Ace Development Aims to Bring Disused Southwick Tennis Courts Back to Life

P

lans to spend £320,000 reviving derelict and disused tennis courts at Southwick Leisure Centre, as part of a major effort to increase sport participation, have been announced.

Adur District Council wants to spend the funds restoring three tennis courts and turning the rest into a state-of-the-art all-weather sports pitch.

New fencing and floodlighting would be installed at the Third Generation (3G) pitch for football, hockey and netball, and the refurbished tennis courts. The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) has been involved in discussions aimed at getting more youngsters to take up the sport at Southwick.

The plans include the installation of a LTA-backed ‘Club Spark’ remote access booking system and access gate to maximise usage.

The Council has also worked closely with the leisure centre operators, Impulse Leisure, to develop the proposal.

If given the go-ahead, the new sports pitch will be built on the site of the three western tennis courts situated away from residential properties, which have been unused since 2005. The eastern set of tennis courts will receive the upgrade, having been removed from use earlier this year due to their poor condition and lack of use.

The regeneration is part of the Council’s commitment to support the health and wellbeing of communities across Adur,

utilising funding already allocated in the 2018/19 Capital Investment Programme (£322,000).

Cllr Emma Evans, Adur District Council’s Executive Member for Environment, said: “I’m delighted to support this exciting plan to develop our sporting and leisure facilities in Southwick. We are working hard with key partners and leisure providers across Adur to provide value for money opportunities and facilities that support our communities to improve their health and wellbeing.”

The plans will go to Adur & Worthing Councils’ Joint Strategic Committee on Tuesday 4th December 2018. If approved by councillors, the residential properties adjacent to the proposals’ boundary will be consulted prior to any planning application being made.

Conserving God’s Creation – Shoreham Beach Church Bids for Eco Status

T

he Church of the Good Shepherd has enlisted the support of the next generation in helping its drive to become an Eco Church.

Children from the 10 O’Clock Rock Sunday School group have created a “bug hotel” just a few metres from the beach which is a designated Local Nature Reserve and hope it will become home to a variety of insects.

The initiative forms part of the Eco Church programme, which aims to encourage churches to reduce their environmental impact and adopt a more sustainable way of living, working and worshipping.

Assistant Curate, the Revd Jane Bartlett, said, “We are trying to engage people of all ages and from all walks of life in our efforts to look after our buildings and land, and to share the Eco Church messages with our local community.

Other environmentally-friendly initiatives include: Installing a cycle rack outside the King’s Walk church in a partnership project with Shoreham Beach Residents’ Association (SBRA); Developing a community collection for point for the recycling of plastic waste; Planting up one of the Beach’s community planters (donated by Adur District Council and renovated by SBRA). The Sunday School group will be tasked with planting it up with bee-friendly plants.

Revd Jane blessed both the bug hotel and the cycle racks after a Sunday morning service recently.

Little Blue Sails Away With Trophy

S

ussex Yacht Club and the Sussex Sailability charity celebrated a successful summer of sailing with their annual Prize-Giving Dinner recently, raising over £300 for the Shoreham Harbour Lifeboat Station.

The event celebrated individual and group achievements with the crew of Little Blue winning the stunning Yacht of the Year trophy after taking part in more than twenty races throughout the year.

Tim Worsfield, the Skipper of the 34-foot cruiser racer Little Blue was delighted saying, “I feel so proud of everyone, they’ve been brilliant; they really are a top crew! We took part in every one of the races and had the most fantastic weather conditions this summer, which were perfect for our boat and it performed really well.”

Terry Kinch, Commodore of Sussex Yacht Club said, “This is our biggest event of the year, it’s our chance to reflect on another year of fantastic sailing in one of the best locations along the south coast, whilst thinking forward to 2019.

“Next year is going to be a landmark year for us as we work in partnership with Sussex Sailability to start building a new clubhouse and facilities that have been specifically designed to be easily accessible to sailors with disabilities.

“We all love the freedom of sailing and we want many more people to be able to enjoy the sport as independently as possible. Sailing should be for all; it’s something that all our members are passionate about.”

ailability was founded by the Royal Yachting Association to enable disabled people to take part in the sport of sailing. With the aid of a National Lottery Grant, the Sussex Yacht Club premises at Shoreham have been modified for disability access. Hoists have been installed on the jetties to lift sailors to and from their wheelchairs.

The charity has 15 boats suitable for people with disabilities to helm and to crew. These range from single-handers (one equipped with servo assisted controls) to 23 ft. racing keelboats. It also has a Ro-Ro power boat, accessible for people who need to stay in their wheelchairs.

Sussex Sailability is a 100% volunteer organisation. The volunteers drive safety boats, help maintain, rig, launch, wash and put away the dinghies, as well as helping with coaching, and sailing on and off the water.

t the moment of writing your local Lions club is in the thick of Christmas fundraising. They are manning the grotto at Mayberry’s Garden Centre, tramping the streets with Santa and his sleigh and collecting at local markets. Hundreds of children will have seen Santa at Mayberrys or around the streets and hundreds of pounds will have been raised, all of which will go back out to local charitable causes, either by way of donations or service activities such as tea and entertainment for local elderly people.

The Lions’ job is made so much easier when there are more hands to help and in November Lions President Frances Burt was delighted to invite two new members to join. Their induction was conducted by the Lions District Governor, Pete

Dilloway. These Lions were previously Friends of Lions and had joined in with a number of Lions’ activities for a couple of years before deciding that they would like to be full members and have a say in how the club supports the local community.

The October ‘Meet the Lions’ event at the Crown and Anchor also generated more ‘Friends’. One of these, David Sluys, will be running the Worthing Half-Marathon in February and has decided to support a very worthy Lions charity – LIBRA (Lions International Blood Research Appeal).

ell that’s Christmas and 2018 done, so Happy New Year! Time to start looking forward now at all the garden will bring in the coming new season, and it’s not that far off. Although January can seem a gloomy, cold month, it’s well worth having a walk around the garden. You’ll be amazed at how many signs of new life there are already. Keep an eye on the clock every evening and you really will notice that the daylight hours are starting to push the dark nights back.

The longer daylight hours are one of the things that help to bring the new growth in the garden as the plants use the daylight to create new energy. There’s still a long way to go

though with many cold days ahead of us. Now is a really good time of year to start shopping for your seeds, seed potatoes and other things such as fruit canes. Although most are new on the shelves, a lot of local garden centres have promotions on seeds, often doing them at half price for a limited time, so keep a look-out.

If you’re trying to get a head start in the garden then using cloches to cover the ground and help retain heat in the soil is a good start. By the end of the month you could start to sow carrots, spinach and broad beans in the cloches. If you have rhubarb in the garden, you can force the rhubarb to produce sweeter stalks by placing a container over the top of it. Bear in mind that you shouldn’t do this if you did it last year as it will exhaust the rhubarb.

If you are going to try your hand at growing seeds this year, whether it’s vegetables or plants, then give them the best start you can. Make sure the trays are clean and the compost for the seeds is new. Its best not to use compost from your compost bin for this, as it will normally be too rich. If you haven’t got the luxury of a heated greenhouse to give them a good start, then sunny window sills or the small heated seed trays really will give them a head start and you can rotate them around once they get going with other trays.

Hopefully you’ve already done the preparation in your borders but, if not, clear out any dead wood and give them all a good covering with some compost. If you haven’t got the time or inclination to dig the compost in, leave it where it is and the worms will help to do the job for you. Make sure you don’t put the compost down on frozen or frost covered ground through. It will act like a blanket insulating the cold in the ground.

I find that this time of year the lawn often takes a pounding from people constantly taking shortcuts across lawns or through beds, and the damage it leaves very quickly makes this apparent. If this is the case then its well worth considering adapting the garden to incorporate these routes with pathways, as people will always take the shortest route, especially when in a hurry.

It really is a good time of year as you can see the difference and new life in the garden little by little – hopefully by the time of the next article it will feel like spring is just starting to claw its way in over winter.

How to Avoid Injury When Hitting the Slopes this Winter

T

his winter will see a lot of people heading for the slopes to ski or snowboard. Being a fast and exhilarating sport, it is also a high-risk venture for causing injuries. The sheer number of people on the slopes, weaving in and out of each other’s way is one reason alone for why injuries can occur, where people do not see danger, or cannot steer clear of harms way.

Skiing and snowboarding also requires a huge amount of endurance and leg strength to be able to exercise for such long periods. Flexibility also plays an important role in being able to ski or board with good technique so that muscles can work optimally and with ease.

If we don’t have the flexibility or strength to get our technique right, then the risk of getting injured becomes greater.

How can we minimize these risks?

Wear a helmet – Firstly, and most importantly wear a helmet.

There have been known cases of injuries and even deaths occurring through not wearing helmets, and protecting our heads. 20 years ago when I first skied, nobody wore a helmet; nowadays, you’re a minority if you don’t. Nobody cares what you look like on the slopes. Stay safe and protect your head.

Do leg strengthening exercises – If you want to reduce knee injuries, then you need to build and strengthen your quads and hamstrings, which are the muscles in the front

and back of your thighs. It used to be recommended that you performed static squats, with your back against a wall to strengthen your quads, but times have changed and dynamic exercises such as squats, jump squats and leg press are much more effective. Doing 2 to 3 sets of 10 reps every other day, starting a couple of months before your holiday will bring you strength benefits and reduce your risks of nasty knee ligament sprains or ruptures.

Develop your core strength – Doing core strength exercises, such as planks and bridging exercises will help provide stability to your back and help you reduce your risks of injuring yourself, should you fall over during your time on the slopes.

It also means your can maintain your posture for longer and helps you save energy by making you more efficient.

Work on your leg flexibility – You need to have flexibility in your ankles, calves, and thigh muscles if you’re going to be able to get your weight forward onto the fronts of your skis and be able to squat. You should stretch each leg muscle group for 1-minute holds, 2-3 times per day and before and after exercise.

It should be mentioned that although you can prepare yourself, there are no guarantees that you can avoid injury, and falling awkwardly to your side, with your arm outstretched or crossing your skis etc can have poor consequences, but at least with the information given you can rest assured you have done everything in your power to avoid injury and enjoy your experience to the max.

It would take pages and hundreds of pictures, diagrams and videos to go through each of the exercises mentioned above. The (Tiny) Friends of Shoreham Beach

O

ver 50 people were treated to an amazing talk by ecologist Graeme Lyons urging us to “prevent further loss of habitat on this exceptional site of vegetative shingle” (Shoreham Beach).

Graeme showed the results of his invertebrate survey of the Local Nature Reserve (LNR) undertaken in 2018 with funding granted by Tesco Bags and the Rampion Fund at Sussex Community Trust.

Friends of Shoreham Beach (FoSB) commissioned Graeme, a well-respected ecologist, to undertake the first detailed invertebrate survey of the nature reserve in order to give guidance on future management of this special site.

Graeme divided the site into 5 sections spending 6 half days surveying the shingle and more days afterwards studying these tiny beetles, bugs, etc. Excitedly, he revealed that over 10% of the insects he found have conservation status.

“No doubt many rare species have already been lost but there are still many species present that could be lost if a change in direction isn’t made soon. Targeted control of Silver Ragwort and Red Valerian should be made as a matter of urgency to prevent any further loss of habitat.”

“If the two threats – spread of unwanted aliens and the dumping of garden waste can be eliminated from the LNR, it will help to safeguard the site’s value for invertebrates for years to come. A community-led approach to prevent dumping of garden waste and to control sections of invasive plants may work.”

Following Graeme’s advice, FoSB plan to continue to remove selected areas of the invasive species and prevent the spread of young alien seedlings BUT WE NEED HELP to do this from any volunteers who can spare a small amount of time to join us. No experience is required but you will be bending and doing some digging. Forks and gloves will be provided if you do not have your own.

Soaring 555ft above sea level, abseilers will be able to witness breath-taking views over Portsmouth Harbour and the Solent before descending 320ft.

Sophie Henderson, Events Officer at the hospice, said: “The Emirates Spinnaker Tower is taller than the London Eye, Blackpool Tower and Big Ben, and has already established itself as a national icon for Britain.

Describing the experience, Jacqui said: “It was exhilarating! Scary, but exhilarating. I’m so pleased that I did it. I found stepping out at the top really, really scary and I did think, ‘Do I want to do this?’, but then I thought, ‘Just get on with it!’”

Lieutenant Commander Frank Measham Berncastle

L

ieutenant Frank Berncastle led a series of daring top-secret missions during 1942 and 1943. On the darkest of nights, two specially converted landing craft stealthily crept from the English Channel into the choppy waters of the French coast. The missions were to survey the French beaches for the future D-Day landings.

The boats were 32 feet long, with low outlines and exhausts below the water line. They were wooden hulled as opposed to metal, which would have interfered with the survey equipment on board. They were crewed by 712th Landing Craft Personnel Flotilla. Travelling at 3 knots, with a maximum speed of only 10 knots, if they were discovered there was no chance of escape.

One craft would be anchored while the other would carry on in a run to the beach, pulling a wire taut to measure distance, while an echo sounder measured the depth. Bearings and photographs of significant landmarks on the coastline were also taken. During one mission, flares from a German convoy lighted up the craft and they came under artillery fire. Shells exploded around them creating fountains of spraying water, and they could do nothing about it, as both craft were unarmed. Lieutenant Berncastle was undeterred and decided to complete the survey, ignoring the Germans.

On another mission, Berncastle led a recognisance party ashore, accompanied by Sir Malcolm Campbell. He strolled along the sand testing its firmness and the gradient with a stick.

Due to poor night vision, Campbell almost missed his boat back to England. Later in a South Coast pub, Berncastle’s identity and night visits to France almost became public knowledge when Sir Malcolm Campbell was recognised as being the world land speed record holder. On D-Day, Berncastle’s landing craft were first into the beaches that they had secretly surveyed. They worked as pathfinders by dropping buoys into the sea to create channels for the assault ships to travel through. This allowed tanks to come ashore supporting the invasion.

Frank Berncastle was born in Croydon on the 7th of July 1912. In 1928 he became a merchant seaman joining the British India and Indo-Chinese Steam Navigation Company.

His dream was to be the Captain of a P & O passenger liner, wining, dining and dancing with the ladies. That changed when was 24 and commissioned to the Royal Navy Reserve. He now wanted to be a hydrographer. In 1937 he served on the notorious HMS Endeavour, a coal burning survey vessel that had charted the waters of Gallipoli before the Anzac landings

in World War One. HMS Endeavour put in at Darwin, Australia on Monday the 10th of May 1937, having sped up to arrive in time for the King’s coronation celebrations. The ship then left for New Zealand to survey the coastline, seven-eighths of which still had not been charted.

Following the outbreak of World War Two, Berncastle was transferred to the minesweeper HMS Aberdare in October 1939. He became known for his expert navigation skills and transferred on the 13th of March 1940 to the staff of the Chief of Combined Operations Lord Mountbatten. Following the survey missions of the French Coast, his reconnaissance unit was deployed to the Mediterranean. On the night of the 8Th of September 1943, while under enemy artillery fire, Berncastle anchored off Salerno to guide in the assault. He stayed for five days, marking the channels to the beaches for the landings during continuous shelling.

Berncastle was promoted to Lieutenant Commander on the 28th of July 1944, having been awarded two DSC’s and been mentioned in dispatches twice. He married Hilda Mary Smith that same year. He was nicknamed ‘Snooze’ by his fellow officers for his ability to fall asleep anywhere, no matter how cramped the conditions, but would always become wide-awake and the first to spring into action. After the war, in 1949 he captained HMS Sharpshooter, looking for dangerous wreckage that was a hazard to shipping off the east coast. These waters were known as E-boat Alley after the German raiding vessels. During flooding in England in 1953, he set up tide gauges that saved many lives by warning of future floods.

Frank Berncastle retired from the navy in 1957 and became a hydrographer at the Port of Bristol Authority. He then worked for the River Humber Conservancy Board before moving to Shoreham-By-Sea. At Shoreham, he owned and often singlehandedly sailed his 20-foot yacht Albatross to France. He lived to the age of 89 and died on the 26th of July 2008.

Intrepid Team of Cyclists Take on the South Downs Way for Local Hospice

F

ive friends from Worthing who first met at school aged 12 are celebrating after completing a charity cycle ride from Winchester to Eastbourne along the South Downs Way. Best friends since school, Dave Rowley, Dave Atkinson, Andrew Cranford, Damian Webber and Graham Childs decided to take on the challenge in memory of Dave Rowley’s beloved wife, Mary, who was cared for by St Barnabas House.

The intrepid five took on 106 miles of exhilarating bridleways over two days, following ancient tracks that have been in use for over 5,000 years. The route took them alongside Bronze Age barrows and included challenging climbs which were rewarded by breath-taking views of the

South Downs. The men were reassured by having another friend, Justine Cranford, close at hand driving the support van.

Wendy Bardsley, Community Fundraising Manager at St Barnabas House said: “The team raised £840 which was matched by HSBC Bank via its Pound For Pound scheme, resulting in an incredible fundraising total of £1,680. This is enough to pay for one day of all the care provided by the St Barnabas House Day Hospice.”

WOW! Worthing Looks Set to Welcome a Spectacular Giant Wheel to the Seafront

W

orthing is set to get the WOW factor with the proposed installation of a Giant Wheel on the seafront. The Worthing Observation Wheel (WOW) is proposed for the area between The Beacon and the Beach Office at the bottom of Montague Place.

At a height of 46 metres, the equivalent of nine double decker buses, the WOW will give unparalleled views of the town, Downs and the Channel. There will be a total of 36 pods with a capacity of 6 people each. A temporary base will be built on the beach to support the ride.

Worthing Borough Council is seeking to enter into a threeyear lease arrangement with the WOW operating for a six to nine month period between April and October, and then being dismantled for the winter.

The new proposal builds on the fantastic success of the Big Wheel which operated in Steyne Gardens earlier this year and which attracted more than 10,000 visitors in a month, despite extremely poor weather conditions.‌ Buoyed by that success the Council began to examine opportunities to bring a more longer term attraction to the seafront as part of its continuing efforts to stimulant new economic growth and visitors to the town.

The Council undertook an open procurement exercise to identify an operator. One company, deKoning Leisure Ltd, which had run the Steyne Gardens wheel, responded to the call and after careful evaluation it was decided to proceed.

The company will bear the costs of constructing the base

on the beach, and the wheel, which will be a new construction specifically for Worthing. It has also agreed to make a financial contribution to the Council depending on profit. There will be no financial contribution from the Council except for some officer time, and the company will bear the costs of dismantling the wheel and removing the base at the end of the three years.

Permission to go ahead with developing the proposal, planned for next year, has to be given by Worthing Borough Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration, Cllr Kevin Jenkins, later this month and then gain planning permission.

Cllr Jenkins said: “I have had a look at this proposal and, in principal, it looks fantastic. I will of course look at all aspects of the report but from what I’ve seen so far this has the potential to be a wonderful iconic seafront attraction which will give amazing panoramic views of our beautiful town.

“The company would be taking all the risk but when we saw the popularity of the wheel at Steyne Gardens earlier this year I thought it is well worth exploring a more elaborate offer, that could give Worthing its own unique selling point and attract visitors to the town as a destination of choice.

“We are transforming this seafront town with proposals to improve our streets and walkways and restaurants wanting to open up here. There’s plenty more to come!”

Cllr Jenkins will spend the next few days weighing up the report produced by the Council’s Place and Economy team before deciding if to give the go-ahead. It will then go forward to the planning committee.

SOUTHWICK CAMERA CLUB

The club meets at Southwick Community Centre, Southwick St, West Sussex. At 7.30pm every Thurs, Sept to May. Membership is open to anyone interested in photography at any level, from beginners to experience. We are a friendly group and meetings are informal and include workshops on camera and image techniques as well as talks by experienced photographers. The club also organises regular photo-shoots throughout the year to places of interest and members are encouraged to enter their images into club competitions with other local camera clubs which gives our members an opportunity to compete with the best photographers in the area if they so wish.
