THE SYMBOTICS PROJECT

Climate Speculative Fictions

UMICH | ARCH 562

Instructor: Kathy Velikov

Partner: Fernando Rosas

Honing in on developing a solution that does not aim to offer utopia or dystopia, but rather presents a middle ground where opposing actor networks can co-exist. Sympoiesis, or making-with, rather than autopoiesis, or self-making proves more conducive to the kind of thinking that would provide a means to building a more livable future.

Exploring the possibilities of creating a new world where biology, intelligent machines, and systems can begin to co-exist and co-evolve as the landscape gets hybridized with responsive technologies allows the diegetic prototype to better process and respond to the variables and multi-scale inputs from their environment. Ultimately, this project speculates on what AI technology and bio composite 3D printing can offer for future practice. It raises questions about sustainability, alternative building methods, social, and political implications along with where the architectural profession could move as global warming continues.

UMICH | ARCH 672

Instructor: Claudia Wigger + Craig Borum

Partner: Fernando Rosas + Haiyu Zheng

An experimental housing project that draws inspiration from other surrounding projects, Detroit’s historical events, and our own group interest on form and ecological design. This project takes into consideration the user’s experiences, health, and wellbeing, while also rethinking methods for how designers can reduce, reuse, and recycle materials and ideas to generate new and exciting projects in regard to housing for the masses. Moreover, the Detroit site inspired reactions to the ongoing issues and historical framework of the Arts district.

Three experimental housing types encompass the site. One representing a more modern method of living in the form of a row house, the second reusing the excavated site and maximizing thermal insulation called the earth home, and the third resembling a tree house incrementally developed through prefabricated unit types. Our conceptual ideas can be viewed from the materials applied to the additive figures and fixtures that incorporate each intricate spatial layout.

AUTO-DISSEMINATION

UMICH | ARCH 552

Instructor: Perry Kulper

Fasion + Food Industries

Auto-Dissemination analyzes the juxtaposition between trends and advertisements within the world of the supermarket food industry and fast fashion industry in efforts to look ‘behind the curtain’ and structure relationships between three key issues involving social inequity, unfair labor practices, and waste. Representationally explored through various design methods including analogic, automatistic, gestural, and metaphorical thinking led to the development of a composite drawing. Quasi real and quasi fake critical fragments expand through multiple temporalities and split geographies, relating to the globalization and ubiquity of the supermarket and fast fashion realm.

041 REFLEXIVE MORPHOLOGIES

Developing the 3D model by honing in on key aspects of the supermarket and treating them analogously as a fashion show allowed overlaps whithin each industry to come to fruition. Each image compounds one or more of the aformentioned issues in effort to represent the negative side of globalization. Labor practices, social inequality, and waste are the backbone of consumerism at the expense of many individuals and the planet at large.

SONIC ECOLOGIES

Thesis

UMICH | ARCH 662

Instructor: Cyrus Penarroyo

This is the development of the current Thesis course. The body of research constructs and deconstructs negative and positive reciprocities between sound and the built environment. Ultimately, the research stitches various landscapes together that are only in service of the design methods explored.

These forms are hypothesized to produce foundations for growth towards more healthful design tactics as one can gauge a better understanding around the sonic shape of our environment. It aims to decenter humancentric ideologies by working in conjunction with flora and fauna.

Analyzing soundscapes and optimizing their spatial configurations could expand the scalability in environmental planning and form production that betters the quality of life in our social and natural habitats.

Spectrograms are coded through Python to extract the Hertz and Decibels of each sound recording in addition to creating a visual aid that represents sound. That data is then imported into Houdini, a node based software, to produce audio reactive forms and soundscapes. Finally those models are translated into grasshopper to run through performance algorithms and further analyzes the impact of sound in the built environment.

SPECIATED

SpeculativeTypologies+Parts

UMICH | ARCH 509

Instructor: Perry Kulper

Speciated asks fundamental questions about what characteristics might contribute to spatial make up; it augments known epistemological, and specifically categorical models; and pries open questions about how authorship takes place in spatial realms.

These projects focus on issues and operations linked to hybridity and operate as an experimental think tank in the form of digital design research to explore varied agencies of architecture and its education.

Probing a handful of questions that surround provocative topography, these projects respond to distribution purposes, negotiation of material and spatial states, and aim to open up a new discourse around the spatio-material realm.

Each Project was developed within one/two weeks after the brief.

ADV. COMPUTATIONAL GEOMETRY

Optimization, mesh relaxation, etc.

UMICH | ARCH 709

Instructor: Mania Meibodi

The intersection of computational design and digital fabrication has changed how we design, analyze, and construct our built environment. Computational geometry is at the core of computational design and digital fabrication processes, from the initial form-finding stages to the actual construction. It is about algorithms and computational techniques, which can be stated in terms of geometry.

Large scale 3-D printing is at a tipping point in building construction. This technology not only enables limitless customization but also for designs of greater intricacy. Computational Geometry explores and develops algorithms that create an architecture of unimaginable forms, intricate geometries, lightweight parts with minimal material, and entirely new spatial articulation. The main focus include algorithms, data structures, geometric operations, digital design-to-fabrication workflows.

SPATIAL FRAGMENTS + DEEP DIAGRAMS

Speculative Architecture School

UMICH | ARCH 509

Instructor: Perry Kulper

Partners: Kael Fineout + Song Gao

Spatial fragments and deep diagrams is a project that proposes a new version of an architecture school. The work looks at studio, seminar, and lecture configurations and proposes new scenarios and possibilities that negotiate what we know as a school.

This project speculates on the idea of immersing students into architecture by mode of train, boat, and temporary relocation which promotes travel to various sites, cultural experiences, and promotes individual growth.

This school also speculates on the role of faculty and staff, taking inspiration from The AA by following the framework of a student led board.

RWU | ARCH 416

Instructor: Miguel Roldan

Ona De So is a multipurpose space that acts as a recreational center on select days and transforms into a nightclub on select evenings. Due to its position betweent he old and new city, the location shows promise to connect the dividing city line, inviting newcomers to explore the history surrounding this area.

Due to the historic significance of the site, the Preservation Society required the proposal to maintain the original facade on the main street of Ronda De Sant Antoni and Carrer De Valldonzella. The macro diagram (on the right) differentiates the topography, city layout, event spaces, and the Ona De So site.

2654 N. LAKEWOOD AVE Chicago,IL HealthyHousing

RWU | ARCH 214

Instructor: Ginette Castro

This building lays in a condensed city. The concept is centralized around the idea of movement. Promoting a healthier lifestyle, this design was inspired by MC Escher and the local state park, Starved Rock.. Stairs that lead everywhere and nowhere try to engage the user. The apartments playfully undulates to create a dynamic facade for users to ponder and explore. Finally, the use of different materials aim to create movement and transparency inspired by the artist Alejandro Otero’s kinetic optico work. The lattice inhabits various plant species that react to the sites elements (rain, sun, wind).
