OPERA

HAS MANY KINDS OF

STORIES

2013/14 Season

In opera, as in life, there are many stories, and no one way of looking at the world. Madison Opera’s 2013/14 season tells three stories, each in a different language and style. Tosca is a traditional classic. Puccini’s taut masterpiece thrills both musically and dramatically, interweaving intense passion and murderous jealousy with soaring music. The Daughter of the Regiment is entertainment, pure and simple. Donizetti’s sweet boy-meets-girl, boy-gets-girl story, laced with comedy and vocal pyrotechnics, will delight audiences of all ages. Dead Man Walking is one of the greatest operas ever written. Its shattering story begins with a violent crime and ends in silence, leaving no one who encounters it unchanged. This soul-stirring season marks John DeMain’s 20th anniversary with Madison Opera, and the diversity of styles are a reflection of his own storied and stunning career. Join us for a season that shows exactly why the musical and dramatic power of opera cannot be equaled.

With those words, opera singer Floria Tosca stabs Scarpia, the evil police chief who has tortured her lover, the painter Cavaradossi, and now threatens her. One of the most tightly written and fast-paced of operas, Puccini’s Tosca is a tour de force that combines soaring music, true love, and political intrigue into three acts of headlong drama. Don’t miss this production of one of the most justifiably popular operas ever written. Melody Moore (Countess Almaviva in The Marriage of Figaro) returns in the role in which she recently triumphed at San Francisco Opera. Scott Piper (last here for Opera in the Park 2004 ) sings the heroic Cavaradossi and Nmon Ford sings Scarpia, one of the most satisfyingly villainous of baritone roles. Tosca Melody Moore

Marie loves Tonio. Tonio loves Marie. Marie’s adoptive parents, the entire 21st Regiment, are a bit less happy about matters, and when her new-found aunt takes her away from both the regiment and Tonio, Marie despairs. Fortunately, because this is a comedy, all ends happily ever after. Donizetti’s sparkling melodies, laced with thrilling high notes, are sure to enchant, while the sweet love story makes this an opera for all ages. Madison Opera returns to the beautiful Capitol Theater for this enchanting comedy, starring Caitlin Cisler (Oscar in A Masked Ball) as Marie; Javier Abreu as the high-C-prone Tonio; celebrated Metropolitan Opera baritone Kim Josephson as Sergeant Sulpice, and local favorite Allisanne Apple as the Marquise of Berkenfield. Since its premiere in 2000, Dead Man Walking has become a modern classic, one of the most important, powerful operas ever written. Based on Sister Helen Prejean’s book and the movie of the same name, it tells of a nun’s journey as the spiritual advisor of a convicted murderer on Louisiana’s death row. From its shocking beginning to its emotionally searing final scene, this opera changes everyone who encounters it. Its stunning score and intense story combine into a work that “must be reckoned something of a masterpiece – a gripping, enormously skillful marriage of words and music to tell a story of love, suffering and spiritual redemption” (San Francisco Chronicle). Daniela Mack (Cinderella) returns as Sister Helen Prejean, whose faith is tested by her meetings with DeRocher. Michael Mayes, who composer Heggie calls the definitive DeRocher, sings the convicted murderer, simultaneously defiant and terrified. Internationally-acclaimed mezzo Susanne Mentzer makes her Madison Opera debut as his mother, whose heartbreak is as real as that of the parents of the teenagers her son murdered.
