JROTC Donations

WEDNESDAY February 16, 2022

By STAFF REPORTS MADISON - Lennar Homes, a Florida homebuilder with over $32 billion in assets according to filings through November 2021, has purchased the homebuilding assets of Breland Companies doing business as Breland Homes for an undisclosed amount. The sale will not affect the Breland Companies commercial building assets and Breland Home homeowners and homebuyers will not see any change except in signage, according to Breland Companies president Joey Ceci. “Nothing but the name on the door changes,” said Ceci. “All Breland Home employees simply become Lennar Homes employees and they continue to work out of our offices.” There are two divisions of Breland Homes. MADISON - More and more school districts are starting to relax on their mask mandates for students due to the COVID pandemic. One group of parents in Madison say it is now time for Madison City Schools to remove its mask mandate. In fact, they argue that it was not within the scope of the school board to issue a mandate to begin with. Nine parents have banded together in a lawsuit against Madison City Schools in order to get the district’s mask requirement lifted permanently. Masks have been required at Madison City Schools throughout most of the school year. A COVID matrix approved by the school board last fall sets conditions when schools can move away from the mandate to a “masks optional” status, but the recent rise in cases from the Omicron variant has kept schools from relaxing the mandate since the beginning of the second semester last month. According to Shema Rizo, one of the parents in the suit, parents have brought up their concerns at past board meetings, called city officials and nothing is changing. They say school administrators should not be able to require their children to wear masks, and they are hoping a judge agrees. According to suit, Rizo’s son started getting headaches after wearing a face mask at school, and he also uses a doctor-prescribed inhaler. She has been in routine contact with MCS Superintendent, Dr. Ed Nichols, seeking an exemption from the mask requirement for her son. but has been denied. Rizo also said students who have See LAWSUIT Page 2A

SWEET TREATS FOR SWEET HEARTS - Families and staff of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Huntsville Hospital (NICU) received some special love this Valentines Day from Mill Creek Elementary. The school’s Junior Leaders Club of 4th and 5th graders stuffed goodie bags with treats and sweet messages for delivery to NICU. This outreach marks the 10th consecutive year of the school’s annual “Sweet Treats for Sweet Hearts” outreach to NICU coinciding with Valentines Day. Students, led by reading coach Tosha Swearingen and 3rd grade teacher Cara Marsico, collected candy and stuffed 50 bags for families with babies in the NICU along with goody bags for doctors and nurses. See story on page 7A.
