The unveiling of a new season is always a special time for me, and it being my 30th anniversary as music director of our incredible orchestra makes it all the more special. To have a chance to watch and guide the orchestra over these years into the amazing ensemble it has become has brought me great joy.
As an American born musician, educated in the US and whose career has been predominantly in this country, I wanted to begin the season with an all-American program. There are, of course, favorite pieces of mine scattered throughout the season like Copland’s Appalachian Spring , Schumann’s Piano Concerto , Mahler’s fifth symphony, and the Verdi Requiem , alongside gems including Dawson’s Negro Folk Symphony , Revueltas’ The Night of the Maya , and Jennifer Higdon’s Loco . I’m also very pleased to present conductor Kyle Knox in his Madison Symphony subscription concert debut. As always, we have a stunning array of guest artists including the return of Naha Greenholtz, Jonathan Biss, Joyce Yang, and Steven Isserlis, as well as debuts by Terrence Wilson and Rachid Bernal. With Cinco de Mayo falling on the same weekend as our final subscription concerts, I was inspired to do a concert featuring Spanish and Mexican composers and artists, including the first time a mariachi group, Mariachi Los Camperos, has appeared with our orchestra.
Our soloists for Christmas feature last summer’s Opera in the Park sensation tenor Limmie Pulliam and the gorgeous voice of soprano Evelyn Saavedra.
As you look through the brochure you will find some innovative approaches to our subscription concerts reaching out to our diverse community, welcoming everyone to experience great music live in the acoustical splendor of Overture Hall. And you even get to choose one of the main pieces we will perform during the season. So please come celebrate this 30-year milestone with me throughout the year, either as a subscriber or a single ticket buyer, and you’ll be part of the excitement one feels with the orchestra that just continues to grow with every concert you attend. Personally, I want to thank you for your support for me as well as the orchestra over the years. Your energy as an audience absolutely inspires our performances and helps us celebrate together the power and sustenance that great music brings to each and every one of us.

– MSO PATRONAaron Copland, Appalachian Spring
George Gershwin, Rhapsody in Blue
John Adams, The Chairman Dances: Foxtrot for Orchestra
This all-American concert features four composers whose music I’ve so enjoyed both conducting and listening to over the years. Copland’s Appalachian Spring is such a beloved work and distinctly American in character. Rhapsody in Blue is a piece I performed with orchestras years ago and is a perennial favorite. The Chairman Dances was a prequel to John Adams’ opera, Nixon in China , of which I had the privilege to conduct the world premiere performance. Howard Hanson’s Symphony No. 2 (Romantic) is way overdue for the MSO and our audiences to experience. In fact, I have received many requests to perform this work of great beauty and passion. And, of course, you won’t want to miss the MSO debut of the sensational pianist Terrence Wilson.

“I have heard a number of live and recorded orchestra performances led by world-famous conductors. This performance was superb. The conductor [Kyle Knox] was magnificent.”
– MSO PATRON
We begin with Leonard Bernstein, who was a major influence on Music Director John DeMain’s early life and career. Bernstein had a knack for bringing lighthearted populism into the concert hall. Though written in the late 1940s, Shostakovich’s first concerto makes use of traditional musical forms, including a famous Passacaglia, favored by composers like Bach 200 years earlier. Feared by violinists and loved by audiences, it was a hit from the day it was written and is one of the true masterpieces of the solo violin repertoire. The final work is Brahms’ G minor Piano Quartet , orchestrated by Schoenberg. These will be the MSO’s first ever performances of this remarkable work. Schoenberg took Brahms’ chamber work and transformed it into a kaleidoscope of 20th-century orchestral color, giving virtually every instrument the spotlight.

November brings two great staples of the symphonic repertoire, Mozart’s “Haffner” Symphony in our first performances in over twenty years, and another all-time favorite of mine, Schumann’s Piano Concerto . I am so looking forward to welcoming back the brilliant pianist Jonathan Biss who has a special affinity for this concerto. It is also with great excitement that we will perform William Dawson’s Negro Folk Symphony for the first time. This work, which was greeted with great acclaim when it was premiered under the baton of Leopold Stokowski in 1934, was all but forgotten until recently, and has been heralded as a masterpiece. Using Negro folk melodies and spirituals as its thematic source, the work is colorfully orchestrated and an absolute delight to listen to. I wanted to perform this work with the orchestra the minute I first heard it and so look forward to sharing it with you.

This month, I not only continue to celebrate my 30th anniversary season, but I celebrate a milestone birthday. I have chosen two desert island favorites of mine for the occasion and invite you to come celebrate with me. Joyce Yang played so wonderfully a few seasons ago, that I wanted to bring her back immediately. She will play one of the great piano concertos of Mozart. Mozart is considered the perfect pairing with Gustav Mahler, so I have done just that.
Mahler’s great fifth symphony, with its famous Adagietto movement extracted for the movie Death in Venic e, is a colossal work for a very large orchestra. The Adagietto movement is scored only for harp and strings and is of exquisite beauty. This will be the MSO’s second performance of this masterwork. Treat yourself to the sonic experience of a Mahler symphony and the sublime perfection of a Mozart piano concerto.

Well, you are about to play a major role in determining the outcome of this concert! I wanted this to be a popular symphonic work, so I chose three works for you to decide on: Beethoven’s Pastorale Symphony , Dvořák’s New World Symphony , and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade I also left a chance for you to write in your own suggestion. It will be fun to see how this turns out. The first half of the concert opens with a fun work titled Loco by Jennifer Higdon, followed by the return of another favorite artist of mine, Steven Isserlis, who has enjoyed a long and distinguished career as one of the world’s foremost cellists. He will perform Kabalevsky’s second cello concerto, a premiere for the MSO. SUBSCRIBE AND VOTE!

The Verdi Requiem is one of those works that moves you to the very core of your being, combining spine-tingling power with moments of sublime beauty. The Madison Symphony Chorus joins us under the direction of Beverly Taylor, who has a very special love for this piece and will inspire the chorus to great heights. Two very special people who have graced us with their talents over the years, soprano Alexandra LoBianco and bass Kyle Ketelsen join debuting artists tenor Jonathan Burton and mezzosoprano Margaret Gawrysiak (also of last summer’s Opera in the Park) as our soloists. Their glorious voices are alone worth the price of admission. I so love this piece and am so grateful to be able to perform it during my anniversary year.

José Pablo Moncayo, Huapango
Cinco de Mayo served as an inspirational springboard for this unique concert celebrating both Spanish and Mexican music. The concert opens with José Pablo Moncayo’s Huapango, a lively and joyful tribute to the popular music of the Mexican state of Veracruz. Manuel de Falla’s gorgeously orchestrated Nights in the Gardens of Spain featuring the debut of young Mexican pianist Rachid Bernal will immerse us in Spanish Impressionism. Silvestre Revueltas is one of the giants among Mexican composers, and I am very excited to introduce to you his suite from the movie La Noche de Los Mayas, featuring a multimedia presentation of Mayan art. And finally, a great mariachi ensemble Mariachi Los Camperos will play selections of Mexican songs with the Madison Symphony.
