Aircraft IT Operations: projects are how we get things done but we need to be sure that they’re integrated, timely and appropriate Life is full of projects. Some small, some large; and it seems that most projects undertaken by airlines at the moment fall into that latter category. Perhaps it’s because so much is developing around commercial aviation and all at once. EFB roll-outs, emissions controls, fuel management, divergent business models (full service vs low cost), digital communications, mobile technology, intelligent aircraft… the list is long and most airlines and operators want to either comply with or get the best out of them all. However, there are risks inherent in projects.

A project can run for far too long a time, inviting the risk that either it will be out-of-date even as it completes or that the need for which it was conducted has gone away – life goes on. Also, different projects in the organization can clash, not just in their use of resources but also in the risk that they’ll create contradictory processes within the business or that they’ll duplicate processes whose purpose is common to both projects. The other big risk is that the organization becomes so engrossed in the project that the core objectives of the business become starved of resources and suffer accordingly. Hopefully readers would never fall into these traps.

In this issue we look at how running an EFB project as a resource for the whole airline can improve the chances of success and the value gained from the effort. We also look at an ambitious project to supercharge a project and make all aspects of an airline’s operations not just up-to-date but future ready. And we look at the enormous challenge of a project to introduce EFB capability to a very large fleet of mixed types and mixed generations serving diverse markets.

Two new customers for OpenAirlines’ SkyBreathe® fuel efficiency solution

AIR MÉDITERRANÉE REDUCES ITS FUEL CONSUMPTION USING OPENAIRLINES’ SKYBREATHE FUEL EFFICIENCY SOLUTION

IN a late October 2014 announcement, it was confirmed that Air Méditerranée has signed a partnership with Open Airlines to install SkyBreathe® Fuel Efficiency, an innovative software solution which will reduce the airline’s carbon footprint and save fuel. The solution developed by Open Airlines will allow Air Méditerranée to save from 2% to 4% on its fuel consumption.

SkyBreathe® Fuel efficiency analyzes extensive data on each phase of the flight and provides detailed guidance to optimize fuel consumption. The software was deployed at Air Méditerranée at the end of 2013.

With an increase in scheduled flights, this partnership is part of Air Méditerranée’s energy efficiency project. For the Winter season, Air Méditerranée will operate scheduled flights from seven French cities to 14 destinations in eight countries, in addition to its leisure flights.

HERMES AIRLINES CHOOSES OPENAIRLINE’S SKYBREATHE FUEL EFFICIENCY

In mid-March 2014, Hermes Airlines based in Athens announced that it will use SkyBreathe® Fuel Efficiency software solution to reduce its carbon footprint and save fuel. The solution, developed by Open Airlines, will allow Hermes Airlines to save from 2% to 4% on its fuel consumption.

SkyBreathe® Fuel efficiency analyzes extensive data on each phase of flights and provides detailed guidance to optimize the fuel consumption. Hermes Airlines offers flights from Greece to Italy, Israel, UK, Spain and domestic destinations.

Appointments, partnerships and approvals keep DAC International moving forward DAC INTERNATIONAL NAMES STEVE DAVIS DIRECTOR OF TECHNICAL SUPPORT AND BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

DAC International, a Greenwich AeroGroup company, has named Steve Davis as Director of Technical Support and Business Development. The mid-February 2014 announcement added that Mr. Davis had formerly served as DAC’s Director of Airline and Government Sales.

“Steve is a seasoned aviation professional who brings a great deal of knowledge to our team,” said General Manager of DAC International Francisco Hernandez. “Moving him into this role should increase our ability to identify new potential partners.”

Mr. Davis’ new role will consist of assisting all sales staff with technical issues, proposals and research as well as assisting in the identification of potential new business partners for the company. He has been with the company since 1996 and had previously worked for it from 1987-1990.

INGENIO AEROSPACE AND DAC INTERNATIONAL INTRODUCE INGENIO SMART SOLUTIONS FOR CABINS AND COCKPITS

DAC International and INGENIO Aerospace announced in early March 2014 the debut of INGENIO Smart Solutions. With the major shift to Wi-Fi connectivity and content distribution in the corporate aircraft industry, INGENIO Smart Solutions provides a comprehensive hardware solution with the Smart Cabin Arm, Smart Cockpit Arm and Smartphone Holder. This suite of products accommodates different formats and supports all leading tablets, Electronic

Flight Bags, smartphones and MP3 players.

“Our Smart Solutions transforms the cabin and cockpit experience,” said President of INGENIO Aerospace James Bell.

“We focus on creating products that provide both dynamic and functional environments within the cockpit or cabin of the aircraft. Our objective is to create ergonomic, reliable and thoughtful designs for clientele aspiring to stylized products.”

DAC INTERNATIONAL SECURES SUPPLEMENTAL TYPE CERTIFICATE FOR AN ADS-B OUT SOLUTION FOR THE SIKORSKY 76 PLATFORM

DAC International announced in mid-March 2014 that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has approved its supplemental type certificate (STC) for the Trig Avionics TT22 transponder with the FreeFlight Systems 1201 WAAS/GPS sensor. This STC ensures ADS-B Out compliance for use with the Sikorsky S-76 A/B/C models. The TSO-certified 1201 GPS/ WAAS Sensor provides position, velocity, and time (PVT) data to integrated navigation systems. Small, lightweight, attractively priced and easily installed, the 1201 supports oceanic and domestic, en-route, terminal, non-precision approach and departure operations and meets ADS-B accuracy requirements worldwide.

“This is a cost-effective and mandate-ready solution for S-76 operators,” said General Manager of DAC International Cisco Hernandez. “We worked with

our integration and certification partner, Peregrine, to bring this NextGen STC to the rotorcraft market and Peregrine’s ADS-B certification experience was apparent throughout the project.”

Trig’s TT22 transponder replaces the non-ADS-B transponder and is the smallest and lightest (0.8 lbs) transponder, allowing the unit to fit into the tightest of panel spaces. It is an approved Class 1 transponder which meets the ADS-B functions of DO-260B Class B1S as well as FAA TSO C112c and C166b.

The Trig TT22 also meets all equal ETSO requirements in Europe.

DAC INTERNATIONAL SECURES ANOTHER PARTS MANUFACTURER APPROVAL

ALSO in mid-March, DAC International announced that the Federal Aviation Administration has provided Parts Manufacturer Approval (PMA) for the company’s Electronic Flight Bag system including the RPU, Display and Tray assemblies.

The PMA was issued as a result of the Supplemental Type Certificate obtained earlier in the year for DAC’s Gen-X EFB e-Enabling program that is installed in the cockpit and cabin to support a wide range of applications including system interfaces to the aircraft navigation systems, EFB functionality for charts and aircraft documentation, communication system interfaces for text messaging, maintenance support, e-Commerce applications as well as cabin applications for customer support.

The PMA approval was accomplished by DAC International’s Engineering and Certification Division (ECD) and supports the Boeing 777-200/300/300ER series aircraft.

CITYJET signed an agreement with Aviaso, announced in early May 2014, for the implementation of a fully automated EU-ETS verification and reporting tool. By providing automated data collection, integrated verification routines, and comprehensive reporting, the software from Aviaso is ensuring full compliance with the European Union Emissions Trading System legislation.

“EU-ETS reporting is a demanding topic which requires rigorous quality checks and can be very time consuming.

We have chosen Aviaso for our EU-ETS reporting, since their solution is already proven at several airlines and will significantly ease our data quality and verification process.” says Jack Killoch, General Manager Flight Operations at CityJet. “Even though CityJet is a medium-sized airline, we have a relatively complex setup with many wet lease-in and wet lease-out flights and several IT systems with which the new EU-ETS solution has to integrate. After evaluating several solutions, the Aviaso software [met] all our requirements. Furthermore, we have checked several airline references and the feedback we received was very good.”

The Aviaso/EU-ETS solution ensures full compliance with the EU Emissions Trading System legislation. The software supports fully automated data collection, and comes with adapters that connect directly to all the major airline IT systems. High data quality is achieved with numerous ready-made validations and cross-check routines. Flexible customization allows further validations to be added according to the airline’s monitoring plans and other needs. In addition to all standard EU-ETS reports, many more reports are available for in-depth analyses and auditing purposes.

MONARCH AIRLINES COMMITS TO FURTHER IMPROVE FUEL EFFICIENCY WITH SOFTWARE FROM AVIASO

MONARCH Airlines has signed a contract to continue the use of the fuel conservation software developed

by Aviaso.

The Aviaso/Fuel Efficiency solution has been in use in the London-based carrier since 2012. Extending the contract with Aviaso, as announced in mid-April 2014, is yet another step for Monarch to take towards achieving the goal of 6.8% improvement in fuel efficiency by the end of 2015.

“At Monarch we recognize that in the airline industry we must play our part to help reduce emissions. A number of steps have been taken within our business to achieve this”, says Nils Christy, Director of Operations, Monarch Airlines “Our goal is to achieve 6.8% improvement in fuel efficiency by the end of 2015. To do that, we are adding new fuel-efficient aircraft to our fleet and replacing old ones. Furthermore, we are implementing a series of initiatives on the ground and during flight which help us saving fuel. To measure these initiatives and identify additional fuel savings, we are using the fuel conservation software from Aviaso. The Aviaso/Fuel Efficiency software was deployed at Monarch in 2012. We have decided to extend the contract with Aviaso since we are very happy with the software, its powerful functions, and the good support from Aviaso.”

The fuel efficiency software from Aviaso includes more than 100 ready-made analysis reports. These reports allow an airline to thoroughly understand their fuel consumption and to identify potential fuel savings.

Furthermore, the Aviaso solution not only identifies the fuel savings, but also helps in really achieving those savings by rigorously monitoring the various fuel savings initiatives for each and every flight.

“It gives us a great pleasure to work with one of the leading airlines in implementing fuel efficiency initiatives”, says Rudolf Christen, CEO of Aviaso. “Monarch Airlines is setting an example in weight reduction initiatives and ground and flying procedures that reduce fuel usage significantly. It is nice to see how Monarch is taking advantage of the capabilities of our software to measure and manage fuel saving initiatives such as single engine taxiing, continuous descent approaches and reduced flap settings to name a few.”

2MoRO announces the release of a new module: Aero One® Flight Operations IN addition to enhancements for the ergonomics and features in terms of maintenance execution (Part 145), 2MoRO announced in early April 2014 the release of a new module: Aero One® Flight Operations.

This module is designed to enable airlines and aircraft operators to schedule and record flight operations and to be the source of data needed for maintenance planning.

Whether for an airline or an aircraft operator, this module has been created to fulfil expectations. Knowing that each business is different, 2MoRO has designed features to adapt to each user’s specific constraints in terms of flight planning and crew assignment. 2MoRO Solutions looks forward to letting potential users discover the two main pillars of Aero One® Flight Operations’ first release: Flight Scheduling and Flight Records.

As part of the solution, a cockpit has been set up to consult and smoothly drive the whole of flight operations.

Users will see at a glance what has been planned and be able to compare it against what actually happens. Moreover, the Flight Scheduling feature allows the creation and updating of flight schedules. A user-friendly and interactive interface will display them in a calendar time grid. Users can track the status of flights for their fleet (planned, arrived, delayed) and be alerted by visual signals when a flight is delayed or cancelled. Additionally, the creation and management of recurring flights will help to work smarter, be proactive and reduce the duplication of effort.

The Flight Records features are used for actual post-flight data collection, as provided in pilot’s log. The can simply

and quickly capture and keep history for analysis of time updates, crew information, liquids, fuel & oil consumption, PAX & loads and counters. Directly connected to the Aero One® Fleet Management module, this functionality is particularly useful for calculating the actual flight time, keeping an account of the aircraft/equipment flight hours and updating counters. It will help users keep all their fleet data up to date for maintenance activity. Also, if it is preferred to record flight information for a working day at one time rather than piece by piece, the Daily Flight Log feature will be very convenient.

In addition to this new module, 2MoRO has added advanced functionalities to simplify the jobs of sales and logistics departments.

The ‘Sales Cockpit’ allows easy creation of sales documents (quotation and invoices) from technical information fed by the technical staff. Whether to create a quotation from the results of an inspection process or create time and material invoices, Aero One® can do it all flawlessly. So, the Sales Cockpit provides a range of features to easily get the sales inputs and finally create the document in a few clicks.

Meanwhile, the Logistic Cockpit summarizes in an easy-tohandle way all logistic information and stock movements to perform or to be performed in relation to a maintenance project. No need for complex searches to retrieve what has to be done, it is all there. Quick access to standard stock transactions is of course part of this cockpit.

Helvetic Airways implements the PFB™ paperless flight bag EFB platform from IFS

IFS (International Flight Support), the Copenhagen based EFB Software Platform provider, announced at the end of February 2014 that it had signed a contract with Zürich, Switzerland based Helvetic Airways for the implementation of the PFB™ paperless flight bag from IFS. Helvetic Airways operates a fleet of Airbus A319 and Fokker 100 aircraft on their well-established European scheduled route network plus extensive scheduled charter flights into Northern Africa and the Canary Islands.

“Helvetic Airways selected the comprehensive PFB™ paperless flight bag software solution from IFS because it copes with our current and future demanding operational requirements. The PFB™ will be a cornerstone in our operational set-up and its flexibility [ensures] that we can meet our long term EFB strategy goals”, Mr. Bruno Jans, CEO of Helvetic Airways said.

The first phase of the implementation project started at the end 2013 covering the Fokker 100 fleet. Helvetic Airways will implement the PFB™ paperless flight bag software in the iPad version as a full Class II-b solution for all-phases-of-flight use. The project includes the advanced PFB™ Back-Office System which: powers the PFB platform, centralizes all data flows and controls data import/export to back-end systems and manages all individual deployed EFB units. ”The user-friendly, effective and yet flexible architecture provided by the PFB™ Paperless Flight Bag gives Helvetic Airways the opportunity to bring even more automation

into its processes thus reducing workload on flights as well as for ground personnel. Furthermore we will have the capability to improve lines of communication within our organization resulting in a yet more efficient way of working.” said Mr. Christian Suhner, responsible for IT Projects and F/O (flight operations) at Helvetic.

IN mid-February 2014, navAero announced that Iberia, part of the International Consolidated Airlines Group, S.A. (IAG) has chosen the navAero iPad Air Class 2 EFB system as the platform of choice for their expansive electronic flight bag initiative.

The highly adaptable navAero iPad ‘Smart’ Mount system with the built-in power/data interface module will be deployed with the Universal Aircraft Interface Device that will provide for certified connectivity to aircraft power as well as ARINC 429 & 717 data and aircraft discretes. The integrated system will allow Iberia to realize maximum functionality of the iPad Air tablet as a deployed EFB platform.

Iberia will launch the EFB deployment program with their Airbus A319/320/321 fleet: first installations are planned in early first quarter 2014. The Airbus A330 and A340 fleets will follow. Later on, towards the end of February 2014, navAero announced the achievement of obtaining MFI approval from Apple on the navAero Power/Data Interface Module for the company’s iPad Class 2 EFB system.

As an Apple MFi – approved Made For iPad manufacturer – the navAero iPad ‘Smart’ Mount holder can be integrally equipped with the MFi-approved Power/Data Interface module that incorporates the Apple Lightning connector to provide connectivity compatibility for bringing power and data into the iPad. The navAero iPad EFB System itself consists of a modular, proprietary designed ‘Smart’ Mount tablet holder that securely contains that iPad device and meets all appropriate DO-160 requirements. The holder is provisioned with the navAero Power/Data Interface (PDi) module that converts 28VDC from the aircraft power to power that is appropriate for charging the tablet device.

The PDi module also feeds aircraft data (ARINC 429, 717, Discretes) from the navAero Universal Aircraft Interface Device (UAID) to the tablet, for use in various software applications along with capability for WiFi and cellular connectivity. The UAID also provides built-in capabilities for QAR functionality.

By mid-March 2014, navAero was able to announce receipt of an EASA STC (10048381) on the Bombardier DHC-8-400 Series for the installation of Class 2 Tablet Electronic Flight Bag provisions for the navAero Tablet EFB System that includes the navAero Universal Aircraft Interface Device (UAID). Provisions include pilot/first officer cockpit mounts that feature electrical connectivity for device charging and the option for data connectivity. The STC was granted as a validation of FAA Supplemental Type Certification (FAA STC ST03170NY) which has also received validation by Transport Canada (SA13-69).

The navAero Tablet EFB System consists of a modular, proprietary ‘Smart’ Mount tablet holder that securely contains that tablet device and meets all appropriate DO-160 requirements. The holder is integrally equipped with the navAero Power/Data Interface (PDi) module that converts 28VDC from the aircraft power to power that is appropriate for charging the tablet device. The PDi module also feeds aircraft data (ARINC 429, 717, Discretes) from the navAero Universal Aircraft Interface Device (UAID) to the tablet for use in various software applications. The UAID also provide the capability for enabling Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity along with built-in QAR functionality.

The EASA STC allows for installation of the mount and provisions for either just power or for both power and data which includes the navAero UAID. The STC was executed by navAero in cooperation with Delta Engineering who handled the validation process.

The navAero EFB system uses an architecture that consists of dual cross-connected tablet devices with Ethernet connectivity to the navAero UAID. It allows for multiple variations of tablets to be hosted to achieve maximum flexibility and upgradeability.

Rounding off the quarter, towards the end of March 2014, navAero announced tthat Meridiana Group has chosen the navAero iPad Air Class 2 EFB system as the platform of choice for their expansive electronic flight bag initiative.

The relationship also includes the creation of a strategic partnership with Meridiana Maintenance S.p.A. DOA (EASA.21J.470) who will provide engineering services for the installation of the EFB systems on the Meridiana fleet as well as for other airline fleets.

Meridiana Group will deploy the navAero iPad Air EFB system fleet-wide which will include Airbus A320, Boeing B737, B767 and MD-82 aircraft. First installations are planned for mid-2014.

The highly adaptable navAero iPad ‘Smart’ Mount system with built-in power/data interface module will be deployed with connectivity to aircraft power for device charging. Optional deployment of the navAero Universal Aircraft Interface Device for certified connectivity to ARINC 429 & 717 data and aircraft discrete will be included in the certifications. The integrated system will allow Meridiana Group to realize maximum functionality of the iPad Air tablet as a mounted Class 2 EFB platform for use in all phases of flight.

SITA extends reach in Africa and adds two Indian airlines to the community ANGOLA’S ANSP PARTNERS WITH SITA FOR SAFER SKIES

THE Luanda flight information region (FIR) over Angola is set to support aircraft using future air navigation system (FANS) data link avionics with the deployment of the SITA FANS system communicating via the SITA AIRCOM data link service. The technology is being implemented

by Empresa Nacional de Exploração de Aeroportos e Navegação Aérea E.P. (ENANA), the company that controls civil air traffic in Angola.

The announcement, made 6th March 2014 at World ATM Congress 2014 in Madrid, marks a new era of air traffic management in the region in line with ICAO recommendations for improving communication, navigation, and surveillance in the Luanda oceanic FIR. Aircraft using FANS controller-pilot data link communications (CPDLC) will provide a more accurate way for air traffic controllers and pilots in this region to communicate during flight. In addition, automatic dependence surveillance contract (ADS-C) tracking will send aircraft positions to be displayed on the ground system with greater precision, in particular when radar coverage is unavailable. Both pilots and controllers will benefit from a reduced workload and greater confidence in the accuracy of information being transmitted between them.

Philip Clinch, SITA Vice President Aircraft Solutions, said: “This move to FANS by ENANA brings Angola in line with other countries in the AFI (Africa Indian Ocean Region). SITA’s systems enabling data link will allow for the improvement in the overall accuracy and reliability of information exchanged between aircraft and controllers on the ground. Boeing FANS-1 avionics and Airbus FANS-A avionics provide ADS-C and CPDLC applications which improve safety by enabling more accurate information transfer between aircraft and air traffic control (ATC) operators.

ADS-C improves the surveillance of aircraft by allowing automatic digital reports on positions to be sent to air traffic controllers without the need of any voice reporting from the flight crew. It is used in remote oceanic areas when radar is not available and HF radio voice communications are unreliable.

CPDLC allows flight crew to send and receive standard ATC messages in a form similar to email which replaces routine voice communications between them and air traffic controllers. Studies have found that the availability

of this second communication channel reduces errors caused by factors such as very high traffic levels, poor voice quality, fatigue or simultaneous transmissions.

ENANA joins GCAA, Ghana’s ANSP, in using SITA’s systems and services to comply with the ICAO regional regulations ensuring safer and more efficient skies across the continent of Africa.

In close cooperation with its IT department, Aeroflot Operations has put on ‘seven-mile boots’ for a challenging speed-jump into the future of fully integrated eOperations. The recipe for success is simple: create a team of highly skilled and experienced operations and IT staff, and add third party expertise and best practice IT solutions. The result is a sound ground based solution topped by a distinctive customization towards a future eOperations environment, all in close cooperation with and acceptance by the business. The combination helps avoid common IT implementation failures such as customizing applications to current practices without re-engineering or challenging those current practices and then wondering why, with the IT upgrade, the promised savings are not achieved. This strategy will not only allow Aeroflot to ‘walk and run’ at an amazing pace but it will turn Aeroflot Operations from a printed paper, fax, telex, HF and VHF operator into a fully integrated eCommunication and eOperations airline.

Aeroflot is currently setting the base from which to speed-jump by implementing an integrated Operations IT infrastructure with the latest decision support solutions. At the Operations Control Center (OCC) a new control center suit has replaced different legacy solutions and manual workarounds in a new infrastructure. Within this framework Aeroflot has replaced crew planning and management, flight planning and Operations control solutions; heading to a fully integrated real-time operations decision support solution in the OCC. On the ground, the OCC solution is complemented by the implementation of a state-of-the-art Hub Control Center (HCC) system based on an holistic real-time collaborative decision making functionality. It covers all aspects and engages all stakeholders in turnaround performance and passenger connection management. When it

This will be the differentiator for the future.

TECHNOLOGY SPEED JUMP

Aeroflot has been driven by and overloaded with printed documents (loadsheet, PIL, manuals, etc.), manual data entries and voice communication. To reduce the overload of voice communication, ACARS and PDAs have been introduced. ACARS has been introduced for OOOI (Out of gate / take Off / On the ground / In the gate), aircraft positioning, maintenance and flight related information (flight plan, weather, loadsheet, etc.) exchange between ground and cockpit. However, a fully ACARS message managed airline on the ground and in the air isn’t the target with the latest options of satellite, 3G, wireless and RFID communication offering greater coverage. At the same time the introduction of PDA solutions on the ramp has improved performance management and massively reduced voice communication overkill.

However, the automation of sharing information is to be improved to a bi-directional exchange of information on passengers, loading / weight & balance, TOBT (target off-block time), delay codes, specials or next information status.

Facing a not so easy hub and passenger connection environment Aeroflot

bridges this by close cooperation with its partners. It is and will be Airport CDM (collaborative decision making) decisions and predictability based on precise real-time information which will be the differentiation factor to allow peak operations at capacity limits. In regards to real-time information the target is not to follow step-by-step the path already beaten by others, but to join forces with leading industries to determine and implement leading solutions.

Industry leaders have based ground and cockpit communications on ACARS messages, a highly cost intense mode of communication. While Aeroflot has discussed with the Civil Aviation Authorities approval for and introduction of classic modes of operations communication, the airline now aims to gain 3G, 4G or wireless capabilities which will transfer data flows from the aircraft via EFB. Aeroflot has a reactive in-flight support established via ACARS. The OCC reacts to cockpit requests as soon as the flight plans have been shared. With the new flight planning system implemented, Aeroflot aims to introduce a proactive inflight dispatch support to supply the cockpit with latest weather, fuel saving, route, airport, ATC or passenger connection information whenever savings or better information are available. This is also where the business starts driving IT, working on variable taxi times, flight planning and minimum ground time management to reduce fuel burn and holdings in a non-coordinated airport environment and gain the last minutes for saving passenger connections.

IMPLEMENTATION AND A NEW OPERATIONS ORDER

While implementing the ground base, Aeroflot also investigated the latest means and fit of data as well as information exchange for ground communication to allow faster and better decisions. For core stakeholders Aeroflot aims for full interactive, mobile, real-time information device interaction (PDAs and tablets as well as smart phones) to assure the highest levels of passenger care and satisfaction and, at the same time, provide all parties with the latest information.

The vision Aeroflot has in mind is that the Ramp Agent PDA device will change from an ‘entry of time stamps’ device (e.g. start and end of a turnaround process like cleaning, catering, or fueling) into a device automatically displaying the situation and creating awareness for critical situations.

Today the Ramp Agents react to Ground Dispatch or HCC advice and collect time stamps (pure outgoing channel of data). Their decisions are based on information received verbally or based on the status when they left their office. Especially during disruptions, there is not much time to investigate the situation or to consider solutions to meet connections

or to save the turnaround. The only party with the full overview is the HCC. With the introduction of interactive devices the ramp agent will change from an order receiver to a solution manager by being integrated in the information loop. They will change from a human entry interface to an empowered manager of the turnaround who manages the situation and suggests solutions based on the information. The idea is that the PDA will be a decision support tool for the ramp agent, highlighting irregularities and late processes and what is not in line with common practice. This also means a change of business processes in such a manner that the ramp agent applies management by exception through following up disruptions based on the information displayed in real-time.

Like many other airlines, Aeroflot cares about passenger satisfaction and service quality which is closely connected to the latest information on a passenger’s travel / flight status. The passenger service agents work with mobile phones and HF devices where the latest information updates are only received verbally.

In times of disruptions this flow of information is not manageable. Therefore the aim is to provide the station team with mobile devices that give them the

latest updates on passenger connections, flights and the individual status of the passengers they will support right upon their arrival… as well as allowing the setting of time stamps for the processes they own (e.g. boarding, start and end of a connection process, etc.).

Devices will also be available for the cabin crew to add comments, set time stamps, document the cabin flight report and to provide them with the latest passenger and flight information (PIL, special meals, service, connection information, etc.).

Over years the time stamp setting responsibility and correctness has been an issue for managing processes.

The question was, ‘who sets the time stamp?’ the process owner (e.g. catering truck driver, catering loader), the process supervisor or the ramp agent? Even with today’s set up of the ramp agent as a ‘neutral’ party setting the time stamp for the start and end of a process, by pressing the respective button on the PDA display, the correctness of the time is open to dispute. Other airlines decided to apply ACARS messages to determine the start and end of a process.

With this approach a time frame is set (e.g. for the ACARS message of right forward or aft cabin door opened and closed). However it does not necessarily mean that a process has started or ended, so certain intelligence as well as process owner time stamps have to be additionally implemented to allow the holistic management of process performance by time stamps.

The future for the correct automation of time stamps will be provided by RFID based technology.

RFID is slowly making its way into aviation: the technology has already been introduced to aircraft manufacture, baggage management, paperless check-in and maintenance. RFID has not yet been introduced for turnaround management. However, the RFID business case looks promising but needs a massive infrastructure investment which has not so far been undertaken by any airline. With the introduction of the new HCC turnaround management system, Aeroflot will apply the proven PDA based technology in place while at the same time investigating how and when RFID could replace ACARS and manual PDA entries.

At the same time the team is brainstorming whether head up displays (HUDs) could be an option instead of PDA devices which can be hard to read, handle and carry in winter operations.

IMPROVEMENTS FOR PASSENGERS

Compared to operations information, passenger information management is fragmented. Aeroflot has a webpage where passengers are informed as well as classic customer service call centers. The airline also started to inform connecting passengers in-flight about their onward connection status and give them advice and assistance in case of a disruption via an ACARS message sent from the HCC to the cockpit to be shared by the cabin crew with the passengers. Tomorrow’s

wireless IFE (in-flight entertainment) communication will allow passengers to access services such as satellite live television broadcasts as well as safety instructions in their native language. The IFE will also display connecting flight information turning a common announcement of gate changes into an individual one for each passenger with individual assistance and advice as to how Aeroflot will ensure their seamless onward connection or being advised about how Aeroflot will take care of them if a connection is lost. Moreover individual information shared with the passenger via phones and tablets aims to enhance communication as well as interaction to assist and guide them at all times during their connection and beyond.

The setting of an integrated holistic Operations vision, the determination of a strategy, the transfer of the blue print to an action plan on how to achieve it complemented by a cost benefit analysis proving that transparency and real-time information pays off is a challenge in itself. Aeroflot has managed this phase in close cooperation with consulting partners to benchmark practices, gain third party views and best practice know-how before setting targets. However with all this holistic effort, the facts faced during implementation change the picture when the concept hits reality.

CONTINUAL LEARNING AND IMPROVEMENT

There have been numerous lesson learned. One is that Aeroflot has been most successful when vendors, IT and the business work closely together. Easy to say, but quite hard to put into practice with competing vendors needed to get to the table. Moreover IT and the business speak different languages. Therefore Aeroflot Operations and IT projects are managed by two project managers, one from IT and one from the business, who jointly drive the results towards best practice with the business, IT, consultants and vendors.

The overall success of the project has been driven by the change management capabilities of the project sponsors and the project management parties... think out of the box, allow other views, give thought to other views, challenge views, support the decisions made and communicate results, status and issues.

Concepts are nice but challenges come with detail.

This means that, with the implementation of the OCC and HCC systems, a continuous improvement management process has been started, challenging current solutions as well as identifying future needs.

Change requests are a common feature of major IT implementation projects, but they need to be pushed and managed to achieve the promised savings.

They need a good, close partnership between airline and vendor as well as sophisticated relationship management by both sides to meet expectations.

For Aeroflot it is important not to lose sight of the

The challenge is to keep in mind what is needed to match the big picture, to gain Operations leadership. With the ground based setting, this has been taking into account with the following adaptations targeted amongst others: • Delay code management and reporting beyond IATA standards, which allows department and responsibility analysis; • Standard airport collaborative decision making, TOBT, COBT (calculated off-block time), etc.) by connecting all stakeholders via real-time data integration; • More precise estimated and calculated taxi times.

Today’s state-of-the-art systems are precise with their scheduled and actual times; however, the setting of estimates and calculated times have room for improvement. In the case of taxi times the estimated on block times are based on a single taxi time figure (e.g. inbound taxi time of 15 minutes can only be adapted

by IT database administration) which means that the estimated off block time is determined by a static taxi outbound time, a variable flight time determining the estimated landing time plus a fixed taxi time (always + 10). However experience shows that taxi times vary as much as flight times (time savings could be generated up to 20–50%). Based on these times the new HCC system calculates the passenger connection times and advises if a connection is worth saving, needs action to be saved, or if it needs to be re-booked to another flight because the connection will be missed. Even in Sheremetyevo, with only two runways, taxi times vary according to time of day, different traffic peaks, weather variations or other irregularities. As suggested

by EUROCONTROL and airport collaborative decision making studies, taxi times need to be variable as well as adaptable to allow a more precise evaluation of passenger connections and turnaround management.

It is exactly in the connections and turnarounds where every minute counts. Here the standard tools make airlines lose crucial time. Aeroflot plans to close the taxi gap by time- and distance-dependent taxi time management for each possible distance combination between landing and stand location to gain better

times. This enhancement will be targeted in close cooperation with Sheremetyevo airport to reduce taxi holding times, and to create savings of crew times, fuel and gate allocation.

As with every project, there will be more to come.

cheaper that way.’ What it often boils down to is; ‘We’d better do something because everyone else is.’ And that’s probably true.

We might well come up with great ideas but it will be better if they’re vetted by the whole organization so that an organizational strategy can be developed and executed to bring about the step change that people in airlines have been asking for: it’s also necessary if we are to ensure a successful project. However, whatever you do, don’t automate the status quo. Don’t simply speed up the processes and practices used today or replicate digitally documents whose utility might have been limited by their paper format. Your strategic vision will enable you to take full advantage of the capabilities of a digital solution.

P UNTIL NOW, EFB and e-enablement have been driven by technology and technology providers. To be fair, they have great solutions and equipment that we can use but no longer are we in the days of A or B: Honeywell or Rockwell.

There are many more options available from which to choose, but the flip side of that coin is that it will be a lot more complicated to keep projects moving without a good organizational strategy. For airlines to realize a step change in the business, they’ve got to start to think for themselves, to develop ideas for business process improvements (BPIs). They have to develop a strategic vision and then seek from all that’s available the technology appropriate to delivering that vision. Plus, they must be able to keep the suppliers aligned to support the airline’s vision, whatever that might entail.

Airlines need to find a more cost effective way to support their businesses: we need to ask, ‘how can we distribute our (currently) paper manuals better?’ because we need to get rid of paper. The solution that many will opt for is to get an electronic flight bag (EFB); but how do EFB or e-enablement projects typically get started? It often goes along the lines of…

Figure 3 technology to support that strategy; a foundation on which to build an e-enabled Airline. The sharing of data and information becomes so much more cost effective when the same technology is used across the business to support that ideal. This is where a holistic strategy can be developed, facilitated by professionals, and can produce a common path with everyone moving in the same direction towards the same goals, to adopt technology that will improve the whole business.

We need to ask: will there be a business case if we only develop an EFB strategy for the aircraft or would the business case get more traction if it was a holistic organizational strategy instead? So, ask yourself, what is the vision of your airline and what strategic objectives have you formulated to accomplish that vision for the whole airline? Now you can ask, where does the EFB fit within that Vision?

YES, WE CAN DO IT BUT FOR WHAT PURPOSE?

I was fortunate during the 1990s to know Captain Elrey B Jeppesen, one of the most famous men in and contributors to aviation history. On one occasion, I asked him if he would like to see one of his charts on an electronic display. He didn’t understand what I was saying. So I put two charts on my display: one was a scanned image of a current paper chart, the other was our first rendition of an electronic chart. I showed him the scanned image of a current chart and he said “well look at that, she looks good on a display as well.” I didn’t have the heart to show him the new chart but it showed that we had the means to supply electronic charts.

What we didn’t have was a clear strategy of what airlines wanted, or how we would provide it. But we were lucky, because the airlines didn’t have one either. They just wanted charts on a display because they felt that surely they would be cheaper. There was no strategy, but rather a technology looking for a problem to solve. Instead, it created several problems for which there was no clear strategy for addressing how to deal with them. There was the challenge of distributing electronic media and information and the fact that, for electronic documents there were too many standards that took too long to develop. Likewise, there were no aircraft standards for hardware to utilize electronic data. The business case for (electronic library systems)

ELS/EFB deployment was difficult; after all, if the charts cost the same on paper as they do on a display, where’s the business case? The result was a reactive environment in which everyone was anxious to put a terminal, a display, a laptop on board but did not really have a strong business case to do so. There was a lot more to think about.

Today, a lot has changed; technology (hardware and software) has progressed considerably while standards have been adopted and gone away again to make way for different standards to be adopted.

The personnel in airlines and operators are so much smarter these days about what is available and what could be done; and the aircraft are just so much more data rich now than they were back in the eighties and early nineties.

The cost has reduced but the risk has remained the same for EFB projects; there still needs to be a cost versus risk analysis.

But some things have not changed. There are still failures of many EFB projects in our industry where business processes have not been clearly defined as against automating the status quo. There remains a lack of organizational strategy to support technology deployment.

MEASURED SUCCESS

This was borne out by some amazing statistics from our research at Closed Loop. We discovered that the average rate for project budget overruns stands at 167%, while project failures amount to 92% and only 43% of projects were wholly or partially delivered.

The way to change all of that is to develop a vision and a set of strategic objectives that take a holistic approach for all elements of the business.

Not just flight operations, not just maintenance, not just engineering but the whole of the organization. It’s necessary to have each silo participate in vision and strategy development so that technology is adopted to achieve that vision and strategy, and support the business case created from it.

There can be a business case for one of those silos and it may look OK; but what if you looked at the whole organization, stopped buying things redundantly; does the business case begin to pull together?

HOW TO DO IT

This all may seem an excellent way to proceed but you might reasonably ask, how can we do it? Let’s think about an approach to developing strategic objectives. The first thing we need is to have a Strategic Vision Setting to establish where we’re going and a road map of the route to follow. A SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis can be of use to get things started. Performing a SWOT analysis about what are we good at and what we aren’t good at, as well as what gaps we need to fill in the context of the strategic vision, will help develop strategic objectives. These Objectives coupled with a ConOps will develop

Once you have a successful implementation or while you’re getting that going, think about the ‘hangers on’ or the people who might want to impede the project from other departments. Rather than have that happening during the middle of the process or right at the end, why not include them in at the beginning?

If technology is to help us be more efficient and support BPIs, then we must believe in a requirements-driven philosophy and a systems approach to our projects. We have to look at the big picture but we don’t need to implement that entire big picture at once: we can take baby steps, steps that allow us to have an ROI so that we can go on to the next step. Just make sure all of those steps are pointing in the right direction and that you’re not going to be surprised at the end.

At the end of the day, the process must reveal a ‘Concept of Operations’ (ConOps); being able to clarify how it is done today, what you want it to be like in five years and what you want it to be like at the end of this project so that you have the basis from which to perform a business case analysis. This approach directs the focus away from the software, hardware or particular suppliers and towards the real requirements for the business such as sustainable business process improvements and lower costs.

The result is a zero based audit, an open thinking process that ignores current business practices and considers a Greenfield environment; wiping the slate clean. We need to ask what could happen in an optimized state where content management and data flows get to the right people at the right time. In this scenario, a positive vision is created of how the business can evolve into an optimized state, with content management and data flows producing timely and accurate information and where duplication is eliminated… a truly e-enabled environment.

Illustratively, it is the difference between figure 5 and figure 6.

These two flowcharts illustrate the value of developing a business wide strategic plan, the value of developing a concept of operations. This one illustrated happened to deliver additional value of more than $14.5 million over a five year time frame.

A business case is created that looks at the organization as a whole to eliminate silo focused technology adoption (because there are lots of the ‘silo’ groups in the room, if not all of them) but retains the cost reduction potential of e-enablement technology adoption. So rather than each group buying a content management system or each group taking care of their technology needs separately, they all agree on a common solution. If we want to share information and data across the organization, then we need to have this kind of an approach.

a road map for how to improve the current business: improving the ‘what is’, balanced with what needs to be done to create the ‘what will be’ or the strategic vision.

A holistic strategy and an execution plan are like insurance for the project. How many CFOs would like some assurance about this next project actually coming to fruition? Isn’t it worth spending the time (perhaps two or three months at the beginning of this project) and effort up front to develop the right strategy to help ensure the success of your technology projects and expenditures? This will help in understanding what you want and what you need from a requirements driven approach, before you start spending money and allocating resources on projects like this. Rather than adopting technology that does it ‘their way’, we should be adopting technology that helps us to be more efficient and gives us the tools to help us realize our (BPIs) and our strategic vision.

The mantra has to be, ‘adopt the right technology that brings about step change for your airline, not technology that simply automates the status quo.’

SUMMARY

To achieve a step change, you need to settle your strategy and understand whether it’s just for a single department, or for the whole airline. You need to develop internal partnerships to eliminate silo focused effort and expenditures, and to drive towards successful EFB and e-enablement projects.

You’ll need to have a facilitated strategic event to develop your holistic organizational vision and strategic objectives. This shouldn’t be done by the supplier because then what do you think your strategy’s going to be? And it shouldn’t be done by yourselves because you need to participate and this process needs to be taken seriously. And there has to be a champion at the very highest levels of the organization to ensure attendance, to ensure effort going forward.

Have a ConOps developed to understand the gap between ‘what is’ and the ‘what will be’ of your vision as well as the BPIs implicit in that organizational vision. Don’t let things surprise you; understand what that big picture looks like today and then what it going to take to get to that vision and the BPIs that are going to help fund the project.

Adopt a business case that includes the whole of the airline, or as much as is feasible, and can be easily measured and tracked. Get more people who are accountable, and get more people who are stakeholders in this project, who can utilize the technology and who are part of that e-enablement philosophy within your airline.

Develop an RFP (request for proposal) for your EFB project which is requirements based, is supported by an organizational business case, and fills in the gaps identified by your ConOps and SWOT analysis.

Finally, monitor the effects of implementation against that business case to support this and future projects.

Build credibility in the organization because ‘we did what we said we were going to do, and it cost us what we said it was going to cost and it is paying us returns like we said it was going to do.’

What has made and continues to make Arconics work Niall O’Sullivan, CEO, Arconics

After qualifying in Industrial Design in 1990 from the University sco before returning to of Limerick, Niall worked in an architectural practice in San Franci consultancy business in 1993 which, Dublin, Ireland to work in product design. He set up his own design ement services to large publishers. by 1996, had evolved into an Internet business offering Content Manag to airlines and Arconics‘ first In 2001, he set up Arconics offering Content Management services customer, Ryanair, is still among the firm’s many airline clients.

AIRCRAFTIT: Your name, your job title and the name of the business?

NIALL O’SULLIVAN: Niall O’Sullivan, CEO and Ideas guy, Arconics.

AIRCRAFTIT: How did Arconics get started?

NO’S: Arconics was founded in 2001 with the aim to provide a world class content management system.

One of our first customers was Ryanair and following the success of that installation we decided to focus exclusively on providing solutions to the aviation industry. Thirteen years on and we are still focused on delivering innovative products and service to the aviation industry with focus on EFB (Electronic Flight Bag) and IFE (In-Flight Entertainment), solutions that allow the right information to be sent to the right aircraft/place/device at the right time.

AIRCRAFTIT: What is the attraction of aircraft operations related software and hardware?

NO’S: Airline personnel are on the move everyday and rarely in the office, so are, by nature, mobile workers. The latest mobile technology of smartphones and tablets will fundamentally change the ways in which staff interact with the airline. To manage this interaction efficiently is where Arconics comes in, providing a platform that can map the current process into a more efficient digital one.

AIRCRAFTIT: What is the guiding business principle that drives Arconics?

NO’S: Partnership and collaboration are among our guiding principles. We see our customers as partners and together we create innovative solutions that solve real day-to-day problems in flight operations. As we resolve an issue for one customer the solution is made available to all customers. In effect we have a large collaborative team that consists of leading edge technologists with the best Flight Operations domain expertsi n the world. Now that is a recipe for success.

AIRCRAFTIT: What has been Arconics’ greatest business achievement to date, and why?

NO’S: Issuing 1,800 iPad devices with AeroDocs EFB app to Philippine Airlines and AerLingus pilots: also launching the Wireless Inflight Entertainment solution called Cloudstore last year.

AIRCRAFTIT: What have been Arconics’ disappointments and what have you learned from them?

NO’S: The biggest disappointment has been the slow rate of EFB adoption. We have created innovative technology but customer adoption has been slow.

This has all changed now with new devices such as iPad and smartphones.

THE OPERATIONS LANDSCAPE

A

S THE TITLE suggests, the main thrust of this article will be to offer readers insight to United’s EFB (electronic flight bag) program but it might first be helpful to set the scene by explaining some background material about the airline. This will indicate not only the scale of operation that the system has to support but also the range of aircraft on which the EFB will be installed. The fleet makeup will, in turn, determine the scope of support required of the system.

At the time of writing, United’s fleet stood at…

The size of the fleet reflects the extent and activity of the operation with United Airlines and United Express operating 5,446 flights a day to 370 airports on six continents.

EFB EQUIPAGE

Currently, United uses all three classes of EFB, i.e. there are Class 3 devices installed on seven of the airline’s 74 Boeing 777s and 12 of the 24 Boeing 747s; plus 65 of 65 Boeing 787’s will be delivered equipped with Class 3 EFB’s as the standard configuration. Class 2 devices are mounted in 57 Boeing 757s in the fleet and United is in the process of installing Class 2 devices on 152 Airbus A319/A320 aircraft. Finally, they have distributed Class 1 EFBs – iPad 2 is the tablet choice – to over 12,000 pilots; this is the largest number of Class 1 EFB tablets distributed by any commercial carrier.

Like many airlines, United uses different levels and types of software including…

CLASS 1 EFB The 16GB / Wi-Fi only iPad 2 model with supporting software from AirWatch MDM; Content Locker for the Document Viewer; WSI PilotBrief for weather information; and the plan is to use Jeppesen FD Pro for charts and maps.

CLASS 2 EFB United currently is in the process of installing ‘Mount and Power’ solutions in the A319/320 fleet. These ‘Mount & Power’ solutions include a Tablet Interface Module with Mount and Cradle for ‘Plug-n-Play’ using pilot-carried Class 1 EFB tablets. Once the pilot project is complete, United hopes to roll out to the remaining fleets.

CLASS 3 EFB The B787 fleet will be fitted with Class 3 EFB. There is also Goodrich Class 3 EFB installed in United’s B747 fleet and, for the longer term, Class 3 EFBs are being evaluated for forward fit opportunities only.

CLASS 2 AND 3 APPLICATIONS

There are also different applications to which EFBs of different classes are applied.

Class 3 EFBs in 777 applications are used for charting, AMM (Airport Moving Map) and cabin surveillance.

Class 2 navAero EFBs in the B757 fleet, are again used for charting and AMM with updates being accomplished wirelessly via 3G.

CLASS 1 APPROVALS AND AUTHORIZATIONS

United has received a number of Class 1 EFB operational software approvals from the FAA. They were able to remove paper Flight Manuals (FM), Flight Operations Manuals (FOM), and Worldwide Operations Manuals (WOM) from the flight deck – resulting in a considerable amount of weight and fuel savings.

United’s pilots are able to use their EFBs for FM, FOM, and WOM reference during all phases of flight plus the PilotBrief Optima Weather Application — Cached WX — is also approved. Flight Plans are now available on EFB as well as a tailored Company Communications Application. The system also manages expense reporting.

MANAGING CONTENT

One critical issue with any EFB, and an important part of getting approvals, is to be able to securely and accurately manage the content. AirWatch Secure Content Locker allows: • Secure document distribution and mobile access; • Automated distribution and updating; • Ability to view online or offline; • Data encryption and ability to wipe data from an administrative role.

It also enables strict audit of the content creation, storage and distribution/ transmission process as well as compliance with any applicable standards or regulations and the ability to push information immediately to users.

A further benefit is that it supports all file types and sizes.

DIFFERENT ELEMENTS IN THE SYSTEM

The various components that comprise United’s EFB system have been selected for their valuable features that can contribute to the overall efficacy of the system.

SECURE CONTENT LOCKER As well as enabling the content management capabilities outlined above, Secure Content Locker delivers some valuable features. It includes the flight operations manual (FOM), the company flight manual (FM), the quick reference handbook (QRH), Worldwide Operations Manual (WOM) and Company Communications. There is a hyperlink capability from the table of contents (TOC) and within documents with key word search capability and bookmarking. Document protection is also included with the facility to tab up to five documents. Furthermore, the system remembers the last page viewed when opening manuals and retains a search history.

UPDATE PROCESS Updating can be completed via any WiFi connection.

Documents are ‘pushed’ to EFBs based on fleet aircraft type. There is a prioritizing process so that required flight documents download first and the system will only allow relevant (proper effective date) documents to be accessed. To protect the integrity of the system and for safety, pilots cannot delete documents and there are print, email and sharing restrictions in place.

WSI (WEATHER SERVICES INTERNATIONAL) PILOTBRIEF OPTIMA

This provides a weather overlay to Google Maps and full weather graphics are available with route display and with textual weather cached for offline viewing. There is also a forecast feature showing future weather depiction and the system has the ability to view displays in both landscape and portrait orientations. Additional features include decoded and encoded weather reports as well as route entry by Flight #number.

JEPPESEN MOBILE FD PRO The tailored navigational charting includes company-specific airport charts, e.g., 10-7 pages with worldwide coverage plus tailored procedures. There is an en-route map display with interactive route, airport, airspace and FIR (flight information region) information and the route is displayed over the en-route chart.

FUTURE PLANS

Although it might seem that United’s EFB program is pretty ambitious already, this long-established carrier does not plan to set back on its laurels or simply settle for what is already in place. EFB technology is a game changer and, as well as replacing those awfully heavy and bulky ‘flight bags’ that pilots had to haul around with them and aircraft had to burn fuel to carry, it opens up a whole landscape of additional possibilities to enhance the quality of a pilot’s work life. Here are just a few ideas that that United will be incorporating into future plans.

CLASS 1 TABLET EFB The plan is to continue the content revolution that EFB technology has brought about to remove as much paper as possible from the flight deck; plus, the pilots can also use the devices to accomplish better levels of computer based training (CBT). Furthermore, the devices can be used for flight planning and to deliver real time weather information (WX) on the flight deck.

CLASS 2 TABLET EFB United will plug and play their tablet Class 1 EFB solution (iPad) in their Class 2 EFB solution. They have selected a vendor for the mount and power supply required for FAA approval which provides for a growth path for aircraft interface device (AID) data acquisition. The total solution will enable the airline to deliver an Airport Moving Map and real-time weather information (WX) on the flight deck.

E-ENABLEMENT / CONNECTIVITY

SUPPORT OPTIONS

United has established a range of support channels starting with a 1-800 number specifically for iPad EFB support from an IT Service Desk; plus support is available from the company Pilot Service Center. Pilots can also call the Flight Ops Duty Manager or refer to the internal iPad EFB Webpage.

A loaner program is in place in order to support tablet issues that occur. In short, support is available 24/7 from any hub location plus there are support tools for pilots along with access to Activation Guides and various Do-ItYourself Resource Guides. All of this is backed up by a list of FAQs… with answers!

United plans to eventually update weather and passenger information on the Class 1 and 2 Tablet EFB devices using onboard Wi-Fi. To make everything work, the two powerful facilitators of e-enablement and connectivity have to be present. United is in the process of installing LiveTV Ka-Band satellite broadband onto DirectTV fitted aircraft in the B737 and B757-300 fleets and the Panasonic (PAC) Global Ku-band (GCS) broadband system is being installed on the remainder of domestic and international aircraft… A319/320, B747, B777 and B757-200. B757 aircraft fitted for the P.S. (Premium Service – a luxury transcontinental service) fleet have GoGo. All aircraft will offer internet access via the customer portal which customers may access using any WiFi enabled portable electronic device (PED).

Class 1 and 2 Tablet EFB devices will be updated wirelessly with access to onboard Wi-Fi for weather, passenger updates, etc. United’s B757 equipped with navAero Class 2 EFB will continue to be updated wirelessly through a cellular 3G service while the Class 3 EFB equipped B777 fleet (7 aircraft) will be manually updated via maintenance. The B787 fleet will be wirelessly updated through ADEL (Application Data Enhanced Loading) at equipped airports.

CHALLENGES

Notwithstanding all of the above, readers should not run away with the impression that getting an EFB policy up and running across multiple fleets is an easy job.

SUMMARY

As with any major program, one of the great benefits of going through a process from specification to implementation and use is that a lot of lessons get learned and/or reinforced. The team at United learnt that you have to clearly define what you want the EFB to do and be prepared to adapt processes you already have in place.

Overall, the team at United found that they enjoyed the process and that the business benefits far outweighed whatever effort it cost. Readers will hopefully have found this brief canter through United’s EFB program enlightening and informative for their own plans. n

SOFTWARE STOCKHOLM SYNDROME

In August 1973, a botched attempt to rob a bank in central Stockholm resulted in a hostage situation and a stand-off between armed robbers and the police. After six days, the robbers were subdued and the incident ended without anybody being seriously hurt. Despite enduring an ordeal, which included death threats and physical violence, the hostages claimed they were more frightened by the police and their potential actions than they were of their captors. In fact, some of the hostages went on to keep in contact with one of the robbers and even testified in his defence at his trial. The reaction of the hostages generated quite a lot of academic interest and ultimately resulted in the term ‘Stockholm Syndrome’ being coined to describe the phenomenon where hostages have positive feelings towards their captors.

Despite the seemingly irrational nature of this condition, Stockholm Syndrome is more common than you might imagine. The FBI in the United States estimates that around 8% of hostage victims show evidence of Stockholm Syndrome which is brought about through traumatic bonding or mistaking a lack of abuse for an act of kindness.

“What’s this all got to do with IT?” you may rightfully ask.

Have you ever noticed how some victims of legacy software cling to the vestiges of what made the old system better than the new system? Have you ever found it amazing that legacy software hostages, after years of abuse by a user experience that had no respect for their sanity, are deluded into thinking that they were happier before the replacement system was implemented? If so, then you may have encountered sufferers of Software Stockholm Syndrome.

THE BATTLE FOR NO-MAN’S LAND ON YOUR DEVICE

keeping you and your colleagues flying? I’m not just thinking about the direct cost of you attending the course, but the lost productivity time. That’s not to mention the benefits to be gained by allowing you to learn at your own pace, in an environment and at a time of your choosing. A number of studies have shown eLearning methods to be more effective in terms of knowledge retention and application when compared to more traditional means of instructor led training.

The same innovations and creativity that have been applied to app development are being used in instructional design and development, leading to more imaginative and engaging training content than ever before. With emerging technologies like augmented and virtual reality being prototyped for eLearning, there might even be the chance in the future to spend time in the simulator whilst you’re flying a sector.

Now that would be progress… or at least that’s how I see IT. n

When was the last time you checked how much storage space you had left on your electronic device? How often do you curse at having to delete your favourite episode of Breaking Bad in order to download the latest revision of a manual? Thanks to Moore’s Law applying to memory capacity as well as to processor speed, those days may well be numbered.

There’s a strong chance that your next device might well have enough storage space to allow all of your media and business apps on the same device. If that’s the case and there is some unused storage left over, then some of your smarter business systems guys will be looking for opportunities to claim that ‘no-man’s land’: the unused storage on your device.

My money’s on eLearning and Training apps to fill that space. Think about it: How many days a year do you spend outside of your normal work environment in the classroom? How much money would an airline save by
