lves, reindeer and the jolly ole soul himself take command in Peter and Lisa Weiland’s home at Christmas.

The work starts in November when Lisa’s sister, Laurie Leonard, visits from Georgia. “We just love to decorate. My sister worked in a flower shop and took decorating as a hobby. It caught on with me,” Lisa said. They enjoy mixing and matching, arranging items and finding the little accent that adds the pizzazz, she said.

They focus decorations on common areas that most people will see and then expand as times permits. “One year, we even did the backyard and pool area,” Lisa said.

Outside, decorations are simple and staid, heightening the effect inside. “We’re not out to compete with Clark Griswold,” Lisa said.

like a lodge. “We decorate along the lines of what you would find in a cabin ... wooden, cloth or natural ornaments with a woodsy or outdoor theme.” Colorful and travel-keepsake ornaments perk the nature theme.

During the season, Lisa and friend Julie Carlyle host a Christmas Cookie Exchange. They take cookies to Downtown Rescue Mission, 305 8th Street adult residence, Morningside Assisted Living and Tut Fann State Veterans Home. They also host a Christmas party to collect toys for children at the rescue mission.

In 1996 the Weilands moved to Madison from Newport News, Virginia, with Peter’s assignment with NASA Langley Research Center. He retired from the THAAD Missile Program in 1999.

Hailing from Lumpkin, Georgia, Lisa works as a speech pathologist at West Madison Elementary School. Peter is chief technical officer at Radiance Technology. He grew up in the Midwest before attending West Point.

The Weilands play USTA tennis at Huntsville Tennis Center. Peter holds membership in numerous business/technical organizations and is a board member and Space Camp Committee chair of Air, Space and Missile Defense Association.

Several ornaments remind us of these times when we were just starting out our lives together over 30 years ago,” Lisa said.

Their sons’ ornaments take the longest time to place.

“We spend so much time appreciating them.”

Lisa’s avocation has launched an online store (southerngranddesigns.com and Facebook) featuring custom wreaths, unique seasonal accents and faux florals.

As a military family, they swapped Christmastime festivities between parents in South Carolina and Georgia. In recent years, the Weilands have stayed in Madison and have their families travel here. “The best time is when we can get the whole family together on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day,” Lisa said. “We usually have a big breakfast and make pancakes using Santa- and reindeer-shaped molds. It’s also the one time we make Ebelskivers, a Danish pancake.”

Their traditional Christmas dinner features roasted turkey, both sweet potato and squash casseroles and a unique tradition of homemade noodles. “We make noodles three days in advance, cook them in chicken broth and eat plain,” she said. “No one knows why, but it has been a family tradition as far back as anybody can remember, and Grandma is 85.”

In late evening, the whole family plays Dirty Santa (whether they want to or not). Most items are gag gifts.

Sallie’s Whistle Stop Sweet Shop will host sessions for making gingerbread houses during December.

T

he fudge, cookies and other delectables at Sallie’s Whistle Stop Sweet Shop undeniably are decadent and delicious.

Sallie Walker has nicknamed her shop, “The Sweetest Stop in Madison, Alabama.”

“It’s such a happy place to work and play,” she said.

Michelle Rallecca works at the 104 Main Street shop. Original owner Lynn Crumbley stops by when they need extra help.

“During the holidays, I was always the one to make gift baskets for friends with sweet, gooey, chocolatey yummy stuff,” Walker said. “Growing up, I watched and sometimes helped my mom, grandmother and aunt make goodie baskets for everyone in the family.” Walker also gained experience during college by managing a small cafe in San Francisco. “Lynn Crumbley taught me a lot when I took over the shop,” Walker said.

“We are ‘taste pushers’ – not hard sellers at the shop. We welcome all guests to taste our fresh fudge and gelato flavors. We do hand-make most products using the freshest ingredients and real sugar, sweet butter, finest chocolate and caramel,” she said.

Salted caramel fudge is very popular, along with Oreo bon-bons and dark chocolate sea-salted caramels. Walker’s favorite is walnut caramel clusters with milk or dark chocolate poured on top.

Standard choices for gelato are chocolate-covered espresso bean, Tahitian vanilla, dark fudge and cookies-and-cream. New flavors constantly revolve with tastes like pistachio, carrot cake, strawberry and raspberry sorbeto.

And the shop tempts shoppers with much more, like chocolate-dipped Oreos and other cookies, root beer floats, popcorn and a bulk candy station. Sallie creates custom gift baskets and favors for weddings and parties.

Guests enjoy the old-fashioned choo-choo train that rambles along a track suspended from the ceiling. “It’s fun to watch young and old enjoy. It’s even more fun to turn it on for folks who don’t know it’s up there,” she said.

During December, Walker will host a holiday workshop for making gingerbread cookies and a gingerbread house. Spaces are limited, so contact her for availability.

Her husband Michael is a contractor at NASA, which brought them to the Madison area. Along with California, Sallie has lived in Japan and Washington state. Her son Duane (D.J.) Wells, 29, of San Diego, runs a cattle ranch. Son Derek Wells, 20, works alongside his brother at the ranch.

Sallie’s Whistle Stop Sweet Shop is open Tuesday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday and Thursday, 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; and Friday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. “We’re experimenting with staying open later on Saturday. We’re open ‘by chance’ on Sunday and Monday,” Walker said.

CIRCUS ANIMAL BARK

OREO BON BONS

(Only four ingredients)

1 pound Oreos 8 oz. cream cheese 1 tsp. vanilla Melted chocolate bark

1 (12 oz.) bag of frosted circus animal cookies (pink and white) 7 oz. cream cheese, softened 18 oz. vanilla bark 4 Tbsp. dry sugar cookie mix Rainbow sprinkles

Line a large baking sheet with wax paper and set aside.

Melt 9 ounces of the bark in the microwave; stir in dry sugar cookie mix. Pour mixture onto the baking sheet and spread into a thin layer.

In a food processor, pulse animal cookies until finely crushed. Add cream cheese and continue pulsing until mixed thoroughly. Drop spoonfuls onto the hardened bark and spread out evenly.

Melt the remaining bark and stir in remaining sugar cookie mix. Pour over truffle filling and immediately add sprinkles.

Allow to fully harden; use a knife to break apart or cut into pieces. Enjoy!

Pulse Oreos in a food processor; add cream cheese and vanilla and pulse to desired consistency. Roll into balls and chill slightly.

Dip in chocolate, allow to harden and enjoy.

WALNUT CARAMEL CLUSTERS (Sallie’s favorite!)

Enough walnuts to cover small baking sheet 8-10 caramel candies (1 per cluster you want to make) Melted chocolate bark Spread walnuts over baking sheet in a single layer. Unwrap caramels and knead them by hand or warm slightly and then make a circle. Place the circle of caramel onto the walnuts and press down with your palm to make the caramel adhere to walnuts.

Warm chocolate (but not too hot). Using a large spoon, place one spoonful of chocolate onto caramel. Use bottom of spoon to spread to edge of the chocolate. After three or four, go back to the first one and add a little chocolate right in the center as needed (sometimes looks saggy); blend again with the spoon. Allow to harden.

ary Beth Broeren’s work as director of Planning and Economic Development for the City of Madison is comparable in scope to her last job as planning manager for Huntington Beach, California, population of about 200,000.

Some of Madison’s larger projects, like Town Madison, are equivalent to her work in Huntington Beach, and both cities have busy schedules, even with the population difference.

The job opening in Madison City Hall attracted Broeren for projects underway in differing stages of implementation and the opportunity to work with the city on other goals and efforts. “Madison benefits from its strong identity as a community that is grounded in family and tradition while at the same time welcomes development and appreciates positive change,” Broeren said. “That combination provides a powerful springboard for advancing the city’s objectives and makes for rewarding professional work.”

As city planner, Broeren handles day-to-day management of Madison’s land use regulations and increases the city’s economic development opportunities. She must produce current and longrange planning and project approvals; support municipal groups, like Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Adjustments and Historic Preservation Commission; and interact with city hall colleagues.

“The economic development component involves attracting new commercial and industrial development, retaining and expanding existing businesses and supporting Industrial Development Board,” Broeren said. Her department also manages capital improvement projects, such as downtown streetscape improvements and the proposed new library.

When attracting new businesses, Broeren and staff face significant confidentiality and discretion. “We might work on a project four to six months before the developer is comfortable with sharing anything with elected officials or the public,” she said.

“Establishing and maintaining that trust is critical for continued success in the development community.”

However, with social media literally at everyone’s fingertips on any subject, frustration results when the department “is not forthcoming about what we are working on.”

Broeren also hopes to simplify Madison website (www.madisonal.gov) for improved convenience to users.

“Underlying all (these) responsibilities is a constant feedback loop of assessing ways to improve customer service, identifying ways to engage the community in the planning process and serving the public interest,” Broeren said. “We have a dedicated, knowledgeable planning staff that truly cares about Madison. They are an invaluable asset, and the city is fortunate to have them.”

Time is her main challenge. “Our ‘to do’ list never seems to get shorter.” Her greatest fulfillments? “It’s a tie between seeing a project approved and built that I know will be good for Madison and making the connection with a resident or business that furthers their understanding of how planning works.”

Broeren said she believes Madison’s top two needs are expanding the commercial base for tax revenue and jobs, along with funding public infrastructure for roads and open space that supports all development and improves quality of life.

The Southern California Association of Governments commended her work as project manager for a mixed-use plan. Broeren has received awards from American Planning Association and California Department of Transportation.

She graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in economics from Siena College in Albany, New York. At Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Broeren earned a master’s degree in city planning.

Her husband Rob works on the Space Launch System for The Boeing Company. She grew up in upstate New York, as did Rob with some time in Oregon. Their 13-year-old son Rigel is an eighth-grader.

She participates in P.E.O. philanthropic organization, American Planning Association and American Institute of Certified Planners. She helps the “Mentor Jackets” program at Georgia Tech that pairs professionals and seniors and volunteers with CASA of Madison County.

Christmas Card Lane

adiya Smyrnova entered the Christmas Card Lane contest to share her art with the world.

“In Ukraine, I didn’t have (many) opportunities to express my passion for art; however, here, there are numerous ways I can share my love for art with others. I intend to grab every opportunity,” she said.

Smyrnova moved to Madison in 2012 “in hope for better education.” After graduating from Madison Academy, Smyrnova chose a double major of fine arts and business at Calhoun Community College.

Sponsored by Madison Art Council, Christmas Card Lane has three options for a card’s theme: traditional, religious or whimsical. “Even though I’ve entered my sketches to each section, the judges always chose my religious drawings,” Smyrnova said. In 2014 “My Christmas” won first place in People’s Choice voting; “Holy Night” won in 2015.

Her card for 2016 also will reflect a religious setting.

“I love driving through Christmas Card Lane displays. Not only does it prepare you for Christmas

mood, but it also makes you appreciate all the other talented artists,” Smyrnova said. “It’s truly one of my favorite things to do in winter.”

Smyrnova said a passion for art runs in her family.

“My mom, dad and grandparents are all great artists.

I simply didn’t have a choice in the matter. I was born with absolute obsession for art.” She can sculpt, draw and paint in any media. For her Christmas cards, she uses regular acrylic paints, paint markers and even Sharpies. “I’m not a patient person, so I don’t paint for long,” she said.

Her paintings for Christmas Card Lane have required the most time – about three weeks per card.

“Some paintings take longer. For example, when I paint murals, it takes twice as long because of the wall’s size and setting up the ladder and moving it,” Smyrnova said.

Smyrnova has won numerous art contests, including Cornell University Fashion Contest, River of Words, Google, Daughters of American Revolution and Crayola.

A graduate of Madison Academy, Smyrnova now attends Calhoun Community College.

“Christmas Card Lane was brought to life by MAC Past President Shrail Heinrich in 2014,” MAC President Tina Clark said. Clark and Sandy Sparks now are co-chairing the displays. “Each year, the event improves with new artists who create versions of beautiful scenes to represent their visions of the holiday season.”

Nadiya Smyrnova is no exception, Clark said. “Her vision has been a winning combination of artistic talent. As she says, ‘A vision of her home in Ukraine.’”

Smyrnova plans to transfer from Calhoun to the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 2017 and then to Cornell University in New York for a doctorate in art and business.

Christmas Card Lane is quite important to our small, tight-knit community, Clark said. This event not only unites residents but reaches out to people outside Madison. The display will open Dec 2. at 5:30 p.m. with the third annual Lantern Parade and lighting of Christmas trees downtown. Madison City Community Orchestra will perform.

After the opening, Teddy and Rikki Powell at 302 Church Street will host the first “Artist Meet and Greet,” a collaboration of MAC and Madison Station Historic Preservation Society. “The event has brought downtown Madison together like never before,” Clark said.

A

certified neonatal nurse practitioner, Renee Colquitt serves as lead coordinator of obstetrics services at Madison Hospital. She believes she’s exactly where she belongs.

In 2003 as a nursing student at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Colquitt started working as patient care aid at Huntsville Hospital. She later worked as a registered nurse in the surgical trauma intensive care unit.

“In 2006 I had a daughter born premature and needed care in the regional intensive care unit at Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children. She required respiratory support and help with feeding. It’s hard to explain … I just had a feeling, this is where I belong. Caring and nursing – everything I want to be a part of,” Colquitt said.

In 2006 Colquitt accepted a job as RN in RNICU. Wanting to understand all aspects of infant physiology and diseases, she earned a master’s degree as neonatal nurse practitioner. At that time, Madison Hospital was under construction, and Colquitt and her RNICU neonatologist cared for babies in Madison.

After meeting with Madison Hospital staff, Colquitt accepted the position of nursery coor-

dinator in March 2012. “Shari Crowe and I were the only ones on our floor about three months, preparing for opening Labor & Delivery in June,” Colquitt said.

Functioning as nurse practitioner, Colquitt has a collaborating physician who verifies her orders and plans of care, satisfying Alabama State Board of Nursing. She also can complete central line placement, lumbar puncture and endotracheal intubation.

While she does admit and prescribe drugs, Colquitt primarily has administrative duties in supervising unit nurses. “I’m involved in education, disciplinary needs, unit budget, staffing and quality improvement,” she said.

What does Colquitt call “a good day”? One in which their unit provides the best possible care to patients and families. Also, she realizes nurses need education and resources to give specialized care and a high standard of excellence to patients.

Colquitt always will remember one RNICU patient, born at 32 weeks gestation with gastroschesis (intestines outside of abdomen). Born in Decatur, the infant was transported to Huntsville for surgical repair.

As admitting nurse, Colquitt intubated the infant for surgery. “I remember her looking in my eyes with a sense of need; she was in pain and looked to me for help. I will never forget that plea.”

After three months in RNICU, the infant passed away. “I created a bond with her and her family. I was caring for her when she took her last breath,” Colquitt said. “It’s terrible when babies never get to experience the life that was planned, but God has a reason for everything. He placed her in my life to remind me and solidify why I do what I do.

I’ll never forget that.”

In 2016 by mid-October, 644 infants had been born at Madison Hospital. In September 2015, Madison Hospital started a Level II Nursery, a goal for Colquitt. Previously, a premature infant or one having minor respiratory distress was separated from his or her mother to go to RNICU. “Having been separated from my daughter at delivery, I know how hard that can be. Now, they can stay together. All it required was additional training for our nursery staff by myself and our neonatologist, along with some equipment. The hospital foundation was gracious enough to help purchase needed equipment,” Colquitt said.

Colquitt devotes time to several hospital committees. She helps coordinate Women’s Health and Perinatal conferences. In a fun venture, she and four other employees entered a lip sync battle and won $10,000 for Madison Hospital.

However, her favorite volunteering is with the Lifesaver Club, a component of “the foundation.

Employees donate monthly for equipment and education. As a steering committee member, I vote on spending and help with membership drives and the Lifesaver Club appreciation party,” she said.

Her husband Josh works as an Alabama State Trooper for Alabama Law Enforcement Agency in Marshall County. Their 10-year-old daughter Sydnee is active in 4H, so “we spend time raising chickens and hope to add pigs to our little farm,” she said.

riginally only men, “The Mugs” coffee group has evolved into weekly fellowship open to anyone who enjoys lively conversation – and lots of coffee.

In November 2006, five men first met when Sunday School teacher Gene Strickland retired at Trinity Baptist Church and suggested meeting for breakfast at Chick-fil-A on Wednesdays. “No women allowed,” Mugs charter member Roma Wing said. “They needed around-the-water-cooler talk (not locker room).”

More men joined and met through Christmas 2007. However, John Wing, Roma’s husband, told the group he couldn’t attend any longer. He wouldn’t allow Roma to use their van’s chair lift. John was dealing with horrendous pain and other problems from Post Polio Syndrome. John’s problems resulted from overcompensation of unaffected body parts doing work of afflicted parts, Roma said. John’s shoulders were depleted from overuse; he could no longer compensate for total paralysis in the legs.

However, the men refused to let John drop out. In January 2008, the men arrived at the Wings’ home with coffee and breakfast, ready to meet.

The next week Virginia Stone arrived to keep company with Roma. Another wife arrived the next week. The group morphed into a mixed gathering.

Men gathered in the kitchen, while the women occupied the living room, “sitting in a circle for easy chatter,” Roma said.

Members brought their own coffee mugs. “This ‘fluid’ group is always traveling and brought mugs from Germany, Scotland, Dominican Republic, Alaska, national parks, colleges and even to ‘Hell and Back,’”

Roma said. Some mugs boasted jokes like “Praise the Lard” and “Genuine Antique Person.”

“For want of a name, I christened us ‘The Mugs,’” Roma said.

No agenda, no officers. Each person makes it work. Men discuss computer problems, history, childhood memories, music and cars. “We gals never need a reason to talk,” Roma said.

Mostly readers, Mugs members discuss and swap books. They knit, do needlepoint and quilt.

They discuss America’s future.

Women rotate cooking favorite meals like cheesy grits, monkey bread, sausage casseroles, fruit and hash browns – and plenty of coffee. On Mondays, Roma emails a wacky cartoon and silly poem as notice to the cooks and setup people. “I love having everyone here and sharing my silly second-grade level poetry.”

Roma said their house is a “gift” that accommodates everyone needing easy accessibility after breaking a limb or surgery. Strictly a fellowship group, Mugs doesn’t have Bible study. All have some connection with Trinity, but Methodist and Catholic couples also attend.

Their record attendance has been 21 people.

“All have been married 50 years (except for two twice-widowed, and the sum of years equals 50).

was, ‘I didn’t know before how much I needed the Mugs.’ It was such a fitting farewell,” Roma said.

“Continuation of this group is such a wonderful tribute to John and Lynn Taylor who were there at the beginning 10 years ago – two amazing Christian men held in our memories each week.”

Charter Mugs members are Bill and Virginia Stone, Gene and Amanda Strickland, Helen Taylor, Dan and Dannie Walther and Roma Wing.

Other members are Chris and Charlene Christensen, Jean Mabury, Mike Killian, Walter and Janice Kantmann, Shirley Webb, Ernie and Georgette Legere and Woody and Thelma Westmore.

Honorary members are Yvonne Espy and Rebecca Boggs.

I’m the matriarch at 85 years old,” Roma said.

Two young, honorary members sometimes visit.

Couples have lived in Saudi Arabia, the Caribbean and Hawaii, with careers from aerospace engineering to working in “Bear” Bryant’s office.

Several members volunteer on missions, so Mugs collects clothing for students in the Dominican Republic and underwear for imprisoned women in Central America. They gather plastic bags for making mats for the homeless.

ISS: SCIENCE ON ORBIT The U.S. Space & Rocket Center’s “ISS: Science on Orbit” exhibit provides visitors with a true sense of what it’s like to live and work in space. This NASA grant-funded exhibit begins with a model of NASA’s Payload Operations Integration Center, where scientists and engineers on Earth manage the complex, international science experiments astronauts conduct on the International Space Station. Two mockups of ISS modules contain 20 full-scale replica racks that illustrate the Environmental Control and Life Support Systems, the food astronauts consume and a sleeping berth, among other necessary aspects of life and work aboard the station. A connecting node contains a full-scale replica of the Cupola Observation Module, which provides ISS astronauts their view of space and the Earth below.
