MadisonCitySchoolsspokespersonJohnPecksaidHEMSI,MadisonPoliceandMadisonFirewere quicklyoncampustoaddressthe situation.
Thestudentwastransportedthe studenttoHuntsvilleHospitalfor WomenandChildren. Wednesdayafternoon,Liberty PrincipalShannonBrownsentan emailtoparentsupdatingthemon thesituation.

MADISON–AbrandnewfestivalisbringingthecityofMadison togetherforfunandservicethis weekend,andit’sallorganizedby localhighschoolstudents.
TheinauguralMadFestishappeningthisSaturday,May4attheMadisonCityStadium.Itwillhaveall thetrappingsofafunfestivalwith artisanvendors,hotairballoon rides,foodtrucks,andacarshow withtheaddedtwistofcommunity serviceopportunities.That’sright. Thisisnoordinaryfestival.It’sa festivalthatunitesandgivesbackto thecommunity.
Notonlythat,butMadFesthas beenorganizedentirelybyBob JonesHighSchoolandJamesClemensHighSchoolstudents,showing offtheabilitiesofyoungMadison residents.
“MadFestisanythingbutyouraveragefestival.Forstarters,itisENTIRELYstudentled.Everylittlede-
tailhasbeenmeticulouslythought outbyoutstandingstudentsatboth BobJonesandJamesClemens. Also,theentiredaywillemphasize oursloganof“TwelveSchools,One City,” CommunicationsDirectorforthe festivalandaBobJonesstudent,SimonAdkins,commented.
Thesestudentsareonamission todogoodinthecityofMadison andunitethetwohighschools,that areoftenseenasrivals.
“MadisonCitySchoolsishometo twoofthehighestperforminghigh schoolsinournation.Withincredibleacademicsandoutstandingextracurricularopportunities,MadisonCitytrulypreparesstudents forthefuture.I’vewatchedasboth schoolshavemadetremendouseffortstobetterourcommunityand region.However,collaborativeeffortsbetweenthetwoschoolshave oftenbeendif cult,”FestivalDirector,BobJonessenior,andMVP’s YouthVolunteeroftheYearAndrewCrockersaid.

MADISON–Cityparks, downtownstreets,school campuses...evenChickl-A.Theseandmany othertopicsinterested fourth-gradersatMadisonElementarySchool whenCindiWhitworth Sandersonpresented “TheHistoryofMadison” onApril23.
AnativeofMadison, Sandersoncantraceher familylineageinMadison to1828.“Iliketoshare Madison’shistorybecauseofmyrootsIhave astrongbeliefinpreservingthepast,”shesaid.Beforeretirement,Sandersoncompiledabookabout MadisonElementary’s evolutiontotoday.
“ItoldthemthatI’ma MadisonHornet,justlike them,becauseIretired fromMadisonElementaryalmostnineyearsago,” Sandersonsaid.“Iwasin the rstgraduatingclass atBobJonesHighSchool. Ourclasswillhaveour 50thclassreunionthis year.”
Sandersonexplained thatCherokee,Chickasaw andCreekNativeAmericanssharedhunting groundsaroundMadison butdidn’thavepermanentvillagesinNorth CentralAlabama. In1818,JohnCartwrightsettledatwhat’s nowPalmerPark.Many pioneersstayedforthe richsoilandabundant springs.Madisonwas foundedasarailroad townalongtheMemphis &CharlestonRailroadin themid-1850’s.
“Pioneersweredrawn byconditionsconducive tocottonfarming.Merchantsweredrawnby farmers’wealth,”Sandersonsaid.
Madison’swesternperimeterwascalledNubbinsRidge,nowJames ClemensHighSchool’s campus.Clemensbought 45lotsandsold15before
hisdeathin1860.
Thislandexchangeled toClemens’title,‘Founder ofMadison.’HewasrelatedtoauthorSamuelClemens(akaMarkTwain) andfatherofU.S.Sen. JeremiahClemens.
JamesClemenswanted thetownnamed“Clemens Depot”;however,railroad mapslabeledthelocation as“MadisonStation.” Thenameagainchanged to“Madison”atincorporationin1869,Sanderson said.
TheiconicRoundhouse wasbuiltoverthetown’s wellnearMainStreet Cafein1898.Thestructureservedasthemayor’s of ce,cityhall,card-playingparlorand‘pop-up’ barbershop.
Aftertheoriginal’s demolitionin1936,the Roundhouse’sreplicawas builtin1986byvolunteers duringtheMadisonStreet Festival.Today,Madison StationHistoricPreservationSocietymaintainsthe building.
“The rstorganized publicschoolwasMadisonMaleandFemale Academyin1885,”Sandersonsaid.Next,Madison TrainingSchooloriginallystoodnearcurrent-day AnimalTraxuntil1907 whenitwasmovedon logs,likelytocurrent-day MadisonElementary’s parkinglot.
In1924,theschoolwas renamed“MadisonHigh School.”In1936,anew buildingcosting$55,000 openedforMHS,nowthe siteofyourschool,MadisonElementary,Sandersonsaid.
“WhenMadisonTrainingSchoolwastorndown, whatwasthelumberused for?Acityhallwasbuilt onMartinStreet;partwas usedforanArnettStreet house,”Sandersonsaid.

OnceanEnglishlanguagestudentherselfinelementaryschool, Gowderwasinspiredtostartthe GlobalMindschaptertohelpthe EnglishlanguagestudentsatJames Clemensmakefriendsand ndcommunityinthegreaterstudentbody.

MADISON–“AnEveningintheDesertwith OperationEagleClaw” willassemblesevenU.S. Armyveteransaspanelistswhowereinthe missiontofreeAmerican hostagescapturedin1979 byIran.
Redstone-Huntsville ChapteroftheAssociationoftheUnitedStates ArmyorAUSAishosting thesessiononMay8from 5to9p.m.attheJackson Center,6001MoquinDrive NWinHuntsville.This eventmarksthethird timethatAUSAandArmy HeritageCenterFoundationhaveraisedfundsfor theU.S.VeteransMemorialMuseum.
Thesessionwilldate backtoNov.4,1979,when Iranianmilitantsseized theU.S.EmbassyinTehranandabducted53hostages.Prolongednegotiationsensuedtofreethe hostages.
U.S.PresidentCarter eventuallyorderedthe IranHostageRescuemissionwiththeArmy’sDeltaForce,sailors,airman andmarinestoattempt therescueonApril24,
1980.After444days,the hostagecrisis nallyended. “Iwanttostressthat ‘AnEveningintheDesertwithOperationEagle Claw’willbeahistoric event,astheseveterans haveneverbeforetold theirstoryinpublic,” AUSARedstone-HuntsvilleChapterPresident MarcJacobsonsaid.“The lessonslearnedfromOEC promptedtheestablishmentofanewmulti-serviceorganization.The U.S.SpecialOperations Command(USSOCOM) becameoperationalin April1987.”
“Eachservicenowhas itsownspecialoperations forcesunderUSSOCOM’s overallcontrol,”Jacobson said.“Alsocreatedwas the160thSpecialOperationsAviationRegiment orSOARNightStalkers. ArtisticDirectorStephenTylerDavis wroteanddirected“SpaceMonkeys!,” whichwillroundoutFantasyPlayhouse’sall-originalseason.

Theshow’splotinvolves vekids inHuntsvillewhoconveneeveryfull moonfortheirsecretspacesociety.This month,theyseektoinductanewmember.However,theinducteehasnever heardofAmerica’sinfamous“Space Monkeys,”sothe veembarkonsharing the65-year-oldcourageousstory.
“In1959,twobravemonkeys–Baker andAble--leadthechargeforspaceexploration.Buckleupandholdontight foranadventureofgalacticmagnitude. Astoryoffriendship,bravery,sacri ce anddreamingbig,thisworld-premiere playwillinspireallages,”Rodricksaid.
In1959,theU.S.neededaColdWar winandthecountrywaseyeingspaceight.Andsoapairofmismatched monkeysfoundthemselvesbundledup andplacedinaJupitermissile.Able andBakerbecamethe rstprimatesto survivespace ightduringasuborbital predawn ightonMay28,1959. Theirsurvivalmadetheminstantcelebrities,althoughspace ightwasnot themostdramaticpartoftheirstories. Toannouncetheirsuccessful ight, NASAunveiledAbleandBakertojournalistsinthesameroomwherejusta monthpriortheyhadintroducedthe Mercury7asthecountry’s rsthuman astronautcandidates. Ablediedfourdaysafterthe ight
fromareactiontotheanestheticgiven duringsurgerytoremoveanelectrode, butBakerlivedtobreaktherecordfor oldestlivingsquirrelmonkey.
In1971,MissBakermovedtotheU.S. Space&RocketCenterinHuntsville,Alabama,wheresheentertainedmuseum visitorsanddrew100–150lettersaday fromschoolchildrenThe1977birthday celebrationsbroughtballoons,camera ashes,andtheregularfareofcottage cheeseforMissBaker.
In1982,centerdirectorEdBuckbee said,“Bakerdelightsvisitorseveryday withherenergyandantics.”
Incelebrationofthe25thanniversary ofherspace ight,Bakerwastreatedto arubberduckand,herfavorite,strawberrygelatinwithbananas,alongwith well-wishesfromthousandsofpeople.

“Wehavegrownfromjustthe onebuildingtonowsix.Wehave 90apartmentstotal,andwehave alongstandingrelationshipinthe community,”KristyBryant,ExecutiveDirectorofTheMadisonVillage,said.
Individualsinthemainbuilding (orresidents)haveassistedliving support,whichincludesthreemeals eachday.“Wecheckinonthemat minimumeverytwohours.Wehelp withanydailylivingneeds,”Bryant said.
TheMadisonVillagealsohas standaloneapartmentsforpeople whoaresuitedforindependentliving.“Wehave vebuildingsforindependentliving,with12unitsineach complex,”Bryantsaid.“All(ofthese unitsare)locatedononelevel.We haveone-andtwo-bedroomunits.”
Whenthecommunitywas rst opened,“westartedwiththeassist-
ed-living(option),and,afewyears later,weaddedour rstcottage with12apartments.Then,overtime wehaveaddedtheotherbuildings. Thelastbuildingopenedabout19 monthsagoinindependentliving,” Bryantsaid.

Historicalpublicrecordssoonrevealed thatR.W.CrutcherwasReubenWilliam HenryCrutcher.
Reubenwasmarriedin1833toMary Bailey,adaughterofJamesandSarah Bailey,whoweretheoriginalownersof thelandaroundthelittlecemetery.The Baileyslivedinandoperatedatwo-storyinnandstagestopontheroadfrom HuntsvilletoMooresville.Thatinnstill standsatashortdistancefromthecemetery,buttotallyencasedinsideacurrent privateresidence.MaryBaileyCrutcherdiedin1848atage35,andshe(withat leasttwooftheirchildren)isalsoburied inthecemeterybesideherhusbandReuben.AsingletombstonehastheinscriptionsforMaryandherchildrenSarahE. Beforepassingin1971,MaryIrbyMastincompiledabookletofalmost200pagesaboutthegenealogiesoftheCrutcher, Bolling,andSpraginsfamilies.Mary Mastin,bornin1883,wasadaughter ofAlexanderandLucyAnneSpragins. Mary’spaternalgrandparentswere RobertStithBollingSpraginsandSarah AgnesCrutcher(1835-1916).ThisSarah A.Crutcherwasahalf-sisteroftheReubenCrutherwhomarriedMaryBailey. TherewereseveralmennamedReuben Crutcherintheareathen,butthefocus nowisupontheonewhomarriedMary Bailey.
However,Ihaveinfactwithinthelast yearorsohelpedtoclearanothersmall cemeteryinnortheasternLimestone CountywhereanotherReubenCrutcher isburiedwithhisfamilyandwithmembersoftheMcCargoandNewbyfamilies. WithoutMaryMastin’sbooklet,itisalmostimpossibletokeepfocusedupon speci cReubenCrutchermen,separatingthemthroughoutthepublicrecords. Thankfully,MaryMastin’sbookofthe recollectionsofSusanDupreeCrutcher Lawlercoversallofthem.Susanwasthe widowofJohnLawlerandadaughterof WilliamHenryCrutcherandhiswife MaryBaileyCrutcher.

UponSusanna’sdeath,William Crutcherandhischildrenreturnedfrom KentuckytoVirginia,wherehemarried Mrs.TabithaBruceHarrisFulks,awidowwithtwosmallchildren.ThatfamilyafterwardcametoMadisonCounty before1822,initiallysettlingintheNew MarketandPlevnaarea.Severalother descendantsofHenryCrutcheralsohad comeearliertoMadisonandLimestone Counties,resultinginthemultiplemen namedReubenCrutcherbeingfoundthe area. WhenI rstexploredtheFarley-CrutcherCemeteryabout30years ago,itwasheavilyovergrownwithlarge trees,briars,poisonivy,andothervegetation.Afterseveralvisitstothecemetery, locatedaboutaquartermilesouthofthe southernendofMillerBoulevard,Ibegantoinventorythetombstonesagainst DorothyScottJohnson’slistingsinher 1971book“CEMETERIESOFMADISONCOUNTY,ALABAMA,VOL.I”. Severalofthetombstoneswerebroken, withpiecesunderneathleavesanddirt. Somewerejusttotallymissing.Oneof themorepuzzlingbrokenstoneshadthe name“HENRYE.”onthetopportion.It precisely tontoanearbylargerportion thatcontinuedtheinscriptionas“WIFE OFA.B.CRUTCHER;DIEDAPRIL17, 1886;AGE36YRS,3MS,&18DS”.If thenamehadbeenspelledas“Henri” (forHenrietta)Iwouldnothavebeenso intrigued,buta“Henry”asawifewas different.Ofcourse,laterIwouldlearn thatsuchnamesas“Alfred”andothernormallymasculinenameswerein thosedayssometimesusedforfemales, andvice-versa.Still,Henry’stombstone caughtmyattentionforfurtherresearch. ResearchproducedthemarriagelicensedocumentingthatHenryEllenGay marriedAndrewBentonCrutcher(a CSAveteran)in1866inMadisonCounty. CourtrecordsalsoshowthatHenrywas borninSouthCarolinabutshemoved herefromRankinCountyofMississippi, whereshelivedbeforehermarriageto Andrew.SheownedconsiderablepropertyinMississippiandfoughttoretainit asherownincourthere.Otherrecords showthatshediedof“apoplexy”.Beside hergraveInoticedtwounmarkedgrave depressions.Laterexplorationandprobingproducedanotherburiedtombstone. Itwasfor“MattieF.Crutcher,9/15/1867 –1/26/1884,daughterofA.B.andH. E.Crutcher”.Therewasstillnostone discoveredfortheothergrave,butitis almostcertainlythegraveofAndrew BentonCrutcher,asfamilyrecordsstate thathewasburiedbesidehis rstwife, Henry. Follow-upresearchintoHenryEllenCrutcher’shistoryrevealedthatA. B.Crutcher’ssecondwifewasNannie Johnson,whomovedwithherchildren toShreveport,LouisianaafterAndrew’s death.A.B.wasbornin1838anddied in1915ofbloodpoisoning.Theresearch atthispointwascomplicatedbythefact thattherewasanotherA.B.Crutcher wholivedintheareaatthesametime andwasaboutthesameage.TheotherA. B.wasAdolphusBakerCrutcher,ason ofWilliamRadfordCrutcher,whowasa sonofanotherReubenCrutcher,brotheroftheWilliamwhowasthefatherof theReubenwhomarriedMaryBailey. CorrectivemeasuresareneededatRSA-306to1)reduceorpreventhumanexposuretogroundwatercontaminatedwithiron, 1-methylnaphthalene,andbenzenesuchthatregulatorylimits areachievedornounacceptablehazardorriskispresent;and 2)reducethepresenceoffree-phasepetroleumproducttothe maximumextentpracticabletoreducethepotentialfordissolution ofconstituentsintogroundwater.TheselectedcorrectivemeasuresforRSA-306arepassivepetroleumproductrecovery(absorbentsocks),petroleumproductnaturalsourcezonedepletion, monitorednaturalattenuation,long-termmonitoring,andlanduse controls.Theanalyticalprogramwillconsistofthesite-related contaminantsofconcern,aswellasnaturalattenuationparameters.Groundwatermonitoringandreportingwillbeconducted for30yearsoruntilconcentrationsingroundwaterreachcleanup goals.Itisassumedthatpetroleumproductvolumeswilldiminish throughtime,andafterapproximately10years,therewillbe insufcientvolumetoberecoveredbytheabsorbentsocks.
RSA-308,ExteriorSumpatBuilding7120,islocatedinthesoutheasternportionofRedstoneArsenal.TheexteriorsumpanddrainagechannelassociatedwithBuilding7120historicallycollected propellantwastesfrom oordrainslocatedwithinthetestbays. CorrectivemeasuresareneededatRSA-308to1)monitorthe potentialforperchloratetoleachfromsubsurfacesoilstogroundwateratlevelsresultingingroundwaterconcentrationsabovethe cleanupgoalsand2)addressunacceptableriskstopotentialreceptorsfromexposuretoperchlorateandexplosivecompounds (i.e.RDX)ingroundwater.TheproposedremedyatRSA-308involvespassivereductionintheconcentrationsofcontaminants ofconcerninsubsurfacesoilandgroundwaterbynaturalabiotic andbioticattenuationprocesses.Continuednaturalin ltrationof precipitationthroughthesubsurfacesoilwill ushperchlorateinto thegroundwater.Naturalbioticandabioticprocessesinsoil and groundwaterwillthenreducegroundwatercontaminationtobelow cleanupgoals.Periodicgroundwatermonitoringwillbeconducted totracktheprogressofthenaturalattenuation.Closurefor subsurfacesoilsandgroundwaterwillbeachievedafter19yearsorwhen theconcentrationsingroundwaterreachthecleanupgoal. TheResourceConservationandRecoveryActfacilityinvestigation orCorrectiveMeasuresImplementationPlan ndingsforallthree sitesshowthatnocontaminationispresentinsurfacemedia that wouldposeunacceptableriskstoresidentialorcommercial receptorsortheenvironment.
