Thesunhasproduced strongsolar aressince lastWednesday,resulting inatleastsevenoutbursts ofplasma.Eacheruption —knownasacoronal massejection—cancontainbillionsoftonsof plasmaandmagnetic eld fromthesun’souteratmosphere,orcorona. The aresseemtobe associatedwithasunspot that’s16timesthediameterofEarth,according toNOAA.It’sallpartof thesolaractivitythat’s rampingupasthesunapproachesthepeakofits 11-yearcycle.

NASAsaidthestorm posednoseriousthreat tothesevenastronauts aboardtheInternational SpaceStation.Thebiggest concernistheincreased radiationlevels,andthe crewcouldmovetoabettershieldedpartofthe stationifnecessary,accordingtoSteenburgh.

Theawardhonorsachamberleader statewidewithlessthan veyears’experienceattheirchamberandwhohas demonstratedexceptionalleadership qualities,advancedthemissionoftheir chamber,andparticipatedinnon-chambercommunityvolunteering.

Eplingwaspresentedwiththeaward attheAlabamaChambersNightof ChampionsAwardsonApril24.

WhenEpling rststartedatthechamber,theawardwasamotivatorand sourceofinspirationforhertogrow theMadisonchamberandtakeittonew heightsinservingitsmembersandthe city.

“I rstlearnedabouttheChamber Championawardatmyvery rstchamberconferencealittleovertwoandahalf yearsago,”saidEpling.“Iwenttomy rsteverexecutiveleadershipconferenceonscholarshipbecauseourchambercouldn’taffordtosendmewithout megettingascholarshipthroughthem, andI’llneverforgetPenelope[Hinesof Monroeville]gotuponthestageandshe hadwontheaward,andIrememberbeinglike,‘Ihopeonedaywecangrowour chambertobelikeher[s].’” ChairmanoftheBoardofDirectors fortheMadisonChamberofCommerce DeWayneHowell,DirectorofEnvironmentalComplianceandSustainability atPolaris,nominatedEplingforthe2024 ChamberChampionAward.Shehasjust twoandahalfyearsunderherbeltatthe helmoftheMadisonChamberofCommerceandhasalreadymadeahugeimpact. “We’reonlyasgoodasthecommunity membersthatgivebacktoourcommunityeachandeveryday.So,whenwecan givebacktoourcommunity,itreallylifts theentirecommunityup,”saidEplingof hercommunityinvolvement.“Ilovegivingback.Ithinkthehardestthinginthis positionformerightnowisthatIdon’t havethetimetositontheseventoten boardsthatIusedtositonbeforeItook thisjob.”

ThoughEplingwastheof cialrecipientoftheChampionChamberAward, shesaysit’sreallyanawardfortheentirechamberandhowfarthey’vecome asateam.

“ThisChamberChampionaward mighthavemynameonit,butitwould havenotbeenpossibleifitwasn’tfor myteam,theBoardofDirectors,chamberambassadors,ifitwasn’tforthecity council,forMayorFinley,forChairman McCutcheon,”saidEpling.“Thisisreallyagreattestamenttoourcommunity comingtogetherandsupportinganorganizationthat’sreallytrulybeenrebuilt comingoutofCOVID,andit’sjustbeen anhonortogettobehereatthechamber.Wecallitmagic,chambermagic, andwe’rejusthavingfunwatchingthe chambermagichappen.”

“We’vehadsomanybusinessowners thathavebelievedinuswhenwehada sheetofpaperandadream,”shesaid.

Asforthefuture,theywillhostthe thirdannualCelebrateMadisoninOctober,thesecondannualBacktoSchool Breakfastlaterthissummer,andmore ribboncuttingsthroughouttheyearas theycontinuetoaimtocreatevalueand communityconnectionsforareabusinesses.

“WhenyoulooklongtermattheMadisonchamber,ourfocusisful llingour mission,andthatmissionistocreate communityconnectionsandtogrow businessesandtocontinuetobeaconnector,aconvener,andacatalystfor positivechangewithinourcommunity. Ourteamworkseverydaytomakesure we’reful llingthatmission,”Eplingsaid ofthefuture.

MADISON–Shravan Balajiearnedthe“Best ofFairAward”inthe NorthAlabamaRegional ScienceandEngineering FairorNARSEFatthe UniversityofAlabamain Huntsville.

Shravan,aseventh-graderatLiberty MiddleSchool,earnedthe awardintheJuniorDivisionforgrades6-8with hisproject,“AnInnovativeApproachtoPredict andAnalyzeDiabetesUsingMachineLearning.” HecompetedintheBiomedicalEngineeringand HealthSciencesCategory.

Shravanreceived$500 inprizemoneyfromthe U.S.SpaceandRocket Center. Afterhiswinatregionals,Shravanadvancedto theAlabamaStateScienceandEngineering FairorASEF,wherehe wonsecondplaceinthe BiomedicalEngineering andHealthSciencescategory.Healsoreceiveda spotintheJuniorInnovatorsChallenge.

“Ihaveparticipatedin STEMsummercamps throughwhichIgainedinterestinbiologyandcomputerscience,”Shravan said.“Idecidedtotakeit astepfurtherthisyearby creatingaresearchprojectinthat eld.” HelpingShravanalong theway,DanyaleRagus, aneighth-gradescience teacheratLiberty,mentoredhimandassisted withtheregistrationprocessforthesciencefair.

Shravan’sproject“analyzesvariousfactorsthat contributetodiabetesand usesamachinelearning algorithmtopredictindividuals’likelihoodsof

havingdiabetes.Atthe fair,Iwasjudgedbasedon mypresentation,poster andresearchpaper,”he said.

“Theinspirationbehind creatingthisprojectarose fromobservingthechallengesfacedbyadiabetic friend.Witnessingtheir strugglessparkedmycuriositytodelvedeeper intounderstandingthe diseaseandexploreways inwhichIcouldcontributetoimprovingthesituation,”Shravansaid.

“Participatinginthe fairallowedmetoexplore myinterestsin-depthand discovermypassionfora speci careaofscience,” Shravansaid.“Presentingmyprojecttojudges helpedmeovercomestage frightanddevelopstrong communicationskills.”

WhenShravanwas insixthgrade,hewon thirdplaceforhisproject,“GeneVariationsand TheirImpactonMedicationEf cacy”atASEF. Hewasnominatedforthe 2023ThermoFisherScienti cJuniorInnovators ChallengeorJIC,aprogramoftheSocietyfor Science.

Formerlycalledthe BroadcomMASTERS,the ThermoFisherChallenge isthepremierSTEMcompetitionforU.S.sixththrougheighth-graders. ThermoFisherisanincredibleachievement, withonlythetop10percentofmiddle-school projectsnationwidethat areinvitedtoapplyonline forthenationalcompetition.

HisparentsareBalajiPurushothaman,who worksasaPrincipalProductManageratAdtran Inc.,andSubashiniGopalakrishnan,anengineerat Siemens.

Alfred“Al”Blaschke(b.4January1917)fromTexas,USA,haso ciallyreclaimedhisstatusastheworld’soldestpersontotandemskydive.Alwas106 years327daysold–overthreeyearsolderthanthepreviousrecord–atthetime ofhisjump.He rstbroketherecordin2020,aged103,whenhejumpedoutofa movingplaneat14,000feettocelebratehistwingrandsons’ collegegraduations.

CadetMajorXinLinfromJames Clemenshostedthesecondannual RocketCityRivalryDayonApril 19.LinservesastheBattalionExecutiveOf cerofJamesClemens JROTCJetBattalion,andcurrently heisAlabamaJROTCStatePresident.

“AttheRocketCityRivalryDay, rivalMadisonCitySchools’JROTC programsatBobJonesandJames

Clemenscametogethertocompete inaseriesofsportseventsanddrill todeterminewhoisultimatelythe bestJROTCprograminMadison City,”Linsaid.

“Over100cadetsparticipated, and,withaclosecallfortwoyears inarow,BobJonespulledthrough winningtwofortwo,”Linsaid.The winningunitcankeepaperpetual beltthatsigni estheirstatus.

“Thiseventisoneofthewaysthe twoJROTCunitsengageinfriendly rivalry,be ttingofthehistory-long, county-widerivalry,”Linsaid.“The ArmyNationalGuardprovided usgames,suchasagladiatorpit, rock-climbingwallandfootball toss.”

TheJROTCunitscompetedin afour-by-onerace, agfootball, dodgeball,trackrelays,obstacle courseandtugofwar. “Inaddition,thecadetshadarivalingfundraiserforChick- l-A milkshakestoraisemoneyforboth unitsinprogramfunds,”Linsaid. Allcadetsshowedgreatsportsmanshipanddetermination throughoutthecompetition.Cadets cheeredandencouragedeachother, trulyembodyingthespiritofthe event.

“OurWorldLanguagesprogramsare closingouttheyearonabusynote,with languagecompetitions,testsandotherforeignlanguagechallengesforstudents,”Dr.EdNichols,Superintendent ofMadisonCitySchools,said.

FletcherFamilyandthe 1884“Electrification” ofMadison

MADISON-In1964theFletcherfamilydescendantsprivatelyprinteda36pagebookletwrittenbyOctaviaFletcherFrazier,whowasborninAthens, Alabama,in1875.TheMadisonStation HistoricalPreservationSocietywas grantedpermissiontousethebooklet, andportionsareexcerptedhere.OctaviawastheyoungestchildofDr.RichardMatthewFletcher(1830-1906)and hiswifeRebeckahMason(1832-1909)of Athens.Octavia’sparentsweremarriedin1855.Octaviawastheonlyone oftheirtenchildrenwhowasbornin Athens,whiletwodiedyoung,andthe otherswerebornatBirnamWood,the familyplantationhomeinLimestone Countyat“NubbinRidge”nearMadison.Octavia’sfatherwasborninRichmond,Virginia,theoldestsonofJames NicholasFletcherandhiswifeMatilda G.CheathamwhomovedtoLimestone Countyby1833.Mostofthisfamily’s earlygenerationsinthisareaareburied inMapleHillCemeteryandnotinMadison.

JamesN.FletcherwasborninVirginiain1785andbecamethe rstsheriffofNottinghamCounty,Virginia.AfterservingintheVirginialegislature, JamesmovedhisfamilytoAlabama whenRichardwasonlythreeyearsold. Jameswasmuchwealthierthanmostof hisneighborshere,sohebuiltaplantationandhousecalledAspenDellfor hisfamily.Helateralsogavenearby landforaplantationandhousecalled BirnamWoodtohissonRichard.The Fletcherfamilyhadsettledinthearea whereBurgreenRoadandBrown’sFerryRoadintersecttoday.Theycalledit “NubbinRidge”,accordingtoOctavia’s account,“becausethelandwassopoor …itcouldnotproduceeven‘nubbins’of corn.”Yet,Octavia’srecollectionsareof productive elds,beautifulknolls,and rollingmeadowswithperpetualsprings ofwater.

Dr.FletcherwastheprimaryphysicianfortheareainandaroundMadisonduringtheCivilWaryears,even thoughhealsoservedtheConfederacy inhisbirthplaceofRichmond,VA,and inCulpepperCourthouseofVirginia untilhewassenthometohelptheMadisoncommunity.Hehadbeentutoredat homeinhisearlyyears,by“preceptors” hiredbyhisfatherJames.Oneofthese preceptorswasDr.AlgernonSydney Harris,withwhomRichardM.Fletcher “readmedicine”forseveralyearsafter attendingGreenAcademyinHuntsville. Dr.Harris(1811-1884)isburiedintheold MadisonCityCemetery.RichardFletcherwentontoattendLagrangeCollege beforegoingtostudymedicinefrom1853 untilhisgraduationin1854attheUniversityofPennsylvania.

Octaviawrotethatherfatherwould buyahorseduringthattime,rideit toPhiladelphiaoveraperiodofthree weeks,thensellthehorsewhileattendingtheuniversityeachyear.Attheend ofeachschoolyear,hewouldpurchase anotherhorseinPhiladelphiaandride ithometoAlabamaforanotherthreeweektrip.Octaviarecalledoneofher father’sstoriesofseeingawhiskeystore signinPhiladelphiaduringthoseyears withthenameoftheproprietors,“I. Ketchum”and“U.Cheatham”.

ItwaslateinherownlifethatOctavia detailedhermemoriesofherfather’s lifeinthebookletentitled“DR.RICHARDMATTHEWFLETCHER,1830-1906, ASKETCHOFHISLIFEANDWORKS”. OctaviawasraisedinMadison,because thefamilyhome,BirnamWoodatNubbinRidge,burnedduringherinfancy. Hermemoriesdescribeinvividpersonal detaillifeinthesmalltownthroughout the1880sand1890s,aswellasproviding earlierhistoricalstoriesthatsherecalledhearingfromolderfamilymembers. AmongOctavia’sanecdotesisastory thatrevealstheheartsofherparents andrunscontrarytoplantationlifestereotypesbythemediaofthe1900sand now.Ittellsofthepoisoninganddeath ofDr.Fletcher’s rstbabygirlbyone oftheirslaves.InOctavia’sownwords, “Agreatsorrowwhichleftanindelible scaruponmyfatherandmotherwas thelossoftheir rstbabygirl,whowas accidentallypoisonedbyayoungNegro slavegirlofageseventeen,whomthey andMammyAgnes(anotherslave)were trainingforamaidandseamstress. Mammy,themostreliableinallthe world,wasinchargeofthebaby.MotherandFatherhaddrivenovertosee GrandmotherMason(inAthens).The babywasasleep.Mammywantedsome-

thingfromhercabin,soshetoldElizato watchthebaby,andnottoawakenher. Thebabyawokeandbegantocrysoon afterMammyhadgone.Thebabyhad beenoftensubjecttocholic.Elizahad seenMammygivehercatnipteaand sometimesputadroportwoofparegoric init.She xedthewarmcatnipteaand reachingontheshelfpickedupwhatappearedtobetheparegoricbottle–butit wasalaudanumbottle.Droppingwhat shebelievedtobetheparegoricintothe teashefedthistothebaby.WhenMammyreturned,thechildwasinastupor andneverregainedconsciousness.She wasonlythreemonthsold.No,there wasnopunishmentofthedistracted anddistressedEliza--onlyminglingof tears,pity,andprayers.”

Octaviaincludedastorythatshetitled“Electri cationofMadison”inthe biographyofherfatherandstoriesof herfamily.No,itwasnotaboutimplementationofelectricalpowerandwiringinthetownin1884,butitwasabout aperiodofintenseemotionsinthetown ofMadisonduringtheearlydays.Octavia’s36-pagebookletisquotedbelow totelloftheeventsassociatedwiththe earliestknownmurderinMadison.

“MadisonCounty,especiallythevillage(ofMadison),waselectri edwhen OldMr.Freemanwasfoundmurdered inhisstore.Hewasarespectedandbelovedcitizenandthewholecommunity wasreadytohangthecriminalwhohad stabbedhiminthebackwhilehewas leaningoverthesugarbarrelandwas leftbleedingbehindthecounter.Noone everknewhowmuchmoneyhegot.For daystheof cerswereonhistrail.Finally,wordcamethattheguiltypartyhad beenfound.ItwasaNegroinTennessee,andhehadconfessed.Theywere bringinghimtoMadisontotakehimon the5:00o’clocktraintoHuntsvilletojail. Thecommunityranwild.Fatherand theboys(Octavia’ssixbrothers)immediatelyadvisedalltheNegroesweknew topassthewordtoalltheotherNegroes tostayoutofsightuntilthingsquieted. TheysenttrustyNegroesoutonthepike andotherroadstoturnbackanycomingtoMadison,knowingtheturnevents mighttakeandwishingtoprotectthe innocent.”

“Asthetimeforthetraincarrying thecapturedmurderdrewnearand thecrowdincreased,abouttwenty- ve seemedtoformthemselvesintoamob whichwasturbulentanddeterminedto hangtheculprit.Theywerearmedwith pistols,guns,andknives.Theywere notallrabble.Somewerewell-known citizens.Theygrewbolderandmore threateningastheygatheredaroundthe railroadtrack.Fathersaiditwasatense andanxiousmoment.Theminister,surroundedbyagroupofpleadingmenand boys,wastryingtopersuadethemobto obeythelaw,todisbandandlettheofcersdotheirduty.Themumblingand threatscontinued.Syd(Octavia’suncle AlgernonSydneyFletcher--anattorney whohadbeenaCaptainintheConfederateArmyandlaterVicePresidentof theFirstNationalBankinHuntsville) climbeduponafreightcarwhichhad beenswitchedontothesidetrackbehind thedepot.Hebeganbysaying,‘Boys,I gotupherewhereyoucouldseemeand hearme.Iknowpracticallyeveryone ofyou.Wearefriends.Weallknewand lovedMr.Freeman.Ihelpedtobury him.Thereisnomanwhodeploredhis deathmorethanIdo.

Iwantthecriminalhanged,butwe arecitizensofalaw-abidingstateand apeacefulcommunity.Wedonotwant blooduponourhandsortobeknownas lawbreakers.Mr.Freemanwouldwant thelawtobeobserved.’Thislaststatementseemedto ndaresponsivechord. Sydcontinuedappealingtothebetter sense,ashecouldseehehadgottentheir attention.Finally,heconcluded,‘The trainwillbehereinafewminutes.Iam comingdowntojoinyou,andwewill allstayonthissideofthetracksandlet theof cershaveroomtoputthatman onthetrainandtakehimtojail.The lawwillhanghim.Letusalltrytobeas calmaspossible.’”

“Hecamedownandjoinedthecrowd. Whenthetrainpulledin,theyallstayed ontheirsideofthetrack.Bydueprocessoflaw,theculpritwashanged. Madisonwasapeacefulcommunity again.”

WhileOctaviadidnotprovideadate fortheevent,subsequentresearchof oldnewspaperaccountsprovedthatthe murderoccurredjustbeforeChristmas in1884andthatthevictimwasgrocer NathanielFreemanatage66.Even whentwomoremurderscrossingracial lineswerecommittedinthetownin1903

and1914,Madisonremainedalaw-abiding,peacefulcommunity,and“Judge Lynch”neverruledhere. SydFletcherwentonduringhislifetimetoassistDr.WilliamHooperCouncill,FounderofAlabamaA&MUniversity,asoneofthreenotableandprominent HuntsvillemenwithMadisonrootswho guidedandprotectedCouncill’scareer. Additionally,therewereseveralotherphysiciansofthetimewhoserved bothBlacksandWhitesduringtheperiodandwhomwereallmembersofthe Fletcherfamilyorsomewhatrelatedto it.Theyweremostlywell-established friendsandcollaboratorsintreatingthe townspeopleandthenearbypopulation ofbothraces.SomeoftheseotherphysicianswereRichardMasonFletcher(a sonofDr.RichardMatthewFletcher), WaddyTate,AlgernonSydneyHarris, J.J.Dement,EldridgeRawlinsMason, JohnFletcherMoore,AlfredMoore,and DavidMoore. WhenDr.RichardMatthewFletcher died,hewasbeingtreatedbyhisfriend Dr.IsaacFoxDeloney.Dr.Fletcherwas sowell-lovedbyallinthecommunity thatwhenthefuneralprocessionstarted fromtheMethodistChurchonChurch StreettowardHuntsvilleandMapleHill Cemetery,thewagonsandfoot-traf c ofthecrowdofBlacksandWhitesintermingledandstretchedmorethana milealongtheroad,accordingtoOctavia’sbooklet.Octaviaherselflivedin Birminghamafterhermarriage,andit ispresumedthatsheisburiedthere,but hersonwhoauthorizeduseofherbookletlivedinTuscaloosaatthetime.
