The guide will lead hikers down Alms House Trail to Historic Three Caves for a moderate to difficult 3-mile trek. Dogs on leads are welcome. Sturdy shoes and water recommended. Those who don’t want to make the walk back up will be shuttled to their cars. Please carpool to the starting location. This is a popular hike and parking is limited. The Christmas season at Burritt on the Mountain HUNTSVILLE - Burritt on the Mountain is a fascinating place to visit regardless of the season, but there is just something extra special about Christmas on the mountain.

Burritt on the Mountain is a very festive place to visit during the holidays. From the beautiful mansion decorated with a variety of Christmas trees, to the grounds, cabins and old church that are decked out for the holidays, this is a must-see during the Christmas season.

Burritt also hosts several special events during the holidays, and one of their favorite traditional holiday events is back. The Burritt on the Mountain Candlelight Christmas 2021 will be held Dec. 3 and 4, 5-9 p.m.

Burritt comes alive with the sights, sounds and smells of a traditional Christmas. Cabins are decorated with historic ambiance and the sounds of traditional music fill the air throughout the park. String

The Holiday Magic Dinners will be held Dec 9-11. This is one of Burritt’s most important and magical fundraisers. Guest enjoy a holiday dinner in the upscale atmosphere of the Burritt Mansion or the family style warmth of the cabins in the historic Park.

Of course, it wouldn’t be Christmas at Burritt on the Mountain with the Sanders Family Christmas, Dec. 15-19.

Skating in the Park is back for its 10th season

HUNTSVILLE - The holidays are back! With that comes another favorite attraction at Big Spring Park. The Huntsville Museum of Art’s Skating in the Park is now in it’s 10th year.

The outdoor skating rink officially opened Nov. 19.

Located directly behind the Huntsville Museum of Art in Big Spring Park, Skating in the Park is open seven days a week, including holidays. Rink hours change at different points of the season and can be found at hsvmuseum.org. Admission: $15 ages 10 and up $10 ages 9 and under $13 for groups of 10 or more and $5 scooter rental. There is a $5 discount for those who bring their own skates.

“Skating in the Park brings our community together each year to celebrate the holiday season in the heart of downtown Huntsville,” said Museum Director of Development Andrea Petroff. “We are proud to host this festive annual event and look forward to celebrating another season with old and new friends

alike. Skating in the Park enriches our economy by bringing more people downtown to enjoy all the unique happenings in our flourishing city. There are so many incredible holiday traditions in Huntsville each year, and I’m ecstatic to include Skating in the Park in a group of festivities that brings so much joy to North Alabama.”

The rink will host special events throughout the season including Skate with Santa, DJ Nights presented by McDonalds, a family-friendly New Year’s Eve, Superhero night and more.

After skating, visitors may come inside and warm up while viewing the Museum’s holiday exhibitions, including Under Pressure: A Survey of Contemporary Airbrush Realism, Sweetness and Light: Children in Illustrations, Encounters: Dean Mitchell, and much more.

Madison Christmas Capers December 12 4 p.m.

Downtown Madison 200 Main Street This highly original holiday event originated in 1925 when a local drugstore owner threw live chickens from the rooftop on Christmas Eve. Prize tags were attached to the chickens’ legs which could be redeemed for prizes, and the chickens were kept for Christmas dinner. In recent years, the tradition has been revived with gift cards attached to rubber chickens. Whether you participate in the catch or attend as a spectator, you’ll enjoy music and hot chocolate.

Huntsville Christmas Parade is “Back in Action”

By STAFF REPORTS HUNTSVILLE – Mix 96.9 (WRSA-FM) and the Von Braun Center (VBC) say they are excited to host the Huntsville Christmas Parade for the seventh year on Tuesday, December 7 at 6 p.m. The parade is presented for the sixth time by Redstone Federal Credit Union.

The theme for the 2021 Huntsville Christmas Parade is “Back in Action - Favorite Christmas Movies.”

“Everyone has a favorite Christmas movie and fond memories of watching holiday films with family and friends,” said Mayor Tommy Battle. “What a great theme for the return of the Christmas parade to downtown Huntsville. Galaxy of Lights is back for 26th year, nominated for national award

By JOHN FEW john@themadisonrecord.com HUNTSVILLE - Galaxy of Lights, an annual holiday light experience at the Huntsville Botanical Garden, opened on Nov. 11, for its 26th season. For the second year in a row, the event has been nominated in the USA Today 10 Best Readers’ Choice travel awards for Best Botanical Garden Holiday Lights.

“We are looking forward to sharing another year of Galaxy with our community, and it has been made all the more exciting by the nomination from USA Today 10 Best,” said Rebecca Turk, director of learning and public engagement at the Garden.

Galaxy of Lights features both walking and driving experiences, opening with Walking Nights through Sunday, Nov. 28, from 5:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (time of last admission). The event will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. Ticket prices range from $13 to $25 for adults and $7 to $15 for children. Discounted tickets of $3 each are available to those who qualify through Museums for All (limit of four tickets).

Guests are asked to pre-purchase timed tickets in advance to guarantee admission to Walking Nights, as gate tickets are not guaranteed.

Dog Walking Nights will take place on Mondays and Tuesdays during Walking Nights (Nov. 15, 16, 22 and 23). Tickets for dogs are $4 each.

Galaxy of Lights Driving Nights will take place Thursday, Dec. 2, through Saturday, Jan. 1, from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. (time of last admission). The event will be closed on Christmas Day. Ticket prices range from $20 to $35 per vehicle (limit of 10 passengers) with a $5 discount available at the gate on Mondays for active and retired military personnel with valid ID. Tickets for Driving Nights can be pre-purchased for any date or purchased upon arrival.

Huntsville Ballet celebrates 53rd year of presenting The Nutcracker Ballet

By STAFF REPORTS HUNTSVILLE Generations have enjoyed the annual tradition of Huntsville Ballet Company’s performance of The Nutcracker Ballet. This Holiday classic is a favorite Huntsville Tradition. This enchanting story comes to life at the Mark C. Smith Concert Hall with Tchaikovsky’s iconic score, masterful choreography, enchanting scenic designs, brilliant lighting and stunningly crafted costumes.

Enjoy a classic Holiday tale, with the beloved characters we have come to know and love over the years; lovely Clara, her brave Nutcracker, the mysterious Drosselmeyer, the magical Sugar Plum Fairy and all the inhabitants of The Land of Sweets. It’s an exciting and entertaining ballet for all ages.

Huntsville Ballet will perform the Nutcracker Friday, Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 11, at 2 p.m., and 7:30 p.m., and on Sunday, Dec. 12, at 1 p.m.

It is with gratitude that they will present a special performance of The Nutcracker on Military Night on Thursday, December 9, a tradition they have come to cherish deeply.

Huntsville Ballet is celebrating the 53rd anniversary of the show this year. The Nutcracker Ballet tells the story of a young girl’s gift of a nutcracker from her mysterious godfather.

Set in the 1850’s in Huntsville, Alabama, the HBC’s production of The Nutcracker has a traditional feel thanks to the Huntsville history sets and elaborate antebellum-style costumes. It opens at the historic Huntsville home of the Erskine family as Tchaikovsky’s music tells the

story of The Nutcracker, a gift from Laura Erskine’s mysterious godfather Drosselmeyer.

As the magical nutcracker comes to life, the young girl is whisked away to The Land of the Sweets, where she is entertained by a dazzling array of colorful characters from around the world. The performance is enhanced by a magical growing Christmas tree, as well as other special effects, and spectacular hand sewn costumes.

The performance in past years has included a cast of approximately 150, including students from the school, the entire professional company of Huntsville Ballet and a few special local celebrities in walk on parts.

The Nutcracker Ballet has a special place Artistic Director Phillip Otto’s heart. He was chosen by Balanchine in New York City to be the Nutcracker prince when he was a little boy. “It just wouldn’t be Christmas without The Nutcracker,” he said.

Plans in place for Madison’s yuletide events, including Christmas parade Chickens to fly Christmas Capers

By GREGG PARKER gregg@themadisonrecord.com MADISON – In 2021, the Grinch won’t spoil the fun as he did in 2020 with COVID-19. Plans are finalized to celebrate Christmas in 2021.

On Dec. 2 at 6 p.m., the Polar Express Christmas Tree Trail will be illuminated on Main Street. Madison City Community Orchestra will perform. Madison Public Library staff will read “The Polar Express.”

Registration for the Tree Trail is open through Nov. 19 while trees last. Workers will place trees on Nov. 24, and participants can decorate their trees afterwards. Sponsors are the historical society and the City of Madison.

After tree lighting on Dec. 2, Madison’s downtown merchants will present the first annual Wassail Fest. The public can enjoy samples of residents’ best recipes and vote for their favorite. Door prizes will be presented.

The 2021 Madison Christmas Parade, coordinated by Madison Parks and Recreation Department, will fill the streets on Dec. 11 at 5 p.m.

Parade units will line up on Plaza Drive, and proceed south on Hughes Road to Insanity Complex at 100 Skate Park Drive. The parade’s rain date will be Dec. 12 at 2 p.m.

In other activities, the city and historical society will present the third annual Madison Christmas Capers on Dec. 12 from 4 to 5 p.m.

Lifelong residents will reprise the legend with ‘Doc’ Hughes tossing live chickens from his drug store’s roof to spectators below.

The custom of Christmas Capers originated in 1925 when George Walton ‘Doc’ Hughes rented the Humphrey-Hughes property at 200 Main St. in downtown Madison. Doc Hughes opened his drug store business at that location, which he operated until 1972.

During years of the Great Depression in the early 1930s, Hughes started a holiday tradition dubbed the “Christmas Chicken Capers,” according to “Madison Station, Historic Downtown Madison, 1856-2015”

attached to their legs, and people could redeem the tags for prizes in Hughes’ store. Anyone who caught the chickens (sometimes turkeys, some people say) received the prizes and kept the chicken for Christmas dinner.

In recent years, the Christmas Chicken Capers evolved from live chickens to rubber chickens with gift cards from local retail stores.

At 4 p.m., Doc Hughes’ grandsons, Larry and Walt Anderson, will re-enact the legend by pitching rubber chickens with gift vouchers tied to

their legs from Hughes Drug Store’s balcony. Gift vouchers are valued in thousands of dollars.

Rotary Club of Madison will serve free hot chocolate and cookies. Madison City Community Orchestra will entertain the crowd.

Christmas Capers will continue when the city and Torch Technologies present the second annual “Madison Christmas Night at the Movie.” The free film will be shown at Home Place Park at 5:30 p.m. Parking will be available at Madison City Schools Stadium.

MADISON - The Rocket City Christmas Light Show and Winter Wonderland returns to Toyota Field for the second time will continue until Sunday, January 2.

“After welcoming over 25,000 cars of families to Toyota Field in 2020, we can’t wait to bring holiday cheer back to the Rocket City in 2021 with a bigger and better show for guests of all ages,” Trash Pandas General Manager Garrett Fahrmann said.

Guests can drive through the magical safari-themed mile and a half show that features hundreds of thousands of lights for $30 per car. The festivities last nightly from 5-9 p.m., rain or shine.

The show is family-friendly and will feature Christmas classics, modern Christmas hits, and even a few Christmas originals this year. They will perform this year at The Princess Theater in Decatur on December 18 starting at 7:30 p.m.

The Beasley Brothers is a Americana/Rock music group originally from the Madison area, but now based in Nashville.

From the ages of 3 and 4, Jackson and Lawson Beasley spent most of their time with toy guitars singing along to anything ranging from The Beatles and Eagles, to the CMT top 20.

Showcasing their unique ability to wrap heartfelt stories in familial harmonies, catchy melodies, and tasteful guitar work, the band works tirelessly to win over fans in the southeast and beyond. Lawson and Jackson Beasley, along with their band, started carving out their place in the country/rock music scene in 2015 when they scored their first large music festival slot and opened for the iconic rock band, Kansas.
