Thiscomesafterheavy nancialstrugglesfortheorganization sincethepandemic.Thethree locationsacrossHuntsvillehave lost2,500memberssince2019. That’sequivalentto1.8million dollarsinrevenue,Collensaid.

“Therearealotofoptions,a lotoftheoptionsthatthestaffis workingon,theboardmembers areworkingonandthisgivesus thetimetobeabletodothat,” Collensaid.“Sothatwecomeup withthebestwaytocontinueto operateandcontinuetodothe thingsinthecommunity.”

Lossinmembership,alongwith ahugemortgagebillduesoon andrisingcostsofequipment andmaintenancegaveCollenand theboardonlyonechoiceifthey wantedtokeepdoorsopen.But ifthingscontinuetogetworse, somememberswouldn’tbehappywithlosingtheirY.

MADISON–It’snosecretthat theMadisonCitySchoolDistrictisgrowingrapidly.They’ve openedtwonewschools,Midtown ElementaryandJourneyMiddle School,inthelastthreeyearsto accommodategrowth,butatthe ratethestudentpopulationis growing,SuperintendentDr.Ed Nicholssaysmoreisneeded.

AttheMadisonChamberof

Commerce’ssecondannualBack toSchoolBreakfast,Nicholsreportedthattheschooldistricttodayhasatotalof12,916students, andsince2013thedistricthasaveragedanadditional353students peryear.By2030,thestudentbody isprojectedtoreachover15,000.

“Ifyougobackinjustthelast fouryears,wenormallyendthe schoolyearandstartthenext schoolyearabouttwohundred studentsless.Notthisyear.We endedtheschoolyearwith12,700 andafewoddstudentslastspring, andwearenowat12,916,”said Nichols.

Thecurrentcapacityofthe schoolsisaround14,000,which accordingtothestatistics,thedistrictwillquicklyoutgrow.

“Yousay,‘Howcanwehave achallengeofcapacity?’Well, there’stwotypesofcapacity. There’scapacitywherewecram

everykidineveryroompossible, andthenthere’scapacityforactuallytheprogramsthatareinthe school.See,someofourschools werebuiltwhenspecialed,EL, STEM,advancedmath, nearts, andmusicdidn’treallyexist.But that’snotthecasetoday,andwe needroomsforthoseteachersand weneedspaceforthoseteachers. So,realcapacityiswhenthere’s roomforthem,”Nicholsexplained.

Inordertocreatemoreroom, theschooldistricthasalready announcedplansforaneighth elementaryschoolinLimestone Countythatisexpectedtoopen inthefallof2026,butDr.Nicholssaysevenmorewillneedtobe done.

Thedistrictislookingtoaddnew wingstoBobJonesHighSchool, JamesClemensHighSchool,and

theHouse,toacquirepay raisesforservicemembersandauthorizethe continuationofSM-31B missileproduction,which takesplaceatRedstone Arsenal.

“Theworkwedohere defendsthenation,”he said.

FortheNASAsideof RedstoneArsenal,Strong contributedtotheScience, Space,andTechnology Committee’spassinglast monthoftheNASAReauthorizationBill,which supportstheSLSprogram andOrioncrewvehicle, majorprojectsforMarshallSpaceFlightCenter.

Withhispositionon theHomelandSecurity Committee,Strongsays heisadvocatingforbordersecurityandtheuse ofHuntsville-developed technologyto ghtMexicancartelsbringing fentanylinthroughthe southernborder.

“I’vebeentothesouthernborder.WhenIwent there,the rstthingI askedis,“Howmany dronesarewe yingdaily?”Gotthat,butthenthe thingthatcameup[was] theysaid[that]forevery dronebordersecurityis ying,theMexicancartelsare ying17…They’re

comingintotheU.S.airspace,landing40and50 milesinsideAmerica,” Strongsaid.“Manyof yousawmeinacommitteehearingforHomeland Security.IsaidIhavethe technologyinthedistrict Irepresenttoblockthese drones,todropthese drones,ortointercept. Takeyourpick.Wecando it.”

Strongalsointroduced abilltofoundaNationalCounterUASTraining CenterwithHuntsvillea strongcandidateforthe siteofthetrainingcenter. “Thesecomplexthreats requireintelligentsolutions,andnoonedoesthat betterthanus.Ifanyone understandstheneedfor counterUAS,it’sHuntsville,Alabama.Infact, HuntsvilleInternational Airportisoneofthefour UASdetectionandmitigationresearchprogram testsitesinthenation,” saidStrong.

Overall,Strongreported servingtheFifthDistrict throughover1,000meetingswithconstituents, 1,500constituentsserved incasework,andsecuring$18.5millionfromlast year’sappropriationsbill forinfrastructureand$159 millioninfederalgrants.

HUNTSVILLE-Groundisofciallybrokenonthefuturewest Huntsvillerecreationcenter,kickingoffayear-longconstruction projecttobuildanewplacetoplay intheCity’s fthdistrict.

Theone-story,27,350-squarefootfacilitylocatedat150Martin Road,justwestofZierdtRoad.The facility’sdesignmirrorstheMark RussellRecreationCenteronTaylorRoad,whichistypicallyoneof HuntsvilleParks&Recreation’s busiestcenters.

“It’sanexcitingstepforward inourcommitmenttoproviding morequality-of-lifeamenitiesto allpartsoftheCity.Whilethis

areahasseentremendousresidentialgrowth,ithaslackedrecreationalfacilities.That’sabout tochange,”saidHuntsvilleMayor TommyBattle.

Thenewfacilitywillfeaturea gymnasiumwithtwobasketball courts,twovolleyballcourtsand threeindoorpickleballcourts. Siteworkwillalsoincludethree exteriorpickleballcourtsand landscaping. Constructionisexpectedtotake ayeartocomplete.

“Thiscenterwillmeetagrowing demandforrecreationalopportunitiesandfosteravibrantand activecommunity,”saidDistrict5 CouncilMemberJohnMeredith. “Iwanttoextendmyheartfelt thankstotheCityAdministration

andmyfellowCouncilmembers fortheirdedicationandsupportin makingthisprojectareality.”

Thenewfacilitywillraisethe numberofrecreationalandcommunitycentersto15throughout theCity,complementingmore than65publicparks.Parks&RecreationDirectorJamesGossett saidtheprojectwillbeagreatadditiontotheCity’sportfolioofrecreationalamenities.

“Moreimportantly,it’satestamenttoHuntsville’scommitment toprovidingaccessible,high-qualityfacilitiesforallourresidents,” hesaid.“Thiscenterwillserveasa vibranthubforsports, tnessand communitygatherings,fosteringa stronger,moreconnectedcommunity.”

HUNTSVILLE-Thenewstate-ofthe-artJohnHuntParkRecreation Centerwillbringnewrecreational opportunitiestotheCity’slargest parkandshouldillicitcheersfrom Huntsville’sgrowingpickleball community.

The$18.5millionprojectcallsfor 25lightedexteriorpickleballcourts thatwillalsobecoveredbyanengineeredmetalstructuretoensure fewerrainouts.

TheHuntsvilleCityCouncilauthorizedMayorTommyBattleto enterintoaconstructionagreement withFiteBuildingCompanyforthe

project,andconstructionshould startinfall2024.Itwillbelocated justnorthofJoeDavisStadiumon about8.5acres.

“Whenwestartedplanningfor thenewrecreationcenter,weknew thatpickleballhadtobeacentral feature.Wewantedtoensurewe providedtop-notchfacilitiesforthis rapidlygrowingsport,andwe’re con dentthisdesignwillmakeour pickleballcommunityveryhappy,” saidHuntsvilleMayorTommyBattle.

Theone-story,60,580-square-foot recreationcenterwillfeaturefour full-sizedgymnasiumswithfour regulation-sizebasketballcourts, whichcanbestripedtoaccommo-

dateeightregulation-sizevolleyballcourts.Aconcessionareaand restroomswilllinkthegymstothe mainbuilding,whichwillincludea tnessroom,twomulti-purposeactivityrooms,of cespaceandmore. Thefacilitywillalsoincludeanew parkinglotwith298parkingspaces. Theagreementalsocoverssitework,includingparking,landscapingandstreetscapeimprovements toDonMincherDrive.Thenew centerwasdesignedbyWilliamM. Boehme&Associates.

Theconstructioncontractisfor 420days.Theagreementstipulates workwillbeginwith10calendar daysofissuanceofnoticetoproceed.

MADISON-Twolocal womenareworkingtogethertoseeklawmakersupportforproposed federallegislationthat wouldimprovetreatment forpeoplewithrarediseases.

SaritaEdwardsofMadisonandAndreaHoffmeier-WilsonofDecatur, alongwithadozenother RareDiseaseLegislativeAdvocatesoftheEveryLifeFoundationfor RareDiseasesmetwith U.S.Rep.DaleStrong, R-Huntsville,recentlyin theirquesttogetsupport forlegislationthatwould helpitsmembers.

Thewomenareasking lawmakerstocosponsor orsupportthreepieces oflegislationthatwould makelifealittleeasierfor thosewithrarediseases.

HR830wouldhelpensurelowerpatientcopayments.HR4758wouldremovesomeoftheredtape providershavetodeal withtoprovidecarefor childrenonMedicaidwho needtreatmentoutside theirhomestate.HR7384 wouldextenduntil2029 anFDAprogramthat awardsdrugvouchersfor drugsthattreatrarepediatricdiseases.

“Wepresenttheseand askthemtoconsidercosponsoringorsupportingthemattheHouseor Senatelevel,”Edwards saidoftheproposedlegislation.“Generally,we neverhearback,wejust keepaneyeoutfortheir decision.”

Edwardsalsoservesas thepresidentoftheMadisonCityCouncilofPTAs.

Thefoundationworksto improvethelivesofmore than30millionAmericanssufferingfromone ormoreofthemorethan 10,000knownrarediseases,Hoffmeier-Wilsonsaid. Theydothisbyeducating andactivatingthepatient communitytoensurethey areheardbygovernmentalandhealthcareindustrypolicymakers.

Inadditiontomeeting withStrong,thegroup ofabout14heldonline meetingswithU.S.Sen. TommyTubervilleand, onFriday,U.S.Sen.Katie Britt,regardingthethree billsthathavealready beenintroducedinthe U.S.HouseofRepresentativesbyothermembers.

Hoffmeier-Wilsonand Edwardshavedifferent perspectivesontherare diseasestheydealwith daily.Hoffmeier-Wilson hasararediseaseand Edwards’sonhasone,

buttheyworktogether whentryingtoimprove treatmentsforsufferers. Oneoftheissuesislack ofinsurancecoveragefor out-of-statemedicaltreatmentsthatareneeded. MadisonNeal,apublicrelationsliaisonfor Strong,calledtheirmeetingwiththecongressman “productive,”butwould notsaywhetherthecongressmanhasdecidedto supportthebills.

Twoofthethreebills aresponsoredbyRepublicansandallthreehave cosponsorsfromboth parties,Hoffmeier-Wilson said.

Asamomwhoseyoungestson,Kareem,hasa raredisease,Edwards sharedwithStrongand theotherlawmakersher particularinterestinthe AcceleratingKids’Access toCareAct—abillto amendtheSocialSecurity ActtostreamlineenrollmentundertheMedicaid programofcertainoutof-stateproviders,since treatmentforrarediseasesoftenrequiresmedical providersinotherstates. Edwardsbeganher advocacyeffortsafterreceivingaprenataldiagnosisofEdwardssyndrome, fulltrisomy18,andis nowdeterminedtobring awarenesstorarediseasesanddisability.

Hoffmeier-Wilson,who hasarare,hereditarymitochondrialdiseasecalled LHON/Plus,saidsherequiresinfusionsofketaminethateaseherpain, buttheyareexpensive anddonotcounttoward herinsurancedeductible.

“Theyconsidertheinfusionsexperimental,so theywon’tcoverthem, buteverytreatmentI haveisconsideredexperimentalbecausethediseaseissorare,”Hoffmeier-Wilsonsaid.“Itcosts $400perinfusion,and formyhusbandandme, itcomesdowntopaying thepowerbillorspending lessongroceriestoget thesetreatments.Ican’t functionunlessIhave thesetreatments;Iwasin constantpainbefore.”

Shecannottakestandardpainkillersbecause theyinterferewithher diseasetreatment.

Strong’sspokeswoman saidhehasnothadtime yettolookthroughthe bills.

“Hesayshewilllook intothelegislation,”Neal said.“Hegetsabout100 peopleayearseeking co-sponsorshiporsupport....Evenifhedidn’t cosponsorabill,hecould voteinfavorofitand showhissupportforit.”

DECATUR-Framedby camera-totingspectators inshorts,bathingsuits andT-shirts,200menclad inUnionblueandConfederategraywooluniforms will recannons,shoot ri esandwieldbayonets.

Heldintheshadowof PointMallard’swater park,theBattleforDecaturagainwillbringtolife thefour-dayskirmishthat tookplaceonthebanksof theTennesseeRiver160 yearsago.

“Weexpectabout5,000 peopletocomeouttosee this,”saidLarryThomson,amemberoftheSons ofConfederateVeterans Camp580.“Wehopeeveryonegoesawayhaving someperceptionofwhat battleswerelikeandwhat themenonbothsidesof thewarsacri ced.”

OnLaborDayweekend, Thomsonwilljoin200 otherinfantrymen,cavalrymenandcannonoperatorsfortheannualBattle forDecaturreenactment atPointMallardPark.

Although160yearshave passedsinceGen.John BellHooddeclaredDecatur“ahardnuttocrack,” reenactorskeepthearea’s CivilWarhistoryalive throughtheevent,which willfeaturemencladin wooluniformsandwomendressedinhoopskirts andcorsets.

The40thannualBattle forDecaturwillfeature mockbattles,music,atea, militaryballandworship service.
