The college selection process can be very overwhelming. Even if you have an idea of where you want to apply, the entire process itself is still quite stressful — whether it is the pressure of getting accepted or getting enough aid to help you pay for your education, etc. — there seem to be many issues to make you lose sleep.

We will come across large universities and some small colleges that have less students than your high school. You will find highly technical schools, liberal arts colleges, design schools, etc.— some tucked away in remote areas, and others that are located within a large city. Prestige and brand recognition are important, but the selection process should go beyond that. It is always smart to look at options that you may have never even considered. So why aren’t the “ultra selective” schools included in this book? Our objective is to uncover schools and programs that may not be the obvious choices for most people — the schools or programs that are often overlooked. There is no point in “discovering” schools that are already so well known, unless there is a distinctive program that makes it really special and noteworthy. The schools in GEMS are included not just because of their superb education. Some of the colleges in GEMS have the lowest tuition rates in the country. Our journey will take us to Disneyworld. In Orlando we will ﬁnd the Rosen College of Hospitality Management, one of the premier schools in the world, and part of the University of Central Florida. While at Disney, Mickey Mouse may have a special treat for our college plans.

How can we have a fun vacation without a visit the historic French Quarter in New Orleans? The University of New Orleans is one of the top schools in Naval Architecture/ Marine Engineering as well as Bioinformatics, where they have a sophisticated Bioinformatics & Machine Learning Lab.

We will ski in the Big Sky Resort in Montana, which is only 45 minutes away from Bozeman, home to Montana State University, which offers a highly FinancialsophisticatedEngineering major, one of only a handful available in the entire world.

We will tour The Alamo in San Antonio,Texas and visit a small liberal arts school with a strong focus in Finance — Trinity University. A few hours north we will stop by Baylor University to visit the modern Hankamer School of Business, where you can concentrate in Professional Sales, a ﬁeld of utmost importance.

Of course we have to go to New York City, the capital of world. From there, we will cross the Hudson River to Hoboken, NJ and stop by the Stevens Institute of Technology. There are not many programs in the world that prepare you better to be a high-earning quant (Wall St. analyst) than the Quantitative Finance program at Stevens. We will also stop by the John Jay College of Criminal Justice (CUNY), a top program in Criminology and Security.

We will visit Rocket City USA (Huntsville, Alabama), home to one of the best Aerospace Engineering programs in the world, and a growing industrial hub where Blue Origin (A Jeff Bezos company) just opened a brand new plant to manufacture rocket engines. We cannot forget a visit to Boston. Just outside of Boston, in Wellesley, MA we will ﬁnd Babson College. No other school in the U.S. has a higher focus on entrepreneurship than Babson. Our expedition will take us to Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, a short drive from SD School of Mines, one of the top STEM schools in country. We will travel a bit north to the University of North Dakota, which offers one of the highest-paying degrees (Bachelors in Data Science) at one of the lowest costs.

We will go cheer for the famous Demon Deacons at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. WFU is the smallest among the schools that compete at the highest level of college athletics. Its Economics Program is the envy of many across the nation.

We will go surfing in beautiful La Jolla, California, home to UCSan Diego, where students actually surf in between classes. UCSD is a globally-renowned university in many fields. It is the first school in the world to create a Department of Cognitive Science.We will enjoy the breathtaking forests of southern Tennessee, home to Sewanee: The University of the South. This top liberal arts college is nestled in 13,000 acres of woodland, and its architecture resembles a medieval European castle. The acceptance rate of Sewanee graduates that apply to Business, Law & Medical schools is about 2x the national average.[40]

We will visit Dayton, Ohio, the hometown of the Wright Brothers, where they designed their ﬁrst airplane. The University of Dayton stands out because it has the largest undergrad Student Managed Investment Fund with Assets Under Management worth $35 Million USD. We will meet with the Oracle of Omaha in Nebraska and visit the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, which has created one of the most unique Honors Programs in the country, where students learn business, computation, and develop real software projects with companies. We will “encounter” some hurricanes in our visit to Ann Arbor, Michigan, home to one of the best universities in the world, where you can study Engineering related to Meteorology or Global Warming.

We will go hiking in the famous rocks of New Mexico, on our way to Albuquerque, home of the University of New Mexico, where you can concentrate in Landscape Architecture, part of the outstanding School of Architecture & Planning

We will relax in the beautiful desert of Arizona and stop by Arizona State University in Tempe. This school offers one of the most advanced Human Systems Engineering programs in the country.

Of course we will take in many sites in Chicago and continue south to UrbanaChampaign. The University of Illinois has arguably the most unique Computer Science program in the country, where you can combine CS with many fields — Think of CS & Advertising. This course is an opportunity for students to learn more advanced methodologies in computational biology.By examining a variety of biological questions that are often addressed with computational pipelines, modeling, or simulation, students will get in-depth experience with important computational concepts (including: abstraction, algorithms, automation, logic, and problem solving). This includes the study of complex biological systems, such as projecting biological responses to climate or ecosystem change, quantifying spatial biodiversity hotspots, evaluating time series data for populations, and computing evolutionary parameters from genomic datasets. Students will also get experience with computer programming in the R statistical language and Python. Additional biological topics may include: spatial ecology, including species distribution modeling, community assemblage and dissimilarity matrices, population simulations, classiﬁcation with machine learning, and bioinformatics with genomic data. Residents of each one of the 50 states have access to a high-level education at public universities, some of which rank among the best in the world. From a sticker price perspective (ie: not including any scholarships, grants, etc.) paying in-state tuition rates allows students to save a significant amount of money in education, as compared to private universities. But there is a fundamental difference within the public university system across the country — in-state tuition rates can vary tremendously between states. For Pennsylvaniaexample,andFlorida have some of the best public colleges in the country, but some residents in Pennsylvania pay 4x what Florida residents pay, which equates to a difference of about $15K per year — an astronomical amount. Cryptographic codes and ciphers play a key role in the protection of information and modern communications. This course examines the central topics in cryptography (the art of designing codes and ciphers) and cryptanalysis (the art of breaking codes and ciphers). Students ﬁrst explore historical encryption schemes such as Caesar's cipher and substitution ciphers. They then investigate modern techniques including secret key schemes such as DES and AES and Public key methods such as RSA and Elliptic Curves.
