Saturday marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The attacks on September 11, 2001 remain the deadliest terror attacks in world history, claiming more than 2,900 lives and causing countless injuries and long-term health problems for tens of thousands of civilians and first responders.

The 20th anniversary of 9/11 will no doubt evoke responses that span the emotional spectrum. Sadness may dominate such responses, but the anniversary of 9/11 also is a great time to reflect on the efforts of first responders. The time-line of a day that must never be forgotten

By STAFF REPORTS NEW YORK CITY - On September 11, 2001—a clear, sunny, late summer day—al Qaeda terrorists aboard three hijacked passenger planes carried out coordinated suicide attacks against the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., killing everyone on board the planes and nearly 3,000 people on the ground. A fourth plane crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, killing all on board, after passengers and crew attempted to wrest control from the hijackers.

Below is a chronology of the events of 9/11 as they unfolded. All times are Central.

• 6:59 am – American Airlines Flight 11, a Boeing 767 with 92 people aboard, takes off from Boston’s Logan International Airport en route to Los Angeles.

• 7:14 am – United Airlines Flight 175, a Boeing 767 with 65 people aboard, takes off from Boston; it is also headed to Los Angeles.

• 7:19 am – Flight attendants aboard Flight 11 alert ground personnel that the plane has been hijacked; American Airlines notifies the FBI. • 7:20 am – American Airlines Flight 77 takes off from Dulles International Airport outside of Washington, D.C. The Boeing 757 is headed to Los Angeles with 64 people aboard.

• 7:40 am – Air traffic controllers at The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) alert North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD)’s Northeast Air Defense Sector (NEADS) about the suspected hijacking of Flight 11. In response, NEADS scrambles two fighter planes located at Cape Cod’s Otis Air National Guard Base to locate and tail Flight 11; they are not yet in the air when Flight 11 crashes into the North Tower.

• 7:41 am – United Airlines Flight 93, a Boeing 757 with 44 people aboard, takes off from Newark International Airport en route to San Francisco. It had been scheduled to depart at 8:00 am, around the time of the other hijacked flights.

• 7:46 am – Mohammed Atta and the other hijackers aboard American Airlines Flight 11 crash the plane into floors 93-99 of the North Tower of the World Trade Center, killing everyone on board and hundreds inside

• 7:47 am – Within seconds, NYPD and FDNY forces dispatch units to the World Trade Center, while Port Authority Police Department officers on site begin immediate evacuation of the North Tower.

• 7:50 am – White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card alerts President George W. Bush that a plane has hit the World Trade Center; the president is visiting an elementary school in Sarasota, Florida at the time.

• 8:03 am – Hijackers crash United Airlines Flight 175 into floors 75-85 of the WTC’s South Tower, killing everyone on board and hundreds inside the building • 8:24 am – The FAA notified NEADS of the suspected hijacking of Flight 77 after some passengers and crew aboard are able to alert family members on the ground.

• 8:31 am – Speaking from Florida, President Bush calls the events in New York City an “apparent terrorist attack on our country.”

• 8:37 am – Hijackers aboard Flight 77 crash the plane into the western façade of the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., killing 59 aboard the plane and 125 military and civilian personnel inside the building.

• 8:42 am – For the first time in history, the FAA grounds all flights over or bound for the continental United States. Over the next two-and-a-half hours, some 3,300 commercial flights and 1,200 private planes are guided to land at airports in Canada and the United States.

• 8:59 am – The South Tower of the World Trade Center collapses.

• 9:07 am – After passengers and crew members aboard the hijacked Flight 93 contact friends and family and learn about the attacks in New York and Washington, they mount an attempt to retake the plane.

In response, hijackers deliberately crash the plane into a field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, killing all 40 passengers and crew aboard.

• 9:28 am – The World Trade Center’s North Tower collapses, 102 minutes after being struck by Flight 11.

• 10 am – Mayor Rudolph Giuliani calls for the evacuation of Lower Manhattan south of Canal Street, including more than 1 million residents, workers and tourists, as efforts continue throughout the afternoon to search for survivors at the WTC site.

• 12 pm – At Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana, President Bush announces that U.S. military forces are on high alert worldwide.

The following places are national memorials that have been created for people to remember and honor those who perished in the 9-11 attacks on America.

The 9/11 Memorial

By STAFF REPORTS NEW YORK - Among the more indelible images to emerge on September 11, 2001 was the sight of two planes crashing into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center. Still photos and video footage of those planes flying into the Twin Towers were the first images of the attacks many Americans saw, and no one who watched events unfold that morning will ever forget those images.

Though both the North and South Towers fell on that day, today the site where each tower once stood is a serene retreat in the bustling lower Manhattan neighborhood that was shaken to its core on the day of the attacks. The 9/11 Memorial was designed by architect Michael Arad and landscape architect Peter Walker. The 9/11 Memorial and Museum notes that Arad and Walker’s proposal was chosen in a design competition that featured 5,201 submissions from 63 countries.

The 9/11 Memorial is located on the western side of the formal World Trade Center where the Twin Towers once

stood. Two enormous reflecting pools are part of the Memorial Plaza, which is where the North and South Towers once stood. The pools feature the two largest man-made waterfalls in North America.

Around the edges of the pools, the names of people who were killed in the 9/11 attacks in New York, the Pentagon, on Flight 93, and in the 1993 bombing at the World Trade Center are etched in bronze.

In recognition of the crash sites, 400 swamp white oak trees were selected from nurseries located in New York, Pennsylvania and near Washington, D.C. These trees are located throughout the Memorial Plaza, providing a peaceful respite separate from the surrounding city.

The Memorial Plaza also includes one Callery pear tree. That tree was discovered at Ground Zero weeks after the attacks and it was severely damaged. The tree, now known as the Survivor Tree, was nursed back to health by members of the New York City Parks and Recreation Department and returned to the World Trade Center site in 2010, where it still stands as an enduring symbol of resilience and perseverance.

The Flight 93 National Memorial

By STAFF REPORTS SHANKSVILLE, PA - a At 10:03 a.m. on September 11, 2001, the last of four planes that were hijacked earlier that morning crashed into a field near the town of Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The people behind the 9/11 attacks later claimed the hijackers who commandeered the plane intended to crash it into the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., but passengers and crew stormed the cockpit, prompting the hijackers to crash the plane into the field, which is less than 20 minutes’ flying time to Washington, D.C. The efforts of passengers and crew onboard Flight 93 were nothing short of heroic. Though everyone aboard the flight perished in the crash, the attack on the U.S. Capitol was thwarted, saving untold number of lives. All passengers and crew on board Flight 93 were awarded a Congressional Gold Medal on September 11, 2014.

The Flight 93 National Memorial is located in Stonycreek Township in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, roughly two miles north of Shanksville.

The memorial was opened to family members of the victims on September 10, 2015, and is now open to the public seven days a week, 365 days a year from sunrise to sunset, though visitors are urged to contact the Memorial in advance due to potential restrictions or closures related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In September 2005, the Flight 93 Advisory Commission, which included family members of the victims as well as design and art professionals and community and national leaders, chose a design proposal submitted by Paul Murdoch Architects and Nelson Byrd Woltz Architects from among 1,100 entries.

The Flight 93 National Memorial includes the Tower of Voices, a 93-foot-tall musical instrument that holds 40 wind chimes, one to represent each of the 40 passengers and crew members who perished in the crash. The tower is located on an oval concrete plaza that includes two curved concrete benches facing the opening of the tower. The tower is surrounded by concentric rings of white pines and deciduous plantings. A live webcam of the Tower of Voices can be viewed at https://www. flight93friends.org/plan-your-visit/webcams.

Visitors to the Flight 93 National Memorial also can visit the Memorial Plaza. The Memorial Plaza features the Wall of Names, which is made up of 40 white polished marble stones inscribed with the names of the passengers and crew who were aboard Flight 93 on 9/11. The Memorial Plaza extends one-quarter mile alongside the area where Flight 93 crashed. Visitors can walk along the Memorial Plaza and view the impact site, including a grove of eastern hemlock trees that were damaged by the crash. A gap in the tree line is still visible and serves as a lasting “scar” of the crash.

The Pentagon 9-11 Memorial

By STAFF REPORTS WASHINGTON D.C. - At 9:37 a.m. on September 11, 2001, five hijackers crashed American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia. All 53 passengers and six crew members perished in the crash, and an additional 125 military and civilian personnel on the ground were killed in the fire caused by the crash.

The hijacking of Flight 77 was part of the broader attack on 9/11, which remains the deadliest terrorist attack in world history. The Pentagon Memorial was created to honor the 184 people whose lives were lost at the Pentagon on 9/11, as well as their families and all those who sacrifice to protect and

preserve the freedom of Americans.

The design of the Pentagon Memorial was developed by architects Julie Beckman and Keith Kaseman. Their design was chosen from 1,100 submissions.

The Pentagon Memorial sits on two acres of land just outside where Flight 77 struck the building. The memorial includes 184 benches that are dedicated to each of the victims. The benches are organized in a timeline of their ages, stretching from the youngest victim, 3-year- Dana Falkenberg, to the oldest, 71-year-old John Yamnicky. Each bench is engraved with a victim’s name and arches over a shallow reflecting pool of water, lit from below. The benches for the

passengers who were aboard the plane at the time of the crash are positioned so visitors will face the sky when reading the victim’s name.

The benches dedicated to the victims who were inside the building are positioned so their names and the Pentagon are in the same view.

A curved wall known as the Age Wall also is a significant part of the memorial. The wall increases in height from 3 inches to 71 inches to represent the ages of the victims.

Eighty-five paperbark maple trees were clustered throughout the memorial, and these trees feature foliage that changes to orange and red each fall. The trees will eventually grow to 30 feet, providing a canopy of shade over the memorial.

This Patriot Day, there are many ways individuals can honor those who lost their lives on 9-11

By STAFF REPORTS MADISON - September 11, 2001, was a tragic day in American history. On that day, nearly 3,000 innocent lives were lost due to the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. as well as in rural Pennsylvania, where another plane en route for more destruction crash-landed.

The indelible images of the World Trade Center collapsing in flames with crowds running for safety, as well as the ensuing visions of heroes and citizens working together, have created a lasting impression.

While buildings have been repaired and new sites erected in the wake of the attacks, there are many ways to continue to honor the fallen. Patriot Day, which

takes place each year on September 11 to honor those who lost their lives in the 9-11 attacks, is one such example.

The following are a handful of ways that people can honor 9-11 victims and their families. · Celebrate local heroes by visiting or making donations of food or supplies to local firehouses and police stations. · Commemorate the events of 9-11 by observing moments of silence at key times throughout the day (Central time listed): 7:46 a.m, 8:03 a.m., 8:37 a.m., 8:59 a.m., 9:03 a.m., and 8:28 a.m. · Engage in service projects that can help your community, including its underserved individuals, like veterans. National Day of Service, which is the same day as Pa-

triot Day, asks people to do at least one good deed in honor of those who died on 9-11. · Make a trip to New York City and visit the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. · If you display a flag at your home or business, be sure to place it at half staff from sunrise to sunset to mourn the lives lost. · Share stories of the heroism and bravery of first responders with young children who may not have been alive in 2001. · Unite the country by promoting acceptance of and kindness to all people, regardless of religious or political beliefs. · Attend the 9-11 Observance events at Toyota Field in Madison this Saturday. MPD officers answered the call to help in NYC after 9/11 Looking back and reflecting on 9-11 twenty years later MADISON – Marcus Adams, today working as Detective Sergeant in Madison Police Department, was among the eight police employees who assisted in New York City after terrorist attacks on Sept.

11, 2001.

Although 20 years have passed, Adams readily remembers learning that he could volunteer in NYC. “Gosh, every cop in America wanted to go to New York to help out. I put my name in the hat right off the bat,” he said.

The Madison police employees who volunteered were Adams, Jim Cooke, Jason Fox, Clayton Jordan, the late Wayne Kamus, Trey Street, the late Adam Vaughn and Steve Wilkerson.

The Madison officers needed three patrol cars and a van to transport themselves and all their equipment. After an 18hour drive to NYC, the Madison officers went to the Javits Convention Center. “We showed our IDs to check in and got some rest. We got our assignments from the Javits center,” Adams said.

NYPD officers were surprised and thrilled that the Madison entourage came to help. A major difference exists between the atmosphere of police work, then and now. “It’s night and day. Everybody came together then,” Adams said.

The Empire State Building was their first assignment. “We worked regular shifts to relieve NYPD officers to give them a break. A couple (of us) checked IDs for employees,” Adams said.

The public could not enter because of bomb threats from overseas.

At this point, the Madison officers stayed at the Novatel motel and could see Times Square from their 14th-floor room.

Ground Zero was the saddest view that they witnessed. “People had written in dust around the perimeter . . . anger at Bin Laden or ‘Sorry for the loss,” Adams said. They found a deceased NY firefighter in full gear and a person’s leg.

“It was an in-your-face symbol of the emotion,” Adams said.

Contrasting to usual interaction, pedestrians walked up to the Madison officers and thanked them. “Lots of people thanking us and all of the public support, not normal is this job.”

The officers discussed returning to NYC but procrastinated until finally in October 2020. Jason Fox, Clayton Jordan and Adams visited to experience the Ground Zero Tour and 9/11 Memorial and Museum.

“My gosh. Listen . . . I thought the memorial was the footprint of the tower, but the actual footprint of the towers is open to walk around. When you down into the memorial,

“ I just want everybody to stand by their comment to never forget. ” you see the steel beams and look upward through the facade of a tower,” Adams said. They observed a crushed firetruck, photos of the murdered people and mementos from the towers.

Adams said approximately 2,977 people were killed and 6,000 injured.

“I was speechless. I’ve been trying to put some closure since we went,” Adams said. “They (the designers) nailed it. It’s an amazing place. If you

ever get a chance to go to the memorial, go. You’ll never regret it.”

“In my 36 years of this (police) work, our visit stands above all of the regular work. It was amazing to help out . . . something special and unique in my career. I’m proud to be a tiny dot in all of that.”

For Jason Fox, visiting the 9/11 memorials took him back “to remembering how the country was so together at the time in 2001. Everybody was together -- no matter what color or what political or sexual affiliation.”

However, that common bond has disintegrated.

“The way the world is today, everybody was their own personal self-agenda to care of themselves instead of worrying about other people,” Fox said.

NYC firefighters’ bravery on 9/11 still impresses Madison fire captain

It is still very relevant today as we look back on 9-11 twenty years later.

By GREGG PARKER Gregg.Parker@madison countyrecord.com MADISON – On the tenth anniversary of enemy attacks in New York City and Washington D.C., Captain Russ Kennington with Madison Fire and Rescue Department explained his assessment of first responders in rescue and recovery.

“How can anyone put on paper what Sept. 11, 2001, represents?” Kennington said.

“After all, can anyone really portray the unimaginable hatred of that

day? Can I, as a writer, adequately describe the desperation felt by many Americans as the events of that day unfolded? How can I possibly, on a piece of paper, show the acts of heroism that were exhibited by so many that morning?” he said.

Kennington, a career firefighter, admitted he was not trained as a writer, and he was unsure if he could document his personal views. However, he knew that he must try to express his thoughts.

At that time, the current generation of Americans grew up on Sept. 11, 2011, Kennington said. “I don’t think the average American had really realized, until then, how our planet had become one world. I can assure you that hardly anyone, outside of our intelligence community,

horror but also a look of disbelief. “I know (my face) did. It was hard to believe that what we were seeing could actually happen,” he said. “I can distinctly remember the desire to do something, anything, but being confronted with the simple fact that I couldn’t.

What I did know, as a firefighter, was that the New York City Fire Department could.”

“I remember the pride I felt for my profession as I saw the firefighters heading up the stairs of the twin towers,” Kennington said. “I recall thinking that, if I were still in those towers, these are the guys I would want coming to get me.”

“Many of the faces I was seeing ascend those stairs had already hugged or shook hands with their friends who were there, because they knew, deep down inside, that this was different and that they may not make it out alive.

Unlike the men who took those planes, these firefighters didn’t sign up to die that day,” he said.

Local events planned to honor first responders on 9-11

BY STAFF REPORTS MADISON - Each year Madison Fire and Rescue has led the way in keeping the memory alive of those who scarified their lives on 9-11 rushing to the aid of others. This year is no different.

Deputy Chief Brandy Williams has been coordinating the various ceremonies and 9-11 observances for many years. Some of those have included remembrance ceremonies at Madison Fire

Station 1 and a stair climb in Nashville.

Williams said the ceremonies have been “an honor to do” and called the experiences “humbling.”

This year, three events are planned for Madison where the public is invited and encouraged to attend.

“Our annual 9/11 ceremony will be held at Toyota Field this year,” Williams said. “The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept 11, and will take place on the baseball field. It is open to the public

That same evening the Honor Guard will conduct the presentation of colors just prior to the kickoff of the amputee softball game at Toyota Field, which will be held at 6:24 p.m.

Toyota Field will actually open at 2 p.m. the special night as the Rocket City Trash Pandas honor our heroes, both locally and nationally. The USA Patriots Amputee Team returns for the Tribute Night softball game and fireworks.

The USA Patriots is a non-profit organization, which brings athletic and veteran amputees together to promote the benefits of inclusive sport and therapeutic recreational activities.

The Lady Jets finished second in the girls division led

The Jets posted 85 points and an average of 16-minutes, 53.61 seconds in their victory. Luke Alverson, a freshman, was the top finisher for James Clemens as he finished tenth with a time of 16:36.60. The Jets placed three runners in the top 15 and their top five scorers finished in the top 26. Bob Jones took sixth place with 172 points and an average of 17:31.03. The Patriots were led by Ryan Bender. The senior Patriot finished seventh out of 235 runners with a finish time of 16:16.15.

The fourth grade student-athlete is already making a name for himself among the world of youth baseball as he was selected to represent Alabama in the 10U National All-State Select Championships scheduled for Nov. 20-22 in Marietta, Ga. The son of Brandon and Melissa Lee and a student at Lindsay Lane Christian Academy, Landon has played for the Knights South travel team and has skipped around the Southeast playing games throughout Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee as a pitch-

“I feel good about being named to the team and I was a little surprised as I knew there were other good players that could be chosen,” said Landon.

MADISON – The feeling is hard to describe. But when it happens, you know it.

For the Rocket City Trash Pandas, the feeling has happened early and often in their inaugural season.

Over the first 98 games, Rocket City has launched 146 home runs, far and away the most in Double-A South.

Some just barely clear the fence, others leave ballparks entirely. But they all have that feeling.

“I like to say it’s like hitting a pillow. You don’t even feel it. You can’t replicate it in batting practice,” said Mitch Nay, whose 22 home runs lead Double-A South.

“It’s like you hit nothing.

You’ll know when you hit them; they come off at a different speed. I look up into the window of where the ball is flying and it’s at a different speed.”

“As soon as you hit the ball, you don’t even feel it on the bat because you just hit it,” said Luis Aviles Jr., with 15 home runs in 54 games. “It doesn’t feel like anything. There’s no ballpark that can hold us when we get that feeling off the bat.

“For me, the feeling is more like the emotional feeling after you hit it,” MacKinnon said. “Once you see the ball go over the wall, there’s nothing like rounding the bases.”

“When you hit the ball on the sweet spot, you don’t even feel it,” catcher Michael Cruz added. “That feeling that you put in the work before and go the result in the game, it feels amazing.”

At the plate, I have base hits and some homeruns while batting fourth in the lineup.”

The atmosphere leads to emotions, especially playing in front of a packed Toyota Field crowd, where the Trash Pandas have uncorked 84 of their 146 home runs.

With lights flashing and the crowd cheering, it is part of the feeling that can’t be replicated.

That feeling is infectious in the

“We’ve got a lot of guys on this team that can hit,” Nay said. “It’s almost like it’s contagious. They hit one then I hit one, it’s been like that the past few weeks. It definitely picks the dugout up.”

“Hitting is contagious,” added Aviles Jr. “Once you hit one, the guy behind you wants to do it.

Whatever it takes to get the team fired up. The fans here are also a great motivation for us.”

For the Trash Pandas to keep dazzling fans with their great run at the plate, they will need to keep swinging for the fences in the final stretch.

All-Star in the 6U division as part of the Madison Baseball Association at Palmer Park. He transferred to travel ball a season later and currently hangs his cleats among the 10U Knights South, which includes five players from Madison among its roster. Landon is regarded as possibly the best player on the team.

“My goal is one day play in Major League Baseball for my favorite team the Atlanta Braves,” said Landon. “I practice a lot along with taking hitting and pitching lessons.

I sometimes bring a friend over to my house for pitching practice as I have a pitcher’s mound in the backyard.”

Travels for sports is also part of the Lee family in a secondary way as Landon’s eight-year old sister also plays travel softball.

A straight A student in the classroom, Landon is also a strong student of the game. He watches Major League games on television and he and his parents have attended numerous Trash Pandas games at Toyota Field. Studying the game and listening to coaching has made him a solid hitter, a consistent fielder in the field and an accurate pitcher.

All of those athletic skills have led him to be among elite players in an elite format of baseball in a national event.

NEWS Murder trial for 2016 Madison shooting delayed to March over COVID concerns

By ERIC FLEISCHAUER ATHENS — The coronavirus pandemic that shut down jury trials for half of 2020 is again causing disruptions, most recently resulting in the delay of a Limestone County capital murder trial that had been scheduled for this month.

Limestone County Circuit Judge Chad Wise on Tuesday ordered the continuance of the trial of Dacedric Deshun Ward, 26. Ward is charged with murdering 18-year-old Jason Ender West during a robbery in the parking lot of a Sonic restaurant the day after Christmas in 2016.

Wise’s order said he was pushing the trial back “in light of the recent developments concerning the delta variant in the COVID-19 pandemic and the potential consequences the pandemic may have on the defendant’s Sixth Amendment right” for his jury to represent a cross-section of the community.

Limestone County District Attorney Brian Jones on Wednesday said the recent increase in COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations has concerned prospective jurors.

Those concerns, he said, prompted Wise to delay the Ward trial.

“We were supposed to try it on the 20th, and there have been some issues with the jury panel because they’re asking about COVID,” Jones said. “(Wise) was concerned about that particular case with the panel because we’ve actually had a panel

where we had the same thing happen. So out of an abundance of caution he moved that one to March.”

The trial is now scheduled for March 21, 2022.

Earlier in the pandemic, the Alabama Supreme Court suspended all jury trials from March 16, 2020, to Sept. 14, 2020.

West was shot at the Sonic on County Line Road and Madison police conducted the initial investigation.

According to an affidavit by Madison police Investigator Michael Enfinger, surveillance video from the restaurant showed a Nissan Maxima, later determined by police to be occupied by Ward, parking near a picnic table.

At 3 p.m., “West walked up to the Nissan and talked through the driver door window. After talking for a few minutes, West was shot in the chest,” Enfinger wrote. “He jerked forward and clutched his chest suddenly. He fell against the picnic table then to the ground.”

Police tracked down the Nissan Maxima by calling the last number that West had called on his cellphone. They reached Trevor Davis Cantrell, who initially admitted only to seeing the shooting.

Cantrell’s girlfriend said Ward had been using the car earlier in the day, according to police.

After being arrested, according to Enfinger, Cantrell described his involvement in the shooting.

Cantrell, 23, was also indicted for capital murder. His trial date has not been set.

Sain said he followed Bass over an 8-foot barbed wire fence and caught him about 200 yards away.

“He quit running and gave up,” Sain said. Allen declined to say if Bass was armed when apprehended.

Allen said the driver of the pickup carrying Bass has not been charged.

“We don’t have the driver in custody at this time,” he said. “Our main focus was getting Bass. We can always go back later and get the driver. … It took some very creative police work and leg work to make the arrest.”

He said cooperation from Huntsville Police Department, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the U.S. Marshal’s Service and the Madison and Morgan district attorneys’ offices was vital in capturing Bass.

Allen said the department’s vice/narcotics unit traveled to Interstate 65 Exit 334 and observed the suspect’s vehicle as it passed the Priceville/Decatur exit traveling northbound.

He said the vehicle exited from I-65 North onto I-565 East toward Huntsville, and “we believed they noticed our unmarked police vehicles following them.”

“The vehicle came to an abrupt stop at County Line Road. Bass jumped out, and the vehicle kept going,” Allen said. “Our officers converged on the wooded area where Bass ran. Our fear was that we would lose Bass. He was our primary target.”

MADISON - A Decatur man accused of killing and robbing two men on Aug. 19 is in the Morgan County Jail after he was apprehended following a tip from U.S. marshals and a short foot chase just off Interstate 565 and County Line Road near the Madison city limits last week.

Ricardo S. Bass, 40, is charged with capital murder in the shooting deaths of Mark Allen Nicholson, 54, of Hartselle, and Jeffrey Carden, 31, of Huntsville.

Nicholson was gunned down and robbed at a Wavaho gas station in Northwest Decatur while refueling his truck, police said, and Carden was killed 30 minutes earlier in Huntsville.

Authorities said the slayings appear to be unrelated except for the identity of the suspect.

Morgan County sheriff’s spokesperson Mike Swafford said Bass is in “administrative housing away from the general population” at the jail.

He is being held without bond.

At his initial appearance in district court Wednesday, Bass was granted indigent status and attorneys Catherine Carter and Christy Miller were appointed to represent him.

A preliminary hearing has been set for Sept. 21 at 1:30 p.m.

At a news conference Wednesday morning, Decatur police Chief Nate Allen said the U.S. Marshal’s Service notified his department and Huntsville police about 7:15 p.m.

Dr. Nichols to speak at MCC luncheon

The Madison Newcomers and Neighbors Club will meet Thursday, Sept 9 at the Hogan Family YMCA. Social time is at 9:30 a.m.

Principal Carmen Taylor-Tubbs called each “new” student to the front to await their name and assigned “House” display on a screen. The kids celebrated each time the chosen student learned their new family and got a beaded necklace aligned with their House color. This House tradition at Mill Creek and other schools is a way to help students feel connected and build relationships with students and teachers outside their assigned class. Each of the six Houses has a color theme and a character trait.

MADISON – Madison officials postponed until this week the full closure of Balch & Gillespie intersection last week due to the remnants of Hurricane Ida paying a visit to the area.

The intersection of Gillespie Rd and Balch Rd will be closed to traffic starting this week through the end of the month. Closure will allow for construction of the intersection roundabout.

City officials ask motorists to be aware of this roadwork and follow the posted detour.

I say ‘naturalized’ because the pond below was a borrow pit, excavated for gravel and sand for nearby road construction 85 years ago. The reflected sky doesn’t care whether the pond is natural or naturalized!” Jones wrote.

ing yellow false foxglove in flower and the glossy, emerald foliage of galax.

Asbury Church to present “Palestrina to Poulenc,” a chamber music concert

By GREGG PARKER Gregg.Parker@madisoncountyrecord.com MADISON – Asbury Church will present “Palestrina to Poulenc,” a chamber music concert featuring pieces from the Renaissance to the early 20th Century.

The chamber music concert will be performed on Sept. 12 at 3 p.m. on the Madison campus in the sanctuary of Building 2. The event is free to the public.

Music aficionados will be able to experience the efforts of members of the Madison Early Music Project. Project members are delighted to introduce the community to a selection of Renaissance consorts and more from Bach through Poulenc, a French composer and pianist who created solo piano works, chamber music, choral pieces, operas, ballets and orchestral concert music.

The performance will feature musicians from several groups. The “Strings of Pearl” ensemble recently played for the Space and Missile Defense Symposium. Rocket City Viols of Huntsville is the newest chapter of the Viola da Gamba Society of America and has participated in the Valley Conservatory Early Music Festival for four years now and other venues in civic gatherings.

Other guests will be members of

the Valley Conservatory Early Music Festival, started in 2013 as an introduction to the community to early music and period instruments.

The event offers lectures, master classes and concerts.

In addition, music professors from University of North Alabama will join the concert.

Concert organizers are presented

What does it mean to have more of Jesus and less of self? For starters social media is bragging whether you think it is that or not. I am guilty and working on it. It is fun to show pictures but when is enough enough?

During 21 Days of Prayer I have even been pondering carrying around our mobile device like it is part of our wardrobe. I grew up without one and I think was better for it and and super thankful they did not exist while I raised my sons.

Each individual has to be honest with themselves and convicted and desire to do this. Sometimes we can’t do without the almighty cellphone because of the way our world is set up but I do have friends not tied to one. Do you spend more time tapping the keys on your devices or tapping into the word of God?

MADISON – Local band PMB will raise the audience’s spirit at the “Let There Be Music, Madison” concert on Sept. 9.

Old Black Bear at 212 Main St. in downtown Madison will provide the venue for the concert at 6 p.m. Fans and the band members themselves are well acquainted with the venue, because PMB has performed frequently at Old Black Bear this year.

Their sets will contain a mixed bag of music genres and styles.

Some tunes from their portfolio are “All You Need is Love,” “Lemon Parade,” “On the Road Again,” “Ramblin’ Man” and “Me and Opie Down by the Duck Pond.”

Morgan County District Attorney Scott Anderson said he expects a grand jury to indict Bass.

“We hope to obtain an indictment on several counts of capital murder,” he said.

Anderson said two separate trials would be held on the cases because they occurred in two jurisdictions, Morgan and Madison counties. He said it will be at least two years before the Morgan case would go to trial.

Anderson said he did not know which county would try Bass first. “He will remain in Morgan County Jail, but we won’t hoard him,” he said.

A capital murder conviction in Alabama is punishable by life in prison without parole or the death penalty.

Anderson said Nicholson died of multiple gunshot wounds near a gas pump at the Wavaho station at 707 Wilson St. N.W. in Decatur at about 6:20 a.m. on Aug. 19.

An affidavit filed by Decatur police Detective Joshua Daniell said video and witness statements identified Bass as the suspect who “searched (Nicholson’s)

body after shooting him and took property from him.”

A witness told authorities Bass left the gas station going west on Wilson Street in a small white vehicle. The vehicle was discovered about an hour later abandoned in the 110 block of 12th Avenue Northwest.

At the news conference, Allen said the vehicle’s “registration is part of the investigation. (The vehicle) was not stolen.”

A half hour before the fatal shooting in Decatur, Huntsville police received a call of a homicide and robbery on McVay Street, southwest of the Huntsville Metro Kiwanis Sports Plex, according to Huntsville police spokesperson Sydney Martin.

Martin said Carden was fatally shot in a parking lot on McVay Street when he was picking up a coworker for work.

According to court records, at the time of the two shootings Bass was out of jail on a $200,000 bond on a first-degree robbery charge from an incident that took place at a Texaco station on Sixth Avenue Northeast in Decatur on April 14.

Allen said he hasn’t seen a double killing such as this case in his six years as Decatur’s police chief.
