BOOST YOUR PLASTIC RECYCLING EFFORTS Residents in West Sussex will soon be able to add more plastic items than ever before to their recycling bins. From Wednesday 1 April, household pots, tubs and trays will be accepted as part of the regular recycling collections across the whole of the county.

It means you will be able to add things like yoghurt pots, ice cream tubs, fruit and vegetable trays and ready meal trays to your bins – but they must still be washed out and dried first.

It’s anticipated that recycling levels will see an increase of 4,000 tonnes per year by accepting plastic containers and will push recycling rates in West Sussex to just over 42%.

It will also bring additional financial benefits to the county, via a reduction in landfill tax payments which is currently £82 per tonne of waste delivered to landfill.

Increased quantities of good quality recycling – that’s correct items which are also clean, dry, loose - provide better value for money than sending rubbish to landfill. It also helps to conserve valuable resources.

The sale of plastic collected will also produce an additional income which will be shared between the West Sussex Waste Partnership, which is made up of the County Council, District and Borough Councils and Viridor, the county’s recycling contractor.

David Barling, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services, said: “This is absolutely brilliant news for people in West Sussex. This is something we know our residents want. Why we can’t recycle items like yoghurt pots is one of the most common questions we get asked so we are confident these changes will be welcomed. All we ask is that you make sure your recycling is clean, dry and loose. Items that have left over food and drink cannot be recycled and could ruin the quality of other items you’ve put in your bin and we’d hate to see your efforts go to waste.”

Clive Roberts, Worthing Borough Council’s Executive Member for the Environment, added: “I’m very pleased that Worthing residents will be able to recycle more of their waste. Even if you try to buy products with as little packaging as you can, it’s almost impossible to avoid plastic pots, tubs and trays - so being able to recycle these is great news for the environment!”

From the start of April, plastics that can be accepted in your recycling are: 4 Milk and drinks bottles; 4 Bathroom bottles; 4 Laundry/detergent bottles & tubs; 4 Yoghurt, cream & soup pots; 4 Ice cream & margarine tubs; 4 Cosmetic pots & tubs; 4 Food & ready meal trays; 4 Fruit & vegetable punnets; and 4 Plastic container lids (such as those used on coffee jars).

But there are still a few plastic items that you can’t add to your household recycling collections. These include: 8 Plastic carrier bags & plastic film; 8 Expanded polystyrene; 8 Plant pots & seed trays; 8 Plastic toys; and 8 Plastic furniture.

Where should I invest my money?

HE INTEREST RATES have been so low over the past few years that savers have really suffered. Many are at a loss as to where to invest their money, trawling the high street for higher rates or looking online. People have become more astute and inventive, making sure they use their cash ISA allowances each year, carefully spreading their money amongst several banks and building societies.

The providers have become clever with their marketing, offering high rates for a certain balance, or a certain period of time, but all this needs diligence! SALT-MAKING IN THE

ADUR VALLEY

S

ALT MAKING WAS an important industry in our area from before the time of the Romans up to and during the Middle Ages. The Domesday Book of 1085-6 records that there were 294 salt-works in Sussex, the most of any county in England. Of these salt-making spots, 23 were near the river Adur. The activity was at its height here during Saxon period. Salt was in those times essential for many purposes, including preserving food and it was also used in the process of curing leather.

What is now the New Monks Farm and Mash Barn area was the location of salt works in both Saxon and Norman times. It is known that salt making took place until the 14th century at New Monks Farm at Lancing, and also during the same period, salt-works were to be found further up river at Applesham, Coombes, Upper Beeding and Bramber. The oldest known bowl for boiling brine in the salt-making process in Britain was found at the New Monks Farm site. Fifteen Salterns, or low mounds of residue silt left over from salt making, are also known to have existed in the New Monks Farm/Mash Barn area.

It is recorded that between 1291 and 1341, the sea destroyed seventy saltcotes in the Adur estuary area. The river was at this time still navigable by ship beyond Old Shoreham and the sea often flooded the low-lying areas near the sea. A lagoon on the western side of Lancing also stretched inland as far as what is now Broadwater.

The salt-workings were owned by at least three religious houses in the area: Boxgrove, Sele and also Cokeham hospital in Sompting, and played an important part in their revenue raising activities. The yearly rent for these salterns was paid in salt.

The process of salt making was a relatively simple, if timeconsuming and laborious one. After a high tide, the mud and silt, which would be heavily impregnated with salt, was gathered up upon the shores of the river Adur’s estuary. This silt

was scraped into heaps that were then transferred into troughs that were used as filters. Water was then poured over the trough of silt and this helped the brine become more concentrated. The now brine rich water was finally heated over a fire in lead pans or clay pots and boiled until salt crystals appeared.

The leached out salts and silts were then deliberately dumped nearby, gradually forming substantial mounds or salterns.

There is archaeological evidence show that these mounds themselves then became used as a convenient patch of higher ground for further salt manufacturer to take place on. An average mound was about half a metre high and stretched 20 metres or so in each direction. It projected higher than the marshland that would have surrounded it so gave the salt works some protection against the constant threat of flooding.

Local names of places like Old and New Salts Farm and Saltings Lane derive from this industry. The Saltings is still used as the name for the fields just above the Brighton Road roundabout, an area unfortunately currently earmarked for further development. A person whose job was a salt-boiler was also known as a ‘Weller’, a word that has since come into usage as a surname.

Evidence appears to suggest however that by the middle of the 15th century, salt making had ceased to exist as an industry locally. Also at this time there are records of a port called Pende existing at South Lancing and mentions of foreign salt being imported locally. Most of the mounds or salterns in the Adur Valley were destroyed over time by the ploughing of the fields, but there are remnants of two salterns at New Monks Farm.

Today evidence of two of these mounds remains visible, the others long flattened by ploughing. Pottery found on the site dates one of them to occurring between the 12th and 14th centuries.

The Green Grass of Home

T’S THAT TIME of year again. The weather is improving day by day and the days are getting longer. Add to that the change in the clocks to summer time, mixed in with the Easter break and we are definitely out of the starting blocks in the race towards summer. If you love being in the garden, then enjoy every minute as it gets busy now!

With the madness of the long Easter weekend in the garden, many of you will hopefully have had a good chance to get out into the garden and got to grips with many of the jobs that have needed doing for some time. Don’t worry if you are a little late with some jobs. Nature doesn’t run to our calendar, so be

guided by the weather. If it means pruning or planting a little late, the plants will cope.

The centre piece of most gardens is the lawn. Without the sight of green grass, many people feel a garden isn’t complete.

Personally as much as I love grass I can also see the attraction of other alternatives such as gravel gardens and the ever more popular artificial grass, if it suits your circumstances and you can’t or don’t want to cope with the regular maintenance. To get the best from the lawn, taking care of it is essential. I have laid lawns that 5 years on look like bowling green’s where they have lovingly been looked after. I have also seen lawns we have laid that have been virtually destroyed in 12 months through lack of any care. Now is also a good time to look at having a new lawn laid, giving it time to establish before the drier weather sets in.

It’s the perfect time to work on the lawn and get it ready for the summer. It’s a good idea to give the lawn a feed. These are available from most garden centers and contain just the right mix of nutrients to give the lawn a boost. It takes a lot of wear and tear and is made up of lots of tiny plants after all. Follow the instructions carefully on these feeds however as too much can do more harm than good.

Get rid of any unsightly weeds such as dandelions, thistles or plantains that will be starting to show themselves. These can be easily dug out.

Any bare patches can be patched in with either seed, or new turf. If you are removing any turf for new beds, it’s always useful to look for any patches that need repair as they will blend in well with the rest of the lawn.

Before you start the annual ritual of mowing the lawn, check that the blade is sharp; otherwise it will tear the grass, causing further damage. Cutting the grass is undoubtedly one of the best ways of maintaining it. It encourages new and thicker growth and it also helps to eradicate the larger weeds. Make sure you keep the mowing regular though, and set the height of the blades to suit the growth of the lawn. A good first high cut and a trim of the edges will make the world of difference to the look of the whole garden and the smell of the grass will make you think summer is on the way.

I can almost hear the lawn mowers in the gardens in the early evenings now and the smell of the first cut grass.

Definitely one of the best times of year, so get out and enjoy it!

Give That Pain the Elbow!

This month Louis Jones will be talking about Tennis Elbow, a very common injury that affects not only the tennis player but also manual workers and desk based people who type.

What is Tennis Elbow?

T

ENNIS ELBOW OR its anatomical name, “lateral epicondylitis”, is a painful condition felt in the outside of the elbow and forearm, which is worse when gripping, such as when playing racquet sports, mountain biking, or on activities where you extend your fingers and wrists such as typing, or playing piano.

How does it occur?

The extensor muscles in the forearm that extend your wrist and fingers attach into a single point on the outside of the elbow, so when the muscles contract or tense they pull at the elbow, causing repetitive strain, trauma and inflammation, which in turn causes pain and possibly swelling.

If you are unfortunate enough to develop tennis elbow, there are certain things you can do to help the condition or alleviate the pain.

1. Use a tennis elbow strap or sports tape to compress the point of tenderness, which helps stop the muscles that pull on the elbow.

2. Use ice packs to help reduce swelling and inflammation.

3. Massage the elbow and muscles of the forearm to help reduce tension and strain on the elbow.

4. Stretch the muscles of the forearm by keeping the elbow straight, with your palm facing down and flex your wrist towards the floor.

5. Use anti-inflammatory gels to massage into the elbow.

6. If you play racquet sports, try changing the grip on your racquet to a slightly wider grip, as having a narrow grip encourages you to grip tighter. This is very common in tennis players who change racquets, to a new one where the grip is narrower.

7. Changing your posture at your desk can have a positive effect on reducing tennis elbow.

8. If you have tried these steps above and you are still experiencing pain, then you should consult a physiotherapist, who can treat the painful condition.

If you manage this condition early enough then the recovery time is much shorter and the overall outcome is very successful. It is always advisable to prevent a problem from getting worse than to try treating it once the painful symptoms are more chronic and persistent.

Foot care: Verrucae

V

Karen Burrett and Gaynor Platt, from the Shoreham-by-Sea podiatrists, First Foot Clinic, discuss the common problem of verrucae.

ERRUCAE ARE WARTS caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) that can be found anywhere on the foot but commonly occur on the soles of the feet. They can even be found around the edges of

the nails. The virus is thought to thrive in moist damp environments such as communal changing/showering areas.

An infected foot deposits skin cells onto the floor where it is then possible to walk across the same floor and pick up

the virus. Verrucae are harmless but can be unsightly and cause pain. The pain is usually associated with a build up of hard skin (callus) that can form over the infected skin.

Anyone can get verrucae but children, young adults and those that use leisure facilities are more prone.

Some individuals are more susceptible than others. The classic appearance is a cauliflower like area with black dots.

These black dots are blood vessels leaking blood into the verrucae and so may not be present even if the foot is infected. Verrucae vary in size, shape and number and can sometimes be mistaken for a corn. It is therefore, important to have the area looked at to get it diagnosed and advice can be obtained.

Karen or Gaynor will be able to advise you on a variety of treatments that are available both within the clinical setting and/or for you to try at home. Further advice will also be given to avoid spread to other areas of your feet, to others around you and preventative measures you may wish to consider for the future.

SOUTHWICK FLOWER CLUB NEEDS YOU… club organise a day trip to one of the major Flower Festivals. With Membership at just £30 per year, its great value for money and a chance to meet new people and learn a new skill.

Even if you feel you’ll never make a Flower Arranger, but love flowers, you can still come and watch and help the committee run stalls at local events encouraging others to try their hand at floral design.

Programme for 2015

In its heyday the club had a plethora of members to learn the art of Flower Arranging, be entertained with floral demonstrations given by qualified demonstrators from NAFAS (National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies). Today they seek to new members.

OUTHWICK FLOWER CLUB has existed since 1981, It was founded at a time when joining a community group was considered a great way to meet new people and learn new skills. Times have changed dramatically over the past 34 years, now its all about social media and meeting people online. Community groups seem to be a thing of the past and Southwick Flower Club is set to become one of the casualties of modern times.

Today with falling club membership and the rising costs of demonstrators, flower and travel costs the club is under threat of closure unless extra funds can be raised.

The club are putting measures in place to attempt to increase revenue from existing activities, opening up all

demonstration evenings to the public, friends and family. These evenings with the exception of the Christmas Demonstration, will continue to take place at St Michaels Church Hall in Southwick, with tickets available on the door, priced at £5.

But, what the club really needs are New Members, whether you are an experienced florist, or a complete novice to flower arranging, male or female, young or old - Southwick Flower Club needs you. The Club meets on the second Tuesday of every month as St Michaels Church Hall in Southwick. Doors open at 7.30pm. The programme alternates between practice nights and NAFAS Demonstration evenings throughout the year. There are ample opportunities to enter competitions for those who have the competitive edge and each year the

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

SOUTHWICK OPERA the use of a much enlarged stage and state-of-the-art technology.

Southwick Opera has staged some ambitious productions of many of the world’s best-loved operas, plus other musical shows and operetta, under the direction of inspired producers and conductors, notable Philip Green, who stayed with the company for 33 years. Credit must also be given to the myriad workers backstage, the excellent wardrobe and workshop teams and the efficient box office staff.

In 2005 Southwick Opera celebrated its 40th Anniversary with Eugene Onegin, which Southwick last produced in 1973.

Audiences both local and from further afield loyally support the company and are able to enjoy opera at a reasonable cost.

For the 50th Anniversary in 2015 we will be performing ‘Golden Memories’ from 14th to 16th May, celebrating 50 years of Southwick Opera with a journey through all our previous shows.

In the summer of 1965, around twenty-five people met at Southwick Community Centre in answer to an article placed in the Community News

by Mr Roy Davidson, Warden of the Centre at the time. The news item stated that while there were many classes held at the Centre, there was nothing to cover any type of musical and singing interest. At this initial meeting all aspects of forming an Operatic Society were discussed.

A steering Committee was set up with Roy Davidson appointed as 26

Musical Director and Secretary of the Company, a position he held until retirement in 1991.

The Company’s debut was Gilbert & Sullivan’s Trial by Jury, plus extracts from operetta and musicals in spring 1966.

Since then we have been a very happy and successful company and over the years have built on our experiences and expanded greatly.
