Our Company Who We Are

Our Story

Universal Metro Asian Services (UMAS) has been providing Homecare and Adult Day Care services in the Chicagoland area for over 25 years! Our aim is to serve immigrant populations of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Middle East, Latin America and Europe. For the past three decades we have been at the forefront of meeting the requirements of the South Asian immigrant community and have since evolved to serve all communities. UMAS is an equal opportunity employer.

When Mrs. Santosh Kumar migrated to America in 1985, she was amazed to see how much America had to offer. However, she was shocked to see there were elderly being neglected. Mrs. Kumar knew something had to be done about this. Immigrant families were having a tough time taking care of their elderly. They were working full-time, looking after their children, all while attempting to assimilate to the American culture. There was no outlet for these ethnic populations when it came to homecare. The Homecare industry in Chicagoland was not understanding of the cultural aspects/ needs of the immigrant populations for it to be truly effective. Mrs. Kumar knew she could not see the South Asian elderly in her community suffer the way that they were so she set out on a mission to make a difference in their lives by applying for the Homecare Program from the State of Illinois. She was contracted by the State in 1993 but didn’t stop there. She added Public Benefits, Social Services, Nutrition Programs, Educational & Health Research shortly after that. In 2006, she started Adult Day Care Services to transport seniors that were neglected when their children went to work. Homecare grew to 12 locations and Adult Day Care is currently offered at 6 centers.

Our aim is to ensure that every client ages gracefully with the dignity and the respect they so truly deserve while maintaining their independence in their own home.

Executive Director’s Statement The Year in Review 2019 has been a tremendous year here at UMAS. We opened our second PATEL BROTHERS location in Naperville which expands on our new marketing approach to be in the heart of the communities where our clients and workers reside. Also, I am very proud to announce that we are opening a new location which is currently under construction on Devon Ave. After 20 years, UMAS will be back on the street were it all started in the heart of Little India! This location will be our flagship and one of our largest locations. We expect to open mid-2020.

This year we focused more on our employees. We were a pilot organization for the Illinois Secure Choice program which allows employers to offer a retirement savings plan in the form of a Roth IRA to its employees that were not able to do so before. This is a very important benefit because with this program deductions are taken directly from payroll. Studies have proven that when retirement savings are taken directly from payroll, individuals are more likely to save and at the time of retirement they have a significant amount of savings. I believe this will be beneficial for the financial stability of our employees now and well into the future. I would like to take this opportunity to the accounting staff for all their hard work in making this program a reality for our employees. Another employee-focused initiative we took was to hire dedicated staff for Human Resources for the first time. This resource has been a great addition to our corporate staff and has provided much needed relief to our accounting staff that were performing the HR functions before. Our HR Assistant handles most employee related issues, benefits administration and an on-boarding process. Our Automation Journey, which I will detail further on, describes the efficiencies gained from automating both Homecare Billing and Payroll from EVV data. One thing I am most proud of is our brand-new ADS Web portal which our IT team built, from the ground up. The ADS Portal is custom fitted for our application and is user-friendly, web based and a one-stop solution for our ADS coordinators to monitor attendance, meal tracking and even Billing. I, along with our ADS coordinators cannot express how happy we are with this solution.

Future Forward

The State of Illinois passed a bill to increase the minimum wage to $15/hour by year 2025. This will be an amazing push in the right direction as the State minimum was at $8.25/hour in contrast to the City of Chicago which was at $12/hour. Now the whole State has a plan to move to $15/hour. With increasing of minimum wage, as an organization, we must see

the financial impact of this as well. UMAS has long delivered on its financial commitments to our vendors and most importantly our employees. As a result, we knew it was imperative to speak with Local and State Legislators on the impact increasing the minimum wage would have on the Community Care Program. The Coalition of Limited English Speaking Elderly (CLESE), which UMAS is a member, planned an event where we ‘Marched on Springfield’ and walked door-todoor to speak directly with Legislators and help them better understand the impact this program has on the seniors in their constituencies and request more Illinois Department of Aging (IDOA) funding to increase the Homecare reimbursement rate to make sure vital services don’t stop and Providers aren’t forced to shut down. UMAS and others have made many trips down to Springfield to reiterate this point. All this hard work paid off as the new Illinois budget does see an increase for the IDOA CCP program.

I believe UMAS will grow even more and have a greater impact in the community. It is evident that our consistent growth during difficult times is a direct result of the new strategic initiatives we have implemented. The future is looking bright for UMAS and the elderly population we serve. Again, I would like to thank everyone who has supposed us on this journey. .

2018 Picnic UMAS held its annual company Family Day Picnic on June 30th, 2018 at Busse Woods in Elk Grove Village, IL. It was held in a grand manner to support relationship-building among co-workers which in turn helps in maintaining a positive working environment. This event also provides employees with a great opportunity to introduce their families to the organization. IT Director, Prashant Kumar, and Operations Director, Sagar Kumar took charge of getting everything organized for the picnic and both were on site early the day of the event to warmly welcome employees as they arrived. About 450 employees and their families came out to enjoy a variety of food, drinks and music. There were many fun activities available for the kids and adults. The children enjoyed a magic show that was put on by magician, Joe Bennet. Every child left the show with a balloon animal courtesy of the Mr. Bennet. The adults participated in a friendly yet competitive game of volleyball. There were also many employees that just enjoyed the day mingling and conversing with each other and their families.

Mrs. Kumar welcomed and sincerely thanked employees for their dedicated service and their families for their support as well. With the help of Supervisors, Mrs. Kumar went on to present awards to employees who have been exceptional in the workplace. One of the awards included Homecare Aide (HCA) of the year along with bonuses. She explained how the hard work and dedication of employees helps the company become stronger and better. The awards ceremony was a big morale booster for employees and they expressed their gratitude by cheering when awards were presented. UMAS offers two main services to the elderly population. One is In Homecare Services (IHS) and the other is Adult Day Care Services (ADS). We have 12 office locations around Chicagoland and a 40+ fleet of vehicles that help us provide services to the elderly.

Homecare Program As you get older maintaining your independence and living in your own home can become near impossible as everyday chores become more & more difficult. Our homecare program helps you keep your independence from the privacy & comfort of your own home. We match families with caregivers that share your culture and create a care plan built around your needs. We want you to be able to live in your

home comfortably, for as long as possible, without the burdensome costs of nursing homes and assisted living facilities. With over 2,700 highly-trained staff, we can find the one that will become like family to you. Our caregivers assist with chores around the house including cooking, shopping, personal grooming, and transportation to medical appointments, when necessary.

Your golden years can be a great time! Our adult day care centers provide a venue for the elderly to get involved in structured and fun-filled activities. We provide breakfast, hot lunch and snacks to our participants. Onsite medical monitoring is available by trained nurses. Yoga & fitness sessions, health education and seminars, recreational activities and round trip transportation services from their home to the centers by our experienced drivers are also available free of charge for those who qualify. Come join the party at one of our 6 convenient Chicagoland locations.

Our ADS Coordinators are specially trained to take care of the elderly. We also have a nurse on staff at every location for regular checkups and in case any emergency should arise. A typical day at UMAS begins with the Morning Prayer and exercise to refresh the body and the soul which is followed by a healthy breakfast. Seniors then read newspapers, arts & crafts or solve puzzles based on their interest. A nutritious lunch is served every day at our kitchen which is followed by hearty discussions over any topic of interest. Seniors can either play games or watch television based on their interest. The day ends with evening tea and snacks and everybody parts with a promise to meet the next day. We also provide transportation free of charge as a service.

We provide door to door pick-up and drop-off services in comfortable vans and curb to curb assistance by our drivers for our participants

Statistics

UMAS has shown consistent growth year-over-year and continually finds new ways to be innovative. This year we focused on our accounting department being more proactive which led to vendor standardization and many cost cutting initiatives. As the minimum wage in the City of Chicago and the State continue to rise, UMAS must remain lean to maintain our commitments to our clients, employees and vendors. Employment Opportunities

Fleet Growth

One of the more overlooked services we provide is that of employment opportunities. Over the last 25 years we have trained and educated thousands of employees. For many immigrants, we have been their first experience in the U.S. job market because of cultural and language barriers and many have used the skills learned at UMAS to propel their careers.

As our Adult Day Care Program continues to expand new vehicles to transport seniors need to be added to our fleet regularly. Last year alone, our Drivers logged over 1.075 million miles total! 2018

Our Automation Journey

When conducting 2017-year planning, we realized that we had a tremendous skills gap in Information Technology (IT). We decided that we needed to make this a key focus for our organization to propel us into the future. We started with two main steps: expand the current IT department and add more IT training for staff. To expand the IT department we not only needed to increase headcount but skill-set as well. The skill-sets we needed were hardware, software/coding, and graphic design and with that in mind, we added three additional members to the IT team.

What started off as an idea, took two years to shape into reality and now is the heartbeat of our organization.

In Q1 2017, we created and conducted IT Basics training for the entire staff. This encompassed topics like Outlook, Excel, Printer Basics, and most importantly our Electronic Visit Verification (EVV). Our EVV system is used multiple times a day and is required for State compliance and stores most of our critical data. Following our plan, we changed our employee hiring strategy and made sure that new hires had a basic level of IT understanding. Vigorous

trainings were given for two to three days at the Corporate office before they began their job functions. Once the entire staff was on the same page we started increasing efficiency and productivity by focusing on reducing redundant tasks to minimize errors and improve timemanagement. To put this plan to action, our IT and Executive teams mapped out points of crucial impact with the first one being EVV. The EVV system is the time and attendance tracking software that tracks the hours of services provided by our Homecare Aides to our Clients. We can use this data for Billing the State and Managed Care Organizations (MCO) as well as for Payroll but due to our lack of skills initially, were unable able to do this.

To resolve the inefficient work practice, wastage of time, duplication and inaccuracy of work, 2 goals were set: 1) use EVV to automate Billing and 2) use EVV to automate Payroll. The biggest hurdle to accomplish this was cleaning & maintaining data to ensure only valid data was input into the system. We had to scrub the entire EVV database and ensure everything was accurate. Then we controlled who can change what by user roles. We also started to incentivize good EVV behavior with awards with bonuses. Tasks that used to take our Supervisors, Managers, Billers and Accountants 2-3 days to do, now takes seconds. What started off as an idea, took two years to shape into reality and now is the heartbeat of our organization.

HCA Clock In/Out

HCA Calls into our EVV system to track start and end time which gets logged in our EVV software. These calls have to be reconciled by our Supervisors on a daily basis.

Create VRFP

Previously, each Supervisor created their own excel file that were orphaned from the EVV data. This was highly redundant, time-consuming and error prone. Now, all data in our EVV system is extracted for Billing and Payroll. This saves each Supervisor 2-3 days every month.

Format and Combine Data

Previously, Billing received 26 separate files at the end of every month and merged them into one master file. Now, we clean & format the extracted EVV data in a matter of seconds. This saves our Billing team 1 day every month.

Billing

Previously, Billing had to punch in service hours per client/per day by hand and with roughly 1400+ Clients who get service on an average of 12 days per month and with 2 button-clicks for each punch, that’s 35,000+ button clicks. Now, we simply upload a file with the billing data. This saves our Billing team 2-3 days monthly.

Payroll

Previously, Accounting took 26 separate files at the end of every month and merged them into one master file. They then had to sum hours per worker and enter that into our Payroll system. This was roughly 5000+ button clicks. Now, we simply upload a file with the payroll data. This saved our Accounting team 2-3 days every month.

We are extremely delighted to announce the Grand opening of another new location in Naperville. The new location opened on Tuesday, March 26, 2019 and is located inside the Patel Brothers store located at 1568 Ogden Ave, Suite 144, Naperville, IL 60540. It was undoubtedly a celebration of the collaborative efforts of MAFS/UMAS/MHHC in serving the community for the last 26 years. This location will be a resource center to fulfill the needs of senior citizens to provide guidance regarding their eligible benefits. It will also serve as a homecare services office and training facility for new homecare aides. The opening ceremony commenced with an invocation to our Hindu Lord Ganesh performed by Pujari Jagdishbhai Joshi. Our key office staff assembled in a professional and well decorated office. Mrs. Santosh Kumar, Executive Director along with Harish Kolasani, our Vice President, Mrs. Sumitra Patel Board Member, Nikunj Baxi Board Member, Sagar Kumar - Treasurer, Program Director Awilda Gonzalez, our managers Prem Jalota, Promila Mehta, Jahnavi Bavisi, Neelam Desai, Bhavna Patel, Shrenik Dalal, and other staff members welcomed our chief guests as they arrived. Mayor Steve Chirico, Councilwoman Patty Gustin, Schaumburg Township Trustee Nimish Jani, Consul General of India Neeta Bhushan, Krishna Bansal Chairman Indian Community Outreach, Raj Patel of Patel Brothers as well as prominent Naperville residents Ashfaq Hussain,

Vasavi Chakka, Natasha Grover and Ratna Kapur attended our ribbon cutting event. Our chief guests Mayor Steve Chirico and Consul General Neeta Bhushan performed the ribbon cutting ceremony. The ceremony was blessed by Swami Mukundananda of Bharat Sevashram Sangha, Aurora, who chanted the ancient mantra of Vedas before the ribbon cutting. All managers, key staff personnel, several Adult Day Care Seniors arrived with utmost passion to witness the opening ceremony. A cake cutting ceremony by our honored guests was followed by an abundant spread of scrumptious and healthy lunch, prepared in our own Naperville, Niles and Chicago kitchens. The seniors enjoyed a sitdown lunch along with the chief guests, and the board of directors. Flower bouquets were presented to all our honored guests.

Branch Manager Shrenik Dalal is the manager of our Chicago location since 2017. Shrenik was born and raised in Gujarat, India. He migrated to the US in 1980. He has a bachelor’s degree in Commerce and Business from India. He joined Wyeth Pharmaceuticals in 1981 and worked there for 22 years. He also worked in the real estate industry for 12 years. His experience, ethics and organizational skills are an asset to our company. He is involved in managing various MAFS and UMAS programs in Chicago along with implementing all office procedures to ensure smooth operation in our busy work environment. His hands-on experience and vision help him to be the successful person he is today. His goal is to bring joy and happiness in every senior participant at the Universal Metro. He is happy and proud of his father who has been a content participant of UMAS!

Branch Manager Jahnavi Bavisi is a Manager at Universal Metro Asian Services and has been working with UMAS since 2004. Prior to working with UMAS she worked at College of DuPage as a Staff Service Supervisor. She started with UMAS as a computer teacher and prior to becoming a Manager she worked as a CCP Supervisor for several years. She is responsible for all office procedures, and uses her organizational skills to ensure smooth operations in a busy work environment. Her consistent and committed work ethic have contributed to her success at UMAS for the past 14 years. Jahnavi has created the best team under her exceptional training and supervision. Born and educated in Mumbai, India. She did her graduation in commerce from the Kandivali Education Society in 2001. Ms. Bavisi has a vision inspiring other to support her synchronizing with the uppermost management goals. She sees her parents image in every senior and it gives her joy to serve them.

Branch Manager Neelam started at our Lombard location in 2010 as a CCP Supervisor and has risen to this position because of her strong potential. She manages 2 locations and is responsible for the daily activities of each department and ensures that all of them work to the best of their abilities. Neelam was born and educated in Mumbai, India. She graduated as an Interior Designer from SNDT University in 1987. Providing services to the senior citizens through her job at UMAS and receiving their thanks gives her peace and joy and she comes to work every morning with a smile on her face.

Executive Director Mrs. Santosh Kumar is counselor, attorney, professor, community leader and business woman. She is popularly known as “Mother Teresa” of Chicago. Mrs. Kumar completed her Bachelor of Science in 1969, Bachelor of Law in 1972 and Master’s in Law from AMU in 1974. At the age of 22, Mrs. Kumar became an attorney. She was professor of Law for 11 years of Law in Jaipur University and finally migrated to the United States in 1985. She earned her Law Graduate degree from the US in 1989 and a Computer Desktop Publishing degree in the year 1992. She is founder and Executive Director of Metropolitan Asian Family Services (MAFS) and Universal Metro Asian Services (UMAS), both working for the wellbeing of the Indian community. Years ago, she set out on a journey to make a difference in the world face by face and what she initiated with a small group of people and a few resources, is now one of the biggest Social Service organization with 12 facilities for seniors with a full spectrum of services with a pool of hard-working individuals helping the community. Mrs. Kumar’s versatility and her restless efforts to wipe out social injustice from the community were recognized by various national & international institutions. Niles Township honored her Leadership & Excellence in serving seniors, the needy and the disable. She was recognized as “Top Woman of Chicago” by US Congressman Danny Davis, 7th Congressional District on International Women Day of 2016 for her Outstanding Leadership. The Pillar of Service Award (2009) was given at the Governor’s conference by Charles Johnson, Director of IDOA for Outstanding Leadership & Advocacy on behalf of Ethnic Older Adults by CLESE. She was honored with the “Jewel of Rajasthan” award for her pioneering work in serving, leading and enhancing lives of needy people in Chicago, US. Recently, she was given the “Exemplary Community Service” award for her outstanding and dedicated service to the general welfare of the Asian American community in the State of Illinois by Asian American Coalition of Chicago.

To Dance or not to Dance

Shakuntala Mehta and her husband came to the United States of America in 1989 to help their children and take care of their grandchildren. She is 83 years young and has been our ADS client since August 2014. .

SCHAUMBURG

At first, Mrs. Mehta and her husband were very busy as they lived with their children and grandchildren. As the grandchildren grew older, they became more independent and slowly drifted away. Days went by, then tragedy struck, and Ms. Mehta’s husband passed away. This made her extremely sad, lonely and she fell into depression. She was beginning to feel that her life was going to come to an end. She felt as if she had nothing live for. Realizing how lonely she was her daughter suggested that she join Universal Metro Asian Services Adult Daycare (ADS) program. Heeding her advise she decided to join UMAS. She was at first, very skeptical and came in only for one day. She enjoyed the environment UMAS provided so much that she wanted to spend more time here. It wasn’t long before she started to participate in all ADS activities. She began to feel revived and happy. Her involvement in Yoga gave her lot of peace and contentment. She also attended all health awareness and Adult

Literacy classes which UMAS provides to all senior participants. UMAS also arranges for spiritual leaders to come and give speeches to our seniors. She keeps herself busy by involving herself in arts and crafts classes. She goes on almost all field trips conducted by UMAS which are specially catered for seniors. Her most loved event at UMAS she explained with one word, “DANCE”. She joins every dance performance the seniors host at UMAS. She is so proud of herself now and cannot believe that she is one of the best dancers in UMAS. She is so overjoyed now that she feels that she has traveled back in time to her college days in which she was a dancer. She mentions she is so happy and is surprised that at the age of 83, she can still dance at every event. She is very grateful to staff members for all their encouragement and the opportunity they provided her. From falling into depression to being excited for the next ADS event, this is truly a miracle. In her own words, “I am very happy to have found this center, Universal Metro Asian Services. I don’t know what my life would have been without UMAS. I am looking forward to coming to the center every day. All the activities here have helped me to lead a happy and healthy life now and I am far from depression.” ­‑Shakuntala Mehta

Always by my Side NAPERVILLE

Mrs. Carmen Nuñez is a Homecare client in the Chicagoland area. She has been a client since 2014. She had an unforeseen accident and major spine injury due to a door that fell on her and she was paralyzed from the waist down. According to the doctors, Carmen had a very slim chance of survival. At this time, Carmen’s loving family needed help. That is the reason they reached out to UMAS and we matched her with a Homecare Aide, Sara Lopez. The first thing Sara did was to help Carmen keep her doctor’s appointments. This was a major step in the improvement of her health. Sara also helped Carmen with her bill payments and other public aid appointments. The times that Carmen needed to be hospitalized Sara was always there to call the ambulance and/or take her to the hospital. Gradually, Carmen’s health started improving with Sara right

by her side. Carmen started doing her own grooming and could lift her arm and comb her hair. This independence milestone gave her much happiness that she thanked Sara countless times. Once bed bound, Carmen, with Sara’s help was able to transfer from her bed to her wheelchair. This helped her move around to heat food by herself which Sara prepared for her. According to Carmen she is very fortunate to have Sara Lopez by her side during the toughest period of her life. Carmen had been living with her family since the accident. Now with the improvement in her health, she is confident to move out and regain her independence. Carmen feels very indebted to Universal Metro Asian Services for being one of the major reasons for her health improvement.

The Road to Recovery

Mr. Fredy D’Mello, our ADS Client, suffered an epileptic fit, and had to be rushed to the hospital, where he was placed in the ICU, on August 26th, 2016, at around 3:00 am. He went into a coma for two and a half days.

VERNON HILLS

Mr. D’Mello is one our ADS clients since 2016. While in the hospital, our ADS participants from Vernon Hills visited him and he was so happy to see them that he smiled for the first time since he was admitted. He missed Adult Daycare and missed everyone from our center. Mr. D’Mello was moved from the ICU to the regular ward and spent 10 days there. He was later transferred to a Nursing Home. He missed ADS, and was very unhappy with being in the Nursing Home. Throughout his stay in the Nursing Home, our ADS clients kept visiting him to make sure his siprits were high as all of them wished for ‘Fredy’ to come back to the center. They made him aware that he was very much missed at our ADS location and wanted him to get well soon. Fredy was eventually moved to a Rehabilitation Center in Highland Park, where he suffered yet another Epileptic Fit, but Fredy’s resolve never wavered. Our senior participants again

visited him with great anticipation of his quick recovery. Fredy enjoyed the visitation of his senior colleagues. Fredy recovered gradually over the next few months. He missed the UMAS center since he was away for ten long months. He could not wait to go back to the center. On June 29th, 2017, he rejoined his senior participant friends. The doctors who treated Fredy were surprised that he had made such quick recovery at home and said that Fredy was given a second chance in life… “begin each new day as if it is the beginning of your life, for it truly is the beginning of what is left of your life”.
