MAJOR SUPPLIERS COMMIT TO IPEX 2010

With exhibitors taking over 55,000 sq metres of floor space and preregistration fast reaching 6,000, Ipex 2010 is set to become a highlight in the international graphic arts event calendar next year.

All major suppliers have agreed location of their stands and some exhibitors have even increased the size of their stands. In particular, Konica Minolta has increased its footprint by 400%; Océ by 110%; Canon by 91%; Pitney Bowes by 64%; Fuji by 53%; HP by 40% and Ultrachem by 16%.

Over half (55%) of the exhibitors will come from overseas, notably from Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Spain, France, India, USA and China. The show will also see a significant number of first-time exhibitors; over a quarter of companies have never participated at the event thus reflecting the status of Ipex as an international launch pad to the graphic arts industry. For example, printing solutions provider Ricoh will be a prime stand holder for the first time, occupying an impressive 1,400sqm stand.

40% of floor space will be dedicated to pre-press and digital solutions suppliers, whilst press manufacturers and post-press companies will occupy 34% and 26% of the exhibition respectively.

Trevor Crawford, Ipex 2010 Event Director, says: “We’re absolutely delighted with the number of companies we’ve secured so far. Economic times may be uncertain but the global print industry is once again demonstrating its commitment to Ipex. This truly international event will feature around 1,000 exhibitors from over 40 countries representing all aspects of the graphic arts process including pre-press, press manufacture, post-press, converting and consumables, truly reflecting our vibrant industry.

“Ipex has ongoing partnerships with the industry’s supplier base and a proven capability to deliver a unique community of printers and publishers drawn from all across the world. Visitors can expect to see major technology advances and signposts to future developments with exhibiting companies committed to demonstrating working machinery on the showfloor.”

The wave of pre-registrations received also signposts towards a successful Ipex 2010. Compared to the same point in the run-up to Ipex 2006, this number has risen by over 1,045% for the 2010 show. Visitors from over 100 countries have pre-registered to date, with 75% from Europe, 12% from Asia, and 10% from Middle East and Africa.

Pre-registration for all those wishing to attend Ipex 2010 is now available via www.ipex.org/register and will result in a £30 saving off the entrance fee, access to exclusive pre-show news and highlights as well as free fasttrack entry to the show.

Océ adds colour to mod memories in Brighton

Photojournalist Horst A Friedrichs, who spent more than a decade recording the modern day British Mod community by travelling all over the UK, enlisted the support of Océ for the launch of a new book charting the history.

The award-winning fine art photographer had his works of art brought to life on Brighton seafront for the official launch of “I’m One: 21st Century Mods”, which is a compilation of monochrome and colour photographs, published by Prestel.

Mods, both young and old, were invited to an exhibition on Brighton seafront. Océ’s award-winning Arizona 350GT printed high quality prints of the photographs used for a display to officially launch the book. And then a follow-up event was held at club in London.

Friedrich, whose photography has been exhibited internationally, was born in Frankfurt and now lives in London. He said: “Océ’s contribution was fantastic.

Many people commented on the stunning quality of the prints taken from the photographs. It really helped bring a lot of colour and interest to the exhibition – book sales are going well.”

Derek Joys, Océ UK Product Manager for the Arizona 350GT, said: “We are delighted that the photographs reproduced on our award-winning Océ Arizona 350GT were so well received. And it’s great to be involved in a book that brings to life visually what people will recall is an important part of our history.”

The brochure promoting the BAPC’s Conference over the weekend of 6th November at The Crown Plaza hotel, Marlow posed a number of questions relevant to the industry today and certainly the event provided many of the answers.

The weekend began with entertainment from the off-the-wall duo of Stewart Collins and “Harry” who really got the event off to a flying start particularly with their unusual rendition of Nessun Dorma and after an hour of music and fun they had the audience baying for more.

Saturday morning saw the beginning of the serious business and following an opening welcome and address by BAPC Chairman Sidney Bobb the host for the day Declan Curry took to the stage.

Declan set the tone for the day and certainly kept things moving.

Nick Devine, the print coach was introduced and he clearly illustrated the issues facing businesses who have a desire to improve their sales and he provided a myriad of hints, tips and suggestions on how to add creativity into their businesses.

No sooner had participants absorbed Nick’s s words of wisdom and encouragement when industry stalwart Pete Lancaster took to the stage. He showed how technology has changed thorough the years and through some crystal ball gazing gave delegates an insight into the future highlighting the growing influence of social media. Time seemed to fly and following a well deserved break for lunch Declan introduced former ladies Rally champion Penny Mallory. Penny explained her background and showed the audience how to focus on achieving both personal business successes It was now time for words of wisdom from international consultant Chris Jordan who demonstrated the importance of branding even for the most modest of businesses. He used a number of companies, large and small who had developed and changed their brand and explained that a brand was not just a fancy logo but was the key to the image and ethos of any business.

Throughout the day Beatles music was played in the background and when Mike Southon took to the stage the reason for this became clear.

Mike opined that the most effective brand in the world was the Beatles and showed through their songs some important business messages. Apart from being highly entertaining delegates soon realised the seriousness of the message.

Those present were certainly ready for a break and the BAPC allowed everyone the opportunity to mix with each other at a free bar.

It was then time to freshen up and get ready for the Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony and again Sidney Bobb welcomed all and thanked the many sponsors who had made the heavily subsidised event possible.

Following a fine meal the Awards Ceremony took place with Konica Minolta appointed as Supplier of the Year and Kodak’s Prinergy Evo Workflow System selected as Product of the Year.

Both these awards were voted on by printers attending the conference.

Dale Wallis of the BPIF took to the stage as a judge for the next BAPC award. Dale explained that from the many entries for Environmental Printer of the Year there was one clear winner – Cambrian Printers and Carrick Wilkie form Cambrian graciously accepted the award.

Tony Kenton, Honorary Treasurer of the BAPC presented the award for Business of the Year and mentioned that despite the economic climate the BAPC had more entries in this section than ever before. Tony announced that the winner was Repropoint and presented the award to Alex North.

The Deputy Chairman of the BAPC Freddie Kienzler, announced that they were going to recognise an individual who had provided outstanding service not only to the BAPC but also to the Industry and, much to the delight of the audience, announced that Richard Senior Managing Director of Duraweld had been bestowed with Life Membership of the BAPC. It was now time for some entertainment and the hilarious Brendan Healy took to the stage, he had the audience in the palm of his hand and many left the room with sides aching from laughter.

It was generally agreed that this was not only one of the most effective and relevant BAPC conferences ever held but was amongst the best events arranged for the UK print industry.

CAPACITY CROWd AT ThE PRINTERS’ ChARITABLE CORPORATION’S ANNUAL LUNChEON

oVer 200 people from the printing, publishing, graphic arts and allied trades filled the Grand Hall at Stationers’ Hall on 5 November for the Printers’ Charitable Corporation’s 182nd annual fundraising luncheon.

Sly Bailey, Chief Executive of Trinity Mirror plc, proved a major drawcard as this year’s guest speaker. Named by Fortune magazine as one of the top 50 most powerful businesswomen outside the US, she oversees Trinity Mirror’s portfolio of over 140 regional newspapers, five national newspaper titles and over 400 websites.

Sly entertained the audience with epithets ascribed to her by the media, from ‘flashing blades’ at senior executives to turning into ‘axewoman’. She went on to talk about her early days in the industry and how she rose to head a major plc.

On the subject of ‘The Printed Word’, she argued that despite challenging times for traditional media, it is not a case of ‘old’ media versus ‘new’ media or print versus digital. Today’s technology is an opportunity to build a multi-platform media business incorporating online, print and mobile. Sly ended by raising an issue facing today’s publishing industry — the growing conflict between the press’s freedom of expression and the individual’s right to privacy.

At the event, Paul Rudd, the PCC’s Chairman, unveiled the charity’s new name and logo to be launched in early 2010. He also announced that Michael Johnson, Chief Executive of the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF) has been appointed the charity’s President for the second year running”.

dUPLO ENCOURAgES ‘PRINT2WEB’ AT NORThERN dIgITAL EVENT

FolloWing the success of Duplo London Calling, Duplo International continued with its latest event; Duplo Digital North. The exhibition took place at the company’s Northern Showroom in Warrington, on the 24th to 26th November aimed at organisations looking to maximise their investment in digital print technology with the very latest innovations in finishing equipment.

The event witnessed the UK launch for two new Duplo solutions. The new Digital System 3500 Bookletmaker, the DC-645IFS Integrated Folding System and e-tandem, Duplo’s new remote e-service support system. Duplo also be showcased their new Ultra 205A UV Coater and market-leading DPB-500 Perfect Binder.

Alongside Duplo starred finishing partners Renz and Friedheim International.

“We are very excited about this latest show. Our London event in September was our best on record and far exceeded expectation. Printers it seems, are beginning to see a light at the end of the tunnel and think towards the future again.” comments Peter Jolly, Marketing Manager at Duplo.

Promotion for the event incorporated Quick Response Barcoding, which enabled guests to use their mobile phones to link straight to the event bookings site via the barcode on the printed invitation mailer.

oVer 9000 attenD iPeX south asia 2009

iPeX SOUTH ASIA 2009 generated an unprecedented response from high quality trade visitors, with over 9,000 attending the four day event in Mumbai from 24 – 27 October 2009.

The exhibition opened its door on Saturday 24 October and it was inaugurated in Mumbai jointly by P Narendra of Pragati Offset, Gautham Pai of Manipal Press and Khushru Patel of Jak Printers along with Ramu Ramanathan - Editor of PrintWeek India and Bhargav Mistry of Screen Printing Association of India. Nicky Mason, Managing Director, IIR Exhibitions, representing the IPEX South Asia team was also present on the occasion.

The exhibition proved itself to be the region’s most important print event.

It provided an ideal platform for all concerned to share information not only with major international brands, but with major Indian brands as well. Some of the industry leaders that took part in the exhibition were — Canon, Xerox, HP, Kodak, HCL Infosystems/Konica Minolta, Efi, Shuttleworth Business Systems, Kern, Pitney Bowes, Epson, Gandinnovation, Apsom Infotech/Roland to name a few. Exhibitors at IPEX South Asia 2009 represented all aspects of the graphic arts process, including pre-press, press manufacture (including digital presses, newspaper presses), post-press, converting and packaging, consumables and used machinery.

Products that were introduced for the first time in India included Canon’s imagePress 1135 which is driving the digital print volume of 150 millions pages per month, Konica Minolta with bizhub pro 1200 and C65HC, HP with the Indigo 7000, Xerox with iGen4 and Docucolour 7002 and Apsom showcased Roland DG. Indian companies also made important announcements, Welbound launched its PUR perfect binder, LineO-Matic offered extended post-press solutions, The Printers House launched their folder - the Orient Xpress 122 and Megabound revealed the CB-310 semi automatic case maker for short run jobs.

Interest in digital printing and other allied verticals of the printing industry generated a commendable interest amongst the visitors and as a result the industry professionals thronged the show in very good numbers. The exhibitors sounded very buoyant after four busy days.

“IPEX South Asia is turning out to be a great show for us with the great quality of visitors that it attracts from the region. It has always been a great platform for us to share our new applications and products,” said Vipin Tuteja, Xerox India.

“We have launched three new machines and were able to sell all three of them. The idea was to generate awareness about our new offerings among the target audience”, expressed Mrs Shah from Hitech Systems “We were able to generate close to 60 leads for our offerings here. Out

of these we expect to close at least 15. Quality of visitors that the event attracted was good and matched with our target audience” informed HCL/ Infosystems.

“The target audience we were looking at was very much present here, and we were able to generate good business.

We would like to see a bigger event in the future and would look to take a larger participation - Fumiteru Minami, Efi. In addition, the Seminar Theatre was the arena of action for Xerox, Canon and Kodak, who seized the opportunity to provide tips to printing and digital professionals on how to maintain their edge. These sessions were presented by some of the industry’s brightest experts such as Dan Doron, Senior Vice President, XMPie, Pankaj Kalra, GM Marketing, Xerox India. “The exhibition offered an excellent opportunity to participate and share information across regions, enabling graphic arts professionals to take full advantage of the very latest technology to help develop their business opportunities. This extremely high profile attendance further strengthened the event, “informed Jon Johnston, Event Manager.

OkI Competition winners get an African Safari Four talented young photographers have gained a fascinating insight into the work of international wildlife charity, The Born Free Foundation, on the trip of a lifetime to the Shamwari Game Reserve in South Africa.

The secondary school pupils were joint first prize winners in a recent Tools for Schools wildlife photography competition, run by OKI Printing Solutions in conjunction with Born Free.

During their three-day trip, the children went on safari and learnt about the work of The Foundation – in particular, how it helps to prevent individual animal suffering, protect threatened species and keep wildlife in the wild.

The children also visited a nearby African school, met the pupils and found out about their daily lives. On behalf of OKI, they donated a high-performance OKI

C710 printer, which is now in active use in the school’s IT room.

OKI marketing manager, Andrew Hall says, “In an environment where budgets are tight and access to the latest technology limited, the OKI printer is proving an invaluable asset.”

The OKI Tools for Schools competition has proved a great success, capturing the imagination of pupils around the country. Konica Minolta launches mono production system Konica Minolta Business Solutions has launched the bizhub PRO 1051 mono production print system offering up to of 6,300 impressions an hour (105 prints per minute), with a maximum duty cycle of two million prints a month.

As the new bizhub PRO 1051 uses an LED (Light Emitting Diode) printer head, it requires fewer moving parts than a laser print head and is more reliable.

Because the LED printing process is less complex, it is also more precise offering superb screening and exposure quality. In addition the Linux based high performance RIP embedded with the bizhub PRO 1051 uses advanced screening technology with a tone curve utility for customised adjustment of tone curves and screening.

Substrate usage is highly flexible in weights between 40 and 350gsm. Konica Minolta’s bizhub PRO systems are designed to meet the print industry’s preferred bleed size for media of SRA3 (320 by 450mm). This allows full size A3 documents with trim marks and A4 booklets to be trimmed to size. Maximum paper capacity is 14,000 sheets from eight sources.

For online finishing the bizhub PRO 1051 offers a comprehensive range of modular options with combinations of folding, punching, booklet making, perfect binding and staple finishing all supported. Also available is a smart punch unit for GBC style binding that includes the availability of numerous customer replaceable die sets for plastic comb, velo bind, wire bind and so on. Large capacity trolley stacking units are available for off-line finishing.

As the bizhub PRO 1051 staples and punches at the full rated speed of 6,300 impressions an hour there is no loss of speed for producing finished documents as against sheet production.

Importantly, the bizhub PRO 1051 conforms to the

guidelines of the International Energy Star Program for reduced energy consumption and improved efficiency.

In addition the bizhub PRO 1051 benefits from using Konica Minolta’s patented Simitri HD Polymerised Toner with smaller, smoother, more uniform toner particles for fusing at lower temperatures and producing high quality images.

ROLAND SHIMMERS WITH WORLD’S FIRST METALLIC INKJET CAPACITY Opening up a wealth of opportunities for display producers, label and packaging specialists and sign-makers, Roland DG (UK) Ltd has launched its innovative SOLJET PRO III XC-540MT wide-format inkjet printer which features, for the first time, a metallic ink capability. Printable either as a special colour or in combination with process options, the company’s exciting development provides users with the opportunity to create a range of metallic hues, including gold, silver, bronze and pearlescent effects, which were hitherto impossible with this medium.

The 1.37 m (54 inch) machine, which incorporates the company’s ECOSOL MAX ink (ESL3-MT), has been engineered especially for a range of high-value applications, such as vehicle wraps, labels, decals, T-shirt transfers, banners, and a range of point-of-sale and sign applications. With a 41 square m/hour maximum throughput speed, the SOLJET PRO III XC-540MT features Roland’s renowned automatic contour-cutting capabilities, representing a removal of steps in the

workflow and resulting in cost- and time-reducing benefits. The print-andcut unit is engineered for unattended operation, a crucial asset to print and display producers with tight turn-around times and reduced budgets. ePson’s new range of Fine Art papers have been designed specifically for fine art reproduction, and set a new standard for the market.

Recognising that artists and professional photographers require a variety of media to produce or archive their work, Epson announces four new fine art papers. The new papers, Hot Press Bright, Hot Press Natural, Cold Press Bright and Cold Press Natural, are optimised for use with Epson UltraChrome ink technology. The papers are available in a wide range of sizes through Epson resellers. Cut sheets (A3+ and A2) are available, with rolls on sale early in 2010.

Zoom uses duplo dC-615 as ‘hub’ of the bindery coVentry-baseD digital print solutions company, Zoom Digital Print, has installed a range of Duplo print finishing equipment supplied by Duplo dealer partner Business By Technology.

Zoom was established by co-owners Peter Doyle and Richard Smith in 2008 and between them they combine over forty years experience in print and print technology.

Peter comments “We have grown very fast very quickly, which is heartening considering the current climate. With Richard’s technological background and my experience of running major accounts, we have the right systems and processes in place to give customers exactly what they require.”

“We are a digital print company and find that the majority of our work can be completed in-house on our own print and finishing equipment. This is not by chance. we actively sought equipment that suited the demands of our clients and the DC-615 Multi Finisher has now become fundamental to our business.”

Richard adds “We have vast industry experience and look to share that knowledge with our clients. We arrive at meetings with a ‘blank page’ mentality so we can discuss all the options whether we have the capabilities in-house or not. Inevitably, sometimes a job needs a process we don’t have so we outsource.

This consultative approach ensures our customers are happy and come back time and time again.”

The DC-615 Multi Finisher combines cutting, slitting and creasing all in one pass, with added features of image shift recognition software (to alleviate any print movement on the sheet to ensure accurate cutting) and barcode readers for variable data work. The machine has 80 programs to store jobs, 50 of which Zoom have utilised for common jobs, using the other 30 for bespoke ones.

The machine has been a huge success for Zoom “Since installing the Duplo it has become the hub of our bindery, most jobs in some shape or form, pass through the DC-615.” Says Richard.

“What it gives us is quick set-up times, instant recall on saved jobs and an accurate quality finish. What we did not want was a machine with lots of manual interaction. I want to be able to print and finish seamlessly.”

Zoom’s Web2Print service provides a gateway to quickly order corporate stationery and marketing materials, and it was imperative for them that the speed and convenience gained at the front end was not bottlenecked in the bindery.

“We simply download the work from our Web2Print package, print the work on the BizHubPro and then place the sheets directly into the DC-615, giving us a quality, well-finished product in a matter of minutes.” comments Peter.

As well as their Konica Minolta BizHubPro C5500 printer and DC-615 Multi Finisher, Zoom also have invested in a Duplo DF-1000 folder, IDEAL 5222 guillotine and a range of wire binding equipment from Renz.

The DF-1000 A3 folder provides the final finish to much of Zoom’s direct mail work. The machine folds jobs that have been creased on the DC-615 thus ensuring that there is no cracking on the sheet. The machine is suction-fed, minimising paper feed jams, and comes with 5 pre programmed fold types with the opportunity to set bespoke jobs. The machine runs at 14,400 sheets per hour and is designed around the needs of the digital printer.

Zoom’s IDEAL 5222 Digicut guillotine employs the latest technology to provide a quick set-up and accurate finish to digital printed stock. The machine includes a hydraulic clamp drive to enable fine control over the holding of the stack to be cut without damaging the print work. A foot pedal provides preclamping and the cutting line indicator to ensure that cutting takes place where required.

Amongst leading U.K. suppliers to the printing industry Morgana Systems is a rarity in being a manufacturer. As we are constantly being reminded, our manufacturing base continues to decline, but Morgana is one of those companies bucking the trend and each year more than 4,000 machines come off the production lines at its Milton Keynes headquarters. Over 85% of these are destined for export markets.

Morgana – a success story i

n recent years Morgana has made its mark globally as a leading innovator in the design and development of finishing systems for the digital print market, but this wasn’t always the case. Founded in 1977

by Paul Garratt and Andrew Webster, Morgana began manufacturing over 25 years ago with the introduction of the first UFO folders. These were followed shortly afterwards by a series of rotary numbering units and both these designs are still in demand today.

However, a look at what is being produced now at Morgana’s purposebuilt factory underlines the huge transformation brought about by the digital print revolution and the realisation that conventional finishing techniques could not cope with the problems it created.

Quen Baum, managing director of Morgana since 2007, takes up the story: “Digital brought in its wake a number of serious finishing issues.

Firstly was the tendency of digital output to crack when folded which was compounded by the lack of suitable ways of pre-creasing material prior

to folding. Clearly, methods such as hand creasing or using a platen or cylinder press — both needing high levels of operator skill — were totally out of place in the pared down digital environment. There was also the issue of lengthy set-up times, which again were at odds with the idea of digital being quick and easy.

“What was needed was an effective pre-creasing system that was fast to set up, easy to use and took up the minimum of space. Where short runs were the order of the day, speed of set-up was more important than basic operational speed.”

The result of Morgana’s work in this area was the AutoCreaser — first

shown at Drupa in 2000 and ever since, a best selling product throughout the world.

The AutoCreaser was the first automated means of creasing digital output prior to folding and the blade and matrix creasing method patented by Morgana for this machine has been used in all its subsequent creasing products.

While creasing was the first area to come under scrutiny, Morgana then turned its attention to folding where it was evident that folders using buckle plates and folding knives could mark delicate digital substrates. This led Morgana to invent and patent what is called ‘flying knife’ technology in which sheets don’t stop during the folding process. This technology was incorporated in another breakthrough product called the Morgana DigiFold which was the very first combined creaser and folder.

The DigiFold epitomised a new trend in digital finishing technology — multifunctionality — something which was later seen in machines like the Morgana DocuMaster that would feed, crease, fold and stitch in a single pass in order to produce high quality booklets.

Flexibility was built into these systems through the ability to by-pass certain functions when full multi-functional capability was not required.

“The successful digital printer”, remarks Quen Baum, must be able to respond quickly and positively to the needs of the on-demand digital market and flexibility is key in order to be able to change quickly from one job to another without disruption.”

The latest version of the DocuMaster is will handle variable data printing and both it and the new DigiFold 5000P are JDF ready which, according to Quen Baum, is a feature that an increasing number of customers are asking for.

AutoCreasers, DigiFolds and DocuMasters now account for a large proportion of the machines produced

by Morgana and it is a source of pride to Quen Baum and the all the other 90 plus people who work at Morgana that these products are 100% British designed and manufactured. Despite the recession there has been no cut back in the resources that Morgana devotes to R&D to ensure the continued development of products that meet market requirements.

All assembly takes place at Milton Keynes using parts sourced from engineering firms within a 25-30 mile radius and electronic components — including printed circuit boards — are also made in-house.

Quen Baum acknowledges that it is a constant struggle to balance customer demand with supplying affordable products at the right price and this

means maintaining a day-to-day awareness of market developments so that Morgana can respond quickly to trends and tailor its products accordingly.

A vital part of this operation consists in maintaining the closest links with all the leading print engine suppliers and much of this work is carried out

by Morgana’s Business Development Manager, Paul Smout.

“We are talking to print engine suppliers all the time”, says Paul “and constantly monitoring developments to see what we can up with that complements the latest techniques in

order to streamline the whole printing/ finishing process.” This co-operation with the companies for whom Morgana are preferred suppliers of finishing equipment means taking part in many joint ventures such as mini-exhibitions each year. “We are delighted to have reached a point”, Paul comments, “where print system suppliers will recommend our products as part of a total package.”

Like everyone in the industry Morgana has been finding things tougher over the past year or eighteen months, but with both export and domestic markets to aim at, the company is better placed

than many to weather the storm. In addition to working on the development of its own home manufactured products it has also been expanding its portfolio with carefully selected systems sourced from outside. The most recently successful of these is the DigiCoater, a micro-format U.V. varnishing and priming system that is proving to be an attractive alternative to laminating for many printers — not least because of the cost savings it offers and the fact that output from the system is both biodegradable and recyclable.

Three questions that will determine the value of a prospect, and focus your sales effort

Time is money, right? h

oW many times has a prospect not lived up to your expectations — or your sales people have assumed that a prospective customer: a) will place copious amounts of print only to find out they don’t OR; b), that you’ve not been dealing with the key decision maker, and in reality, they have to get authorisation or sign off their print purchases.

How many times has that enthusiasm and effort gone to waste? I should imagine the answer is lots!

customer QualiFication Qualifying and quantifying the true value of a prospect is the key to understanding their full potential as an account and whether or not the ‘opportunity’ is worth pursuing.

For the sake of avoiding being led down the wrong path, either by your own mis-guided enthusiasm, or from a badly judged assumption, there are easy basic questions to ask early on in conversations you have with the prospect. You need to establish these criteria as early on as possible, for the following reasons.

It’s not often something in the Queen’s speech is of interest to copy shops but a government announcement of changes in copyright licensing may be something heading straight our way in the not too distant future. In the middle of everything else, it’s not surprising it slipped in almost unnoticed by many in the speech, but a number of interested parties, including photographers, pricked up their ears. Martin Christie wrties…

Digital Economy in Review

T

he Digital Economy Bill is based on recommendations made by the UK Intellectual Property Office to make the non-commercial use of copyright to be simplified.The government says the recommendation “recognises the changing nature of consumption”. How far this will go to clearing up the present situation is uncertain but full discussion and consultation with interested parties is promised before it goes further, and taking them at their word, we would do well to keep an eye on the mandarins.

The reality of the “changing nature of consumption” is that the digital economy has driven a bulldozer through traditional concepts of copyright, as anyone worldwide can reproduce and exchange any digital information or image without effective immediate control.

The copy shop counter, in effect, is one of the last lines of practical defence of copyright material in that we will keep a keen eye on anything likely to be contentious. But it’s not a simple line to draw, and while the obviously blatant items — books, maps and well-known images — can be spotted immediately, there are many more things that fall into current grey areas. Moreover while we can refuse a customer request to copy such material, there is nothing to prevent him scanning or otherwise

digitising it and printing elsewhere. The home office has become the home production facility.

The secondary factor is that digital material is far more difficult to identify as copyright — to know whether the possessor actually has the right to reproduce it. Although watermarking and embedded data are available for images, they are rarely in common use, and usually only seen in the works of major picture libraries and agencies.

The vast resource of worldwide images available on the Internet, now easily accessed in seconds by search engines like Google, has no effective policing. It is just not practical on a global scale, and most browsers tend to assume that such images are free to use without any responsibility or redress, simply because no one is likely to pick them up on it.

Only major and very obvious infringements of copyright are likely to be challenged, and perhaps that is why a simplification of the current legal status will be welcome. In particular there is a recognition of the “noncommercial” use of material, this to cover items rightfully purchased and reproduced for private personal use. Where the copy shop would stand in this chain is uncertain, but a clarification is well overdue as previous guidelines are no longer adequate.

One of the moves is to recognise the officlal existence of so-called “orphan” works, where the rights holder cannot be traced “even after a full and diligent search”. Just how long a full and diligent search is likely to take is not specified, but hopefully more than a quick check on Google.

What has opened up the whole issue of course is that where once customers would take their requirements to a professional photographer, designer or printer, and material would be produced with a clear right of ownership, now virtual is able to create their own originals or copy and recreate those of others. There is no putting that genie back in the bottle and a revision of copyright law is a recognition of that.

Hopefully it will make our life easier and not even more complex. We shall see.

Something that follows on rather neatly from copyright is the ownership and responsibility for customers digital information. An issue that gets more pressing as the amount increases daily in size and scope. It’s no longer a matter of keeping a hard copy original in a drawer to be used next time, there is effectively no original. Digital files are modified, updated and rarely printed straightforwardly from whatever a customer brings in. Sometimes these are minor things, but all are equally important if costly mistakes and

wastage are to be avoided.

A complete design job is perhaps clear cut. The customer pays for a job to be done, but may not own the ‘right’ right to take the artwork away for subsequent use unless an agreement is understood. Obviously it is in the bureau’s interest to retain the original design work for future use, and it can be saved and archived. But there are many more daily items which are more difficult to classify, and they are the minor alterations made to render customer files suitable for print.

Generally these are non chargeable as we don’t expect the customer to be knowledgeable in print technique, and as we are perceived by the customer as a print on demand supplier, he doesn’t expect to be charged extra for us simply doing our job, as he or she sees it. If there is a charge, it is likely to be minimal in proportion to the cost of printing. Either way there is an incentive on the shop to save and store the print file for future use as hopefully you will retain the customer as a regular client.

But this also means saving not only the print file, but an editable version which will simplify modification at a later date.

So one small file often becomes two or three quite big ones, with some way of archiving so that the different versions can be found and identified quickly at some future time.

It would appear that the copy shop has quite a unique problem here in the pattern and profile of our customers and the nature of our work in that, as we are print on demand, the nature of it is quite unpredictable. And the things that are unpredictable are the very things that computer systems really can’t abide.

This train of thought was prompted by a long conversation with a relatively young (most people are young relative to me) IT consultant. He had found us on his database from some years ago and wanted to see if he had any solutions that fitted our needs.

I think he found the whole thing a bit of a culture shock in comparison with the more structured businesses he generally deals with. The amount and variety of digital data we have

to handle, and the time we have to process it, is quite exceptional apparently. This does not surprise me as I so often get the feeling we are more firefighters than facilitators.

He was surprised we didn’t have a budget set aside for IT issues, but as I tried to explain, if you cannot predict, it’s very hard to plan. The reality is that the work flow is expanding much faster than anyone can easily plan. Even the best experts come up with a estimation that it will continue to double in size every few years, a bit like the population of China.

It is curious that while we get a lot of feedback from readers on printers and paper and related matters, we get very little on solutions to archive digital information. It must be an issue out there but how many copy shops are on top, or getting buried by it, remains a mystery. Maybe this prompt will cause some reaction and we can help each other by sharing some best practise.

My own solution, reviewed previously in CSN, is to use Extensis Portfolio, an archive and retrieval software system that generates a small thumbnail of all files as well as embedding information in the file — title date etc, plus any key words you want to add. It is even capable of reading text in PDF files so it is an extremely powerful search engine. Other systems have been catching up in recent years and the Microsoft dog has thankfully been assigned to some suitable pet retirement home, but as a tool Portfolio remains on top of its game.

The advantages of thumbnails are literally obvious — a visual, much like an old-fashioned hard copy — is a much better prompt than a serious of anonymous digits, and because it stores them automatically, can quickly be viewed. Literally hundreds of images can be flipped through in minutes, saving time not only in finding the right image, but saving the opening of the wrong file. You can instantly see from the information associated with the thumbnail when the item was created, last modified, and what size it is.

Another time saving thing is that shared folders can be monitored and synchronised so that any updates are automatically saved in the system — so a whole bureau network can be shared and kept up to date without anyone having to spend time manually archiving

files. The archived files can be on a server, portable hard drive or CD, Extensis will let you know where to find them. You are still going to need plenty of storage space, in the real world or on line, but you need to have some system to keep abreast of the times we work in.

At least the good news is that as file sizes get bigger, the cost of memory is coming down so the multi-mega terabytes and whatever comes next will be affordable.

Visit www.extensis.com Photoshop tips for December and the New Year are very seasonal, with the popular demand for calendars and cards, a nice appropriate image is always useful, especially if you can do it quickly and it looks good. So many customers spends hours playing with Adobe’s many functions and still end up with something looking like the proverbial dog’s dinner.

In older versions of Photoshop you had no choice but to work your way through levels and hues to get near the effect you wanted, but it was a bit hit and miss, and quite time consuming.

A selection of filters added a lot more scope for artistic manipulation, and anything used regularly could be saved as an action for future use. But in versions, certainly from CS2 onwards, Adobe have very thoughtfully saved some quite simple but effecting edits for pictures that take no more than a second or two to activate. If you go into Actions and hit the top right toggle it gives you the option to load presets which involve a number of complimentary actions.

Here are some samples together with the original image of Brighton’s Royal Pavilion on a sunny day.

The steps taken in the action, layers, filers opacity etc, are retained in the History list, so if you want to stop and modify any particular one, its easily done. These are all exactly as described action apart from the snow scene where the original has been desaturated to give the effect of a grey winter’s day. Have fun experimenting when you have a moment but don’t tell the customer, they’ll think you are a wonder!

Unionist to chair PEFC

union oFFicial has been elected as Chairman of a global forest certification organisation for the first time. William Street accepted the position following a vote at the General Assembly of the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) (1), the largest organisation of

this kind in the world.

“PEFC has always been supportive of family forestry and vibrant forest dependent communities. Having a union leader as Chairman signals the beginning of the next phase in the global development of forest certification,” emphasised Ben Gunneberg, Secretary General of PEFC. “The association with global trade union federations, such as Builders and Woodworkers International, BWI, with its more than 8 million members, is a great asset as forest certification expands its efforts to assist small forest owners in the Global South to combat deforestation.”

“I would expect to see us expand our efforts to protect forests and the sustainable livelihoods they provide to local communities and families in the Global South, building on our successes

doing so in the Global North,” Mr. Gunneberg continued.

Mr. Street, who is Director of the Woodworkers Department for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, one of the largest industrial unions in North America, highlighted the pivotal role played by BWI in lobbying for the development of stronger social standards and the integration of forestry unions into the certification process, and expressed gratitude for the support of President R. T. Buffenbarger, President of the Machinists Union in this endeavour.

“It is a reality that the places where social standards are least enforced and where the benefits and wealth of forestry activity are least shared, are also the places where illegal forest activity and deforestation are often rampant,” Mr.

Envirowise experience has shown that manufacturers taking action to reduce waste and improve their resource efficiency can save up to £1,000 per employee. Across the UK, around £500-million could be saved annually.

Envirowise Production Specialist Michael Savage said: “Rethink Waste provides an excellent opportunity for manufacturers to improve their resource efficiency, and make cost savings, in a planned and measurable way. But with the deadline for registration fast approaching, companies need to act quickly if they want to take part in the initiative.”

Head of Environment at the EEF, Gareth Stace, adds: “Free initiatives such as Rethink Waste offer a practical and accessible route to resource efficiency and we are encouraging our members to take part.”

Every one of our innovations ended up either saving us money or creating new markets and new revenue. We found, in other words, that we don’t have to choose between the environment and profit. We can do both.”

“This requires that there is a market for certified tropical wood - otherwise, economic viability is difficult to achieve,” Mr. Street said. “Thus, boycotting products from sustainably managed, certified tropical forests is the quickest and most effective way to contribute to deforestation, community disruption, and social hardship.”

“I am looking forward to working with global forest leaders to promote forest certification to support our common efforts to safeguard these important ecosystems, the biodiversity they sustain, and the livelihoods that depend on them,” he concluded.

Arjowiggins Launches Photobook arjoWiggins Graphic manufacturer of innovative environmental paper solutions, has launched the ‘Copenhagen Co2mmitment’ book. The special collection of photography depicts life in Copenhagen – the Danish capital city set to host the United Nations Climate Change Conference this month.

CO2dE - helga C. Theilgaard’s diverse images combine what she describes as Copenhagen’s “all-embracing locations” with “the cold, rejecting places” of the capital. Featuring portraits of a mother and baby as well as young people in the city, each shot captures a “secret” moment in the lives of Copenhagen’s inhabitants.

The book is the latest stage in Arjowiggins Graphic’s campaign to support the environmental conference. 2000 copies have been produced and are being distributed to designers, marketing managers and print management companies. Those receiving the book have the opportunity to sign a Europe-wide eco petition pledging support to the conference and a commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Arjowiggins Graphic will present the results of the petition to the Chairman of the United Nations Climate Change Conference.

A little story for parents with kids at Uni. Mum and dad are very proud of their daughter Becky. She has her place at university and will probably do well.

But Becky is becoming weary of their somewhat stifling and over zealous pride in her. Time is going by and mum and dad have not heard from her, Of course, they are quite concerned. Panic begins. But then a letter arrives and they read it eagerly:Dear Mum and Dad, Everything is fine here…well sort of. I do have a bit of difficult news. It’s just that my room-mate and I were involved in the burning down of the college.

Don’t worry. It seems that the curtains caught light from the marijuana we were smoking. At least that’s what they are telling us. My new boyfriend is being very helpful with all the police enquiries. Zed is a nice chap, although he doesn’t have a job and is a bit of a wanderer. As the college is burned down and I have nowhere to stay, Zed said I could move in with him. But don’t worry, I won’t move in with him – at least not until the baby is born.

P.S. None of the above is true, but I did fail an English exam.
