FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK

In the above Psalm we clearly see how King David regarded prayer as a lifeline. At MAF, we also see it as a lifeline.

There is a mystery to prayer. I don’t understand how it works, but I know that our sovereign God tells us in the Bible to lift our voices and bring our requests to Him.

We know it’s more than coming to Him with a list of needs. In Jesus’ model prayer for us, He demonstrated how we are to also praise Him for what He has done in our lives, ask forgiveness, and submit to His will.

I saw firsthand how the Lord answered those who prayed for me and my family when we served in Indonesia—times when we experienced protection, grace, and encouragement in the face of daunting circumstances.

I have also seen God answer prayer on behalf of MAF’s worldwide ministry. Every time a new staff member joins our work it’s a tangible answer to prayer. When the financial needs of the ministry are met, we see God answering our prayers. When MAF families continue to faithfully serve in the face of great hardship they are realizing answered prayers.

In this edition of FlightWatch, you will read of some phenomenal answers to prayer. In Haiti, people in a drought-stricken area saw God answer their desperate pleas for rain in an amazing way. There’s a story about “Miss Joyce Lin,” the newest plane in MAF’s fleet in Papua, which was dedicated to the Lord and is already being used to bring help, hope, and healing to isolated communities. And the “Prayer at Work” feature has many more examples of how God has answered the prayers that so many of you have offered on MAF’s behalf. Praise the Lord!

Thank you for your partnership in the ministry of MAF, including your life-changing prayers.

Serving together,

and CEO

“Answer me when I call to you, my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer.”

A Kodiak Named PK-MJL

How MAF pilot Joyce

COMMISSIONED

Lin’s legacy lives on

On July 15, 2022, something happened to transcend tragedy.

More than two years earlier, an MAF Kodiak aircraft, along with its pilot, Joyce Lin, had crashed into Lake Sentani in Papua, Indonesia. No one can know why God, in His loving and perfect plan, allowed such a catastrophe. For MAF and all who knew Joyce, the fatal accident remains a heartbreak and a mystery.

On July 15, PK-MJL—the Kodiak replacement aircraft affectionately nicknamed “Miss Joyce Lin”—was commissioned for service in Sentani. As MAF staff formed a prayerful circle around the Kodiak, they knew the event’s significance extended far beyond the airplane itself. It extended to them.

Joyce was clear-eyed in her purpose with MAF. She said, “While I will always be excited to fly planes and work on computers, I am most excited to share the love of Jesus Christ by helping to transform other people’s discouragement and mourning into dancing and joy.”

Through PK-MJL, her legacy of love will continue.

READY FOR SERVICE!

PK-MJL’s journey to Papua began with generous funding from MAF partners who shared Joyce’s vision and wanted to carry it further. Once purchased, the Kodiak spent two years at MAF’s headquarters in Nampa, Idaho, getting retrofitted for the field and waiting for import permissions. It was then ferried to Sentani where it cleared customs in record time! The airplane was then prepped with its new PK-MJL registration and some small modifications and stood ready to join the MAF Papua fleet.

First Flights

PK-MJL’s first two passenger flights, conducted on July 18 by MAF pilots Dave Ringenberg and Tom Bolser, carried MAF missionary kids (MKs). Linda Ringenberg, Dave’s wife, said, “We hope that being the first passengers in this plane will inspire them to live a life that’s sold out for God like Joyce did.”

The next day, PK-MJL flew its first mission flight. This flight, and the ones in the weeks that followed, represented a beautiful cross section of the many ways this tool will be used to carry on Joyce’s legacy.

EYES TO SEE

MAF.ORG 6

A macro view of how God is working wonders and overcoming darkness in Haiti

The prophet Elisha’s servant woke early, went outside, and saw an army of horses and chariots surrounding the city. He cried out to Elisha, “This is hopeless, my master!”

Over two millennia later and more than 6,000 miles away, the people of Haiti feel the same despair.

Gasoline $50 a gallon. A hamburger for $20. An economy paralyzed. Gangs blocking the seaports and the main fuel terminal—no more fuel shipments or food coming in. Hospitals, banks, and stores closing or rationing power. Violent protests. Reports of cholera.

The situation in Haiti is dire.

But, just as God opened the servant’s eyes to see the horses and chariots of fire He had sent to protect them, so God has given MAF and its partners incredible glimpses of the work He has been doing in Haiti.

Zoom out with me, and let’s take a look.

Jehovah-Jireh*

In April 2022, an MAF Caravan carried a group to Anse Rouge, Haiti, a dry, drought-stricken valley sometimes referred to as Platon Gran Dyab (the Devil’s Plateau). On board was a former MAF Haiti pilot, Jason Krul, who now serves with Hungry for Life International (HFL). He was traveling with a group of donors on a vision trip of sorts to check in on compassion development projects they’d been supporting. It had been two years since they’d been able to visit Haiti, due to COVID and increasing instability within the country.

“I booked these flights quite a long ways in advance because the whole trip hinged on whether I could get an airplane or not,” Jason said. “Being able to rely on a ministry like MAF … that reliability, dependability, but also knowing and trusting the pilots are trained, the airplanes are maintained to a standard … We wouldn’t have done the trip if we didn’t have MAF flights.”

The group was visiting Lemuel Ministries, whose focus is on combatting poverty through holistic development—land and water reclamation, micro business, Christian education, and discipleship training. HFL supports a good portion of Lemuel’s kindergarten and elementary school, and a key donor was among the HFL visitors.

It was Easter weekend. Every week the church in Anse Rouge prays for rain. It had been six months since they’d had any, and their watering holes were completely empty. Crops were dying, wells were going dry. During the community’s Easter service, the people prayed fervently.

“We jumped and ran because we were across where the water would come,” Jason said. “We were able to stand up on a hill and watch water rushing through these canals and filling up massive watering pools. That will provide water for six to eight months again.”

A few minutes later, Jason and his team were talking to Manis and Judy Dilus, the couple behind Lemuel Ministries. Judy commented that the only thing that could possibly be better would be for it to actually rain there, in the valley.

The words were barely out of her mouth when the skies opened up and it started pouring; it rained all night.

These remarkable gifts of water amazed the visitors. “We were genuinely impacted by God’s provision and just the timing of us being there to be able to experience that,” Jason said.

Jehovah-Nissi†

After lunch, Jason and the HFL team went to tour the micro development project they support. There was a dark, ominous cloud over the mountains, which is common—it rains there but not in the valley. Suddenly the group heard people yelling from the top of the mountain. It had rained so much up there that water was gushing down through natural ravines, following its natural course to the ocean.

Lemuel and community members had built canals to divert water from the ravines to several collection ponds.

After the HFL team had spent a few days with Lemuel Ministries, MAF picked up the group and flew them from the driest part of the country to the lushest.

To go from Anse Rouge to Jeremie is almost the longest distance you can go across Haiti. But with MAF, it’s just a short flight between the two.

“And when you take the plane, you see it immediately: The ministries working there are all different, but they all have the same goal,” Jason added. “It’s an awesome part about partnering with

different ministries, like MAF does as well, being able to see the variety of ministry happening.”

Jason had done that flight to Jeremie many times in his former MAF pilot role to serve another longtime MAF partner, and friend, Mark Stockeland, founder of Haiti Bible Mission (HBM).

While in Jeremie, the HFL team saw vivid examples of how God was transforming lives. The group was in a meeting with Mark and some of HBM’s pastors and leaders, when a “prodigal son” returned.

The young man had been part of HBM’s leadership program for 10 years; they’d helped him start a business. Then he began hanging out with the wrong people, squandered everything, and abandoned HBM for a year.

During the meeting, he came knocking on the gate, tearfully begging Mark and his team to take him back and asking for forgiveness. Mark then read the story of the prodigal, and—as he later described it—“we cried and loved on him! Welcomed him back to our family.”

The HFL group met another young man who’d been helped by Mark’s mission. Houston had been demon possessed and so violent that his family had to chain him to the ground. Mark and his team had prayed over him, and the next day he’d begun to improve. Several days later, Houston had asked for Mark’s team to come and pray for him again so he could ask Jesus into his heart.

“He’s been helping lead a discipleship group and getting involved in the church we helped build,” Mark said.

Jason and the HFL donors had been supporting the new church plant in Houston’s area, and they were excited to meet Houston.

“The guy is 100 percent normal—complete transformation!” Jason said. “To see a guy that’s gone from complete demon possessed to being on fire for this new church … You just go, wow, God is still working and moving in these communities.”

Arms lifted

It’s not often that donors get to visit the projects they’ve funded and see the impact of their giving and how lives are being changed. These trips allow them to come alongside the ministries they support, learn what their needs are, and be an encouraging presence.

Mark Stockeland said, “It’s always a blessing to have teams come and help serve. But it’s even better when it’s a close friend like Jason, who comes and encourages us and helps lift our arms. He knows what it’s like on the mission field, so he gets what we deal with on a daily basis.”

Jason and his team had the unique opportunity to see firsthand how Lemuel Ministries and HBM are striving to meet the needs of the Haitian people while sharing the life-changing love of Christ. Your support for MAF carried them safely to the right place at the right time, so God could show them the wondrous works He was doing.

May you be encouraged by these reports and have eyes to see the “chariots of fire”—God’s provision and protection—in your own life.

See “Prayer at Work” on page 12 to learn how the MAF Haiti team was affected by the unrest at the time of this writing.

MINISTRY SPOTLIGHT

MAURICIO AND ROSALIA SANCHEZ

Mauricio and Rosalia Sanchez, long-time missionaries with MAF, have accepted a new role. Now serving as MAF’s Latin America regional director, Mauricio will provide leadership to the MAF program in Haiti, and MAF’s affiliates in Guatemala, Suriname, Ecuador, Mexico, and Brazil.

With both Mauricio and Rosalia coming from South America, they make a great team to lead the region. But neither one knew about God’s plan for their life until they were young adults.

When Mauricio was eight, his father left the family when they were living in Bogota, Colombia. His mother became a Christian and taught him about God and His love. However, Mauricio said, “I didn’t have a personal relationship with God. My life was empty without any particular purpose.”

At the invitation of his older brother, Mauricio attended a Christian camp meeting when he was 19, which had a profound effect on him. “The Lord changed me that night,” he said. “The next day I saw everything was different … a sudden, powerful joy was just overwhelming me.”

At age 21 Mauricio moved to Caracas, Venezuela, where he earned his private and commercial pilot’s licenses. He also completed a master’s degree in business administration with the University of the People in Pasadena, California, and finished his Bible training with Campus Crusade for Christ, now known as Cru. While serving as national director of the “JESUS” film project in Venezuela, he became

aware of the importance of missions.

Rosalia Sanchez was born in Caracas, Venezuela, and was studying at a local university when a classmate invited her to watch the “JESUS” film. “I made a decision for Christ that day,” she said. That spurred her to help with the “JESUS” film project, where God impressed upon her heart the need to serve in missions.

Rosalia earned a bachelor’s degree in special education and a master’s in education technology. It was at a youth camp in Caracas where she met Mauricio and realized their common passion for serving the Lord in missions.

After they were married, Mauricio spent three years as pastor of a church in Caracas before joining MAF to use his knowledge in aviation and administration. For the next seven years, they served the isolated people in the remote jungles of Venezuela.

In 2007, Mauricio and Rosalia, with their three children, relocated to Costa Rica to develop an MAF ministry called Learning Technologies to help prepare and train pastors. Now, the couple has come full circle, returning to the flight side of MAF.

God has prepared them well to serve this region. Mauricio and Rosalia are in need of partners to pray for them and support their ministry financially. Will you please consider joining their team as they reach people in Latin America for Christ?

PRAYER AT WORK

MAF is grateful for your partnership in this Great Commission work. Your support throughout 2022 made possible thousands of flights to serve isolated people. And your prayers covered our staff and this ministry. Thank you! Read on to see how God answered.

FlightWatch, November 2021

Remember our foreign staff who are receiving training in the U.S.

Answer: In August of 2022, MAF staff Mantlibi Mafa of Lesotho, Juan Antonio Rivera of Mexico, and Zacharie François of Haiti, completed their training at the School of Missionary Aviation Technology (SMAT). MAF president and CEO David Holsten gave the commencement speech at SMAT’s graduation ceremony.

FlightWatch, May 2022

Would you join us in prayer for Haiti? Pray for the protection of our staff, the ministry of MAF, and the growth of the Haitian church.

Answer: In October, amidst considerable unrest, MAF staff spouses and children were evacuated out of Haiti, while pilots, mechanics, and other support staff are working on a rotation basis, keeping flight operations going, and taking periodic breaks to be with their families.

FlightWatch, January 2022

Pray that the MAF documentary, Ends of the Earth, will be widely viewed and have an impact on those who watch it.

Answer: A 10-year-old girl saw the movie and was inspired to become a missionary when she grows up. She shared this with her fourth grade class during Career Day.

MAF Prayer Connection, May 21, 2022

Pray for the transportation of a container from the USA to Mozambique. This shipment contains needed equipment for the base and household items for a newly arrived MAF family. Due to many unforeseen delays, it might arrive outside of the six-month window for importing personal goods duty free.

Answer: The container arrived on July 27 and with essentially no damage. An exoneration on the duty for the personal effects of the Koher and Brumley families was granted, even though it was almost two months past the window. The Mozambique program now has a flight simulator set up, a generator for the housing facility, and an extra container in which to store items.

FlightWatch, May 2022

Pray for the Lord’s healing touch on patients who have been flown by MAF recently, and that He will touch their hearts as well.

Answer: “It’s always a joy to fly one of our medevac patients back home. Today we flew Pak Yusuf and his wife home to Mahak Baru after they stayed at our hospital house for nearly a month. We picked him up in Mahak Baru on June 22 after an accident that left two of his co-workers dead and Pak Yusuf badly injured. And very grateful that Pak Bob was also on the flight today, as he had faithfully served Pak Yusuf and his wife as pastor and friend the whole time they were at our hospital house.”—

MAF Prayer Connection, July 28, 2002

MAF Liberia is moving their flight operations and maintenance facility to an MAF-US FAA Part 135 certification. Please pray that the transition will go smoothly and without major disruptions to their flight operations.

Answer: The collaboration with MAF-US and MAF-International in Liberia is proceeding close to schedule. Two pilots from the Liberia program and two aircraft will be added to the U.S. operating certificate. The pilots have almost completed the necessary requirements, and the first aircraft will soon be ferried to Liberia, with plans in place for the second aircraft to follow in the spring.

MAF Prayer Connection, June 16, 2022

Pray for general discipleship training that will be held June 18-19 in Lebakeng, Lesotho. Pray for the new outreach that will be established as a result of this training.

Answer: The three-day discipleship training was held in Lebakeng, with 29 people attending. Ntate Metsing Moholane, director of Scripture Union, was the training facilitator, and was transported to and from Lebakeng by MAF. Some of the trainees participated in a follow-up outreach and experienced evangelism for the first time. The program’s organizers praise God for both current and future impact of the training.

MAF Prayer Connection, May 27, 2022

Lift up Chad and Jamie Dimon, a pilot/mechanic family serving in Lesotho, Africa. Pray for the Dimons to adjust to Lesotho culture well. Pray particularly for God’s gracious solution to the loud music from a bar near their home that disturbs their sleep until 4 a.m.

Answer: After months of trying to mitigate the noise, it became obvious that moving was the best option. The Dimons reported, “Finding a house to rent in Maseru is not easy. Thankfully the Lord provided a home, so we packed and moved on July 16. Almost as if to bid us farewell, the club gave us one last really loud night before our move. What a blessing it was the next evening to go to bed and not hear a thing! We praise the Lord that we are now away from the noise pollution so that Chad can get the rest he needs to fly safely.”

MAF Prayer Connection, August 2, 2022

Please pray that MAF in Southeast Asia will have favor with government representatives and other implementation partners at an upcoming ceremony to review their Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) progress report.

Answer: An encouraging meeting took place recently with a key government partner, who was extremely positive and made multiple references to the MOU ceremony and how pleased he was with the report of the work being accomplished and the partnership with MAF. He also expressed willingness to advocate on MAF’s behalf with high-ranking government officials.

FlightWatch, August 2022

Pray for God’s guidance and favor in South Central Asia as MAF seeks to reopen the program there.

Answer: September 2022 was the South Central Asia program’s second month of operations since their return. Favorable relationships with the new government enabled MAF to continue to serve and meet urgent needs. They provided critical support to NGO/humanitarian agencies serving in remote areas. Our pilots flew over 120 hours and carried 326 passengers and 6,626 kilograms of cargo.

One of our partners had this to say: “We’re so glad your planes and people are back! We heard they were coming. That will help others return … especially families.”

MAF Prayer Connection, August 29, 2022

Pray for a believer from Matsaile, Lesotho, who is eight months pregnant and is experiencing some serious health problems. Pray for her healing and a safe delivery. The medical team is puzzled over her illness.

Answer: MAF Lesotho staff report that Maseamoha gave birth to a healthy baby boy and is doing well, praising God for this wonderful outcome.

MAF Prayer Connection, August 30, 2022

Please pray for the MAF avionics team from Nampa headquarters as they travel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo to install needed avionics in MAF aircraft. May they make all their connections, untangle all their installation wiring, and ensure clear radio reception.

Answer: Avionics supervisor Bruce Harcey and mechanic Matthew Carter traveled to Kinshasa in August and were able to complete the biennial inspections and re-certification of the altimeters and transponders of all four airplanes there. They were also able to update software on the avionics equipment in the Cessna Caravans and made preparations for a major avionics upgrade on the Cessna 206. The trip was especially beneficial for Matthew, as he is training to be an avionics specialist and got needed hands-on field experience.

PRAYER REQUESTS

• Pray for stamina and wisdom for the pastoral couple who does outreach every morning at the clinic in Kuebunyane, Lesotho.

• Ask the Lord to smooth the way for the new MAF flight program in Guinea. In recent months they have experienced challenges with staffing and flight permissions. Pray for a full-time pilot family to serve in Guinea.

• Please continue to lift up the Haitian people who are struggling on so many fronts. Pray also for the MAF families who are separated, and for our staff and ministry partners that remain in the country. Ask God for His peace to fall on Haiti.

• The harvest is plentiful! Ask the Lord to raise up more MAF staff members to serve overseas and in the U.S.

STUDYING THE HONEYGUIDE

The Ambassador Aviation team (MAF in Mozambique) flew a group of researchers from Nampula to the Niassa Game Reserve. “They were studying the mutualism that exists between honeyguides (a species of bird) and honey hunters (the people the birds guide to the honey),” said MAF president and CEO David Holsten, who was visiting the program and flew with pilot Dave Holmes and the group. “Communities depend on the honey for calories and income. The researchers were grateful for the ability to fly into the park rather than taking a long and possibly dangerous trip overland.” —Photo courtesy of David Holsten.

THE BIBLE REACHES MORE HEARTS

In Indonesia, progress was made in the area of Bible translations. In Papua, the Una Bible was dedicated. This is the seventh complete Bible out of 250-plus languages in Papua. MAF flights have served the Una people in Langda, and the translation team, since the 1970s.

In Kalimantan, MAF staff flew to Malinau to celebrate with the Kartidaya translation team the dedication of the Gospel of Luke in five different languages: Punan, Lundayeh, Kenya Lepo’ke, Bulusu, and Agabag. It was a four-year journey to get to this point. “Even though we did not plant the seeds of this project, we did help ‘water’ and advance the process with transportation logistics and other needs,” said Tyler Schmidt, MAF Kalimantan program director. —Photo by Luke Sjoblom, YAJASI

STUCK AT THE BORDER

In eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) recently, chief pilot David Petersen received a spontaneous request in the middle of his flight day. David said, “I was approached by some men from Genesis Waters. They said the airlines had canceled all their flights and wondered if MAF could help them as they were now stuck at the border after flying all the way from the USA. I took them 310 miles into the forest along with their 100 water filtration kits and 150 solar-powered audio Bibles in French and Lingala languages. They spent the next week going to many different villages using the gift of water filtration as an open door to present the spiritual water of the gospel.” —Photo by Ken Watkins
