Bob Labbe is a lifelong resident of the Huntsville community. He has been in the local news media for 46 years, a multi-award-winning journalist in television, radio and print media. He is a member of the Huntsville-Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame and has been nominated for both the Alabama Press Association and Alabama Music halls of fame. Bob has hosted a radio program, Reelin’ in The Years, for 28 years on WLRH-FM Public Radio. He has also been a local high school basketball referee for 27 years and was a high school football referee for 15 years. Bob is an avid sports fan and collector of 45 rpm records. He once boxed Muhammad Ali and was the reporter who asked the famed Paul Bear Bryant his last question as coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide.

A graduate of Mississippi State University, Gregg Parker relocated to Madison with Intergraph Corporation in 1990 with wife Brenda and son Andy. For 15 years Gregg wrote for “Madison Spirit” and “Limestone Spirit” sections in “The Huntsville Times.”

His articles have been published in numerous chamber of commerce publications, “Southern Family Magazine” and “Life on the Water.” Gregg considers it a privilege to document Madison’s coming of age in his hundreds of articles for “The Madison Record” and “Madison Living” magazine. Gregg enjoys spoiling his rescue dachshund, Francis Underwood Parker; binge-watching Netflix series; and visiting Andy and wife Saadia, both physicians, in Nashville, Tenn.

Joshua Berry, photographer Joshua Berry has a degree in biology and works full time as an aquatic instructor for the City of Huntsville. Not many magazine articles I’ve written have touched me quite like the feature this month on Chad and Kelley Whitworth and how they have turned their story of loss and personal tragedy into a blessing for other families. The Madison couple endured what no people should have to: the loss of a child. Their second son, Wells Clayton Whitworth, was born into Heaven June 11, 2018.

Interviewing the Whitworths and their 4-year-old son Miller about losing Wells was an emotional couple of hours for us all, but they have a beautiful story of turning their tragedy into triumph.

Speaking of triumph, we also feature Mike Winkler in this issue. Winkler is the minister of the Madison Church of Christ. He struggles daily with Parkinson’s disease but is determined to show others that God is in control of his situation and that He is able to turn the trials of life into something good.

Downtown’s newest style-setter, South & Pine Home wants to help people with the vision for their homes and supply confidence to attain that vision.

Owners Alan and Meghann Delashaw said they strive for a welcoming atmosphere for customers. “We are not just a store – we are a family,” Meghann said. “We’re so happy to extend that family to the Madison community. The store is

our way of sharing a piece of our home with you.”

The store’s “freshly curated Southern style” focuses on Southern flair that suits everyone. “We hope when you come in to South & Pine Home that you find something that you can bring into your home. That could be paper plates or a candle … all the way to a beautiful farmhouse table for your dining room,” Meghann said.

The store boasts three distinct styles of tables in-house: a rustic, whitewashed farmhouse look; wood-and-metal round design; and wood in classic lines. To mix and match with tables, dining chairs range from X-backed in white or wood to cane-backed upholstered and parson chairs in linen slipcovers.

Other seating includes matching side chairs Meghann said are perfect for a living space or bedroom. Various wood or metal side tables complement a room

perfectly. “We carry some upholstered benches – so versatile and work by a bed or table,” Meghann said. Dressers and buffets also are available. “Beautiful sideboards are something that I love and have a variety in the shop. Wood ones with glass, white with stained tops, even one made with reclaimed wood so that every piece used to craft it is unique and tells a story.”

For lighting, the store has lamps, lanterns and ceiling fixtures. Wall decor

can define an atmosphere with wreaths, metal or wooden signs and mirrors. To dress a ceramic vase, jug or pottery piece, try magnolia stems, cotton or dogwood stems and decor balls.

“For kitchenware, we have plates, serving utensils, trays, tea towels and canisters,” Meghann said. “Our soft goods include pillows, blankets, aprons and napkins.” Shoppers also can browse clocks, picture frames, candlesticks/ candles, coasters and soaps.

“The mission of South & Pine Home is to allow our style and design to be attainable to people in our community. Sometimes, you can see styles online or on TV, but it’s difficult to recreate that look in your own home. We are here to help,” Meghann explained. “We can help you decorate a room, put together a beautiful centerpiece – even find a gift for an upcoming event and more.”

The Delashaws said they put lots of thought into naming their store. “Pine” can mean “to miss,” as a person pines for the South, “whether you grew up here or were just passing through,” Meghann said.

The double meaning, of course, is also in reference to the endless rows of pine trees throughout the South, evoking memories of “the trees’ smell on a scorching summer day and their poise through our grey winters,” she added.

Including the word “Home” was important, Meghann said, because “we want to share our ‘home’ with everyone we come across.”

Meghann and Alan both graduated from Bob Jones High School – 2005 and 2006, respectively – and the University of Alabama with bachelor’s degrees in business – 2009 and 2010, respectively. They have four sons: Noble, 6, kindergarten; Hughes, 4, prekindergarten; Brence, 2 in November; and Aldridge, 6 months. “Our boys are all the good parts of each of us,” Alan said.

During the past eight years, in addition to welcoming four children, the Delashaws have built a custom home; started a small booth selling re-purposed furniture and handpainted signs; sold their first home; bought an old home with lots of charm; renovated and sold that house; and bought a new house.

Then Meghann started working as an interior decorator, opened another booth with home decor, modified their new house “because no one likes cookie cutter” and started a small business.

When Patricia Garcia opened her Fresh Starts Café in Madison a couple of months ago, she blended the perfect ingredients together – the ability to truly help others in a way she is passionate about and meet a community need at the same time.

Because of her upbringing to appreciate eating healthy and her immense love for the relaxing atmosphere of quaint coffee shops, Garcia found herself faceto-face with an idea: There were plenty of options for coffee shops in Madison/ Huntsville and a few healthy eating choices, but to find it all under one roof was a rarity. Garcia took a bold step, and Fresh Starts Café in Madison was created – a perfect blend of both.

“I was wanting to start a business of my own,” Garcia said. “I like to create things, and I have a passion for healthy eating. So, why not make a go of it?”

Garcia said she has set out to provide a safe alternative for eating out. Fresh Starts Café, located at 7559 Highway 72 W., Suite 111, near the corner of Highway 72 and Nance Road, is a self-described “mom and pop” café and kitchen serving a menu composed entirely of organic, natural and non-GMO ingredients.

Customers are met with a relaxing ambiance as they order a fresh cup of hot coffee or tea and a made-fromscratch breakfast burrito or the smashed avocado toast topped with organic hemp seeds and micro greens. With a mixture of organic food and homemade recipes, Garcia said her goal is to offer a meal diners can trust to provide their bodies with optimal fuel. “Our unique menu has something for everybody, from our vegetarian bowls to keto-friendly options like our popular primal bowl and keto coffee,” she said.

The café offers a wide range of delicious, healthy meals – like the Smoked Salmon Toast, a Norwegian wild-caught salmon with a blend of smashed avocado, lemon zest, spinach and purple onions. It’s a festive dish full of flavor that has been perfected from Garcia’s family kitchen through the years. “I grew up that way,” Garcia said, explaining the recipes she uses come from her family’s own heritage. “My mother raised us on homemade, healthy and very flavorful meals made with fresh ingredients and non-processed foods.”

One of Fresh Starts Café’s most popular dishes, the breakfast burrito, is no ordinary burrito. It’s a mixture of quality natural ingredients: bacon, free-range eggs, tri-

color bell peppers, avocados and cheese topped with cilantro. Another favorite, Alma’s Bowl, is a grilled chicken dish with white rice, mango pico, mixed greens, cilantro and a sweet potato seasoned with salt and pepper.

A wide selection of entrees includes the chicken fajitas, another favorite among customers. It consists of three tacos with chicken, cilantro, onions and a choice of green or red spicy sauce. There is also the steak and chicken tacos de la calle, tacos, burritos, quesadillas, various panini sandwiches and assorted bowls. Being a mother, Garcia has also created a children’s menu that comes from her experience with her own child.

Then there’s the coffees. The café offers traditional espresso choices like latte, cappuccino, cordato, mocha, macchiato, double shot espresso and regular coffee, as well as specialty drinks, like keto coffee, matcha latte, chai latte, homemade horchata latte and hot chocolate. Fresh Starts also features a variety of shroom brews, including a mushroom matcha latte mix, a mushroom cacao reishi and a mushroom elixir with chaga latte.

The entire menu comes from Garcia’s belief that eating healthy changes lives.

“My family saw what a huge difference it made emotionally, psychically and

in the way we respond to people,” she said. “We believe it has become all too common for businesses to cut corners at the expense of their consumers. We care about the health and well-being of our community, and our answer to the issues of our time is to dance to the beat of a different drum, get back to nature and be the change we want to see. We seek to pioneer a new industry standard we hope will ripple into ever-greater effects and a brighter future for all.”

Body Creations Sports Performance and Fitness aims to provide just what the name indicates: a wide range of strength training and performance enhancement services to build and sculpt the physical stature of any amateur or professional athlete.

Body Creations also means helping anyone who wants to look and feel better about themselves through a barrage of physical and mental training techniques provided by Andy McCloy, owner of the elite business located on Madison Boulevard near the Huntsville International Airport. “We don’t push extreme transformation; we deal with slow progression from the most elite athlete to those who just want to get or stay in shape,” said McCloy.

After opening his business in Huntsville in 2001, McCloy moved to Madison in 2005 and has been at the current location seven years. With more than 200 current clients, McCloy has also assisted numerous professional and college athletes in their endeavors to be at the top of their game, but the 40-year-old McCloy said he is most proud of how many high school athletes he has helped progress to be able to earn college scholarships. The number of those gaining a leg up on the competition is in the hundreds.

“We’re recognized across the country and parts of the world for our longevity of helping others and the results that came with it,” added McCloy. “I feel this is a place for mentorship, and we’re dedicated to make athletes better versions of themselves.”

Body Creations provides a variety of programs, starting with those for ages 1215. Young people learn weight training, flexibility and how to control their body weight, filling in the gaps school programs sometimes miss and supplementing what the athletes do in school.

in an array of sports. Numerous collegiate stars and professional athletes, including some currently in the National Football League from Madison such as Reggie Ragland and Jordan Matthews, have and continue to build their conditioning with McCloy.

McCloy emphasized he is also seriously interested in helping the common person – not necessarily elite athletes. He has several programs designed for those who want to be the best they can be, at any age. A metabolic blast program puts a large group of adults through a battery of workouts. Another program centers on strength performance and fat loss, and

McCloy also offers one-on-one workouts with one of the several coaches he has on staff. “We evaluate what you need, prescribe the programs for each person and assist them all the way to success,” said McCloy. “Everyone has an inner-athlete, and we want to assist to make each person feel better about themselves and become that elite person we all want to be.”

Body Creations employs five coaches who help provide a systematic and comprehensive training system, that has proven to be successful: Chris Vermylia, Chris Tate, Kelly Fields, Kevin Perry and Cameron Finley. McCloy’s father, Steve McCloy, manages business operations.

Of the adults who have joined the programs at Body Creations, 60 percent are female. McCloy said he understands the concepts and philosophy of what every person needs in their quest to be better, no matter their level of physical fitness.

McCloy has been a highly-soughtafter guest speaker and seminar host at numerous health and fitness symposiums around the world. This October, he will be hosting an informative seminar titled Better Human Workshop, and in November he is hosting renowned performance coach Brett Bartholomew, who will come to Madison to share his knowledge and be an inspiration to all. Both events are open to the public.

Besides dedicating his professional career to helping individuals become better human beings, McCloy also operates a consulting company called Tribe Mentorship, which, he said “is designed to help small businesses, like ours, to survive.”

Of the hundreds of individuals who have made their way to Body Creations, McCloy has one client who has had two battles with cancer and two knee surgeries, who still continues to train and credits strength training with helping him fight back against all the odds. “That client even has our business logo tattooed on his leg to indicate we’ve helped change his life for the better,” said McCloy.

One of our KTECH students this fall semester is Takia. She is a foster youth.

“I have moved from home to home since age 6.

My parents never finished high school. I lost my sister and found myself feeling as if there was no point in even trying to do anything in life, and I went off track when it came to my education and well-being,” Takia said.

Takia was able to refocus and finish a year of college studying nursing, but with the clock ticking as she was six months from aging out of foster care, she knew she had to get a skill set to provide for herself.

“I had no relatives or anyone to help me, and I knew there was no way I was going to be able to live off a Domino’s job. My social worker and I immediately began to look for ways to learn a skill that could provide a stable income.”

Takia and her social worker found out about KTECH and set up a tour. “From the moment I walked in the doors, I felt welcome,” she said. “That day I met everyone and quickly realized that this was

more than just a group of people working together; (it was) a family. I loved the environment and energy.”

Takia passed the entrance exam and was given the opportunity to come to KTECH! “I got a call from KTECH about three weeks before classes started, and they told me there was this home for girls called Davidson Farms, and they would love to keep me.”

We were able to get Takia moved into her own room at the Farm just in time for KTECH’s fall session.

“The past few weeks have been amazing. It is much more than just a classroom; (it’s) a place where lives are transformed and futures are made,” Takia said. “The journey was very long but worthwhile, and I have five new little sisters, and I love them. I’m one step closer to a fantastic career.

I am so grateful for the vision of Kids to Love and the potential they saw in me.”

The morning of June 11, 2018, Chad and Kelley Whitworth’s lives were forever changed.

With the loss of their full-term, unborn son, the couple along with their son Miller, their friends and their family were faced with their worst nightmare.

Wells had been perfectly healthy just days before. Kelley was 39 weeks pregnant with the couple’s second child when an ultrasound showed a 7.5-pound, chubby-cheeked baby with good vitals and a strong heartbeat. Before her scheduled cesarean section on what was supposed to be a happy birthday, Chad and Kelley were devastated to learn Wells had inexplicably passed away. More than a year later, and after genetic and chromosomal testing, they still have no answers. “That’s probably the toughest part of it,” Chad said. “I don’t know if having an answer would make it any easier, though.”

“Everything was perfect. If something had been genetically wrong that pointed us to an answer, that wouldn’t make it any better,” Kelley added, her eyes brimming with tears.

“The loss would still be terrible.”

From the very worst scenario the pair could have imagined, and through family support and a lot of prayer, Kelley and Chad have turned their tragedy into a story of triumph that has helped them in their healing process as well as been blessing to other families in Madison County.

Kelley said Wells’ funeral service and burial were paid for out of pocket by their supportive families so the couple could grieve without having to worry about finances. It was that support that made them wonder what people who don’t have support systems do in times of infant loss. Shortly after enduring the loss of Wells, Kelley and Chad set out to help people who have been through similar situations by starting a memorial fund through the Huntsville Hospital Foundation. The Wells Clayton Memorial Fund helps families pay for funeral expenses and grief counseling.

The soon-to-be-501(c)3 organization hosted a memorial pheasant shoot in Madison earlier this year and raised more than $20,000 to benefit families who suffer infant loss.

There’s no stopping the Whitworths now.

The couple has big plans for the future of their organization: They want to expand and offer services to people in similar situations all over north Alabama.

In 1988 President Ronald Regan proclaimed the month of October as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, and it’s a month that is now near and dear to Chad and Kelley.

Approximately a million pregnancies yearly in the United States end in early pregnancy loss, stillbirth or the death of the newborn child. Kelley said on average, there are 75-80 infant deaths at Huntsville Hospital alone – 55 of those being stillborn babies.

The most difficult and painful scenario Kelley or Chad have endured, they said their loss has taught them how to be strong for each other and strong for others. “We’re strong because we have to be, and what helped us more than anything is having Miller,” Kelley said. “Our family is really great, and the support was incredible. For the first three or four weeks, someone was there at 5:30 in the morning to help me with Miller; I was hardly alone those first couple of months. I didn’t want to be by myself, and they were a huge help to us during that time.”

Chad and Kelley said they decided early that they were determined to become stronger as a family through their loss.

Kelley told Chad they had to find the strength to make it through together. “I told him ‘I can’t lose y’all. A lot of people are torn apart, and I can’t do that,’” she said.

“We have to make sure we stick together and are made stronger through this.”

A family tradition for the Whitworths, starting with Chad’s grandfather, each grandson receives a shotgun – so Chad bought the Ducks Unlimited Gun of the Year for both of his boys. After Wells passed, Chad said he considered selling the 2018 gun but decided to keep it to remember his son. “It turned out that when we decided to hold the pheasant shoot, Chad was able to use Wells’ gun.

That was a really emotional but very special thing,” Kelley said. “We hope when Miller gets older, he will be able to shoot his brother’s gun.”

One thing Kelley said this experience has taught her is that there’s no such thing as too much support during tragedy. “If I found out someone was grieving a loss, I always thought ‘Oh, well, I’ll let them have their space’ but now it’s totally different,” Kelley said. “I think it takes going through something like this to realize how important that support can be for people.”

Kelley and Chad have plenty to look forward to in the wake of their personal tragedy. Not only is the money raised by their foundation helping others daily, they have another son on the way – and they look forward to telling Sawyer Tuck about his older brother who is in Heaven and how his life and death have positively affected so many people.

Now that I’ve been on the Board of Education a couple of months, I’d like to offer a few thoughts and formally introduce myself to those I haven’t met yet.

People often ask why I was interested in taking on such a role. Like many of you who have moved here, we intentionally chose Madison because of the strength of its school system. We came from a city with an extremely vibrant and high-performing public school system, and we have been pleased to see that continue here.

But as outstanding as the Madison City Schools system is, it faces significant challenges over the next few years as it deals with growth and per-student funding and tries to identify revenue sources to address these concerns.

I believe strongly in serving and giving back to one’s community, and serving on the Board of Education appealed to me given my vested interest of having two children in the school system. I want to see our school system continue to thrive

and excel in providing the highest quality education and extracurricular activities for all our city’s children.

My father was a school superintendent.

That role revealed to me the importance of having a Board united in a common goal of working to put its schools, administrators, teachers, staff and students in the best position to meet their needs and achieve their goals. I believe our school system is at that performance level, and I want to give of my time and efforts to help ensure that such success continues.

I realize I am joining the Board at a pivotal time in our school system’s history. Madison is experiencing unprecedented growth as new businesses and industry bring families who want their children to be part of such a vibrant and flourishing school system.

While such growth is exciting, that enthusiasm is tempered by the strain it

inflicts on our schools in their current state.

To meet the needs of both our current and future students, we must build new facilities to adequately house and serve our student population with the resources needed to maintain our system’s high level of performance.

Superintendent Robby Parker presented a plan to build both a new elementary school and new middle school, make needed additions to both high schools, create a district-wide Pre-K Center, provide additional operational support like SROs, counselors and teachers, make safety enhancements and address many deferred maintenance projects.

The residents of Madison have been, and will continue to be, the key to our school district’s success. Together, we will do whatever is necessary to ensure our schools are among the best in the state and nation.

Parkinson’s for a purpose

Mike Winkler, minister of the Madison Church of Christ, intentionally parks as far away as he can from Huntsville Hospital.

There to visit the sick, he uses the two skywalks to enter the main building. As he leaves, he checks his phone to see his step count. It reads a little over 3,000 – 7,000 more to go before day’s end.

Winkler aims for five miles a day. Walking, along with taking medication and reducing stress, is what his doctor recommended to ease his journey with Parkinson’s disease.

The doctor’s instructions were to walk 10,000 steps a day. “I try to get as close to that number as I can six days a week,” Winkler said. “The exercise is important because it helps me maintain my flexibility and balance, strengthens my core and reduces stress.”

Winkler underwent a colonoscopy in July 2017 and was prescribed a larger prep than normal because of previous issues with the test. After the test was completed, he started experiencing tremors in his upper lip and right hand. “Our first thought was that the prep contained gluten. I am gluten intolerant, so that must be the cause of the tremors,” Winkler said.

With the question of the tremors answered in their mind, Winkler and his wife, Pam, took a trip to Montana to visit family. While there, he contracted a cold, and his voice became weak. After several weeks of not being able to get strength back in his voice, Winkler decided to visit his family physician to ask for an appointment with an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor. “She did some simple tests in her office and suggested I might need to see a neurologist instead,” Winkler said.

A few weeks later at 62 years old, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s.

“The first thoughts were shock and disbelief.

I was concerned about the long-term effects of the disease,” Winkler said. “However, after the neurologist gave me the diagnosis, he proceeded to reassure me I could have a long and productive life if I would be a cooperative patient and follow his directions.”

Winkler began doing research on the disease, as he had little knowledge of it prior to his diagnosis. With his brother and son-inlaw being surgeons, he sought their advice for questions to ask his doctor. By his next visit, he had five pages of questions. “He answered every one of them,” Winkler said. “My doctor has been a great encourager.”

With his questions answered, Winkler said he knew it was time to tell his congregation of more than 1,000 about his diagnosis. He met with his elders first and then made the announcement at a Sunday service. “The elders and members were extremely supportive when given the news of my Parkinson’s diagnosis,” Winkler said. “The prayers that have been offered to God on my behalf from the Madison Church of Christ family have been and are so encouraging and uplifting. It makes my Parkinson’s journey so much easier to bear.”

Winkler said the Parkinson’s diagnosis has also helped him be more empathetic with others who are dealing with various challenges. “I think you need to walk in someone’s shoes sometimes to really understand what they are dealing with,” Winkler said. “My diagnosis has also helped me realize the impact that prayer and encouragement can have on others as they are dealing with difficulties.”

Winkler marks verses in his Bible with different colored highlighters, a certain color marking passages of encouragement – passages like Romans 8:28: “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love him.” “Parkinson’s is not fun, but in a way a lot of good has come from it,” Winkler said. “Knowing unequivocally that God is in control and that he willingly bears all of our burdens makes this Parkinson’s journey bearable and purposeful.”

Winkler knows the disease does not define him – something his doctor continues to instill in him. He said he loves his work in the ministry more than ever, finding a renewed sense of teaching and encouraging – with the daily determination to get in his steps, set his timer for his medication and remember that God is in control and carrying the load.

Winkler said he is willing to give advice to those walking in his shoes as Parkinson’s patients.

“Remember your life is not over just because you have Parkinson’s.

Diligently follow your doctor’s guidance and find someone to lean on when you get discouraged because you will get discouraged,” he said. “Most importantly, partner with God through prayer and reading the scriptures for comfort and encouragement. Remember that God can take the challenges of our lives and use them for good.”

Taught by certified R.A.D instructors, the Rape Aggression Defense System is a women-only course

Our police department encourages neighborhoods and HOAs to participate in the Neighborhood Watch program. The program encourages neighbors to get to know each other and to protect themselves from criminal activity. Teresa Duncan-Taylor

Teresa Duncan-Taylor is the community resource officer with the Madison Police Department and has lived in the community since 2012. She is married to Lawrence and the couple has three children and one granddaughter, Zoey. Duncan-Taylor is a graduate of the North Alabama Police Academy at Columbia Southern University where she studied criminal justice administration.

What is your job title, and what does your work entail?

I am the community resource officer with Madison Police Department. Currently I address quality of life issues involving residents and businesses within the city. I provide programs related to community education for senior citizens, maintain all social media platforms, serve as resource for our community policing efforts, including neighborhood watch programs and the Coffee with a Cop events. I am responsible for recruiting at the college level for patrol officers and also conduct personal safety workshops. In addition, I serve as the Police Department Defensive/Pursuit Driving Instructor and am a certified RAD (Rape, Aggression and Defense) instructor and program facilitator.

Prior to my current assignment, I served with the Street Crimes Unit for 6 years working narcotics, prostitution and human trafficking cases. This is my 18th year in law enforcement having worked as a K9 handler, District Attorney Investigator and patrol officer in Blount County since 2002.

I currently serve on the Board for Partnership for Drug Free Community where I speak on the opioid crisis and as secretary for the Madison County Chapter of the Southern States Police Benevolent Association.

What made you choose your job?

What about it is meaningful?

When police recruits are asked why they wanted to join the police force, the stock answer is, “To help people.” It took many years for me to understand that it’s firemen and nurses who universally help people. As a police officer, the general public rarely sees my actions as helpful. Arresting drug dealers and users, diffusing domestic violence situations, and writing traffic citations left me feeling as if my goal of “helping” was a fallacy promoted by police recruiters. While I would like to say I have helped people, it is more appropriate to say that I have impacted lives. Striving to be an example of professionalism, compassion and moral character without expectation of recognition or reward appears to have more 54 Madison Living

of an impact on the lives of those I encounter. Help can be defined as assistance, intervention, or prevention, and the value of that is not usually perceived until after a critical incident or event has long passed. The overdosing drug addict who is someone’s son, the abused child given a safe haven, the tire changed on a dark road; these are the lives we touch and may never know the impact of our actions. Performing tasks that we consider all in a days’ work may be something that, unknown to us, will change the direction of a life or the heart of someone in need.

When people ask me now why I became a police officer, my answer has changed. I want to make a difference. I want to impact lives and change social perceptions. I want to allay fears and reduce the unknowns of life, which cause struggles for those around me.

That is why I am a police officer.”

What is your favorite place to visit in Madison?

I enjoy being outdoors and have fallen in love with the greenways. They are clean, safe, and such a quiet, calm place in the midst of all that is Madison. I believe that, once the stadium is up and running, the baseball diamond could possibly be my second favorite.

What are your favorite Madison restaurants, and what do you like about each of them?

My husband and I enjoy Fulin’s as we find the service is impeccable, the food is always superb and the restaurant is spotless. We also enjoy Crickets, hands down, the best wings around!

Why do you love Madison?

I have lived all over the country and in Europe but have always looked for a place that felt like home. After moving here, I found the people to be hard working individuals who strive to promote the common good of the community. Knowing that the city recognizes the importance of education reassures me that we will continue to set the bar high as a place to raise the next generation of leaders.
