I love this time of year with the onset of warmer days and the budding of colour throughout the landscape. We live in a very aesthetic area with the South Downs on our doorstep and the fresh salty air of the sea.

The Wellington Wailers

S

horeham’s sea shanty crew, “ The Wellington Wailers” can be guaranteed to make any occasion, they perform at a success.

Six years ago, a small group of like minded sea dogs decided to resurrect the singing of traditional sea shanties, at The Sussex Yacht Club, in Shoreham.

Since then the ships company has expanded. When fully manned, the Wailers can muster sixteen men, who have developed a natural close harmony.

Those old shanties had a serious purpose,encouraging the men to heave in time with the shanty man’s song. There is nothing serious about the Wailers delivery of the shanties. The emphasis is on humour, but with a good rousing sound. Audiences are encouraged to join in the choruses and participate in any shenanigans that the Wailers flamboyant captain may devise.

Since their formation,The Wailers have performed at countless gigs, festivals, and charitable events, and most notably had tracks from their latest C.D. “High Tides and Low Life” played on Radio 2,

This year will be their fifth appearance at the “Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival”.

Pembroke Financial supports Whoopsadaisy Charity

HOREHAM-based Pembroke Financial Services has donated £3,500 to support children’s disability charity Whoopsadaisy.

Based in Preston Park, Brighton, Whoopsadaisy provides free Conductive Education sessions for babies and children with cerebral palsy and other motor conditions.

Managing director Keith Relf said: “It is a pleasure to support this fantastic local charity – it is something we have been looking to do for a long time.

“We have a regular collection for the charity and promote the legendary Whoopsadaisy Bears made by the charity’s trustee Helen Palmer.”

Lions help fight skin cancer

A

dur East Lions intend holding melanoma screening days during the summer with the aid of the Melanoma Fund. They will be using the expertise of a consultant and surgeons from the renowned Melanoma and Skin Cancer Unit of Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead. They will also be raising awareness by handing out bottles of suncream.

In order to fund this project the Lions have teamed up with Tesco Bags of Help and have been shortlisted as one of three projects that customers can vote for from 1 March to the end of April. In order to vote customers who spend at least 10p can ask for a token at the till and use it to vote for the project they want to win. The stores taking part are Tesco Extra at Holmbush and Tesco Express in Eastern Avenue. If you would like to support this project then please do not forget to ask for a token every time you shop!

£9 per person and this includes a fish and chip supper (bring a tipple of your choice). There’s a maximum of 6 in a team but if there are fewer of you do not worry as you will be paired up with others. This event is usually well-attended so if you would like to take part please get in touch with Colin on 01273 592213.

Tea social:

Another way that you can help the local Lions but have fun at the same time is to come and support the next quiz evening. This will take place on the evening of 7 April at St John Ambulance Headquarters, The Twitten, Southwick. Tickets are

One of the Lions’ mottos is ‘We Serve’ and your local Lions love nothing better than helping others. Twice a year they hold a tea social for elderly local people who live on their own.

Guests are fed (including home-made cake) and watered (tea, coffee, fruit juice) and also entertained. The main problem the Lions have with this event is finding the people who would benefit most so if you have a family member or maybe a neighbour who spends a lot of time on their own then ask them if they would like to come along and then pass the details on to the Lions.

Messengers Community Gospel Choir

10th Anniversary of Workshops & Concerts

M

essengers Community Gospel Choir is about to embark on its tenth year of workshops and concerts and we think this is certainly something worth celebrating! We first opened our doors in March 2008 and we have seen so many teenagers, children and more recently adults become part of our choir community.

We will be starting a new term on Tuesday 13th March at Shoreham Baptist Church, Western Road, and we would welcome any newcomers who would like to join the Messengers family. No experience or extraordinary singing talent is necessary – just enthusiasm. Our choir is made up of three groups: a children’s choir, a youth choir and an adult choir. We sing a varied and uplifting repertoire including Gospel, soul and contemporary songs. Some pieces will be performed by the individual choirs and others will be everyone singing together.

We are an inclusive, fun, friendly and truly communityfocussed choir. Our singers age between four and eighty-two, so there is a real ‘family feel’ to our rehearsals and concerts, where everyone is encouraged and valued.

The choir raises money through performances for our partner school and choir (also called Messengers) in Kittika, near Kampala in Uganda. Spring is Approaching

W

ell here we are well into February, with Christmas and the New Year seeming a long way off already. Although we are in the darker colder winter months, it’s always a good time of year to start looking ahead. The days will slowly lengthen and with the odd day of full winter sunshine you can start to notice changes in the garden. Already as we are working on projects we can see evidence of new life appearing with bulbs staring to show and new growth on shrubs.

As we reach March it is very noticeable that the evenings are lengthening little by little and the clocks will soon be changing giving us even more time to enjoy the garden, so

it would seem spring is on its way. Mind you it has been a very one of the coldest start to the year, with a lot of gloom, prolonged low temperatures, rain and frost, with occasional rays of sunshine! I suppose it could have been winter. Let’s hope for better weather in spring!

As we are already in March, and the year is starting to gather pace, it’s time to get your skates on with some jobs.

If you are looking to plant seeds, then in some cases, get a move on! Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers etc., will all do well with a good early start. Try to look after them as well as possible from start to finish. Use clean trays, pots or containers, new compost and keep them water and warm.

Follow the instructions on the packet and don’t be afraid to be ruthless and thin them out saving only the best and strongest as they start to emerge. You can also start to plant salad greens if you have a greenhouse or warm window sill. It helps cheer up the place to see anything growing, especially if you get quick results.

If you’ve got space in the greenhouse you could try something a little different by planting up hanging baskets, or any other container with strawberry plants. I’ve even seen old wellies with holes cut in the sides used as strawberry containers! If you choose an early variety they should give you a nice early crop in time for the first week of Wimbledon.

Hopefully you are starting to notice a good carpet of spring flowers showing themselves, although I think they have been a little later in appearing this year. They use a lot of energy to get up through the ground and put on the display, so reward them with a liquid feed of fertiliser to help them get more energy back into the bulb for next year, and dot cut the greenery down once the flowers die off. They take the nutrients back from the greenery into the bulb.

Another familiar sound at this time of year is the lawnmower running up and down the lawn. Remember to start off with a high setting on the lawn and make sure you have a sharp blade on the mower. If the ground is still too wet for the first mow, get the rest of the lawn looking good and sort out the edges, to make the mowing easier and to keep the lawn looking really sharp.

This is one of the best times of year, having been putting up with miserable weather, it’s great to get back outside and get jobs done, or just see what is starting to emerge again, so enjoy it, even if it means putting a coat on!

Essential oils for sound sleep

S

leep is so fundamental for good health and wellbeing, yet I come across so many clients, friends and people that have problems getting a good quality nights sleep.

There are some wonderful methods of using natural essential oils that can help you to relax, unwind, settle the mind of stress and worry, therefore laying the foundations for a good quality sleep.

The reason essential oils work so well especially as opposed to artificial scents is that they have a psychotherapeutic action, meaning that the natural oil molecules actually change the way our nervous system responds and the sense of smell which is linked to the emotional centre or Limbic part of our brain gets stimulated by them. As scent can evoke many emotions and memories these amazing plant extracts can provide a multitude of benefits.

Every oil has a different impact on our mood, where some such as Rosemary and Peppermint are invigorating and great to help our mental focus, Orange and Bergamot connect us to positivity and joy. Others help us to drop deeper into ourselves and calm our state of mind. These pure plant oils can provide a key to unlock and access the moods we want to connect with most. Here are a few or oils you can use prior to sleeping, how to use them and why they are suitable for remedying insomnia or tense sleep.

Lavender: Lavender can help you to let go of pent up tension, and it’s beneficial influence on the respiratory tract helps you to breathe deeply. It has a supreme sedative effect making it a nervous system relaxant, whilst its soothing qualities make an excellent choice for calming the mind and body before sleep.

It is however often misused.

The key is to make sure you keep the amount used to a very minimum, this method is called subtle aromatherapy and it can have a greater effect on the mind and emotions.

Lavender can actually be quite stimulating when used in greater amounts and especially before sleep when our senses don’t need over stimulating! So don’t go splashing drops onto your pillow think about using a drop onto a tissue placed underneath the pillow.

Roman Chamomile: Promoting peacefulness and comfort, the oil from this gentle flower can ease frustration and

disappointment and calm anxiety, this will help the churning of thoughts that can make sleep so evasive.

Try a drop or 2 diluted in a tablespoon of a light oil such as sunflower or coconut into a warm bath and let its sweet scent calm your mind and muscles.

Neroli: This oil can be used in the treatment of grief, shock or trauma, yet life can provide many stresses that aren’t necessarily as large but mini traumas can be created as we have concerns or minor upsets. Sometimes these stresses remain underneath the surface only to rear their head once we lay down and close our eyes to sleep.

Neroli has the most divine and uplifting scent, turning pessimism and agitation to serenity, this is a great oil to scent the bedroom and preparing a calming atmosphere.

Put a few drops of Neroli and sweet orange oil, which is an equally soothing oil and from the same plant family (Neroli from the blossom of the orange tree, sweet orange extracted from the rind of the fruit) into an oil burner or diffuser half an hour before you go to bed.

Frankincense: Often used in meditation and spiritual practise due to it’s ability to transport us into another realm or consciousness, helping to deeply relax both mind and body this oil is said to banish nightmares and promote pleasant dreams.

You can place a drop of the oil on the soles of your feet or massage in combined with some plain oil helping to alleviate fears and stress whilst soothing the nerve reflexes which impact the whole body.

Fostering – it’s a family thing

D

o you like the idea of being a foster carer – but are worried about how it might impact on your own children?

Cat and Paul are among the many foster carers who have found that fostering has been a rewarding and positive experience for the whole family.

They have fostered teenagers with Brighton & Hove City Council for over eight years and have two sons now aged 18 and 20.

Cat said: “We have had a very open communication with our own birth children right from the start, because we felt the whole family had to be behind us.

“We chatted about what fostering was and why we wanted to do it, and they were supportive from day one.

“They were very involved in the entire process, and the council’s social work team made sure they understood what fostering was and were comfortable with it.

“I think it’s given our own children a much wider perspective of the world. They are more tolerant, compassionate and open minded, and I think it has also given them a sense of gratitude as they realise just how lucky they are to have a stable, loving family.

Cat’s son said: “I’ve felt proud to be part of a foster family, and would encourage other children to give it a try. Each placement has been different but I have happy memories of every one.”

Single parent Natasha has two birth children aged 13 and 8, and has been fostering teenagers for two years.

She said: “My own children tell me they like meeting new young people and getting to know them – and seeing things get better for them.

“They have learnt lots about other cultures and about sharing, and I think it has really brought out their generosity and kindness.”

H.M.S. Shoreham

O

n the 18th of June 1694 H.M.S. Shoreham joined the English and Dutch invasion fleet sailing from Portsmouth, intent on destroying the French fleet moored in Camaret Bay and seizing the port of Brest.

The fleet consisted of thirty-six warships, twelve fire ships and forty troop ships loaded with General Thomas Tollemache’s army of ten thousand men. Its first action almost ended in disaster as a lack of knowledge of the French coastline left H.M.S. Shoreham anchored over unseen rocks at high tide. When the waves receded she was grounded, along with six other ships beneath heavily fortified cliffs. Bombarded by cannon and sniper fire, H.M.S. Shoreham could not elevate her guns to return fire.

The hundred or so crew on board, led by Captain John Constable, endured hours of their ship being blown apart around them. When the tide returned, by sheer luck the hull was still intact and H.M.S Shoreham floated free and escaped.

On the 25th of July 1695, H.M.S. Shoreham took her first prize, capturing the French privateer La Feroa. In 1699, Captain William Passenger became the third commander of H.M.S. Shoreham. He had already achieved notoriety among the crew, as his previous vessel was the explosive-filled fire ship Vesuvius. This ship had been constructed at Nicholas Barrett’s yard in Shoreham in 1693. Also in that same year H.M.S. Shoreham had been built here in its hometown by the Thomas Ellis shipyard.

On the 29th of April 1700, H.M.S. Shoreham put in at Chesapeake Bay in Virginia, North America to take on supplies. Short of manpower, Captain Passenger enlisted inexperienced, underage sailors to bolster the crew. The Governor of Virginia, Francis Nicholson, together with local customs and revenue man Peter Hayman and a Captain Aldred stepped on board H.M.S. Shoreham. Captain Aldred’s ship the Essex Prize had recently fallen victim to the pirate vessel La Paix. She was a notorious raider responsible for the lost of numerous ships in the coastal waters of Virginia. H.M.S Shoreham set off after the pirates with the Governor and the revenue man still on board.

In the early hours, contact was made with the pirate ship.

With its twenty guns, La Paix was actually sailing to attack H.M.S. Shoreham. H.M.S. Shoreham was at a disadvantage as her newly acquired sailors lacked the skills to man all of her thirty-two guns. They were out manned and out gunned, with a murderous band of cutthroats closing in for a boarding action. Captain Passenger rallied the crew and showed great seamanship in keeping H.M.S. Shoreham just out of their enemy’s reach. The two ships when at close range, added pistol shot to the cannonade blasting through the hulls Current H.M.S. Shoreham and across the decks. With a pistol in

each hand, the Governor blazed away at the pirates as Peter Hayman who was standing with him was killed.

Eventually after a ten-hour battle, the La Paix was a wreck.

Its mast, sails and rigging were stripped away and with no rudder the pirate ship ran aground. H.M.S. Shoreham had also lost its mast, sails and rigging. Governor Nicholson promised a jury trial and over a hundred pirates surrendered, including the notorious pirate Captain Louis Guitter. However this was only after he had failed to blow up the pirate ship’s gunpowder stores. The blast, if he had succeeded, could have destroyed H.M.S. Shoreham as well. Also on board the La Paix were fifty prisoners who were rescued, plus two merchant ships that had also been taken by the pirates were recovered.

Captain Guitter was found guilty of piracy and hanged.

Following her return to England in 1702, H.M.S. Shoreham was deployed on the coast of Ireland on convoy protection duty. She patrolled the trade route between Whitehaven, Milford and Bristol, plus the shipping lane between Belfast and Kinsale. William Passenger received a promotion in 1705, and handed over command to Captain George Saunders.

H.M.S. Shoreham then captured two French pirate ships off the Irish coast. The first was on the 5th of June 1706 and was the eight-gun privateer The Francis. On the 19th of May 1709, twelve-gun privateer Esperance was also taken. Captain Saunders was knighted and became Sir George Saunders.

H.M.S Shoreham was decommissioned and broken up on the 11th of September 1719. However in a strange twist of a fate, a new ship was commissioned using the old timber from the ship in its construction and it too was named H.M.S. Shoreham. It took to the seas to combat Spanish piracy on the shipping route linking New York to the Caribbean.

In total, both ships named H.M.S. Shoreham had fourteen captains during their life spans from 1694 to 1742. The second ship was decommissioned and sold at Deptford in 1744.

Today, the current H.M.S. Shoreham is a minesweeper that often visits the Port Of Shoreham.

Trekkers to climb Mount Snowdon to raise funds for St Barnabas House

A

team of trekkers will travel to Wales in September to summit Mount Snowdon while raising vital funds for local charity St Barnabas House.

Registration is now open for the Worthing-based hospice’s newest event, which gives challenge seekers the opportunity to summit the highest mountain in England and Wales at 1,085 metres, witnessing the beautiful sunset across Snowdonia.

The team of trekkers will meet at St Barnabas House in Goring-by-Sea on Saturday 8 September, transferring to Llanberis in North Wales where they will stop for lunch before the start of a 5-7 hour ascent of the Llanberis Path.

Lucy Brady, Events Fundraiser at St Barnabas House, said: “We aim to summit as the sun sets to witness the amazing views across the Snowdonia National Park. We will then descend through the night using head torches to light our way.

“Trekking Mount Snowdon during the daytime is a great adventure, but trekking to its summit for sunset and descending in the dark brings another exciting element and challenge to what is a renowned trek.”

The trek will finish at around midnight and the team will celebrate with breakfast and a glass of bubbly before travelling through the night, arriving back in Worthing on Sunday 9 September.

St Barnabas House has provided end of life care and palliative care for thousands of patients and their families across the Worthing, Adur, Arun and Henfield areas during its 45 years existence.

The hospice provides outstanding specialist palliative care, both at the hospice and in the comfort of patients’ own homes.

It costs over £6 million a year to pay for all the care services provided by St Barnabas House, and only a small part of that is government funded, meaning the majority has to be raised through voluntary donations and fundraising.

Lucy added: “Just 21 percent of our costs are received through statutory funding, so we rely on the generosity and support of individuals and businesses who help us raise funds by taking part in events like our Snowdon Sunset Trek.”

5 exercises for strengthening your core

L

ower back pain is one of the most common problems I see and can be one of the most persistent and recurrent of injuries. One way we can reduce our risk of back pain, or how you can ease back pain if you are already suffering, is through core strength,

What is core strength?

Your core muscles are the deeper muscles in your lower trunk that are designed to stabilise and protect your spine. However, due to bad habits and poor posture, we can become lazy, and therefore we do not use the core muscles as much as we should. Often, when you hear someone telling you they want to strengthen their core, they will mention exercises such as sits-ups.

These exercises strengthen superficial muscles but not the core muscles, so although you might, if you’re lucky end up with good definition, it won’t help you avoid back pain.

How can we strengthen our core muscles?

you’re resting, such as when you sit down, and therefore, for this to happen they need to work at a low level, so they do not fatigue and give up working. Therefore core muscles strength should be gentle, subtle in nature, with an emphasis on focusing on your breathing. This is why Pilates is so good, but ask some people about their experience of Pilates, and they may say something like: “I didn’t really feel like I was doing much”, or “I didn’t get a burn”, or “ It wasn’t energetic enough for me”.

Below are 5 exercises that will help you strengthen your core muscles and help you reduce the risk of back pain.

1. Sitting balance on a Swiss Ball: Sit upright on a Swiss Ball, with your feet hip width apart and rest your hands on your thighs. Make sure to sit tall, and gently pull your stomach in towards your spine, whilst breathing. When you are ready, carefully pick one foot off of the floor, and try and maintain your sitting balance without rolling on your ball. Try and hold your balance for up to 30 seconds, and repeat on both sides.

2. Bridging: Lay on your back, with your knees bent, your feet resting flat on the floor and your feet about hip width apart. Push up through your hips to lift your hips off the floor, making sure to keep your back straight. Do not arch your back too far or let your hips drop on either side. You should try and hold this position for 5 seconds and repeat the movement 10 times.

3. Superman pose: Kneel on all fours with your hands shoulder width apart, and your knees hip width apart. Keep your back and neck in a straight line. Pull your stomach in as above. Without arching or tilting your back, try to straighten one arm out horizontal to the ground and do the same behind you with your opposite leg. You should not aim to raise your arm or leg for height, but think of the movement as more of a stretching position. You should hold the pose on one side for 5 seconds, and try and repeat the movement each side up to 10 times.

4. Single leg balance: Simply stand up tall, with your feet hip width apart, and whilst pulling in your stomach muscles, try and lift one foot off the floor, so that you balance on one leg.

Try and maintain a level pelvis. You should aim to balance on one leg for up to 1 minute each side.

5. Plank: This is quite an advanced exercise, done properly.

Adopt a press up position on your front, but rest on your forearms and elbows, instead of on your hands. Place your feet hip width apart and rest on the balls of your toes. Try and lift your whole body off the floor, just resting on your forearms, elbows and feet. Hold this position for as long as you can, before you start to drop your hips or you begin to shake.

SOUTHWICK CAMERA CLUB

The club meets at Southwick Community Centre, Southwick Street, West Sussex. At 7.30pm every Thurs from Sept to May. Membership is open to anyone interested in photography at any level, from beginners to experience. We are a friendly group and meetings are informal and include workshops on camera and image techniques as well as talks by experienced photographers. The club also organises regular photo-shoots throughout the year to places of interest and members are encouraged to enter their images into club competitions with other local camera clubs which gives our members an opportunity to compete with the best photographers in the area if they so wish. Steyning Camera Club was established in 1972 and is one of the most lively, friendly and successful photographic clubs in the South of England.

Girls’ Brigade is a Christian organisation for girls aged between 4 and 18 years of age. It is run by trained, CRB checked Officers, offering badge work, games, craft, cooking and other activities.
