MADISON – Like the NCAA’s “Sweet 16” basketball finalists, the Alabama State Department of Education has its own “Sweet 16” and “Final Four” for “Alabama Teacher of the Year.” One Madison teacher is among those top four. “Congratulations to Kristen F. Steele, chemistry teacher at James Clemens, for qualifying as District 8 ‘Secondary Teacher

of the Year.’ Ms. Steele is now a (Final Four) Finalist for the 2022-2023 ‘Alabama Teacher of the Year’ award,” Dr. Ed Nichols, Superintendent of Madison City Schools, said. “The 16 emerged from a group of more than 150 top educators under consideration for this award and (has been) pared down to the final Top Four,” Nichols said. The Final Four includes two secondary teachers and two from elementary schools. Officials will reveal the winners at Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts on May 11 at 6 p.m. Selecting the top teachers involved various “educational stakeholders, including current and former administrators, teachers and community leaders in various capacities within our District 8 region and throughout the state,” Steele said. “This entire experience has been completeSee STEELE Page 2A

Crews worked feverishly on Friday to get The Orion ready for the amphitheater’s first concert, a fundraiser for the Huntsville Hospital Foundation featuring Jake Owen. It was held Saturday. This weekend, The Orion will host The First Waltz.

Music festival to celebrate “The Orion” amphitheater opening this weekend By STAFF REPORTS news@themadisonrecord.com HUNTSVILLE – The highly anticipated opening of The Orion Amphitheater in Huntsville’s MidCity District culminated with the $40 million venue’s first show, the 33rd annual Huntsville Classic featuring

Country superstar Jake Owen on Saturday. Crowds packed the new entertainment venue to support the Foundation’s causes for the Huntsville Hospital System, which includes Madison Hospital. They also came to check out the much-talked about grand amphitheater that will

BOB JONES SOFTBALL - Bob Jones Softball punched their ticket to the Region Tourney with a 14-3 win over James Clemens last Wednesday and a second place finish in Area Tourney. Bob Jones will face Thompson Thursday, 9 a.m. at the Florence Complex. The winner will play that afternoon at 1:45 p.m. for the Regional title and a shot at the state tournament. Go Patriots!

MADISON – Madison Board of Education soon will have a new member. The board seat for Luis Ferrer will revert to open in June. Ferrer has decided not to remain on the board. Madison Board of Education members serve five-year, staggered terms that expire on June 1. School board members do not run for office. No election is held. Residents Interested in serving on the board submitted their applications by April 4, and Madison City Council members reviewed the forms to select candidates for interviews. After several rounds of interviews, City Council selects the board member. Council members interviewed finalists on May 4 at Madison City Hall. The meeting was open to the public. Five individuals are vying for the school board seat: • Justen Alexander – Works as a substitute teacher for Madison City Schools. After attending Bob Jones High School, she graduated from the University of North Alabama in 2007. Alexander calls Madison home and lives in District 7. Alexander serves on the PTA Board at Columbia Elementary School. She is a member of the nomination committee with Madison City Chess League. • Jennessa Crossway -- Works for Wellstone Behavioral Health.
