The Kew Workshop Centre Stage with Roland

SOUTH-WEST London set design and construction specialist, The Kew Workshop, has been named as the latest company to join Roland DG’s ‘I’m a Roland User and proud of it’ gallery. The video testimonial can be viewed, along with earlier participants, www.rolanddg.co.uk/i_am_ proud_kew_workshop/ “I am delighted to join the ‘I’m a Roland User and proud of it’ family,” says Tom McLaughlin, Design

Director at The Kew Workshop. “Like Roland, we are delighted to stand up and be counted as a company that delivers the best possible results to its customers. We’d recommend a Roland machine to anyone looking to buy. They’re brilliant. Reliability has never been a problem with Roland, they’ve kept us running and every machine has always paid for itself within a matter of months.” The Kew Workshop Company specialises in designing and building sets for award ceremonies, conferences and exhibitions. The company’s first investment in a Roland machine, eight years ago, was to enable it to produce professional looking event signage in-house. “For one of our events we produce nearly 1,000 signs, from small table signs and vinyl decals to very large banners. Our three Rolands – a VersaCAMM SP-300, a VersaCAMM VP-540 and a SOLJET PRO4 XR-640 – which all print and cut, give us the versatility to produce the wide variety signs required for this show all in-house. We even ship the SP-300 with the signage as an onsite solution for last minute jobs. Integrated printing and cutting saves a lot of time and effort and enables us to respond to customers much quicker and more efficiently. Much of our work is very last minute but we are never concerned because even if a Roland has remained idle for a week, we know we can use it straight away without any problems.

Paper Innovation celebrates THIS year sees Paper Innovation celebrate 20 years as a unique manufacturer of promotional paper products. Inaugurated in April 1994, the company provided the first UK competition to 3M’s all-conquering Post-It Note. The first seeds were sown in Belshill, Scotland with modest investment, but an abundance of vision, determination and commitment to produce innovative, high quality paper products. Two decades of hard work, steady growth and astute investment has made Paper Innovation one of the strongest UK manufacturers in its field. The combination of litho and digital print, wiro and perfect binding and case-making equipment, together with the unique Stick Up note technology, creates a synergy of manufacturing capabilities unmatched elsewhere. The greatest success has been found within the promotional gift sector, as the products lend themselves well to use as business incentives, conference items and marketing tools. Items from the wide range have supported campaigns by Rolls Royce, Jaguar, Virgin, Apple, Mars, CocaCola, Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Sky TV BBC and ITV as well as all major banks, airlines, pharmaceutical companies and more. Now sited in Preston, Lancashire with a highly skilled workforce and strong connections to the University of Central Lancashire and local business and charitable ventures, all involved with Paper Innovation are proud of its contribution to UK

manufacturing, the British promotional industry and North West enterprise. Managing Director, Steve Johnston says, “Although the last 20 years have seen significant changes in our industry and the UK as a whole, our commitment to UK manufacturing remains. We have exciting plans for the coming years and look forward to a productive future.” www.paperinnovation.co.uk

Our seven year old machine, the VP-540, has run all these years without a hitch, no parts have needed replacing – we have just cleaned it and serviced it as Roland recommends,” continues Tom McLaughlin. As their business has grown, the Kew Workshop has expanded its Roland capability. Its most recent investment is a Roland 64 inch wide SOLJET PRO4 XR-640, which prints at up to 49m² per hour and offers huge flexibility and versatility. “The PRO4’s versatility means never having to say no to a client. We can always find a substrate on which we can print and so resolve what they had thought was a problem – Roland enables us to exceed our customers’ expectations and be a problem solver,” says Tom. Concludes Gillian Montanaro, Head of Marketing, Roland DG UK: “It’s great to have Kew as the latest member of Roland’s “I’m a Roland User” video gallery, which shows the diversity of Roland’s customers and the positive impact purchasing a Roland machine has had on their businesses. “Kew is a very interesting business. Because of the nature of the exhibition industry, many of their clients demand the highest quality products often within almost impossible turn-around times. With their growing portfolio of Roland machines, Kew can deliver this for its clients time after time.” www.rolanddg.co.uk

Navigator offers 500 iPad mini promotion

NAVIGATOR, the office paper brand, is offering its consumers the chance to win one of 500 iPad minis (16 GB) in a worldwide promotion set to run simultaneously this year in more than 90 countries where Navigator is sold. The promotion will run to 31 December, and consumers wishing to take part just need to buy a ream of Navigator paper and then go to the website at www.navigator-paper.com and enter the code printed on the back of each package, together with some personal data, in order to find out whether their code is one of the 500 winning codes entitling them to a fabulous iPad Mini.

This campaign has been designed to reward the loyalty of Navigator consumers around the world, who can win one of 500 iPad Minis (16 GB), one of the most highly coveted and sought after gadgets of the moment. Thanks to the worldwide scale of the Navigator brand, the campaign will be launched simultaneously in all the markets where the brand is sold over five continents, seeking to boost Navigator’s image and awareness rating as a global brand, and also its association with cutting-edge technology, by giving away a prize with significant added value. “Navigator is today recognised around the world as a leading premium brand in its

segment. Every year we surprise the market with fresh technological innovations that respond to our consumers’ needs, adding to the distinctive features that set Navigator apart from its competitors. The global dimension of this year’s campaign and the value of the prize will further boost the brand’s image and its benefits for consumers: Performance, Innovation and Leadership”, explained Ricardo Ferreira, the Navigator Brand Manager. “For several years, all Navigator reams have had a unique code printed on the back of the package, and consumers can use this code from the 1st of July onwards to win one of the 500 iPad Minis (16 GB) we have to give away. Our Facebook page will be one of the central platforms used to publicise the campaign, along with the brand’s contact details data base, developed in previous campaigns, which will be used to send marketing emails to tens of thousands of consumers registered with us”, added Ricardo Ferreira. We should recall that since 2004 Navigator has rewarded its customers by running global campaigns, attracting extraordinary levels of consumer involvement. Last year’s campaign, offering 333 iPad 2s, attracted more than 2.4 million entries from around one million consumers in more than 100 countries around the world. This was a record number of participants, and this year’s campaign aims to do even better, offering fresh surprises for Navigator consumers around the world with another tantalising offer. www.portucelsoporcel.com

Renz and Epson kit added to PE2014 line-up TWO new partners for the popular Print Efficiently show have been announced in the shape of Colourbyte, who will be showing Epson wide format equipment at the Hemel show for the first time, and Renz, who are returning after a two year absence and bringing a range of punching and binding machines. Renz (UK) Managing Director Iain Bullock: “We were always keen on the concept of Print Efficiently which provides something a little different to the traditional trade show. We like the idea of a practical, collaborative event with more real world solutions and less hard-sell.” Renz participated in the first Print Efficiently in 2011. “Although we were unable to attend in 2012 and 2013, we had a good experience at PE2011 and we’re expecting even better things this time around. We think the venue at Apex in Hemel is very accessible and there are plenty of attractions to interest potential visitors.” Renz equipment on show will include the popular AP360 fully automatic punching system which has some unique features, and the Mobi 500 semi-automatic wire binding system, which will bind books and calendars from 50mm to 500mm width.

Epson Proofing and Signage printers will be on display for the first time at Print Efficiently, supplied by Colourbyte who will also be showcasing their preferred software RIP’s. Colourbyte will bring both the Stylus Pro 9900 and the SureColor SC-S70600 to the event. The Epson Stylus Pro will demonstrate how with the optional Spectrometer you can print and measure your proof against the new Fogra standard using the Epson UltraChromeTM HDR pigment inks. The Epson SureColor SC-S70600 with optional white and metallic ink will showcase how to produce stunning images for both indoor and outdoor use on a variety of substrates and therefore opening

up new business opportunities. The fourth Print Efficiently will take place at Apex Digital Graphics in Hemel Hempstead on the 7th, 8th, 9th, 21st, 22nd and 23rd October. The collaborative event aims to demonstrate how equipment from multiple manufacturers can work in harmony in a workflow from conception to completion, and provide an educational forum to offer new ideas to printers regarding efficiency and profitability. Two of last year’s core partners — Apex Digital and IFS — once again have central roles. Full details will be announced in the coming weeks, but visitors can expect to see Apex Digital presenting a UK first from Ryobi at the show, and there will be new products as part of a comprehensive range of finishing equipment from IFS. Digital printing equipment from Konica Minolta will also be featured. 2014 attendees Vpress, Shuttleworth, CyanX, PDC, and KAS and Meler are also confirmed for the show. There will also be a programme of seminars focused on “real world” solutions offering practical and unbiased business advice. Rocket invests in new superwide EFI Vutek GS5000r WATFORD-BASED exhibition and event project management specialist Rocket has announced further investment in new equipment, with the addition of a new superwide format EFI Vutek GS5000r as it prepares for further growth in the exhibition, retail, event and interior market sectors. The latest investment in additional new equipment follows the company’s recent additional spend and establishment of a significant print industry first, when it became the first company in the UK to implement a Flow+ 2.0 wideformat business workflow system from print software developer, Caldera, earlier this year. The installation of the versatile five metre wide roll to roll Vutek GS5000r UV printer will ensure the business can meet the growing demand for high quality giant format work. The Vutek GS5000r will also enable Rocket to extend the work that it produces for sites where five metre size installations are beneficial for logistics, installation and end appearances. Rocket intends to enter a new era of superwide-format productivity, where it can combine speed and quality to produce single rolls up to 5m wide plus multiple rolls of 1.62m for added versatility. With reliable throughput being key, this new machine is able to produce colour accurate results on a huge range of flexible materials. Rocket worked together with EFI’s UK distributor, CMYUK Digital, to identify that the VUTEk GS5000r would be the ideal device to allow the company to expand effortlessly into the superwide-format market-place. Antony Rider, Commercial Director at Rocket said, “Through our ‘can do’ work philosophy we produce a wide range of applications, often onto new materials, for leading sites such as Wimbledon, Silverstone, Twickenham and Farnborough Air Show, and we liaise closely with design teams to make sure that the visual brand reflects the right vision.” The Vutek GS5000r is capable of producing billboard outdoor material output at up to 288m² per hour, and can run multiple jobs at once through its new multi-queue functionality. It can also produce high definition Point of Purchase quality material at speeds up to 96m² per hour, and has an advanced three-layering white ink capability for high impact images. Its flexible 3M premium UV ink enables printing on a wider range of substrates, and its multi-roll capability allows printing on up to three 152cm rolls simultaneously. “By adding an extra two metres in height when working with large graphics for events, exhibitions and retail can make an enormous difference in the way we produce a job,” explains Rider. “Reducing the number of joins in a piece of material not only results in a neater and more effective result but also simplifies the logistics for installers.

Present day UV-curable inks are so good that we can print direct to meshes and thinner materials, too, knowing that we’ll get the adhesion and durability that’s required, he added.” Rocket already has long-term relationship with EFI, running a duo of VUTEk QS3200 printers, and the company has grown much of its business around the flat-bed and roll-fed characteristics that these two UV-curable machines incorporate. However, because of the growth in demand for superwideformat applications, and the ability to reduce the numbers of seams and joins in very large jobs, the decision was made to purchase EFI’s 5m VUTEk GS5000r. In addition, the multi-roll capabilities of the machine make it simple to print two and three applications simultaneously. Rocket’s work has included the production of event and exhibition display material for such illustrious events as last year’s Champions League Final at Wembley Stadium, Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, Farnborough Airshow, Goodwood Festival of Speed, ATP Tennis Finals, PGA Wentworth, Twickenham Home Internationals and British Grand Prix, Silverstone, as well as major name clients such as BAE Systems, Unilever, HSBC, INTAS, Nikon and Nissan. Potential areas for growth include Rocket’s work in the sports branding sector, where it has significant experience within the field. Although a large part of Rocket’s clientele is agency based, some 30% of its turnover comes from the project management and installation side, an area where it is also investing in both staff and training. It is also looking at moving into other new areas for future development and expansion. Additional staff have also been added as the business has continued to grow, which includes two project managers and two salesmen. Junior personnel have also been recruited. www.rocketgraphicsltd.co.uk

TheMagicArt Collection

THEMAGICTOUCH continue to identify new and cost effective ways to assist garment and promotional product decorators with their on-going pro-active marketing campaigns. This month the company introduce a very special design and marketing tool for all to consider. The industry needs to continually create new business and with over 20 years’ experience TheMagicTouch confirm, the printed “personalised

sample” for customer evaluation is still the most cost effective method that consistently delivers results. So, why don’t you send out 20 samples a day to target existing and potential customers? Nathan Newbury Head of Technical at TheMagicTouch explains “ the process of creating a logo/design from scratch or re-drawing an existing logo/design suitable for sample submission can take some real time and for many is quite a complex task especially if you are not proficient on Photoshop or Illustrator. This new MagicArt package offers the ability to create, design and produce bespoke logos quickly”. TheMagicArt Collection is a collaboration with Action Illustrated, considered world leaders in “editable template” software. The package comes bundled with Corel Draw X6 and offers a multitude of design and marketing features. This solution enables easy preparation of “production ready” designs and artwork all copyright free and suitable for multiple use. Another great sales feature is the Order/Quote form that can

be submitted to the customer together with the sample showing the completed design perfectly positioned on a host of other printable items. Nathan Newbury added, “One fact we confirm is the high sales conversion rate achieved when you send a prospective client a personalised sample featuring their company name, website or logo. The reaction is always positive and combined with the simple sales pitch of no artwork cost, no set-up cost, minimum order is one, and the first one is free always results in a positive reaction. No emailer, brochure or website gives the same response” On the technical front all the templates are editable and it recognises complete groups and text lines including all applied settings like outlines, arches and colour fills. Positioned between the imageRUNNER ADVANCE C9000 Series and the imagePRESS C6011(S) in Canon’s colour digital press portfolio, the imagePRESS C800 Series produces high quality output at a market leading level of productivity. Thanks to its innovative design, it offers the versatility to create extensive and innovative applications across a wide range of media, including heavyweight coated stocks and envelopes, and can flexibly handle everything from short runs to complex variable data printing for personalised print communications. The print quality of the imagePRESS C800 Series is exceptional due to the following new and improved technologies: • Canon’s newly developed Consistently Vivid (CV) toner, which delivers higher quality print at speeds of up to 80 ppm and offers an improved transfer efficiency for enhanced colour consistency and accuracy across a wide variety of media, including embossed and rough paper surfaces for custom and premium applications. • Compact Registration Technology (CRT) ensures that every single image is placed in the same location every time on every sheet for the highest quality results, whether printing one sheet or thousands • A 32 beam Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) unit with multiexposure technology delivers an exceptional 2,400 x 2,400 dpi resolution, while supporting high productivity, and allows customers to choose from a selection of the most versatile screen patterns available. • The new Auto Correct Colour Tone (ACCT) for multidimensional mixed colour calibration, and the upgraded Auto Gradation Adjustment (AGA), an easy to use colour calibration tool, enable print professionals to provide their customers with high value applications comprising the most striking images and text. Achieving high production speeds of up to 80 impressions per minute on a wide range of media thanks to its Advanced Twin Belt Fusing unit, the imagePRESS C800 Series can run at maximum speed on heavy stock up to 220gsm without sacrificing print quality. It also offers exceptional production speeds because of innovative induction heating and cooling technologies, which enable the device to make intelligent temperature adjustments to achieve high productivity with mixed media jobs. The imagePRESS C800 Series can produce duplex print jobs on heavy weight media up to 300 gsm with highly accurate front to back registration, enabling PSPs to handle more demanding jobs without manual intervention or any impact on print room productivity. Increasing toner transfer efficiency, the Elastic Intermediate Transfer Belt on the imagePRESS C800 Series gives the device impressive media handling capabilities and allows it to produce extensive applications on uneven media, such as textured or recycled media.

Advanced feeding technology, in the form of a new multi-drawer paper deck with three new technologies, prevents misfeeds even of coated stock. Blowing air at different speeds, depending on the type and weight of paper, together with a new separation control system and new materials in the unit, virtually eliminates paper jams and, by maximising the availability of the machine, significantly increases a print room’s efficiency and productivity. The imagePRESS C800 Series features three innovative workflows to suit the requirements of in-house print and Graphic Arts environments: the Canon imagePRESS Printer Kit B1 — for the easy production of high-quality print jobs; the PRISMAsync iPR C800 Series A1– a single point of control for the entire production workflow with easy, intuitive operation and efficient task splitting; and the imagePRESS Server F200 and imagePRESS Server G100, two new digital front ends (DFEs) developed by digital print workflow leader EFI. These DFEs are the first built on EFI’s new Fiery FS150 Pro and FS150 platforms respectively and offer faster processing, unsurpassed image quality and easy to use, automated workflows. “As a long-time, valued partner of Canon, we are pleased to bring our newest Fiery FS150 Pro technology to market with the launch of the new imagePRESS Server F200 and G100,” said Georg Hollenbach, managing director, EFI Germany. An extensive choice of automated in-line finishing capabilities for the imagePRESS C800 Series ensures end-to-end productivity and opens up a wide range of business opportunities with minimal manual intervention, saving time and money on every job. For maximum flexibility, the imagePRESS C800 Series is also compatible with a wide range of third party in-line finishing devices. Commenting on the launch of the new imagePRESS C800 Series, Mark Lawn, European & UK Marketing Director, Professional Print Solutions, Canon Europe said: “By bringing to market the new imagePRESS C800 Series, we are expanding the line-up of our colour press portfolio and addressing the need for a production press that delivers exceptional quality, performance, and application flexibility for customers who don’t have the necessary volumes for the existing imagePRESS C7011 Series. He continued: “The imagePRESS C800 Series features powerful and innovative technologies that offer the highest quality, productivity and reliability, together with flexible finishing options, to meet the requirements of in-house and commercial print environments. We’re confident that the combination of the imagePRESS brand name and the outstanding capabilities of the new series will make it a very attractive proposition for the market.” www.canon.co.uk

Commenting on the launch, Jonathan Whitworth, Managing Director of DSales (UK) stated, “With the launch of the ineo+ 1060L we extend the availability of high quality, litho-like digital colour printing. These two systems set the standard that competitors will have to aspire to, in terms of colour quality and stability over long print runs, coupled with ease of operation. At the same time the new systems are compact and will fit easily into any environment and offer a choice of print controller to meet any printing need. We anticipate strong demand.” www.dsales.eu

Avery Dennison ‘White Rainbow’ SECURITY INKJET PAPER Wine Labelling WHITE remains by far the dominant label colour for wine and spirits producers, and the number of white label materials has just increased with the addition of five important new ‘White Rainbow’ products to the Avery Dennison wine labelling range. Two new paper based products (‘Rustique Extra White FSC’ and ‘Martelé Extra White FSC’), give designers a new whiter than ever shade for wine labelling applications. A new tree free ‘Pure Cotton’ material is also available, which has been evaluated at 30% higher whiteness when compared with other 100% cotton fibre wine labels on the market today (CIE Whiteness (Dry) — ISO 11475). Pure Cotton has the same printability as paper but the highest level of embossing. Attractive patterns are also included in the range: the new ‘True Linen FSC’ material has a natural and elegant textile finish, and ‘Pampa FSC’ offers a rich and luxurious feel with its micro diamond shape. Fabien Bourgies, global director Wine & Spirits, said that the new materials offer the technical

and aesthetic performance needed to stand out in a crowded market: “With these White Rainbow label materials, Avery Dennison now offers brand owners and designers new opportunities to make their products really leap out from a retail shelf, and communicate a very pronounced brand identity. Retailers know that consumers spend more time looking at wines if the area is softly lit, with a ‘cellarlike’ atmosphere, and the performance of a white label material can be pivotal in these conditions – the right material choice will make a bottle stand out in minimal light levels.” The new range will be valuable to a large proportion of brand owners: 80% of wine labels are currently white, in no small part because the colour conveys a sense of authenticity and premium quality. Bourgies said that subtle improvements to materials are important: “Consumers can perceive very small differences between whites, and these products give label designers useful new choices, especially when thinking about communicating a sense of luxury. The extra-white labels offer an exceptional level of contrast, and the two new materials with elegant diamond patterns allow fine printing details to be reproduced with very high accuracy.” www.averydennison.com

Renz cover Summer Camp Expo

It is always good to see our friends in Brighton especially when they bring goodies to share with our other visitors. Thanks then to Paul Simpson from Renz for bringing down some giveaways as souvenirs for our visitors.

T

HERE IS STILL time for a late summer visit so come on down and grab your own binder samples and if you are quick, one of the brilliant lenticular printed notebooks. In our own print shop we use the Renz semiautomatic punch and electric closer so you can make your own seaside gifts to take home from our selection of wire, coil and plastic comb binding. Now what is lenticular printing? Over to Paul with a pre amble from Wikipedia… These Renz covers were produced by a company called Easibind in Derbyshire. To follow up on this QPP summer camp visit story please contact Paul on 01707 282745. Renz product info at www.renz.co.uk

Lenticular printing is a technology in which lenticular lenses (a technology that is also used for 3D displays) are used to produce printed images with an illusion of depth, or the ability to change or move as the image is viewed from different angles. Examples of lenticular printing include flip and animation effects such as winking eyes, and modern advertising graphics that change their message depending on the viewing angle. This technology was created in the 1940s but has evolved in recent years to show more motion and increased depth. Originally used mostly in novelty items and commonly called “flicker pictures” or “wiggle pictures,” lenticular prints are now being used as a marketing tool to show products in motion. Recent advances in large-format presses have allowed for oversized lenses to be used in lithographic lenticular printing.

IT has been great to see so many old friends from the instant part of the print industry and some refreshingly new ones too! Visitors have joined in with our usual QPP Summer Camp activities, booked into our beta test centre and mixed a little bit of business and pleasure on the south coast this summer. Visitors to our summer print showroom have enjoyed hands on appraisals of the latest print kit and used our city centre parking for a quick printer’s trip to the seaside. Cheers Sarah, thanks for the shredder and please thank PJ for the bubbles on the beach.

PrintIT! is the biggest industry into schools programme in the UK and this is something that we, as an industry, should be very proud of. So, thank you to all the individuals, companies and organisations who have supported this initiative. As we move forward to celebrate the 10th anniversary of PrintIT! we are looking to the future with a renewed programme, updated with new technologies and opportunities, and offering the

bridge into apprenticeships and career placements. This will appeal to even more students and show them the breadth of careers in this industry and how dynamic, exciting, and vibrant it is. We would ask all print and paper companies to get involved with PrintIT! for 2015. Help to build the future of this industry!” The finalists for PrintIT! 2013/14 were selected by a panel of print, media and graphic arts experts that deliberated over who, out of the thousands of participating students, would win each of the competition’s subject categories. Four students were awarded for PrintIT! Scotland, 14 for PrintIT! and three students for a pilot project with the National Career Service. Ellie Webster, the 2014 Overall Winner said: “It was such an honour to be selected, there were so many great designs here today! This year the entrants designed a wide variety of end products, from posters, floor decals, aisle banners and stands to shoe boxes and mobiles. Mike Holyoake, General Manager, Xerox Graphic Communications, UK said: “This is my first PrintIT! Awards and I am blown away by the quality of the designs. The Printing 2014 Print Futures Awards

THE Printing Charity has unveiled its Supplemental Royal Charter and presented the 2014 Print Futures Awards at its industry event kindly hosted by Baroness Dean of Thornton-le-Fylde at the House of Lords. Stephen Gilbert, Chief Executive of The Printing Charity, said: “The Printing Charity has always supported people in printing, publishing, graphic arts and allied trades and our new Supplemental Royal Charter ensures we have the flexibility to respond to changes as they happen in the industry. It also gives our Trustees the power to assist young people, who intend working in the industry, by contributing towards the cost of

their education.” He described the charity as forward-looking, enthusiastic and focused, while remaining true to its roots of the relief of poverty and helping older people. Its profile, however, needs to be higher and he invited those attending to help the charity reach more people. Jon Wright, The Printing Charity’s Chairman, presented the Print Futures Awards to the 24 winners, the highest number ever awarded, commenting that the judges had been impressed with the enthusiasm and optimism these young people have for the industry. He also thanked Terry Ulrick, the Print Futures Awards Secretary who, he said, set the scheme up originally with BPIF and has made the Awards happen for the past 12 years.

20 | DUPLO LONDON CALLING | QUICK PRINT PRO | September 2014

Duplo London Calling

In one of the country’s iconic landmarks – The Shard – Duplo has announced the venue for London Calling 2014; East Wintergarden, Canary Wharf and looks forward to the next 30 years of print.

T

HE PREVIOUS FIVE sites for the exhibition – IMAX, Tate Modern, Hilton Docklands, Somerset House, and British Music Experience at the O2 – are visible from The Shard’s 72nd floor viewing platform, a fitting launchpad for a show that is now a fixture on the print industry calendar. On 15/16 October, over 300 people, representing 200 companies, will descend on London’s Docklands. Sitting snugly among the skyscrapers, and influenced by the Wintergardens of New York, the amazing glass structure boasts impressive transport links and a 27-metre high arched roof, complete with Italian marble floor and suspended gallery; the perfect location for the sixth London Calling. In addition to cementing their position at the forefront of print finishing by sharing best practice, new applications and innovations, the event also marks Duplo’s 30th year in the industry. The Surrey-based company provides finishing and printing equipment to print operations across Europe, the Middle East and Africa and the theme

for this year’s two-day event is ‘Without Limits’. The company aims to inspire customers through new applications and innovations. Duplo’s UK marketing manager, Sarah Crumpler, talks us through what we can expect in October. “This is Duplo’s 30th anniversary year. We’re not focusing on the 30 years that have passed, rather the next 30 years and the investment we’ve made into the company, and will continue to make in terms of the product and the service. We’re focusing on what our customers require and we kickstarted this year’s London Calling with a customer forum that took place two months ago that has steered us in terms of what we’re going to do with the event.

“We’ll be creating an application showcase in a print café where we will demonstrate work created by our customers, and the customers of our partners, showing the vast range of possibilities that can be created with different types of finishes. In addition, customer’s operators will stand by machines so they can provide real-time and reallife feedback on their products. We’re investigating a seminar programme too, utilising the suppliers involved who can potentially contribute additional information, areas of interest and, ultimately, get printers networking with each other so they can discuss issues that affect them, instead of us feeding them with information. It’s more about how they can support and talk to each other. The customers at the forum really maximised what they got from the networking evening last year. So we’re following the same format this time to create a platform for printers to get together and inspire each other.” As we go to press QPP are pleased to share a preview of this year’s London Calling partners, including Antalis, Balreed, Esko, Lumejet, Neopost, Renz, Taopix, Vivid and VPress. The event with also be supported by the BPIF and promoting PrintIT! (now in its 10th year which Duplo has supported from the outset). The choice of partners was guided by the feedback from the customer forum; rather than this being an exhibition of individual exhibitors this is a group of companies working together to show how complimentary technologies can be brought together to generate new ideas and help create new revenue streams through a series of live workflows. Seminars led by the BPIF and Neopost will provide further opportunities for visitors to gain new information, debate ideas and share best practice with each other. For further information or to register for this must attend event please visit www. duplolondoncalling.com (going live on 1 September), everyone who registers for the event and attends will be entered into a prize draw.

Keeping Ahead of the Pack Martin Christie says having the right tools for the job is the motto of the craftsman in any discipline, and it’s just as true in the digital industry as it is in any other.

months, with consequences for both devices and the programs running on them – hence the average mobile phone now has more computing power than the rockets that went to moon, and so on. So keeping up with current practice is vital. It is well accepted that the digital revolution has empowered so many participants worldwide, in so many ways. It has certainly changed our customer base, and the way we work. And that trend will continue apace. There is one important factor, however, that is essential to profitability and efficiency, that remains an issue, despite all of the technical advances, and to some degree because of them. That is the potential for error. Error in the print world is not only inefficient, it is costly, as well as wasteful. Bear with me for a brief historical aside as a friend on a popular social network site posted a scan of a newspaper piece I wrote over thirty years F COURSE THE advice doesn’t mean you need an entire electrician’s ago. It was a report of a Grand Prix Moto Cross Race, from near Bristol, one gadget box to change a plug. We’ve all done that with a table knife Sunday in midsummer, in a sports paper printed in Colchester on Monday, when needs must! But if it’s a job done regularly, and hopefully correctly, distributed nationally on Tuesday, and on newsagents shelves first thing the necessary devices are not only helpful but essential if the task is going Wednesday morning. No big deal you may think, as you can now send to be completed consistently and accurately. reports around the world in a couple of seconds at the press of a button, and This simple truth underlines the essential challenge faced presently in print even hard print can be churned out in hours not days. on demand, in that we have customers at both ends of the technical tool But consider this chain of events from trackside to tabloid. I would have spectrum and every level in between. From the bright eyed student clutching travelled back from Bristol to the London office Sunday night, with my his state-of-the-art Mac, bristling with the very latest software, and funded handwritten notes of the event, grabbing the official results (probably by a loan he may never need or be able to pay off, to the iPhone amateur using some free-sourced App which is the cyber equivalent of the table knife produced on an almost illegible Gestetner duplicator) as I left the track. I would then bash out my one thousand words on sheet paper on a manual screwdriver – we have to deal with them all. typewriter, pausing only to clean blocked ribbon from the keys. As I often repeat, it is essential to get at least one step ahead of the The A4 sheets would then be customer, and that’s not given to a proofreader who had easy given inevitable no other interest but to check financial restraints. All of this can now be done, like QPP, on one desktop, but then it was the labour of several skilled people and many hours. Even when all of that was done, the proofs and plates all had to be transported physically from London to the printers in Essex, usually accompanied by at least one member of the editorial or production team, to do a final check of the pages before the presses rolled. Inevitably mistakes slipped through in the process, but what is significant, and why I highlight it, is how few errors occurred in what was a relatively tortuous process. There was human error, but of course there was also, importantly, human intervention and supervision at almost every level of production which must have made the difference. Now we have technology which is supposed to take all that element of error out of the equation, but of course it doesn’t because you still have human beings at either end of the operation. Anyone who works in a modern print shop will have a wealth of anecdotes of digital bloomers small and large. The most obvious is the reliance on spell checking which can check the sequence of letters but not understand the meaning of the word in use. Even when I was composing my race reports, often fuelled by the drama of the story, the sub-editor would call over “did you really mean to say that?” How many contemporary relationships have had a falling out caused by a hasty and ill-advised text or email. Wars have been fought over less! Unfortunately, in a fast moving instant world people no longer seem to have the time or the patience to stop and check, nor wait a little while for things to be done properly. The only consolation is that it’s not just us in the print shop that are the victims of the ‘I-want-it-now’ society. I have a friend who has a fish and chip shop on Brighton’s busy Madeira Drive and, on a busy summer day, with queues of day trippers, there are the inevitable small pauses while fresh potato slices are fried. One particular customer was shocked and outspoken that he had to wait a few minutes for his chips to be cooked! I would have forgiven my friend if he’d presented a plate of the items raw. These people obviously never go into banks, where the current policy is evidently to avoid any human contact or at least delay it sufficiently to force people to use machines. Automation is never going to catch on in the print business, despite many attempts to introduce stand-alone machines, particularly in photo booths. It may work for simple jobs, like photocopiers in public libraries. But customers expect more than simple copies nowadays, and anything more complicated requires a certain amount of print preparation and production knowledge. Web-based design and print services do their best to make it easy for the customer to order product, but inevitably, as they increase the range of items available, to expand their market, the process gets more difficult to follow. Anyone who has tried to create a photo book online will know what I mean. So the one key factor that gives the digital print on-demand shop counter the advantage is, for all its associated frustration, that very human interface. It’s a well established fact that what a customer asks for is often quite different from what they actually want. That’s why there’s no point them consulting with a machine, or a website, that can give you lots of options, but no answers. It’s also fairly common that what a customer says they are giving you isn’t always what you receive, now it’s disguised in digital camouflage, rather than something real. That’s where we come right back to where I started this column, having the right tools and the best practice to deal with this digital input efficiently. Now that files can be generated by a variety of digital devices, and even

vivid-online.com

more pieces of software, it is important to know a little more about their make up before sending them too far down the print production line. However impatient the customer, a few minutes thoroughly assessing the file will save time and consequent money in the process. You cannot assume a customer, even a regular one, has not made some sort of mistake in creation and completion of a digital file, especially if it is a copy of an original. Sorting mistakes at source will solve a lot of awkward questions over whose actual error it was, and who is going to pay for it. Size, resolution and colour space, for example, are all possible issues as well as questions over missing links and fonts. Some of these may not be obvious until a job has been printed and then possibly rejected by the customer. That’s why checking the file while the customer is in the shop, or insisting on a proof print being approved, is really important. This is not always possible, especially as more work is sent directly, electronically by email or file sharing software and inevitably it’s wanted urgently. Vital to stress then that it is printed at the customer’s own liability. This may be going over old ground to regular readers, but indulge me as I am aware there are continually new ones, perhaps fresh to the digital print environment, who may take electronic information for granted and unquestioned. The biggest potential villain in this scenario is the ubiquitous PDF; created originally to provide a universal file format for documents that could be read on any device. Unfortunately, now that it can be produced out of a variety of software (And often in many different technical straints designed depending on its output intent – Dean Cook), it does not ensure that the quality or accuracy will be compatible with print. Everyone has an Acrobat Reader of one form or another, but simply opening a PDF in it will not give you many clues to its make up. Even if you can read it, it does not mean you can print what you see. There’s a big difference between simply ‘saving’ a file under the PDF format and ‘exporting’ a professionally produced version which is true to size, resolution (And includes relavant printers marks and colour profiling, Dean Cook). The problem may be further compounded if the PDF is imported directly into a layout template, like InDesign for example, where issues like embedded crop marks and even additional blank pages saved by accident can cause problems. It’s not Adobe’s fault that its child has been adopted by so many other programs and applications; it’s a victim of its own popularity. But bringing the software giant into the story completes the circle, because it is only with using professional software, and using it properly, that the print shop can take that important step ahead of its customers. Other software, of course, is available, and sometimes customers will delight in telling you they have a fabulous little design program they downloaded for free. But by and large, ‘you get what you pay’ for remains the reality. There was a fair amount of criticism from users when Adobe moved from selling its software to its current rental online policy, but overall this has some advantages. The private customer can pay on a monthly basis for a particular program, but a print shop, which will have multiple computers, can pick-and-mix what is required on which workspace. In the next column I will take a better look at how Adobe’s Creative Suite collection can be used most efficiently in workflow.

Looking back on a sustainable year

ARJOWIGGINS Graphic, a manufacturer of environmental paper solutions, has published its latest CSR report, detailing its industry leading milestones, ambitions to work towards a circular economy and its role in developing a more sustainable industry. Agnès Roger, Chief Executive of Arjowiggins Graphic comments: “When it comes to environmental and social responsibility every act counts, no matter how small. An industry like ours needs to give itself clear and ambitious targets and implement strategies to achieve them, one step at a time. At Arjowiggins Graphic, we have been implementing a sustainable development policy for several years that surpasses our customers’ expectations and the regulations in force, and we’ve seen this go from strength to strength in 2013.” The report, printed on Cocoon Silk 100% recycled paper, outlines: • One of the biggest highlights of 2013 was the successful implementation of the IS0 50001 certified energy management system at all of Arjowiggins Graphic’s Greenfield De-inking Plant, Le Bourray, Wizernes and Besse Paper Mills. This is the first multi-site ISO50001 certification to be issued in France. • In addition to being FSC certified, obtaining PEFC certification, the most widespread forestry certification in France, which makes it possible to further increase the company’s share of certified fibres, from 40% 2008 in to 85% in 2013, with an ambition to reach 100%. • Reducing the carbon footprint in its supply chain by increasing the maximum load for its lorries from 40 to 44 tonnes, resulting in the reduction of the number of trucks required in particular for its supply of pulp and waste papers for recycling. • Collecting €10,000 for the SOS Children’s Villages, which covers half of the costs of operating a water tower in Dafra, Burkina Faso, for a year and represents access to water for approximately 3,000 people. • WWF Climate Savers objectives helping to drive innovation resulting in increasing the business’ share of recycled paper production from 10-12% in 2009 to 50% in 2013. Arjowiggins Graphic has received a number of accolades in recognition of its sustainability efforts including the best internationally rated company in 2013 on the WWF Environmental Paper Company Index, and winning the French Champion of the Year at the European Business Awards for its work on the Cyclus campaign with SOS Children’s Villages. Canon rises in Best Global Green brands

CANON has risen to 26th place on the latest Interbrand Best Global Green Brands list, up from 30th place in 2013. The Interbrand report highlights Canon’s implementation of sustainable practices in 2012, including reducing CO2 emissions over entire product life cycles by nearly three times the company’s target, and collecting 310,000 tons of used toner cartridges globally since 1990, consequently reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 450,000 tons and avoiding the need for 201,000 tons of new resources. The annual Interbrand Best Global Green Brands report is based on consumer research designed to examine the gap that exists between a brand’s environmental performance and consumers’ perceptions of that performance. In Canon’s case, that perception has improved considerably and the Gap Score has narrowed to +3.8 from +6.56 in 2013. Susan Stuart, Sustainability Director, Canon Europe, Middle East and Africa, said: “Sustainability is a strategic imperative for Canon which is embedded deeply within our culture, as well as in our strategy and how we do business. Our approach is based on the Canon corporate philosophy of Kyosei, a Japanese word that means living and working together for the common good.” www.canon.co.uk

International Paper improves Water Footprint

Think Green, Think

● Mainly made from forest thinnings from sustainable forests and chippings from saw mills. ● Pulp and paper produced at the same site, minimising transportation.

INTERNATIONAL Paper announced earlier this year an investment of approx. Euro 20 MM into its Saillat Mill, located in the French Limousin region, to further reduce the facilities’ water emissions and offer customers an even more environmentally friendly product portfolio. The implementation of the project will commence this summer of 2014 and is expected to be completed in 2015. At its core, the investment involves advanced technology to extract an improved quality of fibre from wood by using a smoother process. The new process leaves fibres more intact resulting in even higher quality paper, and at the same time further reduces water emissions by another 30% from the already very good levels the Saillat mill is achieving today. “We’re well known as a leading manufacturer of entirely locally produced high quality value-added paper grades that meet the highest sustainability standards,” says Eric Chartrain, Vice President & General Manager for International Paper’s European papers business. “Generating a reduction of another 30% of the Saillat mill’s water emissions and supporting local manufacturing of a product that customers want, this investment is another example of International Paper’s commitment to bringing the sustainable and circular economy to life.” The investment will allow International Paper to offer an even greater choice of top notch products to customers. It follows other investments into the company’s service capabilities and modernisation of its paper machines at the Saillat facility in recent years. The project is supported by local and national French and European agencies, notably the European Union (through the Limousin Region) and the Loire-Brittany Water Agency. Located in the French Limousin region for over a century, the Saillat pulp and paper mill has been part of International Paper since 1989. Certified “Origine France Garantie”, it is the only integrated paper mill in France making uncoated wood free papers exclusively from locally sourced wood. The mill’s environmental performance is recognised with the EU Ecolabel, FSC and PEFC certifications; the site is also one of the best performing globally in terms of CO2 emissions. The Saillat mill is a key player locally: the site employs approximately 550 people and generates around 4,000 indirect jobs in the area. The mill uses only local wood sourced from within a maximum of 150 km around the mill and sells around half of its products locally in France. www.internationalpaper.com

Have it large – in fact have it extra large THEMAGICTOUCH confirm the introduction of new XL transfer paper fully compatible with selected A4 OKi printers. Using unique print driver options the new sized paper (220 x 420mm) assists to “bridge the gap” between A4 and A3 printers. The XL paper was originally developed by TheMagicTouch with CPM (nontextile) transfer paper as demand from customers using the process for full colour decoration of binders, folders, notebooks and diaries required full edge to edge transfer on their various products using A4 printer models. Having proved so popular the XL size is now available for TTC3.1 (for light textile) and the WoW7.7 (dark textile). Jim Nicol, Managing Director, stated “Our existing Space Control software and technical support enables customers to really develop and market their businesses using the low cost A4 printers. TheMagicTouch process with the various transfer paper options offers the user a vast range of garments and promotional product options. The new white toner technology has also made the transfer process simple and affordable especially when producing personalised samples for customer evaluation and the ability to produce short run production quickly and profitably”. The company has recently expanded their training and demonstration facility in Dunstable to keep up with the demand for this new technology. Jim Nicol added “the awareness of full colour printing on non-white products really has made some real impact especially with the new range of different colour mugs, notebooks and bottles” For further information please contact sales@themagictouch.co.uk or call 01582 671444

At QPP we are aware that there are many quick printers, or copy shops, as we are still widely known, who have just that number of staff and as such have slipped through the net. With the growing popularity of apprenticeships it is essential that you have a policy in place, as the organisation placing somebody with you is obliged to check the suitability of your workplace. In reply Cleese said that there were three basic differences from the British viewpoint: 1. ‘We speak English and you don’t.’ 2. ‘When we hold a World Championship for a particular sport, we invite teams from other countries to play, as well.’ 3. ‘When you meet the head of state in Great Britain, you only have to go down on one knee.’

TIME FLIES A young man, who was also an avid golfer, found himself with a few hours to spare one afternoon. He figured that if he hurried and played very fast, he could get in nine holes before he had to head home. Just as he was about to tee off, an old gentleman shuffled onto the tee and asked if he could accompany the young man as he was golfing alone. Not being able to say no, he allowed the old man to join him. To his surprise, the old man played fairly quickly. He didn’t hit the ball far, but plodded along consistently and didn’t waste much time. Finally, they reached the 9th fairway and the young man found himself with a tough shot. There was a large pine tree right in front of his ball and directly between his ball and the green. After several minutes of debating how to hit the shot, the old man finally said, “You know, when I was your age, I’d hit the ball right over that tree.” With that challenge placed before him, the youngster swung hard, hit the ball up, right smack into the top of the tree trunk and it thudded back on the ground not a foot from where it had originally laid. The old man offered one more comment, “Of course, when I was your age, that pine tree was only three feet tall.”

the mortician. ‘Yup, everyone in town knew he had two assholes. Every time we went to town, folks would say, ‘Here comes Clive with them two assholes!’’

MATHS PROVES ALL There were three Indian squaws. One slept on a deerskin, one slept on an elk skin and the third slept on a hippopotamus skin. All three became pregnant and the first two each had a baby boy. The one who slept on the hippopotamus skin had twin boys. This goes to prove that the squaw of the hippopotamus is equal to the sons of the squaws of the other two hides.

WHAT IS WITH PRINTERS AND POEMS? Ladies and gentlemen, hobos and tramps, Bug-eyed mosquitoes and bowlegged ants! I’m about to tell you a story I’ve never heard before, so pull up a chair and sit on the floor. Admission is free, so pay at the door. One fine day, in the middle of the night, two, dead boys got up to fight. Back to back, they faced each other, drew their swords and shot each other. A deaf policeman heard the noise, and saved the lives of the two dead boys. If you don’t believe my lies are true, ask the blind man, he saw it too!

a Roland user and proud of it. We’d recommend a Roland to anyone looking to buy. They’re brilliant. Over a period of 8 years we’ve bought 4 Roland machines. As we’ve grown Roland has always been the perfect choice, as we’ve stepped up in our printing needs. We have the utmost confidence in Roland, they’ve kept us running and every machine has always paid for itself within a matter of months. Tom E. Mclaughlin - KEW WORKSHOP www.kewworkshop.co.uk
