Second, there are several world-class attractions right here or within a short drive, including the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, Huntsville Botanical Gardens, Cook Museum of Natural Science, and the Huntsville Museum of Art.

This area also has an extraordinarily strong arts community. Visual arts exhibits are open throughout the year at the Huntsville Museum of Art and on showcase through many of the area’s festivals, like Panoply.
Speaking of festivals, the greater Huntsville area is packed with many of the best festivals celebrating everything from the arts to science to music. We also have a
huge selection of music concerts available. Whether it is a concert at the Von Braun Center or the new Orion Amphitheater featuring some of the most recognized names in the music industry, or a showcase of amazing local talent through one of the many concert series, you will be in awe of what our area offers music lovers.
Performing arts such as theater, opera, and ballet can be found in abundance. The Huntsville Ballet Company is one of Huntsville’s oldest arts organizations.

Huntsville is “Alabama’s Music Launchpad”
Huntsville has a unique, diverse, vibrant, awesome and inviting music ecosystem that significantly contributes to our economy, employs people throughout the region, and is a vital part of our culture that plays a leading role in the city’s long-term strategy for smart growth.
To that end, Huntsville set out to answer this central question: How could the City known for its stellar rocket propulsion propel itself to the forefront of the music universe? The goal – to create a more dynamic music environment, from education to creation, production and performance, in a way that strengthened Huntsville’s growing economy.
Mayor Tommy Battle’s Music Initiative turned up the volume on Huntsville’s music dreams, and gave way to a comprehensive music audit. The audit paved the way for the creation of the Huntsville Music Board, a governing body tasked with implementing and prioritizing the road map provided by the audit to nurture the City’s growing music industry. The board’s formation was followed by the hiring a full-time Music Officer, Matt Mandrella, in 2022 and the creation of the Huntsville Music Office.
“Huntsville’s music scene is experiencing an unprecedented surge
of energy and creativity, and it’s truly an exhilarating time to be a part of it,” Mandrella said. “From the vibrant local talent to the national recognition we’re garnering, the momentum is undeniable. I’m eagerly anticipating all the incredible events and projects that lie ahead in 2024 and beyond.”
A driving force behind the area’s music scene growth has been venues like the Von Braun Center and the new Orion Amphitheater. They have been anchors, spurring other musical growth throughout the city. There are now numerous opportunities for local and regional artists to showcase their talent throughout the year in the Rocket City. You will see many of the those featured in this edition of Explore.
Speaking of growth, the newest music festival to sweep the Southeast is coming to Huntsville this September. Representatives from C3 Presents are planning a two-day festival for John Hunt Park.
“C3’s success in establishing festivals like Austin City Limits Music Festival and the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival speaks for itself,” Mandrella said. “This event is going to take our music city aspirations to the next level and continue establishing Huntsville as a destination for live music fans.”

Von Braun Center kicks off year-long 50th anniversary celebration
By Maria Rakoczy
TThe Von Braun Center has been the venue for rock stars, pop stars, and everything in between in Huntsville for fifty years. Famous and legendary artists like Elvis, Dolly Parton, and Elton John have graced the stage.
The VBC is a massive complex today, but once upon a time, it was simply the dream of a few forward-thinking individuals in Huntsville. As Huntsville grew in the 1960s, active members of the local arts community, Elvira Glover, Dexter Nilsson, Martha Hamm, and Martha Rambo advocated for a dedicated performing arts facility to replace their use of high school auditoriums and gymnasiums. With the additional advocacy of Huntsville City Attorney Charles Younger and Councilman Joe Peters, the
project became a reality and at the suggestion of Younger, was funded by a liquor tax. In 1969, the Civic Center Advisory Board was formed to oversee the design and construction of the facility.
NASA engineer, Bob Stagg was an original member of the Civic Center Advisory Board and said, “There was a lot of pressure about fifteen years before we opened to have a facility that would accommodate arts and arena events and a concert hall and a theater. Everything was in high school auditoriums before that.”
He further said of the work the CCAB put in to bring the civic center to life, “Being on the board during the design [and]

construction was a lot of work. It was not come into a board meeting once a month. It was come down here and see what’s happening all the time during the design and construction, but it was very rewarding and I am certainly glad that I was a part of it.”
The work even included travelling the country to tour other venues for inspiration, like the concert hall in Fresno, California that inspired the design of the Mark C. Smith Concert Hall. The founding board chairman Gordon Dykes, a member of the Army Corps of Engineers with expertise in contracts and architectural work, led the board in the design, contracting, and construction of the civic center. He was supported by Stagg and five other board members including Tom Thrasher and Martha Simms.
The process was also a learning experience in some ways for the board.
“There were a myriad of things of we had to decide during the design and construction phase: all kind of equipment from tables and chairs and popcorn machines and scoreboards and basketball floors and hockey dashers and a Zamboni. And when they told us we had to buy a Zamboni, we all looked at each other and said, ‘What is a zamboni?’,” Stagg recounted.
The hard work of Stagg and his fellow board members came to fruition on March 14, 1975. The VBC was chris-

tened by the Huntsville Arts Council’s Beaux Arts Ball and the next day, March 15, by a performance of Galilei Galileo by the Huntsville Symphony Association in the concert hall.
The VBC started its operations with a bang. It welcomed Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, who performed five shows while Huntsville (the first place Presley had played that many consecutive shows outside of Las Vegas), Jimmy Buffet, the Jackson five, Loretta Lynn, and Dolly Parton all just within its first year.
In the years since 1975, the VBC has continued to welcome more headline-making acts, including Elton John, The Beach Boys, Jason Aldean, Rascal Flatts, Miranda Lambert, and most recently, country superstar Riley Green played a sold out show in Propst Arena in March.
The addition of Mars Music Hall in 2020 is bringing even more acts to the VBC for acoustic and more intimate performances in the smaller venue. The Mars Music Hall is not the only addition the VBC has seen throughout the last fifty years. In 1980, the VBC expanded its meeting and conference space with the construction of the East Hall. The VBC continued to expand with the addition of the North Hall in 1987 and ten years later, grew again with the opening of the South Hall in 1997.
The original components of the VBC, the arena and concert hall, both underwent extensive renovations in 2010 to

update the thirty-year old facilities. Renovations were made possible by generous donations from Bill Propst and Mark and Linda Smith. The updated and expanded arena was then named in honor of Propst and the concert hall was likewise renamed in honor of its benefactor, Mark C. Smith.
The VBC has been the heart of performing arts in Huntsville but as a multi-purpose venue has also been the home of hockey in North Alabama since 1995 when the Huntsville Channel Cats came to town. Propst Arena was also home to the University of Alabama in Huntsville men’s hockey team and since 2004, has been home ice for the Huntsville Havoc.
The VBC has truly fulfilled its role as a multi-purpose venue over the last fifty years and brought big names to the Rocket City. In doing so, the VBC has created a lot of unforgettable memories for Huntsvillians and solidified a central place for itself in the lives of North Alabamians.
The motto the center has chosen for its fiftieth year, “Your Place Through Time” reflects this reality, and Executive Director Steve Maples says, “The next fifty years or twenty-five, in my mind, it’s going to continue to do what it has over the first fifty. We’re going to grow again and again and again.”
Their fiftieth year will be marked with special festivities at concerts and hockey games, a 5k Fun Run, and open houses with backstage tours throughout the year.

MARS MUSIC HALL
TThe newest addition to the VBC is bringing quaint, acoustic musical performances in a hip setting to downtown Huntsville.
Mars Music Hall opened in January 2020 after a year and a half of construction. The Huntsville city council approved the project in June 2017 and the groundbreaking followed on August 15, 2018. Its grand opening was marked by an inaugural sold-out performance from North Alabama native and folk and southern rock artist Jason Isbell.
“This is an exciting time, not only for the Von Braun Center, but for the Tennessee Valley region,” said Von Braun Center Executive Director Steve Maples. “The City of Huntsville is developing at a rapid pace and is constantly attracting out-ofmarket visitors and enhancing the quality of life for local residents. Adding this size and type of music venue to the heart of the city is an important step in continuing that growth, and we could not have made this happen without the support of Mayor Tommy Battle and the City of Huntsville.”
The venue was meticulously designed with consultation from Live Nation and inspiration from other venues of similar scope. It features an open ground floor for standing room only that is overlooked by a wraparound balcony with high top tables and chairs as well as a bar pouring local brews. The hall has a capacity of more than 1,500 people, making it a more intimate setting than Propst Arena and the Mark C. Smith Concert hall and perfect for events such as comedy shows or acoustic performances from rising acts.
Mars Music Hall’s neighbor, Rhythm on Monroe, also brings a modern feel to the fifty-year old VBC. A full-service restaurant and rooftop bar serving cocktails and urban fare
with locally-sourced ingredients, Rhythm on Monroe opened shortly after Mars Music Hall as a convenient dining option for concert-goers. Not only is it a convenient place to grab a bite to eat before or after a show but with the city views from its rooftop bar, is a beautiful setting for any occasion, concert or not.
Learn more about this unique venue and its schedule of events at vonbrauncenter.com.
RHYTHM ON MONROE
- Rhythm on Monroe is a full-service restaurant and rooftop bar, located in the Von Braun Center at the corner of Clinton Avenue and Monroe Street in Downtown Huntsville. The facility includes a large and open dining room downstairs with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a covered patio adjacent to Clinton Avenue. Upstairs, guests can enjoy an uncovered rooftop bar with tables, lounge seating around firepits, and cantilever umbrellas. Whether someone is looking for dinner and drinks before a show or an evening cocktail overlooking Downtown Huntsville’s unique cityscape and Big Spring Park, Rhythm on Monroe satisfies all needs.

THE ORION AMPHITHEATER
TThe Orion Amphitheater is that new concert venue in Huntsville that has big names singing its praises all over the world. Though only in its third year of operation, Orion has already made a name for itself attracting superstar acts and gaining a reputation as a beautiful and hospitable venue.
The amphitheater finished its second year of operation with a total of 187,000 tickets between 32 concerts, hosting 83 community and cultural events, and ranking in the top 20 of both Pollstar’s Mid-Year Top 50 Worldwide Amphitheatre by Ticket Sales and by Gross Sales rankings. In its first two seasons, it has put Huntsville on the music map.
“The Orion made Huntsville a new destination for rich entertainment and the arts,” said Managing Director of The Orion Ryan Murphy. “We’ve brought national touring acts like Lana Del Ray, Snoop Dogg, Weezer, and Stevie Nicks, for soldout concerts at the 8,000-capacity venue. Through the various types of artists in combination with a one-of-a-kind hospitality experience on the grounds, we’ve been able to attract new visitors across a wide range of ages to Huntsville and helped bring a large influx in traffic to the city that it hadn’t seen before, contributing substantially to the local economy.”
The 8,000 seat venue stands out for its intentionally and thoughtfully designed spaces which were crafted by a team experienced with touring and performing at venues around the globe. The team took the lessons they learned from other venues

and applied them to make Orion a functional and aesthetically pleasing facility.
“The more you’re making those artists feel comfortable and they’re letting their guard down, reputationally, they’re talking about how incredible it is to be there,” Murphy explained. “We had an amazing team of people that have worked in the industry for
years and gone to a lot of terrible buildings helped design it. So, we really want to support the local community and the local businesses by highlighting those kinds of things as well as just making those artists feel great and that’s why a band like Weezer goes, ‘Ooh! We should spend a week there rehearsing.’”
The design feeds into the top-notch hospitality of Orion. The

artist dressing rooms were designed to differ from run-of-the-mill dressing rooms by featuring natural lighting and offering creature comforts. Orion even goes above and beyond to make artists feel
welcome with gift baskets full of favorite snacks and Huntsvillespecific goodies.
The Orion also extends a unique experience to concert-goers with its open air setup that showcases the mountains and skyline of Huntsville and with its specialty food and beverage options that feature local food trucks and over fifteen specialty bars serving exclusive drinks.
Murphy says the artists Orion attracts, events it hosts, and its hospitality all combine to create a unique experience that brings not just locals but out of towners to Huntsville. In fact, about half of the venue’s concert-goers are from outside the Huntsville area.
“By bringing national artists, unmatched hospitality experiences, and diverse cultural programming on the grounds, The Orion offers a unique, well-rounded entertainment experience that is unlike any other,” said Murphy. “We’ve been able to create a new destination within Alabama where travelers can expect not just a fun concert but also an immersive cultural experience that extends beyond the show – from the local programming to the unique art installations at The Dome to the best of North Alabama’s culinary delights through a selection of food trucks at Apollo Park on The Orion’s campus.”
The 2024 season is already set to at least rival if not outdo its previous seasons with a lineup that includes Lainey Wilson, comedian Matt Rife, Neil Young, Steve Miller Band, Styx and Foreigner, Kings of Leon, and more.

During the winter months, The Orion transformed into a winter wonderland with many fun activities, including ice skating. The Camp in the MidCity District has become a very popular spot for catching the local music scene. It has given the stage to local and emerging talent in a fun and quirky atmosphere with a coffee shop, bar, and restaurant on campus. You can learn more about it at www.explorethecamp.com.
Smaller stages bring big character to music scene
TThe Rocket City is emerging as a music city and three venues are shining the spotlight on local acts and emerging artists.
Lowe Mill has been home to a flourishing arts community in Huntsville since 2002 when Flying Monkey Arts started hosting performances on the second floor of the former mill. These occasional performances grew into a permanent community of local artists and artisans, and the performing arts presence only grew with the larger artistic community. Just five years after Flying Monkey Arts moved in, in 2007, the popular Concerts on the Dock began. Today, Concerts on the Dock are a regular and popular summer activity. They bring a variety of musicians from diverse genres to the old dock in front of the mill for evenings of family-friendly outdoor fun set to live music.
“To that end, we give our stages both to new voices and old favorites. We think this blend offers our audiences the entertainment they love. It provides a space for new artists and established artists to learn from each other and keeps us in line with our values of art education and community support,” said Media Coordinator for Lowe Mill, Sarah Citrin of the kind of musicians the mill attracts.
In 2012, the now nationally recognized and celebrated, Tangled String Studios joined the complex and became another venue to showcase musical talent in intimate, acoustic performances. Founder of Tangled String Studios Danny Davis blends
his NASA engineering background with his love of music to craft one-of-a-kind instruments and hosts live, acoustic performances in the studio’s Live Room, a setting that encourages appreciation for the craft of music.
Overall, Lowe Mill offers a one-of-a-kind experience for the performing arts. Citrin remarked, “We think this facility is the most unique in the world. The dynamic nature of what we do here gives so many varied opportunities to artists of all kinds. The ambiance of this place sets people out of time. In the context of a concert, it creates an unforgettable and intimate experience between the musician and their fans.”
In recent years, Lowe Mill has been joined by new venues like Stovehouse, The Camp at MidCity and Furniture Factory that are also bringing live music and local talent to light in Huntsville.
Like Lowe Mill, Stovehouse has repurposed a former industrial center. As the name suggests, Stovehouse has transformed a former stove factory, Martin Stamping and Stove Factory, into a multi-purpose complex. The circa-1929 factory underwent renovations in 2018, turning it into a hub of both business and culture.

Deeper inside Stovehouse, the Electric Belle hosts must-attend themed parties featuring live entertainment. They’ve also recently added a new event to their lineup called Amplified Open Mic Nights.
According to Marketing Manager for Stovehouse, Hannah Wilkins, “Amplified Open Mic nights invite artists of every genre to hit The Electric Belle stage and share their voices and talent. We like to say “Tune up. Plug in. Be Heard.” Each performance, whether it be a band, soloist, rapper, singer-songwriter, musician, or poet, is complete with a full lights, sound, and stage production.”
Stovehouse’s history, which is preserved in the structure of the building, makes it a truly unique performing arts venue in Huntsville. “The energy of the then and now still pulses throughout Stovehouse and can be seen and heard in the backdrop of industrial tanks and tumblers and heard in the echoes of the tunes and talents that can be found in almost every corner of campus,” Wilkins explained.
Across town, the Orion is not the only place to catch quality live-in music in the Midcity district. Just a stone’s throw away from the Orion, The Camp is giving the stage to local and emerging talent in a fun and quirky atmosphere with a coffee shop, bar, and restaurant on campus. Previous acts include American Idol contestant Brandon Elder, The Beasley Brothers, and local talent like Preston Watts, Them Damn Dogs, and Microwave Dave & The Nukes.
Furniture Factory Bar & Grill is another popular spot for catching the local talent. Located on Meridian Street in Huntsville and in the Village of Providence, Furniture Factory includes acts such as Big Daddy Kingfish, Brandon Elder and Buckshot Rebellion.
The music scene in Huntsville is on the rise and venues like Lowe Mill, Stovehouse, Furniture Factor and The Camp are giving the spotlight to the local music talent and bringing quality entertainment to North Alabama.
These are just a few great examples. There are many places throughout the greater Huntsville area where you can find amazing local and regional talent being showcased. In addition to these, places there are also several concert series that offer many opportunities throughout the spring and summer months for enjoying tremendous performers from various genres. For a complete list of locations and upcoming concerts, go to www.huntsville.org.

U.S SPACE & ROCKET CENTER
Huntsville is home to the largest space museum in the world: the U.S. Space & Rocket Center.
Not only is America’s space program on exhibit in Huntsville, it was forged in Huntsville. We’re known as the “Rocket City” because Huntsville, Alabama is where rockets were developed that put men on the moon. When you visit this attraction, you can’t help but feel the anticipation Dr. Wernher von Braun and his team must have felt as they prepared to put man on the moon. And now you can learn about NASA’s current plans (and Huntsville’s role in it) to travel to Mars with the world’s most powerful rocket – the Space Launch System (SLS).
The U.S. Space & Rocket Center (USSRC) is a Smithsonian Affiliate and the Official Visitor Center for NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. It has one of the largest collections of rockets and space memorabilia on display anywhere in the world.
In the Davidson Center, guests journey through America’s Space Race and NASA’s plan to put man on the moon and the International Space Station, and get a glimpse of the future in commercial space ventures and the latest technological innovations. Future astronauts explore the Martian surface at KidSpace, plus experience the power of the first test firing of the five F-1 Saturn V engines and the importance behind their testing at Marshall Space Flight Center in “The Force.”
The U.S. Space and Rocket Center also offers unique experiences. You can see if you have what it takes to get the crew safely to space and back home again in the Discovery Shuttle simulator. Journey into the world of an unbelievably realistic virtual reality experience in space, the ocean, or with dragons through the DIVR+. Soar through the sky with MaxFlight’s state-of-the-art fully interactive flight simulator. Also, the Rocket Center attracts international traveling exhibits.

Greater Huntsville area offers plenty of opportunities for sports enthusiasts
By Bob Labbe
The greater Huntsville area has been listed as one of the best places to live and leading locales to retire. No matter which way you arrive in North Alabama those who make their way to the Tennessee Valley quickly see how much sports is a huge part of everyday life.
From leisure style of recreational playtime to exceptional spectator sports, Madison County and surrounding areas have what it takes.
Athletic venues in the area begin right here in Madison at Toyota Field home of the Double-A team of the Los Angeles Angels the Rocket City Trash Pandas, one of the newest professional teams in the area. Utilizing the confines of the Von Braun Center Propst Arena as home ice, the Huntsville Havoc play as a member of the Southern Professional Hockey League and have become an area favorite. Soccer has a new representative in the area as the Huntsville City Football Club, which plays in the Major League Soccer Next Pro, the third tier of American soccer. The team plays its games at newly renovated Joe Davis Stadium.
Football is represented by the NCAA Div. I Alabama A&M Bulldogs who play their homes games on campus at Louis Crews Stadium.
The Madison area has become a playground mecca with numerous Greenways, fishing and hunting, hiking or the more individual recreational sports as both Madison and Huntsville have a combined 200 parks and playgrounds and that are family-friendly. In Madison, two multi-sports facilities serve the entire surrounding
communities. The outdoor facility at Palmer Park while Dublin Memorial Park is an outdoor and indoor facility, which includes two swimming pools, gymnasium, soccer fields and pickleball courts. These two locales provide something for everyone.
Other athletic venues in the area include the Huntsville IcePlex, Huntsville Tennis Center, John Hunt Park. Phillips Park in Monrovia and an array of golf courses including Hampton Cove, part of the Robert Trent Jones Trail, Sunset Landing, Colonial Golf Course and The Links on Redstone Arsenal. The Madison Golf Center is the lone golf driving range in the area and boast expert golf lessons from top-notch golf professionals.
The local golf courses provide challenging, yet enjoyable scenery and are ranked among the best in Alabama. Sunset Landing - Par 72, 6,803 yards; The Links at Redstone - Par 72, 7,339 yards, Par 71, 6,890 yards; Hampton Cove - Par 72, 6,649 yards, Par 72, 6,592 yards, Par 54, 3,007 yards; Colonial Golf Course - Par 72, 6,583 yards.
Just a short drive from Huntsville, Burningtree Country Club is located in nearby Decatur and features a championship golf course with five sets of tees, ranging from 4,690 to 7,081 yards.
Another golf-type related sport, which has a huge following in the immediate area, is disc golf. There are a dozen challenging, well-designed disc courses within Madison County, many of which designed by Madison resident Lavone Wolfe, World Disc Golf Hall of Fame member and one of the most prolific course designers in

the world.
Local disc golf courses include one each on Redstone Arsenal and the campus of UAH, six in Huntsville proper, one in nearby New Market, as well as, three in Madison including at Creekwood Park, Asbury Church and Sunshine Oaks Park. A nine-hole (putter) course are located on the grounds of Dublin Memorial Park and Stavemill Park in Madison.
The area boasts the fact it has two of the earliest built disc golf courses in the world. The Tom Monroe Course located at Brahan Spring Park in Huntsville is the seventh in the world while the 18hole layout on Redstone Arsenal was the ninth course on the planet.
If auto racing is your sport as a spectator or participant, the area is home to the round-track racing of Huntsville Speedway located in South Huntsville and the quarter-mile sprint of Rocket City Dragway near Harvest. Both facilities are family-friendly and are regarded as some of the best in the South.
Another round-track sport that is both physical and exciting is the Rocket City Roller Derby League part of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association.
Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in America and Madison is along for the fast ride the sport is currently experiencing. Courts are being added at a fast pace and there’s no shortage of courts in the Madison and Huntsville areas for the sport that is fun for all ages.
Table Tennis and bowling are also well represented in the area with several bowling centers including the Madison Bowling Center, and what most of us call “ping-pong” led by the North Alabama
Another option for sport is led by the Huntsville Track Club. Established in 1971, the HTC has over 500 members and host over 20 events annually, including two of the most decorated races in the South: The Cotton Row Run 10K and the Rocket City Marathon.

History is everywhere you look
BBefore and during the Civil War, Huntsville was a center for railroad and river-based trade and commerce. The Tennessee River remains a favorite local spot for summertime fun. Even now, we boast one of the nation’s oldest existing railroad depots where Civil War-era graffiti still marks the walls from the Confederate soldiers who were held captive there.
Antebellum Homes and Mills
Unlike many Southern communities during the Civil War, Huntsville’s buildings were mostly spared from destruction – leaving the Rocket City with one of the largest concentrations of antebellum homes in the South. The heart of this historic area is called Twickenham – a nod to the city’s original name given by wealthy landowner and capitalist, LeRoy Pope.
Over time, Huntsville was inhabited by wealthy cotton growers and land speculators in search of frontier property. The growing town turned toward textile manufacturing, establishing several mills that helped organize the town into distinct districts that still exist today as local landmarks of industry and creativity.
Landmarks
Look at the structures across town and you’ll see a beautiful collection of antebellum homes, renovated manufacturing mills, iconic Greek Revival-style buildings, a perfectly preserved down-home hardware store – the oldest in the state – and even a few spaceships! Where else can
you find that combination?
Space Exploration
In the middle of the 20th century, our bustling town became a critical support line for the U.S. Army before helping to launch the Space Race with the establishment of NASA and the Marshall Space Flight Center. Space exploration is celebrated across all of Huntsville – we are known as “Rocket City USA” after all – but it’s especially celebrated at Alabama’s most popular attraction, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center.
Research Park
Academia has thrived since the early days of Huntsville thanks to Alabama A&M University, Oakwood University and the University of Alabama in Huntsville’s continued development into premiere research facilities.
Expanding further into science, technology and other industries is Cummings Research Park, the second largest in the nation. Established in 1962, this impressive consortium of more than 300 companies adds a bustling population of engineers, doctors, students and creatives.
The history of Huntsville has seen numerous influxes of new faces from all over the world, which makes our history and identity an ever-changing tapestry. From humble beginnings, the “Rocket City” has grown into a futureminded place to live, work, play... and, of course, to visit!

BURRITT ON THE MOUNTAIN
This unique museum of regional history is located at the mountaintop home of Dr. William Henry Burritt. The remarkable 14room mansion built in the shape of an X in the 1930s is insulated with 2,200 bales of wheat straw. Learn the story of Dr. Burritt and his three wives, his penchant for goat’s milk, and how his vocation of homeopathic medicine led him to build one of the city’s most unique and eccentric homes.
The Historic Park consists of six authentic 19th century homes typical of life in the Cumberland Plateau, along with a blacksmith shop and assorted outbuildings. Interpreters in authentic period dress are on hand to answer questions, give tours, and demonstrate life as it was on a farm during the 1800s. At the heart of the Historic Park is The McCurdy Barnyard, home to a variety of authentic farm animals that educate young and old about the animals’ purpose on a farm.
The nature trails at Burritt are perfect for hiking to enjoy the wide variety of wildflowers in spring or the colorful mountain foliage in fall. Burritt’s trails circle around Round Top Mountain and connect to the Land Trust of Madison County and Monte Sano State Park. Special and regular events are scheduled throughout the year, from festivals to music concerts and everything in between, Burritt literally has something for everyone to enjoy.

Major 19th-century buildings in the historic park include the Balch House, originally built in 1887 near Harvest; the Chandler House, a dogtrot house from Lester in Limestone County; an 1884 church that originally stood in downtown Madison; the Meals House, an 1845 cabin from near Lester; the Smith-Williams House, an 1868 marriage of two 1840s structures originally from McKay Hollow at the foot of Monte Sano; and an 1890s barn from near Minor Hill, TN. The
museum also features two buildings that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places: the Burritt Mansion, and the Joel Eddins House, which was built in 1810 near Ardmore in Limestone County. The log home was moved to Burritt in 2007.
Non-historic structures include a welcome center, administrative building, a replica of a four-room Rosenwald school, and an events center designed to look like the demolished Hotel Monte Sano.
The Historic Park at Burritt interprets the past by showcasing aspects of farm life from the Tennessee Valley of the Cumberland Plateau. At various times, especially durig special events, living history interpreters, dressed in period clothing, recreate the diversity of farm life allowing you to become involved through lively conversation, demonstrations and hands-on activities. Stroll through the historic park and enjoy the sights and sounds of farm life and the barnyard. Listen carefully and you might even hear a fiddle or a banjo. WEEDEN HOUSE MUSEUM & GARDEN
Located at 300 Gates Avenue in Huntsville, the Weeden House Museum is open to the public. It was originally built around 1819 by Henry C. Bradford and is an example of Federal architecture. It was the home of John McKinley, Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, and Bartley M. Lowe. It was the birthplace and lifelong home of nationally famous artist and poet, Maria Howard Weeden (1846-1905). The two-story brick house features an outstanding leaded glass entrance fanlight, spiral staircase and hand-carved mantels. During the Civil War, it was requisitioned for the use of Federal officers.
After the Civil War, Miss Weeden partly supported her impoverished family by teaching art in the house. Maria Howard Weeden was born in the house on July 6, 1846. She was the youngest child in the Dr. William Weeden family. Athough she had little formal art training, she became well-known for her watercolor portraits of the former slaves, depicting their character in her paintings and their sense of humor and philosophy of life in accompanying poems written in their dialect. Her books were published by Doubleday, McClure and Company. Joel Chandler Harris, creator of “Uncle Remus,” referred to Miss Weeden as “the bright light of the nineteenth century.”

HARRISON BROS. HARDWARE
Alabama’s oldest continuously operating hardware store was established in 1879 and has been located on the Square since 1897. It is operated by the Historic Huntsville Foundation and staffed by volunteers. Better than a museum, Harrison Brothers is a living 19th century landmark sitting serenely in the midst of downtown Huntsville. High-tech Huntsville itself seems 100 years away as you enter the store.
Harrison Brothers is more than a glimpse of old Huntsville. It is a shopper’s delight. On the west side of the store, a stack of antique biscuit jars brimming with old-fashioned candies tempts youngsters of all ages. Cotton throws, colorful tins, marbles by the scoop, cast iron cookware, and oak rocking chairs share space with garden gadgets, bird feeders, and whirly-gigs.

HUNTSVILLE MADISON COUNTY VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK
This Memorial exists to honor those countless individuals who have answered the call of duty by serving in the Armed Forces that protect our country and our way of life. So many have proven their courage in battle, and so many have defended liberty and freedom at great sacrifice. This Memorial will hold before present and future generations the principle that freedom is not free and that a free people must always be prepared to defend that freedom at whatever cost.

Huntsville Madison County Veterans Memorial Park 200 Monroe Street NW, Huntsville
Madison Veteran’s Memorial Park - The Veterans Memorial Park is located on the southwest corner of the intersection of Church and Front Streets. The park was designed and constructed by Madison American Legion Post 229. The park is dedicated to Jesse Ollie Wikle, Jr., who was the first Madison man to lose his life in World War II, and to the members of the United States Military from the city of Madison who lost their lives during the wars of the 20th century.
Honoring Courage, Sacrifice, and Duty
TThe Huntsville Madison County Veterans Memorial, officially dedicated on Veterans Day, November 11, 2011, honors and pays tribute to all veterans for their “Courage”, “Sacrifice”, and call to “Duty”.
Sacred geometry was used to determine the placement of eight polished black granite markers engraved with the names of over 365 Madison County servicemen who made the supreme sacrifice for their country. The granite markers are arranged along a timeline to accurately illustrate the United States’ involvement in military conflicts around the world.
The Memorial fountain system begins with water cascading over the continuous weir, symbolizing the blood which has been spilled defending our nation’s freedom. The flow of water is punctuated by the granite markers and pours into the Sacrifice Pool, the Courage Pool, and the Defender Fountain. As a visitor stands at the granite marker, facing their own reflection, water falls over the weir on each side producing a gentle sound reminding them of the great sacrifice made for our freedom. The small white headstones in the Defender Fountain are replicas of those in Arlington National Cemetery and represent all of our fallen warriors. Water streams through the Defender Fountain into the pentagon shaped Freedom Fountain,
thus providing a contained circular flow. The impressive rise and fall of water from the Freedom Fountain reminds us that this is a living tribute to all veterans and gives the sense of life, liberty and freedom springing forth from a grateful community.

Anchoring the memorial at each end of the circular fountain are bronze statues depicting “Sacrifice” and “Courage”. The models for these statues are all Madison County combat veterans. Through the left portal leading to the POW/MIA flag is the Eternal Flame perpetually burning in remembrance of all those who died, were imprisoned, and remain missing in war. In the right portal leading to the Alabama flag is a Time Capsule, in which veterans have placed personal artifacts, letters, and items reminiscent of their service and the wars they fought. It will be disinterred on November 11, 2062.
The U.S. Flag, which represents “Duty”, reminds us all of the serviceman’s commitment to defend and serve under her. Continuing beyond the U.S. Flag is the Patriots Walkway. This Walkway features a series of seven kiosks, dedicated to educating young and old alike about our nation’s wars and the citizen soldiers that fought those wars, beginning with the Revolutionary War. The main intent of these informational panels is to help readers gain an appreciation for the high price that has been paid to achieve freedom and liberty throughout our nation’s history.
Along the Patriots Walkway is the Battlefield Memorial Walkway, featuring five plaques along the winding walkway that discuss the meaning of the Battlefield Memorial and serve as a reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by so many on battlefields around the globe.
As you travel the pathway and reflect on the meaning of this solemn place, you are taken to the highest point of the park, the entrance to the Battlefield Memorial, where you will find the final plaque, a poem in remembrance of the fallen warrior. Just beyond, you will find the Battlefield Memorial, a symbolic representation for the fallen soldier. This space offers a somber area to mourn and honor those that died serving in the Armed Forces of the United States. It is a place set aside to remember the fallen, pay tribute to their sacrifice and the sacrifice of their loved ones.
Continuing along the Patriots Walkway, you will find the Aviator Statue. This U.S. Armed Forces Aviator, sculpted by local artist Dan Burch and modeled after the likeness of Marine Captain James N. “Trey” Wilbourn III, Huntsville’s only casualty of the Persian Gulf War, pays tribute to all U.S. Armed Forces Aviators for their courage, duty and sacrifice in defense of our nation and way of life.
At the base of the Patriots Walkway you will find the Revolutionary War Monument. This 8 ft, 3 ton monument, dedicated to the 84 Revolutionary War soldiers who are buried in Madison County, was relocated to the Huntsville Veterans Memorial park in October 2016. Originally standing on the north side of the Madison County Courthouse Square, until the old courthouse was razed in the late 1960s, the Revolutionary War Monument had many homes and, to the delight of the Twickenham Town Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, has appropriately found its final resting place in the Huntsville Madison County Veterans Memorial.

HISTORIC LOWRY HOUSE
Huntsville’s historic districts feature several homes with roots predating the Civil War, but few are as unique as the Lowry House. The 3,000 sq ft house has connections to Huntsville’s earliest
settlers. Its namesake, John Taylor Lowry, was a landowner and slaveholder who became an abolitionist.
To say the Lowry House is a mesh of styles would be an understatement. When it was built in 1850, the home included wood beams from the two-bedroom cabin Lowry’s grandfather built in 1809. It’s important to note his grandfather, John Lowry, was the contractor on the county’s first courthouse, completed in 1818.
The large, Italianate-style home people see today is on the National Register of Historic Places. It was purchased by Louie and Jane Tippett in 1998, and underwent an extensive four-year restoration process, The Tippetts’ daughter, Cynthia Tippett Masucci, said visitors are impressed the home is considered a rarity due to its architectural style that includes Federal-Empire, French Colonial and Italianate-style fireplaces.
The Lowry House is also a popular haunt for paranormal investigators who believe otherworldly spirits live within its walls.
The Lowry House is open for tours, concerts and local artisan events. They also host weddings, corporate events and private parties.

THE PRINCESS THEATER
The Princess Theatre has been a North Alabama landmark for over a century. She began life as a livery stable in 1887. In 1919, the Princess opened her doors as a performing arts venue. Today, the Princess Theatre is one of the premier venues for performing arts in North Alabama.
After a facelift in 1941, the Princess emerged with the art deco style that remains today and features a brilliantly lit neon marquee that is an icon for the region. Local architect Albert Frahn decorated the auditorium burgundy and gray walls with murals that glow under blacklight. If you visit today, you can still see these features. Some find them stunning; others notice the slightly “creepy” quality. Either way, children who come to the venue remain particularly fascinated by them.
Today, the Princess continues to be a centerpiece in community performing arts. Not only is it iconic, but it is also versatile, acting as a classroom to students in summer theater camps, an intimate concert hall for artists, a playhouse for local theater companies, and even a rental space for private events. It has gained devoted fans from audiences and performers alike for the charming and effective setting.

PERFORMING ARTS
Huntsville may be largely an engineering town, but that doesn’t make us a shy bunch. Classic productions, current favorites and local originals are all on display on stages across the Rocket City. Broadway Theatre League brings award-winning favorites to the Von Braun Center, like Les Miserables in May 2025 (see ad on the back page). Theatre Huntsville and Independent Musical Productions cast accomplished local actors in meticulously designed and directed productions. Award-winning Fantasy Playhouse encourages and inspires children to join in on theatre arts. In addition to these organizations, Huntsville boasts several audacious troupes that perform original dramas and off-the-wall sketch comedy. Independent dance studios offer ballet and dance performances year round. Huntsville universities and schools have been praised for their professional-level stage shows. Simply put, the Rocket City has something on the marquee for whatever kind of theatre experience you’re looking for!

Broadway Theatre League was founded in 1959 by the Business & Professional Women’s Club of Huntsville and the shows were held at Huntsville High School! In the early days, touring theatre veterans Joan Bennett, Dorothy Lamour, John Carradine, and John Raitt came to Huntsville. In 1975, BTL moved the performances to the “new” Von Braun Center and brought bigger scale shows to town. The 1990’s brought about the now standard weekend performance schedule and the beginning of the mega-musical. BIG SPRING INTERNATIONAL PARK
Big Spring first drew settlers in North Alabama around its welcoming banks to found Huntsville in the late nineteenth century. Today, Big Spring, in its central location in the heart of downtown Huntsville, still draws locals and tourists to its waters for events, picnics, concerts, and more. The park has even caught the eye of tourists from around the world. Hence, the ‘international’ in the name. The park boasts a sundial from Germany, a bench from the United Kingdom, and gifts from Japan that include cherry trees and that famous red bridge. Big Spring Park plays host to numerous community events throughout the year, including the annual Tinsel Trail at Christmas time, but visitors will find it a pleasant place for quality time with loved ones while feeding fish and ducks and taking in the Huntsville skyline all year round.

OCUMMINGS RESEARCH PARK
One of the main reasons for Huntsville’s success, Cummings Research Park is the second largest research park in the country and the fourth largest in the world. Founded in 1962, it is one of the world’s leading science and technology business parks, with a mixture of Fortune 500 companies, local and international hightech enterprises, U.S. space and defense agencies, thriving business incubators and competitive higher-education institutions.
CRP is the home of over 300 companies, more than 26,000 employees and 13,500 students.
While the park has known decades of success, Executive Director Erin Koshut and area leaders are not about to let CRP grow stagnant. A comprehensive master plan set out in 2016 to keep the park vibrant, which has sparked a resurgence and revitalization in recent years, led by the Huntsville/Madison

Currently over 91 percent capacity, the highest CRP has seen in more than 13 years, leaders are working to make sure the park is not just a place to work, but live, with added walkability and social events.
“One of the things we know is for our companies across the community that are recruiting and retaining top talent, creating a sense of place is incredibly important,” Koshut said. “Inside the park we are creating that sense of place. We are building that community, that collaborative environment.”
In addition to enabling innovation and technological achievement for companies located within the Park, progress on the Master Plan has meant incorporating new and additional outdoor amenities to further connect the Park by adding way-finding signs, greenways, bicycle and pedestrian pathways, and pocket parks.
“As we look into the future, CRP is planning to bring mixeduse centers to the Park. These centers will include business and lifestyle services, cafes and restaurants, and limited housing to support the primary science and technology focus of businesses in Cummings Research Park,” Koshut said.
The Park is also supported by programming and services such as food truck fests, lightning-round tech talks, lecture series’, musical events, tech trolley tours, and more connected and collaborative activities.

MEDICAL
The tightly packed district, which also features a network of medical research and care organizations and numerous private practices and pharmacies, is strategically central to entertainment, dining and Huntsville’s main highway, Memorial Parkway. You’ll love the Medical District’s tight-knit sense of community, which makes it a great spot for visitors wanting to get a taste of local flavor, culture and activity.
MONTE SANO
When Dr. Wernher von Braun and his team of German rocket scientists came to Huntsville to work with the U.S. Army and then help NASA land a man on the moon, there was one area of town that appealed to their families most: the lush, natural beauty of Monte Sano Mountain. Today, Monte Sano is still a vast, secluded area where you can stretch your legs and enjoy the fresh air.
LOWE MILL
In its early days, Huntsville was sectioned into districts that were based on the various textile facilities – such as Dallas Mill, Lowe Mill, Lincoln Mill and others – that drove the local economy. It’s noteworthy that in a special way, this tradition continues today! The Lowe Mill area is one of the most exciting and rapidly developing neighborhoods in Huntsville and an essential destination for visitors and residents alike!
HAMPTON COVE
Once a quiet, rural collection of back roads, Hampton Cove has spent the last twenty years rapidly developing into one of the largest suburbs in the Huntsville metropolitan area. Soak in the epic view of the Tennessee Valley during a drive over the Cumberland Plateau, and you’ll find a picturesque community that values peace, quiet and fun.
JONES VALLEY
Head south from Downtown Huntsville, take a left to climb the hill that intersects Whitesburg Drive and Airport Road and you’ll be stunned at what you see: the beautiful, rolling hills of Jones Valley. A sweeping landscape dotted with grazing cows will greet you, along with beautiful homes built into the hillside and the majesty of the Cumberland Plateau on the horizon.
LINCOLN MILL
Lincoln Mill might be Huntsville’s most unique and surprising neighborhood. At one time it was the largest cotton mill in the city. At
another, Lincoln Mill housed office space for NASA. It was also where engineers designed the Apollo Lunar Rover! Since then, Lincoln Mill and its surrounding area has developed into a re-emerging area for outside-the-box thinkers in the world of business, benevolence and education.
MERRIMACK
Huntsville’s Merrimack District has a different feel than the other urban areas in Rocket City, thanks to its open spaces and New Englandinspired homes. In the early 1900s, Merrimack Manufacturing Company developed a village to surround its booming cotton mill in Huntsville and designed it to mirror villages in Massachusetts. Big, welcoming porches and duplex-style homes characterize a community that This Old House has highlighted as a notable “old-house neighborhood.”
MADISON
Madison is one of the fastest growing cities in the southeastern United States, with one of the highest per capita incomes and a school system that is recognized for scholastic excellence at the local, state, and national level Madison has been listed as a US News & World Report “Top 10 Places to Grow Up”, a CNN Money “Top 100 Best Places to Live”, one of Family Circle’s “10 Best Towns for Family”, and was recognized as Google’s “2013 Digital Capital of Alabama”.
VILLAGE OF PROVIDENCE
Boasting “big city life and small town living,” the Village of Providence is a quaint and charming, idyllic area right off Highway 72 in northwest Huntsville. The meticulously designed community has been nationally recognized for its commitment to creating a peopleand pedestrian-oriented place for residents to enjoy. Of course, the Village of Providence welcomes visitors as well, which is clear from the neighborhood’s dining, shopping and lodging options.
SOUTH HUNTSVILLE
South Huntsville is where the energy of the city meets the tranquility of nature. Explore the outdoors, uncover unique places, and share in the spirit of innovation that characterizes South Huntsville. Take a bike ride down Aldridge Creek Greenway, hike on Green Mountain, row along the river at Ditto Landing, or run through a neighborhood.

Matt Curtis Real Estate named the No. 1 real estate team in Alabama
YYou’ve probably heard of Matt Curtis Real Estate. Maybe you’ve seen one of their billboards or maybe one of their agents even sold you your house. After all, they have sold over 7,000 homes in the Huntsville are and have been named the No. 1 real estate team in Alabama for four years in a row.
But did you know that Matt Curtis wasn’t always in real estate? He was a sales engineer working for National Instruments when he moved to Huntsville and became involved in real estate just on the side.
“I started investing in real estate and couldn’t find an agent I felt comfortable with. I had an engineering degree. So, typical engineer, I decided to go and get my own license and represent myself and kind of one thing led to the next,” recalled Curtis.
He already had interested clients from his previous sales experience and partnered with a local builder whom Curtis had worked with in building his own home. At the start, Curtis was doing the work of multiple jobs to run his new real estate business. In addition to being a real estate agent, he was the bookkeeper, janitor, and many other roles for his business.
“That’s how we started and then kind of one by one we started growing our team to where we are today with over 50 team members,” Curtis said.
Curtis’ team stands out in the real estate business for their commitment to five star service. That commitment means going above and beyond for their clients and community.
They maintain relationships with clients long after sales have closed, keep their clients informed about the state of the local real estate market, and treat them like family with special gifts and events. Their focus on teamwork has allowed them to consistently provide quality service and has contributed to the success they’ve achieved in the last sixteen years including hitting their 7,000 houses sold mark last year, being repeatedly recognized as the top real estate team in the state, and acquiring more than 3,000 five-star reviews from past clients.
“I thank God for giving us the opportunity and blessing us. I’m just really thankful for our team and our clients and our community because without somebody to serve and without the amazing teammates we have, I would have never been able to sell 7,000 homes by myself. So, it’s definitely been a team effort,” remarked Curtis. “A lot of real estate companies put too much on a single agent where they try to do everything themselves. So, we believe with a team, 1+1=3. That’s one of the ways our agents are able to be so successful is they have so much support here and then that also provides much better service to our clients as well.”
The Matt Curtis team doesn’t keep their success to themselves. They not only go above and beyond for their clients but for the community too.
Through Curtis’ support, Kids to Love, a local foster and adoption agency, was able to build the Curtis Cares Center, which includes a storage facility for Kids to Love’s Christmas for the Kid, More than a Backpack, and Emergency Assistance programs along with classroom space for KTECH’s workforce training programs, and last year, Curtis contributed to paying the salaries of the social workers, allowing for the placement of 56 children.
“We have a heart for not only housing but we also have a heart for
kids and we believe in the mission of Lee Marshall and Kids to Love and so, that was a perfect partnership for us to help them out,” commented Curtis. “We believe not only everybody deserve five star service in getting a home, deserves a home, but every kid deserves a loving home to be raised in.”
The Matt Curtis team are also regular supporters of House of Harvest food bank through donations and volunteer work.
Another of the Matt Curtis Teams’ big projects is their home building program in Nicaragua.
Curtis said he was inspired to start the program after visiting Nicaragua on a building trip.
“By being there and seeing the kids, seeing the need, seeing the people, I decided that we were going to start building a home for every hundred homes that we sell from our company and just kind of coming back and sharing the vision with my family it ended up turning into a vision of building a thousand homes for families in Nicaragua,” explained Curtis.
The project has already built 141 homes though it has recently been forced to pause due to the recent political instability in the country.
Here at home, Curtis is seeing the housing market in Huntsville evolve. He’s seeing the effect of Huntsville’s national accolades that are enticing more people move to the area by choice rather than for work relocation. As more and more people move into the area, supply on the housing market is struggling to keep up with the demand and prices are on the rise.
“We still don’t quite have enough supply. We have more sellers starting to become available on the market, which is good for first time homebuyers. One of the big challenges has been affordability. With higher prices, with inflation and higher interest rates, we’re not quite as affordable of a city as we used to be but we’re still much more affordable than our surrounding peers,” Curtis said.
He says these circumstances mean his team is working extra hard for their clients and staying focused on providing five-star service.

Recently cited as one of the 12 largest commercial real estate projects in the nation, MidCity District is a nationally acclaimed mixed-use district located in the heart of the Tennessee Valley’s high-tech employment center and at the epicenter of the 13-county regional trade area with more than a 1.1 million population.
MidCity is a culture-forward district focused on constructing a well-rounded community with bountiful entertainment, recreation, and art. Built on land formerly occupied by a regional mall, MidCity District was planned through careful research into how people congregate, what communities look for in a place, and how venues, buildings, parks and public spaces can be used in varied ways. Fitness and recreation, public gathering areas, walkable streets, inspired architecture, vibrant neighborhoods and intimate spaces form MidCity.
The district already boasts the Orion amphitheater, a stateof-the-art entertainment venue with national and international

LINCOLN MILL
Lincoln Mill opened in 1900 under the name Madison Spinning Company. Its development took place in phases and it quickly grew to become the largest of the textile mills in Huntsville. In the 1980s a fire ripped through the campus and destroyed the oldest buildings on site. The structures that survived—Mill No. 3 and the Dye House—were built in 1924 and are still standing today. Lincoln Mill underwent its biggest transformation in 2020 and 2021. The site’s restoration introduced several new amenities that enhance its beauty and showcase the many distinctive spaces within its walls. The Dye House—one of the remaining structures that survived the fire—houses the development’s retail, fitness, and dining concepts that benefit the campus and its tenants. Tenants include Iron Tribe Fitness, THREE15 Studio, Turbo Coffee Roasters, High Point Climbing and Fitness, Fusion Barbecue, and Heritage Kitchen + Bath.

DOWNTOWN MADISON
Tucked away at the heart of the City of Madison is historic downtown Madison. Once called Madison Station for the 1850s era Memphis and Charleston railway depot built there, the old town, residences, and railway tracks are still in use and thriving. Today, downtown Madison is a slice of Southern Americana with delicious food and unique shopping.
In one of the more unusual Christmas events, rubber chickens with gift certificates are tossed from the roof of a Madison downtown building. As odd as it might sound, the tradition pays homage to a real event that occurred during the great depression years to help local families — except back then it was performed using real chickens.
