Dear Friend of Madonna,

Presence is an incredible gift, one that defines who we are as individuals and how our days unfold more than we recognize. Simply put, where we are in the world and who we spend time with shapes and colors our perspectives in profound and powerful ways.

When students spend each school day with peers who have a wide array of abilities and needs, including those with special needs, they learn that human life is not painted by God in a single hue but is a kaleidoscope, with each individual color contrasting yet complimenting the next as they combine to build a beautiful whole. They encounter human differences, their hearts are invited to embrace empathy, and they learn the real power of service—the one serving is actually the one being served.

When parents have the opportunity to send their children to the same school, regardless of each child’s abilities, it strengthens their family’s bond and provides them with a shared family experience of learning, friendship, and community. When that shared family experience of school is in a Catholic School, faith joins the family’s experience in ways that can be transformational.

When students and adults of all abilities are welcomed into the full life of community—whether that community is a family, school, parish, workplace, or neighborhood—the community itself is strengthened by their sheer presence. When that community fully recognizes and embraces the abilities of all, rather than focusing on their limitations, that community is renewed.

The powerful presence of Madonna’s students and adult clients is written across Omaha. Their innate abilities are being recognized and tapped into at rates never seen before—strengthening schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods—and transforming our community for the better.

Thank you for your support and advocacy for Madonna which allows us to share the wonderful gifts of our students and clients with every community they encounter.

God Bless,

INCLUSIVE ELEMENTARY EDUCATION

Christine Di Masi Tran and Tin Tran were ecstatic to welcome their first child, Joseph, in December 2013. When his little sister, Margaret, joined the family two years later, they were immersed in all the joys and duties of raising a young family, including seeking out an educational home for both children.

Having attended Catholic elementary and high schools—Saint Margaret Mary and Marian for Christine, St. Bernard and Creighton Prep for Tin—the Trans envisioned a similar path for their children. However, when Joseph was born with Down syndrome, they embraced the support provided by Omaha Public School’s early childhood education services.

Their relationship with OPS began when Joseph was just a newborn and continued through pre-school. He had an amazing experience in OPS’ inclusive pre-school classroom at Gateway Early Learning Center and, as kindergarten approached, the family assumed his opportunities would be in public school. Still, the desire for a shared family experience of Catholic school lingered.

A chance meeting at the doctor’s office changed the Tran’s journey. While waiting for Joseph’s routine check, Christine and Tin met a young woman with Down syndrome and her mother. During their conversation, the Tran’s learned this young woman attended and graduated from a Catholic parish elementary school in Omaha.

Filled with hope and questions, the Trans initiated a dialogue with several Catholic schools and were immediately drawn to the diverse and welcoming community of St. Pius/St. Leo School. During their initial conversation, SPSL Principal Dr. Cory Sepich, shared news of an emerging partnership with Madonna School & Community-Based Services. Through this partnership, supported by Madonna’s Special Education experts, students with mild to moderate intellectual and developmental disabilities

The Tran Family and St. Pius/St. Leo School

and autism would have the opportunity to attend SPSL and learn side-by-side with their siblings, friends, and peers. This program perfectly matched the Tran’s priorities of a shared Catholic Education for their children and an inclusive classroom experience for Joseph—an environment in which he thrived at OPS. Christine said, “The timing was serendipitous!”

Joseph entered kindergarten at SPSL in the fall of 2019, the inaugural year of the Inclusive Education Program. The team of Madonna’s educational leaders, service providers, SPSL administrators, and teachers work in close partnership to ensure Joseph is supported academically and socially in an inclusive setting. In addition to the rich academic curriculum provided by SPSL, Madonna’s full suite of related services gives Joseph access to physical and occupational therapy, speech therapy, and psych/applied behavioral analysis. The Trans were surprised to learn music therapy was a part of Madonna’s offerings as well—and Joseph loves it! The educational team has set high expectations and Joseph has risen to them. Christine commented, “The teachers believe in Joseph and are dedicated to his success in the classroom. Joseph is welcomed and celebrated.”

Today, Joseph is in the 4th grade, Margaret is in 2nd grade, and the family recently welcomed Baby #3! Joseph and Margaret attend Mass on the same day each week and are part of the same school community. Joseph is integrated with his peers and enjoys birthday parties and play dates. He is obsessed with sports and is on the SPSL basketball and soccer teams—he gets in and gets to play—and receives cheers and support from teammates and parents alike!

For the Trans, the once elusive vision of a shared family experience of Catholic school has become a reality. Though being part of a new program was a huge leap of faith, it was faith, after all, that drew them to Catholic Education!

MADONNA + SIENA-FRANCIS HOUSE

A Win-Win Partnership

In the earliest days of the COVID-19 pandemic, when crisis and confusion reigned, a strong partnership to serve the homeless was born between Madonna School & Community-Based Services and the Siena Francis House, an organization that empowers those experiencing homelessness to navigate their path to housing.

Uncertain of the impact the pandemic would have on mission-critical hourly staff and volunteers, Madonna President, Jon Burt, and Siena Francis House Executive Director, Linda Twomey, struck up a conversation about potentially leveraging and sharing resources.

Thankfully, both Madonna and Siena Francis were able to keep their staff engaged and employed. However, health guidelines forced Siena Francis to keep it’s incredible volunteer base on the bench, threatening critical services to the homeless of Omaha, including providing daily sack lunches.

Enter Madonna’s Transition program. Transition, a career and life skills training program for young adults ages 18-21, is centered on community outings and volunteer opportunities, which were also off the table during the pandemic. Darian Stout, Director of Madonna’s Transition program, knew he needed to somehow fill this gap for his students.

One of the Transition program returning students in 2020-2021 was Jenna Twomey, Linda’s daughter. After a quick conversation with Madonna, the idea was hatched for Madonna students to step in for Siena Francis volunteers to prepare sack lunches for the homeless. Food supplies would be delivered to Madonna, where students would

16

faithfully prepare hundreds of lunches daily, and Siena Francis would then deliver the lunches to our brothers and sisters in need.

Lunch preparation for Siena Francis has expanded beyond Madonna’s Transition classroom with Secondary students and Adult Services clients also lending their helping hands. To date, Madonna students and adult clients have prepared over 40,000 lunches for the homeless since the partnership launched in September 2020!

Through this partnership, Madonna students and clients are developing job skills, working as members of a team, and learning to be responsible to a project manager, all while giving back to their community. Darian added, “The students find great accomplishment from both the process of making and packaging lunches, as well as knowing that they are lending a helping hand to those in need.”

Critical to this partnership has been the work of longtime and beloved Siena Francis House employee, T-Byrd, who has coordinated the transportation of supplies and collection of assembled lunches since day one. T-Byrd and the white Siena Francis van have become a friendly, familiar sight on the Madonna campus! T-Byrd commented, “It’s an important and needed service as many of our guests rely on the sack lunches. I enjoy making my rounds to Madonna—the best part is seeing the students, they really lift me up every time!”

Madonna + Siena Francis House is a powerful partnership and a great example of the positive impact Madonna students and clients are having on our Omaha community. Madonna thanks Linda, T-Byrd, and the entire Siena Francis team for providing this incredible opportunity for our students and clients to volunteer in service to those in need.

Left: Adult Services clients assemble lunches. Right: Students and Adult Services clients enjoy spending time together while they sort through donated food items including bread, chips, cookies, and lunch meat. Last but not least, we love to see our good friend T-Byrd from Siena Francis House when he stops by to pick everything up!

Each year, Madonna School & Community-Based Services receives gifts to memorialize or honor a loved one. These gifts are meaningful to Madonna as they show the regard the donor has for our important work with youth and adults with disabilities. We are humbled by the confidence that is placed in us to continue our ministry. Below is a list of those for whom gifts were received between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023.
