EDITOR'S NOTE If I’m being honest, I have a long list of guilty pleasures. I live five minutes from the best coffee shop (arguably in the country), and repeated trips to satisfy my sweet tooth usually top that list. Another? Friends. As in the 90s television show. I own all ten seasons, so all too often I find myself quoting a show that stopped airing almost a decade ago. When putting together this issue full of handmade Valentine’s ideas, I kept remembering a Friends episode. Chandler and Monica agree to make their Valentine’s gifts, but both forget until the last minute. Monica gives Chandler a sock bunny Phoebe made, and Chandler gives Monica a mixed tape, originally a gift from Janice. I sympathize with the Bings. Last Valentine’s Day, my husband and I woke to find our front lawn littered with white paper packages. Puzzled, we tore the paper off of one to find a children’s book, Make Way for Ducklings. Inside, the front cover read, “Dearest Hudson, When I was very small, my grandparents took a trip to Boston and bought me this book...” We opened package after package to discover more than a dozen books dedicated to our unborn babe from friends across the country. At the time, I attributed my tears to the pregnancy hormones, but as I retype this, I can’t blame the hormones. Whether you give old school valentines (use the printables from page 15!) or give a stressed out girlfriend a homemade bath bomb (with printable tag from page 11), I hope you feel inspired to celebrate the people you love this Valentine’s Day. Begin by cutting out hearts. For each heart, you’ll need a front and a back that are each approximately three inches across at their widest point.

Using a needle and thread, carefully sew the remaining unsewn portion. Fold the fabric inward on itself so the edges are hidden, and do your best to make tiny, careful stitches.

Thread your needle with the embroidery thread and string on your hearts. Insert the needle into the upper portion of the heart, being careful that the needle goes directly through the heart and out the other side.

Diana Steffen wears many hats in addition to model: photographer, graphic designer, blogger and actress to name a few. Diana, who actually owns and loves these floral pants, shares a little of her backstory here. Q: How did you get involved in the entertainment industry? A: I have a degree in journalism and during the summer before my senior year in college, I worked two internships in Los Angeles at Extra and NBC. I made great contacts and kept in touch. I moved to Los Angeles after graduation. Q: Where do you see yourself in five years? A: I think I’ll be chasing a child around by then. I hope to master holding a child while blogging and crafting. Q: You’ve had some red carpet experience while working at E! How did that come about? A: I started as a ghost editorial writer for E! Online, attending red carpet events, parties, press tours, and conducting phone interviews. I landed the job, because a freind I met at my first job held the position. It’s true when they say it’s all about who you know, although I’m certain my journalism degree and internship experience helped. Q: First job? A: My first job out of college was a production assistant role at the Sharon Osbourne Show. My time there was short lived as I moved onto working at E! after a few months. Q: Job you’ve loved the most? A: This might sound silly, but I say this all the time. Out of all the roles I’ve ever had, being a wife is my absolute favorite. I get to support my best friend while being paid in constant companionship and adoration.

From the bride: Alex and I married on a calm Saturday evening just as the sun began to set. My parent’s home, a sprawling two and a half acres in Kennewick, Washington set the perfect backdrop. A cherry orchard, pastures and a deep valley surrounded us. The cloud cover provided soft light and relief from the warm sun. An expansive white tent, decorated with white lights, hints of burlap and lace, and a vintage chandelier transformed the backyard into an intimate reception after the ceremony. We wanted the day to reflect our fun personalities with personal touches. Underwood typewriters scattered throughout the venue
reflected Alex’s love of words. I spent hours testing recipes for our sweet treats table. The winners? Homemade jam and fruit tarts. A bridesmaid baked carrot cake topped with carrot strips and singed pineapple. My mom and I washed every chair down the morning of the wedding, and only a father’s love could motivate my dad to dig four giant holes in their newly grassed lawn for our dance floor posts. It was simply overwhelming to hear our guests commit to love, support, and keep us accountable in our marriage, and such a blessing to have so many help in preparation for this day.

They usually come in the form of an envelope with multiple choice options inside that I can choose from depending on my current mood. I dug up the most recent special delivery: 1. Bingo & Cupcakes: Hunt for a local bingo night followed by cupcakes. 2. Flea Market Picnic: A Sunday morning Rose Bowl flea market date where we each get to choose a treasure of our choice followed by a picnic. 3. SARAH HUBBELL: America voted to watch you and Cody wed on national television. How did you feel?
JESSICA HELGESON: Getting married on the Today Show was a completely surreal experience! We are both avid Today Show viewers and were honored just to meet Matt Lauer, Meredith Vieira, Ann Curry and the rest of the crew! It was so fun having America vote on every aspect of our wedding each week and being surprised as our spectacular day unfolded. We never could have dreamed that big! I mean Martha Stewart as our wedding planner!? Come on!
SH: How involved was Martha in the planning of your big day? JH: We met with Martha’s staff weekly. Darcy Miller did much of the planning, but Martha made the final calls. I remember she didn’t like one of the soups for the menu, so it quickly got the axe! Martha actually put my bouquet together, herself, which is so special, and she sat right in the front row for the ceremony.
SH: With such a massive audience, did you miss out on the intimacy of a small affair? JH: We loved that we still had a traditional wedding with 107 of our closest friends and family. Our family pastor married us, and my mom walked me down the aisle; the only thing was the aisle was in the iconic Rockefeller Center, and there were three million people tuned in watching! Somehow, the moment was paused, and we noticed none of the cameras!
SH: Describe the day.
JH: We always talk about a moment after our wedding on the way to the reception. We sat in the stiff leather seats of an old taxi cab, the cute bubbly kind. Moon river crackled through the old speakers. The cab was stuffed to the top with tulle from my wedding dress. As we drove down fifth avenue, strangers lined the streets holding up congratulatory signs. Life seemed to be in slow motion. We will never forget that moment.
SH: What has life looked like since the wedding?
JH: We now have a beautiful sixmonth-old named Caroline who is the center of our world! Cody owns Falling Up Media, a digital marketing and design company, and I get to be a stay-at-home mommy. Sounds of giggles, cries, meows and barks fill our home.
SH: Describe a typical date night.
JH: We love to cook together! Sometimes it’s too hard and expensive to go out! Instead, we often do date nights at home. If we pile up the baby toys in the other room, light a candle, pour a glass of wine, and turn on our favorite music on Spotify, we are transported and have a great time focusing on each other!
SH: Did any other opportunities arrive as a result of the show?
JH: We were sent to the Seychelle Islands for our honeymoon, which is the same place Prince William and Kate went for their honeymoon! In May 2010 Nate Berkus came and decorated our master bedroom to help introduce his new show. It was amazing! EMMAMAG.COM 51

Lana Katsaros is a Southern girl turned New Yorker who writes about her domestic adventures on the blog, Making a House a Home. She may not be much of a carnivore, but pulled pork sandwiches are a Southern staple she could not resist. Lana whipped up this tasty vegan alternative to a classic pulled pork sandwich and shares how to make it.
VEGAN PULLED PORK SANDWICHES SERVES 4 HUNGRY PEOPLE
2 cups ketchup 1 tsp liquid smoke 1 tbsp of molasses pinch of red pepper flakes (or more if you like a kick!)

HOW OUR PATHS CROSSED bike

His dad bought a yellow Schwinn Varsity road bike from a garage sale. Actually, he almost didn't buy it. It was $20 and he only had a ten dollar bill in his pocket. As he walked away, the woman selling it called after him to come back and buy it. He drove a hard bargain. Decades later, he passed this well-worn bike on to his son, Chris, who would take that yellow Schwinn with him to college in Normal, Illinois. One day, Chris forgot to lock up his trusty Schwinn and soon after discovered the coolest ten-dollar bike in history was stolen. Before I was born, my dad also bought a Schwinn. His was a thin, chocolate-colored road bike from Harrison’s Schwinn in Charleston, Illinois. After many good years together, he put the Schwinn out to pasture (the shed) when he purchased a fancy-schmancy new Cannondale. My dad gave me the old bike before I returned to Normal for the fall semester. At this point, the well-loved Schwinn had rusty screws, a squeaky seat, and though I wouldn't admit it, was much too tall for me. After a mere month of school, I forgot to close the garage door one night and woke to find the rusty family heirloom stolen. Upon arriving to campus late and sad that morning, I posted a "lost" ad on Craigslist. This, it should be noted, was very out of character for me, because I had never posted anything on Craigslist before, and I never for a second thought it could help me find it. But because I was bored in the library and because I had already complained on Facebook and played Bubble Spinner for far too long, it was the only thing left to do. When I clicked “post,” I noticed
another lost ad on the local Craigslist, this one titled “Lost! Yellow Schwinn Varsity.” The Normal, Illinois Craigslist showed only three posts total from the last week, and one of them was mine. The post lovingly described the lost bicycle as “rusty” with “bad tires” and “a Peoria Cycle sticker under the seat.” The post's author, Chris, said that while the bike was worth virtually nothing and weighed about 75 pounds and really wasn't that fun to ride, he would pay a hefty reward to the person who stole it. I felt a surprising pang of familiarity and warmth for Craigslist Chris. At the bottom of the post, he left his email. I probably never would have responded if the address was insaneclownposse22@hotmail. com or something like that, but it wasn’t. It was his name and a university email address. After reading the post, I walked into my office and found my friends Jon and Shannon. I told them what had happened. Jon said, “You have to email him!” Shannon said, “This is a Nora Ephron movie, and you’re going to marry him!” I hesitated to email him due to a crippling fear of strangers and also a gut feeling he was probably a freshman in college. Eventually however, Jon and Shannon convinced me to send the "bike guy" (as he had come to be known) a platonic email telling him about the coincidence. I did. He emailed back. It was a very, very good email.
stranger was. Was he the jerk who drinks too much and once drunkenly cut his hand open with a knife, or was he the cute scientist? I crossed my fingers. Jackie sent a text to the mutual friend. He is the scientist! He's a PhD student! He is also a musician! None of this is bad news! Friends don’t usually encourage friends to go out on blind dates with strangers from Craigslist on account of murder and identity theft, but Shannon insisted I ask Chris on a date. A week later, the two of us bought new bikes together. From Craigslist. It turns out, Shannon was kind of right. This wasn’t a Nora Ephron movie, but we did get married. Everything people tell you about weddings is true. It goes by in a blur. There are moments when you feel so full of love you think you will burst. The day after our wedding, we loaded our car up with gifts, wilted flowers and dilapidated-looking centerpieces and drove two hours back to our house. We got take-out and watched TV shows on Netflix all night. Every once in a while, one of us would just stare at the other in disbelief and say "We're married. I met you on Craigslist."
Another friend named Jackie came into the office. After catching her up, Jackie told us she thought she knew the stranger. He was a mutual friend's roommate! But Jackie couldn't remember which roommate the
