GIFT
C ATA L O G 2011
Dear Friend of MAF, With Christmas approaching and the spirit of giving setting us off in search of the perfect gift for friends and family, this catalog presents a special opportunity for you to give a gift that will make a lasting difference in the lives of isolated people around the world. Instead of giving a material object that might soon be forgotten, consider how you might be able to give a gift that opens doors to talking about the Gospel with others. Your choice to give a gift that positively impacts someone in a remote place sends a significant message: You can make a difference. And even more so, you can contribute toward helping someone experience the power of the Gospel and hear the truth. In 2011, MAF faced many obstacles and challenges, but all the while celebrated God’s faithfulness as we remained committed to our calling. From delivering vaccinations for the measles and cholera outbreak in Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to assisting with the famine in Somalia, MAF responded to immediate needs as we maintained a daily presence in areas dependent upon our services. This Christmas season, I hope that you consider sending a gift in honor of the special people in your life. Over the following pages of this catalog, you will read firsthand accounts of how MAF is turning your support into a lasting impact and stories of God using MAF staff to influence others. This year, we have also conveniently included three cards you can send to friends or family to let them know you are giving a gift on their behalf (more cards are available upon request). Larger gifts may also qualify for one of our premium gifts to give away or keep if you like. As you select gifts from the following pages, may you experience God’s joy and rejoice in your opportunity to generously give to help build His Kingdom and transform lives all over the world. Yours in Christ,
John C. Boyd, President and CEO, MAF USA

It is the policy of MAF to honestly and accurately share the challenges and situations we face in all areas of worldwide ministry. We make known these needs and potential solutions so friends can prayerfully consider sharing financially as the Lord leads and enables. We believe motivation for all true giving comes from God as He moves in the hearts of people. Our part is to provide giving opportunities without imposing undue obligation or pressure. As responsible stewards, when funding requirements for a preferred need are met, it is MAF policy to apply remaining funds to another pressing need. An audited financial statement is available upon request. We assure you that your identity as a donor is kept confidential. We will not sell or rent your name to any other organization. We pledge to be responsible in our management, truthful in our advertising, and cost-effective in our finances. Projects and gift items in this catalog illustrate the scope of MAF work. All contributions received will support the global ministry of MAF. Contributions are accepted with the understanding that MAF has complete control over the use of all donated funds. MAF maintains the highest standards of financial accountability and public disclosure to donors, the government, and the world at large. MAF is a member of ... ACCORD, CSC Christian Service Charities, ECFA Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability, IAMA International Association of Missionary Aviation, and The Mission Exchange.
YOUR GIFTS MAKE A DIFFERENCE! Gifts from last year’s giving catalog helped do so many great things. Here are a few highlights of the impact friends like you have made through your generous support of MAF.
WITH YOUR HELP LAST YEAR, MAF … • executed 33,365 flights • transported 94,961 passengers • delivered 9.18 million pounds of cargo
LIVING WATER An MAF team of workers helped construct four new wells this year in the African country of Mali where Islam, animism, and witchcraft are the main religions. The team also showed the “JESUS” film and shared the Good News. Thirty-three villagers made commitments to follow Christ and are being discipled by local pastors. Praise God for this unique ministry that brings life-sustaining and living water.
DELIVERING BIBLES IN PAPUA, INDONESIA Last year the Lani-speaking people of the highland areas of Papua, Indonesia, received a gift 35 years in the making–the Bible in their own language. Throughout the translation process, MAF supported the work of translators from CrossWorld, Christian Missionary Alliance, and World Team. This year, MAF helped deliver the second load of Lani Bibles–10,000 Bibles in total–to highland areas that are accessible only by plane.

Ministry Highlight MAF pilot Tim Chase and his wife, Karen, are in Lubumbashi where MAF is completing many flights to combat a measles epidemic. Karen writes, “Malemba is a 1.5-hour MAF flight or a two-day overland trip that includes horrendous roads, barricades by corrupt traffic police demanding exorbitant bribes, and a risky river crossing on a battered, single-vehicle ferry. Last August, fully half of Tim’s flying was for MSF (Doctors Without Borders). He has made 13 flights into Malemba, carrying nearly 100 staff and close to 14,000 pounds of vaccines and other medical cargo. The airstrip at the nearby township of Mukubu had been out of service for many years and was badly overgrown, but the residents wanted MSF’s help so desperately that they orchestrated a community effort of 300 people who worked for four days to clear and reopen the landing field so Tim could deliver an MSF survey team and preliminary supplies. In addition, he conducted 11 flight hours of survey flying over two days while the MSF-Netherlands mission mapped out other isolated locations around the province to be the bases of operation in successive phases of the vaccination campaign in the very near future.”

FLY VACCINES TO CHILDREN The 2011 measles epidemic in Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is a prime example of the critical role MAF plays all around the world in providing vaccines (see side bar). Each year, MAF delivers tons of vaccines to remote areas, protecting children against polio, diphtheria, measles, and other illnesses. Your gift of $179 will deliver 5,000 vaccines and stop the needless deaths and suffering these diseases cause. And for the children these vaccines reach, your generosity will be a gift that lasts their entire lifetime! 1. Fly Vaccines to Children

FLY MEDICAL SUPPLIES In the remote village of Danowage, Papua, one of the village wives, Ledipena, was suffering from cerebral malaria. She was having seizures, and her breathing was labored; her health was declining rapidly. A medical evacuation was needed, but the only plane that could land there was the MAF float plane MP-MAO, which was being inspected and was unavailable. The other option was a two-day trip down the river, which was out of the question. Eventually, the missionaries who were caring for her ran out of IV quinine and
fluids. They made another emergency call to MAF, and an airdrop was arranged. The MAF plane flew in low over the village and padded boxes that contained the medications were pushed out. The woman was able to receive the IVs she needed and began to improve. Every week, MAF transports tons of vital emergency and medical cargo. In hundreds of remote areas, clinics and hospitals receive their medicine, medical equipment, and supplies from MAF airplanes. For $72, we can deliver 75 pounds of medical supplies. 3. Ministry Highlight In the rugged mountains of Lesotho, Africa, MAF pilot Daniel Hulls and mechanic Roger Clark were preparing for takeoff from a remote mountain clinic when a “Code 1” call came in —a medical emergency. A young mother had just given birth. The baby was fine, but the mother was continuing to bleed. She needed surgery fast, or she would die. The only other travel option was a 10-hour bone-jarring ride in a minibus taxi, which she probably would not have survived. Instead, the MAF flight delivered her to the capital city of Maseru in 25 minutes. One week later, Roger saw her and the baby among a group of passengers. She was returning home, strong now.

FLY AN EMERGENCY MEDICAL EVACUATION For those living in the dense jungles of Kalimantan, Indonesia, or the high mountain villages of Papua, access to healthcare can require several days of walking over rough terrain. When injuries, serious illness, or complications during childbirth occur in these isolated places, many times the only hope of reaching medical help is an MAF airplane flying from small, hand-hewn airstrips. The average MAF medical evacuation flight costs about $1,000. Your gift of $55 will share the cost of an emergency flight to save lives in some of the most isolated villages in the world. 4. FLY AN INDIGENOUS PASTOR As the Gospel is spread to more and more people groups, the need for pastors and church leaders is multiplying in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Increasingly, indigenous church leaders are asking MAF to assist them with travel to remote churches, not only to lead the flocks there, but to train up new church leaders and pastors as well. MAF can transport a pastor to a remote church for $185. You can share the cost with a gift of $45 and make a difference for a remote congregation.
5. Fly an Indigenous Pastor
$185 $45
In Democratic Republic of the Congo, church leaders are trying to help heal and reconcile a country that has been torn apart by ethnic and tribal conflicts. When Daniel Kasereka, head of Organisation Evangélisation, Intercession and Liberation (OEIL), began his quest to equip local pastors on how to facilitate a biblical reconciliation process in 2004, it was dangerous. While the roads were already challenging due to their poor condition, the presence of armed assailants made land travel treacherous. However, MAF solved that problem for Kasereka, flying him across the country to meet with other pastors, as well as flying other pastors to regional reconciliation events. His ministry has since begun to thrive and is more efficient at reaching others in ways that weren’t possible before. “Now that we have reached all sectors of the community, we are going to the militia,” Kasereka said. “We are teaching them the Gospel and reaching such a big area, thanks to MAF.” Scan this QR code with your smartphone or visit www.maf.org/flyhopevideo to see how MAF is partnering with missionaries to share the Gospel with those who practice voodoo.

6 FLY A BIBLE TRANSLATION TEAM Bible translation is one of the most important tools missionaries use to reach a people group for Christ. Providing God’s Word in their own heart language allows indigenous people to explore and discover Him for themselves. In Africa, Indonesia, and Latin America, Bible translators and missionaries depend on MAF flights to get them safely and quickly to remote ministry sites. You can fly a full translation team for $1,000. Or, your gift of $35 to share the cost will help bring God’s Word to a people group who have never read the Bible in their own language. 6. FLY BIBLES TO A REMOTE VILLAGE The natural next step after completing the Bible translation process is to print and deliver Bibles to the community. CELL PHONE BIBLE STUDY RESOURCES Seventy-seven percent of the world population uses a mobile phone. MAF provides cutting-edge technology to help Christians “blend in with the crowd” while studying their Bibles or taking discipleship courses … all via their mobile phones. It’s just one of the creative ways MAF brings the Word to those who have no access to it or who cannot openly read it without persecution. Developing the tools to enable a mobile theology curriculum or Bible study program costs $60,000. You can share the cost with a gift of $50 and provide Bibles and training that would otherwise not be accessible. 8. Cell Phone Bible Study

BIBLE STORIES FOR THOSE WHO CANNOT READ In many isolated communities, modern education is unavailable and the majority of the people cannot read. Some cultures are based on oral traditions and do not have a written language. Using God’s Story materials and Bible storytelling, MAF orality specialist Regina Manley trains local pastors and church leaders to share the Gospel using the oral storytelling traditions of the people they are serving. “Many of the isolated people we are trying to reach cannot just pick up the Bible and read it,” Regina said. “Oral storytelling makes it possible to give them God’s Word, story by story. They can have it as a treasure in their heart pocket–ready for their own reflection or to share with others.” Providing a workshop to train several local church leaders costs about $6,000. You can share the cost with a gift of $60 and put God’s Word in the “heart pockets” of indigenous people.

Ministry Highlight Ten days after the 2010 Haiti earthquake, nine-year-old Mika was in bad shape. Both of her feet had been crushed when her home collapsed. Without orthopedic surgery, infection could set in, possibly taking her life. Surgery would have to be performed within 24 to 36 hours, or her feet would require amputation. MAF pilot Will White knew there was a team of doctors back in Port-auPrince, waiting their turn for an MAF flight. Maybe they could help. He put Mika and her mother on the plane and took off from the island of La Gonave. On their arrival in Port-au-Prince, those doctors were standing next to the plane with all of their medical supplies. It turns out they were just what the girl needed ‌ orthopedic surgeons! In no time the doctors were examining Mika’s feet. Within minutes, Will was airborne again, heading for the hospital with three surgeons, Mika, and her mother aboard. Today, Mika has the use of both feet.

Missionary Spotlight MAF pilots Dave Forney and Paul College fly over the remote jungles of Kalimantan, Indonesia. Last year, they set out for a trek through the jungles of Borneo to discover what the terrain was like on foot. Dave Forney says of their experience, “We could have spent a comfortable, quick, eight minutes in one of our little MAF airplanes and covered the entire distance that it took us five grueling days to cover by foot! “It’s simply impractical and often impossible for most people to travel long distances by any means other than MAF out here in the jungles of Kalimantan.”

FLY RELIEF WORKERS TO A DISASTER SITE In Bunia, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, MAF pilots know that a call for a Saturday flight means “urgent” or “life and death.” It usually means a Congolese village has been attacked by the LRA. The people live in sheer terror knowing that rebels can come at any moment to rape, burn, steal, kidnap, or kill. “We need to get to Dingila, Ngilima, and Doruma,” says a caller from Doctors Without Borders. “The LRA was there last night. So many are injured.” For $185, we can take one relief worker to the place they’re most needed. 22. Transport Relief Workers

MAINTENANCE Flying over impenetrable mountains or jungles is unforgiving. That’s why MAF places such a strong emphasis on training, safety, and maintenance. In fact, MAF standards exceed comparable air service requirements in the U.S., leading to a safety record that is outstanding and ever improving. Your gift of $1,500 covers an entire month of maintenance for one of our hard-working planes. This year alone, 33,400 MAF flights will send hope and help into the most remote, hard-to-reach mission fields. Thousands of people in Africa, Asia, Eurasia, and Latin America depend on our pilots. And our pilots depend on safe equipment. 23. Maintenance

Stan Lincoln couldn’t put it out of his mind. As the chief of maintenance for the East Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) program, he was uneasy with what looked like the beginnings of a malfunction on one part of a Caravan plane he was monitoring. Due to the unusual appearance, he decided to take a picture and send it to the plane’s engineers to see if they could discover what might be wrong with the part. With the plane scheduled for a four-hour flight in the morning, Stan decided to ground the plane so he could take a further look. He took the engine apart to retrieve the questionable part and mailed it back to headquarters. It turned out that Stan made a good decision–it was discovered that six turbine discs were cracked. What could that have meant? Imminent–and sudden–engine failure. No pilot wants to grapple with that situation, especially over the unforgiving jungle terrain in DRC and the massive Lake Victoria, which was part of the next day’s scheduled flight plan.
As a thank you for your gift of $1,500 or more, we will send you a KODIAK model airplane!

PAINT JOB Daily use, rough airstrips, and the heat of the tropical areas where MAF serves mean planes need to be repainted every 10 to15 years. While meticulous care is taken to ensure the engine is in perfect working order, passengers only see the condition of the outside of the plane. Painting aircraft on the field is not an easy task. In the areas where a suitable paint shop is not available, MAF workers set up makeshift painting stations and must take the plane apart piece-by-piece. For the labor and the special paint needed, it costs roughly $12,000 to paint each plane. There are currently five planes in the MAF fleet that are in need of an allover paint job. Your gift of $12,000 or $120 to share the cost will help reflect MAF’s strong emphasis on plane maintenance, both inside and out. 25. Paint Job

PURCHASE A CARAVAN As the scarcity and price of aviation gasoline continues to increase overseas, MAF is hoping to add two Caravan aircraft to its fleet in 2012. Each Caravan aircraft costs an average of $1,800,000. FILL THE FUEL TANK More than 30 Cessna 206s reside in MAF’s worldwide fleet, and they complete a large bulk of daily flights to remote regions. The 206 is a perfect airplane for flying to rugged airstrips—it can take off and land in a very short distance. These sturdy planes are fueled by aviation gasoline (avgas), which is becoming more and more difficult to obtain. Watching prices fluctuate at the local gas pump is a good example of how supply dictates price. The low supply of avgas in many of the remote locations where MAF serves is requiring some MAF pilots to pay between $12 and $16 per gallon. Consider this comment from MAF staff in the field: “We turned down several flight requests because we didn’t have enough reserve fuel to keep flying.” –Mozambique Your gift of $495 can provide 45 gallons of avgas in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Or, if you’d like to share the cost, $55 will buy five gallons. By providing fuel for MAF’s planes, you will enable thousands of isolated people to see the compassion of Jesus Christ in action. 27. DIG A WELL IN MALI TO PROVIDE WATER In the desert land of Mali, many live without access to clean drinking water, and droughts send this agricultural country into periods of famine. Teams of Malian MAF staff have been hand-digging wells and sharing the Gospel with grateful villagers since 1989. When Malian MAF staff enter new villages to dig a well, the “JESUS” film is also presented, bringing “living water” along with fresh, safe drinking water. Thousands have come to know Jesus, and many churches have been started through this project. One well costs $10,000 to dig, or you can help share the cost to bring “living water” to the people of Mali for $75.
