Welcome to the Summer 2024 edition of our school magazine. Over the following pages you will get an overview of some of the opportunities our learning community offered and the fun we have had this term which include a wide range of work- related learning and partnership working that contribute so much to pupils’ learning outcomes, independence skills and preparednessfor adultlife.
We hope that you all enjoy the forthcoming holiday and would like to remind you that there will be a staggered intake of pupils at the start of the Autumn term to help us to personally support each of them to adjust and settle in, as our numbers grow. We will open for some pupils at 9.05am on Wednesday 4th September for classes which have Key Stage 3 pupils included, (i.e. Aspire, Endeavour, Discover, Focus, Flair and Fathom). We will then increase the number on site to all pupils at 9.05am on Thursday5thSeptember.

This year’s Futures Week was based on the theme Hospitality and Catering. We started off the week by hosting an Afternoon Tea for parents and visitors to attend. Students worked very hard to prepare sandwiches and scones forover 40guests.
Some students visited local hotels Hillbark Hotel and Thornton Hall. We were able to bake cookies in Wirral Met College, as a taster of their catering course.
Holy Cross church invited us to serve refreshments and perform some signed songs at their Mothers’ Union meeting. Students used the skills they have learned from the weekly Community Café option, to serve customers, deliver drinks and cleanthe kitchen.
Some students visited Pilgrims Meat factory in Bromborough, Autism Together café and Eastham Lodge Golf Club. They particularly enjoyed making mocktails in local pubs Arrowe Park Hotel and Harry Beswicks.
Asda’s Community Champion donated all the ingredients for everyone to make healthy fruity yoghurt pots and some groups cooked with Mr K and Grant, who held a cook off to compare cooking from scratch and readymades.
Students went to Tranmere Rovers Football Club to meet the hospitality manager and a group visited Stedychefs inLiverpool.
On the final day, students faced Mock Interviews, with visiting professionals. Some students put in a great effort to dress appropriately and look the part.
It was an incredible week, made possible only with the support from our Careers Adviser Kath Magnall and the efforts of Meadowside staff. Well done!

Semi-Formal Curriculum
During Summer Term, the learners in Flourish have enjoyed our topic, ThePeopleWho HelpUs .
This topic has worked well with our Futures Week topic, where we have researched ‘Hospitality and Catering’. The class visited eating establishments such as those in New Brighton (Costa, Greggs, etc), Hillbark Hotel and at ArrowePark Hospital.
The children thoroughly enjoyed Futures Week (Careers), learning how towork incatering. Meetingcustomers, servingand cleaningup!
The children have enjoyed designing their own ‘rescue vehicle’, to show how we are helped. The class were able to choose a rescue vehicle, paint, design their wheels and then accessorise it to make it bespoke.
Since our last Magazine update, the children have covered a wide variety of topics in our “My Thinking and Problem Solving lessons”. They have more understanding of Shape, Data handling and the four operations.
Flourish have really enjoyed their PE lessons, where they have developed their throwing, catching, running, jumping and team work skills. Well done Flourish!
The children in Flourish have a lovely friendship mix, working daily in theirtasks, workingcollaborativelyand having fun.
It has been a pleasure teaching the class this year. So from myself, Kate S, Grant, Sarah and Becky, we hope they enjoy their summer, ready fornew excitingchallenges in September!

Hello and welcome to Discover!
We’ve had such a busy and exciting term enjoying so many fun and varied activities. We studied the artist Keith Haring and made our own pictures and clay models inspired by him.
We also enjoyed earning coins whilst learning our times tables using the program Times Tables Rock Stars.
We have gained experience using Bee-Bots to introduce and secure our learning about position and direction.
Pupils have worked cooperatively & extremely hard to solve problems and enhance friendships, being kind & considerate to one another.
I’d like to thank all the pupils for working so hard and also to our wonderful TA’s for helping the learning happen. Have a wonderful summer break,

Although we didn’t win the overall event, we did score the most points in basketball and golf.
They were all a credit to the school. Well done!

After each of our climbing sessions, we usually play football on the astroturf pitch, aswell as tennis, dodgeball, gymnastics and various other games.
In addition, our semi formal learners have also benefited from accessing the soft play area during quieter times.
Furthermore, we have recently been given full access to try out the newly installed ‘Adventure Golf’ facility that the centre opened earlier this summer.
Learners enjoyed playing 18 mini holes in the dark, space-themed room, designed to give players an all round sensory experience, as wellas providing an exciting environment in whichto practice our putting skills!

Crosby Lakeside Residential
InJune, 19pupils from across the school enjoyed a 2 night residential at Crosby Lakeside.During theirstay they enjoyed 2 water sports sessions, where they learnt to row Katakanus and bell boats. To do this, some pupils had to overcome their fear of being ina boat oron the water. We were lucky enough to enjoy fair weatherwhilstwe were away, and pupils particularly enjoyed a dip in the lake, overcoming the cold and mustering the courage to jump in from the jetty!
As well as the water sports, pupils enjoyed trips to the park, walks in the sunshine, playing games and watching football together, and a forest school session. Some were sceptical about the presence ofdragons, even though we found dragons breath in the trees! Older pupils worked independently in the wooded area and I was amused to be handed a 6inch stick to be told ’it’s my work’!
During our stay, pupils enjoyed anart sessionat the beach. Aidan took some superb photographs of Anthony Gormley’s Iron Men statues, whilst others used watercolours, sand and glue.
As we were selfcatering, there were plenty of opportunities for pupils to develop their independent living skills and they did not disappoint. Chef Nadine did a brilliant jobat keeping us all fed and watered, and all pupils contributed to the cooking and/or cleaning at some point during the stay, with Rhys being our chief ofbrews!
I was really impressed by the resilience, communication and flexibility shown by all ofthe pupils who attended the residential. It was absolutely my privilege to spend this time with them and get to know them better.
This exciting experience would have been entirely impossible without the commitment and support of the staff team, who not only gave up their time to come along on the trip, but also worked tirelessly in the run up, preparing menus, resources and helping to pack everything pretty much, including the kitchen sink! Huge thanks to them, Mrs Dunn
More Crosby fun…
