Art, music expansion in Madison schools strike winning chord

L

John Peck

Madison City Schools Public Relations Manager

28 Madison Living

“Logic gets you from Point A to Point B. Imagination will take you everywhere.” That witticism by Albert Einstein is a shining reminder of the important role that art and music education can play in student development. Madison City Schools recently expanded fine arts instruction in its elementary schools, thanks to additional funding by the Board. This comes in tandem with additional STEM teachers hired through Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) grants. The District already offered weekly Spanish instruction in elementary schools. These positions are enriching the learn-

ing experience of younger learners while strengthening their thinking, creative and problem-solving skills. Elementary and music teacher ranks grew from four art and four music teachers rotating among Madison’s seven elementary schools, to having an art and music teacher now at every elementary school. Elementary STEM teachers increased from two to now eight. BJ’s Wholesale struck a positive chord in MCS schools on the opening of its new Madison store with a $15,000 gift for music and art supplies. Madison City Schools Superintendent Dr. Ed Nichols said students who get ample fine

arts instruction score better on standardized testing. “You can’t underestimate the value of fine arts on learning,” he said. “Studies show students perform better, and it helps improve those pathways for creativity and for them to express themselves. And besides giving students more opportunities to tap into their creative side and shape their skills, these added teachers free up the classroom teachers to have more planning and collaborative time.” Kristina Stundtner is the elementary music teacher for Heritage Elementary. On a recent visit to her 4th grade music class, she welcomed students to strums on a ukulele before circling them up for hands-on lessons on xylophones (wood keys), vibraphones (metal keys) and a glockenspiel/metallophone. Students were shown the proper holding of the mallets, and keeping a beat. Across town at Columbia Elementary, a random visit to art teacher Sage Murine’s class found her leading students through a lesson in Digital Notan. That’s a Japanese design concept focusing on the harmonious arrangement of light and dark in composition. Students had a hands-on art assignment to complete before moving on to the DN

lesson on their Ipads which tapped their creativity and computer skills. Like their art and music teacher counterparts, MCS elementary STEM teachers provide more focused instruction rotating among classes while the classroom teacher has opportunities for planning future lessons and/or collaborating with colleagues. The STEM teachers are often aided in this effort by library media specialists and others who help lead fun learning activities tied to STEM. During last month’s Computer Science Ed Week, the district’s Instructional Technology Specialist Rachel Gibbs helped organize a variety of learning activities to boost student computational thinking. Examples of STEM lessons: programming an online Frosty to escape a snowstorm, mastering the use of sensors with ozobot robots, and learning graphic design basics with a program called Canva to create their own holiday greeting cards. There was even a live chat opportunity with local “CS Heroes,” including the director of NASA’s Payload Operations Center, whose team interfaces with science activities on the International Space Station.

Clever ways to invite people to be in your wedding party These fun ideas can help couples invite loved ones to be in the wedding party with style

P

Plenty of love and effort goes into coordinating a dream wedding. Although the happy couple garners most of the spotlight on such momentous occasions, they’re not the only ones who will feature prominently in the wedding. The wedding party is made up of bridesmaids, groomsmen, a ring bearer, a flower girl, ushers, and other guests of honor, such as a couple’s parents. The wedding resource The Knot reports that old school etiquette once indicated there should be one groomsman and one corresponding bridesmaid for every 50 guests, although four bridesmaids and four groomsmen tends to be the average nowadays. Choosing who will be included in the wedding party requires forethought and should not be rushed. The rule of thumb is to ask roughly a year to eight months before the

40 Madison Living

wedding so those asked have time to prepare. When that time comes, these fun ideas can help couples invite loved ones to be in the wedding party with style. · Say it with a treat. Remember those heart-shaped candies that come out at Valentine’s Day that are printed with various sentiments, like “Be mine”? Replicate the idea by giving prospective wedding party members cookies iced to look like tuxedos and bridesmaid gowns with a phrase like “Will you?” · Give personalized drinkware. Whether it’s wine glasses or flasks, have drinkware engraved with the names of who is being asked so that everyone can toast when they say yes. In the event that someone declines, that person will still have a thoughtful momento.

· Make custom scratch-off cards. This is one gamble that is likely to pay off when you present loved ones and friends with scratch-off tickets that reveal the question, “Will you be my bridesmaid/groomsman?” · Put together swag bags. Take a page out of fashion shows or celebrity parties and package some luxury items into gift bags for those special people you want to stand by your side on your wedding day. High-end grooming products, jewelry, electronics accessories, and more can be great gifts for those who are likely to be in your wedding party. · Gift robes or T-shirts: Plan ahead for staged and coor-

dinated photos by purchasing matching robes or T-shirts for all the besties in the wedding party. Those who are up for having a good time will have no problem wearing the matching outfits when out for wedding-related events. · Fill balloons with confetti and messages. Ask friends and loved ones to pop ballons to reveal your request that they be in the wedding party. Engaged couples may have many close friends and loved ones they want to stand by their side during the wedding. There are plenty of fun ways to ask them to be part of the celebration.

HOW DID YOU MEET? Chance and I met at a bachelor and bachelorette party in 2020. Throughout the night we would occasionally make eye contact but neither of us had the nerve to speak to one another. The night went on and we went our separate ways. I didn’t think much more about that night until a few weeks later, I received a follow request from him on Instagram which led to him messaging me. We went on our first date three days later. HOW DID YOU FALL IN LOVE? Falling in love with Chance was so easy. While I don’t remember an exact moment that caused us to fall in love, it was more of the small moments that led us closer together to where we are today. He was a true southern gentleman who checked all the boxes I had prayed for. THE PROPOSAL? I threw the idea around of going to Noccalula Falls Park to see Christmas lights before Christmas arrived. We initially made plans to go with another couple, but it just so happens they ended up having to cancel at the last minute. I told Chance we would just wait and go another time, but he insisted we go ahead and continue with our plans. Throughout our relationship, we had

several conversations about getting engaged. He knew I was shy and disliked being the center of attention. When we arrived, I asked him which trail he wanted to take first. He decided to take us down the trail that had no one walking down it first. We had made it about halfway around the trail when to my surprise he dropped down on one knee and asked me to be his wife. FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT? My favorite wedding moment was our first look together. As I stood there and walked toward him to tap him on the shoulder to see me for the first time as his bride, a swarm of emotions flew over me. All the months of planning finally coming to life right before us. It was an intimate moment just Chance and I before we walked down the aisle to commit ourselves to each other.

Dig into these wedding cake options Couples today have many options when picking their wedding cakes. The following are some wedding cake tidbits to chew on

S

Something sweet comes near the end of a wedding reception and that is the joy the couple experiences knowing they have their entire lives ahead of them to enjoy together. However, there is another sweet treat that is shared near the conclusion of the wedding and it is typically served with tea and coffee: the wedding cake. Wedding cake traditions can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. Cakes represented good luck and fertility for the couples tying the knot. The first wedding cakes were rather bland and breadlike, representing purity and virginity. Some were quite like the fruitcake now enjoyed during the holiday season. Eventually wedding cakes transformed into the sweet confections that are known today. The modern wedding cake as most know it debuted at the 1882 wedding of Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany. His wedding cake was actually the first to be completely edible. Previously, some cakes featured wooden broomstick pillars covered in icing, but the Duke’s cake used a hardened type of icing, according to Edible Art Bakery and Dessert Café. Couples today have many options when picking their wedding cakes. The following are some wedding cake tidbits to chew on. · Couples can choose among various cake styles. Many opt for a classic style, which is typically a white or ivory tiered cake with simple, elegant decorations. Rustic cakes may be much less ornate, while modern cakes may be rectangular or square and feature clean lines and minimalist decoration. The cake should fit the overall theme and scope of the wedding as it is another complementary com-

ponent of the larger celebration. · Wedding cakes can be quite costly. Wedding Wire estimates the average wedding cake costs around $500. One way for couples to save on their cake is to have a faux cake on display, with one tier that is made from cake and can be cut. Guests will then be served slices of a sheet cake that is much less expensive. · Couples have many flavors to choose from. Vanilla is classic and quite popular because it appeals to a vast number of people. Lemon, chocolate, and carrot are some other popular cake flavors. · When it comes to frosting a cake, there are various outer coatings that will encapsulate the cake to make it both beautiful and durable. Buttercream, Swiss meringue, fondant, cream cheese, and ganache all can be used in various applications. Some bakers attest that Swiss meringue, due to the addition of egg whites, makes it a more stable option over traditional buttercreams, particularly during warm weather. Of course, couples can opt for a “naked cake,” which usually has a scant amount of frosting so that the cake underneath peeks through. · A groom’s cake used to be tradition, but largely fell out of favor, although it is still alive and well in the American South. The groom’s cake typically is less ornate than the wedding cake, and favors the groom’s choices in style, interests and flavors. Couples and their guests look forward to indulging in wedding cake near the end of the reception. The looks and flavors of a wedding cake can be as unique as the couple saying, “I do.”

Popular wedding hairstyles

M

Much goes into being photo-ready on your wedding day. After months of planning, the wedding day is the couple’s time to really shine, and many go to extraordinary lengths to look their best. Gowns and tuxes may garner their fair share of attention, but hairstyles also can help couples look their best. Couples can wear their hair how they see fit, but certain hairstyles have exhibited some serious staying power and can look timeless in photos and videos for years to come. · Classic low bun or chignon: This is one hairstyle that certainly has withstood the test of time. A bun can be as sleek as a bride desires, or tendrils can be pulled out to frame the face, and the bun can be anything from minimal to messy. Pulling hair back may be more comfortable on warm days and there’s no frizz to worry about if Mother Nature fails to cooperate. · Vintage curls: Brides whose dresses harken back to a bygone era may want to complement that style with a hairdo that also speaks to that moment in time. For example, the intricate pin curls of the 1920s likely will tie into a gown with an umpire waist. · Fancy ponytail: Like a bun, a ponytail can pull hair away from the face for comfort and style. It’s a bit less formal than a bun and can be styled in many different fashions, even incorporating braids.

54 Madison Living

· Side-swept waves: Evoke movie-star drama with a hairstyle that features hair pulled to one side and cascading waves down the length of the face. · Loose waterfall braids: Carefree boho looks run the gamut of styles. One to consider is loosely plaited waterfall braids that add whimsy. Additional braided options also work well for less formal weddings. · Half-up, half-down: This hairstyle offers the best of both worlds. It enables the hair to be pulled back on top, and then the bottom is left loose, whether straight or in curls or waves. · Ballerina top knot: This is a take on the bun. But rather than pinned at the nape, it is high on the crown of the head. · Short bob or pixie with accents: Shorter hair also can look stunning. A bob or pixie cut can be enhanced with sparkling barrettes or woven-in flowers. · Halo braid: This braid is fashioned so that it goes over the top of the head and mimics the look of a crown or halo. It may negate the need for a tiara. Men also have plenty of options to get their hair wedding day-ready. Classic shorter cuts feature close-cut sides and more length on top, which can be spiked, tousled or even slicked back depending on personal preference. However, any length hair is in fashion, and grooms can don buns, ponytails, natural texture, and much more.

HOW DID YOU MEET? We met at a coffee shop during our sophomore year of college for a Bible study. We had mutual friends at the coffee shop and were introduced then. We quickly became friends and hung out in the same group. We often spent our days at coffee shop small groups, Friday nights at the Guntersville Lake, and hanging out at friends’ houses. Looking back, those early days were such a sweet time and hold some of my favorite memories!

FINE JEWELRY

HOW DID YOU FALL IN LOVE? We were friends for almost three years before we started dating. We both attended the University of Alabama. Over those years, we saw each other’s character and qualities and enjoyed each other’s company. Nolan recalls initially liking me only a few months into meeting each other, and I admit to liking him as well. We both secretly liked each other at different times but never told each other and instead remained close friends. By senior year of college, we had become best friends and decided to co-lead a Bible study together. We realized what a good team we were together and started saying “A-Team, Best Team”. Our college friends often told us we should date, and we always said we were “just friends”. I remember during senior year of college I started hoping our friendship would grow into something more and little did I know Nolan felt the same way too.

The following summer, Nolan asked me on a date, and I said yes. On our date, we talked about the idea of getting married and said we sounded crazy to say that so early on, so we agreed we wouldn’t tell anyone we talked about getting married unless it actually happened. Looking back, we weren’t crazy. We just knew. Nolan says he progressively realized how he never wanted to do life with anyone else except me. I remember telling a friend that whoever Nolan married one day would be a blessed woman, and I am so grateful to be that woman. We both genuinely like and love each other. THE PROPOSAL? We got engaged in New York on September 25, 2022. I was finishing my up 4th and final year of optometry school and Nolan was 2.5 years into working in higher education and also youth pastoring for a local church in Sardis, AL. Through Nolan’s secret planning, along with help from his best friend Bryan and my mom, he pulled off the dreamiest surprise proposal. He proposed in Brooklyn Bridge Park beside Jane’s Carousel overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge. It was such a special day! Afterwards, we celebrated with a nice dinner at DeStefano’s Steakhouse. We strolled around New York for the next couple of days drinking coffee and playing card games in Bryant Park. It was so fun spending a couple days in New York with only our closest family and friends knowing be-

fore telling everyone else. It was so exciting to come back to Alabama and celebrate with friends afterwards! FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT? Nolan’s favorite wedding moment: standing at the end of the aisle watching all of our friends and family come down the aisle two at a time and watching how our lives were now becoming one. Ultimately, getting to see Brooke take the steps down the aisle to become my wife! Brooke’s favorite wedding moment: after we said I do, we spent time in the groom’s suite just us two taking it all in while our reception was being set up. It was such a sweet, intimate moment getting to spend some alone time together, just us two, on our wedding day enjoying our first hour of being husband and wife. But I also loved our first dance and dancing with all our friends on the dance floor!

Writing the perfect wedding vows

When drafting vows, here are some guidelines to follow

T

The exchange of wedding vows is a key component of a wedding ceremony and sometimes helps to ensure the marriage is binding in accordance with the faith of the participants. Vows also may be exchanged in service of tradition. According to the wedding resource Zola, vows are not a legal necessity for marriage and some cultures do not use them. Still, many couples like to recite vows during their weddings. Couples have various options pertaining to the vows they share. In religious ceremonies, vows may be predetermined as part of the requirements and rituals of that faith and religious texts. Individuals also may choose to read romantic verses from poetry. Another option is to write one’s own vows. When drafting vows, here are some guidelines to follow. · Utilize a template. Scour the internet for resources on writing vows. You’ll likely find sample vows or even templates where you can fill in information if you do not know where to begin. · Utilize memories of when you met. Your vows can include special anecdotes or stories of time spent in the early days when you first knew this was the person with whom you would spend your life. · Explain who this person is to you. Tell the audience what it is about this person that has you smitten. Is he or she your partner in crime? Confidante? Best friend? Or all of the above? · Share what you are pledging. Write out exactly what you are vowing to your special someone. Be definitive and draw from your personal experiences. For example, “I vow to support you each time you adopt another shelter dog.”

“I promise to not hog the covers.” “ I vow to warm your toes on cold evenings.” Make it personal, heartfelt and humorous.

Furnish Your Home for Less

· Say you’ll be there. At the heart of vows is a promise that you’ll be around no matter what life throws at you. This is a safe sentiment to include in your vows, and likely one your future spouse and other guests will come to expect. · Keep things brief. There is no need to write a novel for your vows, which may reassure you if you’re nervous about the right wording and speaking in front of an audience. Outline the most important points you want to share and build on those sentiments. · Reflect on the future. Wrap up your vows by noting your excitement about what the future may bring, whether that is a family, travel or another adventure. Wedding vows are traditional components of many weddings. Couples easily can write their own vows to personalize the ceremony even further.

The Something Blue Shoppe

F

For nearly 55 years, the Something Blue Shoppe in Hartselle has enticed brides to be with the variety of beautiful wedding gowns in their window display. The Something Blue Shoppe is one of the Southeast’s oldest and most prestigious full service bridal salons, offering wedding dresses for every bride, from wedding gowns to beautiful plus size bridal gowns. A quality product at a fair price and respect to the client is something owner Sarah Morris set as a goal when she purchased the bridal boutique over 30 years ago. “Have you ever just known you would be good at something, that you could really be good at a job? That’s the way I felt when I walked into The Something Blue Shoppe, and when I learned it was for sale, I knew immediately that I wanted to buy the 20-year old business,” Morris said. “That was over 30 years ago, and I’ve enjoyed every minute that I’ve owned the store.” Besides bridal gowns, the store offers bridal accessories, mother and guest of the wedding dresses, flower girl dresses and bridesmaid dresses. Once brides schedule an appointment, they are assigned a bridal consultant to ensure that the most is made out of the bride’s consultation. “The consultant will reach out to the bride to introduce themselves and to see what styles the bride is interested in so they can be fully prepared before the appointment,” Morris said. “We want to ensure every customer who walks through our doors is given the best service that we have to offer.” Something Blue Shoppe also offers Royal Blue appointments for cost. These private appointments allow the bride and her guests to have the entire bridal shop to themselves. Morris, a mother to three daughters, knows the importance of giving bride’s a quality product by designers such as Justin Alexander and Essense of Australia at a fair price and treating them with care during a momentous time in life. “I want every bride who walks in our door to be treated as I would want my daughters treated,” Morris said. “The relationships made with our customers, their families, our amazing staff and the wonderful designers I have the privilege of knowing has been a true blessing.” These relationships are built on customer service as a well as a welcoming and comfortable environment. The Something Blue Shoppe is housed in the Farmers and Merchants Bank building that was built in 1915. Morris describes the shop as quaint, warm, friendly and beautiful. “You immediately know when you walk in the front door and see the baby grand piano and the comfortable seating that you’re going to have the dream experience of your life,”

Morris said. Customers feel the same way as Morris. Mothers and grandmothers often bring in their daughters and granddaughters to the Shoppe to experience the exhilaration of carrying on the tradition and becoming a Royal Blue Bride. “Style changes, fabrics change and wedding ideas change, but brides still have a common goal. That is to find the perfect gown to wear when they marry the love of their life,” Morris said. “I want brides to know they can trust us to protect and cherish that dream and all it entails, just as much as she does and her mother did before her.” Check out Something Blue Shoppe’s website at www. thesomethingblueshoppe.com. They are open Monday, through Wednesday and Friday: 10 a.m. -4 p.m.; Thursday: Noon – 7 p.m., and Saturday: 9 a.m. -2 p.m. You can call them at 256-773-4956. During World War II the British government used the phrase “while there is tea, there is hope” to encourage the British citizens to be strong in the face of war. Although Madison is not in the throes of war, there is always room for hope. And now the city has its first tea room. Madison resident Tammy Hall created Lanier House Tea Room & Private Venue, which opened a little over a year ago at 20 Martin Street in historic downtown Madison. Along with her husband, they also own the very popular Main Street Cafe, also in downtown Madison. Hall began to visit tea rooms while on her travels, including Italy where she took mental note of the things she liked. Those mental notes turned into actual plans in October 2022 when the Lanier House opened. “I fell in love with the concept. I had never seen anything like that,” Hall said. “I knew about China, but I had never seen it be used in a restaurant setting that way.” Hall feels the Lanier House, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1994, is the perfect place for her vision of a tearoom. “The fireplace makes it perfect,” Hall said. “The little private dining room was important because I knew I want-

It is that moment when the bride lights up. Her eyes gleam with tears as she stares into the showroom mirror admiring the fit of the perfect dress. “(Seeing that) It never fades,” owner of Madison Town and Country Bridal, Melinda Lyles said. This credo, this passion is what has led the iconic bridal shop on Hughes Road in Madison to celebrating over 36 years in business. Customer service is what keeps clients returning to Town and Country and that is something that Lyles does not take for granted. She calls the business a service shop. All gowns are steamed complimentary at all service points and alterations are free of charge at a certain price point. They also offer custom gown design made to measure “We are a small shop that is all about service,” Lyles said. “We do not want to just ‘sell you a dress’. It is important for us to make our brides feel at ease and make their experience one to remember. We help our brides through all stages of the wedding planning & send them off with confidence for their big day.” Lyles describes Town and Country Bridal as a southern, traditional and classic shop. Like all things that last for years, Town and Country has adapted to industry changes. Lyles says Pinterest has educated brides, making them more knowledgeable about what they want when they enter the store. Of course, styles have changed as well. They are the exclusive retailer for St. Patrick, Madi Lane & Love and Liberty Bridal. They also offer motherof-bride-or-groom attire, and tuxedo rentals. They offer in-house alterations of purchases. Madison Town and Country Bridal also offers complimentary steaming of gown and veil before final pick-up and free storage of gown. “Brides do not want to wear their mother’s dresses. Our goal is to always have something different to try on,” Lyles said. “As long as brides want to try on a dress, feel, touch and see veils, shops like this will exist.” Madison Town and Country Bridal is located at 211 Hughes Road in Madison. Huntsville Botanical Garden unveils second annual Wedding Expo Feb. 25 Whether you are starting your wedding planning journey, or you are tying up loose ends before the big day, Huntsville Botanical Garden (HBG) wants you to say “I do!” to attending the second annual Wedding Expo hosted at the Garden on Sunday, Feb. 25, from noon-4 p.m. Attendees will be able to discover everything essential for planning a wedding, all in one place, up close and in person. “We want to make wedding planning as easy as possible by offering a variety of vendors all in place at one time,” said Director of Marketing Laura McPhail. “The Expo will give guests an opportunity to chat with the area’s most talented wedding professionals as they taste delicious cakes, see beautiful flowers, find amazing decor, and discover solutions for all their planning needs.” Guests are encouraged to try samples, ask questions directly to vendors, and leave with a bag full of wedding planning swag. McPhail explained this kind of event can help take the burden off of the bride and groom for searching out reputa-

ble wedding professionals. It can also provide a fun bonding experience for those involved in planning a wedding. “Planning a wedding can be pretty stressful,” said McPhail. “The Expo is a perfect way to vet potential vendors for your big day, and it can be a lot of fun crossing things off your ‘to-do’ list with your one special someone or your entire entourage.” Advance tickets are $20 for HBG members and $25 for non-members and can be purchased at hsvbg.org/weddingexpo. The price increases to $25 for HBG members and $35 for non-members who wait to purchase at the door. Ticket includes admission to the Garden and a free Expo tote bag. Vendors interested in having a presence at the Wedding Expo can find more information and register at hsvbg.org/ wedding-expo. Vendor registration will be limited to a predetermined number of vendors for each category, ensuring adequate variety within the Expo. Old, new, borrowed, blue The rhyme “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” is likely familiar to people about to get married. This traditional rhyme has existed for centuries and refers to items a bride should wear and keep with her on her wedding day. The old alludes to a bride’s past, the new refers to her future, the borrowed is intended to be something borrowed from a married couple or bride, and the blue is a symbol of purity, love and fidelity. These items are traditionally given to the bride-to-be by family members or female friends who are already married.

577673-1

Carrying the bride over the threshold Historians trace this tradition, which Hollywood has undoubtedly helped to keep alive, all the way back to medieval Europe. Also inspired by a bride’s perceived vulnerability to evil spirits, the tradition of a groom carrying his bride over the threshold into their new home was believed to keep the spirits form entering the home through the soles of the bride’s feet.

Questions to ask wedding vendors

Couples can prepare a list of questions designed to ensure they know what they’re getting before they enter into a contract with a wedding vendor

T

The process of planning a wedding involves the coordination of many different components, including people. It can be stressful and it can be exciting. Chances are the coupleto-be will be handling conversations with vendors they may have never worked with before. It may be tempting to simply sign on the dotted line when hiring wedding vendors and hope for the best. But the process can prove more fruitful when couples prepare for it by compiling a list of questions designed to ensure they know what they’re getting before they enter into a contract.

How long have you been in business? How long a company has been in business, and more importantly how much experience they have with weddings, can be a telling detail. Experience is not always indicative of ability, but vendors with long track records of success may prove easy to work with.

Is the date available? The most important question to ask is whether the vendor is available on the day you have chosen to get married. The house of worship or place where you will be exchanging vows should be set first, and then additional vendors can be interviewed to confirm their availability and the scope of their services.

Will you be on site to oversee things? From florists to private caterers to specialty performers, it is acceptable to ask vendors if they will be there the day of the wedding to manage things or if it will be a third party or another representative. Confirm all pertinent details, including who will be there on the day of the wedding, in advance.

70 Madison Living

Are you insured? Check if the vendor is insured. It can be a risky proposition to work with vendors who are not insured.

What is your payment schedule and cancellation policy? Understand how the vendor expects to be paid. Many businesses require a deposit up front to book the date. Some may want payment in full a week or so before the wedding day. Others may enable you to make monthly payments for a set period of time. Ask how the vendor handles cancellations, and whether any deposit or portion of the money already paid will be refunded.

Experience the Best Views in Huntsville

When is the last possible date for making changes? Know how long you have to make any changes to your plans, colors, music choices, or other details. Are there any additional fees? It’s important to determine if gratuity, travel, overtime charges, cleaning fees, or any other charges are included in the contract or if it leaves room for additional expenses. Is mine your only wedding that day? How do you handle conflicts? Figure out if the vendor handles just one wedding per day or if they have staff to cover multiple weddings at once. Do prices differ depending on day, month or year? Certain dates are busier than others. Find out if the vendor charges a premium for holidays or particular times of the year.

At Burritt, we have a multitude of spaces for you to choose from for your special day. Your guests can experience the most beautiful view in Huntsville at The View. Though couples can plan wedding ceremonies and receptions how they see fit, many weddings are steeped in tradition, some of which may be more subtle than others. One longstanding wedding tradition revolves around a bride’s attire. Historians differ regarding the origins of the bridal veil, but some trace this tradition all the way back to Ancient Greece. Others suggest bridal veils were first popularized within the Roman Empire by people who believed that the veil protected the bride from evil spirits as she walked down the aisle. Traditions surrounding bridal veils even differ within various faiths, so the veil may signify one thing at a Jewish wedding and something entirely different at a Christian ceremony. Veils also have long been seen by some as symbolic of purity. Despite their long-held position in wedding lore and tradition, veils are no longer seen as a must-have. Nor are brides who choose to wear a veil beholden to having it cover their face as they walk down the aisle. In fact, many modern brides now flip their veils over their head as they walk down the aisle en route to saying, “I do.” Regardless of how brides who opt for veils choose to wear them, there’s no denying the enduring popularity of this tradition.

Honeymoon planning As couples pore over the details of wedding planning, they may want to consider these tips to ensure their honeymoon is a trip to remember for a lifetime

C

Couples have much to look forward to when planning their weddings. In addition to the momentous occasion when they say “I do,” couples can look ahead with excitement as they anticipate spending time with family and friends in a fun setting. Though the wedding day is the focal point of couples’ planning efforts, the post-wedding honeymoon also merits ample consideration. A honeymoon is the first trip many couples take together after tying the knot, and many will never forget this special excursion. As couples pore over the details of wedding planning, they may want to consider these tips to ensure their honeymoon is a trip to remember for a lifetime.

· Identify your dream trip. There are no rules regarding honeymoons. Though couples’ budgets and professional obligations may factor into where they can go and how long their honeymoon can be, couples can discuss their dream trips and then determine if they can make those dreams come true on their honeymoon. Couples who have always aspired to backpack through Europe should consider that a possible honeymoon trip. If a food tour of Italy is on couples’ bucket list, then investigate how feasible that might be for your honeymoon. · Stay up on current events. It can be easy for couples to get lost in the weeds while planning their weddings and miss what’s going on across the globe. However, knowl-

Madison Living 73

edge of current events can be vital when planning a honeymoon. Faraway and exotic locales may seem tailor-made for a honeymoon, but that’s only the case if such destinations are not plagued by civil unrest, conflict, natural disasters, or other events that can affect how safe it is to visit such places. The U.S. Department of State maintains a free, easily accessible list of travel advisories at travel.state.gov. The Government of Canada maintains a similar list at travel.gc.ca. Couples are urged to visit these sites before booking their honeymoon, particularly if they hope to travel internationally. · Consider amenities and all-inclusive packages. Allinclusive packages can be a great deal, particularly for couples who want their honeymoon to be all about relaxing at a single resort destination. All-inclusive packages cover the cost of food and most beverages, making these options both convenient and budget-friendly. When going this route, couples also should decide which amenities they want to access on their trip. Access to a gym and/or spa, activities like parasailing, and other perks are just some of the potential amenities couples can look for as they choose a honeymoon destination. · Collaborate. A honeymoon may be the first trip couples take after tying the knot, and it can lay the foundation for future collaborative efforts. Planning travel is

GEORGIA CLARK

Overcoming “The Demons Within” of Imposter Syndrome STORY BY BOB LABBE PHOTOS BY JOSHUA BERRY

A

As an anchor and reporter for WAAY-TV, Channel 31, Georgia Clark arrived in the Rocket City just over a year ago after earning a bachelor’s degree in Political Science with minors in Communication and Multi-Media Journalism from Troy University where for two years she was an oncamera anchor and reporter for the Trojan Vision News, plus she was a print reporter for the school’s Tropolitan. “I had thoughts of entering politics or law while I was studying at Troy, but something didn’t feel right,” said Clark. “During the summer before my senior year, I had no idea nor plans of what I wanted to do. I worked at Publix and thought I could get into store management. I took one additional communication class where longtime Montgomery broadcaster, Stefanie Hicks East, took me under her wings and showed me I could work and be successful in TV

journalism.” Her news content delivery is smooth. She has a mature voice that has full resonance, superb eye contact with the camera, and the attractiveness that reflects her years of participating in beauty pageants culminating in 2018 when she was crowned Miss Teen International among contestants spanning the globe. She was chosen after competing in the interview, fitness-wear, fun fashion and evening gown categories of the pageant. She won the crown at age 18. Now, at age 23, Clark is blossoming into a solid member of the Channel 31 news team both as an anchor and reporter. She stands 5-foot-10 and has that natural beauty queen look, shines with confidence with a voice that’s mature, strong and full of richness. Born as an only child in Dothan, Al. on the same date, June 1, as Hollywood’s Marilyn

Madison Living 81

Monroe, Clark is well educated, a musician and athlete who has an orange belt in Taekwondo. Beneath all of her success and even brighter future, Clark carries the sometime stress of dealing with two diagnosed disorders: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Imposter Syndrome. “I was very young when diagnosed with ADHD as one of my first teachers noticed many times I was never really totally present in class as I would stare out my classroom window,” said Clark of her ADHD. “It showed in my grades as I was C-D student. Things just weren’t clicking. My parents spent hours working with me, but the teachers at the private school I was attending didn’t provide accommodations for me and my disorder.” In the third grade, Clark began attending public school and was nearly held back a grade because she could not read or write up to her class level. Teachers began to help and provided special classes to assist Clark in overcoming her attention deficit. “I was a weird little kid as I entertained myself being an only child and many of my first friends weren’t solid friends as I was a loner and a tomboy and I just didn’t fit in with most of my friends,” said Clark, “But my parents made the effort to make sure I played with others.” Soon after being diagnosed with ADHD she was put on medication, some of which made her hallucinate.

Doing more than expected.

The “Movers Who Care®” Difference.

During high school the medications were an on/off type of situation. In March of 2023, she stopped the medication all together. She added, “I haven’t had the urge to take the meds. They made me have high anxiety and it was affecting my work.” Clark has made it known to her employer and her coworkers of her conditions and many of them have been extremely helpful. Most people have no idea what Imposter Syndrome is or even heard of the disorder. “It’s difficult to explain. To me it doesn’t make sense and it’s sort of a contradiction in itself,” said Clark of her condition, which is defined as feeling anxious and not experiencing success internally, despite being highly productive and successful. Imposter Syndrome often results in people feeling like a fraud or phony, and doubting their abilities and their earning praise from their successes. For Clark, her graduating high school and college with high grade point averages and winning the Miss Teen International crown have been hard for her to accept. She continuously battles the demons within her. She constantly has to motivate herself. She added, “The moment you stop growth, you become stagnant. I’ve been scared, but I keep pushing on. I have asked myself, what do the folks at Channel 31 see in me. I keep a balance and I am very grateful to be where I am. I love my job.” The disorder is most prominent in females. Throughout her life Clark had constant cycles of regret. She grew up with her mind different than most as many times she felt inadequate. She said the ADHD has contributed to the Imposter Syndrome, as with her attention not being stable, her learning took longer to achieve the results. “I should be able to speak Japanese as I took two courses in the language, but wasn’t able to concentrate,” said Clark. “Only in the most recent generations has society allowed women to be equal, so having the syndrome was similar to what was going on with many women.” Clark drives a powder blue 1978 Thunderbird, which was her first car when she turned 15 at a cost of $5,500. With currently just over 79,000 miles on the car she named “Tina,” Clark can be seen around the North Alabama area driving in grand style. “I love older cars,” said Clark. “I love to write short stories as I had a middle school teacher who inspired that passion with me. I had an aunt who was an English teacher who gave me help, too.” Clark, who is single, lives in a small home that she shares with her pet dog, Luke, and cat, Cordelia. She has gained many friends since arriving in the Rocket City, a city she never visited until taking the job at Channel 31. Her being accepted in television has been like other good things to occur in her life was, as she said, “A fluke.”Clark had thoughts of joining the military or the FBI and even had thoughts of possibly being in politics through a possible law degree, but something just wasn’t right in her 577262-1

Madison Living 83

thoughts of her future as Imposter Syndrome was causing a struggle. Instead, she ventured into broadcasting, which is a profession that requires confidence, conviction and faith. Her short experience in television broadcasting has changed her, encouraged her to be who she is. “My grandfather, a Baptist preacher, died when I was 14, but he gave me three words I carry with me in my diary. Those words are fire, bold, beauty,” said Clark. She said her father recently came to visit her and helped her clean her home and reorganize her belongings as everything now has a place in her two bedroom home. “He gave me what we call a reset. He did the same thing to me while I was in college. My mother also has ADHD and she has given me hope the last few years. I feel my life is more organized.” “In my work, my reporting is better as I stay on track. I get in and get out as soon as I can in getting the story,” added Clark. “I’ve learned I don’t have the time to get off track.” Growing up with her outstanding physical looks Clark has had to deal with enormous jealously from fellow females. They tried to break her down. It altered the way she viewed herself. “Not at Channel 31. We all want to see one another succeed,” she said. “I was a goofy kid, but my grandfather saw I could grow into something special,” said Clark. “I now believe I can, as I stay on track.”

First Safe Haven Baby Box in state opens at Madison Fire Station

M

Madison city officials cut the ribbon on the brand-new Safe Haven Baby Box on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at Madison Fire Station 1. The Alabama legislature passed a bill last summer laying the foundation for Safe Haven Baby Boxes to reach cities across the state, and Madison led the charge on the initiative with the first baby box in Alabama. “We are honored that the first Safe Haven Baby Box to be installed in the state of Alabama is happening right here in the city of Madison,” Lee Marshall, founder and CEO of Kids to Love that has partnered with Madison Fire and Rescue on the project said. “What this box behind me does is give another option for success in life,” Mayor Paul Finley said of the initia-

tive at the ribbon cutting. “The best thing we can do in our community is give options for improved quality of life.” Over one hundred Safe Haven Baby Boxes are located across the country as a safe and anonymous alternative for parents to surrender their babies. Madison’s baby box is the 192nd box nationwide. It works when a parent leaves their baby in a secure box at a local fire station. When the box is opened and the infant placed inside, a silent alarm is triggered, discreetly notifying first responders inside the building. First responders then perform a preliminary medical evaluation on the child and in the case of Madison’s box, will then take the child to Madison Hospital for further medical attention.

“The modern fire service focuses on helping citizens in the most important ways. Our community risk reduction efforts are designed to impact our citizens who are in the most need. Along with our partners, our members are now easily available to be part of the solution for mothers in crisis and for infants that need to be matched with a loving family,” explained Fire Chief David Bailey. “This is a great opportunity to expand our services to our citizens, and [we] can’t tell you how much we appreciate that.”

Madison’s box was made possible through the cooperation of the fire department and Kids to Love, which donated the funds for the box. The funds for the Madison box were generously donated to Kids to Love from the Pilot family in memory of their daughter, Nikki Pilot Carlisle, and by Bill Roark, co-founder of Torch Technologies. Nine other cities in Alabama are slated to have their own baby boxes in the near future including Prattville, Gadsden, Tuscaloosa, and Opelika.

1. Holtz Leather Candle Bar Date/Friend/Solo Event What better way to spend a cold winter day than on a date with your significant other or friend at Holtz Leather making your own candle. The best part about this (and why it is number 1 on the list this month) is that you can do it anytime. No appointment is necessary. Simply pop into the store and tell a staff member that you want to build a candle. They will guide you through the process of picking the size, prepping the wax and helping you pick your signature scent. They have test strips so you can sample and know exactly what your scent will smell like before committing. Their most popular scent tends to be Backwoods and they also have a Leather scent that perfectly mimics the store. For a date experience, collaborate with your partner to create your signature scent together and then take it home for a cozy evening at home with your candle to burn. 2. Honest Coffee - Friend Event Wintertime is a great time to invest in friendships.

With so much less going on, instead of just sitting at home, meet up with a friend for coffee and conversation. A personal coffee recommendation is the Bootlegger (latte with a house-made bourbon caramel sauce). For breakfast grab a muffin to accompany your coffee, or if you are stopping in for lunch, try the Chicken Basil Pesto Panini (all white meat chicken, basil pesto, Havarti cheese, spinach, and tomato pressed on naan bread, served with chips or fruit cup). 3. Sunday Brunch at Old Black Bear Date/Friend Event Perfect for either a girls’ day out or a double date with another friend couple. Brunch at Old Black Bear needs no introduction. Only served on Sundays, it is the highlight of a typically quiet street on this particular day. But starting right at 10 AM, cars start rolling in, and within 30 minutes or less, the restaurant has a wait. And for good reason. OBB offers so many delicious choices that you will want to make this a Sunday tradition. Try the chicken and waffles for a Southern treat (fried bone-

OUT&ABOUT

CHRISTMAS CAPERS - Chickens, and a large amount of Moon Pies, flew from the roof of the historic building for the fifth annual “Christmas Capers” last month. The large crowd braved the cold for a chance to catch one of the 20 rubber chickens and win a prize. As odd as it might sound, the local tradition pays homage to a real event that occurred during the great depression years to help area families -- except back then it was performed using real chickens. The event was hosted by the Madison Station Historic Preservation Society and the city of Madison. Area businesses donated thousands of dollars in prizes which people could win by catching one of the rubber chickens thrown from atop the former Hughes Drug Store by Doc Hughes’ grandsons, Larry and Walt Anderson. The event concluded with, what else, photos with Santa. Photos by Cristie Clark of Captured By Cristie LLC
