Canon Commercial Printing Business Days event

Christian Unterberger, Executive VicePresident of Océ Printing Systems, a Canon company, told 500 customers from 23 countries at a technology forum that more than 1,000 systems had been supplied worldwide. The guests attended the Canon Commercial Printing Business Days held in September. This future insights event involved live demonstrations, as well as workflow solutions, at Canon’s Customer Experience Centre at Poing, near Munich, Germany. Canon’s line-up of both Continuous Feed and Sheet Fed Inkjet solutions included the new Océ ColorStream Chroma and Océ VarioPrint i300, together with the first showing since drupa of the upgraded imaging system ColorGrip, the Océ ImageStream 2400 and Océ ImageStream 3500, the Océ VarioStream 4000 and the Océ VarioStream 7170. The complementary cut-sheet systems included Canon’s new toner-based full-colour flagship imagePRESS C1000VP and the monochrome Océ VarioPrint 6000. Finally, the DreamLabo 5000 for photobook printing was also featured. “It’s been a really interesting day,” said Colin Ray, Manufacturing Manager, Lightning Source UK. “Not only have I been given insights with live demonstrations of an array of systems in production print, but it’s good to see the partners such as those involved in finishing. The networking has also been extremely important and I’ve spoken to a lot of other Canon customers, including business owners from a variety of backgrounds. The highlight for me was the factory tour — what an array of systems that are produced at Poing!” Kevin Spindler is Director of Signature Gifts Ltd, a personalised gift company, which is an exclusive user of Canon print systems. “Visiting the production print manufacturing headquarters in Poing has been a real eye-

opening experience,” he said. “It has been really useful to see the latest technologies, as well as a glimpse into what the future will bring. Bearing in mind our production facilities are in a relatively remote location, the renowned reliability, quality and servicing of the systems is absolutely vital. It’s been a real partnership approach.” Another visitor to the event was Giles Lock, Managing Director of Top Print, based in

Alton, Hampshire. “The Canon Commercial Print Business Days’ event has been highly informative and a great opportunity to further assess both hardware and software options available from Canon,” said Giles. “Having installed two Canon C800 print engines linked to PRISMAPrepare in August, I was particularly interested in seeing what growth opportunities Canon envisaged. The presenters shared some interesting ideas and I found their presentations thought provoking. The event also provided a chance for me to reacquaint myself with some industry colleagues in a relaxing and welcoming environment; I’m very pleased to have been a guest once more.” Craig Nethercott, Director, Commercial Printing, Canon UK, said: “Our customers understand that Canon’s philosophy is about a true partnership and not just about selling printing systems. The feedback we receive at such events is that the Canon Customer Experience Centre provides the perfect platform to educate, network and for us to further engage by demonstrating our worldwide expertise and leadership in inkjet presses in both monochrome and colour www.canon.co.uk

Duplo secures new customer deals Duplo UK signed deals topping £400,000 and bagged an impressive pipeline of sales leads at The Print Show Birmingham. The “Book of 12” by Antalis Antalis has commissioned a project which sees respected writer and specialist in graphic design, Véronique Vienne, interviewing 12 contemporary graphic designers across 12 different countries and cultures in order to gauge their beliefs and concerns regarding the role of paper today in an increasingly digital age. The result is the “Book of 12” — a collection of 12 notebooks offering an example of each of the 12 graphic designer’s work, produced on a range of beautiful, creative papers supplied by Antalis. The Book of 12 project was inspired by simple questions for the designers of today: is the choice of paper still a creative act? Does it contribute to the impact of a message, an idea or a concept? To answer these questions, Véronique Vienne interviewed 12 graphic designers from cultural institutions, as well as brand experts and heads of advertising agencies. Their answers, as well as being enlightening and inspiring, reveal that they all consider paper to be an integral part of the creative process:Daniel Eatock (England) started out as a graphic designer but is now an established artist exhibiting around the world: “Paper has six sides: a front, a back, and four edges… a blank piece of paper has infinite potential — you can do so many things with it: you can write on it, draw on it, paint on it, fold it, cut it, etc.” Milton Glaser (USA) is probably the most famous graphic designer in the United States, well known for his “I ♥ NY logo” and his 1967 Bob Dylan poster: “When it comes to paper, people associate authenticity with tactility.” He regrets the fact that designers often no longer draw their ideas on paper but seek ready-made images. “For me, it is the most extraordinary encounter: a rough surface — paper — that accepts the trace of a writing tool. For a designer, it is the fundamental engagement.” Hans Wolbers (The Netherlands) is an art director and founder of one of Holland’s leading design agencies known for its talent in creating and developing smart and trendy editorial publications: “This is how I choose paper: as part of the initial concept.” And perhaps surprisingly, he confirms that: “The people who use the most paper in our company are the web designers…they need paper to think. It is so much faster than digital tools.” Reza Abedini (Iran) designs posters, book covers, and announcements to promote events in the Arab World but also in the Netherlands, France, Ireland, Greece, or England: “When an idea starts to form in my mind, its paper manifests itself at the same time…I consider the type of paper, its colour, its weight, and its texture, a main part of each project… not just the surface on which the design is printed.”

Michal Batory (Poland) designs surrealist, visually-arresting concepts for posters: “If you pick the wrong paper, there is no magic…I am aware of how different the results can be, depending on the nature of the surface on which they are printed.” Catherine Zask (France) is a graphic artist, poster designer and writer in love with paper: “The pleasurable sensation that you experience when handling paper becomes associated with the message printed on it.” She adds: “I do not have a favourite paper — the ultimate choice depends on the design, the client’s personality, and the message.” Elaine Ramos (Brazil) is a graphic designer, as well the art director at Cosac Naify, the main publishing house in Brazil dedicated to visual arts: “I think of the texture of the paper as an essential piece of information to share a message, an idea, a concept or an impression with readers…the paper will determine the flexibility of a book — it’s a critical choice.” Leonardo Sonnoli (Italy) focuses primarily on the visual identity of public institutions and private companies: “It’s easier to feel that you can own a message when it is printed on paper…for a great result, the quality of the paper is almost always as important as the quality of the design.” Eike König (Germany) specialises in developing visual languages for brands, large and small, and creating visual identities for cultural institutions: “Deciding on a paper is as important as choosing a typeface or a colour.” And: “While working in front of computers fosters isolation, working with paper invites experimentation, participation and socialisation.” Park Kum-jun (South Korea) is the awardwinning founder of his own design agency

who creates catalogues, exhibition posters, calendars, magazine covers and conceptual installations: “Paper instils emotions into content and form, so I select the paper in the pre-planning stage. Sometimes, an entire plan or idea starts and grows from a specific type of paper…my work on paper gives away its mystery gradually, one discovery at a time.” Flavia Cocchi (Switzerland) focuses on typography. Printed matter is her love and paper is her passion: “I am in heaven when paper representatives come in to show me their latest designs.” She always begins a project with the choice of paper: “It’s what triggers my creativity.” Kaija Korpijaakko (Finland) previously held several positions as a magazine art director and now works as an artist, with paper still her favourite medium: “Better, heavier, and glossier paper was the ultimate reward.” She adds: “Paper is here to stay — it will just be perceived differently. Instead of being a surface on which to print text and images, it will be “recast” as a creative medium — as an exciting material for artists and designers.” The full interviews have been captured in individual notebooks, each showcasing a piece of the artists’ work with a unique design, choice of paper and printing technique to bring it to life. Ian Webb, marketing director for Antalis, comments: “We are naturally convinced of the inherent added value of paper, not only in terms of its sensory qualities and better memorisation capacity, but also by the extra impact it can bring to a concept or message. The transcript of the interviews, a recorded interview with Véronique Vienne, as well as a video following the “making of” the Book of 12, can all be found on a dedicated website. www.bo12.com • www.antalis.co.uk

PROKOM setting its sights on going global PROKOM, the independent community of Konica Minolta production printing users, is setting its sights on becoming a global organisation following a successful launch in the USA and Europe. PROKOM had its official debut in the US at Graph Expo last month. The response was ‘fantastic’, according to organisers, who are now actively recruiting membership through www.prokom.org Companies across Europe and USA are joining the community of Konica Minolta production printing users, which was first launched in February 2014. Members can connect, learn and grow their business approaches through a mixture of online support and training. These initiatives include market insights from Infotrends, as well as a host of independent consultants. The aim is to lead business transformation, providing practical business advice and learning to individuals across a print business through its knowledge platform. Easy to use, the web-portal targets content and practical advice to key departments within a print business. These include key functions such as pre-press departments, production, HR, business strategy for owners as well as sales and marketing functions. Every key function within a print business covered with practical tools, insight and plans to help them transform their approaches. A series of major initiatives, including an inaugural annual conference next year in Vienna from May 10-12, are being planned by the PROKOM team. They will be fully backed and supported by Konica Minolta as part of its commitment to the community that has an independent board of directors. Mark Hinder, Head of Market Development, Konica Minolta Business Solutions Europe, said: “Following successful activities we ran at drupa 2016 and now the launch of PROKOM USA, the team focus now shifts to demonstrating the value of PROKOM as a community that is being built to enable members to connect, learn and grow their businesses. It is important that we help lead business transformation through our commitment to the PROKOM community so that our customers can adapt to the change taking place in the print industry. “PROKOM is a strategic initiative from Konica Minolta that provides a proactive platform for customers to shape their ideas in the production printing industry to which we are fully committed. We have been listening

to our customers’ needs to help empower them to transform and adapt.” Customers can register online for free as a blue member which provides all users insight and content to grow their approaches. The aim is they will then upgrade to Elite for the full range of benefits from e-learning and access to webinars, podcast and business tools. Andy Barber, Chairman of PROKOM, said: “For Elite membership we wanted to ensure that every company could easily gain access to gain the most out PROKOM, not putting learning out of reach by having expensively priced courses. We felt by having just one flat fee, which is less than 34 euros per month, we can demonstrate the strong proposition and value of PROKOM to deliver effective programmes, which are within the reach of all print companies.” The PROKOM board members are Chairman Andy Barber, Director imail, UK Mail PLC; Andy Fry, Managing Director, Nova Direct, UK; Arndt Eschenlohr, Managing Director of OvernightPrints Europe GmbH; Thierry Paquit, Managing Director of Identic, Belgium; and Christian Kopocz, Founder of prindoz.com, Germany. www.prokom.org

Royal Flavour for Duplo’s London Calling VIII Duplo’s perfect ‘follow-up’ to drupa had a distinct international and royal flavour with the London Calling VIII event attracting almost 200 people to its headquarters remodelled as a 16th century palace. Visitors were treated to a feast of live workflow and print demonstrations at the print application event, which demonstrated to customers and other guests how they can add value and increase revenue through faster, smarter and better finishing solutions. Duplo’s HQ, usually known as Automation Precision House, was renamed ‘Automated Precision Palace’. New at Duplo’s London Calling VIII was the iSaddle2 — building on the success of the industry-leading iSaddle saddle stitching family — and an official unveiling in the UK of a new Ricoh Inline Booklet System. There was also the UK preview of the PFi DI-CUT 300 die cutter — one live application involved cutting out ‘crowns’ — being launched next

Tuesday [October 11] at The Print Show, NEC, Birmingham, as well as other innovations. Duplo Owners’ Club members also met at the

‘palace’ on the morning of the event that started at noon. Peter Jolly, Managing Director of Duplo UK, said: “It’s been the perfect follow up to drupa — people from 25 countries. Premier’s Phil Waters celebrates over 50 years The Premier Paper Group has announced that Phil Waters, who works out of its Cheltenham and Bristol sales offices, is celebrating over half a century in the paper merchanting sector, and would love to carry on in the industry for another 50 years! Phil enjoyed a successful rugby career spanning 14 years (approximately 300 games) playing as both a winger and as a centre at high level rugby; which saw him win three championships with three different teams — Newport, Pontypool and Bristol. Phil’s debut game was for Newport in November 1968 alongside some well respected international players. The ‘Black & Ambers’ took on Cambridge University, Speaking fondly of his time on the pitch Phil recounts “I enjoyed my time playing rugby. Playing a team sport at such a high level helped me to understand and appreciate the value of working as part of a team. That is something that I have taken with me throughout my life.” The highlights of Phil’s rugby career include a tour of South Africa in 1979 with Newport and playing against the All Blacks in 1980 to celebrate the Welsh centenary, facing the Hakka is something he will never forget. Phil’s rugby career sadly came to an end in 1982 after suffering an injury during a match against Llanelli. Phil who began his career in the paper industry as a van driver and warehouseman with South Wales Paper, has said it’s all down to his good looks and awful jokes that he tells that he has survived this long in the industry. Having stayed with South Wales Paper for over 20 years, progressing to outside sales and becoming a minority shareholder, Phil then moved on to Donald Murray Paper, where he was responsible for establishing their Bristol office from scratch. He then joined Fyne Papers, where he first met current Premier Paper Group Chairman, Graham Griffiths. Whilst at Fyne Papers, Phil turned the Bristol office into the most profitable within the company, and was named Manager of the Year twice during his tenure. When Fyne Papers, part of Arjo UK Merchants merged with Wiggins Teape to form Antalis, Phil then moved on to Beswick Paper, having been recommended by his good friend and Premier Paper Group

Marketing Director, David Jones, where he was once again reunited with Graham. Following the acquisition of Premier, Phil has continued to work out of the Cheltenham and Bristol sales offices, developing a loyal customer base across the South Wales region. I’ve got by on three bits of advice which has stood with me all my career,” said Phil. “Be yourself, never tell lies and always do your best.” Phil concluded, “Paper merchanting has been very good to me, and I owe it a great deal. I always try to do whatever I can to get the job done and always with a sense of humour.” Congratulations Phil, and here’s to many more years and more jokes to come. www.paper.co.uk

as WiFi and cloud connectivity, and a motion sensor for quicker wake-up times, with a sophisticated solutions platform.

Intec adds ‘flare’ to digitally printed media Adding to Intec’s growing range of unique print and finishing solutions the ColorFlare made its debut at The Print Show ColorFlare - For the first time in the UK, Intec showcased the finishing effects achievable on its ColorFlare unit using a range of lamination films, spot gloss films and special effect ‘flaring’ foils. The ColoFlare is a compact and environmentally friendly dual laminator and foil flaring device designed to offer commercial printers, marketers and designers in-house decorative effects for short run, on-demand digital applications, as well as lamination for traditional litho output. Using state of the art technology, combined with pneumatic pressure, the Intec ColorFlare delivers up to 35.5 newtons/mm enabling superior bonding and faster production times — compared to standard systems - and with its fast, easy set-up the ColorFlare becomes a low cost solution to add ‘flare’ to print. Coupled with the ColorSplash colour digital printer, the ColorFlare can foil flare directly onto printed toner and also onto lamination films creating extra special effects without expensive set up charges. Not limiting themselves to promoting this with the ColorSpash units only, Intec offers the ColorFlare to anyone who has a digital printer from any one of today’s major printer manufacturers. Digital print can be ‘flared’ with lamination films and a wide range of coloured, metallised and holographic foils from Intec’s consumables offering. A selection of different widths and lengths of the lamination films can be chosen to add depth and value to printed items but the real magic comes when these lamination films can be overprinted to add foil ‘flaring’ to packaging, sheet labels and print opening up new opportunities for the production of vouchers, security print, packaging and labels etc. “The ColorFlare is a must have system for digital printers wanting to add value to their print offering” states Ian Melville, managing director at Intec Printing Solutions. “This device provides users with the ability to produce stunning finishes to their print, creating a wide reaching profit potential for commercial printers by opening profitable new income earning streams.” By combining a ColorFlare with a ColorSplash digital printer the results are limitless! www.intecprinters.com

All four high-speed models feature a simplified user interface that is accessed via a 10.1” LCD touchscreen, an out of the box pull printing solution, and the ability to replace toner and paper without stopping a print job, helping to maintain high levels of productivity in the office. Elia Giovanni, Head of Marketing SBSUK, said “Feedback tells us that features such as the standard pull-printing function and faster wake-up times have resulted in improved efficiencies for our customers, so by combining these features with high speeds, businesses are guaranteed optimum productivity for a wider variety of tasks.” All four models are available now from Sharp partners across the UK. www.sharp.co.uk

Intec unveil the ColorCut 500 Intec Printing Solutions introduced the ColorCut digital die cutter for sheet labels and packaging at The Print Show. The ColorCut 500 adds to Intec’s growing range of unique print and finishing solutions for the label market. Targeted at the light production sector the ColorCut can produce an SRA3/ tabloid extra sheet of labels in 30-40 seconds, depending on label complexity. This enables users to produce between 10-1,000 sheets per day offering a quick turnaround of sheet labels. Powered by an automatic vacuum feed pick up and pneumatic fingers, with variable suction control, the ColorCut can be tuned to cut and perforate different media types and thicknesses at the twist of a knob or touch of a button for complex die-cutting of any shape label and different cuts in one pass. Lifting and advancing one sheet at a time, the ColorCut combines air separation jets to eliminate mis-feeds caused by static. Vision Control productivity software allows

the operator to easily define the quantity of labels and proceeds to produce label sheets, unattended saving both time and money. Using advanced digital contour cutting technology to follow drawn cut lines in CorelDRAW or Adobe Illustrator, there is no need to send out for dies to be made, or to wait while they are produced. Digital cutting is an ‘on-demand’ process, simply click ‘CUT’ and your labels are produced to any shape, direct from your desktop. The integrated high quality imaging camera provides vision-based registration technology to detect registration marks on the label sheet ensuring crisp accurate cut lines. Mark Baker-Homes, director of product development states “It’s the perfect complement to your digital colour printer offering automatic cut sheet labels, custom greeting cards and prototype packaging.” Coupling the ColorCut with the ColorSplash digital colour printer or indeed any other major manufacturer’s digital printing device provides users with a low cost, versatile solution for producing quick turnaround labels, intricate cards and packaging. www.intecprinters.com

Enhancements to Xerox Colour C60/C70 Now quick print shops, in-plant operations, agencies, small businesses and manufacturers can enhance and expand the applications they create with increased substrate flexibility and greater image quality accuracy. Software updates and feature enhancements to Xerox’s popular Colour C60/C70 Printer are opening application opportunities to print environments of any size. Updates and enhancements include: *Better media and paper weight management: New capabilities make it easier to handle an even wider range of substrates to include lightweight media (60 gsm) often used to reduce postage or courier costs along with heavier, more challenging stocks (256 gsm two sided/300 gsm one sided) used for cards or invitations. The new Paper Catalogue, an on-line library of substrate attributes, makes the creation of high quality mixed media applications even simpler and quicker. *Improved accuracy and image quality: Now integrated into the device, Simple Image Quality Adjustment (SIQA) helps maintain registration and support difficult jobs like two-sided business cards. The upgraded device also has Closed Loop Process Controls which translates to higher quality printing with less operator involvement.

*Enhanced workflow and automation: Unique to a device in this class are new digital front ends including FreeFlow Print Server with new production colour management tools. A first in the industry, the new EFI Fiery NX station featuring Fiery QuickTouch technology that enables high-end production colour management on an entry device. “Customers will find added value in what we’ve done to the award winning Xerox Colour C60/C70 Printer, especially the widened application range and boosted productivity levels,” said Anna Askels, European Product Marketing Manager, Xerox. “We’ve kept the small footprint and entry level pricing but added features normally associated with our high-end production printers.” The Xerox Colour C60/C70 was awarded the 2016 Buyers Laboratory Production Printer PRO Award for its reliability and above average colour stability on both uncoated and coated media. It now offers even greater accuracy and media flexibility. The Xerox Colour C60/C70 is available for order taking from October 2016. Customers already operating a Xerox Colour C60/C70 can upgrade the software and components to include the new enhancements. www.xerox.co.uk

Vivid worldwide debuts at The Print Show Vivid Laminating Technologies used The Print Show to launch new models of its award-winning Matrix Laminating Systems, introduce new colours of its special effect foils and debut a completely unique technology.

Matrix Systems

A double-sided 370 Duplex system was shown for the first time at The Print Show. Able to laminate, foil and create Spot UV-style effects on SRA3 portrait sheets, the new system is a smaller format model of the award-winning 530 version. According to Vivid, there has been a huge demand for a smaller double-sided laminator from both end-users and the companies network of distributors in the UK and worldwide. Vivid launched the Auto-Feeder for the 530 models at drupa earlier this year. Such has been the success of the retrofit system, all SRA3 portrait models can now also be fully automated with the new 370 Auto-Feeder, with The Print Show marking the exclusive launch of the new add-on. The Matrix is ideal for short-to-medium run jobs, and with the AutoFeeder now available across the complete range, prints can be top loaded ‘on the run’, saving both time and money. Boss Special Effect Foils, Metallised Print and Spot UV Film

Vivid’s Boss Premium Foil range allows metallised effects to be added to packaging and print. The foiling and over printable coloured foils work by combining the Matrix and a digital printer. With foils already available in a huge range of colours, The Print Show saw Vivid launch a number of new finishes. The new over printable holographic foil can produce incredible print effects and its new pure white foil essentially replicates the ability to ‘print white’.

Easycoat and Easyguide

Vivid has asked whether customers would see an immediate business benefit to their products feeling thicker when digitally printed and state they have the solution. The firm introduced two new technologies at the show. The new Easycoat is a SRA3-size gluing system that adds a layer of adhesive to media. Layers can then be added one-by-one to create a thick substrate that can be used for many applications, including book covers and luxury, high quality business cards. The glued layers are then placed in the new Easyguide, a unique carrier tray which can then be passed through the Easymount, adhering and fixing the glued layers in place by using the systems mounting capabilities. The patented Easyguide gives an incredible level of accuracy and precision. www.vivid-online.com

PIXEL PROPHET

A PERFECT 10? If you are a Windows user, like a large portion of the world’s computer owners, then you have probably recently been upgraded to Windows 10, whether you wanted to or not. And although much of the updated software is inevitably beneficial, Martin Christie says there are some niggling problems which particularly affect the professional user.

[I]

’m no expert, but as an interested participant, it seems to me that most of the progression from Windows 7, through the disastrous Windows 8 — which was so bad they didn’t dare name the successor windows 9 — has been to make it more ‘user friendly’ and familiar to those whose introduction to the technology has come through phones and tablets. Previously there was an established learning curve to grasping the working practise of this complex work tool, an understanding of the hardware and the software, and a whole new language to cover the many new skills needed. The specialists in information technology (IT as it was more familiarly named) were almost a breed apart — the priests of a new cult in a world where everything was in Latin, incomprehensible to the ordinary customer. Now, IT is in everybody’s hands…literally. It hasn’t been dumbed down. The computing potential of the average phone today would outstrip many a desktop computer of a decade ago. What has been made more simple is the actual interface, where human meets machine, and how tasks are performed. Instead of a daunting view of operational tasks, we have a screen that wants to guide us through all the things we want to do, in fact even anticipate what we want to do long before we thought of it. This has been a complete change of direction as you can only appreciate if you started in the days of Windows 98, or before, in the last century. It seems like the dark ages now, and to the latest post-school generation will be as obscure as ancient history. Then the progression of operating systems got more sophisticated, and more complicated, as the processors became more powerful. But it assumed a considerable amount of previous experience and knowledge, or expected a certain amount of training, for whoever was going to be at the controls. It also meant a certain amount of professional respect — even if at times grudging respect — for those who had mastered this technology, from those who had not. I certainly remember clearly

my painful learning curve, as a photographer, from analogue to digital. Northing was made easy. Every small step was a massive hurdle. The positive side of this steep learning curve is that it has given me a broad range of experience dealing with all sorts of digital issues, not just with images, but any electronic files. As I said, not an expert, but experienced. That can count for a lot as often problems don’t need the complicated solutions which the technical often seek to apply first. My digital evolution, at first frustrating, has proved to be fruitful and in many ways exciting, finding myself well towards the sharp end of the cutting edge of modern photography and inkjet printing. But it has also given me a healthy amount of scepticism about many of the developments, and a suspicion, based on that experience that for every two steps forward, there may be one step back. Windows 10 seems to be one of those staggered movements. In the short time since its introduction there have been several major updates, and some of those seem to have caused major problems with other pieces of both hardware and software, as well as causing inconvenience by suddenly deciding to perform the update at the least welcome time. These problem updates have also coincided

with the end of Microsoft’s free upgrade offer which has not gone down well among many vocal users on the operator’s forums. The latest, and largest update, the so-called Anniversary Update, has hardly been cause for celebration. Mircosoft itself had to issue a statement in August that “Windows 10 may freeze after installing the Anniversary Update” and “on systems with the operating system stored on a solid-state drive (SSD) and apps and data stored on a separate drive. This issue does not occur when starting Windows 10 in Safe Mode. If you are experiencing this issue, we will be providing updates to this thread…We ask for your patience while we continue our investigation and please check back on this thread for an update.” ‘Safe mode’ will be a state familiar to ancient users of Windows 98 as it was a regular option when the system crashed, but how many current users would know where to find it, let alone know what to do with it. And almost every business user will have solid state drives and data stored on external ones. The problem is that there is no one problem that can be easily fixed, but that there are a number of random ones which may be particular to the users own computer and hardware. In the digital studio the work station may be connected to any number of devices, directly or via a network,

Quick Print Pro • Digital Imaging

November 2016

and any of them may be affected in operation. The issue may also include software, so that if a particular program is running slow, or behaving strangely, it may not be the fault of that program or the file. Of course, I show my age by using the word ‘program’. We don’t have programs anymore, we have apps; all part of making the computer operation seem user-friendly and familiar to the modern eye. They still do the same job, just under another name, but changing the name doesn’t make them any less complicated in reality in relationship to the whole working device. In simple terms, Windows 10 is a major step to make the operating system control all of the functions of the computer, something it did passively before, but now more directly. In order to cut down all that wasted time wondering how to do something, Windows 10 will simply make the decision for you. It will pull up files you have recently used, anticipating that you may want to view them again. It will remind you of tasks you have recently done, assuming that you will want to do them again. This is all very well if you live in a simple world and want to perform simple tasks instantly. If you are in a more complicated environment, say a busy digital print studio, it may not be so beneficial when it may directly interrupt efficient work flows. After the last Windows 10 update my Epson scanner disappeared. It’s quite a big A3 scanner, and I knew it was there because I could see it on the next desk, but it was no longer on the desktop. Initially I thought it was a problem with the scanner, which often needs a restart to configure its settings. But I discovered that the Epson software hard actually been overridden by Windows Image Acquisition Service. Thank you Microsoft, but I didn’t want that as much as I didn’t want the annoying paper clip man that used to pop up to see if I needed help (only older readers will appreciate that image). It’s as if now, instead of asking if you need help, Windows just assumes you do and is therefore doing you a favour by taking the decision out of your hands. Reinstalling the very excellent Epson scan software put control back in my hands, and not in the grip of Microsoft’s Mickey Mouse alternative, but I have had to do that three times now and I am getting bored of doing so. I now have to spend time seeing if I can block some parts of the updates, most of which are compulsory. That’s

the rub — you have to accept it and then work out if you need it. That’s been my experience with Window’s 10 so far, but all I can advise is that if you are having any unusual issues, do check the user help forums to see if there are similar problems and fixes.

Adobe adapts

Fortunately Adobe’s updates are almost entirely beneficial, and if you are using the Creative Cloud option, at least you are given the choice of what to install and when to do it. And even if you are in the process of updating, you can still carry on with whatever it was you were doing! Adobe has been able to adapt programs, sorry apps, like Photoshop to the changing working demands, while still retaining familiar controls and features. Some of the old basic features, while they are retained, are virtually made redundant by better options, but Adobe keep them in the workspace for those that still want to cling to old ways. Much like getting into a modern car, all the basic features like the steering wheel and the pedals are in the same place even if some of the switches are a bit confusing. In recent issues, I’ve illustrated how to use one of most useful features, layers, to perform creative editing of images for improvement or restoration. This month’s quick tip is more simple and the most functional; using layers to correct exposure and colour for printing. Everyone who works in a print shop today will know the problem of customers images being too dark or with an unfortunate colour hue; either because they have been taken on their phone, or edited on some device with a bright, high contrast screen, often in strong sunlight. Whatever printer you are using, whether

Thought foiling & spot UV was expensive?

23

digital toner press or inkjet, you will have a pretty good idea of how the vision you can see on your screen will translate sent to any particular printer. In the old days of the copy shop, it was very much suck it and see, with many attempts on the platen to lighten, or darken or add magenta. If you don’t use Photoshop and print, say from Acrobat Reader, then you haven’t progressed much from those days because it’s only the options at the printer end — in the preferences dialogue box — that you can use. Using Photoshop you can make corrections at source and save a lot of time. In Photoshop there are a wide choice of controls for brightness, contrast, exposure and the like, as well as all manner of colour hues. They all work slightly differently on individual pixels, and some are more accurate than others. The best way to use any of them is not to apply them to the original image; this is called destructive editing and will take you round in ever decreasing circles till you go mad. The best way is to create an identical duplicate layer above the original and apply any changes to that. That way you can easily go back to the original to compare and see where you started from, and even control the level of the changes by altering the opacity of the layer above. There are even blending options in the layers that will allow you to make more drastic changes. Quite a useful one for lightening an image is Screen. At 100 per cent this will usually bleach out the image, but if you bring the opacity right down you can usually do some fine tuning without destroying any of the precious pixels underneath. Alternatively you can darken by using the blend Multiply. A more in depth peer into layers next month.

Think Green, Think Leading by example, BrunelPrint is offering customers print and promotional materials that are completely carbon neutral — at no extra cost. BrunelPrint and its on-line arm Brunelone were the first printing firm in the UK to offer every print product this way — as standard — and without charging anything extra. The firm has worked with ClimatePartner to ensure that not only its print processes, but also its entire business — from websites to delivery — has no impact on the environment. ClimatePartner has helped Brunel to assess the impact of its business and has worked with Brunel to find two projects — one in Western Kenya, and one in Papua New Guinea, which Brunel will help to fund as part of its carbon offsetting. As part of its move to making its entire business climate-friendly, Brunel commissioned research into why companies don’t already buy ‘green’ print. It found that most companies believed it cost more, and their clients wouldn’t pay the extra — and a third were not aware that environmentally friendly print was even possible. To mark its transition into becoming a completely climate-neutral business, BrunelPrint commissioned a white paper detailing the case for green print, and providing more information on its projects. John Tugman, director of commercial print at BrunelPrint, said: “There are a lot of misconceptions about what it means to be environmentally-friendly in the printing world — and a perception that it is always going to cost more. For us, now, there is no question: this is the only way we print - all of our printing and promotional materials, all of our processes and our entire business will not have a negative effect on the environment — and it won’t cost our customers any more. We believe this is simply the right, responsible way to do business.” As well as this, BrunelPrint is certified to the ISO14001 environmental standard, which means it minimises how all its operational processes impact the environment. Its print machinery and technology is cutting edge, and sourced from the world’s top manufacturers who consider environmental impact in every aspect of design, build and operation. Brunel is also certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest certification (PEFC). These support sustainable management of forests, and mean that every sheet of paper they use can be traced back to its source. www.brunelprint.com johnt@brunelprint.com • n.hancock@climatepartner.com

UK DYSS Sales Rocket for AG/CAD

A combination of superlative performance, high quality engineering and market beating prices have helped the DYSS X7 and X5 become the machines to reckon with in the digital cutter world. UK sales of the DYSS models, supplied by AG/CAD Limited, more than doubled last year and this success has already been repeated in 2016, across a variety of market sectors including packaging; POS/POP display; print, sign and graphics; as well as more specialised applications. Print, signage and POS company, Projects &

Print invested in the 3m long DYSS X7-1630. Director Chris Parker was impressed with the speed, precision and ability to cut 50m length rolls. Turnover has increased 25% since the DYSS was installed. Thames Graphics purchased a DYSS X7 2230C which has greatly reduced production time for the business, as company director, Alex Povey, explains: “Cutting large boards was an increasing challenge which meant we were either turning work away or subcontracting it out to external suppliers. We knew that a digital cutting machine would open new doors for us.” Anytech, a cardboard engineering and print specialist from Swindon acquired a DYSS X5-1310T to work alongside their Xerox and Roland digital printers, and enabling all of the company’s print finishing to be done in-house, giving them a competitive edge on turnaround and price. Kent based Windsor specialise in large format printing and invested in a DYSS X7-2616 giving them the ability to produce bespoke cut pieces

You need to download this book Last month we invited all QPP readers to download a very helpful book. We printed ours and have passed round the whole print team to inspire and learn from. Route1Print has created a free eBook to help Print Resellers discover new ways to grow their business. The eBook, named ‘The Print Shop Revolution’, provides actionable tips to help print and copy shops diversify their offering and expand their current services. Brand Manager Jack Wilmot said the eBook demonstrates Route1Print’s philosophy to support print resellers in all areas of their business. “Most trade printers only focus on price, which although important, only encourages the market to engage in a race to the bottom. We wanted to provide a genuinely useful resource for our clients that proposes innovative ways to expand their services

of any shape, whether it’s point of sale, window display or exhibition work. Point of sale and display company, Daytona Visual Marketing continued a relationship with AG/CAD that has spanned nearly two decades when they ordered an X5-1630C with fully automatic sheet feeder this year to increase throughput and workflow. The DYSS has met all their targets and has taken 2-3 days off their lead times. Another Kent company, British Loose Leaf, whose core business is presentation products such as ring binders and lever arch files took on an X5-1310T for production quality samples and bespoke projects. Large format, display and packaging manufacturers, Leach Print from Oxfordshire and Impact Design and Print in Hampshire, use their new DYSS X7s for sampling and production of POS, exhibition graphics, banners, signage and more for their large customer bases. www.dyss-uk.com

and compete in the print market.” The eBook focusses on diversification, relationship building and instore experience as methods for print and copy shops to grow without competing on price alone. Mr Willmott adds that “the book isn’t meant to be a ‘how-to’ manual, but rather a source of ideas to explore. We like to support our clients as if they were a franchise, without tying them to us with a contract or mandating how they run their business.” To form the content, Route1Print researched the problems that print shops face at length, and tackled those issues one by one over the three chapters. It addresses methods to cultivate local relationships, nurture customer loyalty and personalise services to institutionalise print shops in their communities. The Print Shop Revolution is another addition to the array of reseller tools available on the Route1Print site, as a series of resources built to achieve their goal as print partners with clients. READERS’ SCRIBES

SOMETHING TO SHARE…? A Delicacy An American touring Spain stopped at a local restaurant following a day of sightseeing. While sipping his sangria, he noticed a sizzling, scrumptious looking platter being served at the next table. Not only did it look good, the smell was wonderful. He asked the waiter, “What is that you just served?” The waiter replied, “ Ah senor, you have excellent taste! Those are bulls testicles from the bullfight this morning. A delicacy!” The American, though momentarily daunted, said, “What the hell, I’m on vacation! Bring me an order!” The waiter replied, “I am so sorry senor. There is only one serving per day because there is only one bullfight each morning. If you come early tomorrow and place your order, we will be sure to save you this delicacy!” The next morning, the American returned, placed his order, and then that evening he was served the one and only special delicacy of the day. After a few bites, and inspecting the contents of his platter, he called to the waiter and said, “These are delicious, but they are much, much smaller than the ones I saw you serve yesterday!” The waiter shrugged his shoulders and replied, “Si senor. Sometimes the bull wins.”

As You Wish I told my kids I never want to live in a vegetative state, dependent on some machine and fluids from a bottle. So they unplugged my computer and threw out my wine.

Days of the Year Yesterday was “take your daughters and sons to work day”... Which basically means today is “stay late at work to catch up on all the things you couldn’t get done because your kid was bothering you in the print shop day”!

Detailed Cleaning

I asked a friend of mine by phone what he was doing. He told me he couldn’t talk because he was working on “aqua-thermal treatment of ceramics, aluminium, and steel while under a dangerously constrained environment.” I was impressed. Until the following day when I learned that meant he was “washing dishes with hot water under his upset wife’s supervision.”

More one-liners from your crazy print minders

Q: How do you organise a space party? A: You planet! Q: What did the leopard say after eating his owner? A: Man, that hit the “spot.” Q: What do you call a sleeping bull? A: A bulldozer! Q: What do you call security guards working outside Samsung shops? A: Fire Guardians of the Galaxy. Q: What do you call having your grandma on speed dial? A: Instagram. Q: Why did the banana go to the Doctor? A: Because it was not peeling well. Q: Why is England the wettest country? A: Because the queen has reigned here for years! Q: What belongs to you but others use more? A: Your name Q: Why do fish live in salt water? A: Because pepper makes them sneeze! Q: Why did the man put his money in the freezer? A: He wanted cold hard cash!

Help from the law

“Hello, police station? I’ve lost my cat and… “ “I’m sorry lady, but this is not a police job, you can try calling…” “But you don’t understand, this is a very intelligent cat. He is almost human. He can practically talk.” “Well, in that case ma’am, you’d better hang up. He may be trying to call you right now.”

Baseball Fanatic

My wife claims I’m a baseball fanatic. She says all I ever read about is baseball. All I ever talk about is baseball. All I ever think about is baseball. I told her she’s way off base!

We Can’t Find Anywhere to Live

John and Tony were in the bar, pondering over Tony’s problems. “Andrea and I want to get married,” said Tony, “but we can’t find anywhere to live.” “Why don’t you live with Andrea’s parents for a while?” suggested John. “We can’t do that,” said Tony, “they’re living with their parents for a while too.”

Joke sent in by CADMAN USA

While visiting Annapolis, a lady tourist noticed several students on their hands and knees assessing the courtyard with pencils and clipboards in hand. “What are they doing?” she asked the tour guide. “Each year,” he replied with a grin, “the upperclassmen ask the freshmen how many bricks it took to finish paving this courtyard.” When they were out of earshot of the freshmen, the curious lady asked the guide: “So, what’s the answer?” The guide replied: “One.”

Keep Up With Modern Communications

I went into my local wireless store looking for a solution to a problem. “I have a horse that I can’t seem to get going when I mount him,” I told the customer service representative. “Nellie won’t listen to my commands, and when she does start moving, it’s just a slow, lazy trot.” “I have just what you need for your phone,” the rep replied. “And what would that be?” “The latest version of the “GiddyApp!”

The Importance of Punctuation

I’m not the easiest guy in the world to get along with. So when our anniversary rolled around, I wanted my wife to know how much I appreciated her tolerating me for the past 20 years. I ordered flowers and told the florist to enclose a card that read, ‘Thanks for putting up with me so long.’ When my wife got the delivery, she called me at work. “Just where do you think you going?” she asked. “What do you mean?” I said. She read the card aloud as the florist had written it: “Thanks for putting up with me. So long.”

A: A Bed Q: What is the difference between a school teacher and a train? A: The teacher says spit your gum out and the train says “chew chew chew”. Q: Why did the birdie go to the hospital? A: To get a tweetment. Q: Why did the cross-eyed teacher lose her job? A: Because she couldn’t control her pupils? Q: What do you call someone who is afraid of Santa? A: A Clausterphobic More questions than answers Q: I can run but not walk, have a mouth but can’t talk, and a bed, but I do not sleep. What am I? A: A River.

Knock Knock

A policeman knocked on my door this morning, but I just locked it and sat there in complete silence. After 20 seconds he knocked again, but I just continued to ignore it. The knocks got louder and more frequent but I was determined not to move in the hope that he would just go away. Then he decided to look through the window. He shouted, “Do you think I’m stupid? I can see you in there, sir. Open the door.” I said, “You’re not coming in mate!” He said, “I don’t want to come in, I just want you to step out of the car.”

Pruof Rodding

I was in an English exam and they asked “Write the past tense of ‘Think’” I thought and thought about this for ages. Eventually, I went for ‘Thunk’

Type of dreamer

The other day I was reading my emails and there was one from my boss, it said; “Mr. Morgan I regret to inform you that although I thought this company could tolerate you, I’m afraid you’re just not productive enough. You may turn up Wednesday to collect your things. I sincerely hope you will be OK.” And I thought to myself, doesn’t OK look like a sideways person?

A man was going bald and told his friends he was going to get…

First Time Flier

The first-time flier was very nervous as he buckled his seat belt before take off. He turned to the woman in the next seat and asked, “About how often do jetliners like this crash?” She thought a moment and replied, “Usually, just once.”

Management Message

In the mens room at work, the boss placed a sign directly above the sink. It had a single word on it: “Think!” The next day, when he went to the mens room, he looked at the sign, and right below it, immediately above the soap dispenser, someone had carefully lettered another sign which read, “Thoap!”

Out of this world

If people are so amazed by crop circles, they should see the farm near my house. Aliens have somehow managed to cut down all the crops, roll them into enormous cylinder shapes, and stack them by the side of the field.

Overheard at The Print show

Want to hear a dirty joke? A kid jumped into a muddy puddle. Want to hear a clean joke? A kid jumped into the bath. Two peanuts were walking down the street. One was asalted. I’ve just opened a new restaurant called Karma. There’s no menu, we just give you what you deserve. My sister bet me a £1,000,000 that I couldn’t make a car out of spaghetti; you should have seen her face when I drove pasta.

Today I gave my dead batteries away...Free of charge. Never give up on your dreams, keep sleeping. If you are running next to me on the treadmill, the answer is YES, we are racing. Being honest may not get you a lot of FRIENDS but it’ll always get you the RIGHT ONES. I’m going to stand outside. So if anyone asks, I am outstanding. I am going bananas. That’s what I say to my bananas before I leave the house. I’m so bright my mother calls me son. My eyelids are so sexy; I can’t keep my eyes off them. The past, present and future walk into a bar. It was tense. One hat said to the other you stay here I’ll go on a head Silence is golden, Duct tape is silver I know some jokes about unemployment but they need some work. I have never seen a fruit PUNCH and a cereal BOX If you think of a better fish pun. Let minnow. A three legged dog walks in the bar and says - “I’m lookin’ for the guy who shot my paw” I tried to catch some fog earlier. I mist. Change is hard. Have you ever tried to bend a coin? If money doesn’t grow on trees why do banks have branches? Did you hear about the farmer who fed his cows birdseed and started selling cheep milk?

His friends asked how getting a rabbit tattooed on his head would help?
