Our Motto
Our Mission
“Together We Can!” A YEAR IN PHOTOS 27
Our Mascot The Monarch butterfly symbolizes transformation and growth which is the goal for our students as we help them achieve their greatest potential.
Madonna Learning Center provides a nurturing, faith based, educational and social environment that empowers children and adult with special needs to reach their full potential while offering support to their families. Our Vision The vision of Madonna Learning Center is to enable children and adults with special needs to enjoy a productive and satisfying quality of life.
MESSAGE FROM
OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, JO GILBERT
Families and Friends,
What an amazing year we’ve had as we regained a sense of a typical school year. Our programs and activities returned and students were excited to see the smiling faces of their friends and teachers. We continued to implement CDC guidelines and our efforts resulted in another successful year without a spread of COVID within the school.
The Madonna faculty is by far the most dedicated and resourceful staff one could ask for. During these uncertain times, they became creative in offering all the services and programs to our students. Flexibility is our mantra and that flexibility has been put to the test since COVID first began. This staff makes our school run smoothly for the students, while guiding parents along the way!
It is however our students, trainees and adults that make Madonna so incredible. Each day is full of promise and joy as individual goals are achieved and celebrated. Our staff and volunteers feel blessed to be a part of our student’s lives.
Great opportunities are ahead for our MLC students and adults with the addition of new vocational opportunities, academic program expansion, after school options and a focus on enhanced health and fitness.
We are passionate about making the school the best it can be for our students by offering a wholistic environment. The completion of our health and fitness center will allow students and adults to learn techniques for proper exercise and the benefit of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Training on the new equipment in our fitness center will provide a structured and safe place allowing our students to become comfortable and confident on how to properly work out. They will then be able to transfer these skills into the community with confidence and independence.
We have continued to be blessed by our amazing donors, volunteers and friends. They have helped us not only maintain, but expand, the opportunities for our students and adults so they may become the very best they can be. We are truly grateful!
Join us as we continue to transform lives! Together We Can!
Programs and Services
Madonna’s academic programs are for students ranging in ages 4-19 and consist of six ungraded classes or “groups”. Groups 1 through 3 emulate kindergarten through middle school, followed by Jr. High and High School. Once a student graduates from High School they can go on to our Monarch Adult Program. Each group has two teachers (a licensed Special Education teacher and a teacher’s assistant). Classes range from 6 to 12 students depending on the individual needs in each group. Madonna believes in developing the “whole” child. Our programs and services improve their academic, physical, spiritual, emotional vocational and independent living skills.
Our academic programs consist of: Reading, Math, Science, Technology, and Current Events. In each of these programs, individual abilities are assessed and a curriculum is developed to meet each student’s learning needs. Every student is unique and every student is challenged and encouraged to reach their greatest potential. Our teachers use a variety of specialized resources and technology tools designed to motivate our students and make learning fun and engaging.
Madonna also provides health & fitness, music, dance and visual arts classes. We offer specialized therapies including behavior, speech & language and occupational therapy.
- PARENT OF MLC STUDENT
“WE’VE NOTICED A DRAMATIC CHANGE IN OUR CHILD’S DEVELOPMENT. WE HEAR IT ALL OF THE TIME FROM FRIENDS AND FAMILY.”
VISUAL AND PERFORMNG ARTS
Health and Fitness - Our curriculum includes both team and individual sports. Team sports include soccer, basketball, field hockey, wiffleball and more. Our PE teacher also conducts indvidual fitness drills which help improve balance, cardiovascular strength, and eye - hand coordination. We also teach classes on nutrition.
Music and Dance - Our classes focus on teaching each student the process of making music through various instruments as well as movement through dance. Students are encouraged to explore their individual interests and learn to enjoy and appreciate all that music and dance can bring to their world.
Visual Arts classes provide the opportunity for creative expression allowing each student to develop increased self-esteem through participation in the art-making process. Madonna focuses on painting, collage creation, printmaking, and pottery.
THERAPIES
Behavior Therapy - A behavior specialist works closely with the classroom teachers and our families to promote appropriate behavior in all our students. Each class is seen weekly to teach social skills and etiquette using methods and curriculum that is geared for each age and skill-level.
Speech & Language Therapy target each student’s individual communication needs. Our goal for each student is to be an effective and confident communicator. Areas of focus include language comprehension and expression, speech sounds, fluency and use of augmentative communication devices when needed.
Occupational Therapy works on a wide variety of skills including self-help skills (dressing, grooming and hygiene), fine motor skills (handwriting, manual dexterity), gross motor skills (balance, coordination) and muscle strengthening (upper and lower extremity, hand, and core).
Monarch Adult Program
Our Monarch Program is designed to serve Adults who have graduated high school or have surpassed the skills taught in our lower school. The Monarch Program offers three advancing tiers which focus on independent living, pre-employment, and job preparation skills, employment and community engagement.
LCE WBL CEC
Life Centered Eduation focuses on teaching independent living skills. These skills include proper use of home appliances, meal planning, food preparation and grocery shopping. We teach use of money, social skills and community safety.
Work Based Learning focuses on using their social and job readiness skills in the community. Trainees work with job coaches and participate in un-paid internships with local companies and schools.
Continuing Education Class offered on both a full and part time basis. Focus is on reinforcement of job skills, production and management of goods and participation in various community social activities.
Our adults in the CEC Program practice their learned skills by participating in our Monarch Market. The market sells delicious “take and bake” frozen meals, beautiful art and pottery all prepared and created in-house by our adults. They manage the prep, cooking, inventory and sale of the items. Funds raised through the sale of these items helps to support the adult program.

Benefits include improvement in muscular strength, coordination, self-esteem, and fostering creative expression and self-advocacy.

Fundraising Events 2021-2022
Madonna is blessed with a supportive community. We hold various events throughout the year which help to fund our general operating expenses and contribute to our scholarship, tuition, and academic programs. These fundraisers provide a chance for our donors, volunteers, and community businesses to sponsor and/or participate in our events, learn more about our school and meet some of our incredible Madonna students and adults.
We extend our appreciation and thanks to the many wonderful sponsors, volunteers and donors who participated in our fundraising events this year. We attribute our success to you. For more information on future events, check our website, social media or contact our office.

Hearing about what they do in our community is one thing but getting to be there in person and volunteer alongside the students and seeing the impact was an incredible experience. Our firm is looking forward to more opportunities for us to regularly volunteer and serve at MLC.”

Scholarships – Madonna’s scholarship program includes several funds designed to help families of students that need our programs but are financially unable to afford our tuition. We have four established scholarship funds. All scholarships are partial tuition awards.
Sister Mary Mark Graf Scholarship – Established in memory of one of our Founding Sisters who also served as Executive Director. This is given to a family who is experiencing a sudden hardship.
Sister Ruth Ann Scholarship – Established in memory of one of our Founding Sisters, given to a family who exhibits the true spirit of Madonna.

Purpose Impact Vision
Madonna had a busy and productive 2021-2022 School Year! Thanks to supporters like you, we can continue to offer and expand the much needed educational and social programs to our students and adults at Madonna. What an impact you have made! Here are a some highlights from this past year.
OUR NEW HEALTH & FITNESS CENTER
Our new C & M Fitness Center is close to completion and should be operational by the time this report is printed! A special thanks to Gries Family Foundation, Day Foundation, Assisi Foundation, Shelby County Commissioner, ATC Fitness, some very special friends of Madonna and all those who participated in our Move for Madonna fundraiser. You made this vision a reality! Our students and adults will now have a customized place to work out, improving their overall health and fitness while learning skills they can transfer into their homes and at local gyms!
HARBOR CHASE OF GERMANTOWN BECOMES A NEW WORKPLACE COMMUNITY PARTNER
One of our goals at Madonna as our students become adults is to teach them not only independent living skills but provide opportunities for vocational training. We partner with local businesses who may be a good fit to train/employ our adults. This year Harbor Chase of Germantown (an assisted living community) became our newest partner. They join some of our other great business partners, such as Germantown Commissary, MemPops, St. Agnes, Soccer Shots , Corky’s and Great American Cookie Company! Every one of our business partners say our Madonna Adults are some of the best trainees and employees they have ever had!
NEW TECHNOLOGY FOR OUR STUDENTS
A big thanks to Regions Bank Foundation, Lichterman Loewenberg Foundation and Elaine & Tom Edwards for their grants to purchase much needed new technology for our classrooms! The use of Smartboards, iMacs and iPads are critical in providing interactive lessons for our students. These tools enable our teachers to offer challenging, individualized lesson plans for each of our students, allowing them to progress at their own pace. Technology changes rapidly, therefore Madonna is always in need of new and/or upgraded technology as new tools become available.
OUR STUDENT GARDEN CONTINUES TO FLOURISH
Our garden has become an integral part of our school program. Our students have learned how to grow vegetables, herbs and flowers and are taught the importance of various insects. Our garden is now nationally certified and registered by Monarch Watch as an official Monarch Waystation. The garden serves as a wonderful outdoor classroom. Benefits have proven to be educational, social, physical and behavioral for our students and adults. Thanks to Germantown Garden Club, Leadership Germantown, Lichterman Loewenberg Foundation, Whole Foods Foundation and the many volunteers who enable us to keep our Garden flourishing year after year!
EXPANDED ART PROGRAM
Our students and adults produce amazing art and pottery that we sell throughout the year and on our website. Special thanks to St. Mary’s Episcopal School who awarded us an art grant which allowed us to purchase a second kiln! We appreciate their continued support of our Art Unbound project through their Community Funding program. Art provides the opportunity for creative expression allowing each student to develop increased self-esteem as well as improving fine motor skills and manual dexterity. We are so grateful to be able to offer this program to our students and adults.
MADONNA SUMMER CAMPS ARE ALL ABOUT INCLUSIVENESS
When our school year ends, our summer camps begin. This summer, we had record numbers attend! Our Camp Connect serves ages 4 and up and our Monarch Camp serves an older age group (18+). Community volunteers joined our camp leaders in making these weeks both fun and educational for all. This year typical siblings and friends were able to join in the fun. We also employed two of our Madonna adults, Rachel Krug and Katie Olsen who served as Camp Connect counselors. It was a wonderful, inclusive community experience for all!
Madonna relies on the support of our donors, foundations, community businesses and volunteers. We could not operate and fund this school without your support. Whether you provide your time, talent or resources, please know you are making a tremendous difference in the lives of these beautiful children and adults.
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

ANIQA HOSSAIN - 1989-2022
Aniqa attended Madonna for 9 years. She loved being around all of her friends at MLC the most. She loved cooking, and serving her friends at all school lunches. Meeting new friends and making connections, was one of her favorite things.
It is with great sadness that we share that Aniqa passed July, 2022. Her family said “ Aniqa spread love around as if it was going out of style. She loved everyone and everything about Madonna. We will miss her beautiful smile and shining presence.
Congrats to all of our Madonna Alumni who are successfully living their best life in many ways We want to hear about the exciting things you are doing! Please email your information and photos to labart@madonna-learning.org to keep us informed.
