Police charge Madison man with first-degree rape

DECATUR - Decatur police last week provided information of an alleged rape involving a Madison resident that occurred April 11 Brandon Luke Handy, 29, who police identified as a resident of Madison, was charged with first-degree rape and first-degree sodomy. Police said the alleged
sexual assault took place in Prospect Drive Southeast’s 200 block, which is between Second Avenue Southeast and Third Avenue. A woman told police responding to a criminal trespassing call Sunday, April 11, that Handy forcibly held her down during the sexual assault, according to an affidavit filed last Monday by Decatur police Detective Timothy Pace.
Handy fled on foot minutes before police arrived, Pace wrote, but was apprehended near the scene. Handy remained in Morgan County Jail last week in lieu of $40,000 bond, according to jail records. According to a Morgan County District Court order, Handy filed an affidavit of financial hardship and an attorney was appointed to represent him. Handy

Excitement builds as first Trash Pandas game at Toyota Field nears By STAFF REPORTS MADISON - As spring began, the giant scoreboard at Toyota Field in Madison continually flashed the countdown for the number of days until the Rocket City Trash Pandas’ first home game. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Tuesday at Toyota Field before a rivalry baseball game between Bob Jones and James Clemens high schools. Anticipation for the first professional baseball game at the state-of-the-art, $47 million stadium had been building for four years, and the countdown finally had a target date when the first pitch was scheduled for May 11. “We’re happy to finally see some Trash Pandas baseball coming to Toyota Field,” said Josh Caray, the director of broadcasting and baseball information for the team. The story of the Trash Pandas has been one of starts, stops and changes of direction with twists and turns in between. See TRASH PANDAS Page 2A

ARAB - A Decatur elementary school principal placed on paid administrative leave last month for “potentially problematic interactions” with school staff is accused of threatening a Madison woman at his Arab residence and holding her against her will March 14 McCollum for nearly four hours, according to court records. David McCollum, 40, has been told to stay away from Decatur City Schools property, and his contract wasn’t renewed for the next school year. McCollum’s last day of work at Banks-Caddell was March 12. A 34-year-old Madison woman, who alleged she was in a current or former dating relationship with McCollum, said in her petition for a protection-from-abuse order, filed March 17 in Marshall County and granted the next day, that McCollum hit her on her shoulder, head and arms. “He said he had a gun and when she tried to leave he attacked her physically and wouldn’t let her leave,” according to the petition.
