ello and welcome to this month’s April Edition of the Inside Shoreham and Southwick magazine.

Firstly, I wish you all a Happy Easter!

As we leap into Spring we can look forward to days full of warmer weather and with that the chance to get into our gardens. We have the latest gardening tips from Mark on lawn care. Who doesn’t want to have a beautiful garden with a gorgeous lawn as a backdrop for wonderful spring borders!

We have all our local articles and advice this month.

Street party fees waived for Royal Wedding celebrations

ommunities are being urged to come together to celebrate 2018’s Royal Wedding in style – and Adur & Worthing Councils are backing the move by waiving all fees for street parties. People from across the world will be watching as Prince Harry marries Meghan Markle at a ceremony in Windsor Castle on Saturday 19th May 2018.

With the wedding coinciding with the FA Cup Final, it is hoped people across Adur and Worthing will unite as they did for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding in 2011 and for the Diamond Jubilee and Olympics in 2012.

To make it easier and cheaper for neighbours to hold right royal celebrations, the Councils have scrapped the usual £106 cost of closing a road. Advice and information on waste collections and insurance has also been made available.

All applicants must do is complete and submit two forms by 6th April 2018.

Councillor Angus Dunn, Adur District Council’s Executive Member for Resources, said: “With no charge and very little paperwork, it’s never been easier for neighbours to come together and mark this very public national celebration. I encourage communities in our towns and villages to come together to mark this special day in style.”

Councillor Edward Crouch, Worthing Borough Council’s Executive Member for Digital and Resources, said: “Worthing has a great tradition for making Royal celebrations extremely memorable occasions for all. I urge anyone thinking of arranging their own street party to get in touch to ensure a enjoyable and safe day is had by all.”

Street parties are gatherings organised by and for all residents in one or two small streets without external publicity.

A wider public event in more streets or on a major road needs extra arrangements.

An informal “street meet” on a driveway, parking area, front garden or end of a cul-de-sac does not require permission from the Councils.

Communities interested in hosting a street party do not need a special licence for their event. All they must do is complete an application and an additional road closure notice, which will ensure emergency services are notified.

Plans afoot to extend popular Shoreham Beach boardwalk

M

ore people will be able to enjoy Shoreham Beach as Adur District Council pushes on with plans to extend the popular boardwalk.

Since the local authority installed the first section in 2011, the town’s beautiful beach has been accessible to all thanks to the modern walkway along the shingle.

This week, the Council has taken the first steps to extending the walkway to Shoreham Fort with the aim of starting work before summer. Once complete, the boardwalk will be about one mile in length – meaning more of the unique environment of the protected beach will be opened up to all.

Councillor Emma Evans, Adur District Council’s Executive Member for Environment, said: “The Shoreham Beach boardwalk has been a real hit with residents and visitors which is why I’m delighted to see work on extending it is underway. By using modern materials sympathetic to the area’s conservation status, the boardwalk allows the beach and its amazing natural vistas to be enjoyed by all. I hope it will also encourage more people to discover the delights of Shoreham Fort which is a hidden historic gem at the entrance of the harbour.”

Councillor David Simmons, Adur District Council’s Executive Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “The beach is one of our area’s greatest assets but previously it was nearly impossible for anyone living with a mobility issue to get across the stones to watch the sunset and waves breaking.

That’s why I’ve pushed for the boardwalk to be installed. It really does make a massive difference to those with limited mobility or with pushchairs.”

The extension, which runs on land owned by the Council, will link the current walkway which ends at The Burrells roundabout with Shoreham Fort.

It will follow the existing established footpath on the shingle beach between the patches of vegetation before linking up with the West Sussex County Council-owned footpath at Forthaven.

The council has now issued a tender for companies to bid to carry out the work. Contracts are likely to be signed by the end of March with teams starting on site in May. The work will take place under permitted development rights which means planning permission is not needed.

The move has been backed by a range of partners including West Sussex County Council, Environment Agency, Shoreham Port, Shoreham Beach Residents’ Association and the Friends of Shoreham Beach.

Letters have been sent to residents of nearby properties in Old Fort Road informing of the proposed route.

Ham Manor Golf Club to Host St Barnabas House Charity Golf Day

W

orthing hospice St Barnabas House is holding a charity golf day on Thursday 29 July at Ham Manor Golf Club in Angmering, celebrating 45 years since the hospice first opened.

The event was inspired by Jim Miller and Jill Howell, Ham Manor’s Men’s and Ladies’ Captains who are supporting the hospice as their ‘Charity of the Year’.

Jim said: “We have chosen to raise money for the Hospice at Home service provided by St Barnabas House, our local hospice, as both Jill and I have had family and friends cared for by the caring and compassionate nurses of St Barnabas who have given great comfort at a very difficult time.”

Jill added: “We are so happy to be hosting the St Barnabas House Golf Day and look forward to welcoming everyone here for some good golf on our parkland course.”

and coffee, followed by an 18-hole competition on Ham Manor’s beautiful parkland course. There will also be longest drive, nearest the pin and putting competitions included in the day.

Afterwards teams will enjoy a two-course meal in the Grade II listed manor house, as well as a raffle and auction.

Mary Bye, Community Fundraiser at St Barnabas House, said: “We are really lucky to have the help of not just Ham Manor and the Captains, but Ian Jaggard and Kevin Buck MBE who have kindly given up their time to help on the committee. Places are limited, so if you have a team of four please contact us as soon as you can to reserve your place.”

The first collaboration of famed partners Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, Oklahoma! set the American musical theatre standard. Set in Western Indian Territory just after the turn of the 20th Century, the spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the backdrop for the love story between Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a farm girl. The road to true love is anything but smooth, but there is no doubt that these two romantics will succeed in making a life together. As the road to romance and the road to statehood converge, Curly and Laurey are poised to spend their new life together in a brand new state: OKLAHOMA! Director/Conductor SIMON GRAY has assembled a terrific cast for this production. In the role of Laurey is MEGAN O’HARA in her first appearance with Southwick Opera. Megan is a student at the Brighton based BRICTT where she is studying for a degree in Musical Theatre Performance. The role of Curly is played

by GARETH ASHLEY in his first role with the company after joining the chorus for Annie Get Your Gun last year. MARISA APOSTOLIDES takes the part of the flirty Ado Annie and her long suffering boyfriend Will is played by DAVID AITCHISON. Both performers appear regularly with Southwick Opera. The role of Jud Fry, the lonely, disturbed farm hand is undertaken by experienced performer ROB PIATT who has played many leading roles with various local companies. In other roles are ALISON BARAK, TONY ADAMS and DAVE MANTLE. Choreography is by Su and Wendy Galleymore and the score contains some great numbers including O What a Beautiful Morning, I Cain’t Say No, The Farmer and The Cowman as well as the famous, rousing title song.

With support from the Southwick Opera Chorus and Orchestra this production of OKLAHOMA! promises to be one not to be missed!

A Time of Preparation

B

y the time you read this, the clocks will have changed, and we will have the wonderful lighter evenings with us. Hopefully the harsh cold weather we recently experienced will be well behind us. It’s always a good reminder of how quickly things can change in the garden with the weather and how well the garden can recover after such a hard time.

It’s a time of preparation and planting, with plenty of plants and vegetable seeds to be sown and planted. Keep on top of the weeds now as they will rapidly take over as soon as the slightest hint of warm weather arrives.

Give the beds plenty of attention and they will really benefit from being forked over again, as the rain has caused so much compaction to the soil. Also, a visit to the garden centre is a good way of getting some instant colour into the garden, which probably wouldn’t go amiss after this long winter. It’s amazing how much a small amount of colour will cheer up and transform a part of the garden.

Don’t be in too much of a hurry to get young tender plants planted out to make up for lost time yet. There are still chances of cold nights and snap frosts which can wipe out your hard grown efforts in one night, so as the temperatures rise, get them hardened off outside during the day to get used to the colder nights gradually, or leave them by a sunny wall, as it will give off heat during the night.

The large amount of rainfall we had over the winter will also have caused some damage to the amount of nutrients in the soil, so it is well worth topping up beds and containers with some extra compost, liquid feed or slow release tablets to give the plants a good boost as we come into the main growing season.

Also check for damage to plants from the hard frosts and snow we had. If there are any damaged or beyond hope, then be brutal and get rid of them.

Get prepared for the coming season. Get your tools out and get them sharpened. The lawn will especially benefit from a sharp mower blade. Also give the lawn a boost with a spring feed. It has been through a lot this winter and sort out any patches that need attention. Grass seed is always a cheap and easy fix.

This time of year is certainly one of the best in the garden, with so much promise of what is ahead and new life rapidly showing with colour already from the spring flowers. After the bad winter you really shouldn’t need any inspiration or excuse just to get out there and have a go and enjoy it.

One in 25 expects tO inherit estate Of £1m According to Canada Life’s annual inheritance tax (IHT) monitor, one person in 25 expects to inherit an estate of more than £1M. The survey - which assessed 1,001 people aged 45 or more with total assets exceeding the standard inheritance nil rate band of £325,000 - also found that one person in every 50 expects to inherit more than £5M…. meaning they could face a tax bill of hundreds of thousands of pounds. the results reflect the impact of the massive increase in wealth in recent decades, brought about by rising stock markets and increased property values. the survey sponsors warned that without financial planning, much of the estate is likely to be lost in iHt which is currently charged at 40% for assets in excess of the available ‘nil rate band’ threshold. in 2017 HMrc revealed that the amount paid in iHt had reached its highest level since the current system was introduced in 1986. 2016/17 iHt receipts were £4.84billion, due in the main to rising asset values. as of today on an estate worth £1M, more than one fifth - £230,000 - would be lost in iHt. that is the equivalent of the average UK house price.

Keith Bonner, Director of Pembroke Financial Services says “People’s expectations are likely to be substantially wrong without financial planning. it is highly likely that you could lose a considerable amount of money in tax. However it is possible to ensure that by using a straightforward trust arrangement, reinforced by sensible financial planning, that the entire estate goes where it is intended…to the beneficiaries.

For those expecting around £500,000 or more in inheritance, there is still a danger of losing tens of thousands of pounds in tax and it is worthwhile talking to a professional iFa to make sure there is a sound financial plan in place. the risk of an iHt bill drops to zero at, or below, the inheritance tax threshold of £325,000.” the problem could well be compounded by the lack of knowledge surrounding inheritance tax rules.

Since april 2017 there has effectively been an additional £100,000 added to the standard iHt nil-rate band when a residence is passed on death to a direct descendant. this ‘residence nil rate band’ gradually increases to £175,000 by 2020/21 and thereafter increases in line with consumer price inflation. the combination of the transferable inheritance tax nil-rate band together with the ability to transfer unused main residence nil-rate band to a surviving spouse or civil partner has allowed the government to claim there will be an effective inheritance tax threshold of £1M in 2020/21.

3 Steps to Spring Clean your Skin Naturally

W

ith spring here and the lighter months ahead it can be important to refresh your skincare regime, to renew the skin after the tougher winter months that can cause dull, dry, oily and congested skin, or perhaps you notice some extra lines and loss of tone in the skin. It’s always possible to make an impact on how good your skin looks and it doesn’t need to be expensive or take much time.

Here’s 3 DIY steps you can do to revitalise your complexion and get it looking fresher than ever!

1. Give your Skin a Deep Cleanse If you just use soap and water or face wash, change things around with oil cleansing.

This ancient beauty practise not only deeply cleanses away dirt and dead skin cells but will also soften and refresh the skin without drying it.

You can use a cleansing balm which is a mix of oils and plant waxes that melts onto the skin, or a simplified DIY version with either coconut oil, almond or olive and try mixing in a 1/3 castor oil which is a naturally astringent and skin healing plant oil.

You can even mix in a drop of your favourite essential oil, try Geranium for rebalancing and Lavender for calming and cleansing.

Massage the oil onto the skin and remove with a flannel or muslin wrung out in warm water, leaving your skin soft and renewed.

2. Natural Clay Mask Natural clay powders can be an excellent go-to for beautifying your skin naturally, they are rich in minerals and detoxifying properties to draw out impurities and refine the pores. They are easy to obtain and affordable.

Try Green clay for oily, congested or spotty skin; Kaolin / white clay for sensitive and combination skin tones, or Pink/ Rose clay for dry, normal or sensitive skin.

Just mix a little clay with water to form a paste.

You can add a teaspoon of honey, mashed up avocado, a teaspoon of kelp powder or a drop or 2 of plant oils such as

Borage or Rosehip to add extra nourishment while the mask is cleansing.

Leave it on for a short period of 5-10 minutes and before the mask dries out, completely wash off.

Feel the freshness!

Any product you apply afterwards will be absorbed quickly and help to deeply hydrate.

3. Facial Massage Massage has numerous benefits to the mind and body, and the face will really benefit from the extra attention.

It will help the lymphatic system around the face and neck to clear impurities and work more efficiently, help the skin tone and promote greater elasticity, whilst massage can also stimulate collagen to help smooth fine lines.

I have often steered my clients away from Botox treatment by promising the benefit of regular facial massage and they have really seen a difference.

The Postcard Men of Southwick

I

n 1915, aged 26 and recently married, Joseph Gurney Ripley would set out from his new home at 10 Grange Road, Southwick, with his camera. He was a professional photographer, which was even then a precarious trade. He’d started his career during World War One when the photographic industry was very much in recession. Unable to make a living, many a photographer had given up because there was no call for their services.

Determined to carry on, the talented Mr Ripley would spend hours wandering the Sussex Downs, Southwick and Shoreham-by-Sea looking for that saleable picture.

He would return home and throughout the First World War and afterwards would print up these photographs as cards for sale.

photographed the construction of the towers and printed up an estimated 65 to 75 different postcards of them. He often titled them the ‘Naval Giants’ and sold the cards in great volume to the curious public. Despite their supposed secrecy, he was allowed to take a picture from the top of one these towers, looking east towards Brighton. The towers were not completed before the war ended.

In 1919, Joseph Ripley photographed the launch of the Concrete Ship ‘Cretegaff’ from John Ver Mehr’s yard on the south bank of the river Adur. He also moved house to 48 Southview Road. In 1922, he moved his business to Victoria Road, Southwick taking over the photographic studio of John Benn.

The studio had opened in 1909, as part of Benn and Cronin Ltd. Mr Benn and Mr Cronin (who was a Londoner) had been printing and selling photographic cards since 1906.

Their subjects included Southwick Lock, Southwick Green and St. Michaels Church. They were also commissioned to produce picture cards of A.F. Smith’s shop front in Hailsham, The Pavilion Creamery, and the Winter Garden and smoking lounge of the Marlborough Hotel in Brighton. The cards were captioned in scarlet ink and on the reverse, labelled ‘Bencro Series B & C London.’

Joseph Gurney Ripley had been born in 1889, in Twickenham, Middlesex. His father Joseph Ripley senior was a grocer’s warehouseman and his mother Ellen, the daughter of Abraham Benn, a horse trader. In 1911, in his early twenties Joseph Ripley worked as a picture frame maker and lodged with John and Winifred Brenchley at Riversdale house in Kingston-by-Sea. He married Amy Hoddinott in the summer of 1915 and the couple moved to Southwick.

In 1918, Joseph Ripley photographed the army encampment of wooden huts on Southwick Green. These had been built by and were inhabited by Royal Engineers who were working on a secret project at Shoreham Harbour.

However the project, was to build the colossal concrete Mystery Towers, and didn’t stay secret for long. Mr Ripley 18

Other cards had handwritten captions with white borders and back labelled ‘Benn & Cronin Ltd, Southwick & London’.

Among these cards were pictures of the 1908 Southwick Regatta plus the 1909 Empire Day celebrations in Southwick.

Benn and Cronin opened additional branches in 1911, at 82 Queens Road and in 1912 at 46 Trafalgar Street and also 10 and 11 Princes Street, all in Brighton.

Joseph Ripley’s postcards could be identified by their white borders and handwritten captions which were numbered and often marked ‘Photo Ripley Southwick’ on the bottom of the picture front. Among his famous views are Card 37, titled ‘Birdseye view Shoreham’, Card 72 ‘Brunswick Lawns Hove’, Card 98 is the lifeboat and crew and Card 101 is main street Sompting. Other popular local scenes included: Card 112 ‘Harvesting on the Sussex Downs’, Card 135 ‘Victoria Road, Southwick’ and Card 156 of the Old Norfolk Bridge Shoreham. Joseph Ripley died on the 26th July 1933, but his wife Amy continued running the Victoria Studio until the end of that decade.

Ingrown Toenails

W

hilst there are some nail shapes that are more prone to developing an ingrown toenail, this problem is commonly caused by trauma or poor toenail cutting.

An ingrown toenail is determined by a nail that pierces the flesh of the toe. If severe, the toe may become infected and if left untreated, the infection can spread to the rest of the toe so the quicker you treat it, the better.

People will often try to cut a ‘V’ in the nail to try to prevent ingrown toenails but sadly this is a myth.

Cutting the nail straight across, avoiding cutting too low down the sides of the nail is the best way to manage your nails.

However if you already have an ingrown toenail, see your podiatrist who may be able to treat you with or without surgery (a minor procedure under local anaesthetic).

Where does the money go?

Y

ou may be aware that your local Lions are part of an international organisation – Lions Clubs International. There is also an International Foundation which makes grants when there are disasters around the World (including this country). Adur East Lions sends up to 5% of the money raised to LCIF and the rest goes to charity work in the local area and also within the South-East District. Let’s look at a couple of examples: The Lions within the South East District agreed some years ago to support the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance but rather than have the money disappear into a large pot they decided to have a goal of enabling the air ambulance to fly at night. This entailed funding night flying goggles which cost tens of thousands of pounds each. With the help of the Lions this air ambulance is now able to fly at night saving many more lives. The air ambulance is now appealing for funds for the latest piece of technology – head scanners.

These are being developed in Sweden and can identify whether a casualty has a bleed on the brain thereby ensuring they get the appropriate treatment as quickly as possible.

You may be thinking ‘How can I help?’. If so, there is a very enjoyable way you can support this appeal and celebrate the arrival of Spring at the same time. On Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th April the Lions will be one of the charities supported by the Arlington Bluebell Walk and Farm Trail, which since 1972 has developed into seven interesting walks over three working farms. They will be collecting money at the gate and serving some delicious home-made cakes and lunches from 10am to 5pm.

Is there no end to the projects the Lions get involved with?

They are also supporting cutting edge research into blood cancers at King’s College London via LIBRA – The Lions International Blood Research Appeal which is a charity that raises vital funds to support King’s College Hospital in the fight against blood cancer. Farzin Farzaneh, Professor of Molecular Medicine at King’s College Hospital has recently shared some good news: “…our development of a new immune gene therapy for Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML), the first of its kind in the world, is

progressing very well. We recently gave our first patient, who at such an advanced stage in disease progression had a predicted survival time of only a few months, three doses and by the third injection her immune system responded. She is now in remission and we continue to monitor her progress.”

Whiplash!

T

his month we look at the painful whiplash injury, most commonly caused through a road traffic accident. If you’ve ever been unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident with another vehicle, then the impact of the collision can violently and forcefully throw the head forward and back, depending on the direction of impact, resulting in an overstretching of muscles, tendons and ligaments in the neck and shoulder region. Whiplash is as common in passengers as it is in drivers.

What causes Whiplash?

The velocity of the head being thrown forward and back causes overstretching of soft tissues around the neck and shoulder region, as well as possible compression of vertebrae, resulting in inflammation of joint and soft tissue, making movement very painful.

What symptoms would you expect to experience with Whiplash?

• S evere neck and shoulder pain • Pain felt on movement of the head • A restriction of movement in the head due to pain and stiffness • Headaches resulting from straining muscles joining the base of the skull • Nausea and dizziness • Difficulty getting comfortable in bed when lying • Pins and needles and/or numbness in the upper limbs • Pain in your neck and upper limbs when coughing or sneezing with force

What should you do if you experience Whiplash?

First and foremost, you should contact your doctor, as they may be able to prescribe painkillers or anti-inflammatories, and it will be recorded on your medical records.

Secondly, you should notify your insurance company, as medical treatment such as physiotherapy can be arranged and covered for by your insurance.

As with most acute injuries, it is important to help reduce any further damage caused by bleeding, by applying ice packs to the affected area, and to rest the area within reason, although, I do recommend very gentle mobility exercises and stretches to try and maintain movement, and so as not to stiffen up.

The earlier you can receive treatment for a whiplash, the better in my opinion, therefore if you are unfortunate enough to suffer with whiplash, you should consult a physiotherapist, who will be able to assist and speed up recovery, as well as advise about driving, and prescribe exercises to help you.

Acupuncture for Pelvic Girdle Pain in Pregnancy

F

iona Murdoch, Acupuncturist at “The Acupuncture Clinic” in central Shoreham, has postgraduate training in Acupuncture for pregnancy.

She comments, “Acupuncture for pelvic girdle pain is one of my favourite things to treat. Most women find the treatment relaxing, and in my experience, almost all women get significant, fast relief from it, feeling much improved after 1 - 3 treatments”

The research:

• The latest Cochrane review (considered the ‘gold stranded’ in research for evaluating randomised controlled trials) examined 26 trials involving 4093 pregnant women with different therapies including acupuncture and physiotherapy. Their findings were reported as: –A cupuncture significantly reduced pelvic pain more than usual care alone.

–A cupuncture was significantly more effective than exercise for reducing pelvic pain.

–A cupuncture was more effective than physiotherapy at relieving lumbo-pelvic pain and improving function • Elden et al 2005 published to date what is the largest randomised controlled trial of acupuncture for and pelvic pain in pregnancy involving 386 pregnant women.

The objective of this study was to compare standard treatment for pelvic pain (a pelvic belt, patient education and home exercises) with standard treatment plus acupuncture or standard treatment plus extra physiotherapy stabilising exercises.

The authors concluded acupuncture was superior to stabilising exercises in the management of pelvic girdle pain in pregnancy, with acupuncture the treatment of choice for patients with one sided sacroiliac pain, one sided sacroiliac pain combined with symphysis pubis pain and bilateral sacroiliac pain.

Is it safe?

Park et al 2014, examined the safety of Acupuncture during pregnancy through searching available electronic data bases for reports of adverse events.

They found that the most frequent adverse events related to pain at the needle site, with no incidence of severe adverse events considered likely to be related to acupuncture. They concluded that acupuncture during pregnancy appears to be associated with few adverse events when correctly applied.

What does the NHS say?

The NIHR (National Institute for Health Research, the ‘research arm of the NHS) reported in June 2017… “Acupuncture is not a placebo for treatment of chronic pain. This NIHR-funded systematic review shows that acupuncture is better than usual care and sham acupuncture for pain from musculoskeletal conditions, knee osteoarthritis and chronic headache.”

Finding an Acupuncturist:

Acupuncture isn’t regulated in the UK, which means that people who call themselves Acupuncturists can have anywhere between 2 days training and an Honours degree in Acupuncture. To find a properly qualified Acupuncturist, approved by the PSA (Professional Standards Association, the body that governs Doctors and other medical professionals in the UK), and who will be covered by your medical insurance, Fiona recommends only seeing a practitioner who is a member of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC). TEDDY BEARS

Carers and Toddlers Group (0–school age). Every Mon and Fri, 10–11.45am, in term time, at Southwick Methodist Church Hall, Manor Hall Road, Southwick.

Play with a huge selection of Toys, ride on bikes, puzzles, trains, play dough, craft, books, farm, prams, slide, tunnels. This is a drop in session, no need to pre-book. On Fri, we join the Pre School for a free sing-a-long for 15mins. £1 per adult, 50p per child.
