MMSD Summer School Enrichment Deadline: May 21

MMSD Enrichment classes are open to children who reside in the Madison Metropolitan School District and who are entering grades 1- 8 in Fall 2012. The curriculum is designed to provide expanded learning opportunities and offer experiences in areas that may not be part of the regular school year program. Interested students should be self-motivated and committed to participation. Please include your child’s MMSD ID number on the registration form. The registration deadline is Monday, May 21. Please note: no classes held on July 4. If you have questions regarding MMSD Summer Enrichment, please call Laurie at (608) 663-5201.

MMSD CLASS DESCRIPTIONS - 663-5201 ALL AROUND MATH

Uncover the magic and wonder of math. Build and connect your knowledge with real-life and hands-on problem solving.

ART EXPRESSIONS

If you love art class, you can enjoy painting, drawing, crafts and more-just like during the regular school year.

BOOK CLUB EXTRAVAGANZA

This class is for children who love books. Explore different kinds of books and share your love of reading with others. Uncover new and exciting worlds through reading and fun.

DANCE TO THE MUSIC

Singing and dancing of course! Learn new songs and movement to music. Learn choreographed dance/movements and create your own dance/moves.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Learn to take digital pictures and build a virtual collage or photo album of your work.

DRAMA DESIGN

Integrate storytelling, movement, music, art and drama to create an original production.

EXPLORING TODAY’S MATH

Take a close look at how numbers are part of almost everything we do. From cell phones and computers to the stock market ... explore all the places there are numbers in our world and what it all means to you.

FIELD BIOLOGY

Visit a variety of habitats to study the interdependence of organisms, use scientific datagathering equipment, and learn to make accurate observations in the field. The class visits a different site daily. Please note that this class meets 4 hours per day.

RECYCLE IT!

We all know that paper and plastic are recyclable. What about tires, cooking oil, and blue jeans? Learn more about recycling, what is made from recycled materials and what a difference it makes for our planet.

SCIENCE ALL AROUND

Discover the many ways science impacts our world through fun and exciting hands-on individual and group problem-solving science activities.

SCIENCE WIZARDS

Participate in many new and exciting activities and experiments. Explore the wonders of science - chemistry, physics, and the insect world.

SPOKEN WORD, SPOKEN HEART

THINK WORLD CULTURES

Do you wonder what school is like for children in other countries...what games they play, what fashions are in, what sports they like? Learn more about and explore what life is like for children around the world that are just like you.

UPSIDE DOWN-INSIDE OUT

Engage in a variety of gymnastic skills and aerobic exercise for overall physical fitness. Work on balance beam, uneven bars, floor and vault. Please note: this class runs six weeks.

SUMMER MUSIC EXPERIENCE

Summer Music Experience is offered every July to music students grades 4-8, unless other wise indicated. Chorus, band, orchestra, jazz and computer music are offered July 9-July 20, and there is a grand performance on July 20 involving all students. Please note the dates of this program. The instrumental component of this course requires prior experience with the preferred instrument. Courses are listed below that are included in the Summer Music Experience Program. Please choose four - one for each time. Advanced Fiddlin Strings For string players levels 6 and higher in the Strings Festival. Advanced Orchestra For string players levels 6 and higher in the Strings Fesitval. Band For students who have had at least a semester of experience with a concert band instrument. Basic Fiddlin Strings For string players through level 5 in the Strings Festival. Basic Orchestra For string players through level 5 in the Strings Fesitival. Cast Sing a lead or supporting role in the musical. Choir For all who like to sing. Computers in Music Students compose their own music using software. Crew Create set design, props, sound, costumes, etc. for the musical performance. Jazz For band students and string bass players currently in grades 6-8 and guitarists and pianists with at least two years of private lessons to handle the advanced repertoire. Pit Orchestra Provides the instrumental music for the musical.
