The Bailey Bunch

MADISON -The publication“Valley Leaves”inMarch of 1974onpage 150 printedaquery abouttheBailey,Moore, and Tribblefamiliesofthe1830sMadisonarea. Thequery wassubmittedby GeorgeR.BaileyofAthens,Alabama. ItstatedthatJosiahBaileyhadsiblings MatthewM., John,Hezekiah, Sarah, William J.,andElijah. Matthewmarried SallyAllen; Johnmarried first Jemima Burns, thenNancyBarham(“Basham” perMadisonCounty RecordsCenteronlinelisting);HezekiahmarriedMartha Moore first, thenLouisaGooch;Sarah marriedLouisLanders; William J. marriedSarahA. Johnson;andElijahmarriedMarthaAnn Vaughanin Limestone CountyonDecember14,1833.

Thestatedmarriage date forElijah indicatesthathissiblingsprobably marriedearlierinthesamearea, and the approximate agesofthis familyof siblings, alongwiththeirmarriages intolocalarea familysurnames, may wellpointtodescendancyfromalocal patriotoftheAmerican Revolutionary War, whoapparently alsohad ason named JamesBailey.James F. Bailey (1779-1843) wasthesubjectofanarticle in TheHuntsvilleTimesof May23,2007, page 7. James wasstated by his descendantstobea sonofMosesBailey(17401834)inseveralearlierpublications. The1834Last Will &TestamentofMosesmentionsonlyhiswife Judithand hisson William JacksonBailey, who wasalmostcertainlythesamepersonas the above-listedsiblingof Josiah. The willof1834 wasenteredintoprobatein Novemberof1835,indicatingthatMosesdiedwithin ayearofwritinghislast willandtestament. James Bailey also wasinvolvedintheFinalSettlementof theestateofMosesBailey, buthe was notnamedas arecipientofany share oftheestate-- whichmay have resulted from Jameshavingpreviouslyreceived lands wherehelived, alongwithbeing awell-establishedandindependentseniorbrothertoMoses’ above-named children. JosiahBaileyhad asonnamedHenry J. Bailey wholivedwithhisuncleHezekiahBaileyafter Josiah’sdeathbefore 1840. The1830censusshows Hezekiah Baileylivingbetweenthe households ofElijah(“Elias”)Baileyand aneighboringmannamed William Jackson, whomay nothave mentionedtothe census-takerthathislastnamewasBailey, oritmaybethathewasanunrelated neighborandhighly-regardednamesakeofJosiah’ssiblingwiththatgiven middlename.Hezekiah’s verydetailed Last Willand Testament of 1847 named hissiblingsand waswitnessed by James F. Bailey, who wasalsonotincluded amongthespecifiedsiblingsintheprovisionsofHezekiah’swill.

TheomissionfromtwoLWTsoffamily memberssuggeststhatJameswaspossibly not asonofMoses, orhecouldhave been aseniorand relatively wealthyuncleoracousinofHezekiah, Josiah, and theirsiblings.Other recordsindicate thatJames apparentlywas abrotherof anotherMadisonCountypioneer, David Bailey.Davidlivedintoday’sMonrovia areaalong Johns Roadanddeededland (thedeed waswitnessed by James)in 1816 fortheSalemBaptistChurch along “FunnellCreek”(today’sDryCreek fork fromIndianCreek). Of course,it islogicalthatJames wasinfact ason ofMosesandthatHezekiahdidnotinclude Jamesintheprovisionsofhiswill dueto James’ ownrequestasnotbeing needfulofany ofHezekiah’sproperty. Howeverthey were connected, the Bailey familiesofthearea were thoroughlyintegratedintothecommunity. Forexample,Hezekiah’s wifeLouisa Goochwas adaughterof Rolandand ElizabethGooch, early settlers whoare buriedonthehilltopbehindtheProject DanceStudio buildingontheeastside ofHughes Roadbeyondthe eastern end ofPlazaBoulevard.JohnBailey’swife Nancy“Barham”perhaps wasNancy Parham,ofthatMadison-areapioneer family. SarahBailey’shusbandLouisLanders wasnodoubtofthe area’s Landersclan. Also, thereare known linkstoother familysurnamesofthe area, including Word,Crutcher,Pettus, Parham,Dillard,Gray, Abernathy, Moore, and Tribble.

TheBaileylinkageswiththe historical familiesofMadison arejust apartof theincredibly interwovenconnections oftheearly citizens of the area where thetownlaterbecame established. As justoneexample, theknownhistory of James F. Onthesouthside of Mill Road, about aquartermileeastofCountyLine Road andonthe northeastedgeoftheCedar SpringsStationdevelopment,is very likelythe oldest housestillstanding withintheMadisoncity limits.Infact,it maywellbe the oldest housestillstandingin theentireNorth Alabama region. Thehouseis atwo-storylogcabinthat wasbuilt by pioneer JamesF.Baileyfor his familyresidenceandalsotoserveas aninnand wateringstop alongthestage andmail routebetween Huntsvilleand Mooresvilleintheearly1800s.

James F. Bailey wasbornin1779,possibly in Virginia of IndianandWhite ancestry.HemarriedSarah T. Johnston in 1803inWarrenCounty,Georgia.Before 1818 he,alongwithseveralsiblings andthemanbelievedtobetheir father, MosesBailey,(aRevolutionary Warsoldier)cametotheMadison areaprobablyby1806-1809 whileit wasstillIndian land. TheBaileybrothersboughtrights tolands westof theIndianBoundary Line assoonaslegalpurchaseswere allowed,in February of 1818. William J. Bailey, likelya brotherof JamesF. andDavidBailey, alsomarried aSarah Johnson, whocouldpossibly have been aclose relation of James’wifeSarah T. Johnston, daughterofSamuel Johnston. DavidBailey wasthe firstpurchaser oflandonthenorthsideof what is nowHighway 72 alongIndianCreek and DryCreek at the site of theProvidence communitydevelopment.In1816he deeded over 3acres of thelandtothe already-existing SalemBaptistChurch on land wherehelived. Thedeed wording said that theland wasagifttothe church dueto“…theloveand goodwill thathe hasforthe church”for aperiod“…so longasthe church shalluseit fora place ofpublic worship”.JamesF.Baileywas oneofthewitnessestothatdeed, which wasnot recordeduntil1829. Thedeed referstoDryCreek as “FunnellCreek”, andwhenit waswritten, itstatedthe locationasbeingin“MaddesonCounty, Mississippi Territory”.Infact, inthose days, evenwhatiscalled IndianCreek today wasnamed onmapsasHurricane Creek or Fork andlateras Price’s Fork (orBranch)ofIndianCreek. Theoriginal“IndianCreek”istodayknownas theHuntsville SpringBranchofIndian Creek. JamesBaileyin1818 recorded land purchasesseveral timesinthe area, includingone parcel adjacenttoDavid andtohis father-in-law, Samuel Johnston. Theparcelthatcontains James’ oldcabinand theBailey familycemetery,waspurchasedin1830. Thecabin isnotvisible tothepublictoday, even though itisintact. Thereasonthatit stillstandsis what hides itfrompubliceyes.Itiscompletelycontained and incorporatedwithinthemoremodern house oflocal veterinarianDr.Charles Whitworth. Withoutthatprotection, theold logs wouldhave rottedlong ago, butfornowitisvery wellpreserved and stillinuse, withitsconstructionplainly visibleinside Dr.Whitworth’shouse. That oldlogcabin nodoubthosteda numberofVIPs ofitsday, astheBailey familywas well-connectedtoprominent familiesoftheearly 1800s,includ-

Even ReubenCrutcher, the well-known PrimitiveBaptist preacher of thattimemarriedoneoftheBailey daughtersandis buriedinthe family cemetery about250 yardssouthof thecabin alongMill Roadin theCedar Springscommunity. Likewise, itis believedbysome thatanuninscribed tombstoneatthecenter of the little cemeteryisthatforMosesBailey, the Revolutionary Warsoldierand progenitorofthelocalBailey clan. However, somepeople saythatMoses was buriedinthe GrayCemetery, and that ispossible, butsince HezekiahBailey purchasedlandadjacent totheGray Cemeteryin1838fromDavid Gray, andMosesdiedthreeyearsearlierin 1835,itisnotlikely. Moses’ gravelocationinthecenteroftheBaileyCemetery makes much moresense,aspio-

neercemeteries typicallyhad the first burialcentered by subsequent burials around their oldestfamilymember fromthetime when the cemetery was first begun, andit appearsthatJames F. Bailey wasvery likelytohavebeen the oldest son of Moses--therefore, he wouldhave handled the burial ofhis fatherbehindthe housewherehelived and theninterredmorerelated family membersas theypassed. Moses’son Elijah Bailey wasfatherof theJamesE.H. Bailey that purchased threelotsintheembryonic townof MadisonStationin 1857 and 1859. Dueto agrave healthproblemof oneofher childrenbackthen, the MissionBoardinsistedthat they returntotheUnitedStates.

Asshespoke, Icouldseeher ponderingthosedifficultdays.Ithad beenanunexpectedturnofevents. Even though theyhad returned to theUS,theirlife ofministry wasnot over.Mrs.Dorsietold me she and herhusbandserved at Cedarmore (Crossings) foryears.Weboth were talking at once.I stillhad moreto askbut church wasgettingstarted.I turned aroundas theservice began, stillsoakingupher words. Mybelovedand Iwerevisiting thatSunday. We hadcome to hear ourdearfriend andmentor,Dan Garland, whoisservingas interim pastoratHorsecave.I cherisheach opportunitytohearDan Garland preach.FromHebrews12, heshared good wordsfor gradsand the rest of us.(Imadenotesalloverthemarginsof my Bible.)

Aftertheservice,IaskedMrs. DorsietosignmyBible. She was quitesurprised. My belovedandI have aheartfor veterans. When we seesomeone wearing amilitary hat,

we thankthem fortheirservice.I feltthe same about thislovely missionary fromdecades ago. “Thank youfor yourservice,” Igushed, huggedher tight, andaskedher to takeaselfie. Ninety-threeand abeautifulexampleofstillservingherLord, Mrs. Dorsie wasanunexpected blessing. Iloveitwhen God putspuzzlepieces together. With afarawaylook, shespokein asoft voice,“Isometimes wonder if our work made adifference.” That isprobably acommonpondering amongmissionaries when theylook back. Resultsare notalways measurable. We areplanting, someone else is watering, and God,ofcourse, isgivingtheincrease.

When my belovedand Isurrendered tothe Lordin2006, we thought we would begoingtofeedpoorpeopleinAfrica. (Wasn’tthatwhereall missionaries went?)Instead, God sentus 30 minutesup the road to help feedpoorpeoplein Pike County. NowweserveinFloyd County. We arecalled tobe “onmission” wherever we are. Satcher Continued frompage1B love for flyingalive by sharing it with others, includinghistwosons,Jackand Steven, whoare bothpursuing careers usingtheskillpassedontothem by their dad.

“Theboys justkindof grew up flyingto see grandpapa, andthen whentheywere oldenough, theydecidedthattheywantedtobe apilotas well,”said Ted’s wife, LauraSatcher.“So,two summers ago, he taughtourtwoboys, Stevenand Jack to fly, andtheygottheirpilotslicense.”

TedintroducedJackandStevento flyingatayoung age. They grew up flying backand forthtovisit familyinTexas ontheplane Tedbought forthe family in 2006,andthoughtheydidn’talways love flyingliketheir father, botharenow pursuingcareersin aviation.

Their youngestson Jack iscurrently enrolled at MississippiStateUniversityandparticipatingintheirAFROTC programinthehopesof followinginhis father’s footstepsandjoining theAir Force. Steven, theoldest, iscurrently pursuing acommercial flyinglicense at theUniversityofMemphisandlooking tojoinhis youngerbrothertocontinue histraining at MississippiState.

Theysayhaving adadwithexpertise in flyinghasbeenextremelyhelpful in

theirtraining.

“It’sdefinitelybeenhelpfulbecause I’musedtohisteachingstylebothin and outofthecockpit,”said Jack.“Heis here inthehouse, and Ican ask questionstoo, whichhasbeenextremelyhelpful.Ithas helpedstrengthen my relationshipwith him.”

“Imean whileIwas flying at Memphis, ofcourse, Ihad other instructorsthatI hadto flywithinorderto getthrough everything.Itwas good tosee differentperspectiveson flightinstruction, butstill,I mean, theywerenot asgoodas my dad,” jokedSteven.

“He’sprettymuchmymaininspiration forwhatIwanttodolateron inlife,” added Jack onhisgoalofbecomingan Air Forcepilot.“He’s helped methrough thataswell, givenmesomeinsidertips tohelpme reachthatgoal.”

Laurahashad afront rowseattothe bondher husbandandsonshave built overtheirsharedlove of flying andsees itas auniqueactivitytobond over. She admiresthekindofteacherherhusband hasbeentotheir sons.

“It’sbeeninterestingtoseehis relationshipwiththe boys just hispatience withthem, andhe’sjust agoodman overall.I’m alittlebiased I’msure,”Lau-

ra observed.“Mostdadsdon’tget to have thatsideofinstructionordepth ofinstructionwiththeirboys.”

As forTed’sperspective, hesays sometimesitisdifficult tobalancebeingtheir teacher andtheir father whenthey’rein thecockpit.

“It’s challenging formeasaninstructortocommunicatetothem asaninstructornot as theirdad,”hesaid.

Knowing that flying isfun butcan also bedangerousattimes, hispaternalinstinctsoftencomeoutwhenhis sonsare inthe air. When Jack andStevencompletedsolocross-country routes aspart oftheirtraining andcertifications,Ted’s paternalinstinctscame outinfull force. Hetrackedtheir flightpaths andperiodicallycheckedinontheirstatuses. When theirsignals woulddropout, worstcase scenarios wouldcometo mind.

“Ihadnoqualmsaboutthem flying solointhelocal area butwhen Icut them loosetodotheirsolocrosscountriesthat wassomenerve-wrackingdays because there’ssomuch unknown outthere that theycouldencounter,”Ted remembered. “I sweatedthose flights immensely, and Iwatchedthem like ahawkonthecomputer andlistenedtotheirradio callson the computerthe wholetime.”

Whenthecross-countrytreks were finallycomplete, he felt agreat senseof relief anda sense ofpride.

“It wasjust greattogetthembackand seethemland, justprideintheir accomplishmentandhappy thatthey madeit back,”he said.

Hissons arenot the only ones he passeshis flying knowledge onto.

WhileinNew Zealand fora year,Ted treated agroupof locals to ascenic flight overthe PacificIsland. Theexperience wasespeciallytouching foroneelderly

manwhogottosee the oneroomschoolhousehetaught at formanyyears froma bird’s eyeview. Here inHuntsville, he is partneredwiththe BoyScoutstoo fora flyingevent at HuntsvilleAirport. Tedisalsoachief pilotatthe Redstone flyingclub, whereheteaches civilian students the ropesofaviation.Hebecame involved inthe flyingclubafterreading anadvertisement in TheRedstoneRocket. Theclubwas theperfect outlet for Ted’srestlessnessafteraprolongedhiatusfrom flying.

“WhenwecamebackfromNew Zealand, we hadsoldourairplane before we lefttogo over there, and when we came back,it wasprobably twomonthslater in December, hefeltreallyrestlessand hecouldn’t figureout why, andthenext dayhesaid, ‘You knowIhaven’t flown sincewe’ve been back.’AndI waslike, ‘That’s what’s wrongwith you! That’s whyyou’rerestless because youhaven’t flown!’” saidLaura.

Ted flew forthe firsttimewiththe club in August 2005, earned hisFAA civilian instructor certificationin2010,andtook onhis firststudent in2013.

His sons, however, may just be his greatest students.Heoffered themadviceastheystarttheir careersintheair:

“A lotofit’s juststudyinghard. You arenot going tolearnitallinonenight. So,you really have to keep studying. You must keep learning evenafter youhave your license.Youmustcontinue totry andmakeyourself abetterpilotallthe time, and youhavetoberealistic about yourskillsandtobesortofbrutalin your ownanalysisofyourperformance.” Whenaskedwhatmotivateshimto give histimetopassingonhisskills and appreciation for flying, hisfamilyresponded simply, “The love of flying.”
