Ministry Highlight MAF pilot Tim Chase and his wife, Karen, are in Lubumbashi where MAF is completing many flights to combat a measles epidemic. Karen writes, “Malemba is a 1.5-hour MAF flight or a two-day overland trip that includes horrendous roads, barricades by corrupt traffic police demanding exorbitant bribes, and a risky river crossing on a battered, single-vehicle ferry. Last August, fully half of Tim’s flying was for MSF (Doctors Without Borders). He has made 13 flights into Malemba, carrying nearly 100 staff and close to 14,000 pounds of vaccines and other medical cargo. The airstrip at the nearby township of Mukubu had been out of service for many years and was badly overgrown, but the residents wanted MSF’s help so desperately that they orchestrated a community effort of 300 people who worked for four days to clear and reopen the landing field so Tim could deliver an MSF survey team and preliminary supplies. In addition, he conducted 11 flight hours of survey flying over two days while the MSF-Netherlands mission mapped out other isolated locations around the province to be the bases of operation in successive phases of the vaccination campaign in the very near future.”
