Dissecting the #PizzaGate Conspiracy Theories

In the span of a few weeks, a false rumor that Hillary Clinton and her top aides were involved in various crimes snowballed into a wild conspiracy theory that they were running a child-trafficking ring out of a Washington pizza parlor. The fast evolution of the false theory revealed how a powerful mix of fake news and social media led an armed North Carolina man to investigate the rumors about the pizza place, Comet Ping Pong, last Sunday.

How the #PizzaGate conspiracy theory evolved

1 WikiLeaks began releasing emails hacked from the account of John Podesta, Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman, a month before the election.

2 Social media users on a popular Reddit forum dedicated to Donald J. Trump and 4chan’s far-right fringe message board searched the releases for evidence of wrongdoing.

3 Within the emails were discussions that include the word pizza, including dinner plans between Mr. Podesta and his lobbyist brother, Tony Podesta.

4 A participant on 4chan connected the phrase “cheese pizza” to pedophiles, who on chat boards use the initials “c.p.” to denote child pornography.

5 Following the use of “pizza,” theorists focused on the Washington pizza restaurant Comet Ping Pong. The WikiLeaks emails revealed that John Podesta corresponded with Comet’s owner, James Alefantis, who had connections to Democratic operatives.

6 The theory started snowballing, taking on the meme #PizzaGate. Fake news articles emerged and were spread on Twitter and Facebook.

7 The false stories swept up neighboring businesses and bands that had played at Comet. Theories about kill rooms, underground tunnels, satanism and even cannibalism emerged in fabricated stories and on social media.

8 On Dec. 4, Edgar M. Welch, a 28-year-old from North Carolina, arrived at Comet with a military-style rifle and a handgun. The police said he fired the rifle inside the pizzeria, hurting no one, and surrendered after finding no evidence to support claims of child slaves being held there.

9 The shooting did not put the theory to rest. Purveyors of the theory and fake news pointed to the mainstream media as conspirators of a coverup to protect what they said was a crime ring.

The conspiracy theory took the internet by storm. YouTube clips pushed the false story, racking up hundreds of thousands of views. Tens of thousands of individuals subscribed to message boards, feeding into theories with fake news reports and crowd-driven detective work. The police refuted the claims of an online pedophile ring running out of Comet Ping Pong, but the theories continued. Here are eight that gave #PizzaGate momentum.

Did you leave a handkerchief

Podesta’s leaked emails contained secret code language.

Combing through John Podesta’s leaked emails, members of a far-right fringe community on the social media site 4chan and Trump supporters on Reddit pulled out a number of emails unconnected to politics. Several of them mentioned pizza or other Italian food.

The most cited email revolved around a handkerchief left at a house Mr. Podesta visited with a real estate agent. It led to speculation that the handkerchief and map on it were clues to some sort of wrongdoing.

The emails contained coded messages about pedophilia.

The term “cheese pizza” had previously been used on 4chan as code for “child pornography.” An anonymous user speculated that other food-related terms could also have double meanings.

An anonymous post on 4chan’s “so-called alt-right” discussion board in November. This interpretation spread, and other emails containing supposed code words were reinterpreted as evidence of pedophile activity. For example, this 2015 email was taken as an inquiry about providing sexual services.

The Podesta brothers were famous in Washington circles for their Italian cooking and big salon and fund-raising dinners, often cooked by their mother.

Comet Ping Pong is at the center of it.

Some pizza-related emails mentioned a Washington pizzeria, Comet Ping Pong, whose owner is connected to prominent Democratic figures. An email about a pizza fund-raiser there fed speculation about sex parties.

The pizza parlor owner was swept into the rumormongering on message boards. Amateur online sleuths linked the pizzeria’s signage to satanic symbols. Fake stories emerged putting the restaurant in the center of a child-trafficking ring.

An Instagram photo is proof of a link between Obama and Comet Ping Pong.

A photo of President Obama playing table tennis was used by conspiracy theorists to connect him to the pizza restaurant. In a video, this photo is introduced with “here is Obama at Comet Ping Pong.”

However, this photo is of a framed picture within the White House, and the original photograph was taken inside the White House, not the Comet Ping Pong restaurant. Mr. Alefantis took the picture of the photograph at the White House and posted it on his Instagram account, according to a spokesperson for the restaurant.

Comet Ping Pong and other nearby businesses use pedophile symbols in logos.

According to an F.B.I. document released by WikiLeaks, the following symbols are used by pedophiles to identify sexual preferences. Conspiracy theorists claimed that other design elements used by businesses near the Comet Ping Pong restaurant also resembled pedophile symbols. However, countless other major American brand logos contain similar shapes. Hearts, triangles and spirals are widely used symbols in business logos.

Comet Ping Pong had a secret kill room and posted a picture of it on Instagram. Fake stories claimed underground tunnels and child trafficking in the basement.

A photo shows a walk-in refrigerator supposedly in the restaurant, described as part of a network of underground facilities. However, a reporter can confirm that there is no basement in Comet Ping Pong.

Comet’s spokesperson said the photo was taken during a visit to a restaurant Mr. Alefantis was considering leasing. Comet uses a low-slung refrigerator at Buck’s Fishing & Camping, Mr. Alefantis’s other restaurant two doors down on the same block, to store produce, cheese and proofing dough.

This photo was found on James Alefantis’s Instagram account, and #PizzaGate believers claimed it as proof that he is a pedophile. However, the man with the black T-shirt was not James Alefantis. It was a co-owner of a different restaurant in Washington, named L’Enfant Cafe-Bar. (And in case you’re wondering, that restaurant was named after Pierre Charles L’Enfant, an American colonist from France who served under George Washington during the Revolutionary War.)

The owner of Comet Ping Pong admitted he was a pedophile — on a T-shirt.

John and Tony Podesta personally kidnapped Madeleine McCann from her bed at a Portugal resort in 2007.

Another part of the conspiracy theory was a supposed link between the Podesta brothers and the child abduction case of Madeleine McCann on May 3, 2007. Two e-fit (electronic facial identification technique) photos released by British detectives were repeatedly used as evidence.

However, the two e-fits were based on descriptions of a single suspect by two witnesses, not two different suspects, a crucial detail that was left out. According to The Guardian, the witnesses described the man as “white, aged between 20 and 40, with short brown hair, of medium build, medium height and clean shaven.” In 2007, Tony Podesta was 64 and John Podesta was 58.

The information that the Podestas were in Portugal is solely sourced to “FBI Anon,” quoted in Victurus Libertas, a conspiracy-minded news site that suggests, among other things, that the Titanic was deliberately sunk and that the queen of England is a reptilian alien.

Lügen und Verunglimpfungen über die politische Gegnerin gehörten in Donald Trumps Wahlkampf zum festen Programm. Und das Internet gab ihm und seinen Anhängern auch alle Freiheiten, Unwahrheiten zu verbreiten. Der Sieg, so könnte man sagen, gibt ihm recht. Der Zweck heiligt schliesslich die Mittel. Wie leicht die Verbreitung erfundener Gerüchte und Verschwörungstheorien in handfeste Gewalt umschlagen kann, zeigt jedoch der Vorfall vom Sonntag in der Pizzeria Comet Ping Pong in Washington.

Getrieben von einer Verschwörungstheorie

Kurz vor drei Uhr nachmittags betrat ein 28-jähriger Mann die Pizzeria und richtete sein Gewehr auf einen Angestellten. Dieser konnte aber offenbar fliehen und die Polizei informieren, wie der « Guardian » berichtet. Während die Gäste aus dem Restaurant rannten, feuerte der Mann mindestens einen Schuss ab. Die Sicherheitskräfte umstellten das Lokal und konnten den Täter überwältigen, der eine weitere Waffe auf sich trug und eine dritte in seinem Auto mit sich führte. Laut der Polizei gestand der Verhaftete später im Verhör, dass er das Restaurant aufgesucht hatte, um auf eigene Faust den « Pizzagate »-Skandal zu untersuchen.

« Pizzagate » ist eine Fake-Nachricht, die im Wahlkampf von Trump-Anhängern gestrickt und verbreitet worden war. Als dünnes Fundament diente den Verschwörungstheoretikern zunächst der Sexting-Skandal von Anthony Weiner, der bis vor kurzem mit Clintons Beraterin Huma Abedin liiert war. Weiner musste 2011 sein Mandat als Kongressabgeordneter aufgeben, weil er Nacktbilder von sich über Social Media verschickt hatte. Im August trennte sich Abedin von Weiner, nachdem bekannt geworden war, dass er offenbar einschlägige Bilder an eine Minderjährige verschickt hatte. Ende Oktober verkündete das FBI, im Zusammenhang mit den Ermittlungen gegen Weiner die E-Mails auf Abedins Computer zu überprüfen. Kurz danach verbreitete sich auf Twitter die Nachricht, dass diese Untersuchungen zu einem Pädophilenring führten, in dessen Zentrum Hillary Clinton stünde.

Weiteres Futter für ihre obskuren Erfindungen fanden die Trump-Trolle in den von Wikileaks veröffentlichten E-Mails des Clinton-Beraters John Podesta. Dieser stand in Kontakt mit dem Pizzeria-Besitzer James Alefantis, einem grossen Anhänger und Fundraiser der Demokratischen Partei. Dieser E-Mail-Kontakt genügte Internetnutzern, um daraus eine abstruse Geschichte zu konstruieren. Sie behaupteten, die Nachrichten enthielten Codewörter: « Cheese » stehe für « kleines Mädchen », « sauce » für Orgie. Und das alles sei Beweis genug, dass Clinton von der Pizzeria Comet aus einen Pädophilenring betreibe.

Beschimpfungen und Morddrohungen

Alefantis erhielt alsbald Beschimpfungen und Morddrohungen über SMS, soziale Netzwerke und E-Mail. Und die Internet-Trolle sollen seinen Instagram-Account nach Kinderbildern durchsucht haben. « Sie kümmern sich nicht um grundlegende Fakten », erklärte Alefantis gegenüber der BBC. Es werde behauptet, dass der Pädophilenring von seinem Keller aus betrieben würde. « Wir haben gar keinen Keller. »

Die niederträchtige Lügengeschichte wurde aber nicht nur von Trumps Fussvolk im Internet verbreitet. Auch Trumps künftiger Sicherheitsberater General Michael Flynn empfahl auf Twitter einen Artikel darüber mit der Bemerkung: « Must read! »

« Was heute passiert ist, zeigt, dass die Verbreitung von leichtsinnigen Verschwörungstheorien Folgen hat », erklärte Alefantis gegenüber der « New York Times ». Er hoffe, dass die Brandstifter nun zur Besinnung kämen und ihre Lügen nicht weiter verbreiteten.

Les fausses informations, fake news, qui circulent et s’amplifient en ligne sont accusées d’avoir joué un rôle dans l’élection de Donald Trump. Si leur explosion en ligne est indéniable, leur influence est plus difficile à évaluer, et à prouver. Toutes les fake news ne se valent pas. Celle qui dit que le pape François a soutenu le candidat Trump (ce qui est faux) n’a pas de grave répercussion.

Celle qui dit qu’un réseau de pédophilie, avec des proches d’Hillary Clinton à sa tête, sévit dans une pizzeria réputée de Washington a, en revanche, eu des conséquences bien réelles.

Un homme de 28 ans, armé d’un fusil d’assaut AR-15, est entré dans le restaurant Comet Ping Pong, le 4 décembre. Plusieurs coups de feu ont été tirés, après que les clients ont évacué les lieux et avant l’arrivée des policiers. Après son arrestation, l’individu a expliqué qu’il avait voulu « mener sa propre enquête » sur cette théorie du complot, nourrie et alimentée depuis plusieurs mois par plusieurs canaux numériques conspirationnistes.

« Pizzagate » : d’une rumeur en ligne aux coups de feu dans une pizzeria

Qu’est-ce que le « Pizzagate »?

Cette théorie du complot est apparue, a été développée et largement diffusée par des comptes anonymes sur les réseaux sociaux, en passant par les forums Reddit et Voat. Elle est un agrégat de rumeurs préexistantes sur le Web ultraconservateur et à tendance conspirationniste américain, avec l’idée centrale qu’il existerait un « trafic d’enfants » au sommet de l’appareil démocrate, piloté par l’entourage de la candidate Hillary Clinton.

La diffusion par WikiLeaks des e-mails piratés de John Podesta, directeur de campagne de Mme Clinton, a donné une nouvelle vie à cette rumeur. Les conspirationnistes ont remarqué que le mot « pizza » et le nom de la pizzeria Comet Ping Pong y apparaissaient à plusieurs reprises ; que le gérant, James Alefantis, était un soutien de Mme Clinton ; et qu’il avait parlé avec M. Podesta d’y organiser une soirée de levée de fonds.

Ils y ont joint la fausse histoire du trafic d’enfants, pensant que le mot « pizza » était un nom de code pour « petite fille », faisant ainsi de la cave de Comet Ping Pong le « lieu de rendez-vous » des trafics et rencontres pédophiles.

Le fantasme d’un réseau de pédophilie piloté par le Parti démocrate a encore grandi avec l’enquête du FBI contre Anthony Weiner, l’ex-mari d’Huma Abedin, conseillère d’Hillary Clinton. Il est poursuivi pour avoir envoyé des messages à caractère sexuel à une mineure. Après la fouille de son ordinateur personnel, il est apparu que la messagerie de Weiner contenait des e-mails du département d’Etat.

Comment a-t-elle été diffusée ?

Le 30 octobre, selon une chronologie établie par Buzzfeed, le « Pizzagate » commence avec le tweet d’un individu se faisant passer pour un avocat juif : celui-ci prétend que la police enquête sur des e-mails d’Anthony Weiner pour trouver les preuves d’un vaste « réseau de pédophilie » autour de la candidate.

Le « scandale pédophile » apparaît sur un forum conspirationniste. Il est repris par un site qui colporte de fausses informations, qui devient alors la source de nombreux blogs ultraconservateurs ou suprémacistes et autres plates-formes ayant peu de scrupules à faire circuler des informations non avérées.

Le 2 novembre, l’« histoire » atterrit sur le très douteux TruePundit, qui prétend avoir une nouvelle source anonyme dans la police new yorkaise. La boucle des fake news est bouclée quand le compte @DavidGoldbergNY publie l’article de TruePundit, élaboré à partir d’une rumeur qu’il a lui-même lancée.

Parallèlement, des utilisateurs de 4chan voient le nom de M. Alefantis dans les échanges d’e-mails de M. Podesta révélés par WikiLeaks. Les spéculations se multiplient alors et il faut peu de temps pour que la pizzeria Comet Ping Pong devienne le lieu de supposées réunions pédophiles.

La « théorie » est passée d’une plateforme à l’autre, se renforçant et étant validée d’un forum à l’autre, donnant à des détails insignifiants une signification démesurée. La communauté « Pizzagate » sur Reddit a été l’un des épicentres de cette affaire. Elle a été fermée par les modérateurs en novembre car des informations personnelles d’employés de la pizzeria y étaient postées. Elle a vite été rouverte sur Voat, forum dont les utilisateurs sont attirés par le peu de modération.

Il faut toutefois des relais pour qu’une telle histoire sorte des forums anonymisés et atteigne le grand public: Des médias, comme Snopes ou le Washington Post, en ont parlé. Mais dans le but de montrer à leurs lecteurs qu’elle ne reposait sur rien. Certains des journalistes ont aussi été harcelés en ligne.

• Des responsables politiques de haut rang, comme le général Mike Flynn, futur conseiller à la sécurité nationale de Donald Trump, l’ont fait circuler sur les réseaux sociaux, laissant entendre, de manière totalement irresponsable, que tout cela pourrait bien être vrai.

Cette histoire malsaine est à ranger dans la longue lignée des fausses nouvelles, comme la campagne américaine en a compté des dizaines. A ceci près qu’elle a abouti à ce qu’un homme armé fasse irruption dans une pizzeria remplie de clients, dont des enfants. Les autorités locales sont maintenant coscientes du degré de harcèlement et du drame possible qui a été evité.

Le 25 novembre, le New York Times rapportait déjà le calvaire vécu par James Alefantis et ses employés, harcelés et menacés en ligne. Certains disent avoir reçu des centaines de messages de mort ou avoir vu des photos de leurs familles ou leur adresse postées sur Internet. Certains salariés de la pizzeria ont même démissionné, selon M. Alefantis.

D’après le New York Times, des photos d’enfants apparaissant sur la page Facebook du restaurant ou sur les comptes d’utilisateurs ayant « aimé » la page sont considérées comme autant de preuves qu’un trafic existe.

A la fin de novembre, un autre homme s’était déjà rendu dans le restaurant et avait commencé à filmer les lieux après avoir lu toutes les rumeurs sur Internet. Il avait été chassé par la police, qui avait reconnu l’existence de « menaces » contre le restaurant. « Ce qu’il s’est passé [le 4 décembre avec les coups de feu] démontre que répandre des théories du complot a vraiment des conséquences », a résumé James Alefantis.
