The MSO’s award-winning Education Programs reach thousands of young people each year. From concerts to competitions to master classes and more, our partnerships with local schools build the foundation for students to have a lifelong relationship with music.
The MSO’s nationally recognized Up Close & Musical program has been bringing the power and beauty of classical music and professional musicians into classrooms since 1999! Through a series of school visits by the Hunt Quartet and other musicians, this program introduces students to the basic musical elements of melody, rhythm, form and expression in engaging ways. The yearlong curriculum is guided by academic standards for music and is designed for students in grades K–3 throughout Dane County. This program is offered at no charge to participating schools due to generous donor support.
Meet the Musician offers preschoolers a close encounter with MSO musicians and the instruments they play. This free program features a variety of instruments.

The Spring Young People’s Concert is designed to model a typical orchestral concert experience but includes learning supplements such as a conductor narrative, visual component and an inspiring performance by the winner of the MSO’s annual Bolz Young Artist Competition.

“As a high school student who moved to Wisconsin from Japan 18 months ago, performing for the audience and sharing my story in front of the TV camera was precious and very meaningful. There were many moments where I struggled to overcome the language barrier and cultural differences over the past year, but music always served as a bridge for me to connect with people. Standing under the spotlight for the Final Forte performance was the biggest moment in my life where I felt the power of music. I was able to connect with hundreds of people by sharing music, and I realized the reason why I wish to pursue my career as a musician.“
Okamoto , Final Forte finalist
