warm welcome to this year’s edition of – our official magazine previewing ISE 2019. It’s full of information to help you plan your visit to the show and make the most of your time in Amsterdam.

This will be the sixteenth edition of ISE, and we’re confidently expecting it to be bigger and better than ever before. We’ve spent the months since ISE 2018 analysing feedback from attendees and working on how we can provide an even more informative and enjoyable ISE experience.

So what’s new for 2019? The most significant change is that we are extending our base beyond the RAI Amsterdam to the Hotel Okura.

Located just a few minutes from the RAI, this five-star hotel will play host to five conferences over the four days of ISE 2019. (There will be other conferences taking place within the RAI, mostly in the Forum and/or Room E102.)

Our conference programme is more extensive than ever, demonstrating our commitment to provide more content for end-user attendees who work in key vertical markets, including enterprise, higher education, digital signage, visitor attractions, cinema, sports venues and hospitality. We’re staging no fewer than ten conferences this year: new additions for ISE 2019 include the Digital Cinema Summit, the Hospitality Tech Summit by HTNG, and AGORA, a new conference for the sports stadium market. Returning favourites include the Smart Building Conference, AudioForum, XR Summit and Digital Signage Summit, and we’re partnering again with blooloop on the new attractionsTECH event.

This year we are promoting our education and conference programme under the heading ‘Learn, Discover, Be Inspired’. ISE’s co-owners, leading trade associations AVIXA and CEDIA,

are making extensive contributions to this.

AVIXA is hosting half-day ‘What’s Next…’ conferences on integrated experiences in higher education and enterprise, as well as running its free programme of ‘bite-sized’ FlashTrack training sessions. CEDIA is hosting an extensive programme of professional development seminars, as well as its popular CEDIA Talks series.

The two associations are also heavily involved in the Main Stage – a new feature for ISE 2019. Located in a central position in Hall 8, the Main Stage will provide engaging and informative content during the four days, presented by AVIXA, CEDIA, media partner AV Magazine, and by ourselves. We have a full programme of award-winning case study presentations, panel debates on important industry issues and thought-provoking talks from some of the industry’s brightest minds.

We’ve also been working with the RAI to create more space for our exhibitors. On the show floor, once again we have 15 halls for you to explore – including an enlarged Hall 5, which is 30% bigger than last year. There are six technology zones to discover: Audio & Live Events, Digital Signage & DooH, Education Technology, Residential, Smart Building and Unified Communications.

I’m particularly looking forward to two high-profile events that will bookend ISE 2019. On Monday 4 February, our Opening Address will be given by Ambarish Mitra, CEO of augmented reality company Blippar; it looks to be a fascinating insight into how the world of AV will be impacted by, and can take advantage of, the world of AR. And on Friday 8 February, Tupac Martir, Creative Director of the multidisciplinary Satore Studio, will give our Closing Keynote. Tupac is someone who embraces live entertainment technology and

artistic creativity with equal gusto, and I fully expect to be dazzled – figuratively and perhaps literally! – by his presentation.

Soak up some culture in Museumplein Home to the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art, Museumplein is the cultural beating heart of Amsterdam. Having recently been renovated to a world-class standard, the leafy 19th century district of Oud-Zuid is an art lovers' utopia, and the open square between the buildings pulses with activity all day; with open-air exhibitions, markets and a large paddling pool to dip your toes into on warmer days. In the winter months, the square transforms with a vast outdoor ice rink.

Visit Anne Frank House Reflect on the atrocities committed against the Jewish people during World War II at the Prinsengracht house where diarist Anne Frank and her family hid from the Nazis for two years after fleeing persecution in Germany.

The front of the house is now a thoughtprovoking museum but the back annexe has been preserved to give an idea of what life was like for Anne and the families she hid with.

Waiting times are often lengthy, so visit early in the morning or book online in advance to beat the queues.

Many visitors to Amsterdam never manage to venture north of Amsterdam Centraal station — which is a shame, considering the vibrant food, drink and cultural scene that’s burgeoned across the water, along the banks of the IJ. A short (free) ferry trip will take you to a number of drop-off points including cultural hotspot NDSM, where you can enjoy a host of hip waterside hangouts, frequent festivals and events. Alternatively, the new Metro Line 52 also extends across the river.

PLAN YOUR VISIT ISE 2019 will be the biggest to date — both in terms of physical size and in the number of events taking place. That means that planning your visit in advance has never been more important.

Here’s what you need to know about getting to the show and making the most of your time there.

Getting to the RAI Amsterdam

Arrival and Registration

METRO, TRAINS AND TRAMS: The RAI is now even more accessible from central Amsterdam thanks to the new metro line 52. This opened last summer, and carries passengers from Centraal station to the new Europaplein station, situated in front of the RAI, in just eight minutes. For more details of this, and the city’s other cost-effective public transport links, please see the ISE website.

SHUTTLE BUS: A fleet of dedicated ISE shuttle buses runs each day of the show. These link the Amsterdam RAI with over 20 hotels across the city, and also serve a direct route between the RAI and the Hotel Okura (see Halls and Zones, below). Additionally, the shuttle buses make morning pick-ups and evening drop-offs at Schiphol Airport.

CAR: If you’re travelling by car, onsite parking is available at the RAI. TAXI: Taxis are in high demand during the show. We recommend you save time and money by choosing an alternative mode of transport.

BADGEHOLDERS: If you’ve already received your admission voucher head to one of the five entrances (A, B, C, F or L) where a team of friendly staff will help you enter the show swiftly.

PRE-REGISTERED/NOT REGISTERED: If you have a registration voucher and still need to collect your badge, or you have not already registered before arrival, please go to a registration desk at entrances A, B, C or F. Secure cloakrooms are also available nearby to store coats (€2 per day) and luggage (€4 per day). (There are also cloakrooms at the Okura.)

Wayfinding and Show Information ON YOUR WAY IN: Pick up a complimentary visitor’s bag, Official Show Guide and foldout floor plan to help you locate specific exhibitors. A copy of the floor plan can also be found on page 64 of this magazine.

INSIDE THE SHOW: You can speak to a member of staff at any Information Point; scan the QR code to download the new and improved ISE Mobile App; or use one of the many interactive wayfinding kiosks located across the halls to pinpoint your location and plan a route to any exhibitor, seminar or meeting room in the RAI.

Halls and Zones BIGGER HALL 5: The biggest change at the RAI this year is the construction of a new structure on the side of Hall 5 — close to the taxi drop-off point — providing 2,500 sqm of new space to host more than 60 additional exhibitors.

Learn, Discover, Be Inspired There’s a bigger than ever range of professional development, education and thought leadership opportunities at ISE 2019.

New for this show is the Main Stage, located in the centre of Hall 8, which will offer free sessions organised

by ISE, its co-owners AVIXA and CEDIA, and AV Magazine.

CEDIA is offering a range of professional development seminars (with Early Bird discounts available up to 8 January) as well as free CEDIA Talks, while AVIXA is hosting two conferences and offering free 20-minute FlashTrack sessions on its stand.

ISE at the Okura ISE at the Okura is a new four-day conference feature for ISE 2019. It brings together an inspiring programme of conferences exploring the latest technologies, solutions and strategies within key vertical market sectors.

These conferences will be held at the 5-star Hotel Okura, which is just seven minutes’ walk from the RAI Amsterdam. Shuttle buses will run between the RAI and the Okura to take attendees and exhibitors to and from the conferences.

Other Essentials FOOD: The RAI Amsterdam offers a broad range of dining options, from quick bites for those on the go, to more formal restaurant dining.

These are spread around the RAI, many of them inside the halls or near the entrances. Not all visitors know about the food court and restaurant area in the Auditorium Lounges. The first floor offers many different types of cuisine, while the lower floor has a luxury Asian restaurant and a sushi bar. The floorplan on page 64 shows the RAI's catering locations.

CASH MACHINES: Most outlets accept card payment, but if you do need to withdraw cash, ATMs are located at entrance C outside the entrance to Halls 2 and 14.

OTHER FACILITIES: Toilets and designated free visitor Wi-Fi areas are clearly marked on your show floor plan, available at the Information Points.

PUBLICATIONS: The ISE Daily, the official newspaper of ISE, is produced from an office just off the showfloor and printed overnight in time for distribution at the RAI and to hotels on the shuttle bus route each morning of the show.

ISE 2019 EVENT HIGHLIGHTS Show floor inspiration at the ISE Main Stage

Come to Hall 8 for a wide-ranging programme of thought leadership and best practice sessions during ISE 2019. The Main Stage, featuring an eye-catching bespoke design by ISE partner improve, will host free-to-attend presentations produced by AVIXA, CEDIA, ISE and AV Magazine.

AVIXA’s programme will examine shortlisted entries in the prestigious AV Awards 2018 to explore how today’s integrated experiences are being designed, created and installed. Attendees can learn from installations in connected stadia, hospitality, retail and other vertical markets.

CEDIA’s Main Stage programme will see 2018 EMEA CEDIA Award-winning integrators, together with brand representatives, talking through their winning projects – and the challenges they overcame to deliver solutions their clients loved.

ISE’s sessions will address key technology issues and trends affecting the AV systems integration industry, through presentations and discussions with leading technologists, consultants, authors and business leaders.

AV Magazine will host a series of end-user-focussed sessions, including panel discussions, ‘wow’ presentations, case studies and Q&As. The afternoon of Tuesday 5 February will see a panel discuss the very pertinent topic of diversity.

The Main Stage will also be the venue for a WAVE (Women in AV) networking reception after the AV Magazine diversity panel, and the Stand Design Awards at 16:30 on Thursday 7 February.

Tours offer market intelligence With the plethora of companies and technologies present on the show floor at ISE 2019, wouldn’t it be good if an expert could guide you to the most relevant companies, and explain how their offerings fit into the overall market picture? That’s the thinking behind our Show Floor Tours.

Suitable for any level of expertise, there are two different tours taking place during ISE 2019, covering Smart Building and Digital Signage. These are led by Bob Snyder, Editor-in-Chief of Channel Media Europe and Content Chairman of the Smart Building Conference, and Florian Rotberg, Managing Director of invidis consulting and Chairman of the Digital Signage Summit ISE. Snyder comments: “Last year was our first Smart Building Tour at ISE and we’re bringing it back in 2019 because of great visitor feedback. Most enjoyed the opportunity to see products and meet companies they might have missed. It’s also the special attention they get from our highlighted exhibitors that makes these tours worthwhile.”

Rotberg adds: “The Digital Signage Tour is the ideal way to see the highlights of the ISE show floor in just two hours. We’ll be picking out key innovations and offering insights into their likely impact on the digital signage and DooH markets.”

The Show Floor Tours are free to attend; places are allocated on a first come, first served basis. Watch out for announcements on the ISE website and social media over the coming weeks.

Visit innovative local AV projects on ISE Tech Tours ISE Tech Tours take participants on technology-focussed tours to local buildings and places of interest.

On each day of ISE, specially curated trips reveal the details behind unique AV and integration projects located in and around Amsterdam; including why, how and where technology is used and the core design principles involved. At ISE 2018 the Tech Tour locations included The Canon of the Netherlands and This is Holland.

The first ISE 2019 Tech Tours to be announced will take place at Amsterdam Johan Cruijff

ArenA from 16:00 to 19:00 on Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 February. (Return bus trips from the RAI will depart from a clearly marked meeting point.) The tours will be presented by the technical team at Amsterdam ArenA Innovation Centre. Each tour will be split into two groups, the first presented by the ArenA’s Innovation Team. Participants will discover an in-depth review of game-changing business models which include battery power energy saving and arena-wide building management systems. They will also be treated to an overview of the pitch, games rooms and press rooms.

n MONDAY 4 FEBRUARY IN THE FORUM, RAI AMSTERDAM

Kresa: Opening Address and projection mapping premiere Master projection designer Bart Kresa will present the Opening Address at ISE 2019. Kresa has over 20 years of industry experience and the BARTKRESA studio has won numerous event and themed entertainment awards.

BKS clients include Universal Studios, Disney, ABC, HBO, Fox, General Motors, Warner Bros, The Grammy Awards, Playboy, Bulgari, and T-Mobile.

His primary mission is to craft unparalleled projection experiences around the world through light, story and design. His company, with design teams in Japan, Poland and the US, caters to an array of visual styles for a wide variety of architectural spaces, amusement parks, sporting events or musical festivals.

Kresa will also be joining forces with Panasonic Business and ISE to create a projection mapping showpiece. Sviatovid, an angular, 5m tall projection sculpture, will receive its world launch at ISE 2019. It is the successor to the iconic Shogyo Mujo, which debuted at the Burning Man Festival of Arts in Las Vegas in 2017. The sculpture, which will set a new benchmark in audiovisual art, will be illuminated through 360° using four Panasonic PT-RQ32 4K 30,000-lumen laser projectors.

The Sviatovid premiere will mark the launch of the new Bart Kresa Academy, which will teach projection mapping to art school graduates at Kresa’s studio in Lublin, Poland.

OPENING RECEPTION The Opening Reception is a long-standing ISE tradition. Held on the Monday evening straight after the Opening Address, it’s a free event which all ISE attendees and exhibitors are welcome to attend. Acoustics, sound environments and the listening experience Produced by ISE partner Connessioni and aimed at technical professionals as well as end-users, AudioForum@ISE takes a different theme each year.

The 2019 edition will investigate the concept of sound environments and settings.

The brain processes sounds before sights, and more deeply. Even a consciously imperceptible stimulus can influence people’s experience, perceptions and behaviour.

How a sound is experienced depends on the architectural and structural features of the space as well as the design of the audio installation. Listeners can appreciate sound content in and of itself, as well as the positive experience that it brings: an experience that includes aspects of acoustic wellbeing, including psychological considerations.

Speakers include Donato Masci, an Acoustic Designer with Studio Sound Service, who will discuss ‘Sound broadcasting, acoustics, environmental and listening comfort’. Visual artist Martir to give ‘meta’ Closing Keynote Internationally acclaimed multimedia artist, visual designer and creative director Tupac Martir will be delivering the Closing Keynote at ISE 2019 on the morning of Friday 8 February.

Described by Vogue as “the visual artist and creative director behind some of the most important events in the world”, Martir is the founder of Satore Studio, a 25-strong multidisciplinary art, design and creative production group based in London. He also co-founded the studio’s sister venture Satore Tech together with creative technologist Sergio Ochoa, offering clients new types of technology-led experiences, supported by research and new product. Among the studio’s extensive roster are brands such as Adidas, BMW, Dior and Ralph Lauren; venues including the Saatchi Gallery, the Barbican and the British Museum; and performers such as Elton John, Sting, Beyoncé and Imogen Heap.

Trained originally as a painter, Martir also learned coding from an early age. Before Satore, his practice in diverse fields including concerts, opera and television exposed him to numerous techniques and disciplines. “I’m someone who

is very ‘techy’, I'm someone who is very artsy, I’m someone that's trying to play with new technologies on a regular basis,” he says.

RISE met up with him at VR Days Europe in Amsterdam, where he was presenting work in progress on the VR-based installation experience Cosmos Within Us. “We've already spent 16 months working on this piece,” he says. “We enjoy it because it gives us a completely different freedom of creativity.

There’s an entire gamut of elements and opportunities and skills within the liveperformance entertainment world that could really easily be moved to VR.”

Martir and his team are always on the lookout for new technologies to incorporate into their projects. Satore even has its own team of developers in house.

So what can we expect from his ISE 2019 Closing Keynote? He says he likes to give the audience an understanding of what he does – so the Closing Keynote will be about “using the tools that I would use on a regular basis, if someone asked me to design their keynote”.

A bit meta, then? “Very meta! In this case I am the client: Tupac the speaker. What would the Satore team as designers do for him to showcase?”

Martir also intends to talk about some recent project work: “I’ll try to show it in a way that is a bit out of the ordinary.” Given that a previous keynote saw him turn auditorium seats into controllers for music, video and lighting, we can’t wait to experience what he has to bring to ISE. VELOCITY = SPEED + DIRECTION How should AV companies adapt to the ever-greater pace of technological change?

Just do the math, says David Labuskes, CTS, Chief Executive Officer, AVIXA.

he velocity of change in our industry is stunning and it keeps gaining steam.

Amazon’s Echo made its UK debut in 2016, now Alexa for Business aims to popularise voice control in meeting spaces. IHS Markit predicts 8K TV shipments will grow from virtually nothing to 2 million by 2020. Have you even upgraded your enterprise displays to 4K yet?

I don’t need to tell anyone preparing for Integrated Systems Europe 2019 that technology changes rapidly. So does your business, and so do your customers. Heck, your industry association is not immune from superfast change.

We all need to figure out how to keep up with change – and capitalise on it.

Velocity is the name of the game in our industry. But let’s not forget that velocity is more than just speed. Velocity is speed plus direction. In what direction should we focus our efforts?

How will we harness all this technological change and direct it towards the outcomes our customers really require?

New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman wrote a book called Thank You for Being Late, which explores how the speed of change – especially technological change – has outpaced our ability to adapt. Ultimately, Friedman argues we shouldn’t tap the brakes on any of this rapid change, no matter how overwhelming. And he’s right. Here we are in the pro-AV industry, surrounded by technology that gets better, faster and more capable at breakneck speed, and we’d be crazy to try and slow it down.

In fact, doing so would be bad for business. After all, it’s dynamic stability that keeps a bicycle upright. You have to keep pedalling, or you’ll fall over. In Friedman’s book, he talks about an Olympic kayaker who says that any paddle instructor who advises you to “keep a paddle in the water”

is doing you a disservice – you need to be moving fast to remain stable.

What does that mean for our rapidly changing technology industry?

As Friedman puts it: “The only way to steer is to paddle as fast or faster than the rate of change in technology.” And the real-world equivalent of paddling as fast as water is “innovation in everything other than technology”.

Everything other than technology.

In other words, the technology will take care of itself. Technology will rocket ahead and make unimaginable things real. How do you keep pace with changes in technology? More importantly, how do you help your customers keep pace? You do it by innovating around the experience.

By taking that technology and reimaging what it can do for people. By listening to what they’re trying to achieve and then crafting a solution that gets them to the outcomes they seek. By mixing in the right content and designing for the unique space where the customer will experience your solution. The experience is the sum of those parts.

And experience is the basis of value. You go to your favourite restaurant and order a meal, not the meal’s ingredients. Your customers want the what of AV, not the how.

Macroeconomic Factors While industries and economies are generally flourishing, trade policies and protectionist views are acting somewhat as headwinds, according to the IOTA. Uncertainties related to Brexit, Brazil’s recent election, low oil revenues and fiscal deficit put downward pressure on the pro-AV industry. Factors leading to growth include Europe’s real GDP increasing from 1.9% in 2016 to 4% in 2017, new manufacturing hubs emerging in south-east Asia and south Asia, and improvement in the US economy from fiscal stimulus and strengthening business investments.

Overall AV Industry Forecast The pro-AV industry will grow from $186 billion in 2018 to $230 billion by 2023, according to AVIXA’s 2018 AV Industry Outlook and Trends Analysis (IOTA). We’re expecting compound annual growth to be 4.3% from 2018 to 2023, which is in line with our previous estimates and is consistent with GDP growth estimates. Regions around the world are growing, with Asia poised to take the lead as the largest market, capturing 36% of the pro-AV market by 2023. We’re estimating 2.6% CAGR for Europe. (avixa.org/IOTA)

According to the IOTA report, there are five key technology trends driving growth in pro AV: ●● Advances in audio are being fuelled by voice assistant integration, IP connectivity and artificial intelligence. ●● Display technologies, which include direct-view LED video, LCD, OLED and Micro LED, are poised to impact different markets. For example, the cinema pro-AV market, which is projected to grow 8.6% over the next five years, is ready for a technology upgrade. For cinema, direct-view LED technology offers a disruptive alternative to traditional projection, with several notable advantages, though at a currently high cost. ●● IT and cloud investments are increasing as buyers outsource infrastructure to take advantage of greater flexibility, agility and potential cost savings of cloud deployments. Cloud videoconferencing service revenue grew from $351 million in 2016 to $422 million in 2017. ●● Smart buildings are expanding opportunities for the pro-AV industry to provide efficiency and cost savings by integrating multiple networked devices, from lighting to video surveillance. ●● Artificial intelligence is increasingly being implemented into pro-AV solutions to connect users and their environments. AI may be most applicable to conferencing and collaboration for initiating meetings, making video calls and sharing real-time data through intuitive voice commands.

The Importance of Solutions The integration of technologies is what differentiates the pro-AV industry from others. Many of the technologies, products and services for audio and video capture, processing, storage and displays are similar across different applications, but combined, they meet different needs and business outcomes. According to the IOTA report, the top solutions include conferencing and collaboration, learning, live events, digital signage, security and surveillance, and performance and entertainment.

Conferencing and collaboration lead the proAV industry, generating $30.8 billion in global revenue in 2018, while learning follows closely behind ($25.8 billion) as digital and connected learning is widely implemented. Video displays continue to drive learning solutions.

The bulk of pro-AV revenue for live events ($23.5 billion) comes from sports production, for which broadcasters and TV operators invest billions on production services. The AV spend has migrated towards video production and transmission servers, as well as real-time access storage for slow-motion replay and multi-camera capture.

Digital signage is in a massive expansion, generating $21.7 billion, as options increase.

Streaming media, storage and distribution (SMSD) products are at the core, many of which are IP based, increasing the need for IT professionals and skill sets on staff at integration firms.

Demand for an enhanced audience experience brought by new technologies is driving growth of pro AV in performance and entertainment spaces ($16.6 billion), such as cinema and home theatres, museums, houses of worship, stadiums, auditoriums.

Market Demands The corporate market continues to account for the largest segment of pro-AV revenue.

According to the 2018 Market Opportunity Analysis Report (MOAR) covering corporate, pro-AV solutions for corporate office environments are expected to generate nearly $42.8 billion in revenue globally in 2018 (avixa.org/MOARcorporate).

What used to be a series of disconnected flagship conference rooms have become communication and collaboration points, tied together with networks. What were cookiecutter office buildings have become statements

of corporate identity, brand and culture. Where individuals used to be housed in a rabbit warren of individual offices, open concepts with privacy rooms and huddle spaces have emerged to facilitate inter-team co-ordination. All the while, some companies are instead downsizing their headquarters or local offices to encourage and support telecommuting and remote work.

While the corporate market represents the lifeblood of professional AV, smaller markets, many of which focus on the consumer experience, have the greatest growth potential. For example, from 2018 to 2023, the hospitality market will grow 7%, from $7 billion to $9.4 billion.

With the consumer shift from spending money on possessions to spending on experiences, the hospitality market is thriving.

The US accommodations sector alone comprises 4.2 million US jobs and generates

$293 billion in revenue. Hospitality companies understand the need to differentiate their offerings to stay competitive, which is leading them to invest in audiovisual solutions, with plans to spend 5.9% of capital improvement budgets on AV in 2018.

Like many other markets, one of the primary goals of hospitality is to increase the engagement level of its customers, often referred to as activation in the industry. Hotel designs are shifting to accomplish this goal, and the AV systems within them are changing in tandem. IN THE EXPERIENCE AGE, AV PLAYS A HUGE ROLE

BM gave us the PC. It gave us the ATM, the floppy disk, the relational database. It popularised the mainframe and artificial intelligence through its seemingly ubiquitous Watson platform. So, it was notable to hear an IBM executive speak recently like an AV professional.

Ben Brillat, IBM Chief Technology Architect for the company’s Global Sports and Venues Services group, described his company’s work on the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, to attendees of the American Association of Airport Executives’ annual Innovation Forum – an out-of-the-box event created to stimulate fresh thinking in the transportation sector. AVIXA took part in the forum, along with multimedia design firm and AVIXA member Moment Factory, to discuss real-world uses of AV solutions that improve the travel experience. And while one might have expected insight from Brillat into the venue’s 4,000 miles of fibre, 15,000 Ethernet ports, 1,800 wireless access points, and artificial intelligence-driven app, his description of the stadium’s “design thinking” was more notable.

According to Brillat, it started with studying “guest experience”, moved to establishing “customer personas” and “journey maps”, and proceeded into UX (user experience), all before turning to data management, application architecture and infrastructure. At one point, Brillat said: “We have to start this early in the design process. The physical building has to support the guest experience.”

It was like he was channelling what many AV designers and integrators face when their solutions are sought late in a project.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium does, in fact, include 2,500 displays and digital signs, 500 HD cameras, 3,400 speakers, 1,000 amplifiers and 90 miles of audio cabling, integrated by Baker Audio Visual. Not to mention LED walls and a massive Daktronics-engineered 360-degree halo display, powered by a video control system built by Diversified. It is an AV marvel in its own right.

But what’s great is industries coming together and speaking the same language. Mercedes-Benz Stadium is a big success in no small part because all involved were focussed on the experience. And the same holds true for technology solutions in other markets, from retail stores to executive boardrooms.

Catalyst for Growth AVIXA is committed to acting as a catalyst for market growth, building partnerships and engaging in industries where AV solutions can add value. We go where potential customers, decision-makers and influencers gather, initiate dialogue and build lasting lines of communication. We’re currently taking the industry’s message to the transportation, sports venue, retail, hospitality, higher education and financial services markets. And the reception has been great.

In London recently, we joined the Association of Luxury Suite Directors (ALSD), representing executives and operators of sports venues and the teams that occupy them, for the group’s first-ever European conference. We were joined by Lisa Knights, Head of Communications for Ashton Gate Stadium, where they’ve seen great, measurable results from building one of the UK’s biggest pub videowalls and other AV experiences to engage fans inside and outside the stadium; Phil McGowan, Curator at the World Rugby Museum at Twickenham Stadium, which has introduced many new AV installations with the goal of building relationships with fans that extend beyond the games themselves; and George Vaughn, Head of Technology for Ascot Racecourse, who emphasised the importance of using AV solutions to create a more engaging race-day experience. After all, a typical day of horse races includes only, on average, 20-plus minutes of ‘action’.

In the retail market, advocates of AV solutions come from Sephora, Sleep Number, The Container Store and others. They shared a stage with AVIXA at the International Retail Design Conference in October to explain their thinking behind integrating audiovisual solutions into

their stores. In the higher education space, AV is well known to be an important tool, but it’s also an important element of learning space design – reimagining where and how students learn, and teachers teach. AVIXA has been fortunate to share the industry’s experience at conferences like the annual OEB Global event in Berlin, alongside AV practitioners, higher education managers and learning space designers who have a deep understanding of creating technology solutions that focus pointedly on the user experience.

Establishing AV’s Role Engaging disparate markets and understanding their challenges is key to developing the next generation of technology solutions, and to ultimately establishing AV’s role in a future that changes rapidly. At a different airport design symposium last spring, Andy Cohen, Co-CEO of Gensler, one of the world’s leading architecture firms, explained that his company had adjusted the way it imagines airport parking garages in anticipation of a disruptive mix of ride-sharing and autonomous cars. What does that mean for AV? If an AV company can imagine that future, as people like Cohen do, it can begin to imagine its role in it. Cohen sees a time when those parking garages evolve into reimagined drop-off venues, replete with their own welcoming tech-enabled experiences. From wayfinding, digital signage and videowalls, to spatial audio and mobile-device integration, AV technologists and designers can redefine what catching a plane feels like – in no small part by focussing on the user experience.

Back to Mercedes-Benz Stadium. In a separate conversation at an ALSD event, Justin Wood, Principal and Sports Practice Director of Dimensional Innovations, had a unique take on the role AV plays in creating the right experience.

“A real challenge we have with venue design right now has to do with the ‘event of the day’,” he said. “At Mercedes-Benz Stadium, you have an NFL tenant and an MLS [Major League Soccer] tenant. The demographic overlap… is in the single digits. Soccer fans want to feel like they're in a soccer stadium and [American] football fans want to feel like they're in a football stadium. The ability to leverage audiovisual technology and really flip spaces and make them feel completely different is one of the greatest values we're seeing.”

Customers and influencers continue to awaken to the possibilities of AV technology. Builders of mainframe computers? They get it, too.

IMPLEMENTING THE STRATEGIC VISION

his coming year, 2019, marks the 30th year of CEDIA as the leading international trade association for the professional residential technology industry. CEDIA was founded in 1989 by a group of technology enthusiasts who gathered together to cast a vision for an industry that was growing quickly before their eyes. They defined the custom residential technology space and formed CEDIA as the connection point for members to share their passion, find resources to help them grow, and contribute to the outlook for the future of the industry. CEDIA delivered a vision of what could be and helped bring it to the world.

Today, 30 years later, CEDIA still delivers on that original mission but the organisation’s reach has massively increased from the original list of founding members. CEDIA currently represents more than 40,000 industry professionals from over 3,700 member companies worldwide who design, manufacture and install home technology.

This anniversary represents a momentous milestone for the organisation in more ways than one. Not only do we celebrate how far we have come over the past 30 years, but as CEDIA is implementing our three-year strategic plan, we look forward to the future

of the organisation and the ways in which we will continue to support our members and the industry.

As co-owners of ISE, there is no better place for us to showcase our commitment to the industry and demonstrate to members the progress we have made to bring them the tools and resources they need to be successful in 2019 and beyond.

Education The long-term health of the home technology industry is dependent upon a well-trained and professional workforce. It is CEDIA’s

responsibility to deliver educational pathways that support this goal.

In 2018, CEDIA further expanded the internal leadership and staff resources dedicated to the education department, including Tom Darling, Senior Vice President of Education & Certification and Samantha Ventura, Senior Director of Education, along with several additional staffers. Both Darling and Ventura have a deep understanding of post-secondary educational programming and online education formats.

Under their leadership, CEDIA has developed an aggressive education plan that includes significant revisions and additions to the online training programme. By the start of 2019, a new learning management system (LMS) will be fully implemented, offering a more streamlined user experience for those taking online training.

In January, CEDIA will launch 13 new online courses, with 70 available by the end of 2019.

The courses are set up to guide a user through an education pathway that prepares individuals for CEDIA Certification. CEDIA launched the globally revised ESC-T Exam in 2018 and a global revision of the ESC-D Exam is due to be ready by January 2019.

In-person training also represents a large portion of the CEDIA education programming for the next year. ISE provides an excellent opportunity for visitors across EMEA to access full, varied and high-class training tailored to satisfy industry requirements. CEDIA’s four-day education schedule will cover a

wide diversity of core curriculum, new technologies and business improvement topics at ISE 2019. CEDIA is especially excited about a completely revamped full day Home Cinema Design Masterclass that visitors can take on Monday 4 February, the day before the show floor opens – see page 32.

Cross-Industry Collaboration Another CEDIA priority is outreach to the design/build community which will help increase awareness with specifiers and create demand for CEDIA members’ services.

The CEDIA Outreach Instructor (COI) programme has a key role in this initiative. The COI programme is an exclusive CEDIA member benefit that provides home technology professionals with the tools they need to present Continuing Professional Development (CPD) education to architects, designers, and builders. This facetime with industry partners has proven to be a valuable asset to forge an understanding of the solutions CEDIA members provide, and often results in successful business relationships.

CEDIA is expanding and revising the CPD content available to COIs. The Designing Integrated Future-Ready Homes CPD and the Wiring Fundamentals CPD are both being updated in line with the latest thinking and best practice. Meanwhile, three new CPDs will be available to EMEA members in 2019 to educate architects, designers and specifiers about Lighting, Home Cinema and Media Rooms and Hidden Technologies.

The CEDIA Outreach Instructor programme continues to grow and currently has over 150 active participants globally who are regularly presenting CPD education to industry partners. To become a CEDIA Outreach Instructor, a CEDIA member has to take the CEDIA Outreach Instructor course to learn the presenting skills necessary to deliver CPD education.

CEDIA EMEA has added a dedicated staff person to focus on helping members collaborate even more effectively with the design and build audience in 2019, and beyond.

Workforce Development Creating a pipeline of new talent is essential if our industry is to grow. To this end, CEDIA is committed to raising awareness of our industry as a career opportunity among jobseekers.

CEDIA is developing the Smart Home Technician Apprenticeship standard, to encourage young professionals to enter the industry. This standard will put more control in the hands of employers, ensure that apprentices have the right skills and knowledge, and address skills shortages facing the industry, as well as attract new prospective professionals. In 2018, this standard was approved by the Institute of Apprenticeships. CEDIA is now hard at work identifying appropriate training partners for this apprenticeship programme with a view to launching the scheme in 2019.

In addition, CEDIA’s Smart Home Technician and Smart Home Designer tracks are accredited by City & Guilds, a renowned awarding body. City & Guilds evaluates externally accredited training against a comprehensive benchmark that has been developed from over 130 years of experience in managing quality systems and training courses. This gives CEDIA introductory training both heightened visibility and credibility among new entrants.

Audio and Live Events Halls 5, 6 and 7 “We’re expecting to see very healthy growth in what our Industry Outlook and Trends Analysis (IOTA) researchers are calling performance and entertainment solutions. And it’s not just because event spectacles like the Olympics or the Super Bowl get more incredible every time they’re held; it’s also because corporations, product brands, hotels, retailers and more are racing to engage customers through experiences. Using AV to entertain and create experiences is increasingly pervasive well beyond traditional definitions of live events.”

ccording to EventMB research, 59% of event planners predict that their use of event technology will increase, while 39% think it will remain the same. IBISWorld says the events industry has grown by 6% each year for the past five years, and is now worth an estimated $32 billion in the US alone.

There is little doubt that live events – whether for entertainment, product launches or corporate meetings – continue to be a thriving business. And given millennials’ preference for spending money on experiences rather than possessions, that’s no surprise.

For the best part of a decade, the debate around audio at ISE has been dominated by the transition from point-to-point connectivity towards networked audio. But, with the merits of networking now firmly established, it is next-generation audio (NGA) technologies such as immersive and object-based audio that are increasingly coming to the fore. ISE 2019 visitors should therefore expect to learn about NGA’s possibilities for theatres, concert halls, museum exhibits and more.

What should be on your radar…

• The internet is crammed with examples of the world’s highest profile brands using projection mapping to deliver compelling, aweinspiring images almost anywhere. From a relatively niche market, it has exploded in popularity – and is now taking advantage of realtime tracking technology to transform what’s possible. The ISE show floor will feature plenty of manufacturers demonstrating the latest and greatest.

• The increasingly rigorous demands of live event producers – such as higher resolutions, real-time effects, compositing and advanced image manipulation – are giving rise to new generations of media servers with powerful hardware and sophisticated software. Now they can manage not just video and audio, but lighting, pyrotechnics and combining the real world with the virtual world. ISE has always been favoured by media server manufacturers to launch new levels of live event functionality.

• Growth in the live events industry has attracted numerous new entrants, offering audience engagement tools, enhanced experiences via VR and AR – and even the ability to incorporate a PowerPoint presentation that attendees can log on to via their phones. Live events have also become significant users of drones to add a new dimension. Visitors to ISE 2019 can expect to find even more that will make their events even more memorable.

• The rise of multiple new vendors offering audio processing and management solutions with the capability to support immersive audio means that this area of the market is becoming highly dynamic.

2018 saw theatrical (The Who’s Tommy in Denver, US) and concert (Angus & Julia Stone) productions alike experiment with immersive audio. ISE 2019 visitors should anticipate new solutions that satisfy the needs of various install market segments.

• Loudspeaker technology is obviously pivotal to the realisation of a successful immersive audio deployment, and a number of vendors are now marketing individual products and packaged solutions geared towards immersive configurations. Expect a broader range of these to be on display – including systems aimed at those with less generous budgets, such as smaller theatres, concert halls and museums – at ISE 2019.

• But it won’t all be about NGA, as there are still plenty of exciting developments taking place in the world of networked audio. Look out for products being promoted as supporting the latest, 2018 revision of the AES67 interoperability standard for IP-based audio, which includes a new protocol implementation conformance statement.

Audio/video bridging (AVB) is also enjoying something of a second wind. Attendees should anticipate new launches with support for that standard as well.

Digital Signage & DOOH Hall 8 “The digital signage industry is being disrupted by new market players such as professional service providers – Accenture Digital, Capgemini Invent or econocom, for example – who are big enough to manage and finance worldwide rollouts. The market entry of global players is, on the one hand, a promising sign for the maturity and potential of digital signage. On the other hand, it may represent a challenge to existing systems integrators who will have to find new ways of establishing competitive advantage.”

t seems remarkable to think that, not many years ago, advertisers questioned whether digital signage was a valid part of the marketing mix. No less remarkable is that, in a market that might appear saturated, the growth of digital signage continues unabated, with Grand View Research predicting worldwide growth from $16 billion in 2016 to $32 billion by 2025.

The aim of any form of advertising has always been to attract and inform. Digital signage, though, takes that to a new level with its ability to engage: now, it’s getting personal.

Today, the so-called ‘customer journey’ axiomatically includes digital signage wherever possible, and seeks to develop and strengthen relationships with individuals.

That’s given rise not only to widespread connectivity between phones and screens, but also screens that use AIdriven algorithms to recognise the viewer’s profile – and even mood and response – and adjust the message appropriately.

What should be on your radar…

• UHD/4K resolution has now largely established itself as the industry standard resolution for digital signage displays. 8K resolution is, however, on the horizon. Because the advantages of the higher resolution only become apparent at larger screen sizes – 65” and above – there is doubt about its likely take-up in consumer TVs, a doubt reinforced by both bandwidth and content concerns. There is, though, little doubt that the digital signage industry will embrace 8K resolution. ISE 2019 will likely see the first examples on show.

• Over the past couple of years, LED display technology has come in from the cold – literally. Once exclusively deployed outdoors for viewing from distance, it has made huge strides in image quality – not least in terms of pixel separation, such that it now rivals LCD technology-based displays. But it now brings not only the resilience for which it was once most prized, but also creative potential and lower cost of ownership. Historically, that attracted a price premium.

At ISE 2019, look for LED digital signage displays that are achieving price parity with their LCD-based equivalents.

• Look for more interactivity in digital signage, suggests AVIXA’s Brad Grimes, but thoughtfully integrated interactivity that doesn’t sideline human connection. When AVIXA studied the retail space for its Market Opportunity Analysis Report (MOAR) series, it started

by asking the ultimate end-users – shoppers – about their ideal in-store technology experience. Studies indicate that the hyperconnected, incredibly tech-savvy younger generations actually do want to make purchases in brick-and-mortar stores. And they want technology to support their thirst for more information about products, but they don’t want it to replace knowledgeable, engaging salespeople. To the extent AV technology creates a fresh, new instore experience, shoppers will embrace it.

• Augmented reality and virtual reality offer real potential for the digital signage community with their ability to enhance an image with relevant information. In digital signage as elsewhere, the separation between the physical world and the digital world is progressively eroding – providing retailers and advertisers the opportunity to deliver engaging, content-rich experiences. Digital signage innovators will be showcasing these new technologies at ISE. • Of all digital signage display technologies, OLED seems to have the most potential with its stunning image quality, its paper-thin dimensions and its ability to contort itself into almost any shape.

For an increasingly blasé public, OLED has the potential to capture attention like no other technology can. ISE this year may prove too soon for OLED to make its digital signage bow – but you never know…

f anyone doubts the growing importance of technology in education – no longer the ‘nice to have’ it used to be, but an institutional imperative – they need look little further than Research and Markets’ prediction earlier this year that the global education technology market will grow from $17.7 billion last year to $40.9 billion by 2022. That’s an astonishing 18.3% CAGR. In recent years, we have seen the dawn of a new era in AV technology-assisted learning that puts students, rather than teachers, at the centre. With the advent of so-called ‘flipped learning’ classrooms are becoming places of collaboration rather than instruction – and many of the collaborative tools more typically associated with business are no less appropriate in the pedagogical environment.

VR/AR/MR/XR technologies show great promise in bringing new learning experiences to the classroom – but phones/tablets and interactive screens will continue to be the dominant technologies, with growing levels of refinement and increased availability of education-specific software.

What should be on your radar…

• A recent UK survey found that the biggest concern for education technology professionals in 2017 was cyberbullying – with the previous year’s leading concern, radicalisation, dropping to second place. BYOD, or some variation of the principle, is only exacerbating the wide range of security threats being faced by educators.

Look around the show to find out which education technology manufacturers are responding to those threats.

• Interactive whiteboards have continued their decline in growth as the preferred AV support in classrooms, thanks to the increased functionality at lower cost of the latest generations of touch screens.

Those screens are, however, becoming increasingly difficult to tell apart. Look for innovative extensions to educational display capabilities at this year’s ISE. • The growing centrality and complexity of educational technology, the increasing demands made of it by students and teachers alike and the omnipresence of a variety of security threats, mean that schools and colleges are increasingly struggling to cope with limited resources. Just as the corporate world has become comfortable with cloud-enabled functionality such as SaaS and UCaaS, ISE 2019 may well see further growth in ETaaS – Education Technology as a Service.

• Imagine being able to collect data about every student’s attendance, behaviour record, learning progress and achievements to develop a unique programme and goals for that student – and to support staff in identifying improvement opportunities. The data is there and can be easily collected – but making sense of it? At ISE, find out if AI will have a role to play in helping schools and colleges continue their move away from ‘one size fits all’ teaching towards adaptive/custom learning.

• Superficially, there is a disconnect between collaborative learning, which is group-centric, and VR/AR/MR/XR, which tend to lend themselves better to individual experiences. As with all educational technologies, however, if they are used as part of a coherent mix of learning approaches, they unquestionably have a place in the classroom. ISE’s XR Summit will likely be stimulating and thoughtprovoking for educators.

• Educators continue to wrestle with the BYOD conundrum. Ideally, each student will have their own tablet – but that’s potentially socially divisive. On the other hand, with budgets already stretched, providing them is not an affordable option. Even the education-specific iPad that Apple introduced early in 2018 is likely to be beyond the reach of most schools. Will ISE 2019 see a manufacturer augment their educational offering with a purpose-built, low-cost tablet?

ntertainment, convenience, energy savings and security have been the traditional drivers of the residential systems market – and each of those continues to evolve in line with developments in technology, enabled by the burgeoning growth in the number of IoT-enabled devices and more powerful, higher bandwidth networks. The industry is being driven by increasingly sophisticated, informed and demanding consumers. Add to that the ever more central role that smartphones are playing in our lives, and all the elements are in place to assure the industry’s continuing growth.

With innovations such as these, the average compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 25% predicted by market researchers for home automation seems eminently achievable.

What should be on your radar…

• LED display technology has now reached a point in terms of image quality that it can satisfy the most demanding consumers – and it can create large, seamless on-wall images. However: where projection uses the acoustic transparency of screens to accurately deliver sound, that remains a challenge for LED. At ISE, look for manufacturers addressing that transparency challenge with fewer speakers doing more – and audio that delivers more channels at higher resolutions.

• Few doubt that 8K screen resolution is coming, although adoption for the average consumer is likely to be slow in the short term.

However: for high-end home theatre, 8K projectors are starting to appear, delivering new levels of detail. Expect to see examples of 8K projection targeted at the home at this year’s ISE. • We’ll continue to embrace the likes of Alexa in controlling home devices – but speech technology still has plenty of room left to develop. Expect AI to become increasingly significant, with its advanced capabilities meaning that more natural speech becomes possible: instead of just listening, we’ll expect Alexa to understand.

ISE 2019 may be too early for evidence of AI-enabled voice interfaces – but we may be surprised…

• DIY is not a new phenomenon for custom installers – think TVs, VCRs and cassette decks – but the number of DIY solutions has grown, for applications such as security, and are hitting attractive price points.

There will continue to be a role for pro, as well as DIY products, in the residential space. To deliver value, though, they need the support of fast, robust, bulletproof networks. Expect the network monitoring and firewall segments to continue to grow and be more important.

Examples will be on show at ISE. Expect also to see more PoEenabled products.

• Increasingly, wellness is becoming a focus for the home automation industry – with systems that monitor and control air quality, for example and, more recently, lighting that matches the body’s circadian rhythm in its brightness and colour temperature. Look out for products in this space at ISE. • The new frontier in home automation may be water control. Flooding is, it is said, one of the most common household claims on insurance.

Retrofittable devices that monitor water flow and automatically shut off valves in the event of discrepancies were on show at CEDIA Expo. Expect those devices to make their way from San Diego to Amsterdam.

• AR and VR will become increasingly important tools for custom installers as they will be able to clearly show prospective customers what the finished project looks like. The new technologies will support the growing number of software tools designed to help in the creation of professional, consistent installations. Expect to see early examples of AR and VR as sales tools at this year’s ISE.

illennials are, it is said, the largest generation in Western history, and are now surpassing baby boomers as the dominant element within the workforce.

Among their many alleged traits is that they’re prone to frequent job changes, continually seeking greater satisfaction.

For employers, that makes them challenging to retain.

What’s that got to do with smart building?

Historically, the impetus for smart buildings has been driven by bottom-line considerations (smart buildings save money) and growing environmental concerns (smart buildings save the environment).

That focus is changing. Energy saving will continue to be a driver but, increasingly, smart

building will be about being better places to work. HVAC will become integrated with security/ access systems, room booking systems and so on and, through their ability to identify each employee, will adapt the building to that person’s needs and preferences.

Not only is that expected to help with employee retention: happy employees are also more productive employees. It’s a classic win-win.

What should be on your radar…

• Imagine every employee’s ID card telling the building which floor their office is on so that the lift stops automatically, or how they prefer the conference room equipment to be set up. The building may even allocate a preferred hot desk. ISE 2019 will tell us how close we are to that vision.

• Sensors – light, temperature, occupancy and so on – are at the heart of smart building. The technology continues to develop rapidly with more advanced digital signal processing and more highly integrated electronics – all at reducing cost. A bin sensor that tells the system it needs emptying? A fridge sensor that detects the absence of milk?

A washroom sensor that identifies ‘poor air quality’? As sensors become more capable and more affordable, look for innovative applications of this technology.

• The key to the future of smart buildings is in full integration of everything a building does, and how it reacts to the needs of the people who use it. Expect to see room/presentation management companies expanding and/or repositioning their existing solutions with a greater emphasis on how they can be part of a true smart building system.

• Big data/smart buildings rely on the capture of enormous amounts of sensor-acquired data. Turning that ‘Big Data’ into meaningful, actionable information continues to be a challenge. Traditional

building management systems will be supplemented or supplanted

by AI-enabled tools that will transform how buildings can be managed. ISE 2019 could see the first of those come to market.

• In AVIXA’s estimation, the hospitality industry will be a big adopter of smart-building technology, notes the organisation’s Brad Grimes. In fact, he points out, according to AVIXA’s latest Industry Outlook and Trends Analysis (IOTA), the hospitality market will be the fastestgrowing segment for connected equipment – in both new and retrofit applications – that make buildings smarter, especially in terms of customising rooms and spaces to suit guests’ unique preferences.

• KNX has long been the open connectivity standard for smart buildings, and the introduction of KNX Secure addressed an important perceived vulnerability to attack. KNX over IP is now possible. Other communications protocols are vying for the smart buildings space. Look out for new entrants featuring higher bandwidths and even greater security.

• The combination of sensors, big data and AI-based analytics is being used in a range of platforms – from oil exploration to aerospace to heavy industry – for predictive maintenance. That helps eliminate mission-critical failures, minimises downtime – and reduces costs.

The same principles can be applied to smart building. Will any manufacturers specifically address this opportunity at ISE 2019?

Unified Communications Hall 11 “The future of unified communications is in collaboration. While companies embrace communications technologies to support a distributed and remote workforce, they’re also starting to encourage certain workers to return to central offices. Remote employees and business partners have always needed a robust UC platform to engage with colleagues – but now, patching those remote workers into AV-rich conference rooms and huddle spaces could be an important opportunity for solutions providers.”

T

he UC business has moved on from its original positioning that it represented a more productive, cost-saving, greener alternative to traditional meetings – although those are no less important. Digital transformation is enabling unprecedented flexibility, encouraging the collaborative style of working preferred by the millennials who are forming an increasingly large part of the workforce.

Research and Markets estimates that there are 32.4 million huddle rooms worldwide – and, despite the perception to the contrary, it claims fewer than 2% are video-enabled. That represents a huge opportunity for manufacturers, integrators and users alike.

And here’s another opportunity. According to remote meetings company LoopUp, US and UK businesses squander a total of $34 billion each year as a result of wasting 15 minutes per call waiting for late participants or dealing with other distractions. The same report found that only 12% of users feel as comfortable with video calls as they do with audio calls.

What should be on your radar…

• The history of technology has seen generic solutions rapidly developed to become application-specific solutions. In the UC market, it’s becoming clear that users want something other than ‘one size fits all’ approaches – systems that mirror the way in which organisations work differently, rather than systems that compel them to adapt how they work. At ISE 2019, look out for UC offerings targeted at individual industry sectors.

• In a workplace increasingly characterised by mobility, working remotely and home-based working, the mobile phone is becoming the primary tool for accessing UC systems, and UC systems are becoming increasingly mobile-centric. Here, there is much to improve in terms of the user experience. Expect to see UC providers focussing greater attention on delivering apps that more tightly integrate off-premise participants.

• With UC becoming increasingly central to the way in which companies work, its ability to easily include growing numbers of users is becoming a vital consideration. That’s placed a focus on scalability – and, inevitably, on the role of the cloud. In turn, that’s causing suppliers to rethink their business models – complementing outright sale/purchase with a UCaaS or hybrid offering. More companies offering UC solutions as a service will be a feature of ISE 2019.

• The AV industry is heading in a similar direction to the broadcast industry when it comes to so-called ‘microservices’. Microservices decompose applications into their constituent functional components, giving users the flexibility to choose exactly what they need – and to add functionality in future as needs change and grow.

The UC industry is likely to lead this transition, with early evidence available at ISE. • You’re in an online meeting. You turn your head to the left, and now you’re talking face-to-face with that person. You look to the right – and don’t know who that is, until their name and job function appear on the screen in front of you. Those things are possible because you’re using augmented reality to deliver a more intuitive, richer UC experience. ISE 2019 will likely see the first implementations of VR in a unified communications context.

• A study by Nemertes Research found that one of the highest priorities for IT departments is standardisation of meeting rooms – booking process, furniture layout, technology/products, connected services and so on – in order to minimise user frustration by creating a consistent and predictable experience. Look for companies offering UC solutions that will support every type of meeting room, regardless of its size or anticipated usage.

How do you describe KNX to someone who hasn't heard of it?

KNX was one of the very first home and building automation systems, and has been on the market for almost 30 years. KNX is still the state of the art because with technical evolutions of the KNX system, it has been able to adapt to new market demands, such as wireless communication, and an increased awareness for secure technology in smart homes and buildings. KNX has worked, is working and will continue to work on solutions that are the most suitable, most updated and most secure available, thereby keeping strict downward compatibility.

The beauty of KNX is its integration: all KNX devices work together, regardless of manufacturer. This allows the implementation of whatever solution for your smart home you can imagine – there are no boundaries for making a home or building smart when you use KNX. In summary, KNX combines all possible solutions, with an unlimited choice of products of more than 450 manufacturers, into one simple, connected and secure smart home or building.

Why is the ISE audience an important one for KNX? ISE has seen a spectacular increase in the number of visitors, as well as in the variety of applications shown. This is underpinned by the steady growth in the number of exhibitors with every new edition. Every year more KNX members report interest in participating in the exhibition. ISE is one of the most important trade fairs on the KNX calendar, and around 40 KNX members will be exhibiting at ISE 2019. This is undoubtedly a good sign for the market. We think that not only integrators and installers but also their customers will find the new developments very attractive – as KNX is capable of fully integrating the entire living and working environment including home and building automation, multimedia and IT.

As such, our hope for ISE is that it will help us increase the demand for KNX solutions.

In which markets do you think KNX technology has the greatest potential for growth?

Traditionally, KNX started its activities in Europe where it has been present and well established for many years. In 2011, KNX began its internationalisation activity outside Europe and today is present in 45 countries on all continents.

The KNX standard – which is approved as an international standard – has also been officially approved in China and Australasia as local standards. Therefore, KNX has great potential in these countries, next to the United States and Japan.

How does KNX technology interact with the Internet of Things?

For many years, KNX has been offering solutions to connect your smart home and

buildings solutions to the internet (via IP).

Today, IoT is having a big impact on markets and so KNX has listened to new demands and is currently working to extend its technology. In fact, KNX IoT is currently the main focus of the technology development and marketing efforts at KNX Association.

The goal of KNX IoT is to fully merge the world of the internet with the world of KNX. KNX IoT aims to reduce the current required KNX knowledge and open the current KNX ecosystem to non-KNX IT specialists through ‘out-of-the-box’ operation, while still allowing advanced configuration and adaption by specialists.

In other words, the KNX protocol becomes more accessible to link a non-KNX product (such as Sonos, Alexa…) to KNX; also, true KNX IoT devices become a possibility, using IP protocols like https and CoAP to communicate.

Even on IP, KNX will thus bring an integrated solution that is standardised and accepted by all professionals.

What is your ultimate goal for KNX? The ultimate goal for KNX is that the technology is used in every application in a smart home or building, making everybody’s life and work more comfortable, secure and foremost: better!
