I

t’s dance. It’s a fiesta. It’s one of the most efficient paths to better health. It’s called Zumba.

Tessy Cabrera teaches Zumba classes in three Madison locations, one in Harvest. “Zumba is amazing and very fun. You forget that you are exercising, but you burn a lot of calories,” she said.

In the 1990s, Beto Perez of Colombia started the Zumba craze -- quite by accident. A choreographer, Perez forgot his music tape for an aerobics class he was teaching. He instead substituted tapes of salsa and merengue music.

Zumba spread from Colombia when Perez move to the United States in 2001, according to wikipedia.com.

Students in a Zumba class can expect moves from hiphop, samba, salsa, merengue, mambo, martial arts -- even Bollywood gyrations and belly dance moves. Students work ‘the core’ during sessions to improve abs definition.

“Zumba welcomes all generations, genders and different backgrounds,” Cabrera said. “We use many different music styles. People can enjoy the exposure to different cultures and backgrounds while socializing in a varied group with a passion for music from all over the world.”

Cabrera’s classes are in one-hour formats. “You burn 750 calories per hour. That is more than kickboxing or any other fitness format,” Cabrera said.

“I have a passion for dancing and feeling healthier.

When I discovered Zumba, it was a way to keep in shape.

For me, I am dancing and making friends,” Cabrera said.

“I make my classes fun.”

For Cabrera, Zumba’s most important benefits involve “making a woman more secure, healthier, sexier and more vibrant.”

Spurred by Cabrera’s encouragement, senior citizens gain self-confidence in Zumba classes. “The steps are easy.

Listen to your heart. You can move your hips, and you are doing it,” she said.

Comfortable ‘street’ clothes or regular fitness outfits are suitable for class. “Shoes are important. You want a thin sole so you can slide. Zumba even sells a special shoe to allow better movement from side to side,” Cabrera said.

“Zumba cares about our community and we’re always doing charity events. We hold fundraisers for organizations,

any person or a friend in need,” Cabrera said. A Zumbathon will be held at Hogan Family YMCA on June 8 from 2 to 5 p.m. to raise money for a kidney transplant patient.

A native of Peru, Cabrera moved to Madison from Texas two years ago with husband Jose, a retired helicopter pilot, and her beloved Maltese dog.

Tessy earned a bachelor’s degree in tourism administration and a master’s degree in tourism marketing. Tessy has traveled extensively in South America, the Caribbean and Europe, speaks five languages fluently and also has worked as a Spanish/ English teacher.

ocation, location, location. This anthem of real estate hit home for Ed and Katherine Hinson, who live atop Rainbow Mountain.

Reluctant to leave their neighborhood, how could they adapt their early-1980s home to 21stcentury living? A complete remodel/rebuild was their answer.

In 1983, the Hinsons built a casual, cedar contemporary house. After living there 14 years, the Hinsons were at home and comfortable in their cul-de-sac with cherished, long-term neighbors. Similar lots atop Rainbow Mountain weren’t available.

By 1997, they decided to update their space and style to a more transitional look yet retain a contemporary flavor.

“In a nutshell, we had a complete demolition of the interior and exterior and doubled the square footage,” Katherine said. Gone was the stained cedar, replaced by a new brick-and-stucco facade.

Surprisingly, they lived in the house throughout construction.

“People said we were crazy, but we actually rather enjoyed it. No cooking or cleaning!” she said.

Builder Terry Hanna of Hanna Construction built all cabinets and some furniture. “We worked extensively with LaMerle Mikell for interior design details,” she said. Darryl Bird was project architect.

The extensive master suite includes an office, a laundry and

his-and-her bathrooms. The house now has four bedrooms, six bathrooms. The family’s three cats like to lounge on warm tiles in the master and daughter’s bathrooms.

“Ed wanted a home theater and a ‘bunker’ for our severe weather,” Katherine said. Their six-seat theater has a 110-inch screen.

Ed first built a kitchen island of cardboard to confirm the right size. “He also raised the dishwasher off the floor,” Katherine said.

“You see that done more now, but back in 1997, he was ahead of his time.”

Applying other ideas, Ed designed spaces hidden behind camouflaged doors. The walk-in pantry’s door looks like cabinetry.

‘Hidden’ electrical outlets remain in convenient reach. “Friends tease Ed that he’s a gadget guru,” Katherine said.

Granite was not readily available in 1997, but the Hinsons contracted with Chip Kirby in Henagar for the kitchen island top and countertops, along with transforming a granite slab into a desktop and den hearth.

The living room roof was removed and an upstairs room added.

Ed helped in planning and installing a state-of-the-art, wholehouse lighting and security system with perimeter exterior cameras.

grandmother’s silver and cut glass. They enjoy collecting artwork and other accessories locally and from travels.

Traditional and Asian styles extend to the lawn with red Japanese maples under the dense, hardwoods canopy. “Existing rock lends itself as a natural backdrop for Asian-influenced castings we’ve collected,” she said. Even after 30 years, they continue to add landscaping beds. Harbarger designed plans for the original and remodeled lawn-scape.

Natives of Dyersburg, Tenn., the Hinsons graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro. They relocated from Knoxville for Ed’s job in Huntsville and bought their Madison home. Since 1990, Ed has worked as a representative for an electronics firm.

“We feel so fortunate to have chosen Madison so long ago,” she said. “It turned out to be such a fantastic area to raise our daughter.

The school system couldn’t be beat.” They own horses that live just five miles from their home.

Their daughter Leslie graduated from Bob Jones High School and the University of Montevallo in 2009 and now lives in Nashville.

The Hinsons are members of Asbury United Methodist Church, where Ed has participated with the basketball program for 25 years.

I

f Madison residents are looking for the healthiest and most delicious menu in town, they will not have to look far.

Sady’s Bistro, located in the 14 Main Street, has quickly become one of Madison’s favorite locations to get a good meal, at a good price and that is good for them.

Farmer’s Insurance agent Sady Zayas opened the bistro in March of this year and the impact has been more than she

could have ever imagined.

“We are very busy,” Zayas said. “We’re looking for ways to speed up things because it gets busy around lunch time.”

Zayas, a native of Guatemala, is no stranger to the restaurant business.

Before moving to the United States, Zayas was involved in a restaurant called “Casa de las Tortas” in Guatemala. She said that she hopes to bring a blend of recipes from home and also typical items found in other bistros across the world.

“I wanted to introduce crepes,” she said.

“I used to eat them when I was growing up in Guatemala. They are very healthy and that is something I want to have in this community, a healthy option.”

Some of the items offered at the bistro include smoothies like “Pineapple Breeze”, “Mango Lemonade” and regular pineapple. When it comes to food, healthy options fill the gigantic menu inside.

Zayas said a favorite item so far has been the turkey avocado sandwich.

“It’s very good,” she said. “[The sandwich] combines all fresh turkey, avocado, tomato on jalapeno bread.”

Most bistros and restaurants falsely advertise their food as “fresh.” That is not the case at Sady’s, Zayas said.

“All of our ingredients our fresh,” she said. “From the fruit that goes into the crepes and smoothies to the vegetables that go in our salads and sandwiches. Everything is fresh and light.

So when somebody doesn’t want a heavy meal, they can sit down and have something pleasant.”

Zayas already established herself as one of the foremost insurance agents in the city. Yet she felt like she could offer more to the community. After a discussion with friends and family, Zayas’ dream was slowly becoming a reality. ““I originally planed to create Sady’s as a hobby about two years ago,” Zayas said. “I was trying to create a mix of healthy, good tasting food. So I talked to my dad, my sister and Greg Glass and we decided to create a bistro in the peaceful downtown area.”

The idea to move to the downtown area turned out to be a great decision. Seldom will residents see Sady’s empty. The main thing that has attracted people back to this growing bistro is something Zayas is very familiar with; customer service.

waitress is rude, it just ruins the whole dinner,” she said. “So it is important to have that great customer service and make sure every patron feels comfortable.”

Zayas attributed the “lead by example” philosophy to how she run’s her successful business.

“I actually come out here and work in the kitchen,” she said. “I’m not a person who believes one can sit back and give instructions. I believe you have to do the same work as everyone else to be successful.”

a national association of gift stores. “Members are protected geographically and therefore are very open about sharing ideas. We meet twice yearly at the Atlanta Gift Market,” she said.

“We are a family business,” Welch said. “My daughter Andrea works in the store. My husband of almost 41 years, Scott, handles backroom and computer functions.”

The Welches’ journey to becoming entrepreneurs started on vacation in Edmonton, Canada when they visited a monogram shop. Excited about the prospect, they researched the industry and opened their first store in St. Petersburg, Florida.

“That was over 20 years ago,” Welch said. In January 2009, they closed their Florida store and moved to Madison the next month.

“We kept hearing good things about Madison, Alabama ... the growth, good schools. The economy in Florida was horrible. We opened the store in March 2011.”

The family enjoys North Alabama’s four seasons, especially fall and spring.

Scott and Linda have two adult children. Andrea and husband Phillip Canavan and their children Andrew and Leah also moved here from Florida. Their son Phillip and wife Jen and children Austin and Emily still live in Florida.

Store hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., except closing on Wednesday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m.

the Asbury Counseling Center has revolutionized the way patients in the Tennessee Valley receive treatment for chronic depression. Hayden uses Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS); therapy that uses highly focused magnetic pulses to stimulate key neurons in the brain.

The groundbreaking procedure uses the highly charged magnet positioned on top of the left prefrontal cortex to stimulate inactive neurons that are responsible for depression.

Naturally, the thought of a magnet stimulating the brain conjures memories of electroshock therapy. But Hayden said Madison Living 37

it is far from that.

“Though electroshock therapy did help patients, it often left them with side effects,” he said. “Side effects like weight gain and constant drowsiness are also seen in prescription antidepressants. With TMS therapy, it is for the most part side effect-free while helping out your brain in the long term.”

Hayden introduced the therapy in 2011 to go along with his extensive background. He is a graduate of University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham where he attended medical school and residency training in psychiatry and has over 23 years of practice experience as a psychiatrist.

The procedure is not available on first request Hayden said.

Patients suffering from depression would have to fail one antidepressant before receiving therapy treatments.

“It is quite revolutionary,” he said. “Now those who have tried multiple antidepressants have a second option that actually works. The magnet stimulates the brain that triggers the release of dopamine, the chemical that is responsible for energy and happiness.”

Mike Gaynes with Kalaheo Consulting, Inc. in San Francisco said the revolutionary treatment is truly a medical miracle.

“TMS is an FDA-cleared, non-invasive office procedure with no anesthesia. The patient just relaxes in a high-tech chair for about 40 minutes while a small magnetic coil on the scalp targets the precise location in the cortex that controls mood,”

Gaynes said. “After 20 to 30 daily treatments, more than half of the patients report significant improvement in their depression and one-third actually experience complete remission.”

Alabama is also making history when it comes to TMS treatment. Both Hayden and Gaynes said Alabama has recently become one of the first states in the country to provide Medicare coverage for TMS. “I could definitely see it become the standard in the next decade,” Hayden said. “It is revolutionizing the way we fight depression.”

One reason that the magnetic stimulation is so successful is because it focuses on a specific part of the brain as opposed to antidepressants that may take longer to reach the area that triggers dopamine.

“Depression is a brain disease,” Hayden said. “Some of the patients I have seen cannot eat, sleep, cook or do everyday activities because depression has consumed them. So the TMS begins to wake up the central areas.”

There are only five locations in the state where TMS is available. There are two in Birmingham, one in Decatur, one in Aniston and the Asbury Counseling Center where Hayden is located.

“We’ve had dramatic responses,” he said. “It is just amazing and truly a medical miracle.”

effery and I met in July of 2003, 10 years ago this summer, on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship. We were 15 years old on vacation with our families. Luckily we met the second night of the cruise and ended up spending the entire trip getting to know each other.

Despite going our separate ways after the cruise, we remained in touch for years. After the cruise, we dated for two years long distance between Michigan and Alabama. We ended up going our separate ways for college but ended up right back where we knew we belonged, together.

I graduated from Western Michigan University in 2009 and moved to Atlanta for a job. Jeffery was still finishing his degrees at Auburn we were finally close to each other and so that definitely was a great sign to start dating in person.

We began dating again immediately and still felt the same true love we did as teenagers.

Now we are living in Huntsville and will be celebrating our marriage at Creekside Plantation in Mooresville on May 18.

We plan to live in Huntsville and share a beautiful life and future that lies ahead of us.

Jacob and I met 5 years ago through his now sister-in-law. I happened to work at a coffee shop at the time and Jacob’s brother was dating a girl that I worked with. We remained friends for the bulk of those five years and only started dating about a year ago.

Once we started dating it did not take long for Jacob to decide to propose.

He got my whole family involved, and everyone but me knew months before he actually proposed. Jacob proposed on Christmas Eve in the yard of an old house that we both love. The house is located in New Market, where Jacob grew up and went to high school, and we would drive by that house wishing we could buy it and fix it up someday.

We drove to Flint River Coffee that morning and bought a

latte as usual and then drove to see the house. Jacob pulled into the drive way and suggested we get out and walk around the property. It was a little rainy that day and I was turned around looking at the house and when I turned back around he was on one knee! He had a friend of his meet us there shortly after to take engagement photos.

I happened to start working at Madison Town & Country Bridal earlier that year. Finding my wedding gown and everything else I would need was pretty simple.

My mother, grandmother, two sisters and best friend came shopping with me one morning, and my youngest sister actually ended up pulling the dress I fell in love with. It was completely different than what I thought I wanted! I chose a WTOO dress and bridesmaids by them as well. We are having an intimate ceremony in the fall and I cannot wait!

ack Humphries is a graduate of Bob Jones High School and also graduated from the University of AlabamaHuntsville with a degree in Computer Engineering. After graduation, Zack accepted a job in San Diego, CA with British Aeronautics Engineering (BAE) in 2011 and we ended up meeting each other at Summit Church in San Marcos, CA. Zack recently accepted an offer to work for Georgia Tech Research Institute in Atlanta, GA, where he is now employed.

I’ve been a student at Palomar College in San Marcos, CA and I will continue my studies in Atlanta. I am also an artistic freelance photographer with my own business, Reflections in Time.

After revisiting our favorite spots as a couple in early December 2012 in San Marcos and the surrounding area, Zack proposed to me high atop Double Peak in the Cerro de las Possas Mountains of San Marcos, CA. The mountaintop was the perfect place with views of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding mountains.

The April 27 wedding was an intimate affair at First Baptist Church Madison with the Rev. Thomas Walker officiating.

Our wedding ceremony and reception reflected our true love and devotion to both God and each other.

friends their commitment to keeping God central in their lives together. This desire was very evident in the beautiful vows written by Zack for the wedding ceremony, the special scripture-based foot washing observed at the reception, and the tender prayer offered by Zack before the meal.

My family traveled from California, West Virginia and Florida to attend the wedding. Zack’s extended family traveled from Mississippi and Alabama. The reception was held at the Edgewater Clubhouse at Lady Ann Lake in Madison, AL. The wedding and reception was attended by our family and close friends.

C

arl and I met in high school while on a mission trip to Honduras with our youth group. It was there where it was easy to see each other’s true selves and hearts. We were both extremely involved in our church and had a strong passion for the Lord and others. Not long after we started dating Carl began college at Auburn University.

For two years we navigated the ups and downs of a long distance relationship getting by with many letters and 4 hour drives. Eventually I joined Carl at Auburn.

We were finally able to enjoy the presence of each other and a true community of common friends. After graduating in psychology and interning for a year Carl received a job in North Carolina as a youth pastor. We were obviously excited for the Lord’s blessing but once again found ourselves in a long distance relationship.

One weekend when we returned to Madison, Carl surprised me with a special date. On the hour drive there I struggled with an internal battle over whether the proposal was happening. When we finally arrived I was excited to discover we were at a county fair. I love the rides, atmosphere, and sweet charm of fairs. He knows me very well. My suspicion still snuck up as he offered to go all out on fair food and even ride the dizzy rides that make him sick.

However, I once again convinced myself it was not happening because it would be too

dangerous to have a ring in your pocket on those rides. Little did I know the surprise was waiting for me at home. When we got back to my house, he proposed at the same spot he had once asked me to be his girlfriend over five years before.

We are extremely excited for our wedding. Our community has meant so much to us over the past years and we can’t

wait to celebrate and rejoice with them.

We hope the love of Christ that we see in each other every day is displayed through our wedding and our marriage. One of the things we both look forward to is investing in ministry in together. We know marriage will be full of learning experiences.

However, there’s no one else we would rather be enjoying the adventure with.

evin and I met our freshman year of college at Snead State where played baseball and I played volleyball.

We were friends almost a year before we started dating and timing was everything, I wouldn’t change how our relationship started for anything. I knew everything about him from the beginning and I can remember thinking I shouldn’t date him because he was way too good for me.

I seriously thought he was perfect. He was a man of God, athletic, funny, smart, good looking and outgoing. I knew from the beginning he “fit the requirements” for my future husband. Our relationship went from friends to more than friends about half way through my sophomore year.

We were playing volleyball against each other and he thought he could score a point on me. Well of course I kept that from happening and talked a little trash afterwards.

Apparently he thought it was the hottest thing he had ever seen.

We are both super competitive, which just makes everything that much more interesting. Our flirting basically consists of competitive trash talking. We seriously have so much fun just being with each other. My favorite thing about our

relationship is the security we have with each other. I can trust him with every ounce in me.

When Devin proposed to me he used a prop, a pink Bible. He had two reasons for using it. For one, pink is my favorite color and the Bible symbolizes what we

want to be the center of our marriage. We know what it takes to keep a marriage strong and that is to keep God in the center of everything. We are so excited to start the next chapter in our lives. We are getting married in Florence on Oct. 5 and cannot wait.

ince 2000 the Rotary Club of Madison in conjunction with the City of Madison, has had the privilege of recognizing an outstanding Madison City employee.

The criteria for this exceptional employee award is a full time Madison employee, employed by the City of Madison for the last two years, continuous above-andbeyond the call of duty performance or performance of a single outstanding service act for Madison citizens. The selection of these individuals was done solely by their supervisors at the City of Madison.

This year’s Employee of the Year was Aquatics Director Kyle Parker. Parker is a recent graduate of Auburn University who works alongside Parks and Recreation Director Kory Alfred at Dublin Park.

“I am honored to get this recognition,” Parker said. “I love my job and what I do. There is a lot involved in the job and I help Kory out a lot but I could not have received this award without the help of those around me and for that, I thank them.”

Trulock said he was impressed by Parker’s persistence 48 Madison Living

and commitment to making the aquatics in the area safe and enjoyable.

“Kyle’s commitment to the Aquatics program is outstanding, and demonstrated by the number of long hours and number of weekend hours he spends at Dublin,” Trulock said. “He is the person responsible for managing the City’s two pools, swimming lessons, swim meets and other aquatics programs. Kyle is responsible for hiring and managing approximately 35 Seasonal Lifeguards each year, and up to 8 regular employees.”

Parker personally developed an extensive orientation and training program for the City’s new crew of 35 plus seasonal lifeguards each year.

“This past year, while the department was short-staffed, Kyle did an extraordinary amount of work to keep our programs going for our citizens,” Trulock said. “Kyle took a major role in obtaining Automatic Defibrillator donations for Dublin for our citizens.

Kyle also oversaw the installation of equipment for disability access to our pool at Dublin; and he is currently working on a new swimming lessons program for citizens — Tanner Ward with disabilities.”

Patrol Officer Tanner Ward won the Officer of the Year award. Ward remained humble and thanked his fellow officers.

“I could think of officers that deserve this award much more than I did,” he said. “Its an honor to be recognized just for doing what I love.”

Ward, a Huntsville native, is currently assigned to the Traffic Safety Unit where he is responsible for advanced traffic crash investigations and a member of the Department’s SWAT Team, a certified FBI Firearms Instructor, a DUI Field Sobriety Instructor and is responsible for the development of training courses and continued education for fellow officers.

“Officer Ward is an exceptional officer who constantly performs to the high standards of the Madison City Police Department,” Chief Larry Muncey said.

Fire Fighter of the Year Mason Daniel, who drives the fire engines from the Mill Road station, has worked for the department for nearly 18 years. The veteran driver works 24hour shifts each week to ensure the safety of Madison citizens.

“I’m very happy and I thank the city for recognizing me,” he said. “But this really is a team award because we all work together. We know that we all have a job to do and we aim to serve safely and effectively.”

Debbie Overcash, Chair Employee of the Year, said it was an honor to recognize some of Madison’s finest citizens.

“The Rotary Club of Madison is pleased to have the opportunity to recognize these outstanding individuals who help to make Madison the place we are all proud to call home,” Overcash said. “Our city employees do an exceptional job; we are excited to recognize those who go above and beyond.”
