Byrne attendedMill Creekfrom2011to2015 andthen graduatedfrom JamesClemensHigh School.
“I remember my fourthgradeteacher,Mrs.Pratt. She wassokindtomeand mademeenjoycomingto school everyday,”Byrne said.

MADISON –Columbia Elementary School inMadison willprovide the venuefortheRocket CityBuddyWalk, amajor fundraiser forsupporting individuals with Down syndrome.
Thebuddy walk will benefitBringingUpDown Syndromeor BUDS, whichisNorthAlabama’s leading501(c)3 non-profitorganization dedicated toindividuals with Down syndromeandtheir families.
“BUDS isproudtohost andinvite the publicto the Rocket CityBuddy Walk,” BUDSCo-President Caneilia Patterson said. “Thisofficial event oftheNational Down Syndrome Society’s Buddy Walkseriesis aheartwarmingcelebration thatunites familiesfrom across NorthAlabama.”
Participants will gather at Columbia,667 Balch Road in Madison on Sept. 21from 10 a.m.to 2p.m.

MADISON -Last week my article was partlyabouttheoldhousemovedfrom theareajustsouthofGate 9toanew positionfurthersouthandeastintothe arsenal’ssoutheasternarea. Theycalled it“TheGoddard House,” butbeforethe army hadpossessionofit,thehouse for about20 years wasknownastheChaney House.PriortoMaburn (sometimes recordedasMayburnorMabren) G. Chaney’s ownershipithadbeen owned initiallybyJamesManning, whoprobably builtitas aresidence forhissons PeytonandGeorge. Subsequent ownersincluded Thomas W. White(foronly about 8days)andlaterLukeMatthews. Allofthesemen were ofhistoricalprominenceinMadisonCounty.EvenGeneral BartleyM.Lowe,whomarriedSophia, oneofJamesManning’sdaughtersby hiswifeSophia ThompsonManning, was likelyanoccupantofthehousefor some time,becausehe wasinvolvedinmany transactionsabouttheproperty.Even then,severaloftheoldest records refer tothe roadas runningtothe JamesManninghousewestofHuntsville.Bartley, asManning’sson-in-law, eventuallyhad ownershipofalmost3,000acresofland intheimmediatearea,includingthe2138 acresinitiallyowned by JamesManning. Inoneofthetransactions foradjacent landin1843, aparcelof100acres was soldtoGeorgeand PeytonManning by RichardHolding,along with39slaves.All butsevenoftheslaveswerethereafter freed,withthesevenprobably remaining ashouseholdservants.Anotherparcelof 218acresalsocametobe attachedtothe east,anditincluded aquarterofanacre specificallywithheld wherethe Ward Cemeteryislocatedonthearsenaltoday. That cemeteryplot wasstatedinthedeed asbeingthe burial groundof John Withersandhis family. John Withers owned thelandalongIndianCreektothenorth ofthecemetery,intoResearchPark today. Withers wasthe father-in-lawof Madisonplantation ownerClementComerClay, 8thGovernorofAlabama, who marriedSusannah Withers.Their land includedtheareaimmediatelynorthof today’sairport. John Withershimself hadlandinthesouthernportionof ResearchPark ontheeastsideofIndian Creek,extendingeastwardtojustbeyond today’slocationoftheCabela’sstore. However,thisarticlecovers someof thedetailsofthetime when Maburn Chaneyandhis familyoccupiedthe housethatbecameknownlateras the GoddardHouse.After Imoved toMadisonin1986andbegantoresearch the historyofthearea, IcametoknowMac Chaney,anephewofMaburn.Macledme tointerview othersofhis family, includinghismother,BerniceElkins Chaney, wifeof asonofMaburn’sbrother Frank. Thus,aportionoftheChaney familystory wasincludedinthebook“The People WhoLivedontheLand That Became RedstoneArsenal”because Ihelpedits author,Beverly Curry,toaddmaterial, participateininterviews orsuggest otherstobeinterviewed,preparetheindex, andcompletetheultimate report, which Itheneditedinitsentirety.Thebook alsocoveredmanyother families,which leadto RedstoneArsenal recognizingthe bookastheir firstethno-archaeological report. That book(finallypublishedin Decemberof2006)becamethestandard (orexample) forotherArmy basestoproducesimilar reports fortheir ownlands, andnowselectedpartsofBeverly’sbook areincludedinthisarticle. Afterseveral changesof ownership oftheproperty wheretheGoddard House wasoriginallyconstructed,the landcalledOakendalePlantationthen wassoldin1924 by KateandClarendon DavistoMaburn andhiswifeBertie Chaney.Theypurchasedthe700-acre parcelshownasA-17ontheArmyReal EstatemapsonNovember14,1924, for theamountof$34,000(DeedBook131, page 63).Maburn andBertieChaney maintained ownershipoftheparcel, withtheexceptionoftwo acresdonated fortheconstructionof aschool,untilthe WarDepartmentnotifiedthemtheland mustbesoldtotheArmy in1941.After becomingcalledtheGoddardHouse,it underwentextensive remodeling, resultinginthe removalofthebackstaircase, fireplaces,the fouridentical chimneys (oneoneachcorner),andothersignificant changes.BerniceChaney,whose latehusband Frank wasanephewof M.G.Chaney,visitedthehousewithBeverly Curryon July 27,2005. Since theculturalcontext ofthe ruralsettingdoesnotend where the sale ofpropertybegins, thememories Bernice related aboutherlife when she waslivingwith her parentsare presented.Bernicesaid:My familylivedupon thehill. Therewas astore insomebody’s house.It belonged totheButlers.Itwas aroominthehousethathad groceries init. Thestorehadmeal, flour,coffee, andcanned stuff.Mostlyyou grew your ownfood.Backthenyou’d take green beansand fatbackorstreaked lean,just alittle water,and cook thebeans downto grease.Somepeopleputin Irish potatoes. Put alidonit,andit wouldboildown rightquick.Wedidn’thave much money then. Ifound ahalfdollaroneday. Iwent tothe storeinButler’s houseand bought five poundsofsugar,acanofmackerel and five poundsofpintobeans.Mackerel wascheaper than salmon. That was67 years ago(1938). Theboysgot the skeletonas farasthe grocerystore.
