of loudspeaker manufacturers. Precisely because of the exciting possibilities in managing zones and remote monitoring,
‘In 2020, expect ISE to once again be flooded with literally thousands of network-enabled products’ speaker companies are increasingly looking to deliver power and audio signals via standard network cables. But things are about to get even more exciting, as speakers are gaining ‘intelligence’ and will be able to offer calibration and acoustic sensing capabilities. So look for loudspeakers with not only network inputs, but also sensors and microprocessors. Of course, ISE provides a wide scope of audio installation options that support multiple requirements, from simple constant-voltage distributed audio systems to high-power, high-quality PA solutions. It is a demand met by new specialised beamforming speakers, to large-sized distributed array structures for large venues. Also, look out for new and innovative
form-factors, including pendant-type and ‘invisible’ ceiling tile solutions, as well as more sophisticated wavefield synthesis arrays, providing a unique solution for highly selective coverage and the most challenging acoustic environments. And, of course, there is the latest trend of spatial audio – or immersive sound – which, after taking live performance, corporate presentations and even touring applications by storm, is now starting to make inroads in fixed installations. And with connected speakers and amplifiers with fully integrated digital signal processing, remote monitoring and integrated web servers, comes increasing integration towards online and cloud-based remote servicing.

DIGITAL SIGNAGE & DOOH
With significant market growth expected in the coming years and continuous innovation the norm, this is one zone not to miss at ISE 2020. Words: Llanor Alleyne, Editor, AVNation Media
P
ropelled by increased demand from end-user industries such as retail and healthcare, the global digital signage market is anticipated to grow to $31.71 billion by 2025. This positive forecast, issued by ResearchandMarkets.com last July, is driven by increased digital signage content creation and distribution underpinning promotional strategies within the growth industries where digital signage will increasingly be used to reach wider audiences. “Digital signage is becoming the rising star of the pro-AV industry,” said Sean Wargo, Senior Director of Market Intelligence, AVIXA, whose 2019 IOTA: Industry Outlook and Trends Analysis points to similar market growth areas. “Thanks in part to the increasing affordability of displays, businesses across a large number of industries are adding digital signs as a way of better communicating with customers and workers. This includes everything from offices with screens in lobbies to large transportation hubs or venues needing larger screens for traveller or audience engagement. All of this demand is pushing digital signage into the top spot as the largest solution area within pro AV over the next five years.” The quest to create more effective promotional strategies has seen the increased use of multi-screen displays and video walls in digital signage applications, including in DooH, large venues and commercial spaces. Price drops in LCD and LED displays coupled with better performing infrastructure technologies such as media players, controllers and easyto-use software have made multi-screens and video walls more attractive and affordable options for end users, allowing them to go beyond one-off campaigns to more frequent advertising models. In the retail sector especially, where cuttingedge digital signage is constantly innovating, the recent introduction of retail analytics platforms, both from display manufacturers and independent software developers, is situating digital advertising as the way forward for online and bricks-and-mortar retailers alike – and in many instances, helping them bridge the gap between their online and physical stores with unified and interactive experiences. Featuring real-time data collection and bespoke customer interfacing that actively gives retailers information about their customers, retail
‘Digital signage is becoming the rising star of the pro-AV industry’ analytics is a game-changing ROI tool. Across sectors, interactive digital signage offers a new level of customer engagement that, along with retail analytics, is redefining advertising. With augmented reality and virtual reality maturing and evolving into real-world applications while maintaining a futuristic aura, and voice control and haptic touch breaking out of the confines of their mobile tech origins, the use of these technologies in interactive digital signage offers new approaches to audience reach that can also be employed in non-traditional digital signage areas, including social media and gaming. As digital signage establishes deeper roots in the AV channel, there is a growing convergence between the two that is reflected in the networking and content creation side of the
business. As IoT slowly establishes itself as the norm, digital signage’s marriage with IoT offers direct access to customers’ devices, such as smartphones and appliances, allowing for more focused and targeted messaging. However, the most simple and obvious overlap is with integrators themselves. As with the best, most effective AV systems, digital signage requires professional installation and ongoing customer support. AV integrators looking to grow their business are more frequently becoming experts on everything digital signage, including choosing the best displays, creating strong networking systems to handle signage-heavy applications, and creating and maintaining bespoke content that, along with a long-term investment in the hardware, also provides ongoing investment in the expert who made it all possible.

EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY
AV in the classroom has been the norm for some years, but the possibilities it brings to both teachers and learners are continuing to increase, and government commitment to edtech investment is boosting interest. Words: Terry Freedman, education technology journalist, trainer and consultant
W
hen it comes to the global pro-AV market, the education sector, and especially higher education, is a major growth area. A 2019 industry report indicated high use of, and spending on, display technology in education. This should come as no surprise given AVIXA’s finding that almost 90% of students have AV technology in their classroom. Why is there so much interest in this technology? A significant factor is the commitment to education technology on the part of local and central governments. Also, schools and universities are keen to reduce costs through improvements in efficiency, meaning that features such as remote maintenance are important. The reduction in price differentials between interactive whiteboards and flat screen technology makes the latter more attractive. Arguably even more important is the fact that recent developments in technology make it far easier to implement popular forms of pedagogy, such as flipped learning. A well-known anecdote is that if a time traveller from the 15th century found herself in a 21st century classroom, she would feel right at home. After all, she will discover that the classroom has desks, and a board at the front, where the teacher shows information. But the similarities are really quite superficial. Take the board. There’s a good chance it will not only be an interactive whiteboard or flat screen panel, but it will also be able to be split into two or three separate areas. That allows for two or three groups of students to work at the same time, perhaps on different things. Indeed, many screens now have 20 touch points as standard, while recent refinements in the technology mean that a few offer 30 or even 60. Moreover, recent developments have made the screens much more responsive to touch, meaning that the disconcerting time lag between writing something and it appearing on the screen is now a thing of the past. Even gesture recognition is often now included. The same screen will be able to display work from several students’ devices at the same time, enabling the whole class to compare solutions. In the other direction, the teacher will be able
‘Recent developments in technology make it far easier to implement popular forms of pedagogy, such as flipped learning’ to send a document or presentation to every student’s device, or to just one. All-in-one screens mean that a separate laptop or computer is no longer necessary, and neither is a projector. This saves time setting up. Indeed, a recent development is that of NFC (near field communication) capability. This enables a teacher to instantly set up a screen with the right configuration for that particular class, and to leave it clean for the next class – without needing to touch the board itself at all. And desks? A few of them could well be interactive tables at which groups of ten or more students work at the same time. Collaboration within a classroom is facilitated by multitouch screens and tables, but what about between classrooms? Screens with builtin microphones and a camera make it possible to have professional-level video conferencing between classrooms in schools thousands of miles apart. Gone are the days when the whole class had to huddle around one computer! Flipped learning, in which the teacher or lecturer records a session so that students can
watch it later, is now more plausible than it was even a short time ago. Lecture recording facilities may be found in the lecturer’s lectern. The talk could even be broadcast to screens in other parts of the campus while it is in progress. On the subject of the lectern, it may also include a document camera, enabling the lecturer to display the pages of a book or a physical object without having to worry about pairing up the camera with the screen. The flexibility in sizes of display devices, together with a marked increase in their robustness, make them popular not only for use in a classroom environment but also for digital signage around the campus. Finally, when software needs updating or equipment needs fixing, the technical support team can do everything without leaving their office. This brief article has really only scratched the surface – even though the surfaces we’ve discussed tend to be scratch-resistant! Visit the Education Technology Zone at ISE 2020, located in Hall 13, and prepare to be astonished.

RESIDENTIAL
As interest in multiroom and smart home innovation wanes, will 5G and 8K pick up the slack at ISE 2020? Words: Steve May, freelance AV journalist
H
igh-speed 5G, a shift to 8K for superlarge TVs and ubiquitous immersive audio look set to be the key trends in residential systems technology for 2020. According to Size & Scope research commissioned by CEDIA, released a few months ago, the UK residential technology systems market is worth close to £700 million annually. Some 80% of trade respondents hope to boost revenue further by the time ISE 2020 rolls around. But what will boost that growth? Perhaps the technology offering the greatest potential for growth is 5G? There’s certainly a lot of political muscle driving service development. The UK government, for example, has freed up £200 million for testing its 5G rollout as part of a digital connectivity development strategy. One-fifth of this, £40 million, will be focused on trials and logistical projects. Seen as disruptive rather than evolutionary, 5G offers higher connection speeds, greater capacity and lower latency. More importantly, top line consumer benefits are easily understood. Not only does 5G have the potential to dramatically improve streaming speeds for OTT service providers such as Netflix and Amazon, it has bandwidth and speed to deliver completely wireless VR (a previous darling of the tech sector which has so far failed to fly with consumers, PlayStation VR notwithstanding). 5G could also solve the content impasse that’s slowing down interest in 8K consumer televisions, particularly when combined with advanced compression technologies. According to IHS Markit data, 8K remains a difficult sell. Japanese and Chinese brands are taking a cautious approach because of content issues. Only Japan is broadcasting 8K content, driven by the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Olympics. However, an 8K display with integrated 5G module would allow a TV to stream high bandwidth 8K at breakneck speed, effectively sidestepping traditional broadband networking limitations. There’s no such caution when it comes to 4K. UHD TV sales have exploded over the past year, with forecasts suggesting that 63% of all Western Europe TV shipments are now 4K models.
‘5G could solve the content impasse that’s slowing down interest in 8K consumer televisions’ This success continues to drive interest in versatile wall mounts and waterproof/wetroom display solutions, as well as 2160/60-capable 4K signal distribution and HDBaseT solutions. When it comes to state of the art in residential audio, Dolby Atmos is leading the way. It’s de rigueur for home theatre installations, and even smaller media rooms. Dolby Atmos has transformed the way movies are mixed for theatrical release. As the format is object- rather than channel-based, sound designers are able to steer elements in a scene individually, rather than simply pan sounds between channels. The result is a stunning level of precision. Atmos is also driving a boom in architectural loudspeakers, which can be built in-wall or in-ceiling, or even plastered over, and highperformance floorstanders. Visitors to ISE 2020 should also expect to see continuing simplification in control solutions, as the public perception of how smart tech should look is filtered through the lens of mainstream platforms such as Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. The days of self-aggrandising home automation are coming to an end. End-users no longer want to see how the magic happens.
Instead, the user experience is king, with interfaces that can be customised for a more personal touch (for example, photos of actual rooms replacing bald labels). Touchscreens need to offer flair as well as function. More importantly, integrators are migrating to control solutions that offer fast, trouble-free deployment, a significant virtue when it comes to smaller residential projects. The big winners in this shift will likely be smart home solutions that no longer demand programming skills. Expect also a new, humanistic approach to lighting control, where illumination meets wellbeing, in order to provide a comfortable environment for both workers and homeowners. Lighting systems that better integrate with eco-centric power sources, to reduce energy usage, are also certain to gain traction over the coming months. Not only are users more sensitive to their carbon footprint, but integrators need to be aware of changing energy legislation. New regulations proposed for September 2020 will impose a minimum efficiency of 85 lumens per watt and a maximum standby power of 0.5W on all light sources to be sold in the EU.

SMART BUILDING
An occupant-centric approach to building design looks set to dominate at ISE 2020 as the next generation of high-tech buildings begin to emerge. Words: Bob Snyder, Editor-in-Chief, Channel Media Europe, and Smart Building Conference Content Chairman
F
or anyone working in the built environment, the building is the environment that encompasses us – and that environment changes dramatically as smart technologies reflect digital disruption in the building market. Visiting the Smart Building Zone in Hall 9 is the key to anticipating changes - and finding business opportunities. While commercial building automation dominates the sector, visitors will find some overlap with the smart home and smart office. Yet, no matter which segment, it’s clear that (just as business now shifts to a customer-centric model) buildings, offices and homes will shift to occupant-centric. It’s not that property owners, landlords and developers matter less: instead, occupantcentric is their clearly marked route to better business in a competitive landscape that demands added value. The Smart Building Zone is for those interested in the smart disruption in building control and automation: IoT, smart sensors, software, IT networking, air conditioning, lighting & shutter control, security, heating & ventilation, monitoring, alarm & safety, water control, energy, metering, smart office and more. One of the anchor exhibitors is KNX, once again a Presenting Show Partner for ISE. In a pan-European survey by BSRIA, KNX is not only the most popular protocol in most European markets but reached 50% as an average European market share. Highlights to be shown at ISE include its latest IoT functionality, KNX Secure, and the latest version of its Engineering Tool Software. (Read more from KNX on page 70.) Experts predict double-digit growth through 2025. More telling is that 2019 is already a record year for global start-up investment in smart buildings. The first half-year ended strongly with 161 fundings for $1,799 million. Smart money follows smart buildings. And our industry follows the money. Energy costs always drive concerns in the building industry, but the new interest in ‘proptech’ also comes from the needs of commercial real estate (attracting and holding tenants) and facility managers (reacting to significant changes in modern work and workplace). Let’s not forget security: in this zone, you’ll
‘2019 is already a record year for global start-up investment in smart buildings’ also find interconnected fire detectors, security cameras and security checks for building access – and even digital security for the building networks and control systems. IoT and sensor tech will enable organisations to understand the usage of desks, meeting rooms, floors or building spaces. We can now design and manage complex office environments using data. Some sensors measure body heat and motion to detect presence, while environmental sensors might sample noise, temperature, air and lighting. Clearly IoT brings smart buildings a dynamic ecosystem of max connectivity, creating new use cases. The next generation of high-tech buildings combines six fundamental technologies – more powerful computers, advanced broadband, new wireless communications, next-gen IT networks, internet appliances and integrated building information systems – and IoT to connect devices and sensors across various smart building systems, enabling them to communicate, collect data at the network’s edge and report to a dashboard in an office or in the cloud. The idea of connecting a building to the internet to manage everything – from the security system to lighting to window blinds
to the parking garage – is no longer a fantasy and you can see it in Hall 9 at ISE. While we know now a robust digital cellular connectivity infrastructure impacts tenant satisfaction – the upcoming 5G is 100 times faster (with lower latency, better bandwidth) and WiFi 6 will improve each user’s average speed by “at least four times” in congested building areas. The next generation draws from all these technologies to offer further digital amenities: digital signage, in-building intranets, digital conference rooms, state-of-the-art video conferencing services and presentation equipment. All are on view in Hall 9. The future of buildings hinges on the integration of systems, wireless management, IoT connectivity and new systems diagnostics making a huge opportunity for industry professionals (as a service or as a sale) to monitor, integrate and lower costs for building owners, landlords and tenants. The Smart Building Zone will show you the newest products in the built environment, but the real discovery will be how occupant-centric models of smart building create the need for property owners, landlords, developers, facility managers, architects and consultants to join in the world’s biggest show for system integration.

UNIFIED COMMUNICATIONS
As more and more organisations see the benefits unified communications can bring, the sector continues to evolve and grow. AI, 5G and big data will all be up for discussion on the showfloor. Words: Ian McMurray, Contributing Editor, Installation
D
efining the unified communications (UC) market has become progressively more difficult over time. From its original, fairly simplistic, definition back in the 1990s, when the term first arose – the combination and convergence of messaging and real-time communications, such as telephony – it’s gradually morphed into something altogether more all-embracing. It’s no surprise, then, to see some impressive growth figures. According to AVIXA’s latest IOTA: Industry Outlook and Trends Analysis report, it’s currently worth some $45 billion and is growing at over 3% per year. Other market research puts the size/ growth of the market even higher. How has it changed? Well: first, it now encompasses the concept of collaboration (thus the rise of unified communications and collaboration – UCC – as a term). In fact, anecdotally, that’s where much of the growth has come from. Increasingly, organisations have examined how well they communicate – internally and externally – to find out whether there is the opportunity for competitive edge. The conclusion? Yes, there is. UC/UCC facilitates a collaborative style of decision making that delivers better, faster outcomes and decisions. That it is shown to increase productivity and reduce costs – such as travel – are almost incidental benefits. Those same organisations have also realised that millennials now comprise the majority of the workforce – and collaboration is their preferred way of working. They also prefer flexible working – increasingly, from home. UC/UCC has become about employee engagement – and retention. That in turn has seen the rise of the now-ubiquitous huddle room. Here, the interactive whiteboard is still largely omnipresent, at the heart of wireless sharing of files, annotation of diagrams and, with appropriate cameras and microphones, allowing face-to-face interaction with remote participants. Today, the UC/UCC market is characterised by a remarkable diversity of platforms and technologies. Of most note, in recent times, has been the rise of UCaaS – unified communications as a service – with smart resellers, who might traditionally only have sold the room, increasingly offering it. As in so many environments, the cloud is now ubiquitous. UCaaS is itself transmogrifying into CPaaS;
‘The shift to cloud and software-based solutions is perhaps the largest trend in the category today’ communications platform as a service. “The shift to cloud and software-based solutions is perhaps the largest trend in the category today,” notes Sean Wargo, AVIXA’s Senior Director of Market Intelligence. “Hardware still plays a role, since we still need cameras, microphones, displays and speakers on either end of a connection, but a higher percentage of the value is being captured in the collaboration tools. Integrators are trying to stay in front of this by helping to ensure the space and technology are optimised.” From the executive video conferencing suite through to “let’s hold a meeting right here” spaces, the coming year will be a fascinating one for UC/UCC – and all the more reason to be at ISE. First, there’s the increasingly plugand-play nature of the technology – which, with reducing prices, is opening up UC/UCC to smaller and smaller customers. That’s being somewhat expedited by manufacturer realisation that we like our work technology to look and feel like our personal technology. There’s also much talk of – and no less scepticism about – the potential role of AI in improving user experiences, with one major
supplier talking about ‘cognitive collaboration’, enabled by big data and analytics and providing every participant with everything they might want to know about every other participant. With increasing numbers of the workforce now remote from the office, there’s also much discussion of the potentially transformative impact of 5G networks – which will make 4K video available to all those involved in the meeting, wherever they are. What’s really expanding the market, however, is the redefinition of ‘unified’. Where once, UC/ UCC was all about internal communications – whether within a building or from site to site – attention is now focusing on how communication with external entities, such as customers, can be facilitated. Receiving no less attention is how UC/UCC can be integrated with – and so become an extension of – existing workflows, an enhancement to today’s applications. Helping people communicate has long been a key application for the AV industry. The industry’s challenge is how it adapts to the increasingly strategic, mission-critical nature of communications in all its forms.

Impact Series expands to include floor-mounted solutions
Award-winning Tempo System eliminates site surveys
Impact Floor Mounted Kiosks provide an aesthetic solution for enclosing displays in open areas. The exclusive design keeps the display mounted to the hinge side of the door for full access and survivability. Keyed locking security keeps displays safe, and a universal AV storage plate holds supporting equipment. The kiosks will be available for a variety of display sizes in a black or white finish to complement a variety of environments. Also, Impact Floor Mounted Kiosks are available in a single-sided as well as a back-to-back display version. The solution joins the Impact On-Wall Kiosk and maintains the same sleek aesthetic. The On-Wall Kiosk’s depth-adjustable exterior frame allows for a variety of display sizes, while reversible hinges help to avoid installation and service obstructions.
The Tempo Flat Panel Floor Support System allows quick flat panel installation by using the floor to support the weight instead of the wall. This eliminates the need for wall inspection and remediation, which saves time and money, particularly across enterprise rollouts. Chief engineers created a smart lowprofile system that can easily be integrated over existing outlets or other obstructions on site, while keeping the flat panel placement precisely where the system designer wants it. The lower section houses an included component storage panel and leaves room for an additional panel or rack storage. The lower cover can be customised to match surrounding carpet or wall finishes.

Digital Projection
Versatile Satellite MLS on show Digital Projection will present the Satellite MLS: simple building blocks that allow users to address a wide range of applications. The keystone of this new system is the separation of the light source, with its associated power and thermal management, to a remote location, which enables a small, compact projection ‘Head’ that only contains the minimal optical and video processing. The projector Head is fundamentally compact, quiet, lightweight and consumes very little power. This offers huge benefits at every stage of a system design, from transportation and installation to serviceability and lifespan. By separating the projection Head from the light source and linking the two by robust and flexible fibre-optic cables up to
100m long, this latest innovation offers the installer more options, particularly where space and access are restricted. STAND: 1-F90

Key questions to ask before you choose an AV-over-IP platform There are critical differences between AVover-IP products on the market. Here’s a quick guide to what to look for – and what to avoid. Does it support ALL video sources you might encounter? LOOK FOR: 4K60 4:4:4, Deep Color, HDR10, plus support for lower resolutions, frame rates and interlaced video. AVOID: Products that support only lesser variations of the 4K60 spec. (And be wary of manufacturer claims that support is forthcoming.)
What’s the overall latency from source to display? LOOK FOR: Latency of less than 1 frame, critical in the workplace and in gaming. AVOID: Products that don’t support spec claims. (It’s always good practice to put new products to the test first.) What type of network infrastructure is required? LOOK FOR: Easily scalable solutions that leverage existing 1Gb infrastructure and the latest network security protocols. AVOID: Costly 10Gb or complicated 1Gb/10Gb
hybrid systems, which require new cabling and specialised network switching hardware. Lastly, no product is worth much if it isn’t reliable. Look for AV-over-IP solutions that have a proven track record and low failure rate in the field – instead of in a testing lab. www.crestron.com STAND: 2-C20

The Intel Unite solution: scalable collaboration
SOLUTIONS4AV concentrates on promising media technology developments
Collaboration continues to be pivotal in both business and education settings. Employees, teachers and students desire an easy user experience that allows for more flexibility in the way they engage with content, whether in the same space or from across the world. At the same time, IT requires tools that are secure, scalable and easy to deploy and manage across diverse spaces and locations. The Intel Unite solution is an open and extensible wireless content sharing collaboration tool that delivers a high-quality user experience to employees, teachers and students so the content – not the technology – is the focus. Leveraging its open platform, additional peripherals and tools can be added to customise the capabilities of each space, and users can connect from almost any device. Intel Unite solution is built on the Intel vPro platform for the trusted performance, security and manageability that IT requires. Empower users, increase productivity and streamline IT – it’s all possible with the Intel Unite solution.
Discover the cost-effective solution designed for ease of use, mixed environments, and the flexibility for modern businesses and learning spaces. See you at ISE.
As a renowned company in the AV industry, LANG AG has set itself the task of filtering technologies that are trendsetting. Its brand SOLUTIONS4AV not only develops, designs and produces custom solutions for professional users in the AV industry, but it also engages in technological advances, and adapts ground-breaking technologies in the AV industry. The brand new S4AV GhosT-OLED display series, which is formed by Full Kit, Half Kit and Touch Kit, convinces with its innovative transparent technology. In addition to vivid colours and a wide viewing angle, the displays primarily score with an impressive transparency of 38%. This allows media installations to incorporate real objects or spaces behind the displays into the content and thus into the image effect of the application. With the particularly long running time of 30,000 hours with 18/7 operation, the displays provide ideal conditions for any kind of creative installation and thus are a guarantee of fascination with a captivating effect on their viewers. The displays not only impress with their transparency, but also convince during installation: two people and a few steps are all it takes to adapt the GhosT-OLED to the structural conditions or to make it touchable within a very short time.

The real business impact of video conferencing Video has evolved from a bonus feature or an option to a requirement for businesses that value the human element of face-to-face communication. Teams now regularly count on video to get missioncritical work done and, according to new survey data, 50% of knowledge workers see video conferencing as equally or more important than AI to the future of work. Today, 48% of business professionals use video conferencing more frequently for work than they did just two years ago. A range of reasons contribute to that overall increase, with respondents using video conferencing to work effectively from remote locations/home (43%), improve team productivity when in different locations (43%) and more easily connect with customers, clients, or partners (31%). Quality has now reached true-to-life 4K resolutions, surpassing in-person meetings as the preferred way to meet for many. With Lifesize’s next generation of cloud architecture and next generation of meeting room technology, we’re redefining the expectations for video
conferencing and empowering teams to be more connected, more productive and more engaged. See how the perfect mix of smart meeting room camera systems and simple video collaboration apps sets Lifesize apart. www.lifesize.com STAND: 12-C120

PRESENTING SHOW PARTNER:
ISE is proud to have KNX as its Presenting Show Partner for the second successive year. We spoke to Joost Demarest, CTO, and Casto Canavate, Marketing Manager, at KNX Association about its latest development and its plans for the show.
Joost Demarest and Casto Canavate
What is KNX's mission? Our mission is to develop and promote the KNX standard to establish it as the technology to create smart home and building solutions all over the world. Our vision is to have KNX in every imaginable home, building, office or project. Meanwhile KNX is present in nearly every country around the world. KNX Association has thus successfully put into place a strong community for anyone wishing to benefit from the latest smart homes and buildings developments. KNX works to make access to KNX easier still. This is what drives us every day. What does KNX Association’s offering consist of today? KNX needs to innovate even faster in order to keep its leading position in the field for smart homes and smart buildings. Recent results are, among others, the development of KNX Secure to make KNX the most secure multi-vendor home and building automation technology worldwide! Also, the design, configuration and update of KNX installations is eased with every new release of the unique manufacturerindependent Engineering Tool Software (ETS). How has KNX responded to the emergence of the Internet of Things? New technical solutions will be offered to our community to make it easier to bridge the world of smart homes and buildings with the complex world of IT. Thanks to KNX IoT, it will become easier to tap into the rich data contained in a KNX installation, even for parties not directly familiar with the KNX protocol: IT experts will be able to tap into their data using mechanisms they are familiar with (e.g. REST interfaces). The data will be made available with rich semantics via enhanced export functionality
supported in the next generation of ETS software, ETS 6. For instance, information on a temperature value will be offered with additional data to communicate that this is the set value (not the current value) of a particular room in the building, whereby it will be possible to browse further to discover the other functions available in that particular room. Via this KNX IoT API, non-KNX IoT products will be able to understand data emanating from KNX much more easily. As a further step, KNX envisages realising KNX fieldbus devices based on IPv6-compliant network solutions. How does ETS 6 improve on previous versions? The user interface will not simply be updated, it will be totally revamped. The new ETS 6 is therefore not only adapting to changing user needs, it is intended to make working with ETS easier than ever before. Furthermore, ETS 6 again aims to be the tool that can handle any product implementing any KNX system feature, be it KNX-RF, IoT or KNX Secure. Last but not least, a simplified licensing procedure in ETS 6 should help kick-start customers in no time. Will people who are not trained in KNX be able to use ETS 6? For any qualified installer or integrator, ETS is
not rocket science: the integrator does not need any knowledge of programming languages, he or she simply can link the desired functions of the different KNX products via drag and drop. However, KNX continues to investigate how this linking can be made easier (at channel level rather than at data point level), while still keeping fine-tuning possibilities for the real experts. KNX Association therefore offers a wide choice of options for KNX beginners: from free online introduction courses, webinars, the KNX Virtual digital environment, up to certified courses. Visit start.knx.org and choose your preferred route to success. 2020 is the 30th anniversary of KNX. Will you be celebrating this at ISE? The 30th anniversary is accompanied by prior sneak-peeks, actions, events and further surprises, all leading up to the ultimate celebration scheduled for 20 October 2020 – the day on which KNX will once again write history! To learn more about what is planned, visit the KNX booth: see how KNX will create a festive mood that will make it close to impossible to wait for the great party! If you already want to share a glass of champagne with us, come to the KNX Celebration Party on Thursday 13 February 2020 at the KNX booth (9-F120).
